This study examines the association between Harris lines and enamel hypoplasia. This association is analyzed in terms of: 1) presence/absence of these markers in each individual, and 2) age of the individuals at the time of Harris lines and enamel hypoplasias formation. Data from two archaeological groups (Azapa-71 and Azapa-140) from northern Chile were analyzed. The results indicate Harris lines and enamel hypoplasias are not associated in terms of presence/absence. Moreover, the estimated age of the individuals at the time of Harris lines and enamel hypoplasia formation shows that these two markers have a very different distribution. While enamel hypoplasias clustered between ages 3 and 5, Harris lines were more commonly formed during the first year of life, as well as during adolescence, which are the periods of most accelerated growth. We propose that Harris lines are a result of a normal, rather than abnormal, saltatory growth process.  相似文献

Harris lines represent episodes of growth arrest followed by recovery, thus reflecting episodes of mismatched imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Consumption of ethanol during the growth period — formerly extended in our wine-producing rural areas- may lead to such a situation, due at least in part to the energy-wasteful MEOS-linked ethanol metabolism. Based on these facts, in the present study we have analysed the relationship between ethanol intake during growth period and the presence of Harris lines in the right tibia in 100 consecutive adult patients admitted to our hospitalization unit. Early ethanol consumption was strongly related with the presence of two or more, and three or more Harris lines, so that ethanol consumption should be considered in the differential diagnosis of Harris lines, and conversely, the presence of Harris lines point to ethanol consumption during growth period. This association was independent from coexisting starvation and/or illness.  相似文献

Early‐life conditions can drive ageing patterns and life history strategies throughout the lifespan. Certain social, genetic and nutritional developmental conditions are more likely to produce high‐quality offspring: those with good likelihood of recruitment and productivity. Here, we call such conditions “favoured states” and explore their relationship with physiological variables during development in a long‐lived seabird, the black‐legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla). Two favoured states were experimentally generated by manipulation of food availability and brood size, while hatching order and sex were also explored as naturally generating favoured states. Thus, the favoured states we explored were high food availability, lower levels of sibling competition, hatching first and male sex. We tested the effects of favoured developmental conditions on growth, stress, telomere length (a molecular marker associated with lifespan) and nestling survival. Generation of favoured states through manipulation of both the nutritional and social environments furthered our understanding of their relative contributions to development and phenotype: increased food availability led to larger body size, reduced stress and higher antioxidant status, while lower sibling competition (social environment) led to lower telomere loss and longer telomere lengths in fledglings. Telomere length predicted nestling survival, and wing growth was also positively correlated with telomere length, supporting the idea that telomeres may indicate individual quality, mediated by favoured states.  相似文献

Ptilochronology does not appear to be a reliable measure of the daily growth rate of contour feathers or the nutritional state of nestling Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca . Growth bars on primary remiges, which according to ptilochronology represent a day's increment of feather growth, are only about half as wide as the actual daily increase in the length of these feathers while they are growing. The average width of the growth bars on primaries was also uncorrelated with other commonly used measures of growth or nutritional status (increase in body mass or in the size of the wing or tarsus), although these were highly correlated with each other. In adult flycatchers, the average width of the growth bars on tertials was unrelated to the average bar width on greater coverts, although both feathers are replaced during the winter (prenuptial) moult. This suggests that the growth bars either do not reflect the nutritional status of adults during normal periods of moult or that contour feathers in different tracts vary in their sensitivity to the nutritional status of the moulting bird. To our knowledge, this is the first time that anyone has attempted to apply ptilochronology to nestlings. It is noteworthy that a method of measuring growth and nutritional state that has shown promise when applied to induced feathers of adult birds seems to be unreliable when applied to the developing plumage of nestlings, and perhaps the normal (not-induced) replacement plumage of adults.  相似文献

