Strenuous diaphragmatic contractions that are induced by inspiratory resistive breathing initiate an inflammatory response that involves the elevation of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines within the diaphragm, which may then spill into the circulation. The production of reactive oxygen species within working respiratory muscles increases in response to these strenuous diaphragmatic contractions. At the same time, diaphragmatic nitric oxide (NO) production declines significantly, despite a time-dependent increase in NO synthase isoform protein expression. The increase in adhesion molecule expression and infiltration of granulocytes and macrophages that follows may contribute to the contraction-induced diaphragm injury. Enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species, oxidative stress augmentation, reduced NO production, and glycogen depletion are potential stimuli for the cytokine induction that is secondary to strenuous diaphragmatic contractions. This production of cytokines within the diaphragm may contribute to the diaphragmatic muscle fiber injury that occurs with strenuous contractions or to the expected repair process. TNF-alpha is a cytokine that compromises diaphragmatic contractility and may contribute to muscle wasting. IL-6 is a cytokine that may have beneficial systemic effects by mobilizing glucose from the liver and free fatty acids from the adipose tissue and providing them to the strenuously working respiratory muscles. Thus cytokine upregulation within the working diaphragm may be adaptive and maladaptive.  相似文献

Synopsis Gill filaments of one highly active and two less active shark species exhibit a conservative morphological scheme including such features as branchial canopies, marginal lamellar projections, and enlarged, discrete outer marginal lamellar channels and lateral lamellar sinuses. The specific spatial orientation of the secondary lamellae respective to one another, the gill filaments, and the interbranchial septa create what appears as one-way interfilament water channels, suggesting the presence of an efficient branchial countercurrent system. It is proposed that the fortified structure of shark gills allows many shark species to ventilate passively without having evolved gill filament modifications as apparently did some highly active teleosts. This in turn may have expedited the evolution of lamnid shark species through pre-adaptation to a swift oceanic lifestyle.  相似文献

Two new tetraphyllidean species, Duplicibothrium cairae n. sp. and D. paulum n. sp., are described from Pacific cownose rays Rhinoptera steindachneri collected from the Gulf of California. D. cairae n. sp. differs from the only other known species in this genus, D. minutum, in its possession of two posteriorly bifurcating longitudinal septa on each bothridium and having a greater number of loculi per bothridium, wider bothridia and a greater number of segments per worm. D. paulum n. sp. differs from the above two species in being shorter, having two continuous longitudinal septa on each bothridium, rather than posteriorly bifurcating or absent longitudinal septa, having a greater number of loculi per bothridium and having fewer segments per worm. The generic diagnosis of Duplicibothrium is amended to reflect the inclusion of the two new species. Species of Duplicibothriumappear to be restricted to host species of the genus Rhinoptera. Systematic information gained from the study of these two new species supports the monophyly of the tetraphyllidean family Serendipidae and suggests that Duplicibothrium shares a phylogenetic heritage with species in the genera Glyphobothrium and Serendip, taxa that are also parasitic in cownose rays. Evidence for a phylogenetic relationship between serendipid species and species of Dioecotaenia is discussed, as are potential molluscan hosts for cestode species in Duplicibothrium and Dioecotaenia.  相似文献

Diaphragmatic thickness-lung volume relationship in vivo   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
To characterize the relationship of changes in diaphragmatic thickness during contraction to changes in lung volume, we developed a technique to measure diaphragm thickness based on M-mode ultrasonography. First, diaphragmatic thickness was measured in situ at necropsy with ultrasound and verified by measuring the same resected segment of diaphragm by ruler (correlation coefficient = 0.93, slope = 0.97). The technique of imaging the diaphragm in living subjects was developed by using a 15-MHz transducer coupled to an M-mode echocardiograph. Ten normal male volunteers were studied while sitting. The ultrasound transducer was held between the ribs in the ninth lateral interspace, and tidal volume was measured by spirometry. The thickening fraction (TF) was calculated as TF = (thickness at peak inspiration - thickness at end expiration)/thickness at end expiration for each of a series of different sized breaths. The function, TF vs. lung volume, for a range of volumes was linear for each subject and had intrasubject reproducibility with intersubject variability. We conclude that diaphragmatic TF is related to function as determined by lung volume, and this may prove to be a useful technique for in vivo studies of diaphragmatic function.  相似文献

