Coupling of incident light through an air region into an S-shape silver (Ag) plasmonic nanowire waveguide (SSAPNW) is a highly difficult challenge of light guiding on the surface of metal nanowire. In this paper, we numerically analyze the coupling effect of an SSAPNW which is covered by a dielectric medium using a finite element method. The coupling effect can be modulated by adjusting the Ag nanowire diameter and the covering dielectric medium width and wavelength of incident light, and the propagation length of surface plasmon (SP) coupling can be maximized. Simulation results reveal that the field confinement can be significantly improved and the majority of the electric field can be carried on the surface of a bending Ag nanowire. The effect of electric field transport along an SSAPNW due to SP coupling and Fabry-Perot resonance is investigated for different dimensions and lengths. Accordingly, long propagation lengths of about 41.5 μm for 10?×?SSAPNW at an incident wavelength of 810 nm and longer propagation length can be achieved if more sections of an SSAPNW are used. Simulation results offer an efficient method for optimizing SP coupling into bending metal nanowire waveguides and promote the realization of highly integrated plasmonic devices.  相似文献

Surface plasmon resonances on bilayer aluminum nanowire gratings are studied in both theory and experiment. It is found that there are two kinds of surface plasmon on the bilayer metallic gating: longitudinal aluminum/dielectric/aluminum slit and lateral aluminum/dielectric interface waveguide mode. The surface plasmon waveguide mode resonance in the slits makes the grating act as a transverse magnetic (TM)-passing polarizer. With the lateral waveguide mode resonance, certain wavelengths of the incident TM light are translated to aluminum/air or aluminum/substrate waveguide light, and the grating acts as a color filter. With both resonances, the bilayer nanowire grating can be a compact-integrated polarizer and color filter.  相似文献

A metal nanowire placed in a dielectric hole is proposed to guide THz modified surface plasmon polaritons (MSPPs). In theory, the MSPP waveguide can guide THz wave with nano-scale mode width (570 nm) and simultaneously ultra-long propagation distance (2.4 m). Compared with conventional surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a bare metal nanowire, the MSPPs’ mode nanoconfinement can be maintained by keeping a part of the mode field nearly unchanged. On the other hand, by modifying the rest of the mode field, the THz power inside the metal nanowire can be significantly reduced for MSPPs, which dramatically decreases the propagation loss (3 orders of magnitude).

We present a theoretical modal investigation of plasmonic perfect absorbers (PPAs) based on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) for biosensing applications. We design the PPA geometry with a layer of periodic metallic nanoparticles on one side of a dielectric substrate and a single metallic layer on the opposite side. The electromagnetic (EM) fields confine partly in the surrounding medium above the substrate and within the substrate itself. We examine the modes of the PPA geometry for a wavelength range of 600–1500 nm. The fundamental mode of the system provides perfect absorption for a wide angle of incidence 0–70°. The second-order mode shows a strong angular dependence with a sharp resonance and exhibits perfect optical absorption when the critical coupling condition for LSPR is achieved. The coupling condition depends on the size, periodicity, dielectric spacer, and the surrounding material of the system. The strong dependence on the surrounding material makes it a promising candidate for biosensing applications. We introduce a novel approach to investigate the angular dependence of the refractive index change for the PPA system. This novel technique contributes the significant attributes of the LSPR sensors, can be used for any required resonance wavelength depending on geometric design, and it also provides sensitivity analogous to the standard surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors.  相似文献

We numerically investigate the buried effects of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) modes for the periodic silver-shell nanopearl dimer (PSSND) array and their solid counterparts with different buried depths in a silica substrate by means of finite element method with three-dimensional calculations. The investigated PSSND array is an important novel geometry for plasmonic metal nanoparticles (MNPs), combining the highly attractive nanoscale optical properties of both metallic nanoshell and cylindrical pore filled with a dielectric. Numerical results for SPR modes corresponding to the effects of different illumination wavelengths, absorption spectra, pore–dielectric, electric field components and total field distribution, charge density distribution, and the model of the induced local field or an applied field of the PSSND array are reported as well. It can be found that the buried MNPs with cylindrical pore filled with a dielectric in a substrate exhibit tunable SPR modes corresponding to the bonding and antibonding modes that are not observed for their solid counterparts.  相似文献

A variant of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy has been developed that involves a coupling of plasmon resonances in a thin metal film and waveguide modes in a dielectric overcoating. This new technique is referred to as coupled plasmon-waveguide resonance (CPWR) spectroscopy. It combines a greatly enhanced sensitivity (due to increased electromagnetic field intensities at the dielectric surface) and spectral resolution (due to decreased resonance linewidths), with the ability to directly measure anisotropies in refractive index and optical absorption coefficient in a dielectric film adsorbed onto the surface of the overcoating. Experimental data obtained with an egg phosphatidylcholine bilayer are presented to document these properties.  相似文献

