We examined the effects of herbivory by the dorcas gazelle, Gazella dorcas, on different phenological stages of the lily Pancratium sickenbergeri from 1990–1996 in the Negev desert, Israel. We placed particular emphasis on the role of gazelle herbivory on selecting for plant defences and the effectiveness of these defences against subsequent herbivory. In the summer months, the gazelles dig in the sand to remove all or part of the bulb of the lily. Plants with partially-consumed bulbs were less likely to produce leaves the following winter and probably have lower lifetime flower production. Herbivory has resulted in greater downward growth of the bulb in populations with herbivory than those without herbivory, which reduces the probability that the entire plant will be consumed. Gazelles eat the leaves in the winter; this herbivory has a negative impact on leaf growth rates. However, the production of calcium oxalate limits gazelle consumption to the tips, and consequently reduces the effects of leaf herbivory. In the fall, the gazelles consumed virtually all flowers, yet we found no defence or growth strategy that might ameliorate this impact, with the possible exception of forgoing the output of a second flower stalk after the first has been consumed. The results of this study suggest that lilies employ different strategies to resist gazelle herbivory, and that these strategies are dependent on the phenological stage that is eaten. Avoidance by defence is the strategy in the leaves, avoidance by escape is utilized in bulbs. Forgoing the output of a second flower stalk after the first has been consumed can be considered as a form of escape based on a bet-hedging strategy or a shift in energy allocation.  相似文献

We tested the capacity of the soil-dwelling predatory mite, Hypoapsis aculeifer , to control mites attacking lily bulbs. Experiments in the greenhouse and in the field showed that in the absence of predatory mites populations of the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus robini , on lily bulbs increased, whereas the release of predatory mites either slowed down the increase - as observed in the field - or caused the bulb mites populations to decrease - as observed in the greenhouse. In all cases the population of predatory mites increased as long as bulb mite densities were not too low. However, within the first week after predator release there was usually a sharp decline to 10-40% of the original number released. Greenhouse experiments on intact lily bulbs in pots, boxes and 1 m 2 plots with peat soil showed that when released in a ratio of 1 predator to 2 or 5 prey, the predatory mite, Hypoaspis aculeifer , suppressed populations of bulb mites to less than 10 individual per bulb within 6 weeks. Elimination of bulb mites was observed only when the predator-to-prey ratio at release was equal to 3:1. Field experiments in 2 m 2 plots with intact bulbs in rather compact sandy soil showed that when released in ratio of 1 predator to 1 or 2 prey, the predatory mite, H. aculeifer , did not cause the population of bulb mites to decrease, but it did reduce their population growth. The initial predator-to-prey ratios required to achieve suppression (ca 1:2) or elimination (3:1) in the soil environment are much higher than those required for bulb mite elimination when lily bulb scales were embedded in a medium of vermiculite (ca 1:20). Among the possible causes are: (1) the initial losses of predators in the greenhouse and even more so in the field due to mortality and/or emigration from the experimental plots; (2) the lower temperatures in the greenhouse and especially in the field, which slow down the growth and predation processes and thereby delay prey extinction; and (3) the spatial complexity of the soil environment which creates refuges for the bulb mites.  相似文献

We examined the effects of leaf herbivory by the dorcas gazelle, Gazella dorcas, on the compensatory growth of the geophyte Pancratium sickenbergeri (Amaryllidaceae) in the Negev desert, Israel. In three populations exposed to different levels of herbivory, we removed different amounts of photosynthetic leaf area from plants in five clipping treatments: 0, 25, 50%-dispersed over all leaves, 50%-entire area of half the leaves, 100%. The population with the lowest level of herbivory showed the lowest relative regrowth rate after clipping. In the population with a constantly high level of herbivory, plants in intermediate-clipping treatments overcompensated in leaf area after clipping. For all the populations, clipped plants produce more new leaves than unclipped plants. In the population with the highest level of herbivory, clipping treatments did not have a significant effect on the number of fruits per plant. In addition, we did not find a trade-off between investments in growth and reproduction in this population. Our results indicated that, in the desert lily, herbivores may select for plant mechanisms that compensate after damage as a tolerant strategy to maintain fitness.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of herbivory by the dorcas gazelle, Gazella dorcas, on the production of a second inflorescence in a desert lily, Pancratium sickenbergeri (Amaryllidaceae), after the first inflorescence was eaten. In three populations exposed to different levels of herbivory, we conducted an inflorescence-clipping experiment in the flowering seasons of 1997, 1998 and 1999. The experiment was performed on inflorescences at both the emerging stage and the anthesis stage. Plants in each control group were undamaged. Clipped plants had a greater probability of producing a second inflorescence stalk than unclipped plants. In all the populations, the probability of producing a second inflorescence was greater when the first inflorescence was cut in the emerging stage than when it was cut in anthesis, indicating that there was a cost of compensation. In the population with the highest level of herbivory, the production of a second inflorescence stalk was related to resource availability in all 3 years. Plants produced as many flowers or fruits on the second stalk as on the first, indicating that potential reproductive output is double that usually achieved. Although we found no evidence for a trade-off between investment in first and second inflorescence stalks, the lower probability of producing a second inflorescence if heavy investment had been made in the first inflorescence indicates that compensation is costly. These results contradict the mutualism hypothesis that herbivory is beneficial to plants and provide support for the trade-off hypothesis that benefits of herbivory are proximal and are attained at an evolutionary cost.  相似文献

