BackgroundIn France, the prevalence of childhood lead poisoning is becoming rare since the avoidance of lead in paints in 1949 and the gradual replacement of water pipes. Chronic lead toxicity is well known and is well correlated to blood lead concentration.AimHere we report a case of severe lead poisoning occurring in a young female child with a pica behavior.MethodsA blood sample and four environmental samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma- mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Lead concentration, lead isotopes and elemental ratios were compared.ResultsThe determination of 208Pb/206Pb, 206Pb/207Pb and Cd/Pb has allowed us to identify the origin of lead poisoning.Discussion-conclusionThe source of contamination was eliminated and the child benefited from a psychological and medical follow up. Her outcome was positive. This case illustrated the potential interest of the use of elemental and isotopic ratios for clinical practice as the ICP-MS measurement has allowed a quick response and a rapid eviction of the contamination’s source.  相似文献

Macaques are similar to humans both physiologically and behaviorally. In South and Southeast Asia they are also synanthropic, ecologically associated with humans. Synanthropy with humans raises the possibility that macaques come into contact with anthropogenic toxicants, such as lead and mercury, and might be appropriate sentinels for human exposures to certain toxic materials. We measured lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) levels and characterized the stable isotopic compositions of δ15N and δ13C in hair from three groups of free‐ranging macaques at the Swoyambhu temple in Kathmandhu, Nepal, an urban population that has abundant contact with humans. Hair lead levels were significantly higher among young macaques and differed among the three groups of macaques that were sampled. Hair Hg levels were low. No statistical association was found between stable isotopic compositions (δ15N and δ13C) and Pb and Hg levels. Our data did not find evidence that lead levels were associated with diet. We conclude that, in this population of macaques, behavioral and/or physiologic factors may play a significant role in determining exposure to lead. Chemical analysis of hair is a promising, noninvasive technique for determining exposure to toxic elements in free‐ranging nonhuman primates. The fluxes of lead in submerged freshwater angiosperms, mosses and benthic algae were investigated by laboratory and field observations. Laboratory experiments showed that the initial uptake of lead by angiosperm shoots and Navicula sp. was rapid (up to 0.07 mg Pb g?1 dry weight min ?1 from a solution containing 1.0 mg Pb l?1), and over-whelmingly passive. Mosses were especially efficient at sorbing lead from solutions containing less than 1.0 mg Pb l?1 . Rates of uptake increased with rising external concentrations, but decreased with time. Anatomical and morphological characteristics of plant tissues affected metal flux and an epiphytic covering of Navicula (i.e., an Aufwuchs community) sorbed metal and reduced uptake into tissues by a third. Up to 90% of the lead sorbed in the first hour by shoots of Elodea canadensis Michx from a solution containing 1.0 mg Pb l?1 was released within 14 days of transfer into a lead-free medium; 10% was irreversibly bound.Moss monitors placed in Ullswater, a lake with sediments containing up to 26 mg Pb g?1 dry weight, confirmed that the metal is brought into circulation during turbulence, but not in periods of calm. Shoots of Elodea collected from the lake contained up to 0.3 mg g?1 dry weight non-exchangeable lead. Young shoots tended to contain less than older shoots (0.12 compared with 0.3 mg Pb g?1), and leaf more than stem tissues. The fluxes of lead from the environment through Aufwuchs and submerged plants are discussed.  相似文献

From 1960 to 1993, a primary lead smelter operated in the Santo Amaro region, close to Todos os Santos Bay in Brazil, using the classical sinter-roasting process followed by smelting and refining. A high lead content was found in the sediments from Todos os Santos Bay, which has a large circulation and receives the discharge from three rivers. Lead stable isotope ratios provide information about the ore mineralization and can be used to evaluate the origin and fate of the lead pollution. The objective of this study is to identify the isotopic signature of the major effluents of this lead smelter and correlate it with the origin of the galena concentrate that generated it. The X-ray microanalysis confirms that the lead occurs in the slag in the metallic state. The soil has a high lead content (about 0.90%) of oxidized lead. The lead isotopic ratios indicated that the slag isotopic ratios (208Pb/204Pb = 34.8; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.3; 206Pb/204Pb = 15.1) are close to the soil value (208Pb/204Pb = 36.2; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.9; 206Pb/204Pb = 16.4) and both agree with the values for the galena from the Boquira mine region (208Pb/204Pb = 34.6±1.1; 207Pb/204Pb = 15.3±0.4; 206Pb/204Pb = 14.7±0.2). These results indicate that no isotopic fractionation occurred in the roasting-smelting process, therefore the original Boquira isotope ratios can be used as the isotopic signature of the lead dispersed from the Santo Amaro smelter.  相似文献

