Theoretically, dispersers should target the habitat where prospects for fitness will be highest. Aiming for a habitat similar to the natal area (natal habitat-biased dispersal) has been hypothesized as a probable rule of thumb for dispersers, but has received very little empirical support to date. We investigated similarities between natal and post-dispersal settlement sites with radio-collared Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans L.). Juveniles born in small patches and raised in nests close to patch edge settled in small patches and used nests close to edges after dispersal. In addition, post-dispersal use of dreys (versus cavities) was similar to that observed in natal sites. However, the quality of settlement habitat was unrelated to the quality of the natal site, which suggests that natal experience on average-quality habitats may not lead to ecological traps for flying squirrels. This study provides evidence that habitat selection at the landscape scale is influenced by habitat of natal area.  相似文献

Young flying squirrels (Pteromys volans) dispersing in fragmented forests   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Dispersal is a key determinant of the population dynamics ofspecies. Thus, a better understanding of how dispersal is affectedby the landscape structure and how animals make decisions aboutmoving across different landscapes is needed. We studied thedispersal of 60 radio-collared juvenile Siberian flying squirrels(Pteromys volans) in southern Finland. The effect of landscapestructure on selected dispersal direction, dispersal distance, and straightness of dispersal path was studied. Flying squirrelswere capable of dispersing over long distances in fragmentedforest landscapes. The patches used as temporary roosting sitesduring dispersal were of a lower quality than were those usedas finally occupied patches. The patches used were larger thanwere patches on average in the study areas. There was a veryclear directional bias in the dispersal path (i.e., it was nearlya straight line), which remained over a large scale, but wide-openareas obstructed the straightness of the path. As the distancesbetween crossed patches increased, short-distance disperserswere found further away from their natal home range. However, there were no differences in the landscape that could explainthe differences between individuals in decisions to remain philopatricor to become short- or long-distance dispersers. In addition, whereas short-distance dispersers dispersed in random directions,long-distance dispersers started to disperse in directions dominatedby preferred habitat. Thus, there were behavioral differencesbetween dispersers. Our results supported the hypotheses statingthat individuals decide to disperse long or short distancesbefore the onset of dispersal.  相似文献

Seasonal cold temperatures require mammals to use morphological, behavioural, or physiological traits to survive periods of extreme cold and food shortage. Torpor is a physiological state that minimizes energy requirements by decreasing resting metabolic rate (MR) and body temperature (Tb). Many rodent species are capable of torpor, however, evidence in northern and southern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus and Glaucomys volans, respectively) has remained anecdotal. We experimentally attempted to induce torpor in wild-caught flying squirrels by lowering ambient temperature (Ta) and measuring MR using open-flow respirometry. We also studied seasonal differences in MR and Tb at various Ta. Both MR and Tb provided evidence for torpor in flying squirrels, but only infrequent, shallow torpor. MR decreased infrequently and any decreases were rarely sustained for longer than one hour. We found a significant positive relationship between Ta and Tb only in G. volans, which suggests that G. volans is more susceptible to low Ta compared with G. sabrinus, possibly due to their small body size. We observed no substantive seasonal or interspecific differences in the relation between MR and Ta, with the exception that northern flying squirrels expended more energy at cold Ta during warm season trials than other species-season combinations. The infrequency of torpor use in our experiments suggests that other energy-saving strategies, such as social thermoregulation, may limit the reliance on torpor in this lineage.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar young-of-the-year (0+) and 1 year old parr (1+) from the 2006 spawning cohort in a 5125 m reach of the River Skauga in central Norway was documented. A high degree of similarity was found between the distribution of 0+ and 1+ parr based on catches at 205 transects sampled in both years. Cross-correlations and partial cross-correlations (correcting for habitat variables) confirmed significant positive association between the two distributions on a small spatial scale (within 100 m) and a clear pattern of decreasing correlation with distance.  相似文献

Maternal effects can have lasting fitness consequences for offspring, but these effects are often difficult to disentangle from associated responses in offspring traits. We studied persistent maternal effects on offspring survival in North American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) by manipulating maternal nutrition without altering the post-emergent nutritional environment experienced by offspring. This was accomplished by providing supplemental food to reproductive females over winter and during reproduction, but removing the supplemental food from the system prior to juvenile emergence. We then monitored juvenile dispersal, settlement and survival from birth to 1 year of age. Juveniles from supplemented mothers experienced persistent and magnifying survival advantages over juveniles from control mothers long after supplemental food was removed. These maternal effects on survival persisted, despite no observable effect on traits normally associated with high offspring quality, such as body size, dispersal distance or territory quality. However, supplemented mothers did provide their juveniles an early start by breeding an average of 18 days earlier than control mothers, which may explain the persistent survival advantages their juveniles experienced.  相似文献