The plasmonic properties of two closely adjacent gold nanocones of different sizes have been investigated. The plasmon modes of the first nanocone couple with the plasmon modes of the second one due to which a broad peak and a narrow peak emerges in the extinction spectrum, which can be categorized as bright and dark plasmon modes. The destructive interference of the two modes results in a sharp Fano dip in the spectrum. Several configurations of the conical nanodimer have been considered, which suggests that the plasmon coupling in the nanocone dimer is not only dependent on the interparticle distance and size of the nanoparticles but also on their spatial arrangement. The localized high near-field energy in the nanodimer can be used for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy applications.  相似文献

In this paper, the coupling interaction is investigated between a metallic nanowire array and a metal film under the Kretschmann condition. The plasmonic multilayer is composed of a metallic nanowire array embedded in a polymer layer positioned above a metal film, exploiting the classical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) configuration. We analyze the influence of various structural parameters of the metallic nanowire array on the SPR spectrum of thin metal film. The results show that the coupling interactions of nanowires with the metal film can greatly affect SPR resonance wavelength and increase SPR sensitivity. The coupling strength of metallic nanowire array and metal film also impacts resonance wavelength, which can be used to adjust SPR range but have little effect on its sensitivity. The results are confirmed using a dipole coupling resonance model of metallic nanowire. We demonstrated that this nanostructured hybrid structure can be used for high sensitivity SPR monitoring in a large spectral range, which is important for advanced SPR measurement including fiber-optic SPR sensing technology.  相似文献

A graphene-based cylindrical hybrid surface plasmon polariton waveguide, composed of a silicon nanowire core surrounded by a silica layer and then a graphene layer, is investigated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The analytical solutions and the numerical simulation show that an ultra-small mode area and a large propagation length can be achieved with this waveguide. Utilizing the perturbation theory of coupled mode, we demonstrate that the six lowest-order coupling modes originate from the coupling of the three lowest-order single-waveguide modes, and the m?=?1 order yy-coupling mode possesses the maximum coupling length and the minimum crosstalk. This waveguide can be used for photonic integrated circuits in the mid-infrared range.  相似文献

We design two kinds of plasmonic broadband polarization splitters based on dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) with elliptical Au or Ag nanowire in this paper. It is analyzed for the polarization independent characterestics of the designed DC-PCF by the finite element method (FEM). In order to excite the surface plasmon resonance (SPR), the metal Au and Ag are filled into elliptical central air hole. The resonance coupling between the fourth- or fifth-order surface plasmon modes (SPMs) and core-guided modes (CGMs) are founded by this numerical simulation. The device lengths of the designed splitters with Au nanowire are 2937 and 827 μm at the wavelength of 1.31 and 1.55 μm, respectively. As the extinction ratios are better than ?20 dB, its bandwidths are better than 94 and 103 nm. For the designed Ag nanowire splitter, the device lengths are 3066 or 809 μm at 1.31 or 1.55 μm, respectively. The bandwidths with the extinction ratio better than ?20 dB are 66 and 104 nm, respectively.  相似文献

Ring modes with large wave vectors cannot be easily excited on a single disk by the plane wave illumination with the polarization parallel to the disk interface. In this work, we show that special antisymmetric ring gap modes on the surface of the disk in close proximity to the metallic thin film can be excited in the visible light region of the electromagnetic spectrum. In the presence of the film, the strong plasmon interaction between disk and film causes ring gap modes to have lower energies and be more easily excited. We apply the plasmon hybridization method to illustrate the ring gap modes arising from the interaction between the localized disk plasmons and the continuum surface plasmons. The calculated hybridization data show good agreement with the results of finite element simulations. The excitation of ring gap modes provides further insight into the strong coupling of plasmons and the design of novel nanostructures.

We demonstrate theoretically that plane wave propagating in free space can be used to excite the whispering gallery mode in dielectric microresonators grown on the top of nanoplasmonic structures, with the assistance of surface plasmon wave. We have demonstrated the coupling modes using both localized and propagating surface plasmon-supporting nanostructure surfaces.  相似文献

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-induced local field effect in Al-Au-Ag trimetallic three-layered nanoshells has been studied theoretically. Because of having three kinds of metal, three plasmonic bands have been observed in the absorption spectra and the local electric field factor spectra. The local electric field enhancement and the corresponding resonance wavelength for different plasmon coupling modes and spatial positions of the Al-Au-Ag nanoshells with various geometry dimensions are investigated to find the maximum local electric field enhancement. The calculation results indicate that the giant local electric field enhancement could be stimulated by the plasmon coupling in the middle Au shell or the outer Ag shell and could be optimized by increasing the Ag shell thickness and decreasing the Au shell thickness. What is more, the local electric field enhancement also nonmonotonously depends on the dielectric constant of the environment; the local electric field intensity will be weakened when the surrounding dielectric constant is too small or too large.

