Dugesia japonica Ichikawa et Kawakatsu, 1964, is a common and polymorphic species of freshwater planarian distributed widely in the Far East. In 1976 the geographic populations were separated into 2 subspecies (D.j.japonica and D.j. ryukyuensis). The taxonomy of this species is reconsidered once again from the morphological, anatomical, histological, and karyological viewpoints. From the result of these studies, D.j. ryukyuensis is elevated to the rank of species: D. ryukyuensis Kawakatsu, 1976. D. japonica (n = 8, 2x = 16, 3x = 24) differs from D. ryukyuensis (n = 7, 2x = 14, 3x = 21) in having an asymmetrical penis papilla without a well-developed valve surrounding its basal part, and a well-developed vagina (distribution: the Japanese Islands, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, and Primorskiy, Northeast Siberia, in Russia). D. ryukyuensis is characterized by an asymmetrical penis papilla with a well-developed valve surrounding its basal part, and a less-developed vagina (distribution: the Southwest Islands of Japan).  相似文献

A review of previous studies on the taxonomy, karyology and chorology of a polymorphic species Dugesia japonica from the Far East is presented. Two subspecies are now known: D. j. japonica (n = 8, 2x = 16, 3x = 24) and D. j. ryukyuensis (n = 7, 2x = 14, 3x = 21). An attempt has also been made to determine the definition of the B-chromosome as LB and SB and the variation of the karyotypes of both subspecies is described. Every known karyotype of D. japonica is classified into six groups (see Table 2). D. japonica from many localities has a diploid karyotype (2x), a triploid karyotype (3x) and an orthoploidic mixoploid karyotype of 2x & 3x. The chromosome numbers of Dugesia japonica Ichikawa et Kawakatsu, 1964, are n = 8, 2x = 16 and 3x = 24; those of Dugesia ryukyuensis Kawakatsu, 1976, are n = 7, 2x = 14 and 3x = 21. The karyotypes of both species include diploid, triploid and mixoploid; aneuploidic and mixoaneuploidic karyotypes may occur. In 785 specimens studied of D. japonica, the occurrence rates of specimens having each karyotype are substantially the same (29–37%). Diploid sexual specimens represented nearly 10% of the total and virtually no triploid or mixoploid sexual specimens were found. The diploid karyotype can be inherited by both sexual and asexual reproduction; the triploid and mixoploid karyotypes will be inherited only by asexual reproduction. In 51 specimens studied of D. ryukyuensis, the different karyotypes are diploid (ca 39%), triploid (ca 57%) and mixoploid (ca 4%). Diploid sexual specimens represented nearly 25% of the total; sexual specimens with tripooidic karyotypes made up nearly 27%. The diploid, triploid and mixoploid karyotypes were also found in juveniles hatched from cocoons. The diploid karytyype is inherited by both sexual and asexual reproductions; the other karyotypes may be inherited by parthenogenesis or self-fertilization (including pseudogamy) and asexual reproduction.  相似文献

To investigate the distribution of clubroot of a cruciferous weed, Cardamine flexuosa, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, field surveys were conducted in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Okinawa, and major isolated islands in Japan during 1993–2004. The disease was newly recorded in Aomori and nine islands in five different prefectures, including Sado (Niigata), Oki (Shimane), Mishima (Yamaguchi), Tsushima, Iki and Goto (Nagasaki), and Koshiki, Yakushima, and Tanegashima (Kagoshima). The diseased plants were not found in Hokkaido and Okinawa (islands of Okinawa, Kumejima, Ishigaki, Iriomote, and Kohama). However, inoculation tests showed that most C. flexuosa collected from Hokkaido and Okinawa included many susceptible plants. The result suggests that resistance of the plants is not the reason that the disease was not found in these areas. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

Two acorn barnacles, Tetraclita japonica japonica and Tetraclita japonica formosana, have been recently reclassified as two subspecies, because they are morphologically similar and genetically indistinguishable in mitochondrial DNA sequences. The two barnacles are distinguishable by parietes colour and exhibit parapatric distributions, coexisting in Japan, where T. j. formosana is very low in abundance. Here we investigated the genetic differentiation between the subspecies using 209 polymorphic amplified fragment length polymorphism markers and 341 individuals from 12 locations. The subspecies are genetically highly differentiated (ΦCT = 0.267). Bayesian analysis and principal component analysis indicate the presence of hybrids in T. j. formosana samples from Japan. Strong differentiation between the northern and southern populations of T. j. japonica was revealed, and a break between Taiwan and Okinawa was also found in T. j. formosana. The differentiation between the two taxa at individual loci does not deviate from neutral expectation, suggesting that the oceanographic pattern which restricts larval dispersal is a more important factor than divergent selection in maintaining genetic and phenotypic differentiation. The T. j. formosana in Japan are probably recent migrants from Okinawa, and their presence in Japan may represent a poleward range shift driven by global warming. This promotes hybridization and might lead to a breakdown of the boundary between the subspecies. However, both local adaptation and larval dispersal are crucial in determining the population structure within each subspecies. Our study provides new insights into the interplay of local adaptation and dispersal in determining the distribution and genetic structure of intertidal biota and the biogeography of the northwestern Pacific.  相似文献

