Social insect workers usually participate first in intranidal tasks (i.e. act as nurses within the nest) and then switch to extranidal tasks and become foragers. However, foragers sometimes switch back again to brood care and become reverted nurses. Behavioural and physiological correlates of the transition nurse–forager (behavioural maturation) and forager–reverted nurse (behavioural reversion) are relatively well known in the honeybee, although they are less explored in ants. To understand better the role of biogenic amines in ant behavioural maturation and behavioural reversion, the levels of octopamine (OA), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5‐HT) are examined in the brains of nurses, foragers and reverted nurses of the red wood ant Formica polyctena Först. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Brain OA levels and the ratios OA : DA and OA : 5‐HT are higher in nurses than in foragers and reverted nurses. Reverted nurses and foragers do not differ significantly with respect to brain biogenic amine levels and amine ratios. Biogenic amine levels in brains of workers of F. polyctena are thus maturation‐related rather than task‐related. This is one of the first studies of neurochemical correlates of ant behavioural maturation and the first attempt to identify neurobiological correlates of ant behavioural reversion. The data obtained provide further evidence that neurobiological processes underlying honeybee and ant behavioural maturation and behavioural reversion reveal important differences.  相似文献

The number and relationships of reproducing individuals create the observed genetic heterogeneity within a social insect colony. These are referred to as sociogenetic organization and were studied in the red ants M. ruginodis and M. lobicornis. Direct observations of the queen numbers were obtained by excavating colonies. The effective number of reproducing individuals was estimated from genetic relatedness based on genotype frequency data. Sociogenetic organization of colonies of both species is simple. The number of queens is low, single mating of queens is the rule and queen to queen variation in worker production is minor. The important variables of sociogenetic organization are the number and relatedness of coexisting queens in polygynous colonies. Queen nestmates are related on average by 0.405 in polygynous colonies of M. ruginodis, showing that colonies recruit their own daughters as new reproductives. The distribution of queen number in M. ruginodis indicates that the study population contains both microgyna and macrogyna types of the species. The large proportion of colonies where the resident queen(s) is not the mother of the workers shows that the average life span of a queen is short and colonies are serially polygynous.  相似文献

Worker‐queen conflicts over reproductive allocation (colony maintenance vs. reproduction) and sex allocation (females vs. males) were examined in two populations of the facultatively polygynous ant Myrmica ruginodis. Plasticity of social organization in the form of two co‐existing social types (microgyna and macrogyna) has a profound effect on reproductive allocation. Workers control sex allocation by biasing sex ratios towards their own interest, but local resource competition (LRC) because of restricted dispersal of microgyna females resulted in male bias in one study population. Colony sex ratios were split and followed the predictions of the split sex ratio theory: single queen colonies with higher relatedness asymmetry (RA) produced more females than multiple queen colonies with lower RA. Single and multiple queen colonies showed similar patterns in most aspects of their reproduction, and reproductive allocation could not be explained by the hypothesis tested. This suggests that reproductive allocation conflict is of minor importance in M. ruginodis.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of the queen on worker behaviour in ants and their queen recognition behaviour. Queenless and queenright homo- and hetero-specific groups were created using three Myr-micinae species (Manica rubida, Myrmica rubra and Myrmica ruginodis). In homospecific groups, the presence of a queen contributed to an increase in the brood care, which had an effect on all other tasks of the group. In heterospecific groups, the presence of a queen led workers to care more for the conspecific brood. The queen appears to be a factor in the maintenance of both behavioural characteristics of the workers and the organization of the colony. The absence of the queen revealed some behavioural differences between species compared and populations that did not occur in queenright groups. Attractiveness tests were also conducted on these colonies. In homospecific queenright groups, workers were attracted both by unfamiliar conspecific and allospecific queens, but they were attracted more by the former. Therefore, queens appear to emit volatile pheromones which have a non-species-specific and a species-specific attractant effect. In heterospecific groups, workers were attracted more by an unfamiliar queen of the familiar species (even if allospecific) than by an unfamiliar conspecific queen, suggesting the importance of early social experience for the discrimination behaviour of adults.  相似文献

