Nitrogen fixation in perennial forage legumes in the field   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Nitrogen acquisition is one of the most important factors for plant production, and N contribution from biological N2 fixation can reduce the need for industrial N fertilizers. Perennial forages are widespread in temperate and boreal areas, where much of the agriculture is based on livestock production. Due to the symbiosis with N2-fixing rhizobia, perennial forage legumes have great potential to increase sustainability in such grassland farming systems. The present work is a summary of a large number of studies investigating N2 fixation in three perennial forage legumes primarily relating to ungrazed northern temperate/boreal areas. Reported rates of N2 fixation in above-ground plant tissues were in the range of up to 373 kg N ha–1 year–1 in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), 545 kg N ha–1 year–1 in white clover (T. repens L.) and 350 kg N ha–1 year–1 in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). When grown in mixtures with grasses, these species took a large fraction of their nitrogen from N2 fixation (average around 80%), regardless of management, dry matter yield and location. There was a large variation in N2 fixation data and part of this variation was ascribed to differences in plant production between years. Studies with experiments at more than one site showed that also geographic location was an important source of variation. On the other hand, when all data were plotted against latitude, there was no simple correlation. Climatic conditions seem therefore to give as high N2 fixation per ha and year in northern areas (around 60°N) as in areas with a milder climate (around 40°N). Analyzing whole plants or just above-ground plant parts influenced the estimate of N2 fixation, and most reported values were underestimated since roots were not included. Despite large differences in environmental conditions, such as N fertilization and geographic location, N2 fixation (Nfix; kg N per ha and year) was significantly (P<0.001) correlated to legume dry matter yield (DM; kg per ha and year). Very rough, but nevertheless valuable estimations of Nfix in legume/grass mixtures (roots not considered) are given by Nfix = 0.026DM + 7 for T. pratense, Nfix = 0.031DM + 24 for T. repens, and Nfix = 0.021DM + 17 for M. sativa.  相似文献

Annual inputs of symbiotic N2-fixation associated with 3 species of alpine Trifolium were estimated in four alpine communities differing in resource supplies. We hypothesized that fixation rates would vary according to the degree of N, P, and water limitation of production, with the higher rates of fixation in N limited communities (dry meadow, moist meadow) and lower rates in P and water limited communities (wet meadow, fellfield). To estimate N2-fixation rates, natural abundance of N isotopes (15N) were measured in field collected Trifolium and reference plants and in Trifolium plants grown in N-free medium in a growth chamber. All three Trifolium species relied on a large proportion of atmospherically-fixed N2 to meet their N requirements, ranging from 70 to 100%. There were no apparent differences in the proportion of plant N derived from fixation among the communities, but differences in the contribution of the Trifolium species to community cover resulted in a wide range of annual N inputs from fixation, from 127 mg m–2 year–1 in wet meadows to 810 mg m–2 year–1 in fellfields. Annual spatially integrated input of symbiotic N2-fixation to Niwot Ridge, Colorado was estimated at 490 mg m–2 year–1 (5 kg ha–1 year–1), which is relatively high in the context of estimates of net N mineralization and N deposition.  相似文献

The impact of sustained low external concentrations of NO 3 (0, 10, 100 and 1000 mmol m–3) on plant growth and the relative acquisition of N through N2 fixation and NO 3 uptake by established, nodulated white clover (Trifolium repens L. cv. Blanca) was studied over 28 days in flowing solution culture. Nitrogen fixation was measured by N difference and 15N dilution methods. Plants supplied with NO 3 achieved higher relative growth rates (% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGabmiEayaara% aaaa!3702!\[\bar x\]=0.091 d–1) compared with control plants dependent on N2 fixation (0.073 d–1). Nitrate plants showed progressive increases in shoot: root d.w. ratios from 4 to 6.5–7.6 between days 0–28, compared with 5.1 on day 28 for control plants. Increases in both nodule d.w. and numbers per plant were inhibited after day seven at all concentrations of NO 3 . The severity of inhibition of N2 fixation increased with increasing NO 3 concentration and with time. The total amounts of N2 fixed per plant between days 0–7 after supplying 10, 100 and 1000 mmol m–3 NO 3 , respectively, were 37–39, 28–30 and 0–13%, of the total N acquired. Between days 7–28 the proportional contributions of N2 fixation to total N acquisition declined to 3, 0.5 and 0%, respectively, in these treatments. The corresponding mean specific rates of N2 fixation between days 0–7 were, respectively, 5.4, 3.2, and 2.0 mmol N d–1 g–1 nodule d.w., compared with 7.9 mmol N d–1 g–1 nodule d.w. for zero NO 3 plants. There was no evidence of a transitory increase in N2 fixation following the addition of NO 3 , even at the lowest supply concentration.  相似文献

