Spatial separation within predator communities can arise via territoriality but also from competitive interactions among and within species. However, linking competitive interactions to predator distribution patterns is difficult and theoretical models predict different habitat selection patterns dependent on habitat quality and how competition manifests itself. While models generally consider competitors to be either equal in ability, or for one phenotype to have a fixed advantage over the other, few studies consider that an animal may only have a competitive advantage in specific habitats. We used  10 years of telemetry data, habitat surveys and behavioral experiments, to show spatial partitioning between and within two species of reef shark (grey reef Carcharhinus amblyrhinchos and blacktip reef sharks C. melanopterus) at an unfished Pacific atoll. Within a species, sharks remained within small ‘sub‐habitats’ with very few movements of individuals between sub‐habitats, which previous models have suggested could be caused by intra‐specific competition. Blacktip reef sharks were more broadly distributed across habitat types but a greater proportion used lagoon and backreef habitats, while grey reef sharks preferred forereef habitats. Grey reef sharks at a nearby atoll where blacktip reef sharks are absent, were distributed more broadly between habitat types than when both species were present. A series of individual‐based models predict that habitat separation would only arise if there are competitive interactions between species that are habitat‐specific, with grey reefs having a competitive advantage on the forereefs and blacktips in the lagoons and backreef. We provide compelling evidence that competition helps drive distribution patterns and spatial separation of a marine predator community, and highlight that competitive advantages may not be constant but rather dependent on habitats.  相似文献

Populus nigra L. var betulifolia and Salix alba L. var alba are early successional riparian tree species threatened throughout Continental Europe by significant changes to the natural physical processes governing their natural habitat – geomorphologically active floodplains. River management activities have dramatically altered natural patterns of river flow and rates of sediment delivery along rivers, with possible consequences for the balance between sexual and asexual regeneration strategies in these species. Conservation strategies will benefit from a greater understanding of the ways in which dynamic physical processes on the floodplain influence sexual and asexual recruitment. This paper describes a field survey investigating the relative abundance and spatial distributions of P. nigra and S. alba sexual and asexual recruits during the first years of establishment along a braided gravel bed river. Sexual and asexual recruits were identified by excavation along transects in a wet and a dry field season and distributional differences were described in terms of elevation on the floodplain, local sediment type and exposure to floodwaters. Regeneration was overwhelmingly from seed in the first 2–3 years following recruitment, but poor survival rates among sexual recruits saw a shift in the relative abundance of regeneration strategies over time. In relating hydrological data to recruitment, unseasonal flood disturbances had a negative effect on recruitment from seed and a positive effect on vegetative regeneration. Seedlings were associated with fine sediment deposits and were restricted primarily to low elevations on the flood plain, while asexual recruits had a wider spatial distribution. Certain microsite types were unique to either regeneration strategy.  相似文献

Lepidodactylus lugubris, a parthenogenetic gekkonid lizard of possible tropical origin, occurs on Kita-Daitojima Island of the Ryukyu Archipelago and lays eggs almost throughout the year. The oviposition season of the sympatric population of another primary tropical, but bisexual gecko,Hemidactylus frenatus, is confined to between April and September. Laboratory experiments indicate that the hatching ratio of the egg reduces with the decrease of incubation temperature in both species. Some eggs ofL. lugubris develop at 14°C of ambient temperature, wheras eggs ofH. frenatus always die at temperatures of 18°C or lower. Examinations of stomach contents and fat body mass in the monthly samples suggest that food availability is not severely low for the geckos even during the winter, rejecting the previous assumption that food stress suppresses vitellogenesis inH. frenatus. No other environmental factors that may induce reproductive seasonality as phenotypic physiological responses were detected either. Tropical populations ofH. frenatus andL. lugubris are known to lack distinct annual reproductive cyclicity. Thus, it is probable that the East AsianH. frenatus has evolved the winter quiescence of reproduction, presumably due to the poor embryonic tolerance of low temperatures. The absence of such seasonality in the sympatricL. lugubris seems to be attributable to its clonal nature which predicts the low genetic variability of the population from the colonization stage.  相似文献