Summary Direct observations have suggested that the closely related wood ants Formica polyctena and F. rufa represent different social organizations, with high queen number in F. polyctena and a high frequency of monogynous nests in F. rufa. We examined social organization and genetic population structure in a setup where populations of the two species are sympatric and gene flow between the species is possible. Our aim was to compare social organization in the species, and study evolutionary relationships between them. The observed relatedness among colony workers suggested that the difference in the level of polygyny is quantitative rather than qualitative, with a higher queen number in F. polyctena. The observed difference in polygyny was not accompanied by a difference in spatial genetic differentiation which was weak in both species. The genetic distance between the species is consistent with limited interspecific gene flow. Identification of a few possible F. rufa migrants in F. polyctena populations suggests potential interspecific gene flow. Phenytoin was observed to inhibit competitively the sodium dependent high affinity synaptosomal transport of both glutamate (Glu) and -aminobutyric acid (GABA) withK i values of 66±10 and 185±65 M, respectively. This constrasted with a previous report that the uptakes of Glu and GABA were enhanced by phenytoin. The degree of inhibition is dependent on the concentrations of the competing drug and substrate present. Taking the therapeutic levels of phenytoin and the overall brain Glu and GABA contents, the degrees of inhibition obtainble appear to be negligible. However, as most of the high levels of Glu and GABA in the brain are intracellular, Glu, and GABA concentrations in the microenvironment of the uptake sites may be sufficiently small so that the ability of phenytoin to inhibit Glu and GABA transport may contribute significantly to the anticonvulsant property of this drug.  相似文献

The interaction between ants with different levels of social and territorial organization (Formica polyctena, Myrmica rubra, M. ruginodis, M. schencki, Lasius niger, and Formica fusca) was studied in the Ugra National Park (Kaluga Prov., Russia). The behavior of ants competing for an abundant source of food (carbohydrate feeders) was analyzed. It was found that the possibility of ants coexisting in a multi-species association was ensured, in particular, by different strategies of feeding behavior. A species with effective mobilization may achieve a greater competitive success as compared to more aggressive but less effectively mobilizing ones. Species characterized by non-aggressive behavior and ineffective mobilization may ensure their biological success due to an efficient system of foraging.  相似文献

