Fundamental ecological processes, such as extrinsic mortality, determine population age structure. This influences disease spread when individuals of different ages differ in susceptibility or when maternal age determines offspring susceptibility. We show that Daphnia magna offspring born to young mothers are more susceptible than those born to older mothers, and consider this alongside previous observations that susceptibility declines with age in this system. We used a susceptible‐infected compartmental model to investigate how age‐specific susceptibility and maternal age effects on offspring susceptibility interact with demographic factors affecting disease spread. Our results show a scenario where an increase in extrinsic mortality drives an increase in transmission potential. Thus, we identify a realistic context in which age effects and maternal effects produce conditions favouring disease transmission.  相似文献

The evolution of life history traits is a topic of growing interest in primatology. Traits associated with fertility, such as age at menarche and age at first birth, have great significance for natural selection, and knowing the genetic basis of such demographic traits may improve our understanding of population dynamics. Knowledge of the heritability of reproductive traits may also have practical implications for the management of captive breeding colonies. A maximum likelihood method was used to estimate heritability of age at first birth for a sample of female olive baboons resident at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research. Only animals born at the Foundation that were caged in mixed sex groups and that had previously given birth were included in the sample (n = 316). There were 117 independent individuals and 199 individuals in 35 pedigrees composed of 2 to 26 members. Age at first birth ranged from 3.85 years to 13.11 years. Age at first birth is highly heritable (h2 = 0.87) with no evidence for maternal effects or a dominance genetic component. This level of genetic variability in a fitness-related trait is contrary to evolutionary expectation and may reflect the uniform environment of a captive breeding situation. Thus, the heritability observed in this population may be taken as an upper bound for that in natural populations. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The eruption and wear of the cheek teeth of male Fallow deer from a park and wild population has been studied for age determination purposes. It was found possible to age accurately up to 48 months animals whose date of death was known, whether they were from a wild or park population. It was found that up to at least this age individual and environmental differences affecting animals born in successive years did not mask those resulting fromthe restricted seasonal breeding of this species.
Antler development and body weight were studied in relation to the ages obtained and were found to be of limited value for age estimation.  相似文献

From 1987 to 1991, the North American captive cheetah population increased by 38% (to 266 animals), due to importation and captive breeding. This population constitutes 26% of the world's captive cheetahs and 36% of all reproductively successful animals. Since 1956, 33% of all cubs born in North America occurred during this 5-year period. Because of importation of animals from breeding programs abroad, East African (A. jubatus raineyi) genes have been introduced into the North American cheetah population, and 39% of all cubs born during 1987--1991 were South African/East African hybrids. Also during this time, the breeding population and effective breeding population increased by 86% and 72.6%, respectively. The incidence of infant mortality decreased from 37% (last recorded for the years 1956 to 1986) to 28% (averaged over 5 years), although infant mortality during the latter period ranged from 15% (for unrelated parents) to 41% (for related parents). Management recommendations implemented to increase fecundity and population size appear to be successful, although the founder base of the population still has only been increased from 52 cheetahs in 1986 to 72 animals in 1991. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

As part of a study of the ecology of a high density hippopotamus population (Hippopotamus amphibius) in the Luangwa river in eastern Zambia, a shot sample of 176 males and 161 females was examined. All animals were classified according to age (0–43 years). The female reproductive organs were removed, dissected, examined, and the lactational status was noted. Ovaries and corpora Iutea were weighed, sliced, and all follicles > 5 mm in diameter were recorded. The testes of the males were dissected and weighed. Indications of puberty and maturity in the female were observed in some animals at an age of about 7 and 8 years respectively; but some animals were still not breeding until 20 years of age and the ages at which 50% of the female population reached puberty and maturity (Laws & Clough, 1966) were 11 and 13 years respectively. In the male, puberty begins at an average age of 6 years and maturity is reached at approximately 8 years of age. The data showed that lactation has no effect on ovarian weight or activity. The weight of the corpus luteum during pregnancy (36–72 ± 2–65 g) is significantly (P < 0–01) greater than that observed in non-pregnant animals (16–64 ± 2–46 g). Multiple ovulation occurs in 8–10% of the animals.  相似文献

