Sex ratio, gonadal development, breeding season and fecundity of the armoured catfish Loricariichthys castaneus were described to assess its reproductive strategy in a Brazilian tropical reservoir. In total, 226 specimens (199 females and 27 males) were captured from September 2005 to August 2006 and examined in the laboratory. Females outnumbered males and achieved sizes larger than 330 mm TL. Oocyte development, determined by histological analysis, was asynchronous with oocyte size, ranging from pre‐spawning (27–270 μm) to spawning (243–3460 μm), followed by a sharp decrease in the mean oocyte diameter postspawning (590–730 μm) as the spawning proceeded. Spawning occurred throughout most of the year, peaking in August–September and reaching a low in April–May, according to variations in GSI and frequencies of stages of gonadal development. Batch fecundity ranged from 242 to 833 vitellogenic oocytes (relative fecundity = 2.27 oocytes g?1), averaging 483 oocytes, and was positively related to gonad weight (P = 0.00003). Oocyte diameters ranged from 0.027 to 5.59 mm, with vitellogenic diameters ranging from 2.08 to 5.59 mm. Continuous development of oocytes throughout the year suggests that L. castaneus presents indeterminate fecundity and is a batch‐spawner. These attributes, associated with parental care and a wide reproductive period, correspond to an equilibrium strategy that has proved to be effective in the Lajes reservoir.  相似文献

Closely connected reservoirs were hypothesized to have more similar fish compositions than do spatially isolated reservoirs, and that environmental variables play an important role in shaping assemblage structure on a local scale. Fish assemblages and environmental variables were sampled in seven reservoirs constructed to generate hydroelectricity, with most inflowing water coming directly or via transposition of the Paraiba do Sul River, in Southeastern Brazil. Using gill nets and environmental measurement variables, fish collections were carried out between January and February 2008 (wet season), when increases in temperature and rainfall increase hydrological connectivity, facilitating fish movements throughout the river‐reservoir system. Mean fish density, biomass and the number of species did not differ significantly among the seven reservoirs. On the other hand, the assemblage structure differed among almost all pairs of reservoirs. Of the reservoirs connected in series, only two (Santana and Vigário) showed a similar assemblage structure, suggesting that hydrological connectivity plays a minor role. Physico‐chemical variables changed among reservoirs and seemed to play an important role in determining the assemblage structure, with higher conductivity (average = 108 μS cm?1) and TDS – total dissolved solid (0.07 g L?1), and low pH (5.8) in the Pereira Passos Reservoir associated with a high number of the Siluriformes Loricariichthys castaneus, and with the opposite conditions in Tocos (conductivity = 27 μS cm?1; TDS = 0.02 g L?1; pH = 7) that were associated with a high number of the carnivorous Characiformes Oligosarcus hepsetus and Hoplias malabaricus. A direct relationship was found between abundance of the catfishes Pimelodus fur and Glanidium albescens and high turbidity (90.4 NTU) and low temperature (25.3°C) and transparency (0.1 m) in the Ilha dos Pombos Reservoir. Moreover, a close relationship was found between high abundance of the cichlid Cichla kelberi and the high temperature and transparency of Lajes (28.3°C; 2.2 m) and Santa Branca (27.1°C; 2.6 m) reservoirs. These findings support the hypothesis that physico‐chemical variables structure fish assemblages in reservoirs, but that hydrological connectivity seems to play a minor role in shaping assemblage structure. However, other unmeasured variables (e.g. physical habitat characteristics and biotic interactions) and other seasons need to be evaluated in further studies.  相似文献

  1. Pissodes castaneus represents an emerging pest species for Pinus spp. production in Latin America. This species attacks all the cultivated pine species in Patagonia Argentina causing wood damage and tree death. The objectives of this work were to describe the host preference behaviour of P. castaneus and the influence of wood damage by conspecifics on its host selection.
  2. In two-choice bioassays, P. castaneus showed a feeding preference for Pinus contorta over P. ponderosa. However, percent weight gain when feeding on either species was similar.
  3. In other bioassays, P. castaneus spent more time in areas with twigs on which other conspecifics had recently fed, although they were able to successfully feed on twigs without previous damage.
  4. These results show that while P. castaneus can successfully colonize different pine species, P. contorta may be more susceptible to attack than P. ponderosa. Silvicultural management should be prioritized considering the weevil's preference for attacking damaged hosts.