1. Phengaris butterflies are obligatory social parasites of Myrmica ants. Early research suggested that there is a different Myrmica host species for each of the five European Phengaris social parasites, but more recent studies have shown that this was an oversimplification. 2. The pattern of host ant specificity within a Phengaris teleius metapopulation from southern Poland is reported. A combination of studying the frequency distribution of Phengaris occurrence and morphometrics on adult butterflies were used to test whether use of different host species is reflected in larval development. 3. Phengaris teleius larvae were found to survive in colonies of four Myrmica species: M. scabrinodis, M. rubra, M. ruginodis, and M. rugulosa. Myrmica scabrinodis was the most abundant species under the host plant but the percentage of infested nests was similar to other host ant species at two sites and lower in comparison to nests of M. rubra and M. ruginodis at the other two sites. Morphometric measurements of adult butterflies reared by wild colonies of M. scabrinodis and M. ruginodis showed that wing size and number of wing spots were slightly greater for adults eclosing from nests of M. ruginodis. 4. Our results suggest that P. teleius in the populations studied is less specialised than previously suggested. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that P. teleius is expected to be the least specific of the European Phengaris species, as it has the largest and best defended fourth‐instar caterpillars and, as a predatory species, it spends less time in the central larval chambers of the host colonies. The fact that individuals reared by M. ruginodis had wider hind wings may suggest that P. teleius had better access to resources in M. ruginodis than in M. scabrinodis colonies.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on the spontaneous release of endogenous glutamic acid (Glu) or aspartic acid (Asp) and the effects of Glu on the release of endogenous GABA or [3H]GABA were studied in superfused rat cerebral cortex synaptosomes. GABA increased the outflow of Glu (EC5017.2 μM) and Asp (EC50 18.4 μM). GABA was not antagonized by bicuculline or picrotoxin. Neither muscimol nor (-)-baclofen mimicked GABA. The effects of GABA were prevented by GABA uptake inhibitors and were Na+ dependent. Glu enhanced the release of [3H]GABA (EC50 11.5 μM) from cortical synaptosomes. Glu was not mimicked by the glutamate receptor agonists N-methyl-d -aspartic, kainic, or quisqualic acid. The Glu effect was decreased by the Glu uptake inhibitor D-threo-hydroxyaspartic acid (THA) and it was Na+ sensitive. Similarly to Glu, D-Asp increased [3H]GABA release (EC50 9.9 μM), an effect blocked by THA. Glu also increased the release of endogenous GABA from cortex synaptosomes. In this case the effect was in part blocked by the (RS)-α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor antagonist 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaiine-2, 3-dione, whereas the 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline- 2, 3-dione-insensitive portion of the effect was prevented by THA. GABA increased the [3H]D-Asp outflow (EC50 13.7 μM) from hippocampal synaptosomes in a muscimol-, (-)- baclofen-, bicuculline-, and picrotoxin-insensitive manner. The GABA effect was abolished by blocking GABA uptake and was Na+ dependent. Glu increased the release of [3H]- GABA from hippocampal synaptosomes (EC50 7.1 μM) in an N-methyl-d -aspartic acid-, kainic acid-, or quisqualic acid-insensitive way. The effect of Glu was prevented by THA and was Na+ dependent. As in the cortex, the effect of Glu was mimicked by D-Asp in a THA-sensitive manner. It is proposed that high-affinity GABA or Glu heterocarriers are sited respectively on glutamatergic or GA- BAergic nerve terminals in rat cerebral cortex and hippocampus. The uptake of GABA may modulate Glu and Asp release, whereas the uptake of Glu may modulate the release of GABA. The existence of these heterocarriers is in keeping with the reported colocalization of GABA and Glu in some cortical and hippocampal neurons. Preliminary data suggest that these mechanisms may also be present in rat cerebellum and spinal cord.  相似文献

Maculinea butterflies are social parasites of Myrmica ants. Methods to study the strength of host ant specificity in the MaculineaMyrmica association include research on chemical and acoustic mimicry as well as experiments on ant adoption and rearing behaviour of Maculinea larvae. Here we present results of laboratory experiments on adoption, survival, development and integration of M. teleius larvae within the nests of different Myrmica host species, with the objective of quantifying the degree of specialization of this Maculinea species. In the laboratory, a total of 94 nests of four Myrmica species: M. scabrinodis, M. rubra, M. ruginodis and M. rugulosa were used. Nests of M. rubra and M. rugulosa adopted M. teleius larvae more readily and quickly than M. ruginodis colonies. No significant differences were found in the survival rates of M. teleius larvae reared by different ant species. Early larval growth of M. teleius larvae differed slightly among nests of four Myrmica host species. Larvae reared by colonies of M. rugulosa which were the heaviest at the beginning of larval development had the lowest mean larval body mass after 18 weeks compared to those reared by other Myrmica species. None of the M. teleius larvae was carried by M. scabrinodis or M. rubra workers after ant nests were destroyed, which suggests a lack of integration with host colonies. Results indicate that Myrmica species coming from the same site differ in their ability to adopt and rear M. teleius larvae but there was no obvious adaptation of this butterfly species to one of the host ant species. This may explain why, under natural conditions, all four ants can be used as hosts of this butterfly species. Slight advantages of particular Myrmica species as hosts at certain points in butterfly larval development can be explained by the ant species biology and colony structure rather than by specialization of M. teleius.  相似文献