Microbial community composition and activity were characterized in soil contaminated with lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and hydrocarbons. Contaminant levels were very heterogeneous and ranged from 50 to 16,700 mg of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) kg of soil−1, 3 to 3,300 mg of total Cr kg of soil−1, and 1 to 17,100 mg of Pb kg of soil−1. Microbial community compositions were estimated from the patterns of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA); these were considerably different among the 14 soil samples. Statistical analyses suggested that the variation in PLFA was more correlated with soil hydrocarbons than with the levels of Cr and Pb. The metal sensitivity of the microbial community was determined by extracting bacteria from soil and measuring [3H]leucine incorporation as a function of metal concentration. Six soil samples collected in the spring of 1999 had IC50 values (the heavy metal concentrations giving 50% reduction of microbial activity) of approximately 2.5 mM for CrO42− and 0.01 mM for Pb2+. Much higher levels of Pb were required to inhibit [14C]glucose mineralization directly in soils. In microcosm experiments with these samples, microbial biomass and the ratio of microbial biomass to soil organic C were not correlated with the concentrations of hydrocarbons and heavy metals. However, microbial C respiration in samples with a higher level of hydrocarbons differed from the other soils no matter whether complex organic C (alfalfa) was added or not. The ratios of microbial C respiration to microbial biomass differed significantly among the soil samples (P < 0.05) and were relatively high in soils contaminated with hydrocarbons or heavy metals. Our results suggest that the soil microbial community was predominantly affected by hydrocarbons.  相似文献

The effects of dietary and injected lead (Pb) on organ nonprotein sulfhydryl (NPSH) and glutathione (GSH) concentrations in the chick were studied. Lead acetate·3H2O was administered either in the diet for 3 wk at 2000 ppm Pb or by intraperitoneal (ip) injection of 3-wkold chicks with 52 mg Pb/100 g body wt. In Exp. 1, NPSH concentrations in liver and kidney were increased by both dietary and injected Pb in comparison to chicks not receiving Pb. Thigh muscle NPSH was decreased by injected Pb, whereas dietary Pb had no effect. In Expt. 2, whole blood and plasma NPSH were measured at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 h following ip Pb injection. Both whole blood and plasma NPSH were increased by 30 min. Whole blood NPSH concentrations plateaued at 30 min, and plasma NPSH continued to rise for 2 h. In Expt. 3, injected Pb increased hepatic NPSH, but not GSH concentrations. The ratio of GSH/NPSH was therefore lowered. The incorporation of [1-14C]glycine into hepatic GSH was stimulated by injected Pb. Buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), an inhibitor of GSH synthesis, reduced hepatic NPSH and [14C]glycine incorporation in Pb-treated chicks to below control (non-Pb injected) values. In Expt. 4, dietary Pb fed for 3 wk increased the hepatic concentrations of both NPSH and GSH such that the ratio of GSH/NPSH was unchanged in comparison to chicks not fed Pb. The data suggest that the initial response to acute Pb intoxication may involve a mobilization of nonprotein thiols via the interorgan translocation system for GSH. Such a response would help to maintain adequate levels of GSH in organs crucial to detoxification.  相似文献