Summary Paternal age distribution for 1279 cases of Down's syndrome born in 1952–1968 was compared with the corresponding distribution for the general population, corrected for the maternal age as well as for the year of birth of the patients. Although there was no difference in the mean paternal age, the two distributions differed significantly, largely due to the excess of fathers aged 55 years and over and to the deficit of those aged 40–44 years in the patients born to mothers aged 30 years and over. The overall pattern of the relative incidence of Down's syndrome with advancing paternal age, with maternal age controlled, seems consistent with the hypothesis proposed by Stene et al. (1977). It increased from 0.8 for fathers aged 20–24 years slowly up to 1.2 for those aged 45–49 years, though with an intermediate drop to 0.8 at the age of 40–44 years, and then sharply to 2.4 for those aged 55 years and over. This rising pattern of the relative incidence with paternal age was essentially the same for the patients born in 1952–1960 and for those born in 1961–1968, although the slope was less steep in the latter than in the former group. This paper is dedicated to Professor Heinrich Schade in honor of his 70th birthday  相似文献

From studies of both wild and captive animals, gibbons are thought to reach sexual maturity at about 6 to 8 years of age, and the siamang (Hylobates syndactylus) at about 8 to 9 years. However, a review of the literature reveals that in most cases the exact age of the maturing animals was not known and had to be estimated. This study presents seven case reports on captive gibbons of known age. Captive males of the white-cheeked crested gibbon (H. leucogenys leucogenys) and of the siamang (H. syndactylus) can breed at the age of 4 and 4.3 years, respectively. Similarly, hybrid females (H. lar × H. moloch) and siamang females can breed at 5.1 and 5.2 years, respectively. This finding may help to improve the breeding success of captive gibbon populations. It is not clear whether gibbons reach sexual maturity earlier in captivity or whether sexual maturity is also reached by 5 years of age in the wild. Possible implications for the interpretation of group size regulation and of reproductive strategies of wild gibbons are discussed.  相似文献

Wild animals experience different challenges and opportunities as they mature, and this variety of experiences can lead to different levels of welfare characterizing the day-to-day lives of individuals of different ages. At the same time, most wild animals who are born do not survive to adulthood. Individuals who die as juveniles do not simply experience a homogeneous fraction of the lifetimes of older members of their species; rather, their truncated lives may be characterized by very different levels of welfare. Here, I propose the concept of welfare expectancy as a framework for quantifying wild animal welfare at a population level, given individual-level data on average welfare with respect to age. This concept fits conveniently alongside methods of analysis already used in population ecology, such as demographic sensitivity analysis, and is applicable to evaluating the welfare consequences of human interventions and natural pressures that disproportionately affect individuals of different ages. In order to understand better and improve the state of wild animal welfare, more attention should be directed towards young animals and the particular challenges they face.  相似文献

From February 1972 to August 1974 ten immatureCebus albifrons monkeys were weighed and vaginal swabbing performed at monthly or shorter intervals to determine age and weight at the onset of puberty. The average weight (±S.E.M.) at birth and at puberty was 226±5.8 g and 1,617±32.45 g, respectively. The average age at puberty was 3.59±0.17 years. The average weight velocity for all ten monkeys shows the maximum rate of weight gain to occur shortly after birth and decrease rapidly to its smallest prepubertal increment at nine months of age (weaning). From nine months there is a post-weaning weight spurt which reaches its greatest velocity at an average age of 15 months. Thereafter, the weight velocity decreases to its lowest level. Individual weight velocity curves of each of the ten animals show a slight prepubertal weight spurt which is not obvious in the average growth curve.  相似文献

The neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) plays an important role in a number of behaviors inAplysia californica some of which have been shown to vary with age. We were thus interested in examining the age-dependence of 5-HT inA. californica. Because animals of the same age can have very different weights, and weight alone is reliably known for wild-caught animals, we also examined the variation of 5-HT with weight. Serotonin was measured in the ring and abdominal ganglia combined, in lab-reared animals from 3 to 12 months post-hatch across a wide weight range. Serotonin increased rapidly from 4 to 6 months, and more slowly from 6 to 13 months. Serotonin scaled by soluble ganglion protein increased from 3 to 6–7 months, reached a maximum, and then decreased again. Serotonin, but not scaled 5-HT, increased significantly with weight across the whole weight range. Animals of the same weight, but different ages, had different 5-HT levels, as did young animals of the same age but different weight. Serotonin varied significantly with both age and weight, with the age-dependence being the more significant.  相似文献

