West African dwarf nanny goats and their twin-born kids were tested to determine their behavioural response to separation and their mutual recognition during the first 48 h post-partum. Does and their kids were given scores ranging from 1 to 5, depending on how they performed in the tests. Animals that showed maximum response and recognition ability were given a score of 5, while those with minimum response and recognition ability scored 1. The kids were prevented from sucking 2 h prior to the tests, which were carried out at 18, 24, 36 and 48 h post-partum. Chi-square procedure was used to determine whether age, sex and birthweight of kids as well as hours post-partum and parity of dams had any effect on these post-partum behaviours. Out of 48 twin-born kids tested, 32 (67%) responded actively to separation from dams (i.e. had scores of 3 or more). The age, sex and birthweight of kids did not significantly affect (P>0.05) their response to separation from their dams. The hours post-partum and the parity of does also did not affect their response to separation from their kids. The dam recognition ability of twin-born kids was very poor. Out of a total of 48 kids tested, only 17 (35%) were able to recognize their dams (i.e. had scores of 3 or more). Even at 36 h, only four out of 14 (26%) could recognize their dams. It was only at 48 h that the majority of kids tested (i.e. 75%) successfully identified their dams. At 48 h, the dam recognition ability of kids was significantly better (P<0.05) than that of 18-h-old kids. Sex and birthweight of 24-48-h-old twin-born kids did not significantly affect (P>0.05) their ability to recognize their dams. The majority of does tested (i.e. 20 out of 24) were able to recognize their twin-born kids. The hour post-partum and parity of does did not significantly affect (P>0.05) their kid recognition ability.  相似文献

A new series of antibacterial and antifungal triazine-derived mono- and di-substituted (symmetrical and unsymmetrical) Schiff-bases and their cobalt(II), copper(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) metal complexes have been synthesized and characterized by their elemental analyses, molar conductances, magnetic moments and IR and electronic spectral measurements. IR spectra indicated the ligands to act as tridentate towards divalent metal ions via a trazine-N, the azomethine-N and, indole-NH and deprotonated-O of salicylaldehyde. The magnetic moments and electronic spectral data suggest octahedral geometry for the Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II)complexes and square-pyramid for Cu(II) complexes. NMR spectral data of the ligands and their diamagnetic zinc(II) complexes well-define their proposed structures/geometries. Elemental analyses data of the ligands and metal complexes agree with their proposed structures/geometries. The synthesized ligands, along with their metal complexes were screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtillis, Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi and for antifungal activity against Trichophyton longifusus, Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, Microsporum canis, Fusarium solani and Candida glaberata. The results of these studies show the metal complexes to be more antibacterial/ antifungal against two or more species as compared to the uncomplexed Schiff-base ligands.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the free radical scavenging activities and the chemical structures of tea catechins ((-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and (-)-epicatechin (EC)) and their corresponding epimers ((-)-gallocatechin gallate (GCG), (-)-gallocatechin (GC) and (+)-catechin ((+)-C)). With electron spin resonance (ESR) we investigated their scavenging effects on superoxide anions (O-.2) generated in the irradiated riboflavin system, singlet oxygen(1O2) generated in the photoradiation-hemoporphyrin system, the free radicals generated from 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane)hydrochloride (AAPH) and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. The results showed that the scavenging effects of galloylated catechins (EGCG and GCG) on the four free radicals were stronger than those of nongalloylated catechins (EGC, GC, EC, (+)-C), and the scavenging effects of EGC and GC were stronger than those of EC and (+)-C. Thus, it is suggested that the presence of the gallate group at the 3 position plays the most important role in their free radical-scavenging abilities and an additional insertion of the hydroxyl group at the 5' position in the B ring also contributes to their scavenging activities. Moreover, the corresponding phenoxyl radicals formed after the reaction with O-.2 were trapped by DMPO and the ESR spectra of DMPO/phenoxyl radical adducts were observed (aN=15.6 G and aHbeta=21.5 G). No significant differences were found between the scavenging effects of the catechins and their epimers when their concentrations were high. However, significant differences were observed at relatively low concentrations, and the lower their concentrations, the higher the differences. The scavenging abilities of GCG, GC and (+)-C were stronger than those of their corresponding epimers (EGCG, EGC and EC). The differences between their sterical structures played a more important role in their abilities to scavenge large free radicals, such as the free radicals generated from AAPH and the DPPH radical, than to scavenge small free radicals, such as O-.2 and 1O2, especially in the case with EGCG and GCG with more bulky steric hindrance.  相似文献