Aquatic macrophytes with floating leaves are often key ecological species that affect entire aquatic ecosystems. Here we describe an investigation of the importance of insect herbivory for population growth and leaf senescence in the yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea). In order to gain a general picture of the importance of herbivory under different conditions, we experimentally manipulated herbivory in a large lily population in natural still water and observed the natural development of 32 smaller populations in flowing water. Herbivory drastically increased leaf senescence, reducing leaf density. In the still water, over one summer, leaf density increased by a factor of 1.23 in the presence of water lily leaf beetles and 1.61 when herbivory was eliminated. In flowing water, population growth was restricted mainly by leaf crowdedness, which limited large dense populations. Herbivory by water lily leaf beetles also had a limiting effect on yellow water lily, again mainly in large dense populations. Small populations supported a lower density of beetles. Previous studies have not addressed population-level responses of vascular plants with floating leaves. Our results suggest that herbivory can result in greater light penetration into the water and reduce “enemy-free space” for aquatic species that find such space in water lily stands. We suggest that the water lily leaf beetle should be considered an “ecological engineer.”  相似文献

We consider three case studies of long-term plant population dynamics in Makhtesh Ramon erosion cirque in the central Negev desert of Israel. We show that rainfall is the major driving variable in this system, and that it creates large temporal and spatial variation in plant species diversity and vegetation community composition. This variability makes it extremely difficult to distinguish `signal' (= pattern in vegetation) from `noise' (random spatial and temporal variance). Our long-term vegetation studies in permanent plots arranged along the length of the cirque, initiated in 1990 and continuing, show that there is high spatial and temporal variance in plant species' incidences and abundances. This is particularly true of annual plant species. However, using pairs of fenced and unfenced plots arranged along the major abiotic gradient, altitude (which mirrors changes in rainfall), we were able to tease apart the effects of variance in rainfall and herbivory. We found significant negative effects of herbivory by the re-introduced Asiatic wild ass (Equus hemionus) on plant cover and on vegetation community composition. In a study of the effects of herbivory by dorcas gazelles (Gazella dorcas) on the lily Pancratium sickenbergeri, we found that there was little inter-annual fluctuation in lily population size in two sand dunes in Makhtesh Ramon in spite of the high percentage of lilies that is removed by the gazelles and the almost complete herbivory of flowers by these herbivores. This result indicates that the dune lily populations may be maintained by dispersal of seed from other lily populations elsewhere in Makhtesh Ramon where gazelles are rare or absent.  相似文献

