We analysed the diet composition of 133 specimens of the Worm Lizard, Diplometopon zarudnyi, in Riyadh province, Saudi Arabia. Analysis of stomach contents revealed that 90 specimens (66.6%) had prey items in their gut. The stomach content consisted mainly of small invertebrate prey (beetles), mainly larvae of Dermestes sp., but also imagines of Dermestes maculatus and Rhynchophorus ferrugineus. Dermestes sp. constitutes over 99% of the total food items, showing a high selectivity in food intake. The high number of beetles in the stomach contents indicates that this lizard forages very frequently. Specimens collected during winter had empty stomachs. The high proportion of fossorial prey items and the occasional records of other stomach contents show that D. zarudnyi only occasionally forages on the surface.  相似文献

The diet and partitioning of food resources among mid-sized mammalian carnivores is poorly known, especially in the tropics. We evaluated the resource partitioning between Leopardus pardalis (ocelot), Cerdocyon thous (crab-eating fox), and Nasua nasua (brown-nosed coati) in the Pantanal of Brazil. Between December 2005 and February 2008, we collected data necessary to better understand interspecific, intraspecific, and seasonal variability in diet. Food habits were assessed by analysis of feces (n?=?293) collected from known individuals (n?=?128), and differences in dietary composition were evaluated through nonmetric dimensional scaling using the Jaccard similarity index. The main diet differences were observed between the specialist ocelot and the more generalist crab-eating fox and brown-nosed coati. Crab-eating foxes and brown-nosed coatis preyed on arthropods, fruits, and vertebrates whereas ocelots preyed almost entirely on vertebrates, mainly rodents and snakes. Ocelots’ consumption of snakes was the highest ever recorded, as was the extent of carnivory by brown-nosed coatis. For the crab-eating fox and the brown-nosed coati, there were large differences between the use of fruits and animal foods in the wet and dry season. Yet for both species there were no significant differences in the diets of males and females. Despite the conspicuous sexual dimorphism and spatial segregation that are typical of brown-nosed coatis, the results do not support the hypothesis that size dimorphism is primarily an adaptation to reduce intersexual competition for food. Rather, dimorphisms and patterns of space use may be more related to competition among males for access to females.

The feeding habits of sand smelt (Atherina boyeri, Risso, 1810) from Trichonis Lake (Western Greece) were investigated. Stomach contents were analyzed from 240 specimens with total lengths ranging from 35 to 112 mm. Samples were taken at monthly intervals (January–December 1997). Of the total number of stomachs examined, 53 were empty (22.1%). However, values varied greatly with season (maximum in January: 50%; minimum in August: 7.6%). Prey analyses of stomach contents identified 15 important items (%Rn > 0.05) belonging to six major groups: crustacean (copepods, cladocera), mollusca (bivalve: larvae), insects (larvae), cestode worms and finfish (fry and eggs). Dominant prey were larvae of the bivalve Dreissena polymorpha (%Rn = 33.8), the copepods Eudiadomus drieschi (%Rn = 26.4) and the cladocera Diaphanosoma brachyurum (%Rn = 24.2). The importance of cladocera and copepods decreased with increasing size of the sand smelt, while the importance of bivalve larvae, fish eggs and finfish fry increased with increasing sand smelt size. Seasonal changes in diet composition and prey abundance in sand smelt stomachs were recorded as coinciding with the seasonal composition and abundance of the zooplankton community in the surface layers of Trichonis Lake. Bivalve larvae were the dominant prey of A. boyeri during January to May, while copepods and cladocera dominated from June to December.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of the exotic invasive black bullhead Ameiurus melas was conducted in the Iberian Peninsula for the first time. Dietary analysis based on the stomach contents of individuals caught in several Iberian basins was carried out as a first step to evaluate its potential threat for the native Iberian ichthyofauna. Aquatic macroinvertebrates (mainly Chironomidae) dominated the black bullhead's diet in all size-classes and sites, irrespective of natural riverine or artificial lentic habitats. Secondary prey items were responsible for the observed between-sites (microcrustaceans in artificial lentic habitat; oligochaeta and caddisfly larvae in natural riverine habitats) and ontogenetic diet differences (from microcrustaceans to larger prey). These diet variations were also detected in trophic diversity values and feeding strategy plots. Black bullheads consumed plant material, terrestrial prey and co-occurring fish species (native or exotic) and thus they could be considered as generalist or opportunistic, foraging on the most abundant and available prey. There was no positive relationship between black bullhead size (total length) and fish prey size, probably indicating piscivory on dead or dying vulnerable fishes as well as predation on smaller-sized active fishes. The results showed that the black bullhead could negatively affect native Iberian ichthyofauna throughout direct predation and competition. Aspects of potential conservation and management implications of fishes resulting from the undesirable presence of the black bullhead in Iberian water bodies are discussed.  相似文献