The purpose of the study is to check the relationship between the occurrence of Harris lines and the morphological differentiation of the long bones of the human skeleton as an indicator of living conditions. The bone material (233 adult individuals, including 120 males and 113 females) was collected at a mediaeval burial ground in Cedynia, Poland. Recommended methods were applied to estimate the sex and age of the individuals (Ferembach et al 1979; Buikstra & Ubelaker 1994). The results obtained indicate that there is no clear relationship between metric characteristics of the studied long bones and the occurrence of Harris lines. Adverse environmental factors, which triggered the occurrence of Harris lines did not strongly affect the growth of long bones and did not change their morphology. Regardless of the phase of ontogenetic development in which the arrested growth lines (HL) formed, no effect of this fact on the final length of bones was observed. Similarly, no statistically significant differences were found in the proportions of bones between individuals reacting to adverse living conditions with the formation of Harris lines and those, whose bones were free of Harris lines. One may assume that Harris lines are of significance in epidemiological research and when assessing the general health profile of a population, but they are less useful in research on morphological reactions of individuals to living conditions.  相似文献

Microdensitometric analysis of a radiographic image of mineralized tissue offers information on the morphologic characteristics of the specimen examined. The use of microstructure (such as individual trabecula of bone) and macrostructure (such as Harris lines of arrest) as in vivo bone markers allows for assessment of gross skeletal changes in nondestructive fashion. This technique is also applicable to the study of the interrelationship of tooth and bone. In addition, microdensitometry offers precise information on the fine structure of bone as regards the trabecular elements. This technique is applicable in determining the size and quantity of trabeculae, their persistence over long periods of time, and the factors responsible for change or lack of change in trabeculae during growth and aging.  相似文献

Application of association mapping to plant breeding populations has the potential to revolutionize plant genetics. The main objectives of this study were to (i) investigate the extent and genomic distribution of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between pairs of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers, (ii) compare these results with those obtained with simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, and (iii) compare the usefulness of AFLP and SSR markers for genomewide association mapping in plant breeding populations. We examined LD in a cross-section of 72 European elite inbred lines genotyped with 452 AFLP and 93 SSR markers. LD was significant (p < 0.05) for about 15% of the AFLP marker pairs and for about 49% of the SSR marker pairs in each of the two germplasm groups, flint and dent. In both germplasm groups the ratio of linked to unlinked loci pairs in LD was higher for AFLPs than for SSRs. The observation of LD due to linkage for both marker types suggested that genome-wide association mapping should be possible using either AFLPs or SSRs. The results of our study indicated that SSRs should be favored over AFLPs but the opposite applies to populations with a long history of recombination.  相似文献

A total of ten rare indigenous rice landraces of West Bengal were screened for germination potential and seedling growth under varying concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions as osmotic stress inducing agents. Among the studied rice landraces Kelas and Bhut Moori showed highest degree of tolerance to induced osmotic stresses. Proline content of the studied lines was also determined. Genetic relationship among the studied rice landraces was assessed with 22 previously reported osmotic stress tolerance linked Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers. The identified allelic variants in form of amplified products size (molecular weight) for each SSR marker were documented to find out allele mining set for the linked markers of the studied genotypes in relation to osmotic stress tolerance. A Microsatellite Panel was constructed for the different allelic forms (size of amplified products) of each used marker. Among 22 SSR markers, ten showed unique alleles in form of single specific amplified product for the studied four genotypes which can be used for varietal identification. Genetic relationship among the studied rice lines was determined and a dendrogram was constructed to reveal their genetic inter-relationship. Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) for each used marker was also calculated for the studied rice lines.  相似文献

