Temperature data are presented from the littoral zones of two lakes in North Wales, Llyn Coron and Llyn Dinas. Recording, mainly on a continuous basis, was over a two year period. Despite their different situations, the lakes had similar temperature regimes. Regional weather factors were of greater importance than local variations. However, some differences were present, especially during the summer months. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the temperature relationships of Nemoura avicularis Morton (Plecoptera) and Leptophlebia vespertina (L.) (Ephemeroptera), common species in Llyn Dinas but absent from Llyn Coron. Aspects considered included nymphal temperature tolerance and the effect of temperature on egg development and emergence. From the background of the results, it was concluded that the differences in temperature regime between the two lakes were insufficient to explain the absence of the two species from Llyn Coron.  相似文献

A total of 1136 Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera were caught from March 1993 to March 1994 at the Weidlingbach, a first to fourth order forest brook near Vienna. Austria, using pyramid-type emergence traps at tree sampling stations (390, 360 and 260 m above sea level). Five species comprised 67.1 % of the catch: the ephemeropterans Paraleptophlebia submarginata (Stephens), Habroleptoides confusa Sartori and Jacob and Habrophlebia lauta Eaton, and the plecopterans Nemoura flexuosa Aubert and Leuctra hippopus Kempny. Most taxa emerged from April to August, but the plecopterans Leuctra prima Kempny and Capnia bifrons (Newman) were caught early in the year (January to April), and Leuctra digitata Kempny (Plecoptera), Chaetopteryx fusca Brauer and Chaetopteryx major McLachlan (Trichoptera) emerged in September and October. In Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, similarities between species groups were highest at the two upstream sampling stations; in Plecoptera and in pooled taxa, however, similarities were highest at the middle and downstream sites. Except in Trichoptera, diversity was highest at the middle station situated at 360 m above sea level.  相似文献

As a part of weir-pond-ecosystem project, the growth patterns and food habits of Baetis rhodani (Ephemeroptera), Capnia pygmaea (Plecoptera), and Diura nanseni (Plecoptera) were investigated. B. rhodani was bivoltine. The winter generation consisted of three cohorts. C. pygmaea and D. nanseni accomplished their nymphal growth in one year. The predominate food consumed by B. rhodani and C. pygmaea was detritus. Variations in the diet of these detritivores are discussed in relation to microdistribution and possible competition. The most common prey items of the carnivorous D. nanseni were chironomids and nymphs of B. rhodani and C. pygmaea . Prey shortage is suggested to be the reason for small D. nanseni eating detritus.  相似文献

Twenty stations were sampled monthly during the Ice free period (June-September) in 1972. Emergence traps, emptied daily, were also employed. The major macroinvertebrates in the exposed zone were Ephemeroptera, Gammarus lacustris , Trichoptera, Chironomidae, Plecoptera and Coleoptera, and these constituted over 90% of total numbers. Densities of G. lacustris , Ephemeroptera, Tipulidae and Plecoptera showed a positive correlation with detritus. No significant relationship was found for the other taxa. Nearly 70% of the fauna emerged, and did so during the period from June to September. Chironomidae, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Tipulidae accounted for nearly all emergence and their total average annual emergence was 372 cal m−2. Of this total, Chironomidae constituted 28%, Ephemeroptera 28%, Plecoptera and Trichoptera 15% each and Tipulidae 4%.  相似文献