DNA metabarcoding analysis for gut contents has been shown to compensate the disadvantage of traditionally morphological identification and offer higher resolution of prey items in an efficient way. Holland's carp (Spinibarbus hollandi) is a freshwater fish native to southern and eastern Taiwan. In the past two decades, this species has been introduced as a sport fish into the river basins of northern and western Taiwan. The large body size and active predation make it a potential threat for native fishes, but which native species are preyed by Holland's carp remains unknown. In this study, the diet from the gut contents of Holland's carp from the Zhonggang River, an invaded basin, was examined using DNA metabarcoding from 51 individuals and by morphological examinations on 140 samples. Detritus of plants were found in 83.6% samples (117 individuals). Twenty fish species of seven families were identified by DNA metabarcoding, including species of all water layers. Taiwan torrent carp (Acrossocheilus paradoxus) and Rhinogobius spp. are the most common prey items. Based on the results of this study, Holland's carp is considered an opportunistic omnivore because of its diverse diet items, which is an important trait for successful invasive fish species. The population decline of Opsariichthys pachycephalus may not result from the invasion of Holland's carps. Nonetheless, the time lag between successful invasion and the samplings of this study may be a concern because the population size of O. pachycephalus may have declined and become difficult to prey. The Holland's carps consumed the least species in winter; nonetheless, the occurrence frequencies of preys among seasons were not significantly different probably because of limited temperature fluctuation. The smallest Holland's carps consumed the least prey species compared to other size categories, similar to the relationship of prey species number to size of invasive largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).  相似文献

We studied the gut contents of 17 White-headed Ducks, 25 North American Ruddy Ducks and 26 hybrids between the two species collected from 14 Spanish wetlands. This is the most detailed study to date of Oxyura diet in the Palearctic region. Food items from at least 27 families of invertebrates and at least ten families of aquatic plants were identified. The method of collection of ducks and rapid digestion of soft-bodied invertebrates may have overestimated the importance of plant matter. However, animal foods were more important, constituting 73% of aggregate volume of gullet contents. In both duck species and their hybrids, benthic chironomid larvae and pupae were the most important food item, present in 69% of gullets and 75% of gizzards, and constituting 35% of aggregate volume and 26% of aggregate percentage in gullets. Angiosperm seeds were the next most important dietary component, and crustaceans (mainly Amphipoda, Cladocera and Isopoda) and green plant material were of secondary importance. No significant differences in diet were detected between duck species, sex or age classes. Birds sampled in the breeding season had more nematodes, but these may have been parasitic. Chironomids were less abundant in Ruddy Ducks collected from northern Spain outside of the range of the White-headed Duck.  相似文献

Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) are listed as one of the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world. They are generalist predators and thus may affect native species through predation. In previous studies, the food contents of bullfrogs were mostly examined at a single site. In the present study, the diet composition of post-metamorphic bullfrogs on eight islands (Daishan, Liuheng, Xiushan, Fodu, Taohua, Xiashi, Cezi, and Putuoshan) in the Zhoushan Archipelago, Zhejiang Province of China, were examined by using the stomach flushing method from June 30 to August 11 in 2005. A total of 391 individual frogs were measured, including 113 adults and 278 juveniles. The analysis of the stomach contents shows that, for adult bullfrogs, the most important prey (by diet volume) overall were Decapoda, Coleoptera, Odonata, Mesogastropoda, Raniformes, and Cypriniformes. For juvenile bullfrogs, these were Decapoda, Coleoptera, Cypriniformes, Odonata, Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera larvae, Mesogastropoda, and Raniformes. Moreover, the prey size and diet volume increased with the body size of both adult and juvenile bullfrogs. The diet composition of primary preys of bullfrogs was significantly different among the islands. The results indicate that bullfrogs exert different predatory influences on native fauna at different sites and that bullfrogs are generalist predators with extensive ecological impacts on native fauna. __________ Translated from Biodiversity Science, 2006, 14 (5): 363–371 [译自: 生 物多样性]  相似文献