An experiment was done to determine if month of birth and age influenced patterns of luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in prepubertal heifers. Mean concentrations of LH increased linearly (P < .05) in March-born heifers between one and seven months of age. This was partially due to an increase in number of LH pulses. The prepubertal pattern of LH concentrations was quadratic (P < .05) for heifers born in September because concentrations were slightly higher (P = .15) than those in March-born heifers at one month of age. There were no differences between groups during the remainder of the prepubertal period (3 to 7 months). There was a tendency (P = .18) for September-born animals to reach puberty at younger ages than those born in March. September-born heifers also had greater (P = .06) average daily gains, but body weights at puberty were similar for the two groups. These results show that season of birth influenced LH concentrations at one month of age, but did not significantly affect the increase between three and seven months of age.  相似文献

Abstract

A campaign to eradicate goats (Capra hircus L.) was begun in August–October 1972 on Raoul Island, Kermadec group, 1000 km north-east of New Zealand. Of a total of 1286 animals killed, 155 were examined and dissected. The coat colour of 88% was pradominandy black, and of these 80% were patterned with white and/or brown. The hair was short in 85% of the goats, but a few males were shaggy all over. No throat tassels or other features of improved breeds were seen. Both sexes were fecund by 1 year of age. Conceptions occurred up to the winter solstice, but none was recorded for at least 4 months after it. Older females conceived earlier than young ones. Females more than 2 years old were 53% of all fecund females, and produced 66% of all kids born. Productivity was estimated to be 83 or 94 kids per year per 100 females of breeding age, depending on the criteria used. Eviscerated body weight, body length, shoulder height, and horn length all showed clear sexual dimorphism, and all increased with age up to 3 years. Kidney fat increased with age only in males. At the time of sampling, female fatness was not related to reproductive state. In areas which had been hunted during the past decade the population was least dense, there was a higher proportion of young animals, the growth rate up to 1 year old was greater, and adults were larger, age for age, than elsewhere on the island.  相似文献

The ring finger protein 4 gene (RNF4), which might play a role in fetal germ cell development as well as in oocyte and granulosa cell maturation, was one of the potential candidate genes for reproductive traits. In the present work, we isolated the complete coding sequence of porcine RNF4 gene, identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP: T/C) in intron5, and developed a PCR-SacII-RFLP genotyping assay. Association of this SNP with reproductive traits was assessed in three populations with diverse genetic backgrounds. One was Chinese Qingping sows. Another was consisted of crossbred sows derived from Landrace, Large White, Chinese Tongcheng and/or Chinese Meishan (Line DIV). The third is Large White × Meishan (LW × M) F2 slaughtered population. Statistical analysis demonstrated that, in the first parity, the difference between RNF4 genotypes and reproductive traits of both Qingping and Line DIV sows was not significant. In the second and subsequent litters, CC animals in Qingping population had more piglets born (+1.74 piglets) and piglets born alive (+2.02 piglets) than sows with the TT genotype (P < 0.05). Line DIV sows inheriting the CC genotype had additional 0.69 piglets born compared to the TC animals (P < 0.05) in second and subsequent litters. No significant difference was observed between genotypes and reproductive tracts components in F2 animals. In addition, we found RNF4 gene has a significant additive effect on both piglet born and piglet born alive in Qingping animals (P < 0.05). Results here suggested that the RNF4 SNP was significantly associated with litter size in two populations and could be useful in selection for increasing litter size in pigs. Further studies were needed to confirm these preliminary researches.  相似文献