Summary From acetylene reduction assays over a 10-month period starting in April 1979, nodule activities averaged 18.78 (se 4.67) moles C2H4 g nodule dw–1 h–1 forAlnus rubra and 59.95 (se 12.14) moles C2H4 g nodule dw–1 h–1 forCytisus scorparius. Plant rates were 1.91 (se. 47) moles C2H4 plant–1 h–1 forA. rubra and 0.55 (se. 17) moles C2H4 plant–1 h–1 forC. Scoparius. Plant activity and total leaf N were strongly correlated with the dw of other plant parts, but nodule activity and percent leaf N were not. Plant and nodule activities were not associated with temperature, moisture stress, precipitation events or percent light for either species over the growing season nor for 54A. rubra sampled in mid-season 1979 on one replication. After 5 to 6 growing seasons, 14A. rubra on the same site ranged from 30 to 332 cm in height and showed strong correlation between nodule dw, leaf dw, plant size and total leaf N. Results from this study and others indicate logistic equations may be modified to predict the effect of adding a N2 fixing plant to a population of non N2 fixing trees.  相似文献

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is able to fix 20–60 kg N ha–1 under tropical environments in Brazil, but these amounts are inadequate to meet the N requirement for economically attractive seed yields. When the plant is supplemented with N fertilizer, N2 fixation by Rhizobium can be suppressed even at low rates of N. Using the 15N enriched method, two field experiments were conducted to compare the effect of foliar and soil applications of N-urea on N2 fixation traits and seed yield. All treatments received a similar fertilization including 10 kg N ha–1 at sowing. Increasing rates of N (10, 30 and 50 kg N ha–1) were applied for both methods. Foliar application significantly enhanced nodulation, N2 fixation (acetylene reduction activity) and yield at low N level (10 kg N ha–1). Foliar nitrogen was less suppressive to nodulation, even at higher N levels, than soil N treatments. In the site where established Rhizobium was in low numbers, inoculation contributed substantially to increased N2 fixation traits and yield. Both foliar and soil methods inhibited nodulation at high N rates and did not significantly increase bean yield, when comparing low (10 kg N ha–1) and high (50 kg N ha–1) rates applied after emergence. In both experiments, up to 30 kg N ha–1 of biologically fixed N2 were obtained when low rates of N were applied onto the leaves.  相似文献

This study was conducted to examine the effects of varying N rates and cropping systems (mixedversus pure stand) on the suitability of oats (Avena sativa L.) for estimating N2 fixed in sequentially harvested vetch (Vicia sativa L.) over two growing seasons (1984–85 and 1985–86). The N rates were, 20 and 100 kg N ha–1 in 1984–85 and 15 and 60 kg N ha–1 in 1985–86. In the 1984–85 season, vetch at maturity derived 76 and 63% N from fixation at the high and low N rates respectively. The corresponding values for the second season were 66 and 42%. Except in the 1985–86 season when some significantly higher values of % N2 fixed were estimated by using the reference crop grown at the higher (A-value approach) than at the lower N rate (isotope-dilution approach), both approaches resulted in similar measurements of N2 fixed. In the 1984–85 season, similar values of N2 fixed were obtained using either the pure or mixed stand oats reference crops. Although in the 1985–86 season, the mixed reference crop occasionally estimated lower % N2 fixed than pure oats, total N2 fixed estimates were always similar (P<0.05). Thus, in general, N fertilization and cropping system of the reference crop did not significantly influence estimates of N2 fixation.  相似文献

