For outdoor photobiological hydrogen production, the effective control of temperature in photobioreactors is a challenge. In this work, an internal cooling system for outdoor tubular photobioreactors was designed, built, and tested. The temperatures in the reactors with bacteria were consistently higher than those without bacteria, and were also strongly influenced by solar irradiation and ambient air temperature. The cooling protocol applied successfully kept the reactor temperatures below the threshold limit (38 °C) required for the bioprocess and provided a uniform distribution of temperature along the reactor tube length. The biomass growth and hydrogen production were similar in the reactors cooled co-currently and counter-currently. The biomass growth rate was 0.1 l/h, the maximum hydrogen production rate was 1.28 mol/m3/h, and the overall hydrogen yield obtained was 20 %. The change in the biomass was fitted using the logistic model while cumulative hydrogen production was fitted using the modified Gompertz equation.  相似文献

BackgroundThe wearable cardioverter-defibrillator (WCD) has been approved for patients with poor left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) who are at risk of sudden arrhythmic death for a limited period but are not candidates for a definitive implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). The present study sought to retrospectively analyse our single-centre experience. Methods and resultsAll consecutive WCDs applied between April 2017 and September 2018 in our centre were enrolled. An exercise test was performed in all patients in order to evaluate the absence of false detection of ventricular arrhythmias by the device. A total of 16 patients (57.7 ± 14.8 years old; 75% males) were taken into consideration for the analysis. Mean LVEF was 32 ± 11% at diagnosis and 42 ± 10% at last follow-up (mean, 3.1 ± 1.7 months; median, 3 months). At the end of the “wearing period” 11/16 patients (69%) did not have ICD implant indications and only 5 (31%) underwent ICD implantation. Neither appropriate nor appropriate shocks occurred during the follow up.ConclusionsThe WCD represents a useful tool to bridge a temporarily increased risk for sudden cardiac death. The proportion of patients with an improvement of LVEF> 35% beyond the WCD-application period was considerable.  相似文献

BackgroundWearable cardioverter-defibrillators (WCDs) are currently used in patients at temporarily heightened risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD) who are temporarily unable to receive an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). WCD can safely record and terminate life-threatening arrhythmias through a non-invasive electrode-based system. The current clinical indications for WCD use are varied and keep evolving as experience with this technology increases.MethodsWe reviewed and explored the data behind indications for WCD use and discuss its usefulness in congenital heart disease (CHD) patients.ResultsWe considered 8 consecutive patients (mean age 35.25 years, range 18–51 years, average duration of WCD use 4 months, range 3–6 months) with complex CHD, in which a WCD was used between June 2018 and January 2022. No sustained ventricular arrhythmias requiring shocks were recorded in the observation period. No inappropriate shocks were recorded. All the patients showed a good compliance and a very high mean wear time per day (21.2 ± 1 h a day). Four patients implanted a permanent device (3 CRT-D, 1 ICD), three underwent cardiac surgery at the end of the WCD period and one is still on the waiting list for the operation.ConclusionsLarger trial could confirm the possible conceivable benefit from an extended use of the WCD in certain populations with complex CHD as in our case series, especially in patients with life-treating ventricular arrhythmias waiting for surgery for residual cardiac defects or in the early phases following the surgical/hemodynamic interventions, patients with tachycardiomyopathy expected to improve after the arrhythmias are removed and patients awaiting implantation of an ICD at high risk due to active infection.  相似文献

Golden spiny mice (Acomys russatus) living in the Judean desert are exposed to extended periods of food and water shortage. We investigated their thermal and metabolic response to three weeks of 50 % food reduction at ambient temperatures of 23, 27, 32 and 35 °C by long term records of metabolic rate and body temperature in the laboratory. At all ambient temperatures, A. russatus responded to starvation by a reduction of daily energy expenditure. At 32 and 35 °C, this metabolic adjustment fully compensated the reduced food availability and they maintained their energy balance at a slightly reduced body mass. At lower ambient temperatures, they could not fully compensate for the reduced food availability and kept a negative energy balance. The reduction of daily energy expenditure was largely achieved by the occurrence of daily torpor. Torpor even occurred at high ambient temperatures of 32 and 35 °C during which metabolic depression was not associated with a marked decrease of body temperature. The results show that the occurrence of daily torpor is not necessarily linked to cold exposure and the development of a pronounced hypothermia, but may even occur as depression of metabolic rate in a hot environment.  相似文献

