Wild Ananas species in northern South America occur in shady environments and appear to be relatively intolerant to droughts associated with growth under full sun exposure. This behaviour contrasts with the higher productivity of commercial varieties of Ananas comosus when grown under full sun exposure. Such differentiation within the genus offers an opportunity to study the process of adaptation of apparently high light avoiding species into true sun plants. As a first approximation, the analysis of nitrogen content and carbon and hydrogen isotope ratios of bromeliads growing under natural conditions was undertaken to test the following hypotheses: 1. Leaf nitrogen content of plants grown under partial shade is higher than that of the same species in the same habitat growing under full sun exposure, due to the higher availability to nitrogen in the under-canopy, but also to the lower proportion of structural carbohydrates in shade leaves; 2. δ13C values are usually more negative in CAM bromeliads growing under partial shade because of the lower contribution of CAM to total carbon gain, and the probable fixation of CO2 originating from soil respiration; 3. δD values of CAM bromeliads are less negative than those of C3 bromeliads, but CAM bromeliads grown in shady habitats tend to have more negative δD values because of the lower relative accumulation of deuterium in leaf tissue water, and also because of their relatively lower CAM activity. The results show a clear differentiation between CAM and C3 bromeliads based on δ13C values, and in general δD values are less negative in CAM bromeliads. However, in several species overlapping δD values between C3 and CAM bromeliads were observed. The analysis of paired samples of the same species grown under contrasting light intensity usually conformed with the expectations. A number of deviations from the hypotheses were observed which appeared to be related to particular environmental conditions. The interpretation of δD values obtained from total organic matter is made difficult by the local variation of hydrogen/deuterium ratios in water available to the plant.  相似文献

The mycorrhizal status of epiphytic, rupicolous, and terrestrial bromeliad species from the Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest has been examined. Roots of 13 species of bromeliads were analyzed for the presence of mycorrhizal structures such as arbuscules, hyphae, and vesicles as well as other fungal structures. Rhizosphere soil was sampled to identify arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) species associated only with terrestrial bromeliad species. Most specimens collected were epiphytic bromeliads in the genera Aechmea, Bilbergia, Nidularium, Tillandsia, and Vriesea. Differentiating structures of AMF were found in only three species of bromeliads. The pattern of mycorrhizal colonization was mainly internal, and external mycelium and arbuscules were observed only in the terrestrial Nidularium procerum. Root endophytes with dark brown septate mycelium, thin external hyphae, and Rhizoctonia-like sclerotia were also detected in some root segments. A total of ten spore morphotypes were recovered from the rhizosphere of N. procerum, with Acaulospora mellea, A. foveata, and Glomus sp. being the most common species recovered. Our study demonstrated that most of the epiphytic species are not associated with AMF. We attribute this mainly to the exposed bare root conditions found in epiphytic bromeliads.  相似文献

Abstract An investigation was carried out into the water relations of CAM and C3 bromeliads in their natural habitat during the dry season in Trinidad. Measurements were made of xylem tension with the pressure chamber and of cell-sap osmotic pressure and titratable acidity on crushed leaf samples. A steady-state CO2 and H2O-vapour porometer was also used so that changes in leaf water relations during individual day-night cycles could be directly related to gas-exchange patterns in situ. Xylem tension changed in parallel with transpiration rate and in general reached its maximum value in CAM bromeliads at night and in C3 bromeliads during the day. In addition, large nocturnal increases in cell-sap osmotic pressure and titratable acidity (ΔH+) typically occurred in the CAM bromeliads. The C3-CAM intermediate Guzmania monostachia showed slight nocturnal acidification, but had higher values of xylem tension during the day. Very high values of AH+ were observed in the CAM species when the tanks of the epiphytic bromeliads contained water: Aechmea nudicaulis showed a mean maximum ΔH+ of 474 mol m?3, the highest value so far observed for CAM plants. On some nights dew formed on the leaf surfaces of the epiphytes, partially curtailing gas exchange and leading to a marked decrease in xylem tension in both C3 and CAM species. Between-site comparisons were also made for a wide range of habitats from arid coastal scrub to montane rain forest. Compared with values characteristic of other life-forms, xylem tension and cell-sap osmotic pressure were low for all bromeliads, and did not differ significantly in co-occurring CAM and C3 bromeliads. Mean maximum xylem tension (10 species in total) ranged from 0.29 M Pa at the montane sites to 0.67 MPa at the most arid site, and mean minimum osmotic pressure (17 species) from 0.51 to 0.97 MPa. At the arid sites the bromeliads were exclusively CAM species, two of which (Aechmea aquilega and Bromelia plumieri) grew terrestrially in the undergrowth of the coastal scrub. Xylem tension in these species was low enough to indicate that they must be functionally independent of the substratum during the dry season. In the wetter part of Trinidad, no between-site differences in leaf water relations were found along an altitudinal gradient in the Northern Mountain Range; seasonal differences in this area were also small. Overall, leaf water relations and gas exchange in the bromeliads were strongly affected both by short-term changes in water availability and by longer-term climatic differences in the various regions of the island.  相似文献