We present 16 variable dinucleotide microsatellite markers to quantify genetic variation in the parthenogenetic gecko, Lepidodactylus lugubris. Genetic diversity at these loci was unusually high for an asexual species. Subsets of individuals produced identical genotypes across all loci. Individual loci revealed evidence of polyploidy and marked differences between observed and expected heterozygosity, indicating the presence of null alleles. These patterns conform to prior expectations based on the distant genetic relationships between the presumed sexual progenitors of L. lugubris. Comparisons with sexual relatives will be required to determine the sources of the observed genetic variation.  相似文献

The geographical distribution of sexual and related asexual species has been suggested to correlate with habitat stability; sexual species tend to be in stable habitats (K‐selection), whereas related asexual taxa tend to be in unstable habitats (r‐selection). We test whether this broad‐scale pattern can be re‐created at a microevolutionary scale by experimentally evolving populations of facultatively sexual rotifers under different ecological conditions. Consistent with the pattern in nature, we find that the rate of sex evolves to lower levels in the r‐selected than in K‐selection environments. We consider several different explanations for these results.  相似文献

Summary Clavispora opuntiae was the prevalent yeast associated with the feeding sites ofSigelgaita sp. larvae in the cactusPilosocereus arrabidae. Also associated with this habitat wereCandida sonorensis, Pichia cactophila, Pichia barkeri, Candida sp. A,Geotrichum sp.,Geotrichum sericeum and the yeast like organismsPrototheca zopfii andAcremonium sp. Atypical yeast biotypes that may represent new species ofPichia, Sporopachydermia andCandida were isolated. Mating types ofClavispora opuntiae were at a ratio 70 h+ to 3 h- and reduced levels of sporulation suggested low pressure for sexual reproduction in this habitat.Sigelgaita sp. probably was not an important vector forClavispora opuntiae because it was not isolated from an adult or eggs of this moth.  相似文献

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) encode molecules that control immune recognition and are highly polymorphic in most vertebrates. The remarkable polymorphisms at MHC loci may be maintained by selection from parasites, sexual selection, or both. If asexual species show equal (or higher) levels of polymorphisms at MHC loci as sexual ones, this would mean that sexual selection is not necessary to explain the high levels of diversity at MHC loci. In this study, we surveyed the MHC diversity of the asexual amazon molly (Poecilia formosa) and one of its sexual ancestors, the sailfin molly (P. latipinna), which lives in the same habitat. We found that the asexual molly has polymorphic MHC loci despite its clonal reproduction, yet not as polymorphic as the sexual species. Although the nucleotide diversity was similar between the asexual and sexual species, the sexual species exhibited a greater genotypic diversity compared to the asexual one from the same habitats. Within‐genome diversity was similar for MHC class I loci, but for class IIB, the sexual species had higher diversity compared to the asexual — despite the hybrid origins and higher levels of heterozygosity at microsatellite loci in the asexual species. The level of positive selection appears to be similar between the two species, which suggests that these polymorphisms are maintained by selection. Thus, our findings do not allow us to rule out the sexual selection hypothesis for the evolution of MHC diversity, and although the sexual fish has higher levels of MHC‐diversity compared to the asexual species, this may be due to differences in demography, parasites, or other factors, rather than sexual selection.  相似文献

Where sexual and asexual forms coexist within a species, the asexuals are often found to be prevalent in marginal habitats. This asexual distribution pattern has received evolutionary attention linked to the paradox of sex. In many marine species, there is a distributional trend of asexual modes being more common in lower salinity waters regarded as the ecogeographic marginal, being explained by negative effects of low salinities on sexual reproductive success. However, the distribution pattern of estuarine species recently adapted to low salinity waters has remained unknown. The brackish macroalga Ulva prolifera being a major benthic component of estuarine ecosystems includes a sexual variant and obligate asexual variants by means of motile spores. We examined the sexual–asexual distribution pattern of this alga along a salinity gradient in river estuaries. Surprisingly, opposite to the distributional trend of marine organisms, the results clearly showed the persistent predominance of sexuals in the lower salinity reaches than the asexuals. In addition, a frequent alternating of dioecious gametophytes and sporophytes in the sexual population was observed, suggesting the sexual reproductive process would be robustly performed in the low salinity waters. Considering U. prolifera had evolved from the ancestral marine species to become a true estuarine species of which the core habitat is the low salinity reaches, in a broad sense its sexual–asexual distribution pattern would be involved in asexual marginal occupations of the species range previously reported in other organisms. Based on the frozen niche variation model, we can give a concise explanation for the evolutionary process of this pattern; multiple asexuals with frozen genotypic variation had arisen from sexual ancestors undergoing low salinity adaptation and share the estuarine habitat with the sexuals at present.  相似文献