The 15N isotope dilution and A-value methods were used to measure biological nitrogen (N2) fixation in field grown fababean (Vicia faba L.), over a 2-year period. Four N rates, 20, 100, 200 and 400 kg N ha–1 were examined. The two isotope methods gave similar values of % N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa). With 20 kg N ha–1, %Ndfa in fababean was about 85% in both years. Increasing the N rate to 100 kg N ha–1 decreased N2 fixation slightly to 75%. Further reductions in N2 fixed to 60 and 43% occurred where 200 and 400 kg N ha–1 were applied, respectively. Thus even higher rates of N than normally applied in farming practice could not completely suppress N2 fixation in fababean. We also devised one equation for both the isotope dilution and A-value approaches, thereby (i) avoiding the need for different calculations for the 15N isotope methods, and (ii) showing once again that the isotope dilution and A-value methods are mathematically and conceptually identical.  相似文献

Effects of rate of nitrogen (N) fertilizer and stocking rate on production and N2 fixation by white clover (Trifolium repens L.) grown with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were determined over 5 years in farmlets near Hamilton, New Zealand. Three farmlets carried 3.3 dairy cows ha–1 and received urea at 0, 200 or 400 kg N ha–1 yr–1 in 8–10 split applications. A fourth farmlet received 400 kg N ha–1 yr–1 and had 4.4 cows ha–1.There was large variation in annual clover production and total N2 fixation, which in the 0 N treatment ranged from 9 to 20% clover content in pasture and from 79 to 212 kg N fixed ha–1 yr–1. Despite this variation, total pasture production in the 0 N treatment remained at 75–85% of that in the 400 N treatments in all years, due in part to the moderating effect of carry-over of fixed N between years.Fertilizer N application decreased the average proportion of clover N derived from N2 fixation (PN; estimated by 15N dilution) from 77% in the 0 N treatment to 43–48% in the 400 N treatments. The corresponding average total N2 fixation decreased from 154 kg N ha–1 yr–1 to 39–53 kg N ha–1 yr–1. This includes N2 fixation in clover tissue below grazing height estimated at 70% of N2 fixation in above grazing height tissue, based on associated measurements, and confirmed by field N balance calculations. Effects of N fertilizer on clover growth and N2 fixation were greatest in spring and summer. In autumn, the 200 N treatment grew more clover than the 0 N treatment and N2 fixation was the same. This was attributed to more severe grazing during summer in the 0 N treatment, resulting in higher surface soil temperatures and a deleterious effect on clover stolons. In the 400 N treatments, a 33% increase in cow stocking rate tended to decrease PN from 48 to 43% due to more N cycling in excreta, but resulted in up to 2-fold more clover dry matter and N2 fixation because lower pasture mass reduced grass competition, particularly during spring.  相似文献

Summary The nitrogenous compounds in the xylem (bleeding) sap of lines of field-grownPhaseolus vulgaris L., known to vary in N2 fixation and yield, were measured during growth with and without N fertilizer. Forty nine-67% of the total sap N was in the form of nitrate in fertilized plants, with low amounts of the ureides, allantoin and allantoic acid (4–12%). Ureides contributed between 17 and 38% to the total sap N of non-fertilized plants, with nitrate generally comprising less than 40%. Among the nine lines grown without fertilizer there were significant differences in the % of the sap N as ureides and also in the total mol N ml–1 sap.The ASN/GLN ratio (mol/mol) was greater in sap collected from the two parental lines given fertilizer compared with non-fertilized plants. However the actual ratio varied between the parental lines. Together the two amides generally comprised between 43–62% of the amino-N in sap samples from the two parental lines with or without N fertilizer. For each N treatment (fertilized or non-fertilized) there were no obvious differences in sap composition between the high N2 fixing lines and the low N2 fixing lines. However there was generally a positive relationship between the rate of N translocation (total N concn. ml–1 sap x rate of exudation) and the ranking of the lines on the basis of higher N2 fixation rates (acetylene reduction), which was to a large extent independent of the source of N available to the plant.  相似文献

