We describe changes in abundance of two rodent species over a 12-year period and assess the relationship between population abundance, climate, and agricultural practices in southern Córdoba Province, Argentina. We estimated abundance from trapping edges of agricultural areas, railway rights of way, and roadsides. Variables considered were: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), surface temperature, minimum and maximum temperature, rainfall, and cultivated areas of different crops. Species abundances varied over time; those of Akodon dolores declined, whereas those of A. azarae increased. Climatic and environmental changes may have had differential influences on species abundances. Autumn abundance of A. dolores was positively related to spring rainfall and area of harvested sorghum, and negatively related to NDVI. Akodon azarae abundance was negatively correlated with winter minimum temperature, spring rainfall, and sorghum harvested area, but positively associated with NDVI. On the other hand, both species were negatively correlated with each other. We suggest that environmental conditions may have changed the competition outcome for Akodon spp., and thus, had direct, differential effect on species abundances. 相似文献

A factorial experiment tested the effects of varying concentrations of the flavonol rutin and daytime temperatures of 20 and 30°C on growth, molting and food utilization efficiencies of third instar tobacco hornworms (Manduca sexta (L.)). Cool temperature prolonged both the growth (=feeding) and non-feeding periods and consequently the relative consumption rates (RCR) and relative growth rates (RGR). Temperature had no impact on the amount of food consumed and the utilization indices of efficiency of conversion of ingested food and efficiency of conversion of digested food to larval biomass. But rutin was more concentrated in the frass of the larvae at the warm temperature. With increasing levels of rutin in the diet, the efficiency of conversion of ingested food tended to decline. Rutin reduced RCR and RGR. At the cool temperature, rutin increased the time spent in the first portion of the non-feeding period disproportionately. Analysis of growth rate intervals within the growth period indicated that at the cool temperature rutin had no discernible impact over the first half of the growth period, during which developmental competence to molt is likely achieved. Overall, these results indicate an overlap in the growth and molting phases and suggest that rutin interferes with physiological processes at the time of molt initiation, with these effects magnified at a cool temperature. 相似文献

Population densities of the three grasshopper species on Miscanthus sinensis grassland in the Kawatabi IBP Area, Japan, Parapleurus alliaceus, Mongolotettix japonicus and Chorthippus latipennis, were estimated principally by the release-and-recapture method for five years from 1968 to 1972. The total number of individuals of all three grasshopper species was about 42 per 100m2 in August. The number of individuals of P. alliaceus adult, the dominant species on this grassland, showed a tendency to decline during the five years, though the amplitude was not so large. The number of eggs laid was, however, nearly constant and the mortality from the second nymphal instar to adult was relatively low and constant during the survey period. The weather conditions during the periods of egg and the first instar, such as snowfall and temperature decreasing, are suggested to be one of the factors causing variation in numbers. 相似文献

A microsporidium Nosema sp. was isolated from the grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus (Thunberg) collected in Spain. Infected individuals were found throughout most of the season when nymphs and adults of C. brunneus were present (March-June). Other acridoids collected in the same area were not found to be infected, indicating that this microsporidium is probably host specific. Attempts to artificially infect Dociostarus maroccanus (Thunberg) nymphs failed. 相似文献

Lonicera caeruleabrix is a perennial shrub native to North America, Europe and Asia. It produces dark blue berries known as honeyberries or haskap berries which are produced commercially in several territories including Canada, Japan, Russia and Poland. Plants are suited to UK environments, but it is yet to be widely commercially developed in the UK. In the present work, quality and nutritional traits of six honeyberry cultivars grown in Scotland were compared with other commonly grown berry fruits (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, blackcurrant) to aid the identification of environmentally stable, high-quality honeyberry cultivars suitable for UK cultivation. Differences were observed in fruit quality variables (soluble solids, titratable acidity and Brix/acid ratios) between honeyberry cultivars. Three of six cultivars examined exhibited notable variation in soluble solids dependent on harvest year with ‘Aurora’ and ‘Strawberry Sensation’ having consistently high oBrix values. Titratable acidity exhibited cultivar differences and there was limited variation over harvest years. ‘Aurora’ exhibited consistently high oBrix/titratable acidity ratio reflected by high glucose and fructose content. Honeyberry fruit had good nutritional profile relative to other soft fruits with higher polyphenol and anthocyanin content than strawberry, blueberry, blackberry and raspberry, manifested in greater antioxidant capacity. The major anthocyanins in aqueous honeyberry fruit extracts were cyanidin, pelargonidin and peonidin glycosides. These findings indicate that L. caerulea represents a crop suitable for UK cultivation capable of producing high quality fruit with a valuable nutritional profile relative to other soft fruits. Cultivars exhibit significant differences in fruit quality and nutritional profile as well as harvest consistency and growers should consider this when establishing new plantations. 相似文献