Red fox Vulpes vulpes predation on roe deer Capreolus capreolus fawns has the potential to strongly affect prey population dynamics, but it is unclear whether this relationship is symmetrical or not. We analysed the spring–summer diet of adult foxes and of their cubs in a fragmented agricultural area of southeastern Norway, where a parallel study showed that the predator kills annually 25% of the radio-monitored roe deer fawns. The overall diet was highly varied and was dominated by small mammals (33% volume), especially Microtus agrestis, and medium-large mammals (25%), largely represented by fawns. The frequency of occurrence (FO) of fawns in the diet of adult foxes was highest in early spring, thus, supporting previous studies showing that the predator started actively hunting for fawns from the very beginning of the birth season. During the summer, the FO of both fawns and small mammals markedly declined, while that of berries and invertebrates increased. As expected for central-place foragers, cubs consumed a higher proportion of large prey items compared to adults. In particular, 25% of scats from cubs—versus 9% from adults—contained roe deer remains, suggesting a high profitability of fawns for vixens raising offspring. However, considering the wide food spectrum and the availability of several large prey items in our study area, it seems unlikely that the importance of fawns to the diet and population dynamics of red foxes could be as great as the impact of the predator on roe deer populations. This asymmetrical relationship implies that there are unlikely to be any stabilising feedback mechanisms in the predator–prey relationship.  相似文献

The diet and growth of sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus, in an oligotrophic system (Kat River Reservoir, Eastern Cape, South Africa) were compared to those in a eutrophic system (Laing Reservoir, Eastern Cape) to determine if the trophic status of a waterbody had an effect on the growth rate of the species. In order of importance, the diet of catfish in Kat River Reservoir consisted of fish, insects, zooplankton, plant material and other items, while the diet of catfish in Laing Reservoir consisted of fish, plant material, zooplankton, other vertebrates and insects. The diets of catfish in the two reservoirs had a similarity index of 68.1% and there was no significant difference in their nutritional value. Fish prey was the most important dietary component in both reservoirs. Temperature regime and zooplankton and zoobenthos density were similar in both systems. However, fish prey density was significantly higher in the eutrophic Laing Reservoir and catfish grew significantly faster in that system. The slower growth rate in Kat River Reservoir was attributed to the higher energy costs associated with the capture of fish prey, which was less abundant than in Laing Reservoir. Trophic status therefore had an indirect effect on catfish growth by influencing the availability of fish prey.  相似文献

The Amur sleeper diet spectrum was investigated in addition to its spatial, seasonal and size-related changes, in order to predict which groups of native prey would be most affected by this exotic predator that has rapidly invaded many Eastern and Central European inland waters in recent decades. In total, 527 Perccottus glenii individuals were collected in four sites in the Włocławski Reservoir (the Vistula River, Baltic basin, Poland). Altogether 50 food categories were identified, including crustaceans, insects, molluscs, annelids, araneids, fishes and amphibians. Most of them were associated with aquatic vegetation, indicating that the Amur sleeper collects its prey from the submerged plants rather than directly from the bottom sediments. Amphipods and chironomid larvae, supplemented by zygopteran larvae and molluscs, composed the main forage base in all studied sites, although their importance was varied. The diet composition differed among P. glenii size-groups. Significant variation was found in numeric abundance of amphipods, chironomid larvae, fish and zygopteran larvae (Kruskal–Wallis P < 0.01). Seasonal changes in the diet were also observed whereby in spring and summer, dipteran larvae and amphipods were prevalent food items; the importance of molluscs and zygopteran larvae increased considerably in September; and fish showed the highest occurrence in June, July and August. The broad diet spectrum of the Amur sleeper indicates that it is a non-selective, opportunistic predator and that several taxonomic groups of native hydrofauna as well as macroinvetebrates and fish may be affected by its presence. The highly flexible feeding strategy undoubtedly favours Amur sleeper expansion in invaded watersheds.  相似文献