Female CD-1 mice were injected with an LD50 dose of Streptococcus pneumoniae and then exposed to 2.45 GHz (CW) microwave radiation at an incident power density of 10 mW/cm2 (SAR = 6.8 W/kg), 4 h/d for 5 d at ambient temperatures of 19 °C, 22 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C, 34 °C, 37 °C and 40 °C. Four groups of 25 animals were exposed at each temperature with an equal number of animals concurrently sham-exposed. Survival was observed for a 10-d period after infection. Survival of the sham-exposed animals increased as ambient temperature increased from 19 °C–34 °C. At ambient temperatures at or above 37 °C the heat induced in the body exceeded the thermoregulatory capacity of the animals and deaths from hyperthermia occurred. Survival of the microwave-exposed animals was significantly greater than the shams (~20%) at each ambient temperature below 34 °C. Based on an analysis of the data it appears that the hyperthermia induced by microwave exposure may be more effective in increasing survival in infected mice than hyperthermia produced by conventional methods (ie, high ambient temperature). Microwave radiation may be beneficial to infected animals at low and moderate ambient temperatures, but it is detrimental when combined with high ambient temperatures.  相似文献

Background

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are widely used for the prevention of sudden cardiac death. At present, both clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness of ICD therapy in primary prevention patients are topics of discussion, as only a minority of these patients will eventually receive appropriate ICD therapy.

Methods/design

The DO-IT Registry is a nationwide prospective cohort with a target enrolment of 1,500 primary prevention ICD patients with reduced left ventricular function in a setting of structural heart disease. The primary outcome measures are death and appropriate ICD therapy for ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Secondary outcome measures are inappropriate ICD therapy, death of any cause, hospitalisation for ICD related complications and for cardiovascular reasons. As of December 2016, data on demographic, clinical, and ICD characteristics of 1,468 patients have been collected. Follow-up will continue up to 24 months after inclusion of the last patient. During follow-up, clinical and ICD data are collected based on the normal follow-up of these patients, assuming ICD interrogations take place every six months and clinical follow-up is once a year. At baseline, the mean age was 66 (standard deviation [SD] 10) years and 27% were women.

Conclusion

The DO-IT Registry represents a real-world nationwide cohort of patients receiving ICDs for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death with reduced left ventricular function in a setting of structural heart disease. The registry investigates the efficacy of the current practice and aims to develop prediction rules to identify subgroups who will not (sufficiently) benefit from ICD implantation and to provide results regarding costs and budget impact of targeted supply of primary preventions ICDs.

To clarify the influence of internal and skin temperature on the active cutaneous vasodilation during exercise, the body temperature thresholds for the onset of active vasodilation during light or moderate exercise under different ambient temperature conditions were compared. Seven male subjects performed 30 min of a cycling exercise at 20 % or 50 % of peak oxygen uptake in a room maintained at 20, 24, or 28 °C. Esophageal (Tes) and mean skin temperature (Tsk) as measured by a thermocouple, deep thigh temperature (Tdt) by the zero-heat-flow (ZHF) method, and forearm skin blood flow by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) were monitored. The mean arterial pressure (MAP) was also monitored non-invasively, and the cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) was calculated as the LDF/MAP. Throughout the experiment, the Tsk at ambient temperatures of 20, 24, and 28 °C were approximately 30, 32, and 34 °C, respectively, for both 20 % and 50 % exercise. During 50 % exercise, the Tes or Tdt thresholds for the onset of the increase in CVC were observed to be similar among the 20, 24, and 28 °C ambient conditions. During 20 % exercise, the increase in Tes and Tdt was significantly lower than those found at 50 %, and the onset of the increase in CVC was only observed at 28 °C. These results suggest that the onset of active vasodilation was affected more strongly by the internal or exercising tissue temperatures than by the skin temperatures during exercise performed at a moderate load in comparison to a light load under Tsk variations ranging from 30 °C to 34 °C. Therefore, the modification by skin temperature of the central control on cutaneous vasomotor tone during exercise may differ between different exercise loads.  相似文献