为探讨c-kit蛋白在蝗虫卵子发生过程中的表达和调控机制,应用免疫组织化学和统计分析等方法对网翅蝗科(直翅目,蝗总科)3种蝗虫卵子发生过程中8个代表性阶段c-kit蛋白表达进行观测和比较,3种蝗虫分别为:绿牧草蝗 Omocestus viridulus(Linnaeus),素色异爪蝗Euchorthippus unicolor(Ikonn.)和条纹异爪蝗Euchorthippus vittatus Zheng.结果显示蝗虫卵子发生第1~6阶段卵母细胞中有不同程度c-kit蛋白特异性表达,但随着卵黄发生的开始逐渐消失,而且3种蝗虫卵子发生过程中c-kit蛋白表达存在种间差异.以上结果提示c-kit蛋白在卵子发生中的表达暗示它参与和调控卵母细胞增殖与分化,此外c-kit蛋白表达种间差异说明在它的调控下不仅导致蝗虫卵子发生进程的迥异而且可能参与维系种间生殖隔离等机制. 相似文献

Aspartate kinase (AK, EC 2.7.2.4) and homoserine dehydrogenase (HSDH, EC 1.1.1.3) have been partially purified and characterised from immature sorghum seeds. Two peaks of AK activity were eluted by anion‐exchange chromatography [diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)‐Sephacel] with 183 and 262 mM KCl, and both activities were inhibited by lysine. Similarly, two peaks of HSDH activity were eluted with 145 and 183 mM KCl; the enzyme activity in the first peak in elution order was shown to be resistant to threonine inhibition, whereas the second was sensitive to threonine inhibition. However, following gel filtration chromatography (Sephacryl S‐200), one peak of AK activity co‐eluted with HSDH and both activities were sensitive to threonine inhibition, suggesting the presence of a bifunctional threonine‐sensitive AK–HSDH isoenzyme with a molecular mass estimated as 167 kDa. The activities of AK and HSDH were studied in the presence of lysine, threonine, methionine, valine, calcium, ethylene glycol bis(2‐aminoethylether)‐N,N,N′N′‐tetraacetic acid, calmodulin, S‐adenosylmethionine (SAM), S‐2‐aminoethyl‐l ‐cysteine (AEC) and increasing concentrations of KCl. AK was shown to be inhibited by threonine and lysine, confirming the existence of two isoenzymes, one sensitive to threonine and the other sensitive to lysine, the latter being predominant in sorghum seeds. Methionine, SAM plus lysine and AEC also inhibited AK activity; however, increasing KCl concentrations and calcium did not produce any significant effect on AK activity, indicating that calcium does not play a role in AK regulation in sorghum seeds. HSDH also exhibited some inhibition by threonine, but the majority of the activity was not inhibited, thus indicating the existence of a threonine‐sensitive isoenzyme and a second predominant threonine‐insensitive isoenzyme. Valine and SAM plus threonine also inhibited HSDH; however, increasing concentrations of KCl and calcium had no inhibitory effect. 相似文献

Locusts (Schistocerca gregaria) use a distinctive motor pattern to extend the tibia of a hind leg rapidly in a kick. The necessary force is generated by an almost isometric contraction of the extensor tibiae muscle restrained by the co-contraction of the flexor tibiae (co-contraction phase) and aided by the mechanics of the femoro-tibial joint. The stored energy is delivered suddenly when the flexor muscle is inhibited. This paper analyses the activity of motor neurons to the major hind leg muscles during kicking, and relates it to tibial movements and the resultant forces.During the co-contraction phase flexor tibiae motor neurons are driven by apparently common sources of synaptic inputs to depolarized plateaus at which they spike. The two excitatory extensor motor neurons are also depolarized by similar patterns of synaptic inputs, but with the slow producing more spikes at higher frequencies than the fast. Trochanteral depressors spike at high frequency, the single levator tarsi at low frequency, and common inhibitors 2 and 3 spike sporadically. Trochanteral levators, depressor tarsi, and a retractor unguis motor neuron are hyperpolarized.Before the tibia extends all flexor motor neurons are hyperpolarized simultaneously, two common inhibitors, and the levator trochanter and depressor tarsi motor neurons are depolarized. Later, but still before the tibial movement starts, the extensor tibiae and levator tarsi motor neurons are hyperpolarized. After the movement has started, the extensor motor neurons are hyperpolarized further and the depressor trochanteris motor neurons are also hyperpolarized, indicating a contribution of both central and sensory feedback pathways.Variations in the duration of the co-contraction of almost twenty-fold, and in the number of spikes in the fast extensor tibiae motor neuron from 2–50 produce a spectrum of tibial extensions ranging from slow and weak, to rapid and powerful. Flexibility in the networks producing the motor pattern therefore results in a range of movements suited to the fluctuating requirements of the animal. 相似文献

