Recent studies in a variety of species have shown that polyandrous females are somehow able to bias paternity against their relatives postcopulation, although how they do so remains unknown. Field crickets readily mate with their siblings, but when also mated to an unrelated male, they produce disproportionately fewer inbred offspring. We use a new competitive microsatellite polymerase chain reaction technique to determine the contribution of males to stored sperm and subsequent paternity of offspring. Paternity is almost completely predicted by how much sperm from a particular male is stored, and unrelated males contribute more sperm to storage and have a corresponding higher paternity success.  相似文献

In many species, each female pairs with a single male for the purpose of rearing offspring, but may also engage in extra-pair copulations. Despite the prevalence of such promiscuity, whether and how multiple mating benefits females remains an open question. Multiple mating is typically thought to be favoured primarily through indirect benefits (i.e. heritable effects on the fitness of offspring). This prediction has been repeatedly tested in a variety of species, but the evidence has been equivocal, perhaps because such studies have focused on pre-reproductive survival rather than lifetime fitness of offspring. Here, we show that in a songbird, the dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis), both male and female offspring produced by extra-pair fertilizations have higher lifetime reproductive success than do offspring sired within the social pair. Furthermore, adult male offspring sired via extra-pair matings are more likely to sire extra-pair offspring (EPO) themselves, suggesting that fitness benefits to males accrue primarily through enhanced mating success. By contrast, female EPO benefited primarily through enhanced fecundity. Our results provide strong support for the hypothesis that the evolution of extra-pair mating by females is favoured by indirect benefits and shows that such benefits accrue much later in the offspring's life than previously documented.  相似文献

When the adult sex ratio differs between years in local populations, but still is predictable between adjacent years, it has been proposed that the best strategy would be to bias the offspring sex ratio in favour of the rare sex. We tested this hypothesis using a data set of great reed warbler offspring, sexed by molecular techniques, that were collected over 11 breeding seasons at two adjacent reed marshes. Three important assumptions for this hypothesis are fulfilled in the studied great reed warbler population. First, a substantial proportion of great reed warblers are living in small local populations where sex ratio distortions would be sufficiently large and common. Second, breeding adults and their offspring return to breed in the local population to a high degree. Third, females have a possibility to assess the breeding sex ratio before laying their eggs. At our study site, the breeding sex ratio was positively correlated between successive years. However, contrary to our prediction, female great reed warblers seemed not to adjust their offspring sex ratio in relation to the local breeding sex ratio.  相似文献

Males frequently remain in close proximity to their mate immediately postcopulation. This behavior has generally been interpreted as a guarding tactic designed to reduce the likelihood that a rival male can rapidly displace the ejaculate of the guarding male [1, 2]. Such attempts by males to control their mates represent a potential source of conflict [3-5], but guarding behaviors in species where it is difficult for males to control their mates suggest that conflict is not inevitable [6, 7]. We employed a network of infrared video cameras to study a wild population of individually marked and genotyped field crickets (Gryllus campestris). Lone females or males suffer similar rates of predation, but when a pair is attacked, the male allows the female priority access to their burrow, and in doing so dramatically increases his probability of being killed. In compensation for this increased predation risk, paired males mate more frequently and father more of the female's offspring. By staying with a male, females increase the sperm contribution of preferred males as well as reducing their predation risk. In contrast to conclusions based on previous lab studies, our field study suggests that mate guarding can evolve in a context of cooperation rather than conflict between the sexes.  相似文献

Eggs are an immobile, vulnerable stage of development and their success often depends on the oviposition decisions of the mother. Studies show that female animals, and sometimes males, may invest parental resources in order to increase the survival of their offspring. Here, we describe a unique form of parental investment in offspring survival. The seed beetle Mimosestes amicus may lay eggs singly, or may cover eggs with additional egg(s). This egg stacking serves to significantly reduce the mortality of the protected egg from parasitism by the parasitic wasp, Uscana semifumipennis. The smaller top eggs serve only as protective shields; they are inviable, and wasps that develop in them suffer negative fitness consequences. Further, we found egg stacking to be inducible; M. amicus increase the number of stacks they lay when parasitoids are present. However, stacking invokes a cost. When wasps are absent, beetles lay more single eggs, and produce more offspring, highlighting the adaptive value of this extraordinary example of behavioural plasticity in parental investment.  相似文献

The outcome and protective efficacy of maternal antibodies elicited by DNA immunization to the large (L) hepadnavirus envelope protein were studied using the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) model. Following genetic immunization of breeding ducks with a DHBV L protein gene-bearing plasmid, specific and highly neutralizing antibodies were transferred from the sera of immunized ducks, via the egg yolk, to the progeny of vaccinees. Interestingly, large amounts (60 to 100 mg/egg) of high-titer and L protein-specific yolk immunoglobulins (immunoglobulin Y) accumulated in the egg yolk. These results suggest that eggs from genetically immunized avians may represent a potent source of DNA-designed antibodies specific to viral antigen. Importantly, these antibodies are vertically transmitted and protect offspring against high-titer DHBV challenge.  相似文献