Background and aimEnvironmental lead (Pb) exposure damages the lungs and is a risk factor for death from cardiovascular disease. Pb induces toxicity by a mechanism, which involves alteration of the essential elements homeostasis. In this study we compare the effects of salinomycin (Sal), monensin (Mon) and meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) on the concentrations of lead (Pb), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) in the lungs and heart of lead-exposed mice.MethodsSixty days old male ICR mice were divided into five groups: control (Ctrl) – untreated mice obtained distilled water for 28 days; Pb-intoxicated group (Pb) – exposed to 80 mg/kg body weight (BW) Pb(NO3)2 during the first 14 days of the experimental protocol; DMSA-treated (Pb + DMSA) – Pb-exposed mice, subjected to treatment with an average daily dose of 20 mg/kg BW DMSA for two weeks; Monensin-treated (Pb + Mon) – Pb-exposed mice, obtained an average daily dose of 20 mg/kg BW tetraethylammonium salt of monensic acid for 14 days; Pb + Sal - Pb-exposed mice, treated with an average daily dose of 20 mg/kg BW tetraethylammonium salt of salinomycinic acid for two weeks. On the 29th day of the experiment the samples (lungs and heart) were taken for atomic absorption analysis.ResultsThe results revealed that exposure of mice to Pb for 14 days significantly increased the concentration of the toxic metal in both organs and elevated the cardiac concentrations of Ca, Cu and Fe compared to untreated mice. Pb exposure diminished the lung concentrations of Ca and Zn compared to that of untreated controls. DMSA, monensin and salinomycin decreased the concentration of Pb in the lungs and heart. Among the tested chelating agents, only salinomycin restored the cardiac Fe concentration to normal control values.ConclusionThe results demonstrated the potential application of polyether ionophorous antibiotic salinomycin as antidote for treatment of Pb-induced toxicity in the lungs and heart. The possible complexation of the polyether ionophorous antibiotics with Ca(II) and Zn(II), which can diminish the endogenous concentrations of both ions in the lungs should be taken into account.  相似文献

Abstract

Kolkata wetlands are the largest sewage fed wetlands in the world. They have been used for aquaculture since 1960. Geochemical distribution of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Pb, Ni and Al) has been studied in surface sediments using single and sequential extractions techniques. The metal concentrations in sediments were in the following order: Fe>Al> Mn>Zn>Cu> Pb>Cr> Ni, and the average concentrations were 29 μg g?1, 54 μg g?1, 328 μg g?1, 32747 μg g?1, 169 μg g?1, 38 μg g?1, 25 μg g?1 and 23371 μg g?1 dry weights for Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Pb, Ni and Al, respectively. Water-soluble percentages of the trace elements are quite low (<0.01–3.75%) but in the presence of chelating agents in the sediments increase the bioavailability of trace elements (2–58%). About 40% of trace elements are in the stable form as a residual fraction of the sediment and more than 50% (nonresidual fraction) metal contamination of the Kolkata wetland sediments were from anthropogenic inputs. The contamination risks of Cr, Mn, Zn, Pb, and Ni are high as their potential availabilities are 70.96%, 58.01%, 63.13%, 55.62%, and 52.15% respectively. The mean concentration of most of the heavy metals in sediments does not exceed the recommended reference values. Zinc and lead concentrations were greater than background level and Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines but lower than Probable Effect Level. Therefore a regular program for monitoring the distribution of heavy metals in water, sediments and biota should be imposed on sewage fed fish ponds of the Kolkata wetland ecosystem.  相似文献

Environmental microorganisms have been widely applied in heavy metal remediation. This study explored the mechanisms of lead tolerance of two typical filamentous fungi, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium oxalicum. It is shown that the mechanisms of reducing Pb toxicity by these two fungi have three major pathways. The secreted oxalic acid can react with Pb (II) to form insoluble Pb minerals, primarily lead oxalate. Then, the enhanced biosorption via forming new border of cell wall prevents the transportation of Pb (II) into hypha. In addition, the fungal activity could be maintained even at high Pb concentration due to the intracellular accumulation. It was confirmed that A. niger has the higher Pb tolerance (up to 1500 mg l−1 Pb level) compared with P. oxalicum (up to 1000 mg l−1). Meanwhile, Pb levels below 1000 mg l−1 partially stimulate the bioactivity of A. niger, which was confirmed by its elevated respiration (from 53 to 63 mg C l−1 medium h−1). This subsequently enhanced microbial functions of A. niger to resist Pb toxicity. A better understanding of Pb tolerance of these two fungi sheds a bright future of applying them to remediate lead-contaminated environments.  相似文献