Serum samples from 337 wild house mice (Mus musculus) from 35 sites in China, collected in 1992 and 1993, were examined for antibodies against lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). Ten samples from eight sites were found to contain such antibodies. Six of the eight positive sites were located in the territory of M. m. gansuensis. One of the other two sites was located in the territory of M. m. castaneus in southern China and the other site was in a habitat of M. m. castaneus which had invaded into the western end of the territory of M. m. homourus. It seems likely that LCMV is distributed in the territories of M. m. gansuensis and M. m. castaneus in China. This is the first report of detection of these antibodies in wild house mice in China and specifically in the territories of M. m. gansuensis and M. m. castaneus.  相似文献

Recent recognition of widespread polyandry in insects has generated considerable interest in understanding why females mate multiple times and in identifying factors that affect mating rate and inhibit female remating. However, little attention has been paid to understanding the question from both a female and male perspective, particularly with respect to factors that may simultaneously influence female remating rates. Here, we report on a study aimed at ascertaining the possible interactive effects that male and female size and diet, and female access to a host could have on mating latency, probability, and duration and female refractory period using two tropical fruit fly species with contrasting life histories. Of all factors tested, adult diet played the most significant role. Both Anastrepha ludens and Anastrepha obliqua males which had constant access to protein and sucrose mated more often, had shorter copulations and induced longer refractory periods in females than males fed a low quality diet (sucrose offered every third day). Female size and the interaction with male diet determined how quickly female A. ludens mated for the first time. Smaller females mated sooner with low quality fed males than with high quality fed males while there was no difference for large females, suggesting that male choice may be at play if high quality fed males discriminate against smaller females. Copulation duration also depended on both male and female nutritional condition, and the interaction between male diet and female size and diet. Large and high quality fed females had shorter copulations regardless of male condition. Importantly, for A. ludens, female refractory period depended on male size and the nutritional condition of both males and females, which could indicate that for this species, female receptivity does not depend only on the condition of the male ejaculate. For A. obliqua refractory period was associated with the interaction between male size and diet and male diet and host presence. We discuss our results in terms of male ability to inhibit female remating and the relative contribution of female condition to this behavior. We also address the importance of studying effects simultaneously on species with contrasting life histories.  相似文献

The large-scale effects of habitat alteration produced by oil-industry related pollution on the habitat use of four species of freshwater turtles (Pelusios castaneus, Pelusios niger, Pelomedusa subrufa, Trionyx triunguis) were studied in the River Niger Delta, southern Nigeria (West Africa) between 1996 and 2004. The numbers of turtle specimens observed during our study declined drastically in polluted sites, despite a nearly identical field effort. The number of specimens of all turtle species declined considerably at all habitat types, but complete disappearance in polluted areas was found only with regard to one habitat type for Trionyx triunguis and two habitat types for Pelomedusa subrufa. The mean values of species dominance and diversity indexes were not statistically significant between pristine and altered areas. Based on the interspecific similarity in proportional frequencies of turtle specimens found in each habitat type, a multivariate set of analyses (UPGMA) showed that the turtles were arranged in three ‘ecological’ clusters: a group formed by Pelomedusa subrufa at both polluted and unpolluted areas and Trionyx triunguis at polluted areas; (ii) a group formed by Pelusios castaneus in polluted areas and Pelusios niger in polluted areas; (iii) a group formed by Pelusios castaneus in unpolluted areas and Pelusios niger in unpolluted areas; however, this latter cluster was not very close, as the linkage distance was close to 80% of Euclidean distance. Habitat use similarity among turtles in both polluted and unpolluted study areas was evaluated by the use of two types of overlap formulas (Pianka and Czechanowski) and the use of Monte Carlo randomisations in order to control for the eventual role of chance in the actual data matrix. These data indicated that, for a pair of species (Pelusios niger vs. Pelusios castaneus), there was a statistically significant increase in the similarity of habitat use in the polluted areas vs. the unpolluted areas, and that this pattern was not dependent on the chance. Considering that these two species are ecologically and morphologically similar, we conclude that the most likely consequence at the community level is an increase in the intensity of interspecific competition for space between Pelusios niger and Pelusios castaneus in the polluted areas. Although the direction of the intensification of this competition process could not be easily predicted, it is likely that the species which is least adapted to life in main rivers and creeks may be disadvantaged over the other competitor. The general implications for habitat preservation are also discussed.  相似文献

