During 1998-2001, field studies were done to assess the efficacy of an integrated pest management (IPM) program using an action threshold and "reduced-risk" insecticides. The IPM program was compared with a conventional grower-based program. Program performance was evaluated based on management of Trichoplusia ni (Hiibner), Pieris (=Artogeia) rapae (L.), and Plutella xylostella (L.), as well as the economic impact of each program on net returns. The action threshold used in the IPM program consisted of 10% plants infested with T. ni larvae, based on previous small-plot experiment station trials. In all years of the study, the IPM program resulted in significantly lower percentages of plants infested than the conventional program or untreated check. The mean reduction in insecticide applications for the IPM program compared with the conventional program was 23.5%, whereas, on average, the costs of the IPM program were 46.0% higher than the conventional program. Pest reduction in the IPM program resulted in an average of 10.5% higher marketable yields than the conventional program. Percentages of marketable heads in the IPM program ranged from 82 to 99% and from 63 to 96% in the conventional program. Mean net returns for the IPM program exceeded the conventional program by $984.20/ha. These results indicated that the IPM program reduced insecticide use overall, even though costs of the IPM program, with either spinosad or indoxacarb, were sometimes higher. Overall, net returns of the IPM program were higher due to active pest scouting, improved application timing, and increases in marketable yield. Given the potential decrease in insecticide applications and increases in net profit resulting from this IPM program, additional analyses should be conducted to quantify the economic risk, or consistency of the results, to fully evaluate the benefits of the IPM program compared with a conventional program.  相似文献

In the present study, 40- to 60-year-old women with climacteric symptoms were placed on a 12-week structured education and exercise program to ascertain the effects of this program on climacteric symptoms, quality of life (QOL), and attitude towards exercise. A total of 35 women served as subjects. Twenty women were enrolled in an educational and exercise program that involved learning about menopause and participating in physical activity at least three times a week (Group E). For comparison, the other 15 women did not participate in this program and were instructed to refrain from exercising during study period (Group C). The effects of the 12-week interventional program on climacteric symptoms, QOL, and attitude towards exercise were thereby investigated. The program demonstrated significant effects on climacteric symptoms in terms of Kupperman index and psychosomatic symptoms, especially paresthesia and nervousness. In other words, climacteric symptoms improved significantly in Group E. Furthermore, scores for QOL and attitude towards exercise improved in Group E after the 12-week program; however, these trends did not reach statistical significance. Hence, the 12-week structured education and exercise program was shown to be effective in alleviating climacteric symptoms.  相似文献

A microcomputer program is described which has been used by first-year undergraduates throughout an investigation in microbiology, totalling five hours of practical work. The computer is used by students to check their suggestions of possible lines of investigation, the results of practical procedures, and the decisions made on the basis of this experimental evidence. The program offers advice when entries which are inadvisable or incorrect are entered thus providing guidance without usurping student control of the investigation. Evidence for the effectiveness of this program is presented and the potential for this type of consultative program in other areas is indicated. Based on this experience, advice is offered on the general design of this type of program.  相似文献

A computer program for implicit regression of the Hill equation. The fundamentals for the regression of implicit functions following the Gauss method are dealt with. Basing on these fundamentals a program for the regression of the Hill equation is described. The binding constant, the Hill coefficient and end extinction can be estimated. In contrast to the traditional program of health assessment of schoolchildren based on periodic physical examination, the program described in this paper is based on the integration of information and data obtained by observation through the school year from parents, teachers and the school nurse, who coordinates the program. The numbers and the types of problems and the date on which they were identified are compared in an experimental group of 557 kindergarten children and a matched control group of 498 children in whom the traditional program was maintained. For problems of hearing, enuresis, learning and behaviour the number of cases detected was significantly greater in the experimental group than in the control group. Each element of the proposed program is analysed and the advantages of an integrated approach to health assessment of schoolchildren are underlined.  相似文献