Ecological theory predicts that individual survival should vary between sex and age categories due to differences in allocation of nutritional resources for growth and reproductive activities. During periods of environmental stress, such relationships may be exacerbated, and affect sex and age classes differently. We evaluated support for hypotheses about the relative roles of sex, age, and winter and summer climate on the probability of mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) survival in coastal Alaska. Specifically, we used known-fates analyses (Program MARK) to model the effects of age, sex, and climatic variation on survival using data collected from 279 radio-marked mountain goats (118 M, 161 F) in 9 separate study areas during 1977–2008. Models including age, sex, winter snowfall, and average daily summer temperature (during Jul–Aug) best explained variation in survival probability of mountain goats. Specifically, our findings revealed that old animals (9+ yr) have lower survival than younger animals. In addition, males tended to have lower survival than females, though differences only existed among prime-aged adult (5–8 yr) and old (9+ yr) age classes. Winter climate exerted the strongest effects on mountain goat survival; summer climate, however, was significant and principally influenced survival during the following winter via indirect effects. Furthermore, old animals were more sensitive to the effects of winter conditions than young or prime-aged animals. These findings detail how climate interacts with sex and age characteristics to affect mountain goat survival. Critically, we provide baseline survival rate statistics across various age, sex, and climate scenarios. These data will assist conservation and management of mountain goats by enabling detailed, model-based demographic forecasting of human and/or climate-based population impacts. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES--To assess the rate of impairment and disability among babies born very preterm and to investigate the association between such impairment and gestational age at birth. DESIGN--Cohort study of a geographically defined population of babies. SETTING--Oxford Regional Health Authority. SUBJECTS--All babies born alive before 29 weeks of gestation to mothers resident in the region during 1984-6. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Survival rates and rates of impairment and disability among survivors at the age of 4 years. RESULTS--Of the 342 babies, half (170) survived to be discharged home. Of the 164 survivors to age 4 years, 153 (93%) were assessed. A total of 35 (23%; 95% confidence interval 16% to 30%) were severely disabled and only 54 (35%; 28% to 43%) were unimpaired. The risk of impairment and disability increased with decreasing gestational age at birth (p < 0.003). CONCLUSIONS--With the increasing survival rate among babies born before 29 weeks of gestation, we need urgently to establish reliable ways of monitoring the proportion of survivors who have a disability.  相似文献

Few studies have addressed the proximate factors affecting the age at which individuals of long-lived bird species are recruited into the breeding population. We use capture-recapture analysis of resightings of 16 birth cohorts of colour-ringed great cormorants, Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis, in a Danish colony to assess the evidence for two hypotheses: conspecific attraction (earlier recruitment when the colony is large) and conspecific reproductive success (earlier recruitment following years of high breeding success). For both males and females, conspecific reproductive success was the most important covariate explaining the interannual variation in age of recruitment; colony size was also important for females. These covariates explained nearly 60% of the year-to-year variation for both sexes. The age of recruitment increased for cohorts born after 1990, and this increase was correlated with a decline in breeding success in the colony; we interpret this as an indirect and delayed density-dependent effect. Females were recruited earlier than males (mean age of recruitment for cohorts born before 1990: 2.98 years versus 3.53 years); the most plausible reason for this is a skewed sex ratio in favour of males in the adult population. Recruitment of males may thus, to some extent, be constrained by the availability of females. This study provides the first evidence that conspecific reproductive success can affect the age at which individual birds start to breed.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Field and laboratory investigations were combined in a 2‐year study on the initiation of a midsummer decline of Daphnia galeata Sars in a hypertrophic reservoir. Quantitative field samples were taken twice a week, and, adult and juvenile mortality rates were calculated. Patterns of reproduction and survival of daphnids born during spring and early summer under fluctuating food conditions were determined in life‐table experiments. 2. The abundance of Daphnia increased strongly in early May and declined in June 1998 (midsummer decline). In 1999, Daphnia density increased only slowly in spring and remained constantly high throughout the summer. 3. Food conditions (concentrations of POC<30 μm) for daphnids deteriorated in both years in response to increasing Daphnia densities, resulting in a clear‐water phase of about 4 weeks. When Daphnia abundance declined in 1998, POC<30 μm concentrations increased greatly, whereas in 1999 food conditions improved only slightly and Secchi depth remained high. 4. Survival of daphnids in life‐table experiments decreased greatly after food became rare and was strongly reduced in those animals born during the clear‐water phase compared with those born later. In addition, age at first reproduction was retarded during the clear‐water phase, resulting in very low population growth rates. Survivorship patterns in life‐table experiments suggest a strong impact of non‐consumptive mortality on Daphnia population dynamics. 5. Field data of mortality point to differences in mortality patterns between years, probably resulting from different predation impacts of juvenile fish. In both years, however, adult mortality contributed substantially to overall mortality at the end of the clear‐water phase. As bottom‐up effects on D. galeata were very similar in both years, the significance of non‐consumptive mortality on the initiation of midsummer declines appears to depend largely on recruitment patterns before the clear‐water phase. A high impact can be expected when Daphnia populations are dominated by a peak cohort of nearly identical age during the clear‐water phase.  相似文献