Reported in this paper is a karyomorphological study on one natural population of each of eight varieties in theSpiraea japonica complex. The interphase and mitotic prophase can be classified into the simple chromocenter type and the proximal type, respectively. The metaphase karyotypes of the eight varieties were formulated as follows:S. japonica var.japonica: 2n=18=14m+2sm+2st;S. japonica var.acuta: 2n=18=11m+4sm+3st;S. japonica var.incisa: 2n=18=12m+4sm+2st;S. japonica var.stellaris: 2n=18=15m+1sm+2st;S. japonica var.acuminata: 2n=18=14m+2sm+2st;S. japonica var.ovalifolia: 2n=18=10m+2sm+2st+4t;S. japonica var.glabra: 2n=18=10m+4sm+4st;S. japonica var.fortunei: 2n=36=17m+16sm+3st. Karyomorphological study reveals that the chromosome numbers within the complex are stable, and that karyomorphological divergence between the varieties lies mainly in chromosome size and organization. Based on the karyomorphological data and geographical distribution of the complex, the differentiation pattern as well as evolutionary mechanism of the complex is evaluated.  相似文献

The green anole Anolis carolinensis invaded the Ogasawara Islands in Japan, drove various native species to extinction, and its distribution expanded 14 years after initial establishment. A. carolinensis invaded Okinawa Island, but it has not expanded its distribution in more than 25 years, although its density is extremely high in the southern region. To determine whether A. carolinensis has the potential to expand its distribution on Okinawa Island, we performed phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial ND2 DNA sequences to study the origin of A. carolinensis that invaded Okinawa Island. We further used a species distribution model (MaxEnt) based on the distribution of native populations in North America to identify ecologically suitable areas on Okinawa Island. Nucleotide sequence analysis shows that the invader A. carolinensis originated in the western part of the Gulf Coast and inland areas of the United States and that a portion of the anoles on Okinawa was not introduced via the Ogasawara Islands. The MaxEnt predictions indicate that most areas in Okinawa Island are suitable for A. carolinensis. Therefore, A. carolinensis may have the potential to expand its distribution in Okinawa Island. The predictions indicate that habitat suitability is high in areas of high annual mean temperature and urbanized areas. The values of precipitation in summer in the northern region of Okinawa Island were higher compared with those of North America, which reduced the habitat suitability in Okinawa Island. Adaptation to low temperatures, an increase in the mean temperature through global warming, and an increase in open environments through land development will likely expand the distribution of A. carolinensis in Okinawa Island. Therefore, we must continue to monitor the introduced populations and be alert to the possibility that city planning that increases open environments may cause their range to expand.  相似文献

The second report ofFusarium globosum is based on strains isolated from wheat in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, in subtropical Japan. Morphological features of the Japanese isolates are described. These strains show different reactions in conidiogenesis to light conditions. Under continuous BLB light, falcate sporodochial conidia are typically induced, but production of aerial globose conidia is suppressed. In two of the strains, clavate conidia became longer under BLB light. Application of both, complete darkness and continuous BLB light, is recommended as standard light conditions to cultureFusarium isolates. Two new species of Agaricales are described and illustrated from Yaeyama Islands, southwestern Japan: (1) Amanita rubromarginata sp. nov. (section Caesareae Sing. ex Sing. in the subgenus Amanita), forming brownish-orange then reddish-yellow pileus, a pale yellow, squamulose stipe with a thin, membranous, reddish-orange annulus and a thick, saccate volva, and reddish-orange marginate lamellae, found in oak forests of Ishigaki Island; and (2) Tylopilus obscureviolaceus sp. nov. (section Tylopilus), having dark purple basidiomata, white, bitter, unchanging flesh, and a finely purplish-reticulate stipe, found in oak forests of Iriomote Island.  相似文献

To examine the local distribution of Dasylepida ishigakiensis Niijima et Kinoshita larvae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) on Miyako Island and Ishigaki Island, a survey was conducted in hayfields on the two Islands in February and March 2011. Symptoms of white grub infestation, such as patches of wilted grass and thin, yellow grass stands, were observed in some of the 20 hayfields surveyed on Miyako Island. Three species of white grub were observed there: D. ishigakiensis, Anomala cpustulata cpustulata Matsumura in Hirayama, and Anomala albopilosa (Hope), in the ratio 92:7:1, respectively. The mean population density of D. ishigakiensis in the hayfields was 54.3 m?2 and the maximum was 225 m?2. No significant relationship was found between the damage levels of hay grass and the D. ishigakiensis larval densities. In contrast, no damage was observed in the 14 hayfields surveyed on Ishigaki Island, although some D. ishigakiensis larvae were found at a low density in 4 hayfields. In 2006, no D. ishigakiensis larvae were found in sugarcane fields on this island in a separately conducted intensive survey. These observations may suggest that D. ishigakiensis larvae are present in hayfields at a low density but that few individuals occur in sugarcane fields on Ishigaki Island.  相似文献