Reproduction is a key factor in understanding population ecology and therefore species occurrence. However, patterns in reproductive behaviour for distinct ant species remain insufficiently known. In this paper strategies in mate finding are studied for six ant species (Lasius niger, Lasius umbratus, Temnothorax nylanderi, Myrmica rubra, Myrmica ruginodis, Stenamma debile) in a forest – forest edge – agricultural field gradient. Using window traps, we studied whether these species had a restricted nuptial flight season, displayed swarming behaviour, and whether the alates aggregated at the forest edge. The flight season was limited to one month or less for L. niger, T. nylanderi, M. rubra, M. ruginodis and S. debile. Swarming behaviour occurred in all but one (L. umbratus) species. Although none of the six species seemed to have highest nest density at the forest edge, three of them, M. rubra, M. ruginodis and S. debile, showed male aggregations there, indicating this to be the main reproduction site. This last finding could be due to a more suitable micro-climate, but most likely, edges are conspicuous land marks which are used by ants to meet mates. The behavioural patterns of ant sexuals at the forest edge can influence dispersal possibilities in fragmented landscapes, reproductive success and nest densities. —The uptake of [U-14C]glutamate into the amphibian brain was studied in vitro using brains from toads (Bufo boreas) adapted either to a fresh water (FWA) or an hyperosmotic saline (HOA) environment. Initial rates of 14C-glutamate uptake showed a single apparent Km of about 0·2 mm . Uptake by HOA brains was slower than that by FWA brains, reflecting perhaps a non-competitive type of inhibition by the higher content of glutamate in the HOA brains. Although the glutamate content of HOA brains was maintained during prolonged incubation at twice the level found in FWA toads, other metabolic parameters measured in the two types of brain preparations were surprisingly similar. Tissue to medium concentration ratios of greater than 3000:1 were generated by both FWA and HOA brains. In both brain systems the clearance of glutamate from the medium was accompanied by a rapid conversion of the amino acid to glutamine and its release into the medium. In both the FWA and HOA toad brain systems some [U-14C]glutamate was metabolized to aspartate and GABA; in both systems the specific radioactivity (SA) of glutamine in the tissue was from two to four times greater than that of glutamate; also the SA of glutamine released into the medium was higher by several orders of magnitude than the SA of glutamine in brain tissues. These and other findings support the concept that, in both the FWA and HOA toad brains, transport processes are instrumental in preserving low extracellular levels of glutamate but that mechanisms other than transport are responsible for the maintenance of different levels of glutamate in the FWA and HOA toad brains.  相似文献

Brain levels of y-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate and 2-oxoglutarate, activities of glutamate decarboxylase GABA-transaminase plus succinic semiaidehyde dehydrogenase and blood levels of glutamate and 2-oxoglutarate were determined in normal, thiamine-deprived, oxythiamine-treated and pyrithiamine-treated rats. Brain GABA levels were significantly reduced in thiamine-deprived and pyrithiamine-treated rats, but the activities of the enzymes of the GABA shunt pathway were not affected. Brain levels of glutamate were decreased and of 2-oxoglutarate increased in all three types of deficiency. This was associated with similar decreases in glutamate and increases in 2-oxoglutarate in the blood in all three deficient groups. Intraventricular injections of 2-[U-14C] oxoglutarate into the brain in these four groups of rats resulted in some significant differences in distribution of 14C in various TCA-pathway intermediates and satellite compounds in the brain. Increases in 14C-label were observed for glutamine and 2-oxoglutarate in all three deficient groups as compared to controls. The 14C content of succinate, fumarate and aspartate was decreased in the thiamine deprived and PTh-treated groups and [14C]glutamate was decreased in all three deficient groups. The 14C content of GABA was not significantly affected.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of local perfusion with the glutamate receptor agonist NMDA and the noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist dizolcipine (MK-801) on extracellular dopamine (DA), GABA, and glutamate (Glu) levels in the dorsolateral striatum were monitored using in vivo microdialysis in the halothane-anesthetized rat. In addition, the sensitivity of both the basal and NMDA-induced increases in levels of these neurotransmitter substances to perfusion with tetrodotoxin (TTX; 10?5 M) and a low Ca2+ concentration (0.1 mM) was studied. The results show that the local perfusion (10 min) with both the 10?3 and 10?4 M dose of NMDA increased striatal DA and GABA outflow, whereas only the (10?3 M) dose of NMDA was associated with a small and delayed increase in extracellular Glu levels. The NMDA-induced effects were dose-dependently counteracted by simultaneous perfusion with MK-801 (10?6 and 10?5 M). Both the basal and NMDA (10?3 M)-induced increase in extracellular striatal DA content was reduced in the presence of TTX and a low Ca2+ concentration, whereas both basal and NMDA-stimulated GABA levels were unaffected by these treatments. Both the basal and NMDA-stimulated Glu levels were enhanced following TTX treatment, whereas perfusion with a low Ca2+ concentration reduced basal Glu levels and enhanced and prolonged the NMDA-induced stimulation. These data support the view that NMDA receptor stimulation plays a role in the regulation of extracellular DA, GABA, and Glu levels in the dorsolateral neostriatum and provide evidence for a differential effect of NMDA receptor stimulation on these three striatal neurotransmitter systems, possibly reflecting direct and indirect actions mediated via striatal NMDA receptors.  相似文献