We examined nutritional and developmental instability in prehistoric Japan, using data from 49 individuals across 13 archaeological sites. Hypoplasia incidence was used as a measure of nutritional stress, and fluctuating asymmetry (of upper facial breath, orbital breadth, and orbital height) as an indirect assessment of developmental instability. Abundant resources due to a stable climate during the Middle Jomon (5,000-3,000 BP) encouraged population growth, which led to regional cultural homogeneity and complexity. A population crash on Honshu in the Late/Final Jomon (roughly 4,000-2,000 BP) led to regionally divergent subsistence economies and settlement patterns. We find that the nutritional stress was consistent between periods, but developmental instability (DI) decreased in the Late/Final Jomon. While the DI values were not statistically significant, the higher values for Middle Jomon may result from sedentism, social stratification, and differential access to resources. On Hokkaido, Jomon culture persisted until the Okhotsk period (1,000-600 BP), marked by the arrival of immigrants from Sakhalin. Nutritional stress was consistent between Middle and Late/Final Jomon, but DI increased in the Late/Final. Nutritional and developmental instability decreased from Late/Final to Okhotsk, suggesting a positive immigrant effect. We expected to find an association between stress markers due to the synergistic relationship between nutrition and pathology. The data support this hypothesis, but only one finding was statistically significant. While high critical values from small sample sizes place limits on the significance of our results, we find that the impact of environmental and cultural change to prehistoric Japanese populations was minimal.  相似文献

Endochondral growth, appositional growth, and acquisition of cortical bone thickness in the femur are investigated in subadult skeletons (N = 43, dental age range birth to 12 years) from the 19th‐century AD burial site of St. Martin's churchyard, Birmingham, England. Endochondral growth is monitored using diaphyseal femoral length. Appositional growth is monitored using radiographic midshaft mediolateral width and acquisition of cortical bone using combined mediolateral cortical thickness measured at the midshaft from radiographs. The methodology involves plotting these variables against dental age. Growth is compared in children of differing socioeconomic status. Higher and lower status individuals are identified in the assemblage by their burial in brick vaults in the case of the former and in earth‐cut graves in the case of the latter. The relationships between bone dimensions and dental age are described using a polynomial regression procedure, and analysis of regression residuals is used to evaluate differences in bone dimension‐for‐dental age between the two status groups. Results show that lower socioeconomic status individuals had lower cortical thickness‐for‐dental age than those of higher status. This was interpreted as likely reflecting poorer nutrition in the children of lower socioeconomic backgrounds. There was no patterning with respect to socioeconomic status in femur diaphyseal length or midshaft width. The results support the idea that, for skeletal populations, growth in cortical thickness may be a more sensitive indicator of adverse conditions in childhood than growth in bone length or width. Stress during early development can induce substantial long‐term effects in organisms. In the case of birds, despite growth compensations, nestlings reared under harsh conditions typically show reduced survival chances in adulthood. It has been proposed that environmental early‐life stressors could affect longevity via effects on telomere length, possibly mediated through oxidative stress. However, the link between these processes is not clear. In this study, we experimentally manipulated brood size in spotless starlings (Sturnus unicolor) to test the causal relationship between early stress, oxidative and corticosterone‐mediated stress and telomere shortening. Our results show that experimentally enlarged brood sizes led to a reduction in morphometric development on nestlings, the effect being stronger for females than males. Additionally, basal corticosterone levels increased with increasing brood size in female nestlings. Neither plasma antioxidant status nor malondialdehyde levels (a marker of lipid peroxidation) were affected by experimental brood size, although the levels of a key intracellular antioxidant (glutathione) decreased with increasing brood size. We found that the treatment showed a quadratic effect on nestling telomere lengths: these were shortened either by increases or by decreases in the original brood size. Our study provides experimental evidence for a link between developmental stress and telomere length, but does not support a direct causal link of this reduction with corticosterone or oxidative stress. We suggest that future studies should focus on how telomere length responds to additional markers of allostatic load.  相似文献