A new gobiid species,Acanthogobius insularis, is described from 88 specimens collected from Amami-oshima Island and Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan. Fungus‐growing termites (subfamily Macrotermitinae) cultivate the symbiotic basidiomycete fungus Termitomyces in their fungus comb to digest cellulosic materials and to supply nitrogen‐rich fungal diet. In Japan, the fungus‐growing termite Odontotermes formosanus is found on the Yaeyama Islands and Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. Odontotermes formosanus is thought to have been recently and artificially introduced to Okinawa Island as its distribution is discontinuous and restricted to small areas. Previous DNA analyses revealed that two types of Termitomyces, namely Termitomyces sp. Type A and Termitomyces sp. Type B, whose fruiting bodies correspond to Termitomyces microcarpus‐like pseudorhiza‐lacking small mushroom and Termitomyces intermedius, respectively, are cultivated by O. formosanus on the Yaeyama Islands. However, information about the Termitomyces types cultivated by O. formosanus on Okinawa Island is limited. To define the fungal types cultivated by O. formosanus on Okinawa Island, I developed a diagnostic polymerase chain reaction method using primer sets specific to the nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences consisting of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) and 5.8S rDNA of Termitomyces not using fungal mycelium, but using the termite gut metagenome including fungal DNA as a template. The results indicated that the same two Termitomyces types from Iriomote Island are cultivated by O. formosanus on Okinawa Island. The distribution pattern of Termitomyces types on Okinawa Island showed that Termitomyces sp. Type A is limited to the mountainous side of Sueyoshi Park, despite Termitomyces sp. Type B being widely distributed in the area in which O. formosanus is found. This finding implies that O. formosanus on Okinawa Island was recently introduced from Iriomote Island to Sueyoshi Park.  相似文献

The macroalgae asSociated with the mangrove vegetation of the Japanese Islands Okinawa, Ishigaki and Iriomote were investigated. The flora includes members of the red algal genera Bostrychia, Caloglossa and Catenella, as well as the brown alga Dictyotopsis propagulifera Troll, which may be considered typical of mangrove forests. The distribution of the low molecular weight carbohydrates sorbitol, dulcitol, mannitol and floridoside was studied in the mangrove algae. Their physiological role as osmoprotectors was assessed by investigating the effect of salinity on the intracellular sorbitol and dulcitol concentration in Bostrychia pinnata J. Tanaka et Chihara and on the mannitol content in D. propagulifera. In both species the polyol values increased with increasing salinity.  相似文献

Severe coral bleaching occurred throughout the tropics in 1997/98. We report high-resolution skeletal oxygen isotope (18O) and carbon isotope (13C) microprofiles for bleached corals from Pandora Reef, Great Barrier Reef, and Ishigaki Island, Japan, in order to examine the ability of Porites corals to record clear signals of bleaching. Analysis of the annual cycle in 18O revealed abrupt reductions in skeletal extension immediately after the 1997–98 summer temperature maximum, indicating that bleaching inhibits coral calcification. Skeletal 13C in the Ishigaki corals showed lower values during bleaching, indicating depressed coral metabolism associated with a reduction in calcification. In contrast, microprofiles of skeletal 13C from the shaded sides of Pandora Reef corals exhibited little change, possibly because algal photosynthesis was already slow prior to bleaching, thus subduing the 13C-response to bleaching. Comparison of 18O microprofiles from bleached corals with instrumental temperature records showed that Porites corals can recover following 5 months with little skeletogenesis. The results indicate that isotopic microprofiling may be the key to identifying gaps in coral growth that are diagnostic of past bleaching events. We have tested this hypothesis using blue UV fluorescent bands to guide us to coral skeleton where isotope microprofiling identifies bleaching events in 1986, 1989, and 1990. These events, detected by proxy, suggest that coral bleaching may have occurred more commonly on Ishigaki Island than previously recorded.  相似文献