The mandibular glands of the two species of ant, Myrmica ruginodis and Myrmica sabuleti contain a similar mixture of compounds, but the proportions are different. M. sabuleti produces ethanol, propanone, methylpropanal, 3-hexanone, 3-hexanol, 3-heptanone, 3-heptanol, 3-octanone, 3-octanol, 6-methyl-3-octanone, 6-methyl-3-octanol and 3-decanone. With the exception of 3-decanone these compounds were also found in M. ruginodis. These compounds were also found in M. rubra and M. scabrinodis.In both species now studied, the mandibular gland contents attract the workers and cause a large increase in their linear speed. In M. sabuleti these behavioural activities are due to 3-octanone and 3-octanol: the attraction of these two compounds in a synthetic mixture is exactly like that of an isolated mandibular gland; the compounds act in synergy to cause an increase in the ants' linear speed. Workers of M. ruginodis specifically respond to a mixture of ethanol, 3-octanone and 3-octanol: the alcohol only moderates the ethological action of the ketone, which is a true attractant and causes a very large increase in the ants' velocity; ethanol also attracts workers, acting in this respect in synergy with 3-octanone.These chemical and behavioural results are combined with those previously reported (Cammaerts-Tricot, 1973; Morganet al., 1978) to explain the responses of M. rubra, M. ruginodis, M. sabuleti and M. scabrinodis workers to isolated mandibular glands from each of these four species.  相似文献

A method to estimate the number of workers in Myrmica ant nests on abandoned meadows was developed based on removal of workers. Ant workers have a tendency to climb up on wooden sticks put into their nests, therefore, assuming that the number of workers removed on sticks is related to the total number of workers within the nests, regression models for Myrmica rubra, M. ruginodis and M. scabrinodis may be built. We used a general regression model to perform a backward stepwise elimination of explanatory variables. These were the number of workers removed on sticks, temperature at the nest and site (a categorical variable). In case of each species the final model contained only the number of workers removed as a significant variable. The method is apparently non-destructive as we did not observe decreased survival of nests surveyed as compared to control nests. The method can be a very useful tool in population studies of ants as well as in biodiversity projects, where ants are used as bioinidcators. Summary