Coronopus didymus was examined in terms of its ability to remediate Pb-contaminated soils. Pot experiments were conducted for 4 and 6 weeks to compare the growth, biomass, photosynthetic efficiency, lead (Pb) uptake, and accumulation by C. didymus plants. The plants grew well having no visible toxic symptoms and 100% survivability, exposed to different Pb-spiked soils 100, 350, 1500, and 2500 mg kg?1, supplied as lead nitrate. After 4 weeks, root and shoot concentrations reached 1652 and 502 mg Pb kg?1 DW, while after 6 weeks they increased up to 3091 and 527 mg Pb kg?1 DW, respectively, at highest Pb concentration. As compared to the 4 week experiments, the plant growth and biomass yield were higher after 6 weeks of Pb exposure. However, the chlorophyll content of leaves decreased but only a slight decline in photosynthetic efficiency was observed on exposure to Pb at both 4 and 6 weeks. The Pb accumulation was higher in roots than in the shoots. The bioconcentration factor of Pb was > 1 in all the plant samples, but the translocation factor was < 1. This suggested C. didymus as a good candidate for phytoremediation of Pb-contaminated soils and can be used for future remediation purposes.  相似文献

The objective of this study in 2009 was to examine whether levels of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) were higher in the leaves than in the stems of a submerged aquatic plant Ceratophyllum demersum in Anzali wetland. Cadmium, Pb and Cr concentrations were highest in the leaves. The mean concentrations of Cd and Cr in the leaves at all the sampling sites ranged between 0.94–1.26 μg g?1 and 1.03–2.71 μg g?1, respectively. Lead also had its highest concentrations in the leaves. The mean concentration of Pb in the leaves at all sampling sites ranged between 7.49–11.88 μg g?1. Copper and Zn concentrations were highest in the stems. The mean concentrations of Cu and Zn in the stems at all sampling sites ranged between 10.79–17.91 μg g?1 and 19.89–40.01 μg g?1, respectively. Cadmium and Pb concentrations were higher in the leaves than in the stems, while Zn concentration was higher in the stems than in the leaves. Accumulation of Cu and Cr in the organs of C. demersum was in descending order of leaf ~ stem, since there was no significant difference between their mean concentrations in the leaves and stems.  相似文献

Bog peat soils have been accumulating at Wellington Plain peatland, Victoria, Australia for the last 3300 years. Now, dried peat soils are common adjacent to bog peats. The 14C basal age of dried peat is not different from the 14C basal age of bog peat, which supports the theory that dried peat formed from bog peat. A novel application of 210Pb dating links the timing of this change with the introduction of livestock to Wellington Plain in the mid‐1800s. Physical loss of material appears to have been the dominant process removing material as bog peats drained to form dried peats, as indicated by the mass balances of carbon and lead. This research has implications for the post‐fire and post‐grazing restoration of bogs in Victoria's Alpine National Park, and the contribution of peat soils to Australia's carbon emissions.  相似文献

This study examined the ability of the aquatic plant Lemna minor (duckweed) to remove soluble lead under various laboratory conditions. In a batch process L. minor was exposed to different pH values (4.5–8.0) and temperature (15–35°C) in presence of different lead concentrations (0.1–10.0 mg L?1) for 168 h. The amount of biomass obtained in the study period on a dry weight basis, the concentrations of lead in tissue and in medium and net uptake of lead by Lemna all have been determined in each condition. The percentages of lead uptake ratios (PMU) and bioconcentration factors (BCF) were also calculated for these conditions. Bioaccumulated lead concentrations and the PMU were obtained at lowest pH of 4.5, and at 30°C. The highest accumulated lead concentration was found at pH 4.5 as 3.599 mg Pb g?1 in 10.0 mg L?1. It decreased to pH 6.0, but it did not change at pH 6.0–8.0 range. The maximum lead accumulation was obtained at 30°C as 8.622 mg Pb g?1 in 10 mg L?1 at pH 5.0, and the minimum was at 15°C as 0.291 mg g?1 in 0.1 mg L?1. Lead accumulation gradually increased with increasing lead in medium, but the opposite trend was observed for PMU. Lead accumulation increased up to 50 mg L?1, but did not change significantly in the 50.0–100.0 mg L?1 range. The lead uptake from water was modeled and the equation fit the experimental data very well.  相似文献