Plecoptera constitute a numerically and ecologically significant component in mountain streams all over the world, but little is known of their life cycles in Asia. The life cycle of Nemoura sichuanensis and its relationship to water temperature was investigated during a 4‐year study in a headwater stream (known as the Jiuchong torrent) of the Xiangxi River in Central China. Size structure histograms suggest that the life cycle was univoltine, and the relationships between the growth of Nemoura sichuanensis, physiological time, and effective accumulated water temperature were described using logistic regressions. The growth pattern was generally similar within year classes but growth rates did vary between year‐classes. Our field data suggest a critical thermal threshold for emergence in Nemoura sichuanensis, that was close to 9 °C. The total number of physiological days required for completing larval development was 250 days. The effective accumulated water temperature was 2500 degree‐days in the field. Development during the life cycle increased somewhat linearly with the physiological time and the effective accumulated water temperature, but some non‐linear relationships were best developed by logistic equations. Some streams near Dorset in south-central Ontario suffer from acid precipitation via run-off and seepage from thin soils with little buffering capacity. A spring-summer survey of eight headwater streams revealed some characteristics of their insect communities which could be correlated with pH. The streams could be divided into three groups according to pH and community structure. In the most acid group (annual pH range 4.3–4.8), Ephemeroptera were absent from two streams although mature Leptophlebia were collected just after spring thaw from the most acid one (pH 4.3–4.5). One of these three streams also lacked Plecoptera but the others had two or three genera, all shredders. The second group of three streams (pH 5.0–6.3), with one exception, did support Ephemeroptera (3–4 genera) and Plecoptera (1–4 genera), most of the latter being shredders. In all six of these acid streams, Trichoptera were more diverse and more dense than Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera; again, shredders were clearly dominant, especially the limnephilid caddisfly, Frenesia difficilis (Walker). These six streams also had similar chironomid communities (densities were an order of magnitude higher than other insects). Dominance by Chironomini and abundant Tanypodinae typified the most acid streams. In contrast, the two streams in the third group (pH 5.3–6.7) had richer and more balanced communities in general with relatively fewer shredders (no Frenesia), more collectors, and fewer Chironomini and Tanypodinae. As a field experiment showed that autumn-shed leaves decomposed more slowly in acid than in non-acid streams, summer-growing shredders may benefit from the pulse of acidity at snowmelt.  相似文献

Aspects of the nymphal/adult developmental change were investigated in biometric studies of several species of Plecoptera: Nemouridae near Schlitz, Hesse, Germany. Preliminary information on the mayfly, Baetis vernus Curtis, is also provided. Nemourid nymphs pass through 3 wing bearing stages before reaching adulthood. Instars can be identified by their characteristic shapes, as expressed by the wing length/head width (WL/HW) ratio. Size does not allow instar discrimination, mainly due to sexual size differences. HW is ca 10% larger in last instar female than in male nemourid nymphs; exuviae shed at the moult to adult represent about 14% of nymphal ash free dry weight (AFDW). Biomass lost with exuviae during the many larval moults should be accounted for in estimates of production. Freshly emerged nemourid females are about 6% larger and 30% heavier than males. The HW/AFDW relationship is the same in both sexes. Through terrestrial feeding during adult life, males double their weight on average. Mature females are up to three times heavier than freshly emerged ones. They invest about 30% of their final AFDW in reproduction.Shape of last instar nymphal Baetis was expressed as the ratio wing length/mesonotum length. It is size-dependent, a characteristic, instar-specific shape may not occur in this mayfly. Nymphal and subimaginal exuviae together represent about 14% of last instar nymphal dry weight. Females of Baetis are about 55% heavier than males. Unlike in Plecoptera, the size/weight (ML/AFDW) relationship differs between sexes.  相似文献

Water beetles were examined for use as potential biodiversity indicators in continental aquatic ecosystems in a semiarid Mediterranean region, the Segura river basin (SE Spain). The indicator value of water beetles was investigated by examining the degree to which their species richness patterns was correlated with other groups (Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Mollusca, Heteroptera and Ephemeroptera), and the efficiency of water beetle area networks (selected by complementarity) in conserving overall groups richness. The species richness patterns of Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera were significantly correlated with the Remaining Richness value (RR), defined as the total number of species found at a site (of all six groups examined) minus the number of species belonging to the considered indicator group. Area networks for Coleoptera selected by complementarity represented the highest RR percentage (84.46%) and contained more than 78% species of each group. Furthermore, water beetles meet most of the criteria proposed in the literature for choosing biodiversity indicator taxa. In our study, the correlation values and the percentage of species represented by family, genus and species complementary networks were similar and we suggest that the higher taxa of water beetles (genera or families) can be used as biodiversity surrogates for cost-effective practical surveys.  相似文献

