Abstract. Fern sporophagy is reported in species of Cryptophagidae, Mycetophagidae and Anthribidae occurring on the Juan Fernandez Islands, Chile. The following taxa are described and/or discussed: Cryptophagidae: Cryptothelypterus gen.n., with five species: C.obrieni sp.n., C.pteropilosus sp.n., C.selkirki (Bruce) comb.n., C.skottsbergi (Bruce) comb.n., and C.splendens (Bruce) comb.n.; Mycetophagidae: Filicivora gen.n., with one species, F.chilensis (Philippi & Philippi) comb.n.; and Anthribidae: Opisolia lenis Jordan. A key to the species of Cryptothelypterus is provided. Convergent adaptations for fern sporophagy in these groups are discussed, hypotheses are given for the evolution of this habit, and comments are made on wing atrophy.  相似文献

The Cimicidae is a family of blood‐dependent ectoparasites in which dispersion capacity is greatly associated with host movements. Bats are the ancestral and most prevalent hosts for cimicids. Cimicids have a worldwide distribution matching that of their hosts, but the global classification is incomplete, especially for species outside the most common Cimicidae taxa. In this study, we place a little‐studied cimicid species, Bucimex chilensis, within a comprehensive molecular phylogeny of Cimicidae by sequencing the genomic regions of this and other closely related species. For this study, we collected B. chilensis females from Myotis chiloensis in Tierra del Fuego, 1,300 km further south than previously known southernmost distribution boundary. We also sequenced COI regions from Primicimex cavernis, a species which together with B. chilensis comprise the entire subfamily Primiciminae. Using Bayesian posterior probability and maximum‐likelihood approaches, we found that B. chilensis and P. cavernis clustered close to each other in the molecular analyses, receiving support from similar morphological features, agreeing with the morphology‐based taxonomic placement of the two species within the subfamily Primiciminae. We also describe a previously unrecognized morphological adaptation of the tarsal structure, which allows the austral bat ectoparasite, B. chilensis, to cling on to the pelage of its known host, the Chilean myotis (Myotis chiloensis). Through a morphological study and behavioral observation, we elucidate how this tarsal structure operates, and we hypothesize that by clinging in the host pelage, B. chilensis is able to disperse effectively to new areas despite low host density. This is a unique feature shared by P. cavernis, the only other species in Primiciminae.  相似文献

Afforestation with the exotic Pinus ponderosa is currently taking place within the natural distributional area of Austrocedrus chilensis, a native conifer of N.W. Patagonia. Annual productivity of the exotic species is double the productivity of the native one. In order to test the hypothesis that these differences in productivity are, at least in part, due to differences in hydraulic characteristics of both species, we measured or estimated several ecophysiological variables in A. chilensis and P. ponderosa trees growing in the same place. Water use (WU) and diameter growth were lower in A. chilensis than in P. ponderosa. Although predawn water potential was relatively constant during the whole growing season, A. chilensis trees showed lower values of this variable than P. ponderosa in a very dry period, suggesting different water sources. Under field conditions, canopy-stomatal (gs) and whole hydraulic conductances, specific hydraulic conductivity and photosynthetic rate (A) were lower in A. chilensis than P. ponderosa. In contrast, instantaneous WU efficiency was higher in A. chilensis than in P. ponderosa. However, gs and A in A. chilensis significantly increased in cut branches of this species suggesting hydraulic limitations on photosynthesis. We hypothesize that hydraulic characteristics of P. ponderosa permit high stomatal conductance for more hours a day than A. chilensis trees, without reaching threshold values of water potential. This can explain, at least in part, differences in C fixation and thus, in productivity between species. In addition, our results suggested a secondary limitation to C fixation in A. chilensis at the photosynthetic apparatus.  相似文献

Abstract Tristerix aphyllus (Loranthaceae) is a bird-dispersed mistletoe that infects several cactus species in central and north-central Chile. At Las Chinchillas National Reserve it parasitizes two species of columnar cacti (Echinopsis chilensis and Eulychnia acida) and its seeds are dispersed exclusively by the Chilean mockingbird Mimus thenca. The prevalence of T. aphyllus on cacti depended on host species and size. Echinopsis chilensis was parasitized at a higher, and E. acida at a lower, frequency than expected from their relative abundances. In both species, the incidence of T. aphyllus parasitism increased with cactus height. Birds perched and deposited seeds primarily on parasitized cacti, which resulted in an aggregated distribution of seeds. By preventing bird perching and thus reducing seed deposition, the long spines of E. chilensis and E. acida may help protect cacti against T. aphyllus infestation. However, the seeds of T. aphyllus produced a slow-growing radicle that reached up to 91 mm long in 43 days. Radicles of this length are unique among mistletoe species and may have evolved to overcome the barrier posed by cactus spines.  相似文献