Across the Pacific the invading gecko species Hemidactylus frenatus has competitively displaced the resident gecko species Lepidodactylus lugubris in urban/surburban habitats. Do parasites enhance, inhibit, orhave no effect on this invasion? Parasites can confer an advantage to an invading species when the invader (1) introduces a new parasite to a resident species that has a greater detrimental effect on the resident than the invader, (2) is less susceptible to endemic parasites than the resident, and/or (3) increases the susceptibility of the resident to parasites. Conversely, parasites may protect a resident against invasion when endemic parasites have a greater impact on the invader than the resident. We screened more than one thousand H. frenatus and L. lugubris in areas of sympatry and allopatry from 28 islands and 5 sites on mainland Asia for a broad array of blood parasites, coccidia and helminths in order to evaluate the potential for parasites to affect their interaction. We found that 1) There were no parasites which appear to protect L. lugubris against invasion by H. frenatus. 2) H. frenatus does not introduce the same parasite to L. lugubris in every location where the two come in to contact, but probably has introduced different parasites in different locations. L. lugubris also seems to have introduced at least one parasite to H. frenatus. 3) The prevalence of parasite species shared by the two hosts is generally higher in H. frenatus; however, prevalence is determined by many factors and cannot be directly translated as susceptibility. We discuss the implications of this difference in prevalence for the Red Queen hypothesis. 4) The prevalence of the cestode Cylindrotaenia sp. is significantly higher in L. lugubris that are sympatric with H. frenatus than those which are allopatric.  相似文献

Leptographium species have predominantly been described from North America, Canada and Europe. These fungi generally occur on conifers and many cause blue-stain of lumber. MostLeptographium species are also associated with insects and in particular, bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). Recently, an unknown species ofLeptographium was isolated from pine infested with anIps sp. in Indonesia. In addition, two unknown species have been collected from red spruce (Picea rubra) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea) roots from high elevation sites in Eastern North America. The latter isolates are unusual in that they are associated with the feeding wounds made by the conifer swift mothKorscheltellus gracilus (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae), which is a habitat unique for species ofLeptographium. Comparison with knownLeptographium species has revealed that the isolates from Indonesia and those from Eastern North America represent three previously undescribed taxa. They are, therefore, described in this study asL. pineti sp. nov,L. abieticolens sp. nov. andL. peucophilum sp. nov.  相似文献

According to the Red Queen hypothesis for sex, parasite‐mediated selection against common clones counterbalances the reproductive advantage of asexual lineages, which would otherwise outcompete sexual conspecifics. Such selection on the clonal population is expected to lead to a faster clonal turnover in habitats where selection by parasites is stronger. We tested this prediction by comparing the genetic structure of clonal and sexual populations of freshwater snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum between years 2003 and 2007 in three depth‐specific habitats in Lake Alexandrina (South Island, New Zealand). These habitats differ in the risk of infection by castrating trematodes and in the relative proportion of sexual individuals. As predicted, we found that the clonal structure changed significantly in shallow and mid‐water habitats, where prevalence of infection was high, but not in the deep habitat, where parasite prevalence was low. Additionally, we found that both clonal diversity and evenness of the asexual population declined in the shallow habitat. In contrast, the genetic structure (based on F–statistics) of the coexisting sexual population did not change, which suggests that the change in the clonal structure cannot be related to genetic changes in the sexual population. Finally, the frequency of sexuals had no effect on the diversity of the sympatric clonal population. Taken together, our results show a more rapid clonal turnover in high‐infection habitats, which gives support for the Red Queen hypothesis for sex.  相似文献

Summary Queens ofLasius flavus (F.) andL. niger (L.) were observed to choose sunlit bare areas for colony foundation and shading was found to reduce their success in founding colonies. Large colonies of these species killed queens of the opposite species first thus favouring the co-existence brought about by their habitat selection.  相似文献

