Increasing global population and the consequent increase in demand for food are not a new story. Agroindustrial activities such as livestock help meet this demand. Aquaculture arose decades ago and revolutionized the agroindustrial activity as a significant food generator. However, like livestock, aquaculture is based on finite resources and has been accused of being unsustainable. Abandoning aquaculture is not an option considering the food, foreign exchange, and employment it generates, and therefore must be reinvented. Among the many alternatives suggested to make aquaculture more sustainable, microorganisms have been highlighted as a direct food source for cultured fish and crustaceans, a strategy that promises to revolutionize aquaculture by eliminating waste. Considering waste, as part of a cycle, it can increase stock densities and reduce emissions of contaminants and operational costs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: In the tradition of Dr Arom, who had many interests in his clinical and research career, I will touch on three things that will impact the practice of clinical cardiac surgery over the next several years: use of bilateral internal mammary arteries, use of external mesh support to improve saphenous vein graft patency, and anticoagulation of mechanical heart valves. The rapid pace of scientific breakthroughs that are flowing from genetic research seem to be matched only by the intensifying perception that some form of social control is required. As exemplified by the call to 'regulatory action' that was elicited by the prospect of human cloning, increased formal government oversight of human genetic research appears to be inevitable. Although there are certainly many valid social and ethical concerns worthy of a regulatory response, legislating genetic policy will not be easy.  相似文献

The emergence of pathogenic bacteria resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents is turning into a major crisis in human and veterinary medicine. This necessitates a serious re-evaluation of our approaches toward antibacterial drug discovery and use. According to Pigliucci and Kaplan, there is a revolution underway in how we understand fitness landscapes. Recent models suggest that a perennial problem in these landscapes—how to get from one peak across a fitness valley to another peak—is, in fact, non-existent. In this paper I assess the structure and the extent of Pigliucci and Kaplan’s proposed revolution and argue for two points. First, I provide an alternative interpretation of what underwrites this revolution, motivated by some recent work on model-based science. Second, I show that the implications of this revolution need to carefully assessed depending on question being asked, for peak-shifting is not central to all evolutionary questions that fitness landscapes have been used to explore.

A key goal of biology is to understand phenotypic characteristics, such as health, disease and evolutionary fitness. Phenotypic variation is produced through a complex web of interactions between genotype and environment, and such a 'genotype-phenotype' map is inaccessible without the detailed phenotypic data that allow these interactions to be studied. Despite this need, our ability to characterize phenomes - the full set of phenotypes of an individual - lags behind our ability to characterize genomes. Phenomics should be recognized and pursued as an independent discipline to enable the development and adoption of high-throughput and high-dimensional phenotyping.  相似文献

Immunologists need to establish a vibrant dialogue with young people. This is not only important for the continuation and progress of biomedical research, but it can also contribute to the fight against diseases such as HIV/AIDS and can help young people to make informed decisions about lifestyle, medical treatment and ethical issues. Good communication skills are crucial to any scientific career, and the lessons learned from talking with non-scientists can also be useful when writing scientific papers and grants. We are now in the midst of a revolution in morphometric methodology. The new approaches are more effective in capturing information about the shape of an organism and result in more powerful statistical procedures for testing for differences in s shape. They are also more effective in enabling a researcher to visualize differences in shape and in suggesting simple traditional measurements that could be used in future studies.