Effects of N source and media-N and P levels were examined on growth, N uptake, and N2 fixation ofAzolla pinnata withAnabaena azollae association (azolla) at two inoculum-P concentrations. Each expeiment was conducted for 7 days in a growth chamber using azolla at a predetermined inoculum-P concentration and the growth media containing a combination of four levels of P (0, 15, 75, and 200 M) and three levels (0, 1, and 5 mM) of either15N-enriched NH 4 + as ammonium sulfate or15N-enriched NO 3 as potassium nitrate. Nitrogen uptake and N2 fixation were measured by15N isotopic dilution method. Tissue P and N, N uptake, and N2-fixation increased with increasing P concentration in the media regardless of the inoculum-P level of azolla. Increasing P concentration in the media increased growth of azolla at low inoculum P, but the effect on high inoculum-P azolla was either small or absen. High inoculum-P concentration resulted in increased growth, tissue-N and P concentrations, N uptake, and N2 fixation by azolla. Ammonium in the growth media caused larger increase in tissue-N and greater repression of N2 fixation than equimolar concentration of NO 3 . In the presence of NH 4 + or NO 3 , in the growth media, N uptake by azolla exceeded the corresponding decrease in N2 fixation, resulting in an overall increase in tissue-N concentration. Phosphorus in the media tended to negate the inhibitory effect of NH 4 + or NO 3 on N2 fixation. A multiple regression model showed that the effect of tissue-N on N2 fixation was negative while that of tissue-P was positive. Therefore, a relative change in tissue-N and P appeared to regulate N2 fixation. Tissue-N and P had similar effects on relative growth rate of azolla also. Inoculum-P level of azolla was important in determining the response to media-P.This research was supported by a grant from USAID under Indo-US Science and Technology Initiative.  相似文献

Complete annual cycles of N2O and CH4 flux in forest soils at a beech and at a spruce site at the Höglwald Forest were followed in 1997 by use of fully automatic measuring systems. In order to test if on a microsite scale differences in the magnitude of trace gas exchange between e.g. areas in direct vicinity of stems and areas in the interstem region at both sites exist, tree chambers and gradient chambers were installed in addition to the already existing interstem chambers at our sites. N2O fluxes were in a range of –4.6–473.3 g N2O-N m–2 h–1 at the beech site and in a range of –3.7–167.2 g N2O-N m–2 h–1 at the spruce site, respectively. Highest N2O emissions were observed during and at the end of a prolonged frost period, thereby further supporting previous findings that frost periods are of crucial importance for controlling annual N2O losses from temperate forests. Fluxes of CH4 were in a range of +10.4––194.0 g CH4 m–2 h–1 at the beech site and in a range of –4.4––83.5 g CH4 m–2 h–1 at the spruce site. In general, both N2O-fluxes as well as CH4-fluxes were higher at the beech site. On a microsite scale, N2O and CH4 fluxes at the beech site were highest within the stem area (annual mean: 49.6±3.3 g N2O-N m–2 h–1; –77.2±3.1 g CH4 m–2 h–1), and significantly lower within interstem areas (18.5±1.4 g N2O-N m–2 h–1; –60.2±1.8 g CH4 m–2 h–1). Significantly higher values of total N, C and pH in the organic layer, as well as increased soil moisture, especially in spring, in the stem areas, are likely to contribute to the higher N2O fluxes within the stem area of the beech. Also for the spruce site, such differences in trace gas fluxes could be demonstrated to exist (mean annual N2O emission within (a) stem areas: 9.7±0.9 g N2O-N m–2 h–1 and (b) interstem areas: 6.2±0.6 g N2O-N m–2 h–1; mean annual CH4 uptake within (a) stem areas: –26.1±0.6 g CH4 m–2 h–1 and (b) interstem areas: –38.4±0.8 g CH4 m–2 h–1), though they were not as pronounced as at the beech site.  相似文献