Previous measurements of the 14C activity of lake sediments and Potamogeton plants from Säynäjälampi, collected in 1970, indicated a severe hard-water effect (Donner et al. 1971). Samples from new cores, collected in 1977, were sliced into thin sections down to 18 cm. The 14C concentration in samples down to 7 cm was similar to that obtained by the Helsinki Laboratory. The corresponding apparent 14C age is almost 2 000 years. Light-coloured layers, apparently due to catchment drainage, were used together with density diagrams to correlate the cores. The drainage history gives a time-scale showing that the lowest samples dated to correlate the cores. The drainage history gives a time-scale showing that the lowest samples dated were just old enough to be pre-bomb sediments. Three samples of submerged plants were also examined, indicating some exchange with the air and an appreciable reservoir age. The activity of the plants was significantly lower in 1978 than in 1970. One sample, well below the lowest drainage stratum, indicates a reservoir age of ca. 1 100 years. This sample yielded an apparent age of the INS fraction which was significantly different from that of the SOL fraction. The difference was determined to ca. 600 years. Total 210Pb was determined via 210Po using isotope dilution while 226Ra was measured with the help of radon emanation. The 226Ra was used to estimate the supported 210Pb. The unsupported 210Pb showed a higher sediment accumulation rate for the top nine cm of one core (the length investigated was 16.5 cm). The varying accumulation rate was explained by human activities, as could be seen from the heterogenous sediment composition of the cores. Recent vegetational change is described from direct observations since 1957. Pollen analysis does not give any reliable indication of agriculture.  相似文献

Microbial Biomass and Activity in Lead-Contaminated Soil   总被引:18,自引:1,他引:17       下载免费PDF全文
Microbial community diversity, potential microbial activity, and metal resistance were determined in three soils whose lead contents ranged from 0.00039 to 48 mmol of Pb kg of soil−1. Biomass levels were directly related to lead content. A molecular analysis of 16S rRNAs suggested that each soil contained a complex, diverse microbial community. A statistical analysis of the phospholipid fatty acids indicated that the community in the soil having the highest lead content was not related to the communities in the other soils. All of the soils contained active microbial populations that mineralized [14C]glucose. In all samples, 10 to 15% of the total culturable bacteria were Pb resistant and had MIC of Pb for growth of 100 to 150 μM.  相似文献

We examined the potential use of lead (Pb) isotopes to source archaeological materials from the Maya region of Mesoamerica. The main objectives were to determine if: 1) geologic terrains throughout the Maya area exhibit distinct lead isotope ratios (206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb), and 2) a combination of lead and strontium ratios can enhance sourcing procedures in the Mesoamerica region. We analyzed 60 rock samples for lead isotope ratios and a representative subset of samples for lead, uranium, and thorium concentrations across the Maya region, including the Northern Lowlands of the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula, the Southern Lowlands of Guatemala and Belize, the Volcanic Highlands, the Belizean Maya Mountains, and the Metamorphic Province/Motagua Valley. Although there is some overlap within certain sub-regions, particularly the geologically diverse Metamorphic Province, lead isotopes can be used to distinguish between the Northern Lowlands, the Southern Lowlands, and the Volcanic Highlands. The distinct lead isotope ratios in the sub-regions are related to the geology of the Maya area, exhibiting a general trend in the lowlands of geologically younger rocks in the north to older rocks in the south, and Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the southern highlands. Combined with other sourcing techniques such as strontium (87Sr/86Sr) and oxygen (δ18O), a regional baseline for lead isotope ratios can contribute to the development of lead isoscapes in the Maya area, and may help to distinguish among geographic sub-regions at a finer scale than has been previously possible. These isotope baselines will provide archaeologists with an additional tool to track the origin and movement of ancient humans and artifacts across this important region.  相似文献