This study aimed to develop a semiochemical‐baited trapping system to monitor the populations of small banded pine weevil, Pissodes castaneus, a serious pest in Pinus sylvestris young stands that are weakened by biotic and abiotic factors. The scope of the work included the development of a dispenser for compounds (ethanol and α‐pinene) emitted by P. sylvestris and the pheromones of P. castaneus: grandisol and grandisal. Additionally, the effectiveness of beetle catches in different types of traps (unitrap, cross‐unitrap and long and short pipe traps) baited with a dispenser was assessed. The olfactometric studies showed that most of the newly hatched beetles that had not fed were attracted by a mixture of grandisol and grandisal. However, in the group of feeding beetles, half were attracted by a mixture of ethanol and α‐pinene. These results indicated that both pheromones and α‐pinene plus ethanol should be useful for capturing P. castaneus beetles. In the field trials, the highest efficiency was found in baited unitraps that caught up to several hundred P. castaneus beetles, while the baited cross‐unitraps caught up to a few dozen beetles. No insects were found in either type of baited pipe trap or in any of the unbaited control traps. The baited unitraps and cross‐unitraps also collected, with varied intensity, Hylobius abietis beetles, a serious pest of reforestations. These results indicate the possibility of using a unitrap baited with a 4‐component attractant for monitoring P. castaneus in integrated pest management for the protection of young forests.  相似文献

  • 1 Ecological interactions between banded pine weevil Pissodes castaneus and blue‐stain fungus Leptographium serpens, when simultaneously sharing the same host plant (maritime pine Pinus pinaster) in winter and spring, were investigated. Temporal components of the interaction were taken into account by either introducing the weevils and the pathogen simultaneously or sequentially, with the weevils being introduced 1 month after the fungal inoculation.
  • 2 We measured larval mortality, development time, offspring number, sex ratio and body size of P. castaneus. Phloem phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations were also assessed. Furthermore, we tested whether: (i) emerging offspring transported propagules of the fungus; (ii) artificially‐contaminated weevils may transmit the disease to healthy trees; and (iii) field collected P. castaneus carry the fungus.
  • 3 The fungus enhanced weevil colonization and brood production in both seasons. During winter and spring, adults from trees where the pathogen was inoculated prior to weevil introduction emerged earlier than weevils from trees where they had been introduced simultaneously with the fungus. During winter, weevils from pre‐inoculated trees were also larger. Sex ratio and larval mortality were not affected. Leptographium serpens did not affect phloem nitrogen content but phosphorus content was greater in plants inoculated with the pathogen, which may explain the findings on weevil growth.
  • 4 Sixty‐five percent of the weevils that emerged from inoculated trees carried spores of L. serpens, although no successful isolation was made from field collected weevils. The fungus was recovered from 25% of the trees infested with artificially‐contaminated weevils.
  • 5 These results suggest that P. castaneus benefits from the presence of L. serpens and may contribute to its spread.

The worldwide distributed house mouse, Mus musculus, is subdivided into at least three lineages, Mus musculus musculus, Mus musculus domesticus, and Mus musculus castaneus. The subspecies occur parapatrically in a region considered to be the cradle of the species in Southern Asia (‘central region’), as well as in the rest of the world (‘peripheral region’). The morphological evolution of this species in a phylogeographical context is studied using a landmark‐based approach on mandible morphology of different populations of the three lineages. The morphological variation increases from central to peripheral regions at the population and subspecific levels, confirming a centrifugal sub‐speciation within this species. Furthermore, the outgroup comparison with sister species suggests that M. musculus musculus and populations of all subspecies inhabiting the Iranian plateau have retained a more ancestral mandible morphology, suggesting that this region may represent one of the relevant places of the origin of the species. Mus musculus castaneus, both from central and peripheral regions, is morphologically the most variable and divergent subspecies. Finally, the results obtained in the present study suggest that the independent evolution to commensalism in the three lineages is not accompanied by a convergence detectable on jaw morphology. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 635–647.  相似文献

