Satureja khuzistanica is an endemic herb growing wild in Iran with interesting pharmacological and biological properties. Here, as an initial step of the domestication process, the variability of phytochemical and morphological traits among 69 individuals of eight natural populations of the plant was studied. The investigated characteristics were the essential oil content and composition, the rosmarinic acid (RA) content, and the leaf and flower morphologies. The Abdanan and Kaver populations showed the highest oil contents. The characterization by GC-FID and GC/MS analyses of the oils revealed that all 69 sampled individuals had carvacrol as the main component with very high contents (89.59-95.41%). The content of RA of the MeOH extracts of S. khuzistanica showed a high level of variability (coefficient of variation (CV) 50.0%) ranging from 0.59% (w/w) in the Paalam population to 1.81% (w/w) in the Abdanan population. The peduncle length and the leaf surface area (CVs of 47.39 and 47.21%, resp.) were the most variable morphological characteristics among the examined populations. The high level of phytochemical and morphological variability among the studied populations suggests a breeding approach during the domestication, to gain new, promising, and homogenous cultivars, attractive for the industry and agriculture.  相似文献

In this investigation, morphological, phytochemical and ISSR markers were used to estimate the relationships among and within seven populations of white savory (Satureja mutica), belonging to four provinces in Iran. The individuals were phenotypically diverse, which stamen length, corolla length, corolla diameter, calyx length, bract length, inflorescence length, calyx length and bracteole width were characteristics with the highest variation. Leaf dimensions were in significant correlation with flower and inflorescence characteristics. Chemical compounds of essential oils were found variable in various individuals and all samples were principally composed of phenolic constituents (carvacrol and/or thymol). As a consequence, the plants were classified into two major chemotypes including carvacrol and thymol. A total of 197 band positions were produced by 14 ISSR primers, of which 176 were found polymorphic with 88.91% polymorphism. ISSR genetic similarity values among individuals ranged between 0.45 and 0.94 which was indicative of a high level of genetic variation. Multiple regression analysis (MRA) revealed that phytochemical compositions as dependent variable, showed statistically significant correlation and in association with leaf and flower traits as independent variable, indicating a main role of leaf and flower on production of these compounds. Also, several ISSR fragments were found associated with some morphological traits and phytochemical compositions. The high diversity within and among populations of S. mutica according to different data systems could provide useful information for conservation and selection of cross-parents in breeding programs.  相似文献

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of cadmium (Cd) toxicity on accumulation, growth, physiological responses, and biochemical characters in summer savory (Satureja hortensis L.). Plants were subjected to different levels of Cd concentrations including 0 (control), 2.5, 5, and 15?mg L?1 in the growing medium. Cd exposure led to a significant increase in root and shoot Cd content. Calculation of bioaccumulation factor, translocation factor, and transfer coefficient revealed that Cd mostly accumulated in roots of S. hortensis and root to shoot transport was effectively restricted. Cd toxicity negatively affected plant growth and significantly reduced chlorophyll content. Contrarily, proline, soluble and reducing carbohydrates, anthocyanin content, and the activity of antioxidant enzymes significantly increased as a result of Cd exposure. Cd application led to a significant increase in essential oil content of S. hortensis. GC-MS analysis revealed that percentage main constitute of S. hortensi, carvacrol, which determines the quality of oil increased under the highest Cd treatment. Based on our findings, S. hortensis can be considered an invaluable alternative crop for mildly Cd-contaminated soils. Besides, due to the high potential of Cd accumulation in the root, S. hortensis may offer a feasible tool for phytostabilization purposes.  相似文献

Observations made on the anatomy of Phlomis and Eremostachys confirm previous views that the two genera are closely related, but characters such as trichomes and petiole structure can be used to distinguish species and groups of species. Within Phlomis, two distinct groups can be recognized using chromosome data. Phlomis section Phlomis has fewer (2 n = 20) and larger chromosomes and Phlomis section Phlomoides has more (2 n = 22) and smaller chromosomes. Eremostachys has chromosomes corresponding to those of Phlomis section Phlomoides.
Flavones are similar in both Phlomis and Eremostachys; the shrubby species belonging to Phlomis section Phlomis also have flavonols.  相似文献

The genus Hymenolepis contains a number of unarmed species. These frequently possess similar morphologies and are difficult to discriminate using the traditional method of comparative morphology. A parasite of the long-tailed field mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus in northeast Ireland, resembles the widespread H. diminuta which is usually a parasite of the rat. Analysis of general and specific proteins of the adults in A. sylvaticus , laboratory mice and rats suggests that the parasite found in the former host and H. diminuta are genetically distinct, though more closely allied than either is to H. nana, H. citelli and H. microstoma . Experimental analysis of the growth and expulsion of the Irish material and H. diminuta from SPF C57 laboratory mice, rats and wild caught A. sylvaticus suggests that there are behavioural and physiological differences in these taxa. Both are expelled from C57 mice though the hymenolepid from Irish A. sylvaticus persists for 3 days more than those of H. diminuta . The former prospers better in rats than H. diminuta in A. sylvaticus . Detailed comparison of the gross morphology of cysticercoid and adult H. diminuta and the Irish hymenolepid reveals differences in size rather than qualitative attributes. The occurrence of H. diminuta in A. sylvaticus is discussed. It is concluded that the hymenolepid recovered from Irish A. sylvaticus differs sufficiently from H. diminuta to warrant species status and that it has adapted to the alimentary canal of A. sylvaticus . This cestode material is described under the name of H. hibernia sp. nov.  相似文献