With the ability to symbiotically fix atmospheric N2, legumes may lack the N-limitations thought to constrain plant response to elevated concentrations of atmospheric CO2. The growth and photosynthetic responses of two perennial grassland species were compared to test the hypotheses that (1) the CO2 response of wild species is limited at low N availability, (2) legumes respond to a greater extent than non-fixing forbs to elevated CO2, and (3) elevated CO2 stimulates symbiotic N2 fixation, resulting in an increased amount of N derived from the atmosphere. This study investigated the effects of atmospheric CO2 concentration (365 and 700 mol mol–1) and N addition on whole plant growth and C and N acquisition in an N2-fixing legume (Lupinus perennis) and a non-fixing forb (Achillea millefolium) in controlled-chamber environments. To evaluate the effects of a wide range of N availability on the CO2 response, we incorporated six levels of soil N addition starting with native field soil inherently low in N (field soil + 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, or 20 g N m–2 yr–1). Whole plant growth, leaf net photosynthetic rates (A), and the proportion of N derived from N2 fixation were determined in plants grown from seed over one growing season. Both species increased growth with CO2enrichment, but this response was mediated by N supply only for the non-fixer, Achillea. Its response depended on mineral N supply as growth enhancements under elevated CO2 increased from 0% in low N soil to +25% at the higher levels of N addition. In contrast, Lupinus plants had 80% greater biomass under elevated CO2 regardless of N treatment. Although partial photosynthetic acclimation to CO2 enrichment occurred, both species maintained comparably higher A in elevated compared to ambient CO2 (+38%). N addition facilitated increased A in Achillea, however, in neither species did additional N availability affect the acclimation response of A to CO2. Elevated CO2 increased plant total N yield by 57% in Lupinus but had no effect on Achillea. The increased N in Lupinus came from symbiotic N2 fixation, which resulted in a 47% greater proportion of N derived from fixation relative to other sources of N. These results suggest that compared to non-fixing forbs, N2-fixers exhibit positive photosynthetic and growth responses to increased atmospheric CO2 that are independent of soil N supply. The enhanced amount of N derived from N2 fixation under elevated CO2 presumably helps meet the increased N demand in N2-fixing species. This response may lead to modified roles of N2-fixers and N2-fixer/non-fixer species interactions in grassland communities, especially those that are inherently N-poor, under projected rising atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

In order to quantify N2-emissions from a spruce and a beech site at the Höglwald Forest, a new measuring system was developed, that allowed simultaneous, direct determination of N2- and N2O-emission with high accuracy (detection limit approx. 10 g N m–2 h–1 for N2 and <1 g for N2O) using a gas-flow core method. This method requires exchange of the soil atmosphere with an artificial atmosphere, that differs only in that N2 is substituted by He. The measuring system, the methodology of measurements and validation experiments are described in detail. Due to the huge heterogeneity of denitrification activity in different soil cores taken from our forest sites, no general trends of N2 and N2O production in relation to soil moisture and temperature could be demonstrated. Based on reasonable number of measurements, this work gives for the first time an estimate of the magnitude of N2-losses from temperate forest soils. Both the magnitude of N2-emissions (spruce: 7.2±0.7 kg N2-N ha–1 yr–1; beech: 12.4±3.1 kg N2-N ha–1 yr–1), as well as the N2O–N2 ratio (spruce: 0.136±0.04; beech: 0.52±0.19) were significantly higher for soils from the beech sites as compared to soils from the spruce site. The results suggests that N2-emissions from N-saturated forest soils, still receiving high loads of atmospheric N-deposition, are approx. 30% of atmospheric N-input at the spruce site, and approx. 50% at the beech site. Our results demonstrate that losses of nitrogen in the form of N2 cannot be neglected in the context of calculating N-balances for given forest sites.  相似文献