Nectins are Ca2+-independent immunoglobulin (Ig)-like cell-cell adhesion molecules, which comprise a family consisting of four members. Nectins have five activities: (1) they show Ca2+-independent cell-cell adhesion activity by homo- and hetero-trans-interactions through their extracellular regions; (2) they bind afadin, an actin filament (F-actin)-binding protein, through their cytoplasmic tails and are connected to the actin cytoskeleton; (3) they induce activation of Cdc42 and Rac small G proteins through their cytoplasmic tails; (4) they bind Par-3, a cell polarity protein, through their cytoplasmic tails; and (5) they heterophilically trans-interact with Necls, nectin-like molecules, through their extracellular regions. Through these activities, nectins regulate a variety of cellular functions, including adhesion, migration, and polarization. Here we describe these activities and functions of nectins.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To see whether adults with high blood cholesterol concentrations (greater than 6.5 mmol/l) detected by case finding return to their doctor, receive appropriate advice, and report changes in their diet and whether adults found not to have high cholesterol concentrations on case finding are discouraged from changing their diet. DESIGN--Follow up study. SETTING--Seven general practices in the lower Hunter region of Australia. PARTICIPANTS--600 Men and women aged 25-65 who had their blood cholesterol concentrations measured three to four months earlier while attending their general practitioner. Analysis conducted on 552 (92%) who returned follow up postal questionnaires. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS--Of the 125 subjects found to have blood cholesterol concentrations greater than 6.5 mmol/l, 102 (82%) returned to their doctor and 83 of these recalled receiving dietary advice. 93 (75%) Subjects with high concentrations reported changing their diet compared with 72 (46%) subjects with concentrations of greater than 5.5-6.5 mmol/l and 44 (17%) subjects with lower concentrations. Overall 333 (61%) of all respondents who answered reported not changing their diet, the most common reason (nearly half the sample; n = 266) being that their cholesterol concentration was "all right." Adults without high cholesterol concentrations who returned to their doctor were also significantly more likely to recall their doctor saying that they did not need to lower their concentrations (less than or equal to 5.5 mmol/l = 61%; greater than 5.5-6.5 mmol/l = 12%; greater than 6.5 mmol/l = 5%) and significantly less likely to recall receiving dietary advice (less than or equal to 5.5 mmol/l = 13%; greater than 5.5-6.5 mmol/l = 60%; greater than 6.5 mmol/l = 82%). CONCLUSIONS--High risk strategies which require everyone to be tested for high cholesterol concentrations may interfere with population strategies designed to reduce everyone''s dietary intake of fat.  相似文献

Although semi-free-ranging Barbary macaque females are able to outrank older females from lower-ranking matrilines (matrilineal rank acquisition), they do not systematically outrank their older sisters, as is known to be the case for semi-free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). We test the hypothesis that differences in the support received by younger sisters against their older sisters and against older lower-ranking females might account for this interspecific difference. Thirty-one sister dyads, members of a group of 109 Barbary macaques living at La Montagne des Singes, France, were observed during 16 months. The results indicate that (1) all females were dominant to their younger sisters, and the latter were never observed to challenge their older sisters; (2) younger sisters received as much kin support against their older sisters as against older lower-ranking females; (3) only very young females received support from their kin against their older sisters; (4) younger sisters received much more support from nonkin females against lower-ranking females than against their older sisters; and (5) Barbary macaque females appear to be supported against their older sisters less frequently than rhesus macaque females are. We conclude that the lack of nonkin support is the main factor accounting for the failure of younger sisters to outrank their older sisters in Barbary macaques. Initially this might result from kin support not being sufficient to induce younger sisters to challenge and to solicit support against their older sisters.  相似文献

Stable-isotope values of a scalloped hammerhead Sphyrna lewini and blacktip shark Carcharhinus limbatus and their respective embryos were analysed. Embryos of both species were enriched in δ(15) N compared to their mothers (0·82 and 0·88‰, respectively), but fractionation of δ(13) C varied. Embryonic S. lewini were enriched (1·00‰) in δ(13) C while C. limbatus were depleted (0·27‰) relative to their mothers.  相似文献

