Experimental infection of Echinoparyphium recurvatum von Linstow (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) cercariae in the snail second intermediate host Lymnaea peregra Müller shows that metacercarial encystment takes place on the lining of the mantle cavity, pericardial cavity and kidney lumen, with the mantle cavity the most preferred site. All three sites are accessible via the body openings. The metacercariae appear to be more susceptible to encapsulation in the visceral mass than in the cavity of the mantle, pericardium and the lumen of the kidney.  相似文献

The effect of cadmium exposure of the snail first intermediate host Lymnaea peregra on the incidence of encystment of Echinoparyphium recurvatum (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) cercariae without emergence from the snail was investigated. Exposure to 100 microg l(-1) Cd for 72 h caused a significant increase in the incidence of first host encystment when compared to controls. In addition, autometallographic staining of E. recurvatum daughter rediae and developing cercariae showed that there was metal accumulation within their body tissues. The significance of these findings to parasite transmission in metal-polluted environments is discussed.  相似文献

Utilization of a single-species molluscan community of Lymnaea peregra by metacercariae of Echinoparyphium recurvatum over a summer (July-September) period in south-east England showed an increase in the mean number of cysts per host with host size and time of exposure. Aggregation resulting from host and habitat-related factors increased with host size and time of exposure. Encystment within the host was restricted to the peripheral organs in smaller juvenile snails but as snails increased in size, metacercariae were distributed throughout the tissues.  相似文献

The toxicity of cadmium, zinc and Cd/Zn mixtures to the transmission of Echinoparyphium recurvatum (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) cercariae into the snail second intermediate hosts was investigated at concentrations ranging from 100 microg l-1 to 10 000 microg l-1 in both soft and hard water. A differential response in the infectivity of metal-exposed cercariae into Lymnaea peregra and Physa fontinalis was demonstrated which was dependent on the snail species being infected. Exposure of L. peregra, P. fontinalis, and L. stagnalis to heavy metals caused a differing susceptibility to E. recurvatum cercariae depending on the snail species being exposed. The mechanism and effects of metal toxicity, together with the importance of the parasite/host strain on cercarial transmission are discussed.  相似文献

A group of 20 young and another of 20 adult Lymnaea truncatula were abundantly supplied with food and kept continuously under cold conditions (5 degrees C) in the laboratory for 3 months and the effects of low temperature on their behavior, growth and reproduction were studied. The results indicate that at low temperature the activity of L. truncatula was markedly reduced but complete hibernation did not occur. The snails seem to be unaffected by the low temperature itself since none (both young and adult) died during the 3 months that they were kept at 5 degrees C. Reduced feeding, even in the presence of abundant food, during the cold conditions caused an almost total inhibiton of growth. Of even more significance was the suppression of reproduction which was connected with the metabolic rate of adult snails kept at low temperature. Young snails seem to profit by exposure to low temperature. On the return to normal laboratory temperature (16-22 degrees C) the young snails became very active, fed voraciously, grew rapidly, tended to live longer and produced more offspring than the controls. Low temperature, however, appears to have an adverse after-effect on the growth and reproduction of mature snails. Relatively, fewer eggs were deposited in this case. The results indicate that under natural field conditions in England, where temperature fluctuations during the usually mild winter months are common, the greater burden of increasing the population in overwintered snails must rest on the younger members of the community.  相似文献

During an investigation on intestinal flukes of house rats in Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do, a total of 6 species of trematodes belonging to 3 families; Echinostomatidae (Echinostoma hortense, E. cinetorchis, E. revolutum and Echinoparyphium recurvatum), Diplostomidae (Fibricola seoulensis) and Plagiorchiidae (Plagiorchis muris), were recovered from two adult rats. E. revolutum and E. recurvatum were new trematode faunae of rats in Korea. E. revolutum had an elongated body, 5.3-6.0 mm long and 1.0-1.3 mm wide. The total number of collar spines was 35-37 including 5 end group ones on each ventral corner. Its coiled uterus contained numerous eggs. E. recurvatum also had an elongated body, 3.5-4.7 mm long and 0.50-0.65 mm wide. It had total 45 collar spines including 4 end group ones. The uterus was short with only a few eggs. It has been first confirmed by this study that E. revolutum and E. recurvatum are indigenously distributed among house rats in Korea.  相似文献