Summary Accurate estimates of N2 fixation by legumes are requisite to determine their net contribution of fixed N2 to the soil N pool. However, estimates of N2 fixation derived with the traditional15N methods of isotope dilution and AN value are costly.Field experiments utilizing15N-enriched (NH4)2SO4 were conducted to evaluate a modified difference method for determining N2 fixation by fababean, lentil, Alaska pea, Austrian winter pea, blue lupin and chickpea, and to quantify their net contribution of fixed N2 to the soil N pool. Spring wheat and non-nodulated chickpea, each fertilized with two N rates, were utilized as non-fixing controls.Estimates of N2 fixation based on the two control crops were similar. Increasing the N rate to the controls reduced AN values 32, 18 and 43% respectively in 1981, 1982 and 1983 resulting in greater N2 fixation estimates. Mean seasonal N2 fixation by fababean, lentil and Austrian winter pea was near 80 kg N ha–1, pea and blue lupin near 60 kg N ha–1, and chickpea less than 10 kg N ha–1. The net effects of the legume crops on the soil N pool ranged from a 70 kg N ha–1 input by lentil in 1982, to a removal of 48 kg N ha–1 by chickpea in 1983.Estimates of N2 fixation obtained by the proposed modified difference method approximate those derived by the isotope dilution technique, are determined with less cost, and are more reliable than the total plant N procedure.Scientific paper No. 6605. The fixation of molecular nitrogen (N2fix) by cyanobacteria in situ and in PO4-P enrichment experiments was investigated in large shallow Lake Võrtsjärv in 1998–2000. In this lake, N2fix started when TN/TP mass ratio was about 20, which is much higher than Redfield mass ratio 7. The rate of N2fix varied between 0.81 and 2.61 gN l–1 d–1 and maximum rate (2.61 gN l–1 d–1) was measured in 15.08.2000. In L. Võrtsjärv a lag period of a couple of weaks occurred between the set-up of favourable conditions for N2fix as the appearance of N2-fixing species and depletion of mineral nitrogen, and the real N2fix itself. However, if the favorable conditions for N2fix occurred in the lake, N2fix started after enrichment with PO4-P in mesocosms even then when no N2fix was detected in the lake. N2fix in mesocosms was also more intensive than in lake water. In our experiments PO4-P concentrations higher than 100 gP l–1started to inhibit N2fix.  相似文献

Inoculation of sugar mill by-products compost with N2-fixing bacteria may improve its quality by increasing total N and available P. Compost was inoculated with Azotobacter vinelandii(ATCC 478), Beijerinckia derxii (ATCC 49361), and Azospirillumsp. TS8, each alone and all three together. Numbers of all N2-fixing bacteria in compost declined from an initial population of 5×105cellsg–1 during incubation. The population of Azotobacter declined to approximately 2×102cellsg–1 and the population of Beijerinckia and Azospirillum declined to approximately 9×103 and 3.5×104cellsg–1 respectively, at day 50. Inoculation with N2-fixing bacteria increased acetylene reduction, total N by 6–16 and available P by 25–30% in comparison to the uninoculated control. Increasing the N content and P availability of compost increases its value and there may be additional benefit from providing N2 fixing bacteria.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation was measured in four subarctic streams substantially modified by beaver (Castor canadensis) in Quebec. Acetylene-ethylene (C2H2 C2H4) reduction techniques were used during the 1982 ice-free period (May–October) to estimate nitrogen fixation by microorganisms colonizing wood and sediment. Mean seasonal fixation rates were low and patchy, ranging from zero to 2.3 × 10–3 µmol C2H4 · cm–2 · h–1 for wood, and from zero to 7.0 × 10–3 µmol C2H4 · g AFDM–1 · h–1 for sediment; 77% of all wood and 63% of all sediment measurements showed no C2H2 reduction. Nonparametric statistical tests were unable to show a significant difference (p > 0.05) in C2H2 reduction rates between or within sites for wood species or by sediment depth.Nitrogen contributed by microorganisms colonizing wood in riffles of beaver influenced watersheds was small (e.g., 0.207 g N · m–2 · y–1) but greater than that for wood in beaver ponds (e.g., 0.008 g N · m–2 · y–1) or for streams without beaver (e.g., 0.003 g N · m–2 · y–1). Although mass specific nitrogen fixation rates did not change significantly as beaver transform riffles into ponds, the nitrogen fixed by organisms colonizing sediment in pond areas (e.g., 5.1 g N · m–2 · y–1) was greater than that in riffles (e.g., 0.42 g N · m–2 · y–1). The annual nitrogen contribution is proportional to the amount of sediment available for microbial colonization. We estimate that total nitrogen accumulation in sediment, per unit area, is enhanced 9 to 44 fold by beaver damming a section of stream.  相似文献