Species distributions are already affected by climate change. Forecasting their long‐term evolution requires models with thoroughly assessed validation. Our aim here is to demonstrate that the sensitivity of such models to climate input characteristics may complicate their validation and introduce uncertainties in their predictions. In this study, we conducted a sensitivity analysis of a process‐based tree distribution model Phenofit to climate input characteristics. This analysis was conducted for two North American trees which differ greatly in their distribution and eight different types of climate input for the historic period which differ in their spatial (local or gridded data) and temporal (daily vs. monthly) resolution as well as their type (locally recorded, extrapolated or simulated by General Circulation Models). We show that the climate data resolution (spatial and temporal) and their type, highly affect the model predictions. The sensitivity analysis also revealed, the importance, for global climate change impact assessment, of (i) the daily variability of temperatures in modeling the biological processes shaping species distribution, (ii) climate data at high latitudes and elevations and (iii) climate data with high spatial resolution.  相似文献

For subsets of colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC) patients, nuclear accumulation of p53 (p53(nac)) and Bcl-2 expression are prognostic indicators. To understand their role in the progression of CRC we evaluated 90 CRCs and their contiguous adenomatous components (CAdCs) for immunohistochemical expression of these markers. In general, p53(nac) and Bcl-2 expression was significantly increased when comparing normal colonic epithelia to CAdCs and CRCs. Thirteen (14%) CAdCs that demonstrated p53(nac) continued to express p53(nac) in their contiguous CRCs. A similar trend was observed in Bcl-2 expression in that the majority of CAdCs expressing Bcl-2 continued to express it in their matching CRCs (39/44). Patients whose CAdCs and their contiguous CRCs demonstrate p53(nac) had shorter median survival (35.9 months) than those patients whose CAdCs and CRCs did not (80.56 months). However, patients whose CAdCs had p53(nac) and lacked Bcl-2 expression had the lowest median survival (15.74 months) when compared with patients whose CAdCs did not demonstrate p53(nac) but had increased expression of Bcl-2 (71.77 months). These findings suggest that in those adenomas that demonstrate p53(nac) but lack Bcl-2 expression, their contiguous CRCs are more likely to be aggressive as they progress.  相似文献

When added to cultures of parathyroid hormone (PTH)- bones, dichloromethylenebisphosphonate (C12MBP) and 3-amino-1-hydroxypropydilene-1,1-bisphosphonate (AHPrBP) inhibit completely and in a parallel manner the development of resorption lacunae, the loss of calcium by the explants and their PTH-induced excretion of lysosomal hydrolases (β-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase). The loss of collagen (hydroxyproline) by the bones is usually less inhibited than their loss of calcium and their heparin-induced excretion of collagenase is unaffected. To interpret these data, it is proposed that these bisphosphonates act more on the activity of osteoclasts, suppressing simultaneously their excretion of lysosomal enzymes and their erosion of mineralized bone matrix, than on that of other cell types (osteoblasts ?) responsible for collagenase production and the removal of uncalcified collagen.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES--To investigate the prevalence of urinary incontinence among people living at home, their responses to it, and its emotional and social effects. DESIGN--Random sample of 4007 adults interviewed in their own homes. SETTING--Random sample of 178 constituency sampling points throughout Great Britain. SUBJECTS--1883 men, 2124 women aged 30 and over. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Responses to questionnaire. RESULTS--6.6% (125) men and 14.0% (297) women had been incontinent of urine at some time--2.8% (52) men and 7.5% (159) women in the previous two months and 61% (124) of these for more than four years. 52% (108) had consulted their general practitioner at the onset of incontinence and a further 31% (65) later. Doctors commonly took a urine sample (163, 54%), referred the patient to a specialist (127, 42%), and prescribed tablets (109, 36%); only 22% (66) carried out an abdominal, rectal, or vaginal examination. Patients were not embarrassed in seeing their doctor and most thought they were treated sympathetically. 60% (265) of all those affected were concerned or worried about their incontinence, and in almost half incontinence limited their daily social activities. CONCLUSION--More people with incontinence seem to be consulting their doctors about it than has been found in previous studies, but the procedures carried out by general practitioners still seem to be suboptimal. Urinary incontinence has a profound effect on the day to day lives of most of those who suffer from it.  相似文献

A new series of six chromone-derived compounds and their Cu(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized by their physical, spectral and analytical data. The ligands and their Cu(II) complexes were screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity against four Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Shigella flexneri) and two Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) bacterial strains by agar-well diffusion method. The ligands were found to exhibit either no or low-to-moderate activities against one or more bacterial species whereas, the Cu(II) complexes exhibited moderate-to-high activity. The ligands which were inactive before complexation became active upon complexation with the Cu(II) metal ion and less active became more active.  相似文献