The effect of ingestion by Lymnaea auricularia on the viability and infectivity of Fasciola gigantica metacercariae was studied. The cyst wall was unaffected by the snail's digestive processes. Two rabbits, each infected with 50 ingested metacercariae, died at 83 and 87 days post-infection. Eight and 10 immature flukes were recovered from the livers, indicating that the metacercariae had remained infective after passing through the intestine of the snail.  相似文献

The effects of cadmium and zinc toxicity on orientation behaviour (photo- and geo-taxis) of Echinoparyphium recurvatum cercariae was investigated at concentrations ranging from 10 to 1000 microg l(-1). Exposure to the toxicants at all metal concentrations caused a change in orientation to negative phototaxis and positive geotaxis during the submaximal dispersal phase (0.5 h cercarial age). Autometallography staining of cercariae exposed to 1000 microg l(-1) cadmium or zinc showed selective binding of heavy metals to tegumental surface sites associated with sensory receptors. The significance to parasite transmission of changes in cercarial orientation behaviour in metal polluted environments is discussed.  相似文献

Glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence in whole-brain preparations of the central nervous system of the freshwater pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, was used to map the distribution of serotonin-and dopamine-containing neurons. Serotonin and dopamine were easily distinguishable by differences in color of fluorescence. Serotonin-containing neurons were consistently found in the cerebral, pedal, right parietal and visceral ganglia. Dopamine-containing neurons were found in the pedal, and buccal ganglia. Prior incubation of brains in 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), the immediate precursor to serotonin, produced serotonin-like fluoresence in neurons which do not normally fluoresce. These neurons thus probably possess specific uptake mechanisms for 5-HTP. Since 5-HTP itself fluoresces yellow, the glyoxylic acid technique cannot determine if these neurons contain the enzyme aromatic amino acid decarboxylase, which converts 5-HTP to serotonin, or merely fluoresce because of the 5-HTP taken into the cells.  相似文献

Lymnaea peregra was collected at sites, predominantly from the Caha plateau, in south-west Ireland. These included sites investigated by previous workers and found to contain populations with a distinctive pattern of variation in shell-shape. Normally spired populations and non-spired ( involuta, sub-involuta ) could occur in adjacent loughs in the same watershed. The biochemical variation in some of these populations was investigated using horizontal starch-gel zone electrophoresis. Fourteen biochemical loci were investigated. Although circumscribed by difficulties in collecting and low sample numbers, the investigation showed that the pattern of variation in shell shape was still present and was not correlated or associated with the biochemical variation. While this did not support hypotheses of geographic race formation or incipient speciation, it was in agreement with the current view of variation and speciation in fresh-water pulmonates.  相似文献

Plagiorchis noblei infections impair the survival and development of fourth instar Aedes aegypti larvae. Mortality during the larval and pupal stages reached 92%, and 60% of the emerging adults were malformed. The metacercariae interfere with pupation and the emergence of adults. Larvae and pupae that fail to transform to the next developmental stage within the normal time characteristically persist for extended periods, but invariably die without transforming. Whereas 82% of the control larvae gave rise to functional adults, only 4% of infected larvae managed to do so. Such effects may facilitate the transmission of the parasite.  相似文献

Atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and temperature are likely to increase in the future and may change plant growth and composition characteristics. Rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth.) and bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) were grown on a natural field soil in temperature-gradient greenhouses to evaluate the effects of elevated [CO2] and temperature on tissue composition and digestibility during the establishment year. Carbon dioxide levels were maintained at 365 (ambient) and 640 μL CO2 L–1 air. The temperature-gradient greenhouses were regulated to obtain air temperature sectors of 0.2, 1.5, 2.9, and 4.5 °C above ambient. Samples were taken of previously undefoliated herbage at 57, 86, 121, 148, and 217 days after planting and entire plots were harvested at 218 days after planting. Elevated [CO2] increased total nonstructural carbohydrate concentration in rhizoma peanut leaves by almost 50%. Rhizoma peanut leaf N concentration was 6% lower at elevated than at ambient [CO2]. The N concentration in new rhizomes of rhizoma peanut was increased by high [CO2], while the N concentration in bahiagrass was not affected by temperature or [CO2]. No effects of [CO2] and temperature were found on neutral detergent fibre in rhizoma peanut leaves or stems; however, elevated [CO2] increased neutral detergent fibre in bahiagrass leaves. Only at season end was in vitro organic matter digestion of rhizoma peanut higher at ambient (623 g kg–1) than at elevated [CO2] (609 g kg–1). Elevated [CO2] had a greater effect on tissue composition of rhizoma peanut than of bahiagrass. These data suggest that elevated temperature and CO2-induced changes in chemical composition of forage species adapted to humid subtropics will be relatively small, particularly for C4 species.  相似文献