Two new pythiaceous fungi were obtained from decaying leaves submerged in saltmarsh environments of the east coast of the U.S.A., or fringing mangroves in the Bahama Islands, and are described here asHalophytophthora tartarea andH. masteri. The two species have superficially similar zoosporangia whose dehiscence tubes have ragged-looking apices. However, differences in fine structures and development of the dehiscence tube and plug, characteristics of the dehiscence plugs, and presence or absence of vesicles clearly distinguish the two species.Halophytophthora masteri is the only species ofHalophytophthora that has a zoospore release mechanism involving both an extruded plug and a vesicle. Cultural properties concerning growth and asexual reproduction at various salinities and temperatures are also different between the two, probably reflecting adaptation to their respective habitats. Though zoospore release inH. masteri occurs spontaneously from mature zoosporangia, it is remarkably enhanced inH. tartarea and alsoH. masteri by mildly dehydrating mature zoosporangia followed by rewetting with seawater, which suggests a possible relation between the asexual reproduction of these oomycetes and the tidal rhythm in their natural habitats.  相似文献

Summary In central Portugal, 28 species of ants were found in oak, 25 in pine, 35 in eucalyptus and 12 in arable habitats, a total of 43 species. They include five numerically dominant species, the exotic Argentine ant.Linepithema (Iridomyrmex) humile and four native species,Crematogaster scutellaris, Pheidole pallidula, Tapinoma nigerrimum andTetramorium hispanicum. L. humile occurred in 34% of sampled sites. When present, it was abundant in all three arboreal habitats, where it was associated with strikingly decreased ant species richness and equitability. Such diversity was greater inL. humile-colonised arable habitats, where the ant was much less abundant than in the arboreal habitats.WhereL. humile was absent,C. scutellaris andP. pallidula were usually co-dominants in oak and pine, andT. nigerrimum andT. hispanicum in the arable habitat, but all were absent or rare in eucalyptus. Ants were numerically least abundant in eucalyptus but, in the absence ofL. humile, species richness was greater and the community more equitable than in the other habitats.L. humile-absent arable habitats supported the poorest and least equitable ant community.  相似文献

Laboratory observations on reared life stages of Chironex fleckeri (Cubozoa: Chirodropidae) have been combined with field sampling and observations to outline the life cycle of the species and the spatial and temporal distribution of populations in Queensland, Australia. A seasonal alternation of polypoid and medusoid generations from winter to summer respectively is accompanied by a shift in preferred habitat from tidal estuaries to the open eulittoral zone. The system appears to be constrained by predictable fluctuations in the suitability of the alternate habitats to their resident generations. Observations on behaviour, feeding, physiological tolerances, and sexual and asexual reproduction provide insights into the adaptiveness of this pattern.  相似文献

We sampled lagoon, river and forest stream habitats during the rising water, wet, falling water, and dry seasons in the lowland region of the Yasuni National Reserve in the Ecuadorian Amazon. We collected 195 species, increasing the current number of species for the Napo River basin to approximately 562. The steady rate of species accumulation per sample suggests that the fish fauna is still undersampled. Lagoon, river and forest stream fish communities are highly diverse and variable, composed of common species found within several habitats, of characteristic species found throughout the year, and of seasonally migrating species. Characteristic lagoon species were mainly the curimatids Curimata vittata, Psectrogaster amazonica, Potamorhina altamazonica, P. latior and Cyphocharax plumbeus. The characins Hyphessobrycon copelandi and Hemigrammus cf. lunatus and the catfishes Nemadoras humeralis, Pimelodella sp. C and Sorubim sp. A were characteristic river species. Characteristic forest stream species included Hoplias malabaricus, Hyphessobrycon copelandi, Pimelodella sp. B and Sternopyugus macrurus. During the dry season, lagoon and river habitats had the highest number of individuals and species, as fishes were concentrated in decreasing habitat area. In contrast, stream habitats had the highest species richness and abundance during the rising water and falling water seasons. Species collected included vital food fishes and seasonal migrants. The migratory catfishes Brachyplatystoma vaillantii, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, Platynematichthys notatus, Platystomatichthys sturio and Sorubim lima were collected during the falling water season, which suggests that these species may begin migrating earlier than expected. These findings highlight the importance of seasonality for both adequately assessing aquatic biodiversity and for developing research and conservation programs encompassing whole river ecosystems.  相似文献