We recorded the spontaneous activity of T1 and T2 filiform sensilla from October to May in Pyrrhocoris apterus acclimatized to outdoor conditions. The aim of the study was to determine how prolonged exposure to cold affects two closely related mechanosensitive sensilla. We recorded the activity at seven temperatures from 5 to 35 °C. In both sensilla types the activity level was reduced during winter, which correlated to changes in acclimatization temperature (r = 0.7), the reduction was greater at high recording temperatures, and the effects of exposure to cold were reversed by transferring the animals indoors. However, T1 activity always increased monotonically, if the recording temperature was increased from 5 to 35 °C, whereas T2 activity in cold-acclimatized animals increased to temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and then started decreasing. As a result, the temperature sensitivity of the activity was reduced more profoundly in T2 sensilla (in T2 Q 10 was reduced from 3.5 in October to 1.4 in January, whereas in T1 it was reduced from 2.5 to 2.2). In conclusion, we have shown that prolonged exposure to cold does affect filiform sensilla; however, the effect is significantly different in the two sensilla types.  相似文献

Avian sleep is sensitive to thermal challenges. Brooding king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) defending a territory are exposed to wide daily fluctuations in ambient temperature and wind conditions. We studied the daytime behavioural time budget of 89 groups of territorial adults brooding a 1- to 5-week-old chick on Crozet Island during summer 1998. Scans were performed every 10 min and each bird was categorized as either active, resting or sleeping. Three ranges of ambient temperatures (T1=5-9°C, T2=10-13°C, T3=14-19°C) and wind conditions (calm-light, moderate, strong) were distinguished. Wind conditions did not affect the behavioural time budget of king penguins during summer. Resting, which represented about half of the daytime behavioural time budget, increased by 17% when ambient temperature increased from T1 to T3, mostly at the expense of active behaviours. The percentage of time spent sleeping was low, but was reduced by 66% when ambient temperature increased over 10°C. Thus, behavioural sleep was mainly observed in a range of temperatures within which resting metabolic rate of adult king penguins is minimal, i.e. between -1 and 11°C. It is also interesting to note that the range of ambient temperatures in which sleeping was high coincides with the most common microclimatology prevailing at the colony during summer, i.e. ambient temperatures between 5 and 10°C.  相似文献

Winter acclimatization in birds is a complex of several strategies based on metabolic adjustment accompanied by long-term management of resources such as fattening. However, wintering birds often maintain fat reserves below their physiological capacity, suggesting a cost involved with excessive levels of reserves. We studied body reserves of roosting great tits in relation to their dominance status under two contrasting temperature regimes to see whether individuals are capable of optimizing their survival strategies under extreme environmental conditions. We predicted less pronounced loss of body mass and body condition and lower rates of overnight mortality in dominant great tits at both mild and extremely low ambient temperatures, when ambient temperature dropped down to ?43 °C. The results showed that dominant great tits consistently maintained lower reserve levels than subordinates regardless of ambient temperature. However, dominants responded to the rising risk of starvation under low temperatures by increasing their body reserves, whereas subdominant birds decreased reserve levels in harsh conditions. Yet, their losses of body mass and body reserves were always lower than in subordinate birds. None of the dominant great tits were found dead, while five young females and one adult female were found dead in nest boxes during cold spells when ambient temperatures dropped down to ?43 °C. The dead great tits lost up to 23.83 % of their evening body mass during cold nights while surviving individuals lost on average 12.78 % of their evening body mass. Our results show that fattening strategies of great tits reflect an adaptive role of winter fattening which is sensitive to changes in ambient temperatures and differs among individuals of different social ranks.  相似文献

We examined the association between prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and daily mean ambient temperature on the day of the test in healthy men who had three annual checkups. We investigated 9,694 men who visited a hospital for routine health checkups in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Although the means and medians of ambient temperature for the three years were similar, the mode in 2008 (15.8 °C) was very different from those in 2007 and 2009 (22.4 °C and 23.2 °C). After controlling for age, body mass index, and hematocrit, a multiple regression analysis revealed a U-shaped relationship between ambient temperature and PSA in 2007 and 2009 (P?<?0.001 and P?=?0.004, respectively), but not in 2008 (P?=?0.779). In 2007, PSA was 13.5 % higher at 5 °C and 10.0 % higher at 30 °C than that at 18.4 °C (nadir). In 2009, PSA was 7.3 % higher at 5 °C and 6.8 % at 30 °C compared with the level at 17.7 °C (nadir). In logistic regression analysis, a U-shaped relationship was found for the prevalence of a higher PSA (> 2.5 ng/mL) by ambient temperature, with the lowest likelihood of having a high PSA at 17.8 °C in 2007 (P?=?0.038) and 15.5 °C in 2009 (P?=?0.033). When tested at 30 °C, there was a 57 % excess risk of having a high PSA in 2007 and a 61 % higher risk in 2009 compared with those at each nadir temperature. We found a U-shaped relationship between PSA and ambient temperature with the lowest level of PSA at 15–20 °C.  相似文献