Wolbachia is a genus of intracellular bacteria typically found within the reproductive systems of insects that manipulates those systems of their hosts. While current estimates of Wolbachia incidence suggest that it infects approximately half of all arthropod species, these estimates are based almost entirely on terrestrial insects. No systematic survey of Wolbachia in aquatic insects has been performed. To estimate Wolbachia incidence among aquatic insect species, we combined field‐collected samples from the Missouri River (251 samples from 58 species) with a global database from previously published surveys. The final database contained 5,598 samples of 2,687 total species (228 aquatic and 2,459 terrestrial). We estimate that 52% (95% CrIs: 44%–60%) of aquatic insect species carry Wolbachia, compared to 60% (58%–63%) of terrestrial insects. Among aquatic insects, infected orders included Odonata, Coleoptera, Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, and Plecoptera. Incidence was highest within aquatic Diptera and Hemiptera (69%), Odonata (50%), and Coleoptera (53%), and was lowest within Ephemeroptera (13%). These results indicate that Wolbachia is common among aquatic insects, but incidence varies widely across orders and is especially uncertain in those orders with low sample sizes such as Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera.  相似文献

Summary Nemurella pictetii Klapálek, 1900 (Plecoptera: Nemouridae) has bi-or trimodal emergence patterns in Central Europe. The emergence threshold temperature is about 8°C. Egg development is direct. The slopes of regressions describing its temperature dependence do not differ significantly between English, Norwegian and German populations, but the intercepts (i.e., the incubation period at 0°C) do. Regular sampling of a benthic population near Schlitz, in Hesse, West Germany, showed that part of the offspring of the first emergence group grew quickly and produced a second emergence peak. The remaining offspring of the first generation grew more slowly and overwintered, together with the offspring of the second emergence peak. This population exhibits partial bivoltinism. The potential for bivoltinism was also shown in laboratory rearings of a German population at a constant 14°C: many eggs yielded normal adults after about 120 days. Larval growth rates were up to 2.2% body length day-1, much higher than for English Nemurella (unimodal emergence), or any other stonefly. The thermal sum (degree-days above 0°C) accumulated between the two emergence peaks, at the German sites studied, resembled cumulated degree-days in a laboratory culture. For an Austrian population with trimodal emergence, degree-days accumulated in the field were lower, suggesting a lower temperature demand and partial trivoltinism. This is the only case of confirmed plurivoltinism in Plecoptera. Nemurella pictetii seems to have lost seasonal life cycle cues, enabling the opportunistic use of favourable local conditions. Population synchrony appears to be regulated by the thermal demand for development and the emergence threshold temperature.  相似文献

Field studies of Nemoura arctica and N. viki showed that the two species preferred different biotopes and indicated differences in their life‐cycles. N. arctica seemed to have a semivoltine life‐cycle, at least in some years, this was not the case for N. viki.

Laboratory studies showed that the temperature tolerance of the eggs of N. arctica was wider than for those of N. viki. The length of the egg incubation period of both species was influenced by the ambient temperature, but no significant interspecific difference existed between the regression lines of the relationship between the temperature (T°C) and egg incubation period (Y days), as given by the regression equation Y = aT?b for the log values. Reared at constant food supply, nymphal growth occurred in two periods. Firstly a rapid growth to about 4 mm, followed by a period of slow growth until emergence. During the first period growth (G)at (D) days was linear, according to the simple linear regression equation G = a+bD . The temperature tolerance of the nymphs of N. arctica was wider than for those of N. viki and significant interspecific differences between the species in growth were recorded at relatively high rearing temperatures, such as 12° and 16°C, but not at low temperatures. At constant food supply, nymphal growth was greatly influenced by the rearing temperature. At a mean temperature of 16°C N. arctica nymphs grew rapidly and emerged after 120 days; whereas at a mean temperature of 4°C growt h was slow and the nymphs did not even manage to reach the emergence stage after 700 days.  相似文献