Larvae and juveniles ofLateolabrax japonicus andL. latus occurred from January to May 1986 in the shallow waters of the Shimanto estuary.L. japonicus markedly outnumberedL. latus. Distinct ecological differences were recognized in habitats and food habits between the two species:L. japonicus mainly inhabited eelgrass beds composed ofZostera nana, whileL. latus appeared evenly in both eelgrass beds and non-eelgrass habitats; the former fed on copepods and cladocerans, while the latter fed on copepods and fish larvae. From these habitat and food habit analyses, estuaries were considered to be important as a main habitat forL. japonicus, but not forL. latus. The fact that ecological differences have occurred during the early life stages was inferred to be one of the possible keys to speculate on the speciation of the two species.  相似文献

Aggregation pheromones for sevenCarpophilus (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) species were field tested at a site with a rich nitidulid fauna in Ohio, USA, during the summers of 1992 and 1993. The pheromones used were blends identified for:Carpophilus antiquus (Melsheimer),C. brachypterus (Say),C. freemani Dobson, C. hemipterus (L.),C. lugubris Murray,C. mutilatus Erichson, andC. obsoletus Erichson. Each pheromone was used in conjunction with whole wheat bread dough, an effective co-attractant. The pheromone ofC. brachypterus Say was identified during the course of this study and was also tested; males emitted a 100:6:11:4:3 blend of (2E, 4E, 6E, 8E)-3, 5, 7-trimethyl-2, 4, 6, 8-decatetraene, (2E, 4E, 6E, 8E)-3, 5, 7-trimethyl-2, 4, 6, 8-undecatetraene, (2E, 4E, 6E, 8E)-7-ethyl-3, 5-dimethyl-2, 4, 6, 8-decatetraene, (3E, 5E, 7E, 9E)-4, 6, 8-trimethyl-3, 5, 7, 9-undecatetraene and (2E, 4E, 6E, 8E)-7-ethyl-3, 5-dimethyl-2, 4, 6, 8-undecatetraene, respectively. All species responded favorably to their own pheromones with the exception ofC. obsoletus, which was not present in this area. Strong mutual cross attraction was observed betweenC. brachypterus andC. hemipterus. In addition,C. lugubris responded to the pheromones ofC. obsoletus andC. hemipterus and, more weakly, to those ofC. freemani andC. brachypterus; C. freemani responded slightly to the pheromone ofC. multilatus; andC. antiquus responded to the pheromone ofC. lugubris. In most cases, cross attraction was related to the species involved sharing pheromone components. ForC. antiquus, however, the response to theC. lugubris pheromone was apparently kairomonalC. corticinus, C. marginatus, C. marginellus, andC. sayi, for which pheromones are not known, were attracted to the pheromone ofC. lugubris and in some cases to other pheromones. Significant numbers ofColopterus spp. responded to the blends forC. lugubris, C. hemipterus, C. brachypterus, and probably,C. obsoletus.  相似文献

Individuals of two species in the reef goby genus Gnatholepis ( G. anjerensis and G. scapulostigma) were sampled from across the South Pacific, including the Society Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Cook Islands, and Fiji. The two species examined differ in habitat preference, with one (G. anjerensis) preferring shallow, lagoon habitats, and the other (G. scapulostigma) usually occupying habitats outside the lagoons. Partial sequence of the mitochondrial ND2 gene (451–483 base pairs) was determined for 267 individuals and analyzed for demographic structure, population structuring, and correlation of population structure with geographic distance between populations. Both species exhibit demography characteristic of population expansion in the Pleistocene, approximately 88,000 years ago for G. anjerensis and 237,000 years ago for G. scapulostigma. Comparisons of st indicate more structuring among populations of G. anjerensis than G. scapulostigma, although only G. scapulostigma shows a significant correlation between geographic distance and population divergence. It is postulated that the population expansions in Gnatholepis species are related to Pleistocene fluctuations in sea level, and that the ecology of G. anjerensis populations may contribute to their greater population structuring.Communicated by P.F.