We investigate the propagation characteristics of the fundamental surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode of a finite-width metal–dielectric–metal waveguide. By changing the refractive index or the thickness of the dielectric layer of the waveguide, the SPP mode can be transformed from a mode confined in the dielectric layer into a mode confined around the metal corners. There always exists a condition at which the mode field distribution in the dielectric layer becomes almost perfectly uniform along the direction parallel to the metal layers, and this condition is insensitive to the width of the waveguide. It is also possible to obtain an ultra-uniform field distribution by controlling the refractive index of a different dielectric placed on both sides of the waveguide. The waveguide can be used as a basic structure for the realization of nanosized photonic devices and sensors.  相似文献

A novel plasmonic structure based on an anticrossing bandgap prism coupling technique is proposed. The study has been carried out using photonic crystals based on diffraction gratings (bounded by dielectrics with identical dielectric functions) together with a high refractive index prism to couple the long-range surface plasmon polaritons to photons. We analyse the structure and demonstrate the ability for tuning the propagation constants of plasmon modes by changing the thickness of the gold grating. The comparison to non-bandgap techniques is studied, and the influence of the plasmonic configuration on the plasmon propagation constant is discussed as well. Experimental measurements were also carried out to confirm the validity of our model.  相似文献

Finite element method (FEM) simulations have been carried out on free-standing and finite dielectric substrate-supported eccentric (i) silica core-gold nanoshell dimers and (ii) gold core-silica nanoshell dimers for understanding their near- and far-field plasmonic properties. In the case of eccentric silica core-gold nanoshell dimers, multiple peaks are observed in the near- and far-field spectra due to the plasmon hybridization. The number of peaks is found to be sensitive to the core offset parameters of the nanoshells forming nanodimer. The wavelength locations of the peaks due to the constructive coupling of the lower order modes found relatively more sensitive to the dielectric substrate. The number of peaks in the near- and far-field spectra found the same presence and absence of the dielectric substrate. The values of full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the peaks observed in the near-field spectra are found larger as compared to those observed in the far-field spectra. In contrast, in the case of eccentric gold core-silica nanoshell dimers, multiple peaks have not been observed. The FWHM of the observed peak is found sensitive to the core offset parameters of the nanoshells, and the number of peaks in the near field- and far-field spectra found not same in the presence and absence of the dielectric substrate. Moreover, the differences in near- and far-field spectra of plasmonically coupled (i) concentric nanoshells, (ii) eccentric nanoshells, and (iii) concentric and eccentric nanoshells also investigated numerically.

We demonstrate significantly longer plasmon lifetime and stronger electric field enhancement by lifting the nanoantenna arrays above the substrate by dielectric nanopillars. The role of the pillar is to offer a more homogeneous dielectric background allowing stronger diffraction coupling among plasmonic nanoantennas leading to a Fanolike asymmetric lineshape. It is found that the electric fields around the nanoantennas can be greatly enhanced when the Fanolike resonance is excited, and a 4.2 times enhancement is achieved compared with the pure resonance in individual nanoantennas. Furthermore, only a collective surface mode with its electric fields of the same direction as the induced electric moment in the nanoantennas could mediate the excitation of such a Fanolike resonance. More importantly, the sensitivity and the figure of merit (FOM) of this plasmonic structure can reach as high as 900 nm/RIU and 53, respectively. Our study offers a new, simple, and efficient way to design the plasmonic systems with desired electric field enhancement and spectral lineshape for different applications.  相似文献

An arrayed structure of asymmetric multilayered ultra-thin metal stripes is proposed to achieve a narrow transmission peak in an ultra-broad transmission valley, which is formed due to the destructive multiple-interference tunneling existed in an ultra-thin metal and dielectric multilayers. The transmission peak is influenced by two resonant modes. One is the coupled gap surface plasmon (cg-SP) resonance mode confined in entire multilayered ridges, the other is the modified gap surface plasmon (g-SP) mode within metal-dielectric layers. Furthermore, the transmission mode and the stopband are tunable in a wide range through designing the dimension parameters. The proposed plasmonic structure is promising for wideband filters.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the coupling between Tamm plasmons and localized surface plasmons (LSPs) as well as propagating surface plasmons (PSPs) in a multilayer structure consisting of a metallic nanowire array and a spatially separated metal–dielectric Bragg reflector (DBR). A clear anticrossing behavior of the resonances is observed in the dispersion diagram resulting from the coupling, which is well explained by the coupled oscillator model. The coupling also creates new hybrid LSP or PSP modes with narrow bandwidths and unique spectral features. Upon the excitation of these hybrid modes, the local fields underneath the nanowires for the hybrid LSPs or near the lower metal layer surface for the hybrid PSPs are both enhanced greatly as compared with those achieved in the structure without DBR, which has potential applications in nonlinear optics and surface-enhanced spectroscopies.  相似文献