defense (potassium) and a common allelochemical (rutin) were examined in a factorial experiment. To manipulate potassium levels,
a modified diet with limited plant material was used as the base and KCl and rutin added. Temperature affected efficiency
of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), time to head-capsule slippage, stadium
duration, relative consumption rate (RCR) and relative growth rate (RGR) but not food consumed, biomass gained and approximate
digestibility (AD). Potassium concentration influenced all of the variables except AD, time to head-capsule slippage (HCS),
duration of the stadium and percent of stadium time to HCS. Rutin impacted negatively on all of the variables except food
consumed. Compared to larvae on the non-rutin diets, fewer larvae fed rutin survived through molt initiation to ecdysis and
fewer successfully completed ecdysis. Temperature and rutin had interactive effects for AD, ECD, RCR, RGR, time to HCS, and
percent of stadium required to reach HCS. Rutin and potassium had interactive effects for biomass gained, RCR, ECI, time to
HCS, duration of stadium, and percent of stadium required to reach HCS. Comparison of larval responses on an average potassium
concentration (3.1%) versus high concentration (6.1%) showed that at the low daytime temperature increasing potassium concentration
depressed biomass gained, but at the warmer temperatures potassium concentration had little effect unless rutin was present.
In addition, potassium concentration had little impact on ECI unless rutin was present. These results indicate that significant
interactive effects occur among temperature, potassium and rutin, and thus suggest that such interactive effects on larval
performance may be common under field conditions, which are characterized by varying temperature and different concentrations

The meiotic behavior of Robertsonian heterozygotes of Dichroplus pratensis was analyzed in order to establish the nature of the fusion polymorphisms (stable or transient) that occur in the species. The range of fusion frequencies varies widely for each fusion studied and populations with extreme frequencies exist, which could indicate a tendency for the loss or fixation of a given rearrangement. Our results revealed that no significant correlation exists between orientation (convergent and non-convergent) in PMI and MI and fusion frequency, nor between aneuploidy and fusion frequency. Thus, orientation and segregation seem to be independent of the frequencies of the fusions, which also do not appear to affect severely the fertility of heterozygotes. During a survey for grasshopper pathogens in Argentina in 2005-2006, individual Covasacris pallidinota from halophylous grasslands in Laprida, Buenos Aires province were found to be infected with a microsporidium. Infection was restricted to the salivary gland epithelial cells. The microsporidium produced ovocylindrical spores averaging 2.6 ± 0.28 × 1.4 ± 0.12 μm (range 2.2-3.4 × 1.1-1.7 μm), which resembled in size and shape the spores of Liebermannia patagonica and L. dichroplusae, two recently described species that also parasitize Argentine grasshoppers. The life cycle of the microsporidium included the formation of polynucleate, diplokaryotic, moniliform, merogonial plasmodia wrapped in flattened cisterns of the host endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Plasmodia divided to produce diplokaryotic cells. The latter underwent elongation, dissociation of diplokarya counterparts, vacuolization, dismantling of the host ER envelope, and deposition of electron-dense material outside the plasma membrane. The resultant binucleate sporogonial plasmodia divided into two uninucleate sporoblasts, which eventually transformed into spores. Uninucleate spores contained a lamellar polaroplast, embraced by an elongated polar sac, anchoring disc, 3-5 polar filament coils, and a cluster of anastomizing tubules (sporoblast trans-Golgi, posterosome) at the posterior end. Sequence similarity of the SSU rDNA of the newly discovered microsporidium (Genbank accession no. EU709818) to L. patagonica and L. dichroplusae was 99% and 97%, respectively, suggesting that the three species belong to one genus. All three species fell into one clade in SSU rDNA-based phylogenetic trees produced by neighbor joining, maximum parsimony, and maximum likelihood analyses with 100% statistical support. We assign the name Liebermannia covasacrae to this microsporidium. It can be easily differentiated from both congeners by host species, tissue tropism, type of sporogony, and several features of morphology. Comparison of the three Liebermannia spp. demonstrates that the nuclear phase (dikaryotic versus monokaryotic spores) and type of sporogony (polysporous versus disporous) may vary in closely related species. 相似文献