A 12-month investigation of the population dynamics, growth, ageing, reproduction and sexuality of Anodonta woodiana (Lea, 1834) in Plover Cove Reservoir, Hong Kong, has been undertaken. Recruitment occurs in the summer, May through July being the period of peak incidence of glochidia on captive fish hosts. Juveniles grow rapidly to a shell length of 30 mm and are sexually mature by the following spring. A study of the population structure of A. woodiana indicated that most animals were less than 8 years old. Results of a Walford plot for this species indicated a maximum theoretical shell length (in Plover Cove) of 162·5 mm and a life span of approximately 12 years; the latter is in good agreement with age estimates for European unionids.
Anodonta woodiana is dioecious with females predominating in a ratio of 60:40. A very small number of individuals (0·3%) are hermaphrodite. Males possess mature gonads throughout the year whereas females come into reproductive condition during the spring. There was no evidence of shell form sexual dimorphism, as has been recorded for other unionaceans.
The reproductive strategy and time of gonad maturation of A. woodiana is compared with that of unionids from elsewhere and with other fresh water bivalves from southern China.  相似文献

In young Crania anomala with a trocholophe or an early schizolophe one inhalant current enters the anterior gape, filters past the single bell-shaped cirrous basket and spills out diffusely as exhalant current both anteriorly and laterally. Late schizolophe or early spirolophe forms two separate cirrous baskets which produce two separate inhalant currents: the exhalant current still diffuses out anteriorly and laterally. In later stages either one single exhalant current comes out at the anteromedial region, or three exhalant currents, including an additional one at each posterolateral region.
The roof of the visceral cavity is attached in five places to the dorsal valve of Crania to form a mantle recess, an anterior passage and two lateral passages. A hole bored through the dorsal valve into the mantle recess or the anterior passage lets out exhalant current. The palaeobiological significance of this lies in the possible use of the hole in the perforate shell valve of the siphonotretid fossil inarticulate Schizambon australis as an exhalant opening. In this species the hole leads into the mantle recess, which also communicates via a lateral passage with each posterolateral part of the mantle space.  相似文献

The ectomycorrhiza (ECM) Piceirhiza internicrassihyphis on Picea abies is described in detail. It is yellowish brown to brown with a mantle of a transitional type between plectenchymatous and pseudoparenchymatous. The inner mantle layers show some thick-walled hyphae, often with a few of them growing in parallel. These thick-walled hyphae contain particles which turn brownish in Melzer’s reagent, and their septa and walls are partially amyloid. Rhizomorphs occur infrequently and are undifferentiated, and are composed of rather loosely woven hyphae of uniform diameter. This combination of characteristics has not yet been identified in any other ECM. The lack of cystidia and the presence of amyloidy suggest that this ECM is formed by a species of the family Thelephoraceae. Piceirhiza internicrassihyphis can be found associated with ECM of Cortinarius obtusus, and the hyphae of the latter species often grow on the surface of P. internicrassihyphis and can even cover the whole tip. Although there is a close association and possibly a penetration between these two fungi, it can be excluded that the thick-walled hyphae of the inner mantle layers originate from C. obtusus. Some emanating hyphae of C. obtusus ECM seem to interact with those of P. internicrassihyphis, as indicated by short, hyphal outgrowths which were found attached to the foreign hyphae.  相似文献

Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a life-saving intervention in patients in respiratory failure. Unfortunately, prolonged MV results in the rapid development of diaphragm atrophy and weakness. MV-induced diaphragmatic weakness is significant because inspiratory muscle dysfunction is a risk factor for problematic weaning from MV. Therefore, developing a clinical intervention to prevent MV-induced diaphragm atrophy is important. In this regard, MV-induced diaphragmatic atrophy occurs due to both increased proteolysis and decreased protein synthesis. While efforts to impede MV-induced increased proteolysis in the diaphragm are well-documented, only one study has investigated methods of preserving diaphragmatic protein synthesis during prolonged MV. Therefore, we evaluated the efficacy of two therapeutic interventions that, conceptually, have the potential to sustain protein synthesis in the rat diaphragm during prolonged MV. Specifically, these experiments were designed to: 1) determine if partial-support MV will protect against the decrease in diaphragmatic protein synthesis that occurs during prolonged full-support MV; and 2) establish if treatment with a mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant will maintain diaphragm protein synthesis during full-support MV. Compared to spontaneously breathing animals, full support MV resulted in a significant decline in diaphragmatic protein synthesis during 12 hours of MV. In contrast, diaphragm protein synthesis rates were maintained during partial support MV at levels comparable to spontaneous breathing animals. Further, treatment of animals with a mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant prevented oxidative stress during full support MV and maintained diaphragm protein synthesis at the level of spontaneous breathing animals. We conclude that treatment with mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants or the use of partial-support MV are potential strategies to preserve diaphragm protein synthesis during prolonged MV.  相似文献