Summary A study was made of the bulk-leaf water relations of selected species of epiphytic bromeliads growing in their natural habitat in Trinidad (West Indies). Field measurements were made during the rainy season at three forest sites centred on the wetter part of the island. The epiphytic bromeliads were sampled in situ using modified rock-climbing techniques at 4- to 6-h intervals during complete day-nigh cycles. Eleven species were studied that differed in their photosynthetic pathways and habitat preferences. The C3 species among the epiphytic bromeliads characteristically showed maximum values of xylem tension (measured with the pressure chamber) during the day, whereas the species with crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) attained maximum values towards the end of the night. In addition, the CAM species showed large nocturnal increases in leaf-cell-sap osmotic pressure and titratable acidity. These nocturnal increases showed mean values of 0.601 MPa and 289 mol H+ m-3, respectively, for four species sampled at an exposed forest clearing (250 m), where CAM species were well represented. At the other two sites, a lowland forest (60 m) and a ridge forest (740 m), CAM bromeliads were found in the forest canopy, but in the lowest strata all the bromeliads were C3 species. This species distribution was associated with a marked vertical stratification of microlimate, the forest canopy being characterized by much bigger day-night changes in temperature and water-vapour-pressure deficit than the undergrowth. The C3-CAM intermediateGuzmania monostachia var.monostachia showed significant nocturnal acidification in the forest clearing but not in the understory of the lowland forest.Taken as a whole, the C3 and CAM bromeliads were very similar in the range of values observed for xylem tension and osmotic pressure, as well as in aspects of their leaf anatomy. However, epidermal trichomes covered a large percentage of the leaf surface area in xeromorphic species (e.g.Tillandsia utriculata), whereas they were poorly developed in shade-tolerant species (e.g.G. lingulata var.lingulata). The absolute values of sylem tension and osmotic pressure were low for all species. Mean minimum xylem tension during the day-night cycles was in the range of 0.18–0.23 MPa and mean maximum in the range 0.41–0.53 MPa; during periods of rain, xylem tension reached a mean minimum of 0.12 MPa. Mean minimum osmotic pressure was in the range 0.449–0.523 MPa. Such between-site and between-species differences as were observed in the water relations of the bromeliads could be related to the microclimatic conditions prevailing in the various epiphytic habitats.Abbreviations CAM crassulacean acid metabolism - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density  相似文献

Many members of the family Bromeliacae are able to adopt epiphytic lifestyles and colonize trees throughout the Neotropics. Bromeliacae do not extract nutrients from their hosts and confer relatively minor costs on their host plants. We suggest that bromeliads, however, may benefit their hosts by providing habitat for predators of host plant herbivores. We report a correlation between bromeliad presence and a reduction in herbivore damage in orange trees, an effect that is increased when bromeliads are colonized by ants. Our results may have important implications for agricultural systems in the Neotropics, where bromeliads are often removed in the belief they are parasitic. We instead demonstrate that bromeliads may impart a benefit to their hosts, and speculate that under particular circumstances they may be part of a three‐species mutualism.  相似文献