Taxonomic relationships amongst the genera of the southern African tribesPodalyrieae andLiparieae are discussed. Data gained from morphological, cytological and chemical investigations are analyzed cladistically to determine relationships. The genusCadia (tribeSophoreae) is included in the investigation to establish whether it should be transferred to thePodalyrieae. The results clearly indicate that thePodalyrieae andLiparieae are monophyletic and that they should be united, but thatHypocalyptus andCadia should be excluded. Within the monophyletic group, there are two distinct subclades each supported by three apomorphies. The results also show that there is a strong sister relationship betweenAmphithalea andCoelidium. In the taxonomic treatment theLiparieae are placed into synonymy under thePodalyrieae and two subtribes are recognized. Bemisia tabaci, that were flown for varying lengths of time (1 min-2.5 h), exhibited behavioral, morphological, and physiological differences. When whiteflies that were engaging in phototactic orientation in a vertical flight chamber were presented with a visual cue simulating their host plant (550-nm narrowband interference filter), 76% landed on this cue within three presentations. Another 18% of the whiteflies displayed an intermittent attraction to the host cue, and 6% displayed a response that, historically, has been considered to be indicative of migration. These individuals failed to respond to the target until they had flown for at least 15 min. These three categories of response were observed in both sexes, in all flight-capable individuals from 1 to 5 days old and in two groups of whiteflies that were exhibiting distinct behaviors prior to our tests (i.e., they were either settled on poinsettia or engaging in phototactic orientation). There was a trend for males that engaged in long-distance flight to have smaller wing dimensions than males that engaged in shorter flights; no trend was evident in female whiteflies. High levels of vitellogenin and vitellin did not inhibit flight activity. In fact, we generally found higher levels of egg proteins in long-distance fliers and in premigratory individuals than in short-duration fliers and settled individuals.  相似文献

Relationships of the eight species of the liverwort genus Radula occurring in Portugal (mainland, the Madeira and Azores archipelagos), including the Macaronesian endemics R. jonesii and R. wichurae, were evaluated based on molecular, phytochemical and morphological–anatomical data. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses were performed with sequences from three plastid DNA markers (trnS GGA-rps4 spacer, rps4 gene, trnL UAA intron), volatile oil compounds, as well as qualitative morphological–anatomical characters. In addition, the molecular data were subjected to maximum likelihood analysis. The eight taxa, R. aquilegia, R. carringtonii, R. complanata, R. holtii, R. jonesii, R. lindenbergiana, R. nudicaulis and R. wichurae, can be clearly distinguished from each other, either by molecular data alone or by combination of characters from all three data sets. Radula aquilegia is monophyletic according to the molecular data, but shows considerable, yet undescribed intraspecific morphological and phytochemical variability. Recognition of R. complanata and R. lindenbergiana as separate species, previously based solely on the paroecious vs. dioecious sexual condition, is moderately supported by the molecular phylogenetic analyses and strongly supported by the phytochemical data. The Radula species, narrowly distributed in Macaronesia and Atlantic Europe, probably have two different origins. For Radula holtii and R. nudicaulis, connections with Radula species from the Neotropics are indicated. The other species, among them the two Macaronesian endemics, are closely related with the R. complanata/R. lindenbergiana complex, which is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere.  相似文献

Cyathocline, a small genus, has been treated as a member of subtribe Grangeinae of tribe Astereae (Asteraceae), but has been neglected in molecular phylogenetic analyses of Astereae. Plastid trnL-F and nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS sequences were used to carry out phylogenetic analyses of Cyathocline (represented by C. purpurea) through maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses. In addition, its karyotype, morphology and micromorphology were also investigated. The results show that in our three phylogenetic trees, C. purpurea is deeply nested within the Blumea clade and/or the Inulinae clade, and is closest to Blumea balsamifera (Inuleae, Inulinae). C. purpurea is similar to Blumea in chromosome size bimodality and to Inulinae in one single large oxalate crystal within each cell of the cypsela epidermis, which, together with molecular evidences, suggests strongly that Cyathocline should be transferred from Astereae to Inuleae subtribe Inulinae. Although C. purpurea has many anomalous features, its most characters still are within a wide range of morphological variations of Blumea. DNA data and the karyotypic character support to merge C. purpurea into Blumea. As a result, the new combination Blumea purpurea (O. Kuntze) W.P. Li was made.  相似文献

