The authors describe Mixtacandona elegans n. sp.,M. pietrosanii n. sp., M. tabacarui n. sp. and present new data on the systematics and biogeography of the following Mixtacandona groups: ljovuschkini, hvarensis and riongessa. Mixtacandona elegans n. sp. belongs to the group ljovuschkini. The carapace is very elongated and has markedly assymetrical valves. The species has been found in a porous aquifer in southeastern Bulgaria. M. pietrosanii n. sp. belongs to the group hvarensis. The 3rd antennular segment and the 2nd endopodial segment of the cleaning leg have each two setae. The species lives in porous aquifers in the Danube plain in Roumania. M. tabacarui n. sp. (gr. riongessa) has a triangular left valve with a pointed dorsal protuberance. The species has been found in wells fed by karstic water in southern dobrodgea (Roumania), on the Black Sea coast.  相似文献

Plant pathogen effectors encoded by Avirulence (Avr) genes benefit the pathogen by promoting colonization and benefit plants that have a matching resistance (R) gene by constituting a signal that triggers resistance. The Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), resembles a plant pathogen in showing R/Avr interactions. Because of these interactions, a wheat plant with the H13 resistance gene can be resistant or susceptible depending on the genotype of the larva that attacks the plant, being resistant if attack comes from a larva with a functional vH13 gene, but susceptible if attack comes from a larva with a non‐functional vH13 gene. In this study we asked: does this susceptible interaction involving plants with H13 look like susceptible interactions with plants lacking H13? Possibly, the H13 plant attacked by a larva with a non‐functional vH13 is induced to partial rather than complete resistance. Or the larva, lacking its vH13‐encoded effector, is compromised in its ability to induce susceptibility, which includes forcing the plant to create a gall nutritive tissue. Responses of epidermal cells to larval attack were explored using imaging techniques (light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy). Whole‐organism responses were investigated by measuring the growth of plants and larvae. No evidence was found for partial resistance responses by H13 plants or for a compromise in the ability of vH13 loss‐of‐function larvae to induce susceptibility. It appears that disrupting vH13 function is sufficient for overcoming the induced resistance mediated by the H13 gene.  相似文献

We have studied larvae of the freshwater ctenostome Hislopia malayensis with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and LM of serial sections. Some additional observations on larvae of M. membranacea using SEM and CLSM are also reported. The overall configuration of muscles, nerves, and cilia of the two larvae are identical. However, the larva of H. malayensis is much smaller than that of M. membranacea, which may explain most of the differences observed. Although all major nerves and muscle strands are present in H. malayensis, they are generally composed of fewer fibers. The H. malayensis larva lacks the anterior and posterior intervalve cilia. Its pyriform organ is unciliated with only a small central depression. The adhesive epithelium is not invaginated as an adhesive sac and lacks the large muscles interpreted as adhesive sac muscles in the M. membranacea larva. The velum carries two rows of ciliated cells, though the lower “row” consists of only one or two cells. Both rows of ciliated cells are innervated by nerves, which have not been detected in the M. membranacea larva. The ciliated ridge of H. malayensis lacks the frontal cilia. The planktotrophic cyphonautes larvae in a number of ctenostome clades and in the “basal” cheilostome clade Malacostega (and probably in the earliest cheilostomes) support the idea that the cyphonautes larva is the ancestral larval type of the Eurystomata. It may even represent the ancestral larval type of the bryozoans (= ectoprocts). J. Morphol. 271:1094‐1109, 2010. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The life cycle and developmental stages of Aylax hypecoi (Trotter, 1913, Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Aylacini) were studied in detail. Aylax hypecoi is known to induce galls in fruits of two Hypecoum species — H. imberbe and H. geslini (Papaveraceae) and the larva develops in host plant fruits. The morphology and development of egg, larva and pupa were investigated, which has previously not been done. The shape and size of terminal-instar larvae and associated galls are sex-specific. Overwintering stage, adult emergence and flying periods, and egg productivity were studied also.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the families Heterorhabditidae and Steinernematidae have considerable potential as biological control agents of soil-inhabiting insect pests. In the present study, the control potential of the EPNs Steinernema carpocapsae (TUR-S4), S. feltiae (Nemaplus), S. carpocapsae (Nemastar), S. feltiae (TUR-S3) and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Nematop) against a new longicorn pest, Dorcadion pseudopreissi Breuning, 1962 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), on turf was examined in laboratory studies. Pathogenicity tests were performed at the following doses: 50, 100 and 150 Dauer Juveniles (DJs)/larva at 25°C. Highest mortalities (75–92%) of the larvae were detected at the dose of 150 DJs/larva for all nematodes used. Reproduction capabilities of the used EPNs were examined at doses of 50, 75, 100 and 150 DJs/larva at 25°C. S. carpocapsae (TUR-S4) had the most invasions (32 DJs/larva) and reproduction (28042 DJs/larva) at the dose of 100 DJs, and the highest reproduction (per invaded DJ into a larva) was observed in H. bacteriophora (Nematop) (2402.85 DJs) at a dose of 50 DJs. The foraging behaviour of the nematodes in the presence of D. pseudopreissi and Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Galleriidae) larvae was studied using a Petri dish filled with sand at 20°C. All of the used nematodes accumulated near the larvae section of both insect species (32–53% of recovered DJs) with a higher percentage of S. carpocapsae (TUR-S4) (53%) and H. bacteriophora (48%) (Nematop) moving towards larvae of D. pseudopreissi, than the S. feltiae strains.  相似文献