Following selection of an appropriate egg-laying site desert locusts lay their eggs at depths in soil by digging their abdomen into the substrate using rhythmic movements of their abdomen and hard, sclerotised ovipositor valves. We have analysed the role of contact chemoreception on egg-laying behaviour and on the rhythmic digging movements of the valves. All chemicals tested acted aversively and reduced both the duration spent egg-laying and the number of eggs laid, with the concentration at which they became aversive being dependent on whether the chemical was normally present in the diet. Chemicals such as sucrose and a lysine glutamate salt prevented egg-laying only at much higher concentrations than known anti-feedants such as nicotine hydrogen tartrate and hydroquinine. Similarly for animals in which fictive digging movements were induced all chemicals stopped the digging rhythm, with sucrose and sodium chloride inhibiting the rhythm at relatively high concentrations compared to NHT and hydroquinone. We conclude that for both egg-laying behaviour and rhythmic digging that the aversiveness of a chemical rather than its identity per se plays a major role in regulating behaviour. 相似文献

The grasshopper ERG displays a rapid recovery of responsivity following the onset of a background light. Although observed earlier in skate and frog, this phenomenon has not previously been seen in an invertebrate. Furthermore, a period of hyperresponsivity exists in early dark adaptation and resembles that found in skate and frog. Thus, recovery in the light and hyperresponsivity in the dark seem to be corollaries of each other. Finally, spectral sensitivity of the ERG is determined and two peaks are found: one at 510 nm and the other at 360 nm. The former appears to be a rhodopsin-mediated sensitivity but the latter does not and they are not clearly separated by chromatic adaptation. 相似文献

Summary The tibial contact chemosensilla of Schistocerca americana contain several neurons, one of which responds to nicotine hydrogen tartrate and certain other compounds. The activity of this cell is sometimes briefly interrupted by the firing of a second cell in the same sensillum which usually only fires a few times in the first 500 ms of a stimulation. The evidence suggests that the nicotine-sensitive cell is directly inhibited by the activity of the second cell. Not all cells in the sensillum produce the same effect. 相似文献

Summary Biomass and energy budgets and food utilization efficiencies of laboratory and wild populations of three Central European grasshopper species, Chorthippus parallelus (Zetterstedt), C. biguttulus (L.), and Gomphocerus rufus (L.), were studied between 1979 and 1984. Larval consumption is relatively low in C. biguttulus (C=4.3 kJ/ind.) compared with C. parallelus and G. rufus (4.9 kJ/ind.). In the adult phase (maturity) consumption rates of C. biguttulus and G. rufus (6.9 kJ/ind.) are similar, but higher in C. parallelus (7.3 kJ/ind.). The energy content decreases from the egg (23.2–24.3 J/mg dw) and body tissue (22.1–23.2 J/mg dw) to faeces (16.6–18.1 J/mg dw). The energy contents of faeces differ significantly between the species, indicating different rates of food conversion (on Dactylis glomerata). On average, the assimilation rates are about 30%, slightly lower in G. rufus. Approximate digestibility (A/C) ranges from 28.2 (G. rufus) to 35.7 (C. biguttulus) without great differences between larvae and adults. In contrast, the efficiency of conversion of ingested food (P/C) differs significantly between larval (10–11) and adult stages (3.4–3.6), and so to a much higher degree does the efficiency of conversion of digested food (P/A), from 30.3–33.5 in the larval to 9.5–14.9 in the adult period. Based on 5-year (C. parallelus) and 2-year studies (G. rufus) of the population dynamics and life tables, the energy budgets of wild populations were calculated and summarized into diagrams. Depending on the annually fluctuating densities, in both populations about 1%–2% of net primary production was consumed, and another 5%–9% was cut and dropped. The proportion of production of the grasshopper populations (body tissue) used for egg production differs in C. parallelus (28%) and G. rufus (44%). The energy cycling owing to energy storage in the living eggs amounts to 2%–3% of the total energy consumed by the population. The results are compared with the available data for grasshoppers in the literature. 相似文献

In gomphocerine grasshoppers the neuromuscular patterns of stridulatory hindleg movements are produced by metathoracic rhythm generators under the control of cephalic command neurons. Injections of cholinergic agonists into the protocerebrum activate this command system which induces the performance of stridulatory sequences, resembling natural species specific movements. Injections of GABA, glycine and picrotoxin into the central protocerebrum of the species Omocestus viridulus, Chorthippus mollis and Ch. biguttulus revealed a contribution of inhibitory mechanisms to the control of the stridulatory behaviour. The experiments suggest that inhibition interferes with the cephalic command systems at three levels: (1) sustained inhibition through picrotoxin sensitive receptors acting on all command units while grasshoppers are at rest, and during stridulation on all command units except the one activating the pattern generators of the currently performed movements; (2) premature termination of song sequences, experimentally induced by injections of GABA and glycine; and (3) coupling of a timing mechanism that terminates a song sequence or its subunits with a particular movement pattern after specific durations. These results together with those from previous studies on the pharmacological activation of stridulatory behaviour suggest that a balance of inhibitory and excitatory inputs to the command system selects the appropriate song type and controls its performance.