Climate change poses a considerable threat to the biodiversity of high latitude and altitude ecosystems, with alpine regions across the world already showing responses to warming. However, despite probable hydrological change as alpine glaciers and snowpacks shrink, links between alpine stream biota and reduced meltwater input are virtually unknown. Using data from the French Pyrénées, we demonstrate that taxonomic richness and total abundance of stream macroinvertebrates increase significantly as meltwater (snow melt and glacier melt) contributions to river flow decrease. Macroinvertebrate species showed a gradation of optimum meltwater conditions at which they persist. For example: Habroleptoides berthelemyi (Ephemeroptera), Perla grandis (Plecoptera) and Rhithrogena spp. (Ephemeroptera) increased in abundance when meltwater contributions to streamflow decrease, whereas in contrast, Rhyacophila angelieri (Trichoptera) and Diamesa latitarsis spp. (Diptera) decreased in abundance. Changes in alpine stream macroinvertebrate community composition as meltwater contributions decline were associated with lower suspended sediment concentration, and higher water temperature, electrical conductivity and pH. Our results suggest α diversity (at a site) of streams presently fed by meltwaters will increase with future meltwater reductions. However, β diversity (between‐sites) will be reduced as snow melt and glacier melt decrease because the habitat heterogeneity associated with spatiotemporal variability of water source contributions will become lower as meltwater contributions decline. Extinction of some endemic alpine aquatic species (such as the Pyrenean caddis fly R. angelieri) is predicted with reduced meltwater inputs, leading to decreases in γ diversity (region). Our identification of significant links between meltwater production and stream macroinvertebrate biodiversity has wider implications for the conservation of alpine river ecosystems under scenarios of climate change induced glacier and snowpack loss.  相似文献

Benthic insect communities (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Coleoptera, Trichoptera) were studied together with water temperature and environmental parameters in streams between June 2000 and June 2001. The sampling area consisted of 20 sites in small and medium-sized streams located in the lower mountainous area of Central Europe. Temperature was recorded nearly continuously and several physicochemical and environmental variables were assessed. Macroinvertebrates were sampled both in spring and summer. Data-sets of species abundance and occurrence were analysed using multivariate techniques and were correlated to the thermal and environmental conditions of the streams. The temperature preferences of the species were compared to published data-sets on their autecological characteristics. Up to 29% of the variability in the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Coleoptera community was explained by summer temperature variation in the data-sets for both small and medium-sized streams. A smaller, but significant part of the variability in species distribution was explained by conductivity, substratum type, and the percent coverage of local riparian forest. Compared to small streams, temperature was less important for the macroinvertebrate composition in medium-sized streams. This result is likely due to the more tolerant, eurythermic species composition in larger streams. A total of 33 Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Coleoptera and Trichoptera taxa were positively correlated and 28 taxa were negatively correlated to summer temperature patterns. The temperature preferences of taxa considered in this study were related to species traits, such as egg dormancies and life cycle plasticity.  相似文献