Radiocarbon signatures (Δ14C) of carbon dioxide (CO2) provide a measure of the age of C being decomposed by microbes or respired by living plants. Over a 2‐year period, we measured Δ14C of soil respiration and soil CO2 in boreal forest sites in Canada, which varied primarily in the amount of time since the last stand‐replacing fire. Comparing bulk respiration Δ14C with Δ14C of CO2 evolved in incubations of heterotrophic (decomposing organic horizons) and autotrophic (root and moss) components allowed us to estimate the relative contributions of O horizon decomposition vs. plant sources. Although soil respiration fluxes did not vary greatly, differences in Δ14C of respired CO2 indicated marked variation in respiration sources in space and time. The 14C signature of respired CO2 respired from O horizon decomposition depended on the age of C substrates. These varied with time since fire, but consistently had Δ14C greater (averaging ~120‰) than autotrophic respiration. The Δ14C of autotrophically respired CO2 in young stands equaled those expected for recent photosynthetic products (70‰ in 2003, 64‰ in 2004). CO2 respired by black spruce roots in stands >40 years old had Δ14C up to 30‰ higher than recent photosynthates, indicating a significant contribution of C stored at least several years in plants. Decomposition of O horizon organic matter made up 20% or less of soil respiration in the younger (<40 years since fire) stands, increasing to ~50% in mature stands. This is a minimum for total heterotrophic contribution, since mineral soil CO2 had Δ14C close to or less than those we have assigned to autotrophic respiration. Decomposition of old organic matter in mineral soils clearly contributed to soil respiration in younger stands in 2003, a very dry year, when Δ14C of soil respiration in younger successional stands dropped below those of the atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

The population of about 300 6-year-old preschool children was studied for lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in deciduous teeth, scalp hair, and capillary blood. Zinc (Zn) content in hair was also measured due to its possible interferences with the elements studied. The Pb and Cd contents were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction, and Zn, by flame method. Metal levels found were comparable to those in European countries. Positive correlations between Pb and Cd in the same and different tissues were widespread (r = 0.23–0.68). A positive correlation was found between Pb in teeth and blood (r = 0.65, p < 0.001). Pb blood threshold 100 μg L−1 referred to 2.6 μg g−1 Pb in teeth. Predictability of this Pb teeth limit was 14% vs. 5% for Pb blood. Strong negative correlation was found between hair Pb and Zn (r = −0.68, p < 0.001). Enhanced Cd and Zn levels in hair were associated with the household drinking water hardness. The associations with some other environmental and behavioral factors were also presented and discussed. The results proved the advantage of analysis of primary teeth for Pb exposure screening of preschool children.  相似文献

The distribution of lead in soil samples collected from both surface (0 to 10?cm) and profile (O 0 to 10?cm, E 11 to 30?cm, Eb 31 to 50?cm, Bw 51 to 100?cm, and C 181 to 200?cm) at a 14-year-old rifle/pistol shooting range located in central Florida were determined using EPA Method 3051a (microwave, HNO3/HCl=3:1, v/v). In addition to total lead analysis, Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) analysis was performed on corresponding samples to determine whether the soils would require special handling as hazardous waste if the soils were to be removed from the range. Total lead in surface soils varied from 330 to 17 850?mg Pb kg?1, with the greatest concentration in the middle of the backstop berm. The TCLP tests indicated that lead in all surface soils exceeded the 5?mg Pb L?1 critical level of federal regulation for solid wastes and hazardous wastes provided by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and would be characterized as hazardous waste. Sequential fractionation and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed that lead carbonate existed predominantly (91.3%) in the berm soil. The weathering of lead bullets in the soil environments formed primarily as hydrocerussite (Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2), with small amounts of massicot (PbO) and cerussite (PbCO3). However, the elevated soil pH, caused by the oxidization and transformation process of elemental lead in lead bullets, could be a significant factor in limiting the migration of lead in the soil.  相似文献

Abstract

We have examined the potential of alcoholic beverages to elute Pb from crystal wine decanters and glasses. Port wine containing 89 Pb L?1 was aliquoted into three lead crystal wine decanters. The wine Pb content rose steadily to a mean of 3,518 μg L?1 after 4 months. We then analyzed wines and liquors which had been stored in crystal decanters in the homes of our colleagues for periods of six months or longer. In the first four homes, eight decanters contained beverages with a mean Pb concentration of 7,781μg L?1 In a short-term experiment, white wine was found to elute small quantities of Pb from lead crystal glasses within minutes; the mean wine Pb concentration rose from 33 μg L?1 at time zero to a mean of 99 μg L?1 after four hours. We conclude that, in particular, lead crystal wine decanters are potentially an important source of Pb exposure for a segment of the population. In addition, lead crystal baby bottles, although not as widely available, were found to elute Pb into apple juice and infant formula; their sale should be banned.  相似文献