The microsporogenous tissue of at least some species of all 17 genera of Onagraceae is divided by transverse septa composed only of tapetum or of both tapetum and parenchyma. The presence of these septa apparently constitutes a distinctive characteristic of the family. In Calylophus sect. Salpingia, Gaura, Clarkia, Heterogaura, and two unrelated species of Ludwigia, the septa are transverse and mostly parenchymatous. In Hauya and Calylophus sect. Calylophus, similar transverse septa together with vertical ones divide the sporogenous tissue into many small spheroidal or ellipsoidal packets. The condition in which occasional tapetal septa divide the sporogenous tissue is clearly the ancestral one in Onagraceae. Polysporangiate anthers divided by parenchymatous septa have evolved independently at least twice each in the branches leading to Ludwigia and to all other members of the family, for a total of no less than four times. Based on this feature and the unique pattern of histogenesis of their integuments, Hauya (despite its retention of many plesiomorphic features), Calylophus, and Gaura may well be directly related to one another.  相似文献

Nerve transfers have been well described for the treatment of congenital and traumatic injuries in the brachial plexus and extremities. This series is the first to describe nerve transfers to reanimate the diaphragm in patients confined to long-term positive pressure ventilation because of high cervical spine injury. Patients who have sustained injury to the spinal cord at the C3 to C5 level suffer axonal loss in the phrenic nerve. They can neither propagate a nerve stimulus nor respond to implanted diaphragmatic pacing devices (electrophrenic respiration). Ten nerve transfers were performed in six patients who met these conditions. The procedures used end-to-end anastomoses from the fourth intercostal to the phrenic nerve approximately 5 cm above the diaphragm. A phrenic nerve pacemaker was implanted as part of the procedure and was placed distal to the anastomosis. Each week, the pacemaker was activated to test for diaphragmatic response. Once diaphragm movement was documented, diaphragmatic pacing was instituted. Eight of the 10 transfers have had more than 3 months to allow for axonal regeneration. Of these, all eight achieved successful diaphragmatic pacing (100 percent). The average interval from surgery to diaphragm response to electrical stimulation was 9 months. All patients were able to tolerate diaphragmatic pacing as an alternative to positive pressure ventilation, as judged by end tidal CO2 values, tidal volumes, and patient comfort. Intercostal to phrenic nerve transfer with diaphragmatic pacing is a viable means of liberating patients with high cervical spine injury from long-term mechanical ventilation.  相似文献

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a significant clinical problem in which a portion of the diaphragmatic musculature fails to form, resulting in a hole in the diaphragm. Here we use animal models of CDH to test two hypotheses regarding the pathogenesis. First, the origin of the defect results from the malformation of the amuscular mesenchymal component of the primordial diaphragm rather than with the process of myogenesis. Second, the defect in the primordial diaphragmatic tissue is not secondary to defects in the developing lung. In c-met(-/-) mouse embryos, in which diaphragm muscle fibers do not form because of a defect in muscle precursor migration, the amuscular substratum forms fully. We show that a defect characteristic of CDH can be induced in the amuscular membrane. In Fgf10(-/-) mouse embryos that have lung agenesis we show that the primordial diaphragm does not depend on signals from lung tissue for proper development and that diaphragmatic malformation is a primary defect in CDH. These data suggest that the pathogenesis of CDH involves mechanisms fundamentally different from previously proposed hypotheses.  相似文献

A detailed study of the gonads of two endangered species of thegenus Margaritifera living in the Iberian Peninsula, Margaritiferaauricularia (Spengler, 1793) and Margaritifera margaritifera(Linnaeus 1758), based on macroscopic and histological observationsis presented. In both species, gonadal tissue occurs withinthe visceral mass without a specific location. In hermaphrodite specimens, male and female acini are mixed in the visceral mass but canbe clearly distinguished by detailed macroscopic study. The gonadaltopography and cycle of Margaritifera auricularia is described forthe first time, indicating that the species is a female hermaphroditeand that gametogenesis occurs from December to March. Fiftypercent of Margaritifera margaritifera specimens studied werehermaphrodites and 50% females. (Received 6 March 2000; accepted 5 June 2000)  相似文献