Most classical models for the movement of organisms assume that all individuals have the same patterns and rates of movement (for example, diffusion with a fixed diffusion coefficient) but there is empirical evidence that movement rates and patterns may vary among different individuals. A simple way to capture variation in dispersal that has been suggested in the ecological literature is to allow individuals to switch between two distinct dispersal modes. We study models for populations whose members can switch between two different nonzero rates of diffusion and whose local population dynamics are subject to density dependence of logistic type. The resulting models are reaction–diffusion systems that can be cooperative at some population densities and competitive at others. We assume that the focal population inhabits a bounded region and study how its overall dynamics depend on the parameters describing switching rates and local population dynamics. (Traveling waves and spread rates have been studied for similar models in the context of biological invasions.) The analytic methods include ideas and results from reaction–diffusion theory, semi-dynamical systems, and bifurcation/continuation theory.  相似文献

There was a strong correlation between the relative standard metabolic rate (rSMR) values of individual Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. measured 5 and 22 weeks after first feeding in June and October respectively (Pearson's r =0·68, 26 d.f., P <0·001). However, this is a conservative estimate of repeatability as two separate regressions were used to calculate SMR in October due to the separation of the population into an upper modal group made up of early migrants and a lower modal group comprised of delayed migrants. SMR values in June and October were similar (paired t test, t =-0·85, 27 d.f., P >0·05) when expressed as the percentage deviation from those predicted for a fish of that size based on the body mass/SMR relations in June or October indicating that relative standard metabolic rates were stable over time when food was not limiting. rSMR status was maintained in 19 of the 28 fish (i.e. 68%) between the two measures. rSMR status was correlated with life history strategy: salmon fry with a high SMR in June were more likely to become smolts during the autumn than those with a low SMR.  相似文献

Linking dispersal to population growth remains a challenging task and is a major knowledge gap, for example, for conservation management. We studied relative roles of different demographic rates behind population growth in Siberian flying squirrels in two nest‐box breeding populations in western Finland. Adults and offspring were captured and individually identifiable. We constructed an integrated population model, which estimated all relevant annual demographic rates (birth, local [apparent] survival, and immigration) as well as population growth rates. One population (studied 2002–2014) fluctuated around a steady‐state equilibrium, whereas the other (studied 1995–2014) showed a numerical decline. Immigration was the demographic rate which showed clear correlations to annual population growth rates in both populations. Population growth rate was density dependent in both populations. None of the demographic rates nor the population growth rate correlated across the two study populations, despite their proximity suggesting that factors regulating the dynamics are determined locally. We conclude that flying squirrels may persist in a network of uncoupled subpopulations, where movement between subpopulations is of critical importance. Our study supports the view that dispersal has the key role in population survival of a small forest rodent.  相似文献

Many plants rely on animals for seed dispersal, but are all individuals equally effective at dispersing seeds? If not, then the loss of certain individual dispersers from populations could have cascade effects on ecosystems. Despite the importance of seed dispersal for forest ecosystems, variation among individual dispersers and whether land‐use change interferes with this process remains untested. Through a large‐scale field experiment conducted on small mammal seed dispersers, we show that an individual's personality affects its choice of seeds, as well as how distant and where seeds are cached. We also show that anthropogenic habitat modifications shift the distribution of personalities within a population, by increasing the proportion of bold, active, and anxious individuals and in‐turn affecting the potential survival and dispersal of seeds. We demonstrate that preserving diverse personality types within a population is critical for maintaining the key ecosystem function of seed dispersal.  相似文献

Dispersal behaviour plays a key role in social organisation, demography and population genetics. We describe dispersal behaviour in a population of African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) in Kenya. Almost all individuals, of both sexes, left their natal packs, with 45 of 46 reproductively active “alpha” individuals acquiring their status through dispersal. Dispersal age, group size and distance did not differ between males and females. However, only females embarked on secondary dispersal, probably reflecting stronger reproductive competition among females than males. When dispersing, GPS-collared wild dogs travelled further than when resident, both in daylight and by night, following routes an order of magnitude longer than the straight-line distance covered. Dispersers experienced a daily mortality risk three times that experienced by adults in resident packs. The detailed movement data provided by GPS-collars helped to reconcile differences between dispersal patterns reported previously from other wild dog populations. However, the dispersal patterns observed at this and other sites contrast with those assumed in published demographic models for this endangered species. Given the central role of dispersal in demography, models of wild dog population dynamics need to be updated to account for improved understanding of dispersal processes.  相似文献