Studies of Nordic twins suggest an increased genetic influence on mortality with age. Contrary to this, the heterogeneity hypothesis predicts that the mortality of individuals carrying a ‘frail’ or ‘risky’ genotype in a population will approach that of noncarriers with age because of selection pressure. The ApoE ε4 allele is associated with an increased mortality risk, and its effect has been suggested to decrease with age. Here, we investigated the effect of ApoE ε4 allele on survival in a sample of the healthiest and long‐lived Danes. The study population comprised Danes born in 1905 and a replicate sample of the 1895 cohort. For the 1905 cohort, a total of 350 carriers and 1256 noncarriers of the ApoE ε4 allele were followed from 1998 until death or end of follow‐up. Cox regression models were used for the analysis. Of the 1606 persons with known ApoE ε4 status in 1998, 1546 had died at the end of the 10‐year follow‐up. Carriers of the ApoE ε4 allele had an increased mortality compared to noncarriers, and the influence of ApoE status on mortality increased in the age interval 92–103. For the covariates sex and independency status, the difference in relative risk of death between groups decreased with advancing age. Our findings of increasing influence of ApoE ε4 allele on mortality with age do not support previous findings of decreased influence ApoE ε4 allele on mortality with age, and alternative models such as the multifactorial threshold models should be considered for understanding the genetic effects on mortality at advanced age.  相似文献

Exploring age- and sex-specific survival rates provides insight regarding population behavior and life-history trait evolution. However, our understanding of how age-specific patterns of survival, including actuarial senescence, compare between the sexes remains inadequate. Using 36 years of mark-recapture data for 7,516 male Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) born in Erebus Bay, Antarctica, we estimated age-specific annual survival rates using a hierarchical model for mark-recapture data in a Bayesian framework. Our male survival estimates were moderate for pups and yearlings, highest for 2-year-olds, and gradually declined with age thereafter such that the oldest animals observed had the lowest rates of any age. Reports of senescence in other wildlife populations of species with similar longevity occurred at older ages than those presented here. When compared to recently published estimates for reproductive Weddell seal females, we found that peak survival rates were similar (males: 0.94, 95% CI = 0.92–0.96; females: 0.92, 95% CI = 0.93–0.95), but survival rates at older ages were lower in males. Age-specific male Weddell seal survival rates varied across years and individuals, with greater variation occurring across years. Similar studies on a broad range of species are needed to contextualize these results for a better understanding of the variation in senescence patterns between the sexes of the same species, but our study adds information for a marine mammal species to a research topic dominated by avian and ungulate species.  相似文献

Advanced maternal age is a well-established factor of DS occurrence. However the majority of DS cases are born to young couples. Some studies suggested that the risk for Down syndrome may be related to an aging grandmother. We obtained data on grandmaternal ages in 243 families of DS and 330 families of healthy children born in 1990-1999. The data were analyzed according to two categories of maternal ages, <30 yr and > or =30 yr. We did not find systematic differences in grandparental age distribution between the studied groups. Specifically, in 102 young couples with DS, medians for both maternal and paternal grandmother's age appeared to be equal (26 yr). Similar figures were observed in 284 young controls (27 yr). There was no difference in age distribution between 141 older couples with DS and 104 control couples. Therefore we failed to support the suggestion that advanced age of the DS grandmother is responsible for meiotic disturbance in her daughter. Neither the hypothesis suggesting a significant contribution of parentally transmitted trisomy 21 to DS population rate has been confirmed.  相似文献