The development of the parasitic glochidium larva of Anodonta cygnea L. is outlined, with reference to earlier studies on unionid larvae, and a comparison is made between the mature glochidia of the three genera, Anodonta, Unio , and Margaritifera.
The glochidium of Anodonta cygnea is anatomically and morphologically specialized in connection with its parasitic existence. The specialized structures are described, and their significance discussed.  相似文献

PARASITISM AND THE UNIONACEA (BIVALVIA)   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
It is proposed that the incorporation of a unique parasitic stage in the life-cycle of unionaceans which involves an obligate relationship between a vertebrate host, usually a fish, and a highly modified larval stage, the glochidium, has had far-reaching consequences with respect to overall morphology, extent of species' geographic ranges, and rate of speciation in the group. Glochidia are separable into three main types with respect to overall shape and attachment features, and are retained in variously modified brood pouches. When mature, glochidia are released in several different ways which reflect various adaptations involved in either attracting the fish host and/or increasing the probability of attachment. Glochidia do not seem capable of host selection, and the reaction of the host to the parasite seems to be the main factor in determining specificity. Release of glochidia is synchronized to correspond to periods of predictable host availability, such as during spawing migrations and nesting behaviour. Other adaptations include modifications of glochidial conglutinates to mimic host food items, and modifications of the unionacean mantle edges to attract hosts. In all cases, a good correlation exists between the type of lure used and host food preferences, but, despite these adaptations, host specificity among unionaceans seems low. Parasitism among unionaceans is postulated to be mainly advantageous in terms of predictability of dispersal by habitat-specific hosts, but parasitism is hypothesized to entail constraints in terms of the degree to which shell shape and life-habit can be diversified among unionaceans. The type of host parasitized is considered to affect the rate of diversification among populations and speciation among unionaceans: those that parasitize strictly freshwater hosts are more likely to exhibit highly individualistic populations in different drainages with respect to molecular genetic and soft-part characters, while those that parasitize anadromous or saltwater-tolerant hosts show little differentiation among widely distributed populations.  相似文献

The plumage of the Estrildidae was examined in order to determine the incidence and origin of the spotted patterns.
In the Australian grassfinches a series of feathers showing the derivation of spotted patterns from transverse barring was found in two species. In most species such patterns consisted of single broad spots, but in two species paired spots were present.
The mannikins show three types of spotted pattern. One is derived from transverse barring, another from a rachial streak, and the third from a combination of both bars and streaks. The last one is not a true spotted pattern, the effect being due to overlapping feathers.
The waxbills show spotted patterns derived from transverse barring, the development of which exactly parallels that shown by the grassfinches, but differs in that almost all patterns show paired spots.
The spotted patterns appear to have been derived from a basic barred pattern in most cases, and to represent an increasing complexity of pattern rather than a gradual loss.
It is considered that similar patterns in widely separated species are due to parallel evolution of patterns and not to phylogenetically close relationship.
Where various species show different successive stages in the evolution of a pattern, this does not indicate that one is ancestral to another. Since the species concerned have a common family relationship, the potential for such a pattern may be present throughout the family.
Since the patterns have a function in specific recognition, it is suggested that similar patterns are likely to recur in widely separated localities and that the patterns of sympatric species are likely to differ. If similar patterns are present in one area they will probably indicate close relationship.
The inference of this in relation to plumage pattern problems in some other orders is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The trophic relationships of the benthic invertebrates at two places of differing detrital content in an oligotrophic stream system were examined during a 12 month period.
The sites are described and their detrital contents and other abiotic features compared.
The faunal list at each site is fairly similar but certain species are more common at or restricted to one or other site. The reasons for this are briefly discussed.
The predators and omnivores are in two groups: the first feed only on certain prey and are thus limited by the distribution of their prey. The others consume a wide range of prey and have wider distributions.
The predator species are non-selective in their choice of prey which are devoured in an intensity which cannot however be related to their density in the benthos.
In poorer trophic conditions predators adapt by consuming a greater quantity of algae and detritus; cannibalism and interpredator-predation occur. The prey species are more intensely consumed under poor trophic conditions.
The ecology of two species of predatory Plecoptera is examined and the results indicate that competition probably occurs between them.  相似文献