The Great Irish Famine of 1845–1852 is among the worst food crises in human history. While numerous aspects of this period have been studied by generations of scholars, relatively little attention has so far been given to the physiological impact it is likely to have had on the people who suffered and succumbed to it. This study examines the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia, Harris lines, and growth retardation in the nonadult proportion of a skeletal population comprising victims of the Famine who died in the workhouse in the city of Kilkenny between 1847 and 1851. The frequency of enamel hypoplasia in these children does not appear to have increased as a consequence of famine, although this fact is likely to be a reflection of the osteological paradox. Harris lines and growth retardation; however, were very prevalent, and the manifestation and age‐specific distribution of these may be indicators of the Famine experience. While there was no clear correlation in the occurrence of the assessed markers, the presence of cribra orbitalia displayed a significant relationship to enamel hypoplasia in 1‐ to 5‐year‐old children. While starvation, metabolic disorders and infectious diseases are likely to have greatly contributed to the manifestation of the markers, the psychosocial stress relating to institutionalization in the workhouse should not be underestimated as a substantial causative factor for skeletal stress in this population. Amplified fragment length polymorphic (AFLP) markers were used to discriminate between lines of pigs, divergently selected over seven generations for components of efficient lean growth rate. A total of 270 animals with 30 animals per line were genotyped for 239 polymorphic AFLP markers. Canonical variate analysis identified linear combinations of the AFLP marker scores that grouped animals by selection line with no overlap between selection lines. Cluster analysis of AFLP marker scores identified 10 groups of animals with 226 of the 270 animals clustered into nine groups, each consisting of animals from only one selection line. AFLP marker genotyping, using the EcoRI and TaqI restriction enzymes, provided an effective means of discriminating between animals of different selection lines that have arisen from one base population.  相似文献

Zinc deficiency is a critical nutritional problem in soils, restricting yield and nutritional quality of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Some genotypes (Zn-efficient) can produce greater yield and accumulate more Zn in seed under Zn deficiency than standard (Zn-inefficient) genotypes. However, there is little information regarding the genetics of Zn uptake/accumulation and location of genes conferring Zn efficiency in barley. Selection through molecular markers for seed Zn accumulation might be an efficient complementary breeding tool in barley. With the aim of developing molecular markers for increased accumulation of Zn in seed, a population of 150 DH lines derived from a cross between Clipper (low-Zn-accumulator) and Sahara 3771 (high-Zn-accumulator) was screened in the field and glasshouse for seed Zn concentration and content. One dominant DNA polymorphism was detected using the microsatellite-anchored fragment length polymorphism (MFLP) technique. The candidate MFLP marker was isolated from the MFLP gel, re-amplified by PCR, cloned, sequenced, and converted into simple sequence-specific and PCR-based marker. This marker, located on the short arm of chromosome 2H, might be useful for the improvement of barley nutritional quality and productivity programs in Zn-deficient environments. However, high seed Zn alone can not replace the need for Zn fertilization.  相似文献

Research in bioarchaeology and among living people provides insight into the biological and biocultural consequences of subsistence, political, and economic transitions. Central to this effort is examining infectious disease, such as diarrheal disease, respiratory infections, and parasitic infections because they are an important source of nutritional and energetic stress in both past and current groups. Although infection may not always result in overt disease, frequent exposure results in biological stress with a negative effect on child growth and, by extension, health. The goal of this article is to examine the association between a common class of infectious disease, soil-transmitted helminth worms, and nutritional status among youth living in communities that vary with respect to their distance from a commercial center. In 2007, anthropometric measurements and parasitological surveys were collected for 338 2–14-year-old children and adolescents living in lowland Bolivia as part of the Tsimane' Amazonian Panel Study. Associations between the presence of helminth infections and markers of both short- and long-term nutritional status were overall weak. Youth living in communities distant from the commercial center were more likely to be positive for multiple parasite species than youth in near communities, but youth in mid-distance communities had lower infection rates. This article demonstrates the challenge of identifying associations between nutritional and disease stress when individual and household factors are nested in a larger context of socioeconomic and environmental change. Increased collaboration between bioarchaeology and human biology should continue to examine the connections between stress and disease across time. Harris lines are widely accepted as indicators of physiological stress and provide valuable data for determining the extent and nature of the physiological stress factors acting on a human community. Traditionally, Harris lines are studied in skeletal populations. In the study reported here, data were collected on living children to eventually clarify if stress is basically chronic or acute in nature, if it has a greater impact on children or adults, and if it is correlated with increased rates of mortality. The existence of Harris lines was determined in a sample of 400 children, 210 males and 190 females, randomly selected from those under examination in the radiology services of hospitals. Radiological analysis was used to analyze Harris lines. The age of Harris line formation and variations in the number of lines with age were established to determine at which age the densest line population was present. For this sample, the formation of Harris lines is around 2–3 years of age, in agreement with published literature. It should be taken into consideration that Harris lines are the end result of multiple factors, rather than a single stress factor, and are influenced by an individual’s immune system and resistance to stress.  相似文献