The age structures of both native and transplanted populations of the perennial herb, trout lily (Erythronium americanum), were analysed and found to have age-independent mortality rates. Cohort survival was greatest in populations growing on hardwood forested flood plains (60%), less in populations from gently sloping terraces with pit-and-mound microrelief (53%) and smallest (45%) for colonies on slopes steeper than 15°. The former habitat-type is the optimum for trout lily in Nova Scotia and in it the proportion of flowering bulbs can reach 35%. The second named habitat is widespread and characterised by fewer flowering bulbs (5–10%). In the latter habitat flowering bulbs are uniformly rare. Trout lily bulbs tend to be sterile until at least their eighth year. The high mortality rates of populations on steeply sloping, hardwood forested ground ensure minimal survival of bulbs beyond their sixth year. In the other two named habitats sufficient numbers of bulbs reach ages of 8 or 9 years for some to make the translation from the sterile to the flowering form. In all the habitats studied in Nova Scotia, propagation is typically by either runners or, less importantly, daughter bulbs, with the peak of activity in the bulbs third and fourth years. The plants of flood plains showed the greatest rates of vegetative propagation, by cohort, but many of the bulbs from colonies growing on steep slopes lacked runners or daughter bulbs. As all bulbs for the transplant experiments came from a single clone it can be concluded that trout lily plants in Nova Scotia have a sufficiently large genetic endowment for them to behave in the same manner as native populations of the species in the several habitats represented in the province. The figures were drafted in the cartography section of the University of Canterbury. The National Research Council of Canada supported the research with a series of grants.  相似文献

Though the resistance to uprooting of cylindrical roots and root systems has been extensively investigated, almost no research has been performed on the factors that influence the uprooting resistance of bulbs. However, engineers have modelled bulb-like foundations and have investigated their resistance to upward movements. This study combined engineering theory with practical biology, using model bulbs of different shapes and sizes, embedding them at different depths in different soil media, and pulling them out while recording the uprooting force. Uprooting resistances of the models was compared to those of real onion and garlic bulbs with and without their root systems. Cone shaped models resisted uprooting best at all embedment depths and in both soil types, always followed by bulb shaped and cylindrical models. These results are explicable in terms of engineering theory. Cones resisted uprooting best because their maximum diameter is embedded deepest. A bulb shape is an ideal compromise as it has no sharp edges, and also allows easy downward movement. In sand uprooting resistance increased faster with depth than with bulb diameter, whereas in agricultural soils, the uprooting force was proportional both to the depth and the diameter of the model. The tests on the plants showed that real bulbs anchor plants by similar mechanisms and amounts to the models. The bulbs accounted for between 15% and 50% of the uprooting resistance of the plant, so they can make an important contribution to anchorage, particularly towards the end of the season.  相似文献

Lilium longiflorum (Easter lily) vegetative propagation occurs through production of underground bulbs containing apical and axillary meristems. In addition, sexual reproduction is achieved by flowering of elongated shoots above the bulb. It is generally accepted that L. longiflorum has an obligatory requirement for vernalisation and that long day (LD) regime hastens flowering. However, the effect of bulb size and origin, with respect to axillary or apical meristems on flowering, as well as the interactions between these meristems are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of bulb size, vernalisation and photoperiod on L. longiflorum flowering. To this end, we applied vernalisation and photoperiod treatments to the different bulb sizes and used a system of constant ambient temperature of 25 °C, above vernalisation spectrum, to avoid cold‐dependent floral induction during plant growth. Vernalisation and LD hasten flowering in all bulbs. Large, non‐vernalised bulbs invariably remained at a vegetative stage. However, small non‐vernalised bulbs flowered under LD conditions. These results demonstrate for the first time that cold exposure is not an obligatory prerequisite for L. longiflorum flowering, and that an alternative flowering pathway can bypass vernalisation in small bulbs. We suggest that apical dominance interactions determine the distinct flowering pathways of the apical and axillary meristems. Similar floral induction is achieved in propagated bulblets from scaling. These innovative findings in the field of geophyte floral induction represent valuable applicative knowledge for lily production.  相似文献

A water-soluble polysaccharide from lily bulbs was isolated and purified by Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation. Proteins present in lily bulb extract were removed by extracellular proteases secreted by S. cerevisiae during fermentation. This novel method differs from traditional protein removal methods. A suitable yeast strain was selected. Culture conditions were optimized. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to evaluate the effects of variables on the lily polysaccharide (LP) yield and the protein removal ratio (PRR). The results of applying RSM revealed that the optimum fermentation conditions were 87.5 g L−1 lily bulb powder, pH 5.6, and temperature 27.9 °C. When lily bulb extract was cultured with S. cerevisae under optimum conditions, the LP yield and the PRR were 6.56% and 91.46%, respectively. These values are in close agreement with the value predicted by the model. The resulting LP curding was further purified by DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow chromatography after isolation by alcohol precipitation post-fermentation. DEAE chromatography resulted in a fraction, LP-1 (yield: 4.46%) with a molecular weight of 65.0 kDa. LP-1 consisted of glucose and mannose in a molar ratio of 1:1.2.  相似文献