Several arguments have been put forward to explain how sexual selection drives the evolution of sexual trait allometry, especially hyperallometry. The ‘positive allometry theory’ suggests that hyperallometry is a rule in all‐secondary sexual traits, whereas the ‘display hypothesis’ suggests that only males in good condition will exhibit hyperallometric sexual display traits. In the present study, we investigated: (1) the condition‐dependence nature (by using two diet treatments that varied in the amount of food provided to the larvae) of a sexually selected trait (wing pigmentation; WP) in recently‐emerged adults of the American rubyspot damselfly, Hetaerina americana, and (2) the scaling relationship between WP and body size (wing and body length) in the rubyspot damselflies H. americana and Hetaerina vulnerata, according to alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs; territorial and nonterritorial males). First, we found support that indicated that diet positively affected WP length, although there was no significant WP allometric pattern in relation to diet regimes. Second, WP was hyperallometric in both Hetaerina species. WP size was similar between ARTs and, in H. americana (but not H. vulnerata), nonterritorial males showed steeper slopes than territorial males when wing length was used. The results obtained support the notion that sexual traits are hyperallometric, although there is no clear pattern in relation to ARTs. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Japanese house mice (Mus musculus molossinus) are thought to be a hybrid lineage derived from two prehistoric immigrants, the subspecies M. m. musculus of northern Eurasia and M. m. castaneus of South Asia. Mice of the western European subspecies M. m. domesticus have been detected in Japanese ports and airports only. We examined haplotype structuring of a 200 kb stretch on chromosome 8 for 59 mice from throughout Eurasia, determining short segments (≈ 370–600 bp) of eight nuclear genes (Fanca, Spire2, Tcf25, Mc1r, Tubb3, Def8, Afg3l1 and Dbndd1) which are intermittently arranged in this order. Where possible we identified the subspecies origin for individual gene alleles and then designated haplotypes for concatenated alleles. We recovered 11 haplotypes among 19 Japanese mice examined, identified either as ‘intact’ haplotypes derived from the subspecies musculus (57.9%), domesticus (7.9%), and castaneus (2.6%), or as ‘recombinant’ haplotypes (31.6%). We also detected recombinant haplotypes unique to Sakhalin. The complex nature of the recombinant haplotypes suggests ancient introduction of all three subspecies components into the peripheral part of Eurasia or complicated genomic admixture before the movement from source areas. ‘Intact’domesticus and castaneus haplotypes in other Japanese wild mice imply ongoing stowaway introductions. The method has general utility for assessing the history of genetic admixture and for disclosing ongoing genetic contamination.  相似文献

The diet of the small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula, captured in the Aegean Sea by bottom-trawl from 2006 to 2012, was investigated with respect to sex, maturity condition, sampling location and season. The stomach contents of 432 specimens, measuring from 144 to 517?mm in total length, were analysed. The cumulative prey curve showed that the sample size was adequate to describe the species’ diet, which was quantified using the percentage gravimetric composition (%W). The identified prey items belonged to eight major groups: Teleostei, Chondrichthyes, Crustacea, Cephalopoda, Annelida, Echinodermata, phanerogams and macroalgae, with Teleostei, Crustacea and Cephalopoda being the most consumed in both females (%W?=?48.1, 16.0 and 31.4, respectively) and males (%W?=?33.9, 31.6 and 29.8, respectively). Higher diet diversity was observed in males than females, in immature individuals than mature ones, regardless of sex, as well as in spring in comparison to autumn and winter. Feeding intensity seemed to be influenced mainly by sex and maturity condition. No significant dietary overlap was observed for all possible combinations of the factors examined. Gut indices were compared between the two sexes with females showing statistically significantly higher median relative gut length, as well as a longer gut than males of the same length. Based on the diet composition, S. canicula can be considered a generalist predator consuming, with geographical differentiation, a wide variety of benthic taxa. The estimated fractional trophic level (τ?=?4.22) classified the species as a carnivore with a preference for Teleostei and Cephalopoda, thus confirming its key role in the food web.  相似文献

We evaluated fish assemblage diet and trophic structure in five lakes (Patos, Zé do Paco, Fechada, Ressaco do Pau Véio and das Garças), connected or not with the river. Trophic structure analysis was based on the species whose number of sampled digestive tracts was greater or equal to 10 and ordinated according to a detrended correspondence analysis. We identified seven trophic guilds with the following representatives: (1) Detritivorous–ileophagous: Cyphocharax modestus, Prochilodus lineatus, Steindachnerina insculpta and Loricariichthys platymetopon; (2) Herbivorous: Schizodon borellii and Leporinus lacustris; (3) Benthophagous: Iheringichthys labrosus, Satanoperca pappaterra and Trachydoras paraguayensis; (4) Insectivorous: Astyanax altiparanae, Moenkhausia intermedia and Parauchenipterus galeatus; (5) Piscivorous: Hoplias cf. malabaricus and Serrasalmus marginatus; (6) Carnivorous–carcinophagous: Pimelodus maculatus and (7) Insectivorous–lepidophagous: Roeboides paranensis. The detritivorous–ileophagous guild was the predominant one in the five lakes.  相似文献