Among vertebrates, anuran amphibians represent the highest number of species associated with bromeliads and possess a range of ecological, behavioral, and morphological specializations to life in these plants. Despite the importance of bromeliads as biodiversity amplifiers, and their diversity in some habitats, studies of the relationship between anurans and these plants are scarce in Brazil. Here, we investigated the way anurans select and use bromeliads in a threatened coastal habitat. We analyzed data from 23 standardized samples of the anurans associated with the bromeliad Neoregelia cruenta in the Restinga de Maricá, State of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil. We found nine anuran species using these bromeliads, representing the highest richness reported for a Brazilian restinga. We identified a general pattern of bromeliad usage, where plants located at the edges of scrub patches (exposed to the sun) were more frequently occupied by anurans than those located more to the center (in the shade). There is strong evidence of an active selective process based on the quality of the water stored in the rosette, which differs between plants depending on their position in the scrub patch. Although the number of individuals varied during the period of study, the frequency of bromeliads used was constant, indicating that plant occupation follows a regular pattern throughout the year. Furthermore, the high frequency of bromeliads used by anurans during the whole year highlights the importance of considering these plants in developing conservation programs concerning the protection of anurans.  相似文献

Bourguyia hamata females oviposit almost exclusively inside the rosette formed by the curled leaves of the epiphytic bromeliad Aechmea nudicaulis. We investigated whether the architecture of the individual bromeliads influences oviposition site selection by this harvestman species. We collected data on the presence of clutches inside bromeliads, rosette length, rosette slope in relation to tree trunks, and the amount of debris inside the rosette. Additionally, we measured the water volume inside the rosettes as well as the variation in the humidity inside and outside bromeliads with long and short rosettes. Longer rosettes were preferred as oviposition site possibly because they accumulate more water and maintain lower internal humidity variation than the external environment. Although the slope of the rosettes did not influence the occurrence of oviposition, the probability of debris accumulation inside the rosettes increased with their slope, and the frequency of clutches was greater in bromeliads with small amounts of debris. A field experiment showed that bromeliads with water inside the rosette were more frequently used as oviposition sites than bromeliads without water. In conclusion, females oviposit predominantly in bromeliads that accumulate more water and have small amounts of debris inside the rosettes, probably because these characteristics promote a more adequate microhabitat for egg development.  相似文献

Many species of bromeliads create an aquatic microcosm among their leaves. Besides their native aquatic fauna, these microcosms can be used by larvae of invasive mosquitoes like Aedes aegypti. We compared the mortality among A. aegypti larvae placed inside tanks of Aechmea fasciata bromeliads with larvae placed inside artificial microcosms and with microcosms with low pH (5.4), which simulate the acidic conditions found inside bromeliad tanks. A. aegypti larvae suffered a significantly higher mortality inside bromeliad tanks compared to larvae in control microcosms, but the mortality inside bromeliads did not differ statistically from that found in artificial microcosms simulating bromeliad acidic conditions. We concluded that bromeliad tanks tend to be a less suitable environment for the development of A. aegypti larvae than artificial containers due to the acidification generated by bromeliad physiology.  相似文献

We studied bromeliad selection by calling males of Phyllodytes melanomystax. The study site was a restinga environment in the northeastern state of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. We sampled 202 bromeliads, 101 with and 101 without calling males. We used multiple logistic regression analysis and Wald test to identify which of nine environmental variables investigated could explain the occurrence of calling males within bromeliads. The presence/absence of calling males in bromeliads was influenced by the number of bromeliads in a 2 m radius and the amount of debris inside the rosettes, while physical variables of bromeliads and the volume of stored water inside their rosettes had no influence. The mark-recapture procedure of P. melanomystax revealed site fidelity. This study is the first to explain the pattern of bromeliad selection by a species of the bromeliad-dwelling frog genus Phyllodytes.  相似文献