The influence of parasitism by Hyposoter didymator (Thunberg; Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) and Chelonus inanitus (Linnaeus) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on the growth and food consumption of their host Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was studied in the laboratory. Parasitised larvae consumed significantly less artificial diet than unparasitised ones. Egg parasitisation by C. inanitus affected host larval consumption from the second day after emergence and it was significantly different from that of unparasitised ones. H. didymator, however, started to reduce larval consumption 4 days after parasitisation on the third instar host larvae. The overall reduction achieved by the larval endoparasitoid H. didymator is higher than that caused by the egg-larval endoparasitoid C. inanitus. The final body weight of a parasitised host larva by H. didymator and C. inanitus was only 6.7 and 13.0% of the maximum weight of an unparasitised sixth instar larva respectively. Moreover, parasitised larvae never reached the last instar. Results indicated that parasitised larvae might cause considerable less damage to the host plant than unparasitised ones.  相似文献

Intraspecific host discrimination and larval competition were studied forMicroplitis croceipes (Cresson),Microplitis demolitor Wilkinson,Cotesia kazak (Telenga), andHyposoter didymator (Thunberg), solitary endoparasitoids of the tobacco budworm,Heliothis virescens (F.). In ovipositional choice tests between unparasitized and parasitized hosts, the mean number of ovipositions for unparasitized hosts was significantly higher than the mean number of ovipositions for hosts parasitized once by a conspecific female forC. kazak andH. didymator, demonstrating that females of these two species discriminate against hosts recently (within a few seconds) parasitized by a conspecific female. No significant difference in oviposition occurred between these two kinds of hosts forM. croceipes andM. demolitor. Mean percent parasitization by a second conspecific female was determined at 24, 48, and 72 h delays in time between the first and second female attack, and with no delay. Except for the 0 h time delay forC. kazak andH. didymator, percent parasitization by a second conspecific female generally decreased as the delay in time between the first and second female attack increased. When the second parasitization immediately followed the first, one parasitoid larva always eliminated the other by physical combat. With a 24 or 48 h delay between the first and second parasitization, the younger larva was the victor over the older larva forM. croceipes, M. demolitor andC. kazak in at least 50% of the cases. Elimination of older larvae by younger larva was by physical attack. However, forH. didymator, the older instar was the victor, and elimination of younger larvae by older larvae was probably through physiological processes. Further, older larvae ofH. didymator apparently killed the eggs of the second female by physiological processes.   相似文献

Intensive use of chemical insecticides against Helicoverpa armigera has led to the development of resistance to the major chemical families of insecticides. Consequently, management of H. armigera using conventional chemical insecticides is increasingly difficult. Methoxyfenozide is an agonist of the insect moulting hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone that acts faster than chitin synthesis inhibitors. The present work is aimed to assess the effectiveness of methoxyfenozide for use against H. armigera on cotton in Benin, West Africa. Laboratory tests and field experiments have been carried out. For laboratory studies, topical application of methoxyfenozide was done using L2 and L5 instar larva of H. armigera. Tested methoxyfenozide concentrations varied from 24 μl/ml to 144 μl/ml and the control is water only. For field experiments, a complete randomised block design was used with methoxyfenozide (72 μl/ml) and a control (no spraying). Berthoud Ultra Low Volume sprayer was used to spray methoxyfenozide suspension at 60-l per hectare. Two sprays were applied, 7 days apart. Laboratory tests indicated that 24 h after application of methoxyfenozide, about 100% of treated L2 and L5 larva were morbid or dead compared with 0% for the control larva. There are no significant differences between tested concentrations. Morbid larvae died within 2 days. In field experiments, cotton yield harvested on methoxyfenozide treated plants was double of that obtained on untreated plants (9375 kg and 4875 kg per hectare respectively). Thus methoxyfenozide may be used as component of Integrated Pest Control Programme on cotton in Benin, West Africa.  相似文献