Summary Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) were examined for ability to select a diet that maximizes daily energy intake (optimal diet) under free-living field conditions. The optimal diet for each squirrel was determined given constraints (e.g. body size, feeding time) on individual foraging behavior. Most squirrels (63%) consumed a diet not significantly different from one that would maximize their daily energy intake. The remainder (37%) approached an energy maximized diet but appeared to make some incorrect foraging decisions. Both males and females appeared to approach energy maximized diets. An individual's deviation from its optimal diet is relatively constant within a season and not significantly affected by immediate environmental influences such as food abundance, thermal conditions and social environment. The energy cost of deviating from an optimal diet may be large enough to affect fitness. These results suggest that the ability to select an optimal diet can be viewed as a behavioral trait that might be subject to natural selection.  相似文献

Southern flying squirrels (Glaucomys volans) can have significant negative impacts on red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) reproductive success and group size. Although direct control of southern flying squirrels may be necessary in small red-cockaded woodpecker populations (<30 groups), creation of high quality habitat through landscape management is the preferred method for managing larger woodpecker populations. Thus, we determined the habitat and landscape factors within 100 m, 400 m, and 800 m of cluster centers that were related to southern flying squirrel use of red-cockaded woodpecker cavities at the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, South Carolina. At all spatial scales, the number of cavities in the cluster was the most influential variable determining use by southern flying squirrels. At the 400-m and 800-m scales, the amount of stream length was also positively associated with the presence of flying squirrels. The proximity and amount of hardwoods surrounding clusters were not related to southern flying squirrel use at any spatial scale; thus, removal or conversion of hardwood stands surrounding red-cockaded woodpeckers may not be necessary for reducing cavity kleptoparasitism by flying squirrels. However, when establishing recruitment clusters, areas with streams should be avoided and addition of artificial cavities to existing clusters should be done judiciously to minimize the number of excess cavities. The tail of pigs has been suggested as a welfare indicator as it can provide insight into a pig’s behavioural and emotional states. Tail posture and motion have so far mainly been studied in the context of tail biting behaviour. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between pigs’ natural behaviour and their tail posture and tail motion. This was studied in a free-range farm in which tail biting is absent. In total 214 pigs of different age categories were observed individually (sows, gilts, boars, and 6-month old pigs) or by group (6-month and 1-year old pigs) for their tail posture, tail motion and behaviour, using live observations and videos obtained by drone. Results showed that a fully curled tail occurred most during locomotion (P < 0.001); and an actively hanging tail occurred more during foraging (P < 0.001), excavation (P = 0.006), feeding (P = 0.017), receipt of agonistic behaviour (P = 0.036), and non-agonistic social interactions (P = 0.046). A fully curled tail (P < 0.001) and a half curled tail (P < 0.005) occurred least in the group of sows. Tail motion was infrequent (6.7% of observations), and involved mainly loosely wagging, which occurred more during locomotion (P = 0.006) and non-agonistic social interactions (P = 0.006). A higher temperature-humidity index increased the probability of half curled tails (P < 0.001) and loose wagging (P < 0.001), while reducing the probability of active (P < 0.001) and passive hanging tails (P = 0.013). These results provide insight into tail posture and tail motion in pigs under semi-natural conditions, showing especially that hanging tails are not primarily associated with tail biting, and that the use of tail postures for welfare assessment should be in consideration with the context in which the animals are kept.  相似文献

This study tested the behavioural effects of tagging subyearling and yearling lingcod Ophiodon elongatus with acoustic telemetry tags in laboratory tanks and in the natural environment (Puget Sound, WA). In the laboratory, tagged individuals showed less movement and feeding behaviour soon after tagging than untagged controls. The effect dissipated after c. 1 week, presumably as the tagged O. elongatus recovered from surgery or adjusted to the presence of the tags. This dissipation enabled a field study that compared early‐tagged individuals with a long recovery period after tagging to recently‐tagged individuals with a short recovery period after tagging. Consistent with findings from the laboratory experiment, recently tagged individuals showed less movement away from three release sites in Puget Sound than early‐tagged individuals. Together, the laboratory and field results provide evidence of temporary tag effects on actual movement in the natural environment and provide a method for testing tag effects in the field. This study suggests that subyearling and yearling O. elongatus should be held for a recovery period before release. If holding after tagging is not an option, then movement data collected during the first week should be interpreted cautiously.  相似文献