Promiscuity is frequently used to describe animal mating behaviour, and especially to describe multiple mating by females. Yet this use of the term is incorrect, perhaps reflecting an erroneous adoption of common language to pique reader interest. We evaluated the patterns of use and misuse of the word ‘promiscuity’ in a representative journal of animal behaviour. This survey highlights how inappropriately the term is used, and how it can conceal critical features of animal mating strategies with intriguing evolutionary significance. Further analysis of the scientific impact of papers identified by the term promiscuous or polyandrous revealed that the former were cited less frequently. We argue that using promiscuity to describe animal mating strategies is anthropomorphic, inaccurate, and potentially misleading. Consistent with other biological disciplines, the word promiscuity should be used to describe indiscriminate mating behaviour only, and that polygyny and polyandry should be used to describe male and female mating frequency respectively.  相似文献

The present study aimed to identify the effects of maternal cadmium (Cd(2+)) exposure on the mRNA expression of mt2 (metallothionein-2) and smtB (similar to metallothionein-B) in female zebrafish (Danio rerio) and their offspring (F1 larvae). Zebrafish females were exposed to 0, 8.9, 17.8, and 35.6 μM Cd(2+) for 72 h, and their ovaries and F1 larvae were collected to measure their Cd(2+) contents and their smtB and mt2 mRNA expression. Cd(2+) contents and the mRNA expression of smtB and mt2 in F1 larvae all showed positive correlations with the maternal Cd(2+) treatment dose. The mt2 was 1.9- to 3.4-fold higher than smtB in F1 larvae. Furthermore, F1 larvae had noticeably enhanced Cd(2+) tolerance after maternal Cd(2+) treatment. These results demonstrate that maternal Cd(2+) was transferred to larval fish and induced mt2 and smtB mRNA expression to protect larva against the impacts of Cd(2+). In female ovaries, mt2 expression showed a noticeable increase after exposure to a metal environment, while smtB did not show exactly the same effect. The study can only conclude that smtB might have a much different role other than just protecting against the impacts of metals.  相似文献

SH3 domains are small but important domains in cell-signaling and function through protein-protein interactions. Their promiscuous nature in binding to polyproline peptides makes them much more important because many SH3 domains from different proteins bind to different proteins having polyproline template on their surface. Very subtle changes in the sequence of SH3 domains and the binding peptides determine the specificity of the peptide binding. Recent observation that SH3 domains bind to non- proline peptides makes the scenario of peptide binding involving SH3 domains complicated. If domain swapped dimerization as observed in Eps8-SH3 domain also binds different peptides, it proves the versatility of the SH3 domains in binding to peptides in various ways. An overview of the promiscuity of SH3 domains has been discussed.  相似文献

By the help of questionnaire of young peoples (18-25 years) was received an information about their psycobiological likeness to mother, father, grandmother, grandfather. From 788 girls likeness to mother marked in 50.51%, father--37.06%, grandmother--9.77%, grandfather--2.66%. Boys (416 answers) marked likeness in 34.13% with mother, in 52.64% with father, in 3.85% with grandmother, in 9.38% with grandfather. So, the girls more frequent showed there likeness to ancestors of women sex, and boys--to men sex. Authors thinking, that this thing is conditioned not only by heredity cytoplasmatic factors, but by alternative action of womanish and masculine sexual hormones.  相似文献

We have begun a search for heritable variation in X-chromosome inactivation pattern in normal females to determine whether there is a genetic effect on the imprinting of X-chromosome inactivation in humans. We have performed a quantitative analysis of X-chromosome inactivation in lymphocytes from mothers in normal, three-generation families. Eight mothers and 12 grandmothers exhibited evidence of highly skewed patterns of X-chromosome inactivation. We observed that the male offspring of females with skewed X-inactivation patterns were three times more likely to inherit alleles at loci that were located on the inactive X chromosome (Xi) than the active X chromosome (Xa). The region of the X chromosome for which this phenomenon was observed extends from XP11 to -Xq22. We have also examined X-chromosome inactivation patterns in 21 unaffected mothers of male bilateral sporadic retinoblastoma patients. Six of these mothers had skewed patterns of X-chromosome inactivation. In contrast to the tendency for male offspring of skewed mothers from nondisease families to inherit alleles from the inactive X chromosome, five of the six affected males inherited the androgen receptor alleles from the active X chromosome of their mother. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In Drosophila melanogaster, biological rhythms, aggression and mating are modulated by group size and composition. However, the fitness significance of this group effect is unknown. By varying the composition of groups of males and females, we show that social context affects reproductive behaviour and offspring genetic diversity. Firstly, females mating with males from the same strain in the presence of males from a different strain are infecund, analogous to the Bruce effect in rodents, suggesting a social context-dependent inbreeding avoidance mechanism. Secondly, females mate more frequently in groups composed of males from more than one strain; this mitigates last male sperm precedence and increases offspring genetic diversity. However, smell-impaired Orco mutant females do not increase mating frequency according to group composition; this indicates that social context-dependent changes in reproductive behaviour depend on female olfaction, rather than direct male-male interactions. Further, variation in mating frequency in wild-type strains depends on females and not males. The data show that group composition can affect variance in the reproductive success of its members, and that females play a central role in this process. Social environment can thus influence the evolutionary process.  相似文献