In order to understand the mechanism of protein folding and to assist the rational de-novo design of fast-folding, non-aggregating and stable artificial enzymes it is very helpful to be able to simulate protein folding reactions and to predict the structures of proteins and other biomacromolecules. Here, we use a method of computer programming called "evolutionary computer programming" in which a program evolves depending on the evolutionary pressure exerted on the program. In the case of the presented application of this method on a computer program for folding simulations, the evolutionary pressure exerted was towards faster finding deep minima in the energy landscape of protein folding. Already after 20 evolution steps, the evolved program was able to find deep minima in the energy landscape more than 10 times faster than the original program prior to the evolution process.  相似文献

An algorithm and a program have been developed which enableoptimal alignments of biological sequences on an 8–bitmicrocomputer. The compiled program can process sequences upto 1000 residues on a Commodore 64. This paper reports on the first test of the value of an online curriculum in social intelligence (SI). Built from current social and cognitive neuroscience research findings, the 50 session SI program was administered, with facilitation in Spanish by classroom instructors, to 207 students from Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid as part of their undergraduate classes. All materials were translated into Castilian Spanish, including outcome measures of SI that have been used in prior studies to provide valid estimates of two key components of social intelligence: 1) Sensitivity to others and 2) confidence in one’s capacity to manage social situations. Pre- and Posttest were administered to participants in the SI training, and also to 87 students in similar classes who did not receive the program who served as the control group. Gender and emotional intelligence levels at pretest also were examined as potential individual differences that might affect the impact of the program on study outcomes. Repeated measures ANOVAs on study outcomes revealed significant increases, from pre to post, in most measures of social intelligence for program participants in comparison to controls, with no effects of gender or age on program effectiveness. Prior scores on emotional intelligence were not a prerequisite for learning from the program. Some findings suggest ways the program may be improved to have stronger effects. Nonetheless, the findings indicate that the SI program tested here shows considerable promise as a means to increase the willingness of young adults to take the perspective of others and enhance their efficacy for initiating and sustaining positive social connections.  相似文献

The Katalyst intervention program was piloted in fifth-grade classrooms at two Appalachian schools during the 2017–18 academic year as a potential educational resource to tackle the rising rates of obesity and chronic diseases in this region. The program consisted of four 60-minute modules, each based on a specific organ system. Each module incorporated hands-on lessons in physiology with an emphasis on preventing chronic disease through diet, nutrition, physical activity, and abstinence from drug and tobacco use. The modules were led by medical students and undergraduate volunteers who completed a two-day training. A 37-item survey assessing knowledge and perceptions regarding healthy lifestyles was administered to fifth grade participants prior to and following the intervention in order to assess the impact of the program. Additionally, educators at intervention schools were given a questionnaire post-intervention to provide feedback on the program. This paper describes the rationale, program design and execution, and conclusion of the Katalyst intervention program. It is anticipated that this program will reinforce current educational standards regarding diet, nutrition and physical activity in order to empower target students to establish healthy lifestyle behaviors and that programs modeled after the Katalyst curriculum may serve as a novel, viable option to health educators.  相似文献

Computer-aided learning (CAL) techniques are now used at many levels of biological education. Many of these CAL programs are written by teachers because suitable material is unavailable. However, the amount of time required for the design and coding of a reliable CAL program can deter many teachers. Any CAL program can be split into two components: the ‘non-educational’ part, for example, program control structures, input–output routines; and the educational material. The ‘non-educational’ component can be organized into a program shell which can then be used with a wide range of biological topics. A program shell, for use on the BBC microcomputer, is described with an example of an application. The example is ‘LINKAGE’, a genetics teaching program.  相似文献

A package of programs (run by a management program called TREECON)was developed for the construction and drawing of evolutionarytrees. The program MATRIX calculates dissimilarity values andcan perform bootstrap analysis on nucleic acid sequences. TREEimplements different evolutionary tree constructing methodsbased on distance matrices. Because some of these methods produceunrooted evolutionary trees, a program ROOT places a root onthe tree. Finally, the program DRAW draws the evolutionary tree,changes its size or topology, and produces drawings suitablefor publication. Whereas MATRIX is suited only for nucleic acids,the modules TREE, ROOT and DRAW are applicable to any kind ofdissimilarity matrix. SChiSM2 is a web server-based program for creating web pages that include interactive molecular graphics using the freely-available applet, Jmol, for illustration. Community based rehabilitation program in people with musculoskeletal conditions was evaluated using Dartmouth COOP Functional Health Assessment Charts/WONCA (COOP/WONCA charts). The program consisted of educative and training protocol in a primary healthcare setting. It had two parts, both with six visits, in the first part three times a week and in the second part once a week. Clients with musculoskeletal conditions (N = 204) were included if they agreed to take active part in the rehabilitation process. The first part of the program was completed by 77 clients, and complete program by 52 subjects. Positive changes on the COOP/WONCA charts were achieved by more than 50% of the subjects that completed the program, in all categories but Social Activities. The program proved effective in terms of short-term evaluation with COOP/WONCA charts in those that complete the program. The high dropout rate and long-term efficiency have yet to be investigated.  相似文献