In freshwater systems, parasitological studies have mainly been carried out on vertebrates and molluscs, but little is known about parasites of aquatic insects. We describe the trematodes and nematodes parasitizing the benthic insects of an Andean Patagonian stream and the presence of parasites in the terrestrial adult stages. Members of 3 of 20 insect taxa were found to be parasitized by larval nematodes, and members of six taxa harbored metacercariae of digeneans. In benthic samples, chironomids, simuliids (Order Diptera), and baetids (Order Ephemeroptera) harbored mermithid larvae (Nematoda). The stonefly Antarctoperla michaelseni (Order Plecoptera), the caddisfly Smicridea annulicornis (Order Trichoptera), a watersnipe fly (Order Diptera: Athericidae), and three species of leptophlebiid mayflies (Order Ephemeroptera) were parasitized by encysted plagiorchiid metacercariae (Order Plagiorchiida). Most metacercariae were found in the three species of mayflies with prevalences ranging 15–63% and mean intensities ranging 1.2–4.9. Prevalence declined from summer to early winter, probably because of the emergence of infected nymphs and the recruitment of uninfected new cohorts. The imagos had live metacercariae with higher prevalences and intensities of infection than nymphs. We suggest that these plagiorchiids have an allogenic life cycle, involving a terrestrial definitive host.  相似文献

Recent biogeographical studies have shown positive correlations between plant/vertebrate species richness and human population presence. The same pattern has been reported for Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Plecoptera (stoneflies) and Trichoptera (caddisflies) (EPT) amongst European countries. This is surprising as EPT are bio-indicators of stream pollution and most local studies report higher species richness of these macro-invertebrates where human influences on water quality are lower. Using a newly collated taxonomic dataset, we studied whether the species richness of EPT is related to human population size at finer resolutions (Italy's regions, provinces and 10×10 km2 UTM cells) controlling for sampling effort, variations in area and for spatial autocorrelation. At all study grains, observed EPT species richness was strongly correlated to the number of records available for the same taxon. At the regional level, the observed number of Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera species significantly increased with increasing human population size. At the provincial level, observed species richness decreased significantly with increasing human population size for Ephemeroptera and did not vary significantly for Plecoptera and Trichoptera. At the finest grain scale, there were significant negative correlations of observed Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera species richness with human population size, although the proportion of variance explained was very low. These results were broadly confirmed when analyzing the estimated number of species using the formula of Chao2. Our analysis confirms the scale-dependence of the human population–biodiversity correlation. Over broad scales more populated regions tend to have more species than less populated ones. Restricting the study grain, the positive EPT species–people relationship disappears and turns into a negative one. Our findings suggest a challenge also for the conservation of regional EPT diversity.  相似文献

Field studies of respiration in stream insects are few in comparison with laboratory studies. To evaluate the influence of temperature and oxygen along altitudinal gradients we measured the respiration rate of fully acclimatized larval Trichoptera, Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera under similar field conditions in streams from 400 to 3800 m above sea level in tropical Ecuador. Mean active respiration rates of the animals at 3800 m were approximately half of those at 400 m. Trichoptera showed a slightly larger difference in respiration with altitude than Ephemeroptera. Comparative respiration measurements at 100 and 50% oxygen saturation indicated that highland animals reduced their oxygen uptake more than their counterparts in the lowland when oxygen availability decreased. The temperature response of respiration calculated between the insect assemblages at different altitudes showed a mean assemblage Q10−value of 1.50. Trichopteran larvae had a slightly stronger temperature response (Q10 of 1.68) than ephemeropterans (Q10 of 1.30). These community Q10-values are considerably lower than the mean value of 2.36 found in single species in the laboratory. The weak community-wide response of respiration to temperature in tropical streams is probably due to full acclimatization of the component species to stable and narrow temperature ranges. Adaptations to the low oxygen availability at high altitude probably consist of a suite of genetic physiological and behavioural features.  相似文献