Paragonimus westermani is a tissue migrating parasite in the early stage until arriving at lung, and most of the parasites spend their life spans there. Considerable immune responses including activation of macrophages are taken place during the residence of parasites in the host. However, concerning the immunologic defense mechanisms of the host against this parasite, only a few document is available so far. In this study, the cytotoxic effect of peritoneal macrophages under the presence of antibody and/or complement against metacercariae of P. westermani was investigated in vitro. Metacercariae were collected from the crayfish, Cambaroides similis and hatched out in Tyrode solution (pH 7.4). Plastic adherent cells from normal or infected rat (Wistar) peritoneal exudates were used as experimental macrophages. Polyclonal antibodies were obtained from infected rats and a cat. Cat IgG was fractioned with ion exchange chromatography. Fresh rabbit complement was used according to experimental scheme. Various combinations of peritoneal macrophages, normal or infected rat serum, complement and cat IgG were incubated at 36 degrees C in 5% CO2 incubator for 6, 14, 24 and 48 hours. The results obtained were as follows: 1. P. westermani infection activated peritoneal macrophages non-specifically and this activation induced increases of cell adherence and cytotoxicity on metacercariae. 2. In the presence of infected rat serum the antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity of peritoneal macrophages on metacercariae was significantly increased and showed a peak at 6-hour incubation. But the cytotoxic effect was markedly reduced after inactivation of complement and heat-labile IgE antibody by the heating of infected serum at 56 degrees C for 30 minutes. 3. The highest cytotoxic effect (100%) of concomitant incubation with IgG and complement showed 24 hours after incubation, although cell adherence was relatively low at 6-hour incubation and 0% at 24-hour incubation. 4. Coordinative functions of complement with serum and IgG were effective in cell adherence and in cytotoxicity, but it is not clear the independent role of complement on the macrophage-mediated cytotoxicity in this study. With these results it is assumed that P. westermani infection can induce the non-specific activation of peritoneal macrophages, and serum antibodies including IgE antibody might enhance the cytotoxicity by macrophages.  相似文献

Several recent studies have demonstrated that the freshwater pulmonate snail Lymnaea stagnalis is extremely sensitive to metals (Co, Ni, Pb) in chronic exposures. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the acute and chronic sensitivity of L. stagnalis to Cu and investigate the underlying mechanism(s) of toxic action. A 96-h LC50 of 31μg L(-1) Cu was estimated indicating L. stagnalis was moderately acutely sensitive to Cu relative to other aquatic organisms. However, in a 30-day chronic exposure using juvenile snails an EC20 of 1.8μg L(-1) Cu was estimated for snail growth making L. stagnalis the most sensitive organism tested to date for Cu. Hardness-based and BLM-based water quality criteria for Cu at the water quality conditions used in this study were 7.8 and 1.5μg L(-1), respectively, indicating L. stagnalis is significantly under-protected by hardness-based WQC. Investigations into the mechanism(s) of toxic action for Cu were conducted on young adult snails necessitating higher Cu exposures. Exposure to Cu at 12μg L(-1) resulted in no detectable effects on hemolymph osmolality, net Ca(2+) uptake, titratable acid excretion, or ammonia excretion. Exposure to 48μg L(-1) Cu was shown to significantly reduce (91%) net Ca(2+) uptake which is strongly correlated with shell deposition and corresponding snail growth. Snails exposed to 48μg L(-1) Cu also exhibited reduced ammonia excretion, a marked hemolymph acidosis, and a compensatory increase in titratable acid excretion. The reduction in net Ca(2+) uptake was hypothesized to be a secondary effect of Cu-induced inhibition of carbonic anhydrase, but no reduction in carbonic anhydrase activity was detected. Overall, it remains unclear whether inhibition of Ca(2+) uptake is a direct result of Cu exposure or, along with the other observed physiological effects, is secondary to an unidentified primary mode of toxic action. Given the hypersensitivity of L. stagnalis to Cu, further study into the mechanisms of action and effects of varying water chemistry on Cu toxicity is clearly warranted.  相似文献