Physiological studies have established that plants acquire their NO(-3) from the soil through the combined activities of a set of high- and low-affinity NO(-3) transport systems, with the influx of NO(-3) being driven by the H(+) gradient across the plasma membrane. Some of these NO(-3) transport systems are constitutively expressed, while others are NO(-3)-inducible and subject to negative feedback regulation by the products of NO(-3) assimilation. Here we review recent progress in the characterisation of the two families of NO(-3) transporters that have so far been identified in plants, their structure and their regulation, and consider the evidence for their roles in NO(-3) acquisition. We also discuss what is currently known about the genetic basis of NO(-3) induction and feedback repression of the NO(-3) transport and assimilatory pathway in higher plants.  相似文献

We have recently described the structure elucidation of slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A) from lung and of a slow reacting substance (SRS) from basophilic leukaemia cells as 5-hydroxy-6-cysteinylglycinyl-7,9,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid. The stereochemistry of this molecule has now been shown to be 5(S)-hydroxy-6(R)-cysteinylglycinyl-7,9-trans-11,14-cis-eicosatetraenoic acid by comparison of the synthetic and natural products and their derivatives using mass spectrometric and HPLC chromatographic techniques. The synthetic and natural compounds are also indistinguishable by their pharmacological properties, their conversion by soybean lipoxygenase, and their UV spectra.  相似文献

Aphids are important agricultural and forest pests that exhibit complex behaviors elicited by pheromonal signals. The aphid alarm pheromone--of which (E)-β-farnesene is the key (or only) component in most species--plays important roles in mediating interactions among individuals as well as multitrophic interactions among plants, aphids, and aphid natural enemies. Though many important questions remain to be answered, a large body of research has addressed various aspects of the biology, physiology, and ecology of aphid alarm pheromones. Here we review recent advances in our understanding of (a) the identity and composition of aphid alarm signals; (b) their biosynthesis and production; (c) their effects on conspecifics; (d) their role as cues for other insect species; and (e) their potential application for the management of pest organisms.  相似文献

The trade-off between parents feeding themselves and their young is an important life history problem that can be considered in terms of optimal behavioral strategies. Recent studies on birds have tested how parents allocate the food between themselves and their young. Until now the effect of food consumption by parent birds on their food delivery to their young as well as other parental activities has rarely been studied. I have previously shown that parent Palestine sunbirds (Nectarinia osea) will consume nectar and liquidized arthropods from artificial feeders. However, they will only feed their young with whole arthropods. This provided a unique opportunity to experimentally manipulate the food eaten by parents independent of that fed to their offspring. Here, I hypothesized that parents invest in their current young according to the quality of food that they themselves consume. Breeding pairs with two or three nestlings were provided with feeders containing water (control), sucrose solution (0.75 mol) or liquidized mealworms mixed with sucrose solution (0.75 mol). As food quality in feeders increased (from water up to liquidized mealworms mixed with sucrose solution): 1) Parents (especially females) increased their food delivery of whole arthropod prey to their young. 2) Only males increased their nest guarding effort. Nestling food intake and growth rate increased with increasing food quality of parents and decreasing brood size. These results imply that increasing the nutrient content of foods consumed by parent sunbirds allow them to increase the rate at which other foods are delivered to their young and to increase the time spent on other parental care activities.  相似文献

Antioxidant activity of kappa-carrageenan oligosaccharides (OM) and their chemical modification derivatives was investigated employing various established in vitro systems, such as reducing power, iron ion chelation, and total antioxidant activity using beta-carotene-linoleic acid system. The oversulfated (SD), lowly (LAD), and highly acetylated derivatives (HAD) in reducing power assay, the phosphorylated derivative (PD) in metal chelating assay, and oversulfated and phosphorylated derivatives in total antioxidant activity assay exhibited antioxidant activity higher than that of carrageenan oligosaccharides. The results indicated that the chemical modification of carrageenan oligosaccharides can enhance their antioxidant activity in vitro. The protective effects of the carrageenan oligosaccharides and their chemically modified derivatives against H(2)O(2) and UVA (long-wave ultraviolet radiation) induced oxidative damage on rat thymic lymphocyte were investigated by measuring cell viability via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT). Thymic lymphocyte exposure to H(2)O(2) and UVA, a marked reduction in cell survival was observed, which was significantly prevented by carrageenan oligosaccharides and their derivatives (preincubated for 2h) at 66.7-2000 microg/mL. But both the carrageenan oligosaccharides and their different derivatives showed the similar protective effects on intracellular level. Taken together, these results suggest that carrageenan oligosaccharides and their derivatives show relevant antioxidant activity both in vitro and in a cell system.  相似文献