Abstract: While atmospheric species of bromeliads have narrow leaves, densely covered with water‐absorbing trichomes throughout their life cycles, many tank bromeliads with broad leaves, forming phytotelmata, go through an atmospheric juvenile phase. The effect of the different habits and the phase change in tank‐forming bromeliads on water and nutrient relations was investigated by analysing the relationship between plant size, C/N ratios and the natural abundance of 13C and 15N in five epiphytic bromeliad species or morphospecies of a humid montane forest in Xalapa, Mexico. The atmospheric species Tillandsia juncea and T. butzii exhibited full crassulacean acid metabolism, with δ13C values (mean ‐ 15.3 ‰ and ‐ 14.7 ‰, respectively) independent of size. In Tillandsia species with C3 photosynthesis, δ13C decreased with increasing plant size, indicating stronger drought stress in juveniles. The increase of the C/N ratio with size suggests that, at least in heteroblastic bromeliads, the availability of water is more limiting during early growth, and that limitations of nitrogen supply become more important later on, when water stored in the tank helps to bridge dry periods, reducing water shortage. δ15N values of the two atmospheric species were very negative (‐ 12.6 ‰ and ‐ 12.2 ‰, respectively) and did not change with plant size. Tank‐forming bromeliads had less negative δ15N values (c ‐ 6 ‰), and, in species with atmospheric juveniles and tank‐forming adults, δ15N values increased significantly with plant size. These differences do not appear to be an effect of the isotopic composition of N sources, but rather reflect N availability and limitation and stress‐induced changes in 15N discrimination.  相似文献

Epiphytes represent up to 50% of all vascular plant species in neotropical forests but they are among the slowest plants to recolonize regenerating ecosystems. This discrepancy underlines the need for restoration ecologists to learn how to assist the colonization of organisms in this key functional group. Transplanting tank bromeliads (i.e. bromeliads featuring overlapping leaves that form a water impounding rosette) could be a good approach in the neotropics, where abundant, fallen bromeliads can be sustainably collected from the forest floor. Moreover, tank bromeliads could accelerate restoration processes by providing relatively stable microenvironments for invertebrates, thus helping them resist severe drought and high temperatures, such as predicted in light of many climate change models. We transplanted 60 individuals of the tank bromeliad Werauhia gladioliflora onto trunks and branches of comparable size and orientation on three host tree species. The study took place in three long‐term restoration plantations located in a tropical premontane rainforest zone in southern Costa Rica. Transplant survivorship after 9 months varied among sites, from 65 to 95%. Transplants hosted twice as many arthropod orders as untreated control branches, and they buffered microclimates during the driest (+1.7 to 19.7% relative humidity) and warmest (?0.5 to 5.0°C) times of the day. Longer‐term studies are needed to test this strategy for other epiphyte families or for mixed‐taxa assemblages found on fallen branches.  相似文献

Queen number varies in the population of O. hastatus in SE Brazil. Here, we evaluate how nesting ecology and colony structure are associated in this species, and investigate how reproduction is shared among nestmate queens. Queen number per colony is positively correlated with nesting space (root cluster of epiphytic bromeliads), and larger nest sites host larger ant colonies. Plant samplings revealed that suitable nest sites are limited and that nesting space at ant-occupied bromeliads differs in size and height from the general bromeliad community. Dissections revealed that queens in polygynous colonies are inseminated, have developed ovaries, and produce eggs. Behavioral observations showed that reproduction in polygynous colonies is mediated by queen–queen agonistic interactions that include egg cannibalism. Dominant queens usually produced more eggs. Field observations indicate that colonies can be initiated through haplometrosis. Polygyny in O. hastatus may result either from groups of cofounding queens (pleometrosis) or from adoption of newly mated queens by established colonies (secondary polygyny). Clumping of bromeliads increases nest space and probably adds stability through a strong root system, which may promote microhabitat selection by queens and favor pleometrosis. Rainstorms that frequently knock down bromeliads can be a source of colony break-up and may promote polygyny. Bromeliads are limited nest sites and may represent a risk for young queens leaving a suitable nest, thus favoring secondary polygyny. Although proximate mechanisms mediating queen number are poorly understood, this study suggests that heterogeneous microhabitat conditions probably contribute to the coexistence of variable forms of social structure in O. hastatus.  相似文献