Floristic notes and geographical distribution of some rare Rhodophyta (Kallymeniaceae and Sebdeniaceae) of the western Mediterranean. Callophyllis laciniata, Kallymenia requienii and Kallymenia lacerata (Kallymeniaceae) and Sebdenia rodrigueziana (Sebdeniaceae) are recorded for the first time in the bay of Naples. Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a photosynthetic pathway found in many plant species from arid and semiarid environments. Few studies aiming to characterise plant species as CAM or C3 account for inter‐population differences in photosynthetic pathway, often relying on samples taken from herbarium material and/or a single plant or population. This may be especially problematic for species growing under contrasting climate conditions, as is the case for species with a wide geographic range. We used Puya chilensis, a species previously reported as CAM and C3, to study among‐population variation in expression of the CAM pathway within its distribution range, which spans a significant climate gradient. We carried out a wide sampling scheme, including five populations and a combination of analytical methods (quantification of nocturnal acidification and stable isotope measurements). The study populations of P. chilensis encompass the entire latitudinal distribution range, from semi‐arid to temperate oceanic climates. Our results indicate that CAM decreased with latitude. However, even in the southern (wetter) populations, where δ13C values were indicative of C3 metabolism, we found some nocturnal acidification. We stress the value of using two methods along with the use of samples from different populations, as this allows more reliable conclusions on the photosynthetic pathway for ‘probable’ CAM species that face varying climate conditions within their distribution ranges.  相似文献

Molecular markers belonging to three different genomes, mitochondrial (cox2‐3 spacer), plastid (RUBISCO spacer), and nuclear (internal transcribed spacer 1), were used to compare Gracilaria chilensis samples collected along the Chilean coast with samples ascribed to G. chilensis from the West Pacific Ocean (New Zealand and Australia). Our data are in agreement with previous studies suggesting two sibling species currently going under the name G. chilensis that co‐occur in New Zealand. One of these, a New Zealand sample previously examined by Bird and others in 1990, is conspecific with G. chilensis from Chile. Finally, our results demonstrate clearly that most of the sequences in GenBank reported as G. chilensis are based on misidentified material.  相似文献

Northern genetic richness and southern purity, but just one species in the Chelonoidis chilensis complex. —Zoologica Scripta, 41, 220–232. The Chelonoidis chilensis complex, the sister group of the famous Galápagos tortoises, is a widely distributed group of South American land tortoises, ranging from the dry Chaco of Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina to northern Patagonia. Within this complex, up to three distinct species have been recognized. Using sequence data of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and length polymorphisms of 10 microsatellite loci, we investigate genetic differentiation among all three nominal species. We find only negligible differentiation, with decreasing genetic diversity from north to south. We conclude that only one species, Chelonoidis chilensis (Gray, 1870), is valid, with C. donosobarrosi ( Freiberg, 1973 ) and C. petersi ( Freiberg, 1973 ) as its junior synonyms. Morphological variation within C. chilensis sensu lato is in accord with the observation that size variation in chelonians follows Bergmann’s rule, with body size increasing with latitude. The observed phylogeographic differentiation inverses the well‐known pattern of southern genetic richness and northern purity from the northern hemisphere, resulting from dispersal from glacial refugia. This implies that in higher latitudes of both hemispheres genetic diversity may decrease with increasing distance from the refugium. For C. chilensis sensu lato, it seems likely that long‐distance dispersal via rafting on the Desaguadero River led to the foundation of the southernmost populations in northern Patagonia during the Holocene.  相似文献