Extant procyonids only inhabit the Americas and are represented by six genera (Procyon, Nasua, Nasuella, Bassaricyon, Potos, and Bassariscus); all of them, except Bassariscus, are present in South America. The first records correspond to the early Miocene in North America (NA) and the late Miocene in South America (SA). Cyonasua was the first carnivoran to enter SA from NA, before the Great American Biotic Interchange, and went extinct in the early middle Pleistocene. This extinct procyonid is recorded in several localities of Argentina, and also in Venezuela. Paleobiological studies of procyonids are interesting from evolutionary and biogeographical viewpoints. In this study, the pectoral girdle and forelimb of 10 specimens of Cyonasua are described and compared with extant South American procyonids using a qualitative approach. Additionally, four functional morphology indexes were calculated for them and compared with an ecologically diverse sample of living carnivorans. Results indicate that Cyonasua most resembles Nasua nasua and Procyon cancrivorus, even though the extinct procyonid possessed peculiar features. Cyonasua had robust and relatively short forelimb bones, with strong stabilized joints, and movements associated with the sagittal plane, which suggest a tendency toward terrestrial habits, related to their ability to resist relatively high bending and shearing stresses. However, some features indicate a freedom in their range of movements, with moderate supination ability, compatible with climbing. When combined with previous analyses of dietary habits and estimated body mass, the morphology of Cyonasua would be well suited for digging and prey manipulation, allowing them to prey on small and relatively large-sized vertebrates, as well as to avoid some of the predators that were dominant in the Cenozoic of South America.  相似文献

The composition of the diet of the Indo-Pacific cornetfish Fistularia commersonii from the SE Aegean Sea is described. The stomach contents of 245 specimens collected between September 2004 and March 2005 were examined. Dietary comparisons were made reflecting the relationship between diet composition, time of year, and fish size. Correlation between predator length and prey length was significant. The diet of the blue cornetfish consists of 96% by number and 99.95% by weight of fish. Size classification and habitat of prey groups (benthic, supra-benthic, and pelagic) showed that with increased body length the blue cornetfish extended its diet to larger prey and more generalist feeding. Spicara smaris, Boops boops, and Mullidae spp. were the most abundant prey by weight whereas a variety of small benthic fish (especially gobiids) and newly hatched fish constituted the largest number of prey items. Length–weight relationships for the cornetfish were investigated.  相似文献

Leptodactylus ocellatus (LO) and L. labyrinthicus (LL) are known to prey on other frogs. Here we compare their food habits based on the analysis of stomach contents and their spatial distribution when in sympatry. LO was found most frequently near stream banks, and LL on the margins of lakes and ponds. LO was found within 10 m of permanent water bodies; LL frequently used ponds far from lakes and rivers. Coleoptera, Formicidae, and Isoptera comprised 52% of the prey types identified in the LO sample, whereas Coleoptera and insect larvae represented 58% of the prey items of LL. Frogs were not frequent in the diet of either species but, in volume, represented the second most important category for LO and the first for LL. LO showed a larger trophic niche breadth than LL. The trophic niche overlap between the two species was 68.3% for percentage of prey items. The present work confirms the relative importance of frogs in the diet of both species. The greater capacity of LL in moving far away from permanent water bodies may generate better opportunities for prey selection and a narrower trophic niche breadth. The large range of prey used by these two species indicates they are generalist/opportunistic feeders.  相似文献

Tropidurus species commonly prey on arthropods, but they may also feed on vertebrates and plant material. The lizard Tropidurus oreadicus (Tropiduridae) is common in open vegetation habitats and generally has sexual dimorphism. In this study we analyzed the diet of T. oreadicus at Serra dos Carajás, Pará, in the north of Brazil. Snout-vent length (SVL) and jaw width (JW) were taken for 34 lizards. There was a significant difference in SVL and in JW, with males being larger than females. All lizards analyzed contained food in their stomachs. The diet of T. oreadicus at Serra dos Carajás was characterized by the consumption of a relative wide spectrum of food item categories (21 types of items), consisting of arthropods, part of one vertebrate and plant material, which characterizes the diet of a generalist predator. Volumetrically, the most important items in the diet of both sexes of T. oreadicus were flowers (M = 61.7%; F = 33%) and orthopterans (M = 1.7%; F = 3.5%). Ants were the most frequently consumed (100% for both sexes) and the most numerous (M = 94.5%; F = 89.4%) food item. Flowers also were frequently consumed (M = 91.7%; F = 54.5%), with their relative consumption differing significantly between sexes. There was not a significant sexual difference in prey volume, neither in number of preys per stomach, nor in type of prey ingested. There was no relationship between lizard jaw width and the mean volume of prey. The data showed that T. oreadicus is a relatively generalist lizard in terms of diet and that consumes large volumes of plant material, especially flowers of one species of genus Cassia.  相似文献