This paper documents the existence of carabid assemblages associated with bromeliads on the Cofre de Perote, Veracruz, Mexico. Based on bromeliads sampled over three altitudinal ranges, the assemblages included at least 26 species with an arboreal lifestyle and another 11 species that are not strictly arboreal. Seven species are new to science, urging us to pay attention to the arboreal fauna in forest conservation studies. Composition of carabid assemblages associated with bromeliads changes with altitude. In lowlands, it is comprised almost entirely of species of Lebiini, with the Platynini dominating assemblages found in bromeliads >1,000 m above sea level. Our data suggest that carabids use bromeliads to reduce stresses associated with drought periods, the exact timing of which depends on altitude. The unexpected low diversity of the carabid fauna associated with bromeliads at middle altitude is explained in terms of anthropogenic conversion of the original forest to pastureland. Given the importance of arboreal elements, further fragmentation of subtropical and tropical mountain forest significantly threatens overall carabid diversity.  相似文献

A new species of Neotropical Psychodidae, Alepia apexalba sp. nov., is described from dry-forest tank bromeliads in Saba, Netherlands Antilles. Larvae, pupae and adults are described and figured. It is possible to relate larvae and adults because the latter were reared from pupae collected from the bromeliads (Tillandsia utriculata) that also contained larvae. Bromeliads are adapted to intercept canopy litter and throughfall water, and decaying litter is washed into and retained by the leaf bases. It is from this aquatic habitat that the larvae and pupae were collected.  相似文献

Poorly known species may be cryptically endangered, especially when they inhabit fragmented and threatened habitats. Heart‐tongued frogs (genus Phyllodytes, family Hylidae, Lophyohylinae) comprise 17 species of poorly known frogs that have obligatory associations with tank bromeliads. The distributions of all species are restricted to a small, extremely fragmented, region of Atlantic Forest in eastern Brazil. We model climate and tank bromeliad distributions to better understand frog distribution limits. Using records from several sources for frogs and bromeliads with climate data from WorldClim, we modelled the distribution of Phyllodytes using maximum entropy. We compared climate and altitude within the distribution and nearby to test how climate may limit distribution. Climate together with bromeliad distributions provided the best model and predicted the smallest suitable area for Phyllodytes that was larger than that occupied, from the state of Paraíba in the north to Rio Grande do Sul in the south. Phyllodytes occurs in lower elevations that are warmer, wetter and less variable than the surrounding regions where it does not occur, and dispersal is apparently limited by the surrounding, inhospitable, region. Dispersal limitation and habitat fragmentation have relegated Phyllodytes to many very small habitat fragments. With many species in this genus being known from a single or few samples, this unfortunate combination of limitation and fragmentation suggests that some or all species of Phyllodytes may be threatened with extinction, especially if habitat fragmentation continues at its present pace in eastern Brazil.  相似文献

Shade coffee plantations can be important refuges for epiphytes, but are not suitable for all species. To test if the performance of early life stages, often the most sensitive phase, is responsible for the species’ ability to colonize coffee plantations, we compared growth and mortality rates of three epiphytic bromeliad species that differ in their ability to colonize secondary arboreal vegetation by transplanting juveniles to trees in forests, and shade trees in old and young coffee plantations in Central Veracruz, Mexico. Growth rates of Tillandsia viridiflora, generally restricted to forests, and Tillandsia juncea, an early colonizer, were related to the pattern of the species occurrence among habitats with growth rates of T. viridiflora being generally higher in forests and growth of T. juncea higher in coffee plantations. Performance of the third species, Tillandsia heterophylla, which is intermediate in habitat preference, was not clearly related to habitat. No difference in growth rates was found between plants transplanted in wet or dry season. In general, mortality in transplanted bromeliads was relatively low (mostly < 5% per month). In coffee plantations herbivory had a severe effect during part of the wet season, when mortality in young coffee plantations reached between 15 and 24 percent per month. Given the substantial contribution of herbivory to the mortality of juvenile plants and the significant differences between habitats, herbivory may be co‐limiting the colonization of young coffee plantations by some epiphytic bromeliads.  相似文献