Polymorphism of 30 canine-derived microsatellites was studied in a group of 200 red foxes kept on 2 Polish farms. 22 out of 30 microsatellites were selected to study association between marker genotypes and body weight (BW), body length (BL), body circumference (BC), tail length (TL), ear height (EH), length of the right front limb (FRLL), length of the right rear limb (RRLL), length of the right front foot (FRFL) and length of the right rear foot (RRFL). A total of 112 alleles and 243 genotypes were found at 22 autosomal microsatellite loci. Three monomorphic loci deemed as uninformative were excluded from the study. The association between marker genotypes and the studied traits was analysed using general linear model (GLM) procedure and least squares means (LSM). Linkage disequilibrium (LD) was estimated to assess non-random association between microsatellite loci. Out of 19 microsatellites studied four markers showed no association with the studied traits, three markers had a significant effect on one trait, and another three markers had significant effect on two traits. Among ten microsatellites with significant effect on four economically important traits (BW, BL, BC, TL) four were associated with two characters: marker FH2613 with BW and BC, marker FH2097withBL and BC, marker ZUBECA6 with BW and BC, whereas marker REN75M10 was associated with BL and TL. The strongest LD (r2 ranged from 0.15 to 0.33) was estimated between nine loci with significant effect on economically important traits (BW, BL, BC, TL).  相似文献

Although hoarding has been studied intensively for many decades, few studies have attempted to measure its actual fitness consequences. To fill this gap, we used ptilochronology, the growth of replacementfeathers as a measure of nutritional status, and thus a reflectionof starvation risk, of individual European nuthatches (Sittaeuropaea) during winter. We found that nuthatches are long-termhoarders, retrieving stored food up to at least 98 days afterstoring it. Long-term hoarding enhanced the nutritional statusof individual birds significantly because those individualsexperimentally given an opportunity to store seeds during autumnregrew plucked rectrices faster and larger than did controlbirds. Nuthatches used their stored seeds prudently by adjustingthe amounts they ate to meet their requirements, as determinedby ambient temperatures. Nuthatches refrained from using storedfood during periods of relatively benign conditions so theycould use the food during periods of more severe conditions.  相似文献

Quantification of the iron nutritional status of phytoplankton is of great interest not only for the study of the oceans but also for fresh waters. Flavodoxin is a small flavoprotein proposed as a molecular marker for iron stress, since it is induced as a consequence of iron deprivation, replacing the iron-sulphur protein ferredoxin. Flavodoxin and ferredoxin from Scenedesmus vacuolatus have been immunoquantified in cells grown under different iron nutritional conditions. Flavodoxin and ferredoxin levels correlate with the iron availability, and the calculated flavodoxin index can be used as an iron-stress marker. Other physiological parameters such as copper deficiency, heterotrophic or mixotrophic growth, nitrogen source and salt stress were also tested as potential factors influencing flavodoxin expression. Salt stress and heterotrophic growth conditions alter flavodoxin and ferredoxin expression. Once flavodoxin expression is repressed by iron (and severe deficiency alleviated), S.vacuolatus still increases its ferredoxin from 0·5 to 1·6 mol of ferredoxin per mole of ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase, and this ratio can be used for the evaluation of mild deficiency.  相似文献