1. Global warming and biological invasions are important threats to biodiversity. Nonetheless, there is little information on how these factors influence performance or life‐history traits of invasive and native species. 2. The effects of temperature on physiological and fitness traits of two invasive alien species (Harmonia axyridis and Hippodamia variegata) and one native species (Eriopis chilensis) of coccinellid were evaluated, testing a model of eurythermality. Eggs of all species were exposed to four temperature treatments (20, 24, 30 and 33 °C). In adult F2 we measured fecundity, locomotor performance, development time (total and per life stage), survival, and preferred body temperature in a thermal gradient. 3. It was found that H. axyridis had comparatively better performance at low temperatures (i.e. 20 °C), while the performance of H. variegata and E. chilensis did not change with temperature or was better at higher temperatures (30 °C). The standardised Levins index showed that all species are eurythermic. E. chilensis had a high niche overlap with the invasive alien ladybird species, rejecting the hypothesis of greater eurythermality of invasive species than native species. 4. Although there were differences in the temperature preferences and in the response of some physiological and life‐history traits of ladybirds to temperature, both the native and invasive alien species are eurythermic, contrary to the prediction. The better performance of H. axyridis at lower temperatures may result in displacement of its current distribution, and thus not all invasive species will respond favourably to global warming.  相似文献

In protected areas of the southern Chilean coastline, the barnacle Jehlius cirratus dominates the upper intertidal zone, the bivalve Perumytilus purpuratus is the dominating species in the intermediate zone and Mytilus chilensis in the middle-lower zone. Varying degrees of aerial respiration were observed in the laboratory for these three sessile invertebrates: 80–100% of the immersed oxygen uptake for Jehlius cirratus, 30–50% for Perumytilus purpuratus and 5–15% for Mytilus chilensis. The pyruvate kinase/phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PK/PEPCK) ratio (adductor muscle) was higher for P. purpuratus than for M. chilensis. J. cirratus had no PEPCK activity in total soft tissues, under the assay conditions used in this study, and PK activity was higher for the cirriped than that of both bivalves. Succinate was produced in both mussels when exposed to hypoxic conditions, but it was not detected in J. cirratus. The kinetic parameters of the PK revealed that M. chilensis presented the highest 0.5 value for PEP and J. cirratus the lowest. Alanine inhibited the PK from M. chilensis to a greater extent (higher nH value) and did not affect the PK of the cirriped. This latter enzyme also presented a marked substrate inhibition, above PEP concentrations of 0.5 mM. The evidence suggests that organisms inhabiting the upper intertidal zone could utilize an aerobic metabolism, given their high aerial respiration capacity, and that the succinate anaerobic pathway could be a more important metabolic strategy in species of the middle-lower intertidal zone. The physiological and biochemical capacities of these three species could thus be correlated with their vertical distribution in the intertidal rocky shore.  相似文献

Prosopis chilensis and Prosopis flexuosa (Fabaceae) are closely related hardwood arboreal species that are widely distributed in the arid regions of Argentina. The development of highly polymorphic markers, such as microsatellites, is desirable for genetic studies of these species. Here, we present the development and characterization of six polymorphic microsatellite markers in P. chilensis and P. flexuosa. These markers showed a polymorphism information content between 0.14 and 0.85 and the number of alleles varied from two to 13 considering both species. All markers revealed a broad cross‐species affinity when tested in seven other Prosopis species. All primers amplified in at least five species.  相似文献

The presence of gigartinine has been used previously as a taxonomic marker for the positive identification in Manukau Harbour (west coast, Auckland) of Gracilaria sp., which has apparently been introduced to New Zealand waters and is easily confused morphologically with the native species, G. chilensis. Thirty two estuarine/harbour populations of Gracilaria in New Zealand were screened for the presence of gigartinine to further test the utility of gigartinine as a reliable species marker. DNA fingerprinting was used to confirm the identity of a subset of the specimens surveyed. Using genetic rather than chemical characterisation, it was discovered that Gracilaria sp. is also present in Orakei Basin (east coast, Auckland). Although a sample from the wild did not have the anticipated gigartinine content, tank cultivation of thalli from this population in an artificially elevated nitrogen environment allowed the plant to accumulate nitrogen as gigartinine. This confirmed the unusual ability of this species of Gracilaria to store nitrogen in this form, unlike the widespread, morphologically similar, G. chilensis.  相似文献