The 28-spotted potato ladybeetle, Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), is a major agricultural pest that primarily causes serious damage to solanaceous plants. The destructive potential of H. vigintioctopunctata is high at the larval stages. The cover photo shows that H. vigintioctopunctata third instar larva eating on the surface of eggplant leaf; it can be easily killed after ingestion of dsHvvATPase A or dsHvvATPase E (see pages xxx-xxx). The predation potential of Haplothrips brevitubus (Karny) for thrips was evaluated in the laboratory. When second stage larvae of Pseudodendrothrips mori (Niwa) were presented to an adult H. brevitubus at densities of 10, 20, 30, and 40 larvae per cage at 25 °C over 24 h, the number of larvae consumed per day increased with an increasing density up to 30. Predation of H. brevitubus exhibited the type II functional response. The mean development time of the egg, larva, and pupa of H. brevitubus were 4.5, 9.6, and 4.8 days, respectively, at 25 °C. The survival rate from egg to adult emergence was 94.7%. One H. brevitubus larva consumed 41.6 P. mori larvae on average during the total larval period. Adult longevity was 35.2 days in females and 34.6 days in males. The pre-oviposition period was 2.7 days and the oviposition period was 31.5 days. The lifetime fecundity was 120.1 eggs and the mean daily oviposition rate was 3.6 eggs. Calculated mean generation time (T) was 29.5 days, intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was 0.162, and net reproductive rate (R0) was 56.5. The rm value of H. brevitubus was higher than that of Thrips palmi Karny and almost equal to that of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande). These results indicate that H. brevitubus has good potential as a predator of P. mori and is likely to be useful for controlling thrips.  相似文献

The efficacy of five entomopathogenic nematode strains of the families Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae was tested against the neonate larvae of Capnodis tenebrionis. The nematode strains screened included two of Steinernema carpocapsae (Exhibit and M137), and one each of S. feltiae (S6), S. arenarium (S2), and Heterorhanditis bacteriophora (P4). Exposure of neonate larvae of Capnodis to 10 and 150 infective juveniles (IJs) per larva (equivalent to 3 and 48 IJs/cm2 respectively) in test tubes with sterile sand, resulted in mortality between 60–91% and 96–100%, respectively. At a concentration of 150 IJs/larva, all of the nematode strains were highly virulent. Both S. carpocapsae strains (Exhibit and M137) caused infection and mortality to larvae more quickly than the other strains. However, at a lower concentration assay (10 IJs/larva), S. arenarium was the most virulent strain. The penetration rate as an indicator of entomopathogenic nematode infection was also evaluated. The highest value was recorded for S. arenarium (36%), followed by H. bacteriophora (30.6%), S. feltiae (23.1%), and S. carpocapsae (20.7%).  相似文献

1. Two basic tenets of competition among parasitoids, that taxonomically distinct parasitoids are unable to discriminate against hosts that have previously been attacked by a competitor and that previous parasitism reduces the quality of a host, were tested by monitoring the oviposition response of Hyssopus pallidus, a gregarious ectoparasitoid, to healthy codling moth larvae and codling moth larvae that had previously been parasitised by a solitary endoparasitoid, Ascogaster quadridentata. 2. Hyssopus pallidus accepted both categories of host larva for oviposition when its competitor was constrained as a first‐instar larva by the diapause development of its host, but discriminated against previously parasitised host larvae when its competitor was present as a larger larva in a non‐diapausing host. 3. Hyssopus pallidus distinguished between the two categories of host larva by allocating twice as many eggs to host larvae previously parasitised by A. quadridentata, a response that was not influenced by previous oviposition experience. 4. The larger clutch sizes allocated to previously parasitised host larvae produced twice as many female progeny, each of a typical size, such that the total biomass was twice that produced from the smaller clutches laid on healthy host larvae. Possible confounding influences of host age and diapause are discounted. 5. These results demonstrate that interspecific discrimination does occur in H. pallidus and that host quality can be improved through previous parasitism by an endoparasitoid. Although interspecific discrimination appears rare among insect parasitoids, it may have been overlooked among ectoparasitoids and requires examination of the fitness consequences of interspecific interactions to clarify its adaptive significance.  相似文献

