Loss of habitat and chemical use associated with agriculture can cause population declines of wild pollinators. Less is known about the evolutionary consequences of interactions between species used in commercial agriculture and wild pollinators. Given population declines of many wild bee species, it is crucial to understand if commercial queens become established in natural areas, if wild bees visit agricultural fields and have the potential to interact with commercial bees, and if gene flow occurs between commercial and wild bees. We drew on a long-term data set that documents commercial bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) use in New England, and we conducted genetic analyses of foraging B. impatiens from areas with varying intensities of commercial bee use. In agricultural areas with a history of commercial bee use we also sampled bees directly from commercial hives. We found significant genetic differences among foraging B. impatiens and B. impatiens sampled directly from hives (average pairwise F′ST = 0.14), but not among samples of foraging bees from natural areas (average F′ST among foraging bees?=?0.002). Furthermore, Bayesian analysis of population structure revealed that foraging bees caught in areas with a history of commercial bee use grouped with samples from natural areas. These results document an agricultural setting where there was no widespread introgression of alleles from commercial bumble bees to wild bumble bees, commercial bumble bees did not become established in natural areas, and wild bees were providing pollination services to crops.  相似文献

The antifungal activity and mechanism of fengycin in the presence and absence of commercial surfactin against Rhizopus stolonifer were investigated. The MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) of fengycin without commercial surfactin added was 0.4 mg/ml while the MIC of fengycin with commercial surfactin added was 2.0 mg/ml. Fengycin acted on cell membrane and cellular organs and inhibited DNA synthesis. The antifungal effect of fengycin was reduced after commercial surfactin was added. All these results suggest that the fungal cell membrane may be the primary target of fengycin action and commercial surfactin may reduce the antifungal activity of fengycin.  相似文献

The commercial value of the ichthyofauna of the Bering Sea within Russian waters (Exclusive Economic Zone) is discussed. The ichthyofauna of this region comprises 344 species of fish and fish-like. Most of the species (283 species, or 82.3%) have no commercial value. The rest have commercial value (47 species, or 13.7%) or have the potential commercial value (14 species, 4.1%). Active and large-scale fishery is performed for 27 commercial species both in the open sea and in the coastal areas (mostly by ships); another twenty species are harvested irregularly by local coastal or nearshore fishery.  相似文献

At present, more than 100 strains of Lentinula edodes are cultivated on a commercial scale in China. A simple, reliable, and effective method to distinguish some commercial strains of the superior type from other commercial strains is very important for the Lentinula industry. In this study, 23 commercial strains of L. edodes cultivated widely in China at present were collected and analyzed with randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique. Three informative dominant sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers were developed by designing three pairs of specific SCAR primers from three sequenced differential RAPD bands, respectively. Based on the three SCAR markers, three different multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) phenotypes were detected among the 23 studied commercial strains and in which a multilocus phenotype characterizing a commercial strain Cr02 of the superior type could potentially be used to distinguish this strain from the other 22 studied commercial strains. To our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the development of a multiplex PCR technique based on SCAR markers for detecting the molecular phenotypes among commercial strains of L. edodes in China.  相似文献

Modern biological research is dependent on tools developed and provided by commercial suppliers, and antibodies for immunohistochemistry are among the most frequently used of these tools. Not all commercial antibodies perform as expected, however; this problem leads researchers to waste time and money when using antibodies that perform inadequately. Different commercial suppliers offer antibodies of varying degrees of quality and, in some cases, are unable to provide expert technical support for the immunohistochemical use of their antibodies. This article briefly describes the production of commercial antibodies from the manufacturer''s perspective and presents some guidelines for choosing appropriate commercial antibodies for immunohistochemistry. Additionally, the article suggests steps to establish mutually beneficial relationships between commercial antibody suppliers and researchers who use them. Sensory properties and consumer perception of 2 'home-made'and 4 commercial dairy ice creams were examined. Conventional profiling by a trained panel found that most samples differed significantly in all attributes, but distinction of 'home-made'from commercial products was limited to few attributes. Principal component analysis separated the 'home-made'products from the commercial ones mainly on the basis of differences in appearance, aroma, creamy flavors and textural attributes. A consumer group (n=105) recorded preconception of 'home-made'ice cream acceptance, then received the product samples, in unlabeled condition, for assessment of degree of liking (DOL) and for identification as 'home-made'or commercial. Internal preference mapping of the DOL ratings showed that consumers were more closely grouped around samples which had higher intensities of certain attributes. Higher 'denseness', 'vanilla'aroma and 'buttery'flavor, were associated with more liking for commercial products. The 'home-made'high fat sample, although liked, tended to be grouped with commercial products. More marked textural attributes of 'ice crystals'and 'breakage'aided identification of the low-fat 'home-made'formulation, which was less liked overall. Overall, differences between the 'home-made'and commercial samples were small but consumer perception of the term 'home-made'was viewed favorably for dairy ice cream.  相似文献