In this article, our knowledge of the geographic distribution of Grania species is expanded by describing seven new species, G rania bekkouchei sp. nov. , G rania brasiliensis sp. nov. , G rania capensis sp. nov. , G rania chilensis sp. nov. , G rania cryptica sp. nov. , G rania hinojosai sp. nov. , and G rania simonae sp. nov. , from poorly investigated regions of the Southern Hemisphere, plus two new species, G rania carolinensis sp. nov. and G rania unitheca sp. nov. , from off the east coast of the USA. An immature achaetous specimen that we call Grania cf. levis was also included. The newly generated data were combined with a previously published data set in order to update the hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships among Grania species. All new species except G . cryptica sp. nov. are supported by both morphological and molecular data. In addition, we find that G . chilensis sp. nov. is structured in at least four distinct populations along the Chilean coast. The species described from South Africa form a monophyletic clade where two are morphologically indistinguishable but diverging in both mitochondrial and nuclear ribosomal genes, and thus we describe them as different species, G . bekkouchei sp. nov. and G . cryptica sp. nov. Among the North Carolinian species, G . unitheca sp. nov. is indicated as a close relative of Grania monospermatheca Erséus & Lasserre, 1976, and G . carolinensis sp. nov. is indicated as a close relative of G. cf. levis. The updated phylogeny is strongly concordant with geographical species distributions, thus supporting a low level of dispersal within this genus, as has previously been hypothesized. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

The coastal deserts of northern Chile show an important latitudinal gradient of aridity with more arid areas to the north of the Atacama Desert than to the south. Several plant species have disjunct distributions that correspond with the extremes of this latitudinal gradient. In this study, using genetic (chloroplast and nuclear DNA), morphological (vegetative and floral traits of various kinds) and climatic and topographic information, we explored ecological and historical events that have putatively shaped patterns of variation among Monttea chilensis populations—a species that shows this disjunct distribution. Through phylogeographic and phylogenetic analyses, two divergent lineages were identified located at the latitudinal extremes. The lineage located northern lineage (NG) of the Atacama Desert showed more genetic diversity and better-resolved phylogeographic structure than the southern lineage (SG). Considerable morphological variation across the geographical range corresponds with these genetic groups. We observed contrasting relationships between floral and vegetative traits: populations from the most arid region NG possessed larger flowers, but smaller vegetative values, and vice versa. Niche modelling and multivariate analyses, including environmental data, revealed different environmental requirements for each lineage. NG plants occur in regions with warmer and drier climatic conditions and at higher altitudes, while SG populations inhabit colder and more humid environments and lower altitudes. The evolutionary history of M. chilensis exhibits a phylogeographical footprint consistent with past fragmentation and allopatric differentiation, where the hyper-arid zone formed by the Atacama Desert clearly acted as an important gene flow barrier. This barrier has led to considerable differentiation in morphology and ecology, resulting in two ecotypes or geographical races, suggesting incipient speciation promoted by local adaptation and geographical isolation.  相似文献

The spatial genetic structure (and gene flow) of parasites with complex life cycles, such as digeneans, has been attributed mainly to the dispersion ability of the most mobile host, which most often corresponds to the definitive host (DH). In this study, we compared the genetic structure and diversity of adult Neolebouria georgenascimentoi in two fish species (DHs) that are extensively distributed along the south‐eastern Pacific (SEP). The analysis was based on the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene sequences of parasites collected between 23°S and 45°S. In total, 202 sequences of N. georgenascimentoi in Pinguipes chilensis isolated from nine sites and 136 sequences of Prolatilus jugularis from five sites were analysed. Our results showed that N. georgenascimentoi is a species complex that includes three different parasite species; however, in this study, only lineage 1 and 2 found in P. chilensis and P. jugularis, respectively, were studied because they are widely distributed along the coastline. Lineage 1 parasites had two common haplotypes with wide distribution and unique haplotypes in northern sites. Lineage 2 had only one common haplotype with wide distribution and a large number of unique haplotypes with greater genetic diversity. Both lineages have experienced recent population expansion. Only lineage 1 exhibited a genetic structure that was mainly associated with a biogeographical break at approximately 30°S along the SEP. Our finding suggests that host access to different prey (=intermediate hosts) could affect the genetic structure of the parasite complex discovered here. Consequently, difference between these patterns suggests that factors other than DH dispersal are involved in the genetic structure of autogenic parasites.  相似文献