Field parasitism of two lady beetles, a recently introduced species, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, and an indigenous species, Coleomegilla maculata lengi Timberlake, by Dinocampus coccinellae Schrank (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was investigated in southwestern Québec. Adult coccinellids were sampled from June to September 2001 in alfalfa and corn fields. Parasitism rates were recorded by dissection and rearing of coccinellids in controlled condition. The average proportions of coccinellids with a parasitoid larva were 4.6%for H. axyridis and 32%for C. maculata but 0%of the H. axyridis and 5.9%of theC. maculatawere successfully parasitized. In July, more C. maculata than H. axyridiswere found to be parasitized and among all individuals dissected, C. maculata were more frequently found superparasitized than H. axyridis. Our results suggest that D. coccinellae is not well adapted to H. axyridis in Quebec. This is the first mention of H. axyridis being attacked by D. coccinellae in Canada.  相似文献

Setal variability and the other morphological characters of juvenile stages and adult of Hydrozetes lemnae (Coggi, 1897) and H. thienemanni Strenzke, 1943 were investigated. In the juveniles of both species the length and shape of some setae vary, especially in the gastronotic region, more so in H. lemnae, which is parthenogenetic and reproduces by thelytoky, than in H. thienemanni, which is dioecious. The former species usually has more thick setae in the anterior and medial regions of the gastronotum, especially in the larva, compared to the latter. In the juveniles of H. lemnae the prodorsal setae le and in are longer, and in the nymphs the gastronotal setae of the l-series are usually longer than in H. thienemanni. These species differ distinctly by the number of long setae in the posterior part of the nymphs; in H. lemnae three pairs of long setae occur, while in H. thienemanni only two pairs; the respective juvenile stages of H. lemnae are also smaller than those of H. thienemanni. In the adults the number of c-series setae varies, as seta c 1 is lost, and in some individuals also seta c 3, and only seta c 2 remains.  相似文献

The sea urchin Heliocidaris tuberculata is typical of most echinoids in having a small egg and a feeding larva, while H. erythrogramma has a large egg and modified development through a non-feeding larvae. The carotenoids in the gonads of these two species were investigated from the comparative biochemical points of view. The carotenoid content of the buoyant eggs of H. erythrogramma was approximately 60 times that of the negatively-buoyant eggs of H. tuberculata. With respect to cytoplasmic volume, however, the carotenoid concentration in the eggs of H. tuberculata was approximately twice that in the eggs of H. erythrogramma. In both species β-echinenone was the principal carotenoid found and their carotenoid patterns were similar. It is very interesting from a functional point of view that carotenoid levels per cytoplasmic volume are conserved across most of the species we have examined irrespective of phylogeny and egg size. In light of this result we suggest that carotenoids may play an important role in developing stage in all echinoids including indirect and direct developers.  相似文献

The elder-instar larva of Altica deserticola is described for the first time, and the last-instar larva of A. engstroemi is re-described. The diagnostic characters are included. The former species develops on Glycyrrhiza, and the latter one, on Filipendula ulmaria. Some questions on the general morphology of the larvae of Altica are discussed.  相似文献

The sea urchin Heliocidaris erythrogramma is a direct developer; it progresses directly from the gastrula to the juvenile adult without forming a pluteus larva. No larval skeleton is formed by mesenchyme cells, but formation of the juvenile skeleton is accelerated. We have examined two alterations in mesenchyme cell behavior that accompany this striking change in developmental pattern. 1) Rapid cell proliferation produces 1700–2200 mesenchyme cells by mid-gastrula, compared to 30–60 primary mesenchyme cells in species with typical larval development. This change may reflect the accelerated production of adult structures in H. erythrogramma. 2) B2C2 is a monoclonal antibody that recognizes primary (Anstrom et al., 1987) and adult mesenchyme cells associated with skeleton formation in typical developers. The altered pattern of B2C2 staining in H. erythrogramma (e.g., a later initial appearance of the B2C2 antigen) suggests that H. erythrogramma has deleted part of a larval program of development and accelerated its adult program of development. These results indicate that cellular and molecular heterochronies accompany the morphological changes in H. erythrogramma development.  相似文献