We have examined the same kappa chain variable (V) region family in several mouse species in order to observe short-term, incremental change at immunoglobun (Ig) multigene loci. In the present study, the Igk-V24 family has been characterized in a Mus m. castaneus colony derived from individuals originating in Thailand and compared to the same family in Mus m. domesticus (BALB/c) and Mus pahari, representing about 1 – 2 and about 5 – 9 million years of evolution, respectively. Southern hybridization of genomic DNA with a probe encoding the prototype Igk-V24 coding region reveals restriction fragment patterns indicative of two distinct M. m. castaneus haplotypes. These haplotypes appear to result from an unequal recombination between similar gene arrays, as their restriction patterns are unique but contain many common fragments. The complexity of these patterns indicates a marked expansion in the Igk-V24 family of M. m. castaneus relative to BALB/c and M. pahari. Additional analyses using probes specific for individual subsets demonstate that the expansion is not general throughout the entire family, but is restricted to particular subsets and therefore to relatively short chromosomal segments. One subset alone accounts for most of the expansion and comprises over 40% of the entire M. m. castaneus family. The wide range of Igk-V24 family complexity seen among M. m. castaneus, M. m. domesticus, and M. pahari, as well as among the different M. m. castaneus family subsets, suggests a model of random evolution in V family copy number rather than one which is selective.  相似文献

We studied seasonal changes in feeding habits of size-structured fish assemblages in three freshwater reservoirs in Sri Lanka. We obtained fish samples for diet analysis from three reservoirs during the months of rising water level (RIWL) and receding water level (REWL). During RIWL, peripheral areas with terrestrial/semi-terrestrial macrophytes get inundated, which resulted in increased food availability for macrophyte feeding fish. During REWL, detrital food sources increase due to decaying terrestrial plant material, which has inundated. Based on the dietary habits of individual species in the three reservoirs during RIWL and REWL, it is evident that detritivorous and phytoplanktivorous fish species, which belong to low trophic levels do not show significant variation in dietary habits between the two seasons (e.g. Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis niloticus and Amblypharyngodon melettinus). Stenophagous species such as benthic invertebrate predators (Puntius chola and Puntius dorsalis), macrophytophagous species (Etroplus suratensis and Tilapia rendalli) and zooplanktivorous Hemirhamphus limbatus do not exhibit significant variation in dietary habits between seasons. Also their feeding habits do not vary with body size. Euryphagous species such as Puntius filamentosus on the other hand, exhibit variations in dietary habits between seasons as well as with body size. Stenophagous species, which feed on detritus and phytoplankton and euryphagous species, which exhibit temporal dietary plasticity, are therefore abundant in fish assemblages of these reservoirs.  相似文献

Antigenic specificities of complement factor H from mice were studied serologically. In addition to previously reported allotypes, referred to as H.1 and H.2, a new allotype of complement factor H, H.3, was identified in the BFM/2Ms strain derived from European wild mice. Using three different alloantisera raised against the various mouse factor H allotype, a serological survey of the common laboratory strains and wild-derived strains of Mus musculus and its relatives, Mus spretus, Mus spretoides, and Mus spicilegus was carried out. All of the common laboratory strains examined in this survey had the H.1 allotype except for STR/N which had H.2. The geographical distributions of factor H allotypes in M. musculus were specific to the subspecies. Mice derived from Mus musculus domesticus and Mus musculus castaneus had the H.1 allotype. Mice derived from M. m. musculus, Mus musculus bactrianus, and Mus musculus molossinus had the H.2 allotype. Only BFM/2Ms and BFM/1Mpl strains derived from M. m. domesticus had the novel H.3 allotype. Sera of mice from strains derived from M. spretoides and M. spicilegus cross-reacted with H.2-specific antiserum, and those from M. spretus cross-reacted with H.3-specific antiserum.  相似文献