I review the distribution of genus Alouattain the Marajó Archipelago based on geographic variation of pelage color patterns. Specific differences exist among the labeled specimens at Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, which are confirmed via new field information from wild populations. The animals from Marajó, Caviana, and Mexiana Islands possess color patterns of Alouatta belzebul,while Alouatta seniculusis confirmed as the species that inhabits Gurupá Island. The high variability of pelage coloration of the animals from Marajó, Caviana, and Mexiana Islands includes all phenotypes formerly designated as different subspecies. The howler populations from these three islands belong to the same subspecies as those populations that inhabit the region of Tucurui dam reservoir (area 4). Finally, it seems that, as also suggested by chromosome studies, A. belzebulprobably comprises different epiphenotypes without taxonomic validity.  相似文献

Orcovita miruku, new species, is described from Ishigaki Island, southern Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Orcovita miruku is easily distinguished from the other congeners by the presence of three teeth (including external orbital angle) on the anterolateral margin of the carapace. Orcovita angulata may be allied to O. miruku, but there are a number of differences in the characters of the carapace and the ambulatory legs. The holotype, obtained from an anchiline pool in a limestone excavation, is the only specimen collected thus far, and this is the first record of an anchiline crab from Japan.  相似文献

The epiphytic orchid Luisia teres on Okinawa Island, the Ryukyus, Japan, sexually attracts male Protaetia beetles for pollination through floral scent. Here, the pollination system of L. teres on the Satsuma Peninsula, Kyushu, located approximately 600 km north of Okinawa Island, is reported. The inconspicuous flowers depend on the Cetoniinae beetles Protaetia orientalis submarumorea and Pseudotorynorrhina japonica, which both usually feed on fermented sap/ripe fruits, for pollination. The flower-visiting P. orientalis submarumorea beetles included both males and females, and pseudocopulation was never observed. Pollinaria removal and pollination were achieved while beetles fed on floral nectar. Although P. orientalis submarumorea did not necessarily remove pollinaria more frequently than Ps. japonica, the pollinaria attached precisely to the central part of their clypeus, unlike on Ps. japonica. Our findings suggest that a geographic divergence in the pollination system occurs in Japanese L. teres. In the Ryukyus, the orchid adopts a specialized pollination system with only male-attractive olfactory stimuli, whereas in Kyushu it has a relatively more generalized system based on only a food reward.  相似文献

In this paper, four fungi collected in Nansei Islands are reported. One is Strasseria garciniae, which must be transferred to the genus Phyllosticta. This fungus was collected in Okinawa Main Island and Iriomote Island. The other three fungi are newly added to the Japanese fungal flora. Phyllosticta ghaesembillae on Codiaeum variegatum and Cercospora asplenii on Asplenium antiquum were collected in Yoron Island. The last one, Coniella australiensis on Eucalyptus robusta was collected in Okinawa Main Island. Their morphology and symptoms on the host plant are described, with some mycological notes.  相似文献

Genetic variation and gene flow in the scleractinian coral Goniastrea aspera (Verrill), found around the north–south Okinawa Islands, were studied using allozyme and starch gel electrophoresis. The relative contribution of sexual and asexual reproduction to recruitment was determined. Analysis of multilocus genotypes of samples, collected at least 3 m apart, identified a high number of unique genotypes (NG) relative to the number of individuals sampled (N) (mean NG: N=0.97±0.03 [SD]), and also highly observed genotypic diversity (GO) relative to expected genotypic diversity under Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (GE) (mean GO: GE=0.95±0.06 [SD]). These results suggest that the collected G. aspera propagated predominantly by sexual reproduction in Okinawan populations. The UPGMA grouping of five populations in the Okinawa, based on Neis unbiased genetic distance, showed two clusters that were south and north Okinawa populations. AMOVA analyses that incorporated the data of populations from the Kerama and the Ishigaki Islands detected significant FSC values among the populations within groups in analyses distinguishing north–south Okinawa, Okinawa–Kerama, and Okinawa–Kerama–Ishigaki. Significant FCT values were neither detected between north–south Okinawa nor between the Okinawa–Kerama groups. The local-recruits hypothesis, which assumes that a substantial proportion of recruits is produced locally, appears to be applicable to coral populations in the Ryukyu Archipelago. On the other hand, detection of nonsignificant FCT values indicated the presence of genetic connectivity between north–south Okinawa and Kerama–Okinawa groups.  相似文献

All the fish specimens ofNeoclinus bryope species complex collected from Okinawa Island including the 2 specimens already reported asN. bryope are referable toN. okazakii. Neoclinus nudus, hitherto known only from Taiwan, is newly recorded from Okinawa Island. These two species are redescribed on the basis of the specimens from Okinawa Island. The specimens from Okinawa are compared with those from Shirahama in the case ofN. okazakii and with specimens from Taiwan as well asN. lacunicola andN. toshimaensis specimens from Shirahama in the case ofN. nudus. The habitats ofN. okazakii andN. nudus are clearly separated in the waters of Heshikiya, Okinawa Island and the habitat of either species is rather particular in that it is exceptionally unoccupied by blenniids which are flourishing in the coastal waters of the Okinawa Islands.  相似文献