Social foragers can use either a ‘producer’ strategy, which involves searching for food, or a ‘scrounger’ strategy, which involves joining others'' food discoveries. While producers rely on personal information and past experience, we may ask whether the tendency to forage as a producer is related to being a better learner. To answer this question, we hand-raised house sparrow (Passer domesticus) nestlings that upon independence were given an individual-learning task that required them to associate colour signal and food presence. Following the testing phase, all fledglings were released into a shared aviary, and their social-foraging tendencies were measured. We found a significant positive correlation between individual''s performance in the individual-learning task and subsequent tendency to use searching (producing) behaviour. Individual-learning score was negatively correlated with initial fear of the test apparatus and with body weight. However, the correlation between individual learning and searching remained significant after controlling for these variables. Since it was measured before the birds entered a social group, individual-learning ability could not be the outcome of being a producer. However, the two traits may be initially associated, or individual learning could facilitate producing behaviour. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence that associates individual-learning abilities with social-foraging strategies in animal groups.  相似文献

Carabid beetles are common predators of pest insects and weed seeds in agricultural systems. Understanding their dispersal across farmland is important for designing farms and landscapes that support pest and weed biological control. Little is known, however, about the effect of farmland habitat discontinuities on dispersal behaviour and the resulting redistribution of these beetles. We released 1,985 well‐fed and 1,680 food‐deprived individuals of the predatory carabid beetle Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger) (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on a farm in Wageningen, The Netherlands. We recaptured 23.6% of those beetles over a period of 23 days in 2010. The farmland comprised agricultural fields with various crop species and tillage, separated by strips of perennial vegetation. We developed discrete Fokker‐Planck diffusion models to describe dispersal based on motility (m2 day?1) and preferential behaviour at habitat interfaces. We used model selection and Akaike’s information criterion to determine whether movement patterns were driven by variation in motility between habitats, preferential behaviour at habitat interfaces, or both. Model selection revealed differences in motility among habitats and gave strong support for preferential behaviour at habitat interfaces. Behaviour at interfaces between crop and perennial vegetation was asymmetric, with beetles preferentially moving towards the crop. Furthermore, beetles had lower motility in perennial strips than in arable fields. Also between arable habitats movement was asymmetric, with beetles preferentially moving towards the habitat in which motility was lowest. Neither crop type nor tillage explained differences in motility between crop habitats. Recapture data representing dispersal patterns of beetles were best described by a model that accounted for differences in motility between farmland habitats and preferential behaviour at habitat interfaces. Motility in farmland and behaviour at interfaces can also be estimated for other organisms and farmland habitats to support design of farmland conducive to natural pest suppression. Landscape design for early recruitment of carabids into arable fields should take into account the quantity and quality of resource habitats in the landscape, their proximity to crop fields, movement rates, and the possibility of movement responses at interfaces between landscape elements.  相似文献

1. A growth model, originally developed for brown trout (Salmo trutta), has now been fitted to data for Atlantic salmon (S. salar) and stone‐loach (Barbatula barbatula) from English populations, and Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) from Sweden. The model relates growth rate to temperature for a fish of standard size and the functional relationship has a triangular shape with a sharp peak at the optimal temperature for growth and zero growth at the base of the triangle. It was unsuitable for growth data for Norwegian salmon, and a curvilinear Ratkowsky model provided a better fit, though the experimental protocol was different in the Norwegian and English experiments. 2. The Norwegian salmon were kept in groups in each tank, had to compete for food, and had to be divided into slow, moderate and fast growers before the Ratkowsky model could be fitted. Each English salmon was kept in its own tank and fed individually. For replicate experiments, fish of similar size were selected. Variation among fish kept under similar conditions was therefore small, and the triangular model was essentially for individual fish, not groups of fish. 3. The present simulation study tests the hypothesis that individual differences in the growth response could account for the curvilinear growth‐temperature relationship for the Norwegian salmon. The triangular model was used to generate the growth response to temperature for a group of salmon, each fish having a slightly different temperature preference and growth rate. The result was a curvilinear response, well approximated by the Ratkowsky model (adjusted R2 = 0.96). When the variability in individual temperature preference was increased, the Ratkowsky model was an even better fit (adjusted R2 = 0.98). Therefore, the apparent discrepancy between the two models was reconciled by allowing for individual differences in temperature preference and growth rate within groups of fish.  相似文献