Simultaneous recordings of the diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMG) were made from two separate regions of the costal diaphragm in six normal cats. The diaphragmatic activities were always synchronous and the amplitudes and rates of rise were similar during slow-wave sleep. In contrast, during natural rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, different activity was often present in the two leads. These differences were in the time of onset and offset, as well as in the amplitude and spike patterns, and occurred in approximately 5-20% of the diaphragmatic bursts averaged over the entire REM sleep period. With respect to eye movement density, the rate of differential activation was higher during periods of high density (26%) than in the absence of eye movements (1%) in the four animals for which these data were available. Differential activation of portions of the costal diaphragm is apparently a normal event of REM sleep. This could result from descending state-specific phasic neuronal activity that bypasses the medullary respiratory generator. Differential activation of portions of the diaphragm could contribute to disordered ventilation during REM sleep.  相似文献

Shells in pearl oysters are produced by the mantle which is also used as a graft in pearl operations. Here, we investigate the mantle structure of a new pearl oyster species of the Persian Gulf, Pinctada persica, and compare it to two other pearl-producing species, Pinctada radiata and Pteria penguin. The anterior, ventral and posterior segments of the mantle edge of each valve were fixed, and tissue sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin. A new pentachrome method and PAS-alcian blue staining were used to characterise the different mucosubstances. The mantle edges were found to have an outer, middle and inner fold, which have different morphology in each species. The mantle edge is lined by cuboidal and columnar epithelia, and interspersed among these epithelial cells we found mucous cells and cells that contained brown granules. The outer and middle folds of the two Pinctada species show different shapes to that of Pteria penguin. Most of the mucous cells in the mantle contain acidic mucosubstances and small amounts of mixed acidic-neutral mucosubstances were observed in the middle and inner fold of Pinctada persica. This study reveals that the mantle edges of the three species possess similar cellular structure, but vary in the shape of the folds.  相似文献

The Upper Triassic fishes from Polzberg bei Lunz, Austria   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Carnian (Upper Triassic) fishes from Polzberg bei Lunz have been known since 1886 but no comprehensive account has been published. Eleven species are described nine of which, Saurichthys calcaratus, Polzbergia brochatus, Peltopleurus dirumptus, Habroichthys gregarius, Nannolepis elegans, Phaidrosoma lunzensis, Elpistoichthys pectinatus, E. striolatus and Pholidophoretes salvus are new, and two others, Thoracopterus niederristi Bronn and Gigantopterus telleri Abel, previously little-known.
New supraspecific taxa defined are:the order Polzbergiiformes, the family Thoracopteridae and the genera Polzbergia, Nannolepis, Phaidrosoma, Elpistoichthys and Pholidophoretes.
Habroichthys, Thoracopterus, Gigantopterus and Nannolepis show an unusual skull-roof pattern and are included in the re-defined order Luganoiiformes.
Two new ichthyokentemids considerably extend the known time-range of this family.
The genus Pholidophoretes is intermediate between the Archaeomenidae Goodrich 1909, and the Pholidophoridae sensu stricto Nybelin 1966.
The Polzberg assemblage was probably mainly marine with a small freshwater contribution; it shows less similarity to the Besano and Raibl assemblages than these do to each other.
The Luganoiiformes are probably, but not certainly, monophyletic; relationships within the order are analyzed and a cladogram constructed.
The Platysiagiformes, Peltopleuriformes, Luganoiiformes and Cephaloxeniformes could all have been derived from a common ancestor at the Perleidus level and are probably offshoots of the perleidid radiation.  相似文献

The glochidium of Margaritifera auricularia is described for the first time by using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and histological techniques. The larval mantle is formed by only two layers of cells; the inner one being much thicker, with microvilli. All cell masses of the glochidium are temporary aggregations that are the rudiments of organs of the subsequent juveniles which will be released after metamorphosis in the host tissues. In the glochidium there are three main masses of cells: (i) the muscle, which is in an anterior position; (ii) the oral plate in the centre of the larva; and (iii) the more ventrally and posteriorly situated ventral plate, or foot rudiment, flanged with lateral pits all bearing dense cilia. No rudimentary organs such as the pericardium, the kidney, the heart or nerve ganglia have developed. There are no visible hooks in the valve margins, but by using light microscopy we observed minute teeth covered by a rim of the periostracum. Near the margin of the shell there are two pairs of sensory hair tufts only observable by scanning electron microscopy. The glochidium of M. auricularia is the largest of the family Margaritiferidae and intermediate between the glochidium of the known species of this family and those of Unionidae.  相似文献