The measurement of natural 15N abundance is a well-established technique for the identification and quantification of biological N2 fixation in plants. Associative N2 fixing bacteria have been isolated from sugarcane and reported to contribute potentially significant amounts of N to plant growth and development. It has not been established whether Australian commercial sugarcane receives significant input from biological N2 fixation, even though high populations of N2 fixing bacteria have been isolated from Australian commercial sugarcane fields and plants. In this study, 15N measurements were used as a primary measure to identify whether Australian commercial sugarcane was obtaining significant inputs of N via biological N2 fixation. Quantification of N input, via biological N2 fixation, was not possible since suitable non-N2 fixing reference plants were not present in commercial cane fields. The survey of Australian commercially grown sugarcane crops showed the majority had positive leaf 15N values (73% >3.00, 63% of which were >5.00), which was not indicative of biological N2 fixation being the major source of N for these crops. However, a small number of sites had low or negative leaf 15N values. These crops had received high N fertiliser applications in the weeks prior to sampling. Two possible pathways that could result in low 15N values for sugarcane leaves (other than N2 fixation) are proposed; high external N concentrations and foliar uptake of volatilised NH3. The leaf 15N value of sugarcane grown in aerated solution culture was shown to decrease by approximately 5 with increasing external N concentration (0.5–8.0 mM), with both NO3 and NH4 + nitrogen forms. Foliar uptake of atmospheric NH3 has been shown to result in depleted leaf 15N values in many plant species. Acid traps collected atmospheric N with negative 15N value (–24.45±0.90) from above a field recently surface fertilised with urea. The 15N of leaves of sugarcane plants either growing directly in the soil or isolated from soil in pots dropped by 3.00 in the same field after the fertiliser application. Both the high concentration of external N in the root zone (following the application of N-fertilisers) and/or subsequent foliar uptake of volatilised NH3 could have caused the depleted leaf 15N values measured in the sugarcane crops at these sites.  相似文献

In consideration of their origin the adaptive strategies of the evergreen species of the Mediterranean maquis were analysed. Rosmarinus officinalis L., Erica arborea L., and Erica multiflora L. had the lowest net photosynthetic rate (PN) in the favourable period [7.8±0.6 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], the highest PN decrease (on an average 86 % of the maximum) but the highest recovery capacity (>70 % of the maximum) at the first rainfall in September. Cistus incanus L. and Arbutus unedo L. had the highest PN during the favourable period [15.5±5.2 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], 79 % decrease during drought, and a lower recovery capacity (on an average 54 %). Quercus ilex L., Phillyrea latifolia L., and Pistacia lentiscus L. had an intermediate PN in the favourable period [9.2±1.3 mol(CO2) m–2s–1, mean value], a lower reduction during drought (on an average 63 %), and a range from 62 % (Q. ilex and P. latifolia) to 39 % (P. lentiscus) of recovery capacity. The Mediterranean species had higher decrease in PN and stomatal conductance during drought and a higher recovery capacity than the pre-Mediterranean species. Among the pre-Mediterranean species, P. latifoliahad the best adaptation to long drought periods also by its higher leaf mass per area (LMA) which lowered leaf temperature thus decreasing transpiration rate during drought. Moreover, its leaf longevity determined a more stable leaf biomass during the year. Among the Mediteranean species, R. officinalis was the best adapted species to short drought periods by its ability to rapidly recover. Nevertheless, R. officinalis had the lowest tolerance to high temperatures by its PN dropping below half its maximum value when leaf temperature was over 33.6°C. R. officinalismay be used as a bioindicator species of global change. This revised version was published online in March 2005 with corrections to the page numbers.  相似文献

Summary Subterranean clover plants were grown as swards (about 2000 plants/m2) under controlled conditions with N provided either by N2-fixation (NO 3 withheld) or by assimilation of NO 3 (NO 3 supplied). Crop growth rates were measured by dry matter sampling over periods of up to 70 days at PPFD values of 400–1000 mole quanta/m2/s. When NO 3 was supplied from sowing the swards grew more rapidly than when the swards were not supplied with NO 3 and plants had to establish an N2-fixing apparatus. When inter-plant competition was reduced within the sward, a difference in growth rate in favour of NO 3 -fed plants continued for at least 50 days. When however, a closed canopy was allowed to form, the NO 3 -fed swards had more dry weight than the N2-fed swards at the time of canopy closure but thereafter the two swards grew at similar rates at light flux densities of above about 800 mole quanta/m2/s. At light flux densities of about 400 mole quanta/m2/s N2-fed swards had a growth rate 70–80% of that of NO 3 -fed plants. NO 3 -fed plants had a higher organic N content than did N2-fed plants under all conditions.  相似文献