Calophyllum brasiliense Camb. (Clusiaceae) is a tree of swampy areas of the coastal “Restinga” in southeastern Brazil (a coastal sand-plain scrub and forest formation). To elucidate possible adaptive strategies that enable this species to occupy areas subjected to seasonal or perennial waterlogging, growth characters such as shoot height, biomass production, leaf expansion, new leaf development, stem diameter, carbon dioxide assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll concentration and fluorescence were studied in controls and plants flooded for up to 150 days. Although flooded plants kept incorporating carbon all through the experiment, their assimilation rate and growth rate were lower than control, non-flooded plants. Injuries such as leaf senescence and abscision were not observed but some flooded plants showed signs of leaf chlorosis. In view of its capacity to maintain carbon assimilation and growth during the treatment, C. brasiliense can be classified as flood-tolerant tree. Flooding induced hypertrophy of lenticels, increased stem diameter and development of adventitious roots. These characteristics of C. brasiliense are most probably responsible for its survival and success in naturally seasonally flooded areas, inhospitable environments for most tree species. Reduction in total chlorophyll concentration was probably the main cause of reduced carbon dioxide assimilation rate. Based on the results we recommend C. brasiliense for rehabilitation of native vegetation in flood-prone areas.  相似文献

Hyparrhenia involucrata Stapf is an annual with diploid, aneuploíd, tetraploid and hexaploid chromosome races on a base of x = 10, whilst M. subplumosa Stapf is known to be tetraploid and perennial. The two species overlap considerably in their vegetative and floral attributes. Whilst the floral characteristics (such as number of awns and sex of imperfect flowers) are fairly constant within H. involucrata , they are quite variable in H. subplumosa : the evolutionary significance of some of these variations is discussed. Some of the observations on size, variability and fertility of pollen grains are interpreted using data from chromosome numbers and meiotic behaviour. Preliminary observations on the hybrids between a diploid race of H. involucrata and H. subplumosa indicate that the genomes of the two species are highly homologous and that perennial habit is a dominant trait controlled by a single gene.  相似文献

Flow cytometry, morphometry and molecular markers [plastid DNA and internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA] were used to determine taxonomic and phylogeographic patterns in Dactylorhiza maculata s.l. from Scandinavia. A total of 238 individuals from 27 populations from throughout all of Scandinavia, including the adjacent Kola Peninsula of Russia, were analyzed. Diploid D. maculata ssp. fuchsii and autotetraploid D. maculata ssp. maculata are morphologically differentiated. Fragment size variants from 10 plastid DNA loci (seven microsatellite loci and three loci with indel variation) were combined to give 43 haplotypes. Three major groups of haplotypes were found. Group I haplotypes were prevalent in the north and the northeast, whereas Group II haplotypes were prevalent in the south and the southwest. Group III was represented by only a single haplotype and appeared to be the result of introgression from D. incarnata s.l. Group I and Group II haplotypes did not correspond with cytologically and morphologically defined D. maculata ssp. fuchsii or D. maculata ssp. maculata. Past introgressive gene flow rather than recent hybridization is envisaged. Intermediate Group I haplotypes between Group II and the rest of Group I were detected in a zone of contact in central Sweden, which may suggest plastid DNA recombination. The six ITS alleles scored showed strong positive correlation with taxonomy. All data sets obtained for ssp. maculata were significantly correlated with geography. Three different autotetraploid lineages are hypothesized. One lineage may represent postglacial immigration from the south and the other two lineages may represent eastern immigration routes. Morphology and ITS data suggested that subarctic populations of ssp. maculata should be recognized as var. kolaënsis.  相似文献

Cells of Candida utilis grown in continuous culture under the influence of rather high concentrations of copper ions have been studied biochemically, morphologically, and cytologically. Although under these conditions a new steady state has been adjusted, the population is much more differentiated than under control conditions. With regard to their size, structure, and viability the cells have been arranged into 4 groups. Generally, the "copper cells" in comparison with the "normal cells" are more voluminous (average: 2.5 times; maximum: 4 times) and of altered structure. The appearance of dense particles ("copper containing particles"), globules ("lipid globules"), vacuoles, and the thickening of the cell wall, as well as the disappearance of the mitochondrial cristae have been shown as characteristic indications for damage in the cell substructure caused by the influence of copper ions. Occasionally abnormal cell shapes can be observed. A permanent influence of copper ions in the concentration used was followed also by striking disturbances of the cell metabolism. The cells take up more carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen, whereas protein synthesis and respiratory activity decrease. Both the synthesis of lipids and polysaccharides and the phosphohydrolase activity increase. A discussion of the experimental data is presented.  相似文献

Polygonatum simizui has been treated as a synonym of P. odoratum s.L , but can be distinguished from P. odoratum by having a terete stem, more leaves on each individual, and relatively small flowers. The results of morphological study showed that there exist some regular and correlated variations in plants of P. odoratum s.L , and some of them can be identified as P. simizui based on the main key characteristics. The results obtained from this study indicate that the morphological differences in plants of P. odoratum s.L are paralleled by some cytological and molecular characteristics. Four NOR loci are observed in the chromosomes of plants that can be identified as P. simizui by in situ hybridization with the 18S-5.8S-26S rDNA probes. The basic number of chromosome of them is n = 9 , which is very different from that of the other plants of P. odoratum s.L The same variation patterns are found in PCR-RFLP analysis of trnK and rpllG genes. As it seems to be unreasonable to include all these plants in a single species, P. simizui should be considered to be a distinct species.  相似文献