The mycorrhizal status of water-impounding tank bromeliad epiphytes from three locales differing in altitude and moisture regime within Venezuelan cloud forest was examined. Species of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi found in arboreal soils were compared to VAM fungi found in terrestrial soils. Sixteen of the 19 epiphytes examined for the presence of VAM fungi had roots with infection stages; 14 of these specimens showed growth of the fine endophyte Glomus tenue. Fine endophyte was the only VAM fungus found associated with epiphytes in the driest locale studied, while coarse VAM fungi (Gigaspora and Scutellospora spp.) were found at sampling locales receiving more moisture. Root infection was usually composed of intercellular hyphae and peletons; few arbuscules were observed. However, abundant extracellular hyphae were often observed tangled about roots in arboreal soil. It is concluded that epiphytic bromeliads probably benefit, at least periodically, from VAM fungi scavenging for sporadically available nutrients in arboreal soils. Glomus tenue may be particularly important as a colonizing VAM fungus in drier sites of Venezuelan cloud forest. The species composition of VAM fungi in arboreal soils was different to that of terrestrial soils sampled directly under epiphytic bromeliad perches, suggesting that VAM fungi species associated with bromeliads are dispersed to their hosts by vagile animal vectors.  相似文献

Many plant species have evolved special adaptations for acquiring nitrogen in nutrient‐poor soils. In Brazilian savannas, the bromeliad Bromelia balansae (Bromeliaceae) is inhabited by mutualistic spiders (Psecas chapoda, Salticidae), which provide nutrients to the plant through their debris (feces, prey carcasses). In this study, we tested if bacteria present on the B. balansae phyllosphere improves plant nutrition and growth by mineralizing complex organic N compounds from spider debris that accumulate on the phyllosphere into simple compounds that may be absorbed easily by leaves. We conducted a greenhouse experiment by manipulating bacteria abundance on the bromeliad phyllosphere using antibiotics. Using isotopic mixed model equations, we demonstrated that debris from spiders contributed 10.7 ± 1.9 percent (mean ± standard error) of the N in bromeliads that had their bacterial abundance reduced. In contrast, spider feces contributed 27.1 ± 4.4 percent of bromeliad N in the presence of the entire bacterial assemblage. These bromeliads accumulated 57 percent more soluble protein and grew 13 percent more than bromeliads that were grown under reduced bacterial density. These results highlight the importance of mineralizing bacteria on phyllosphere as a mechanism of N uptake by bromeliads.  相似文献

Tank bromeliads harbour aquatic microcosms with many endemic species among their leaves. We performed a set of experiments to determine which factors maintain the bromeliad aquatic fauna in isolation from neighbouring ponds. We cultivated three invertebrates species (an ostracod, an annelid and a cladoceran) from a pond surrounded by terrestrial bromeliads in Southeastern Brazil and introduced them inside cleaned bromeliads, using recipients with the same volume as controls. The pH, conductivity and organism densities were monitored in the bromeliad samples and controls for 41 days. The samples introduced inside the cleaned bromeliads showed a significant decrease in pH and conductivity compared to the controls. The pond organism populations introduced in the bromeliads presented a high extinction rate and a significant population decrease when compared to the ones introduced in the controls. We attributed the population decline experienced by the pond organisms to the oligotrophic conditions generated inside the tanks by the bromeliads due to the nutrient absorption. We suggest that the changes in water chemistry induced by the bromeliads could play an important role in isolating their microcosm communities from other freshwater systems. Other mechanisms that could produce the high rates of endemism in bromeliad fauna are discussed. Handling editor: K. Martens  相似文献