For the protection of commercial interests, licensing bodies such as the EMA and health technology assessment institutions such as NICE restrict full access to unpublished evidence. Their respective policies on data transparency, however, lack a systematic account of (1) what kinds of commercial interests remain relevant after market approval has been granted, (2) what the specific types of public interest are that may override these commercial interests post approval, and, most importantly, (3) what criteria guide the trade-off between public interest and legitimate measures for the protection of commercial interest. Comparing potential commercial interests with seven specifications of relevant public interest reveals the lack of proportionality inherent in the current practices of EMA and NICE.  相似文献

Three strains of Streptococcus bovis, a homolactic bacterium capable of utilizing starch, were evaluated for growth kinetics and ability to decrease the pH of alfalfa silage. A selected strain was evaluated for its competitiveness as an inoculant with Enterococcus faecium, an organism used in inoculants, and for its ability to enhance the effect of a commercial inoculant. Testing was completed over three studies using wilted alfalfa (28 to 34% dry matter) ensiled into laboratory silos. Treatments were control, E. faecium, E. faecium and commercial inoculant, S. bovis, and S. bovis and commercial inoculant. Replicate silos were emptied and analyzed at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 40 days for pH, fermentation products, and nitrogen fractions. S. bovis alone lowered the pH quicker and improved silage parameters early in the fermentation compared with E. faecium, the commercial inoculant, and control treatments. When combined with a commercial inoculant, S. bovis lowered pH more quickly than the commercial inoculant alone and E. faecium plus commercial inoculant. At 40 days, S. bovis combination had lower pH and ammonia nitrogen and acetate contents than the E. faecium combination. Starch in the silage was not utilized by S. bovis as had been anticipated. Results indicate that S. bovis was more effective than E. faecium as a silage inoculant and could enhance a commercial inoculant on low-dry-matter alfalfa.  相似文献

Field experiments on about 4700 sheep at about forty different farms in North Wales are discussed. Crutching is the most effective control measure for lambs. Regular dipping with commercial arsenic-sulphur dips gives reasonable control except during adverse weather conditions. Dipping with zinc arsenite or with calomel proved, on the whole, less effective than dipping with commercial dip. Addition of calomel to commercial dip proved to be more effective than commercial dip alone. Preliminary observations are presented on the variation of the surface tension and viscosity of the dipping fluid as the number of sheep passing through the dip increased.  相似文献

Evidence for pollinator declines has led to concern that inadequate pollination services may limit crop yields. The global trade in commercial bumble bee (Bombus spp.) colonies provides pollination services for both glasshouse and open-field crops. For example, in the United Kingdom, commercial colonies of nonnative subspecies of the bumble bee Bombus terrestris L. imported from mainland Europe are widely used for the pollination of raspberries, Rubus idaeus L. The extent to which these commercial colonies supplement the services provided by wild pollinators has not been formally quantified and the impact of commercial bumble bees on native bees visiting the crop is unknown. Here, the impacts of allowing commercially available bumble bee colonies to forage on raspberry canes are assessed in terms of the yield of marketable fruit produced and the pollinator communities found foraging on raspberry flowers. No differences were found in the abundance, diversity, or composition of social bee species observed visiting raspberry flowers when commercial bumble bees were deployed compared with when they were absent. However, weight of marketable raspberries produced increased when commercial bees were present, indicating that wild pollinator services alone are inadequate for attaining maximum yields. The findings of the study suggests that proportional yield increases associated with deployment of commercial colonies may be small, but that nevertheless, investment in commercial colonies for raspberry pollination could produce very significant increases in net profit for the grower. Given potential environmental risks associated with the importation of nonnative bumble bees, the development of alternative solutions to the pollination deficit in raspberry crops in the United Kingdom may be beneficial.  相似文献

In Arizona, the subterranean termite Heterotermes aureus (Snyder) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) is the most economically important termite pest. We report here the evaluation of several commercial and experimental monitoring stations to capture and monitor H. aureus. In total, 12 monitoring stations were evaluated over two study periods. In 2001-2002, the commercial monitors Firstline and Termicon did not capture any H. aureus, whereas Termitrol did not capture significantly more termites than these two monitors. In contrast, three experimental Arizona Research Monitoring Stations (ARMS)--ARMS-PINE, ARMS-ASH, and ARMS-BBT--captured significantly more termites than Firstline and Termicon, and ARMS-BBT captured termites significantly more frequently than the commercial monitors. Similarly in 2003, the commercial monitors Firstline and Defender did not capture any H. aureus, whereas Extera did not capture significantly more termites than these two monitors. However, four monitor designs including the three most successful ARMS in 2001-2002 captured significantly more termites than Firstline and Defender, and ARMS-ASH captured termites significantly more often than the commercial monitors. On-ground ARMS monitors in general captured significantly more termites than commercial in-ground stations.  相似文献

Summary It is shown that when an exotic strain and a commercial strain differ genetically at a quantitative locus and at an adjoining marker locus, repeated backcrosses to the commercial strain, retaining only backcross progeny carrying the exotic marker allele, will allow the effective introgression of the linked quantitative allele from the exotic to the commercial strain. The introgression procedure will be particularly effective when exotic and commercial strains differ at two nearby marker loci with the quantitative locus bracketed between them. The simultaneous introgression of a number of quantitative alleles from different exotic strains, and appropriate selection procedures in the intercross generations that follow are also considered.  相似文献