  • 1 Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera in two sites of the Upper Rhône River (France) were examined using multivariate analyses to determine: (i) relationships among seventeen species traits; (ii) habitat utilization of the fifty-five species present; (iii) the relationship between species traits and habitat utilization; (iv) trends of species traits and species richness in a framework of spatial and temporal habitat variability.
  • 2 The species traits having the highest correlation ratios correspond to reproduction or life cycle, behavioural, and morphological characteristics. According to their traits, species of Baetidae, Caenidae, and Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) are opposite species of Perlidae and Perlodidae (Plecoptera).
  • 3 The distribution of species in thirteen habitat types of the Upper Rhône River floodplain demonstrates a transverse gradient from the main channel to the oxbow lakes. Plecoptera are restricted to the different main channel habitats; in contrast, Ephemeroptera families have a broader distribution with Baetidae and Leptophlebiidae occurring in most floodplain habitats.
  • 4 Plecoptera exhibit a significant relationship between species traits and habitat utilization but no relationship is evident for Ephemeroptera. Baetidae use many habitat types and have diverse species traits; in contrast, Leptophlebiidae, Heptageniidae, and Caenidae use many habitat types but each family has a rather uniform set of traits.
  • 5 Trends in species traits were significantly related to both the spatial and temporal variability of habitats. Considering only temporal variability, the distribution of species trait modalities (= categories) corresponded well to predictions on trends in the river habitat templet for ‘minimum age at reproduction’ and ‘potential longevity’, and in general for ‘descendants per reproductive cycle’, ‘reproductive cycles per year’, ‘potential size’, and ‘body flexibility’ trends in six other traits did not match predictions.
  • 6 No trends in species richness were evident in spatial–temporal framework of habitat variability.

Predatory insects that depend upon particular prey animals are commonly regulated by the prey animal’s abundance. Nymphs of the giant water bug Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) are predators regarded as specialists in feeding on tadpoles. We studied the ontogenetic diet shift of aquatic nymphs by quantifying instar abundance and by analyzing captured prey and prey relative abundance during the period of rice irrigation in three localities. We also evaluated the contribution of major prey items (tadpoles, frogs, and Odonata nymphs) on specific growth rates of each nymphal stage in a rearing experiment. First to third-instar nymphs of K. deyrolli fed mainly on tadpoles, regardless of differences in prey availability. Nymphs of subsequent fourth and fifth instar stages shifted from tadpoles to other prey animals within each rice field. A rearing experiment demonstrated that giant water bug nymphs provided with tadpoles had greater specific growth rates at all nymphal stages, except for the final stage, than nymphs fed other prey (frogs and Odonata nymphs). The emergence of young K. deyrolli nymphs seemed to coincide with the period during which tadpoles became abundant in the rice fields. Consumption of tadpoles seems important to allow the nymph to complete its larval development in an unstable temporary habitat. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

  • 1 Ten years of hourly water temperature data for three river sites in south-west England were used to investigate the longer-term thermal effects of river regulation. The impact of reservoir impoundment on downstream invertebrate and trout development were simulated using daily mean temperature data in conjunction with published biological models.
  • 2 The main effects of regulation on water temperature were to increase the mean value, eliminate freezing conditions, depress summer maxima, delay the annual cycle and reduce diel fluctuation. These impacts persisted over a distance of at least 5km below the dam but declined downstream, especially for seasonal and diurnal variations.
  • 3 Simulations suggested that regulation is likely to have had a greater impact on the development of brown trout (Salmo trutta) than on the development of one Ephemeroptera and four Plecoptera species. Trout fry were predicted to emerge up to 57 days earlier, and to weigh up to 67% more by the end of the year following swim-up, in the regulated compared with the unregulated river.
  • 4 Marked inter-annual contrasts in the physical and biological consequences of impoundment were evident, indicating that long-term studies are required to define properly the effects of river regulation.

Immunological analyses of the gut contents of 1769 adult and 486 nymphal instars of the lesser waterboatman, Cymatia bonsdorfi, from Lough Corrib, western Ireland, were performed using a double immunodiffusion technique. Antisera against six potential prey categories (Oligochaeta, Cladocera, Copepoda, Gammarus, Diptera and Ephemeroptera), identified on the basis of field and laboratory observations, were utilized. Diptera larvae formed over 90% of the diet of adult bugs and were also the principal prey group of all nymphal instars.  相似文献