The diet of an undescribed species of Kamimuria was investigated in Tai Po Kau Forest Stream, Hong Kong, by comparing larval gut contents with the array of available prey living on and among cobble substrates. Diets were dominated by chironomids and philopotamid caddisflies, with Baetidae, Heptageniidae, Hydropsychidae and Simuliidae comprising secondary dietary items. These six taxa made up 94% of the prey individuals eaten by Kamimuria. Data analysis using a selectivity index revealed that these stoneflies fed indiscriminately, eating individual prey taxa in proportion to their availability in the environment. Large and small Kamimuria exploited essentially the same prey. A comparison of the diet of Kamimuria with the diets of four sympatric Odonata indicated that the degree of interspecific similarity was determined by the extent of overlap in microhabitat use. Diets of Euphaea decorata (Zygoptera) larvae, which live under cobbles, were most similar to Kamimuria. This is the first – albeit limited – study of the gut contents of a tropical Asian stonefly. The results suggest that these predators have the potential to limit benthic invertebrate abundance but, because Kamimuria larvae feed unselectively, community structure may not be affected by their activities.  相似文献

The diet of the black-headed heron was studied using analysis of pellets and prey remnants (225 prey items identified) collected from four sites in South African Highveld Grassland, transformed into cultivated fields. Small vertebrates comprised the staple food of chicks. Rodents were the most important vertebrate prey. Otomys irroratus comprised ca. 50% of the total biomass of vertebrate prey consumed. The diet was supplemented by small lizards, snakes, frogs and fishes. Grasshoppers, beetles, crabs and other arthropods were occasionally preyed upon.  相似文献

Capsule Redshank diet from southern Europe during migration shows spatial and seasonal variations.

Aims To assess seasonal variation in Redshank diet at a major passage site, and to compare data derived from analysing pellets or faeces.

Methods At the Odiel Marshes in 2001, pellets from spring migration (39), autumn migration (121) and midwinter (15) were analysed, together with faecal samples from autumn (84).

Results The abundance of different invertebrate groups in pellets varied between seasons. In spring, Chironomus salinarius pupae and larvae dominated by volume, followed by Ephydridae larvae and the beetle Paracymus aenus. Polychaetes and molluscs dominated in autumn, and isopods in midwinter. In autumn, chironomid larvae, Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum seeds and Artemia cysts were relatively more abundant in faeces, whereas polychaetes, isopods, molluscs and cestode cysticercoids were more abundant in pellets. Harder and/or larger items were thus relatively more abundant in pellets than faeces. Pellet analysis gave more emphasis to mudflat prey, and faeces to saltpan prey.

Conclusion Pellet and faecal analysis give different results for wader diet, and it is useful to combine the two methods. However, they show significant correlations both in diet range and rank abundance of prey items. Redshank diet shows much seasonal and spatial variation in southern Europe.  相似文献

Puttick, G. M. 1978. The diet of the Curlew Sandpiper at Langebaan Lagoon, South Africa. Ostrich 49:158-167.

Nereid worms (mainly Ceratonereis erythraensis) and the hydrobiid gastropod Assiminea globulus were the most important prey items throughout the year for Curlew Sandpipers Calidris ferruginea feeding at Langebaan Lagoon. Other important items were the amphipod Urothoe grimaldi, the crabs Hymenosoma orbiculare and Cleistostoma edwardsii and dipteran larvae (Stratiomyidae). Immature Curlew Sandpipers took smaller prey items than adult birds. The diet of male and female birds differed in the proportion, sue and range of prey items taken.  相似文献

Prey capture by a benthic coral reef hydrozoan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The natural diet and prey abundance of the benthic coral reef hydrozoan Nemalecium lighti, a common tropical species, were studied by analysing the gastrovascular contents of polyps. Prey capture was estimated from 10 samples collected at 3-h intervals during a single diel cycle (1–2 September, 1995) in the San Blas Islands (Panamá). Prey size ranged from 5 to 550 μm, with invertebrate larvae being the main contributor to the diet of the species. Prey items were found in 56–88% of the polyps over the entire diel cycle. Gastrovascular contents varied between 0.93 and 2.13 prey items per polyp. These capture incidences are among the highest reported for cnidarian species. Such rates would allow for high production rates for Nemalecium lighti, consistent with reports of the species’ fast growth and high reproduction rates. The observations suggest that some hydrozoans may be active heterotrophic components in coral reef ecosystems. Accepted: 3 January 1999  相似文献