Carbohydrate food is of high importance for survival of ant colonies. Ants are known to use sugary excretions (honeydew) of various insects, nectar of floral and extrafloral nectaries, and even sap of some trees. However, the ability of ants to use sap of herbaceous plants has not been mentioned. This is the first evidence that ants of the genus Myrmica can intentionally ‘cut off’ young cereal sprouts to obtain plant sap. The investigation was carried out in a laboratory in 2018 and 2019 and involved three ant species of the genus Myrmica [12 colonies of M. rubra (Linnaeus, 1758); eight colonies of M. ruginodis Nylander, 1846; and five colonies of M. scabrinodis Nylander, 1846]. First observations were made occasionally in 10 ant colonies during the study of ant–aphid interactions. After three days of carbohydrate starvation, ants were supplied with the plants of wheat infested with aphids of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani, 1852). Within the first day in addition to ordinary trophobiotic relations with aphids, the workers of all the studied colonies demonstrated unexpected behaviour: they ‘cut off’ some sprouts and collected sap of these plants. The experimental investigation in 15 ant colonies of various sizes (about 150, 300 and 500 workers) supplied with the plants infested or non-infested with aphids has shown that getting sap of herbs depends greatly on ant colony needs and available resources. The number of damaged plants was much higher both in the larger colonies of ants and in the absence of aphids. This way of getting carbohydrates allows ants to quickly obtain some extra food needed to maintain colony viability and seems to be one of the mechanisms promoting survival of ants in conditions of acute carbohydrate deficiency. We describe the behavioral interactions between honeydew-collecting workers of the ants Lasius nigerand Myrmica ruginodisand females of three species of aphidiid wasps (Lysiphlebus cardui, Lysiphlebus testaceipes, Trioxys angelicae)foraging for their aphid host, Aphis fabaessp. cirsiiacanthoidis,on thistles. Using field and laboratory experiments, we show that the ant-parasitoid interactions are species specific. Workers of both ant species generally attacked and killed females of T. angelicae,but they ignored those of L. cardui.This pattern was not altered when we anesthetized the wasps slightly with carbon dioxide to reduce their mobility. Prior contacts between L. carduiand either conspecific L. nigerfrom a different nest or workers of a different ant species (M. ruginodis)did not influence L. niger'snonaggressive behavior. The number of aphids parasitized by L. testaceipeswas significantly reduced in aphid colonies attended by L. niger,although this parasitoid was rarely attacked by ants. In encounters between these species of ants and wasps, ant aggression is consistent with differences in wasp behavior. We suggest that, in addition, chemical cues located in the cuticula may enable L. carduito avoid detection by honeydew-collecting ants.  相似文献

The Alcon blue butterfly (Maculinea alcon) parasitizes the nests of several Myrmica ant species. In Denmark, it uses M. rubra and M. ruginodis, but never M. scabrinodis. To further examine the basis of this specificity and local co-adaptation between host and parasite, the pattern of growth and survival of newly-adopted caterpillars of M. alcon in Myrmica subcolonies was examined in the laboratory. M. alcon caterpillars were collected from three populations differing in their host use, and reared in laboratory nests of all three ant species collected from each M. alcon population. While there were differences in the pattern of growth of caterpillars from different populations during the first few months after adoption, which depended on host ant species and the site from which the ants were collected, there was no evidence of major differences in final size achieved. Survival was, however, much higher in nests of M. rubra than in nests of M. ruginodis and M. scabrinodis, even for caterpillars from a population that is never known to use M. rubra as a host in the field. The caterpillars of M. alcon thus do not show local adaptation in their pattern of growth and survival, but instead show a pattern that may reflect different nestmate recognition abilities of the host ants, related to their sociogenetic organisation. The pattern of observed host ant use in the field seems to result from a combination of differences in local host availability and locally adapted infectivity, modulated by smaller differences in survivorship in the nests of the different host ants.  相似文献

Ant queens exhibit two primary strategies to initiate nests, independent colony founding (ICF) by solitary queens and dependent colony founding (DCF) when the queen starts a nest with a group of workers that disperse on foot from the parent nest. Numerous ant species have wingless (ergatoid) queens, and it is generally assumed that these species exhibit obligate DCF because their lack of wing musculature provides them with few resources to divert towards producing their first brood of workers. Thus, ICF by ergatoid queens is viewed as maladaptive because these queens need to take additional dangerous foraging trips to garner sufficient food to rear their first brood of workers. Contrary to this prediction, I document ICF by ergatoid queens for three species of harvester ants in the genus Pogonomyrmex (subfamily Myrmicinae), P. cunicularius cunicularius, P. cunicularius pencosensis, and P. huachucanus. Queens of P. huachucanus were obligate foragers, i.e., no minim workers could be produced without external food, and one queen of P. cunicularius pencosensis was observed foraging in the field. Abundant and/or predictable food resources likely select for the evolution of semi-claustral nest founding and ICF by these ergatoid queens. Under these conditions, foraging time would be minimized and the number and size of minim workers would be maximized. These benefits should increase founding success, which could compensate for loss of long-range dispersal. Overall, this study demonstrates that care should be taken before concluding that ant colonies employ DCF based solely on queen morphology.  相似文献