Previous QTL studies have identified 24 QTLs for body weight and growth from 3 to 10 weeks after birth in an intersubspecific backcross mouse population between C57BL/6J and wild Mus musculus castaneus that has 60% of the body size of C57BL/6J. The castaneus allele at the most potent QTL (Pbwg1) on proximal chromosome 2 retards growth. In this study we have developed a congenic strain with a 44.1-Mb interval containing the castaneus allele at Pbwg1 by recurrent backcrossing to C57BL/6J. The congenic mouse developed was characterized by significantly higher body weight gain between 1 and 3 weeks of age and lower weight of white fat pads at 10 weeks of age than C57BL/6J. However, no clear difference in body weight at 1–10 weeks of age was observed between congenic and C57BL/6J strains. QTL analysis with 269 F2 mice between the two strains did not identify any QTLs for body weight at 1, 3, 6, and 10 weeks of age, but it discovered eight closely linked QTLs affecting body weight gain from 1 to 3 weeks of age, lean body weight, weight of white fat pads, and body length within the Pbwg1 region. The castaneus alleles at all fat pad QTLs reduced the phenotypes, whereas at the remaining growth and body composition QTLs, they increased the trait values. These results illustrate that Pbwg1, which initially appeared to be a single locus, was resolved into several loci with opposite effects on the composition traits of overall body weight. This gives a reason for the loss of the Pbwg1 effect found in the original backcross population. Pheromones are among the most important sexual signals used by organisms throughout the animal kingdom. However, few are identified in vertebrates, leaving the evolutionary mechanisms underlying vertebrate pheromones poorly understood. Pre‐existing biases in receivers' perceptual systems shape visual and auditory signalling systems, but studies on how receiver biases influence the evolution of pheromone communication remain sparse. The lamprey Petromyzon marinus uses a relatively well‐understood suite of pheromones and offers a unique opportunity to study the evolution of vertebrate pheromone communication. Previous studies indicate that male signalling with the mating pheromone 3‐keto petromyzonol sulphate (3kPZS) may exploit a nonsexual attraction to juvenile‐released 3kPZS that guides migration into productive rearing habitat. Here, we infer the distribution of male signalling with 3kPZS using a phylogenetic comparison comprising six of 10 genera and two of three families. Our results indicate that only P. marinus and Ichthyomyzon castaneus release 3kPZS at high rates. Olfactory and behavioural assays with P. marinus, I. castaneus and a subset of three other species that do not use 3kPZS as a sexual signal indicate that male signalling might have driven the evolution of female adaptations to detect 3kPZS with specific olfactory mechanisms and respond to 3kPZS with targeted attraction relevant during mate search. We postulate that 3kPZS communication evolved independently in I. castaneus and P. marinus, but cannot eliminate the alternative that other species lost 3kPZS communication. Regardless, our results represent a rare macroevolutionary investigation of a vertebrate pheromone and provide insight into the evolutionary mechanisms underlying pheromone communication.  相似文献

The house mouse, Mus musculus, was first introduced into New Zealand in significant numbers in the early to mid nineteenth century, with genomic components from different sources of the three subspecies M. m. domesticus, M. m. musculus and M. m. castaneus. M. m. domesticus is now widely distributed in New Zealand, with genomic and morphological evidence of M. m. musculus in a few scattered locations. M. m. domesticus/M. m. castaneus hybrids are dominant in the southern third of the South Island. We anticipated that there should be a definable southern contact zone between pure M. m. domesticus and M. m. domesticus/M. m. castaneus hybrids. We tested this hypothesis by screening 170 DNA samples from mice collected in the southern South Island, using a PCR technique which rapidly distinguishes the mitochondrial genomes of the three subspecies. All mice sampled from in or north of Lincoln (43.63° S) had only M. m. domesticus mtDNA, whereas all those from or further south than Hook (44.68° S) had M. m. castaneus mtDNA. Between the two sites, mice carrying mtDNA of both subspecies were found, sometimes in the same building. On present data, this contact zone extends approximately 50 km north to south and some 30 km inland. Classical tests with three nuclear DNA markers confirmed earlier work showing that the nuclear genomes of all mice appeared to be predominantly domesticus-like.We conclude that if purebred M. m. castaneus mice did originally reach New Zealand, extensive backcrossing with M. m. domesticus has made the castaneus nuclear genome virtually undetectable with the tests that we employ.  相似文献

Mating in the scaly cricket Ornebius aperta often includes the transfer of many spermatophores to individual females during extended copulatory interactions. We manipulated male condition in staged matings to determine whether this could explain variation in the number of repeated copulations seen across pairs. Males on a high nutrient diet were in good condition, were more likely to mate repeatedly, and transferred more spermatophores on average than low-diet males (in poor condition). High-diet males were more likely to produce a vibratory signal that increased female receptivity to repeated mating attempts. Courtship and copulatory interactions were always terminated by females, and in every case males had already formed a spermatophore when deserted by females. We conclude that variation in male repeated mating success may be due to female choice rather than an inability or unwillingness of low-diet males to produce spermatophores.  相似文献