The electrophoretic patterns of esterase (E-1), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) isozymes were studied in two Spanish populations of the lily Scilla autumnalis with B-chromosome carrying individuals. The E-1 isozyme activity appears only in those individuals with B-chromosomes. None of the bulbs free of B's show it. Five bulbs, mosaic for B-content, were identified. Electrophoretic analysis shows that these bulbs are characterised by mosaicism for E-1 isozyme activity. An analysis of individual roots by both electrophoretic and cytological methods shows that tissue mosaicism for B-content correlates with tissue mosaicism for E-1 isozyme activity. The electrophoretic analysis of different roots from bulbs heterozygous for the Est-1 locus indicates that the structural gene for E-1 is not located on the B-chromosome itself. Rather there is a derepressor effect of Bs on E-1 isozyme activity. Since ADH and GOT patterns are unaffected by the presence of B-chromosomes it is clear that they do not exhibit a generalised derepressor effect.  相似文献

The dry bulb mite, Aceria tulipae, is the most important pest of stored tulip bulbs in The Netherlands. This tiny, eriophyoid mite hides in the narrow space between scales in the interior of the bulb. To achieve biological control of this hidden pest, candidate predators small enough to move in between the bulb scales are required. Earlier experiments have shown this potential for the phytoseiid mite, Neoseiulus cucumeris, but only after the bulbs were exposed to ethylene, a plant hormone that causes a slight increase in the distance between tulip bulb scales, just sufficient to allow this predator to reach the interior part of the bulb. Applying ethylene, however, is not an option in practice because it causes malformation of tulip flowers. In fact, to prevent this cosmetic damage, bulb growers ventilate rooms where tulip bulbs are stored, thereby removing ethylene produced by the bulbs (e.g. in response to mite or fungus infestation). Recently, studies on the role of predatory mites in controlling another eriophyoid mite on coconuts led to the discovery of an exceptionally small phytoseiid mite, Neoseiulus paspalivorus. This predator is able to move under the perianth of coconuts where coconut mites feed on meristematic tissue of the fruit. This discovery prompted us to test N. paspalivorus for its ability to control A. tulipae on tulip bulbs under storage conditions (ventilated rooms with bulbs in open boxes; 23 °C; storage period June–October). Using destructive sampling we monitored predator and prey populations in two series of replicated experiments, one at a high initial level of dry bulb mite infestation, late in the storage period, and another at a low initial dry bulb mite infestation, halfway the storage period. The first and the second series involved treatment with N. paspalivorus and a control experiment, but the second series had an additional treatment in which the predator N. cucumeris was released. Taking the two series of experiments together we found that N. paspalivorus controlled the populations of dry bulb mites both on the outer scale of the bulbs as well as in the interior part of the bulbs, whereas N. cucumeris significantly reduced the population of dry bulb mites on the outer scale, but not in the interior part of the bulb. Moreover, N. paspalivorus was found predominantly inside the bulb, whereas N. cucumeris was only found on the outer scale, thereby confirming our hypothesis that the small size of N. paspalivorus facilitates access to the interior of the bulbs. We argue that N. paspalivorus is a promising candidate for the biological control of dry bulb mites on tulip bulbs under storage conditions in the Netherlands.  相似文献

The control of bolting time in onion is an important approach for bulb and seed production, as onion plants which bolt do not produce marketable bulbs and seed yields are dependent on floral induction. However, genetic and molecular studies about bolting time in onion plants have not been examined yet to date. In order to understand the regulation of bolting time in onion plants, we conducted the genetic crosses between late bolting-type cultivar (MOS8) and very early bolting-type cultivar (Guikum). Segregation ratio of late to very early in F2 populations indicated that this lateness trait was determined by a dominant locus. We also analyzed protein profiles in onion plants with different bolting time by a proteomics approach. Interestingly, a protein spot with significant similarities to chromodomains of mammalian chromo-ATPase/helicase-DNA-binding 1 or heterochromatin protein 1, which is involved in the histone modifications, was identified. Histone methyltransferase activity was also observed in onion plants. Taken together, these results suggest that a genetic pathway may be involved in the modulation of bolting time in onion plants, though there is no direct evidence that this protein spot obtained by proteomics is relevant to vernalization.  相似文献