Cluster analysis by four methods, ordination by principal component analysis (PCA) and simulation of evolutionary trees (Wagner Trees) were performed on morphological data from 43 characters of eight species of the South American genus Bulnesia (Zygophyllaceae). The results of cluster analysis and principal component analysis in general agree and show that there are three pairs of taxa that appear, or obviously are, closely related. These are the pairs B. arborea–B. carrapo, B. foliosa–B. schickendantzii and B. retama–B. chilensis. These methods also indicate that the southern species B. bonariensis occupies an intermediate position between the pair of northern tropical species (B. arborea, B. carrapo) and the remaining southern species. From the beginning it was assumed that these three multifoliolate species with large flowers may be rather primitive. The Prim network indicates that these three species are closely related among themselves. Also in two of the three Wagner Trees they are placed in a group. In all cases B. sarmientoi is shown as the more remote and isolated of all species. It is regarded as a unique, specialized arboreal species showing extreme reduction in number of leaflets and carpels, leaf and flower size, etc. All graphic representations (Fig. 1–3) show the phenetic similarity or the close phylogenetic relationships of the pairs B. foliosa–B. schickendantzii and B. retama–B. chilensis to each other. These four species would represent a rather advanced group. The most xerophytic species B. retama and B. chilensis are regarded as the most advanced taxa and the most specialized histophysiologically. These occupy extreme and distant positions in PCA diagrams and Prim network, and top positions in the Wagner Trees.  相似文献

Minidiscus species are the smallest centric diatoms of the marine phytoplankton (with diameters ranging from 1.9 to 7.5 μm), and they may be easily overlooked in routine analyses. Three species of the genus occurred in samples collected in the Mexican Pacific Ocean: Minidiscus trioculatus, M. comicus and M. chilensis. The identification of these species represents the first documented records for the Mexican Pacific: Minidiscus trioculatus and M. chilensis off the west coast of Baja California, and M. comicus in the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Minidiscus trioculatus is considered a cosmopolitan species, M. comicus has a wide distribution in subtropical-temperate waters, and M. chilensis may be mainly regarded as a temperate to cold-water form.  相似文献

Phytophthora austrocedrae is a new species isolated from necrotic lesions of stem and roots of Austrocedrus chilensis. It is a homothallic species characterized by semipapillate sporangia, oogonia with amphigynous antheridia, and very slow growth (1–2 mm d−1 on V-8 agar at 17.5 °C optimum temperature). Phylogenetic analysis of ITS rDNA sequence indicates that its closest relative is Phytophthora syringae, another species frequently isolated from soil and streams in A. chilensis forests.  相似文献

We evaluated in common-garden experiments the morphological plasticity to shading of three Convolvulus species that occur in Chile and differ in ecological breadth. Convolvulus arvensis L. is a world weed distributed along the country, and is found in open as well as in shaded habitats. Convolvulus chilensis Pers. is a Chilean endemic species typical of coastal habitats, and is found in open to partially open sites. C. demissus choisy occurs only on slopes of the Andes of Chile and Argentina, habitats with high incidence of solar radiation. We hypothesized that the magnitude of phenotypic plasticity to shading of these species would correlate with their ecological breadth. Shading had a significant effect on internode length, petiole length, stem diameter, stem length, number of branches, leaf area, leaf shape, leaf biomass, and specific leaf area. Species differed in all the morphological traits except leaf biomass. A significant Shading × Species interaction in the two-way ANOVA, i.e. differential plasticity to shading of Convolvulus species, was found for petiole length, stem length, number of branches, leaf shape, and specific leaf area. Contrary to our hypothesis, tests of parallelism showed that, in general, the plasticity to shading of C. chilensis (the species of intermediate ecological breadth) was the greatest, and that of C. arvensis (the weed) and C. demissus (the species of narrow distribution) was similar. Issues of ecotype differentiation, in the case of C. arvensis, and the role of life history traits are raised to explain the observed lack of association between ecological breadth and magnitude of phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Total length (TL) at first sexual maturity was estimated for Atlantoraja castelnaui and Dipturus chilensis from the south‐western Atlantic Ocean. Total length at which 50% of the females were captured (50% c) was less than the TL at first sexual maturity (ML) in both species. Immature females are being captured and thus will not become sexually mature to reproduce because of early fishing mortality. Females of A. castelnaui and D. chilensis reach sexual maturity at TLs of 110–114 cm and 102–106 cm, respectively. Males mature with TL between 91 and 95 cm for A. castelnaui and between 83 and 87 cm for D. chilensis.  相似文献