Economic considerations require the use of inexpensive feedstocks for the fermentative production of moderate-value products. Our previous work has shown that peptones capable of supporting the growth of various microorganisms can be produced from inexpensive animal proteins, including meat and bone meal, feather meal, and blood meal, through alkaline or enzymatic hydrolysis. In this work, we explore how these experimental peptones compare to commercial peptones in terms of performance characteristics other than chemical make-up; these characteristics can impact fermentation operating cost. It is shown that experimental peptone powders produced through enzymatic hydrolysis are highly hygroscopic and that their physical form is not stable to humid storage conditions; those produced through alkaline hydrolysis and commercial peptones are less hygroscopic. When used in growth medium, all peptones contribute haze to the solution; experiments show that the source of haze is different when using enzyme- versus alkali-hydrolyzed peptones. Alkali-hydrolyzed peptones and all peptones made from blood meal are stronger promoters of media foaming than the commercial peptones; some enzyme-hydrolyzed peptones support very little foam formation and are superior to the commercial peptones in this sense. Alkali-hydrolyzed peptones are roughly equivalent to commercial peptones in the coloration they contribute to media, while enzyme-hydrolyzed peptones contribute intense coloration to media. No peptone caused a significant change in the viscosity of media. The experimental peptones studied here may be acceptable low-cost substitutes for commercial peptones, but none is equivalent to the commercial products in all respects.  相似文献

Yeast strains were isolated from dried sweet potatoes (hoshi-imo), a traditional preserved food in Japan. Dough fermentation ability, freeze tolerance, and growth rates in molasses, which are important characteristics of commercial baker's yeast, were compared between these yeast strains and a commercial yeast derivative that had typical characteristics of commercial strains. Classification tests including pulse-field gel electrophoresis and fermentation/assimilation ability of sugars showed that almost the stains isolated belonged to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. One strain, ONY1, accumulated intracellular trehalose at a higher level than commercial strain T128. Correlated with intracellular trehalose contents, the fermentation ability of high-sugar dough containing ONY1 was higher. ONY1 also showed higher freeze tolerance in both low-sugar and high-sugar doughs. The growth rate of ONY1 was significantly higher under batch and fed-batch cultivation conditions using either molasses or synthetic medium than that of strain T128. These results suggest that ONY1 has potential commercial use as baker's yeast for frozen dough and high-sugar dough.  相似文献

Background: Diagnosis of acute and past infection with parvovirus B19 is based on detection of IgM and IgG antibodies.Objectives: To evaluate two commercial recombinant antigen-based enzyme immunoassay (EIA) test kits for detection of IgM and IgG antibodies to parvovirus B19 and to compare the commercial EIAs to in-house EIA test procedures.Study design: A panel of 121 sera was used to compare the three IgM EIAs. The panel included 84 sera submitted for parvovirus B19 testing and 37 sera that were IgM positive for other viral pathogens. The same serum panel plus an additional 14 sera submitted for B19 testing was used to compare the three IgG EIAs. The commercial EIAs were performed according to manufacturers' instructions. Using the in-house EIA test procedures as the reference, sensitivity and specificity for each of the commercial EIAs was determined.Results: The commercial B19 IgM EIAs showed agreements of 95.0 and 93.4% to the in-house IgM EIA. Compared to the in-house B19 IgM EIA, the commercial B19 IgM EIAs, were 97.4 and 97.5% sensitive, respectively. Specificities were 93.5 and 91.4%, respectively. Sensitivities for the commercial IgG EIAs, compared to in-house IgG EIA, were 88.0 and 85.2%, respectively, and specificities were 94.1 and 98.0%.Conclusion: We found that the commercial parvovirus B19 IgM and IgG EIAs are comparable to standard in-house EIAs and are suitable for testing for B19 antibodies in human sera.  相似文献

Slaughterhouse blood and offal preserved by pickling with 3% commercial sulfuric acid provides a means of producing blood and offal meal of quality comparable with commercial equivalents. The blood and offal meal produced by acidulation and sun drying had the higher pepsin digestibility index, and the blood meal had the highest available lysine value. The Australian industry producing invertebrate biological control agents (BCAs) commercially was described for the first time through interviews with company owners, citrus pest management researchers and citrus growers. This industry started with citrus pest management in 1971. Over 40 years it expanded from one company and one commercial BCA to peak at nine companies operating from 2002 to 2010. A period of consolidation resulted in five companies producing 36 commercial BCAs in 2014. Annual gross sales were <AU$10 million compared to >AU$400 million spent on insecticides. Barriers to industry growth included high costs of developing new commercial BCAs partly due to regulatory costs associated with importation of new BCAs into Australia, and low adoption of commercial BCAs due to limited access to information and training. The industry responded to these barriers by collaborating with stakeholders to develop new commercial BCAs, and developing an accreditation scheme to build technical capacity and encourage adoption.  相似文献