In this study we examine the hypothesis that divergent natural selection produces genetic differentiation among populations in plant defensive strategies (tolerance and resistance) generating adaptive variation in defensive traits against herbivory. Controlled genetic material (paternal half-sib families) from two populations of the annual Datura stramonium genetically differentiated in tolerance and resistance to herbivory were used. This set of paternal half-sib families was planted at both sites of origin and the pattern of genotypic selection acting on tolerance and resistance was determined, as well as the presence and variation in the magnitude of allocational costs of tolerance. Selection analyses support the adaptive differentiation hypothesis. Tolerance was favored at the site with higher average level of tolerance, and resistance was favored at the site with higher average level of resistance. The presence of significant environmentally dependent costs of tolerance was in agreement with site variation in the adaptive value of tolerance. Our results support the expectation that environmentally dependent costs of plant defensive strategies can generate differences among populations in the evolutionary trajectory of defensive traits and promote the existence of a selection mosaic. The pattern of contrasting selection on tolerance suggests that, in some populations of D. stramonium, tolerance may alter the strength of reciprocal coevolution between plant resistance and natural enemies.  相似文献

The mountain gazelle (Gazella gazelle), Dorcas gazelle (Gazella Dorcas) and acacia gazelle (Gazella arabica acacia) were historically abundant in the southern Levant, and more specifically in Israel. Anthropogenic and natural changes have caused a rapid decline in gazelle populations, raising concerns about their conservation status and future survival. The genetic profile of 111 wild gazelles from Israel was determined based on three regions of mitochondrial DNA (control region, Cytochrome b and 12S ribosomal RNA) and nine nuclear microsatellite markers. Genetic analysis of the mountain gazelle population, the largest known population of this rare species, revealed adequate diversity levels and gene flow between subpopulations. Nevertheless, ongoing habitat degradation and other human effects, such as poaching, suggest the need for drastic measures to prevent species extinction. Dorcas gazelles in Israel displayed inbreeding within subpopulations while still maintaining considerable genetic diversity overall. This stable population, represented by a distinctive genetic profile, is fragmented and isolated from its relatives in neighboring localities. Based on the genetic profile of a newly sampled subpopulation in Israel, we provide an alternative hypothesis for the historic dispersal of Dorcas gazelle, from the Southern Levant to northern Africa. The small acacia gazelle population was closest to gazelles from the Farasan Islands of Saudi Arabia, based on mitochondrial markers. The two populations did not share haplotypes, suggesting that these two populations may be the last remnant wild gazelles of this species worldwide. Only a dozen acacia gazelles survive in Israel, and urgent steps are needed to ensure the survival of this genetically distinctive lineage. The genetic assessments of our study recognize new conservation priorities for each gazelle species in the Southern Levant.  相似文献

The extent to which a species responds to environmental changes is mediated not only by extrinsic processes such as time and space, but also by species-specific ecology. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau uplifted approximately 3000 m and experienced at least four major glaciations during the Pleistocene epoch in the Quaternary Period. Consequently, the area experienced concurrent changes in geomorphological structure and climate. Two species, the Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii, chiru) and Tibetan gazelle (Procapra picticaudata), both are endemic on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, where their habitats overlap, but have different migratory behaviors: the chiru is inclined to have female-biased dispersal with a breeding migration during the calving season; in contrast, Tibetan gazelles are year-round residents and never migrate distantly. By using coalescence methods we compared mitochondrial control region DNA sequences and variation at nine microsatellite loci in these two species. Coalescent simulations indicate that the chiru and Tibetan gazelle do not share concordant patterns in their genealogies. The non-migratory Tibetan gazelle, that is more vulnerable to the impact of drastic geographic changes such as the elevation of the plateau, glaciations and so on, appears to have a strong population genetic structure with complicated demographic history. Specifically, the Tibetan gazelle population appears to have experienced isolation and divergence with population fluctuations since the Middle Pleistocene (0.781 Ma). However, it showed continued decline since the Upper Pleistocene (0.126 Ma), which may be attributed to the irreversible impact of increased human activities on the plateau. In contrast, the migratory chiru appears to have simply experienced population expansion. With substantial gene flow among regional populations, this species shows no historical population isolation and divergence. Thus, this study adds to many empirical studies that show historical and contemporary extrinsic and intrinsic processes shape the recent evolutionary history and population genetic structure of species.  相似文献