Birds have demonstrated a remarkable ability to manipulate offspring sex. Previous studies suggest that treatment with hormones can stimulate females to manipulate offspring sex before ovulation. For example, chronic treatments with corticosterone, the primary stress hormone produced by birds, stimulated significant skews toward female offspring. It has been suggested that corticosterone acts by influencing which sex chromosome is donated by the heterogametic female bird into the ovulated ovarian follicle. However, it is difficult to pinpoint when in developmental time corticosterone affects offspring sex, because in previous studies corticosterone treatment was given over a long period of time. We treated laying hens with acute high-dose corticosterone injections 5 h before the predicted time of ovulation and quantified the sexes of the subsequently ovulated eggs to determine whether mechanisms exist by which corticosterone can skew offspring sex ratios just before ovulation. We hypothesized that an injection of corticosterone coincident with segregation of the sex chromosomes would stimulate hens to produce more female than male offspring. Contrary to our predictions, hens injected with corticosterone produced a significant bias toward male offspring, nearly 83%. These results suggest that acute corticosterone treatment during meiosis I can influence primary sex ratios in birds, potentially through nonrandom chromosome segregation. Furthermore, acute corticosterone exposure, compared with chronic exposure, may act through different mechanisms to skew offspring sex.  相似文献

Cryptococcus gattii is a primary pathogenic basidiomycetous yeast comprising four genotypic groups. Here we present data on two mitochondrial loci (MtLrRNA and ATP6 ). Two of the genotypic groups, namely amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP)5/VGIII and AFLP6/VGII, formed monophyletic lineages. The AFLP4/VGI genotypic group, however, possessed five different mitochondrial genotypes that did not form a monophyletic lineage. The majority of these isolates contained mitochondrial genomes that are partially identical to those found in isolates belonging to AFLP6/VGII, which is causing the ongoing and expanding Vancouver Island outbreak. Two out of four AFLP7/VGIV isolates contained an AFLP4/VGI allele of MtLrRNA. These observations are best explained by assuming a process of mitochondrial recombination. If this is true, mitochondrial recombination seems possible between cells belonging to different genotypic groups of C. gattii , especially between AFLP6/VGII or AFLP7/VGIV and AFLP4/VGI. We also have to assume that mitochondria, most likely, were transferred from cells belonging to AFLP6/VGII to AFLP4/VGI. As such a process of mitochondrial recombination is only possible after cell–cell conjugation, this may also allow the further exchange of genetic material, for example nuclear or plasmid in nature, between different genotypes of C. gattii . This may be relevant as it may provide a possible mechanism contributing to the modulation of virulence attributes of isolates, such as has been observed in the ongoing Vancouver Island outbreak of C. gattii .  相似文献

In 218 primigravida rats of Wistar strain with body mass 200-250 g radiosensitivity during the whole period of pregnancy has been studied after a single total gamma-radiation with 60Co given in LD50 2.0 Gy. The multifactor analysis includes: dynamics of the body mass of the pregnant rats, ability to implantation and pregnancy, duration of pregnancy, number of births that failed, body mass loss during delivery, death of the embryos during the antenatal period, number of viable offsprings, dynamics of body mass in the offsprings and their viability during 30 days after birth, time for covering with fur and eyes opening, developmental anomalies etc. Quantitative and qualitative postradiative disorders of the intrauterine and postnatal development of the offsprings are described. The most sensitive days of pregnancy are revealed (the 1st--3d and the 9th--11th days).  相似文献

Grey seal females transfer large amounts of energy to their pups during the brief lactation period. The costs of lactation have been measured using weight changes of mother and pup pairs. Large females come ashore to give birth earlier in the season and lose weight more rapidly than smaller females. The sex ratio of Grey seal pups born is skewed towards males in the early part of the breeding season. Male pups are larger at birth and gain weight more rapidly than female pups, and their mothers show a correspondingly faster rate of weight loss than mothers of female pups. The energy costs of gestation and lactation to a Grey seal mother are 31 GJ for male pups and2–8 GJ for female pups. Males are therefore 10% more costly in energy terms to raise to weaning. Because, on average, large females arrive at breeding sites before smaller animals, biased results on weight changes would be obtained from methods which do not use repeated weighings. We suggest that the high efficiencies of lactation estimated for Harp seals compared with other phocid seals could be accounted for by such a bias.  相似文献