Abstract

This article describes the implementation and evaluation of a sport-based life skills and community service program. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the impact of a combined life skills and community service program on adolescents' prosocial values. The program was part of a national golf and life skills enrichment academy for adolescents (n = 100). It was hypothesized that the life skills component would have a significant impact on adolescents' prosocial values and that participants (n = 42) who were involved in the community service component following the program, when compared to a comparison group (n = 23), would maintain their increased levels of prosocial values. Results indicated that the program had a significant positive impact on adolescents' prosocial values and that the community service experience positively impacted the adolescents' levels of empathic concern and social responsibility. These results are consistent with existing research on participating in community service.  相似文献

The taxonomic knowledge gap and lack of knowledge on species-level diversity has been a global concern within conservation biology through the recent two decades. As a national response, Finland has funded a Research Program of Poorly Known and Threatened Forest Species from the year 2003. The program is an essential part of the knowledge base applied in Finnish forest policy. The present paper evaluates the outcomes of the program, covering scientific publication, training, taxonomic coverage, increased knowledge on boreal forest biodiversity and awareness rising. The ongoing program has been funded by 6.5 million Euros to date including 59 projects. The program has produced 19 master’s theses and six doctoral theses. Due to their expertise the graduated biologists have been employed in environmental administration or become researchers. The program has produced 163 refereed scientific articles, 104 of which are recognized by the Web of Science; with an average impact factor of 1.81. The results of the program include 15 genera and 348 species new to science, and 60 genera and 1,664 species to Finland’s list of known species. Due to new knowledge gathered in the program 3,000–4,000 species could be included in the most recent National Red List assessment. The publishing of identification books on local language has proved as the most effective way of advancing general species knowledge among the public and end-users. The high number of new species to science from a biodiversity-poor boreal country describes the scale of the huge work still be done in describing the global species-level diversity. The program has achieved its goals in many ways, but the program leaves out a large part of the species that do not occur in forest biotopes. Moreover, the funding has decreased through the years despite the international goal of halting the world’s biodiversity loss has not been met.  相似文献

British Columbia has funded a program for licensure for international medical graduates since 1992, providing 2 entry positions per year for postgraduate training. Each year 25-35 candidates are eligible for the program, 13-16 enter the evaluation process, 4 go on to a clinical evaluation and 2 are offered funding by the Ministry of Health. Other candidates may access community funding if they meet the requirements of the program. Twenty of 26 candidates have successfully completed the postgraduate training and achieved full licensure; 6 are still in training. In this article we describe the development of the program, the evaluation and selection process, characteristics of the candidates and the outcomes of the program.  相似文献

This paper describes a program for a real-time interactive modification of furanose sugar pucker. The resulting change of conformation is visualized instantaneously on the display screen of an Evans and Sutherland PS300, the picture system on which the program was implemented. The program is accessible as a new function, named PUCK, in the molecular modeling system FRODO. This new possibility fills the lack of degrees of freedom for modeling nucleic acids.  相似文献

A compact new computer program for handling nucleic acid sequence data is presented. It consists of a number of different subsets, which may be used according to a given code system. The program is designed for the determination of restriction enzyme and other recognition sites in correlation with translation patterns, and allows tabulation of codon frequencies and protein molecular weights within specified gene boundaries. The program is especially designed for detection of overlapping genes. The language, is FORTRAN and thus the program may be used on small computers; it may also be used without any prior computer experience. Copies are available on request.  相似文献