Ten-week-old male Wistar rats (systolic blood pressure, 106–116 mmHg; body weight, 300–320 g) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (systolic blood pressure, 160–176 mmHg; body weight, 210.9–244.9 g) were used as healthy and hypertensive subjects to determine the effects of varying degrees of cold-air exposure in a climate chamber box. The three cold-air ranks were cold air I [minimum temperature (TMIN) 6.4 °C, ↓?T48 8.6 °C], cold air II (TMIN 3.8 °C, ↓?T48 11.2 °C), and cold air III (TMIN ?0.3 °C, ↓?T48 15.3 °C), as established from the cold-air data of Zhangye City, China. Each cold-air rank consisted of a temperature drop and a temperature increase with the same initial and terminal temperatures (15 °C). After cold-air exposure, the risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) such as systolic blood pressure, whole blood viscosity (10/s and 150/s), plasma fibrinogen, and blood lipids of the rats were determined. The results indicated that the CVD risk factors of the healthy and hypertensive rats increased significantly with cold-air exposure intensities. The increase in systolic blood pressure was greater during temperature drops, whereas the increases in whole blood viscosity and plasma fibrinogen were greater after cold-air exposure. The effects of cold-air exposure on the CVD risk factors of healthy rats, particularly the systolic blood pressure, whole blood viscosity (150/s), and LDL/HDL, were greater than those in hypertensive rats. In conclusion, CVD risk may increase with cold-air ranks. Blood pressure-induced CVD risk may be greater during cold-air temperature drop, whereas atherosclerosis-induced CVD risk may be greater after cold-air exposure. The effect of cold air on the CVD risk factors in healthy subjects may be more significant than those in hypertensive subjects.  相似文献

Recycling of enzymes has a potential interest during cellulosic bioethanol production as purchasing enzymes is one of the largest expenses in the process. By recycling enzymes after distillation, loss of sugars and ethanol are avoided, but depending on the distillation temperature, there is a potential risk of enzyme degradation. Studies of the rate of enzyme denaturation based on estimation of the denaturation constant K D was performed using a novel distillation setup allowing stripping of ethanol at 50–65 °C. Experiments were performed in a pilot-scale stripper, where the effect of temperature (55–65 °C) and exposure to gas–liquid and liquid–heat transmission interfaces were tested on a mesophilic and thermostable enzyme mixture in fiber beer and buffer. Lab-scale tests were included in addition to the pilot-scale experiments to study the effect of shear, ethanol concentration, and PEG on enzyme stability. When increasing the temperature (up to 65 °C) or ethanol content (up to 7.5 % w/v), the denaturation rate of the enzymes increased. Enzyme denaturation occurred slower when the experiments were performed in fiber beer compared to buffer only, which could be due to PEG or other stabilizing substances in fiber beer. However, at extreme conditions with high temperature (65 °C) and ethanol content (7.5 % w/v), PEG had no enzyme stabilizing effect. The novel distillation setup proved to be useful for maintaining enzyme activity during ethanol extraction.  相似文献

Although the impact of temperature on mortality is well documented, relatively fewer studies have evaluated the associations of temperature with morbidity outcomes such as hospital admissions, and most studies were conducted in North America or Europe. We evaluated weather and hospital admissions including specific causes (allergic disease, asthma, selected respiratory disease, and cardiovascular disease) in eight major cities in Korea from 2003 to 2008. We also explored potential effect modification by individual characteristics such as sex and age. We used hierarchical modeling to first estimate city-specific associations between heat, cold, or heat waves and hospitalizations, and then estimated overall effects. Stratified analyses were performed by cause of hospitalization, sex, and age (0–14, 15–64, 65–74, and ≥75 years). Cardiovascular hospitalizations were significantly associated with high temperature, whereas hospitalizations for allergic disease, asthma, and selected respiratory disease were significantly associated with low temperature. The overall heat effect for cardiovascular hospitalization was a 4.5 % (95 % confidence interval 0.7, 8.5 %) increase in risk comparing hospitalizations at 25 to 15 °C. For cold effect, the overall increase in risk of hospitalizations comparing 2 with 15 °C was 50.5 (13.7, 99.2 %), 43.6 (8.9, 89.5 %), and 53.6 % (9.8, 114.9 %) for allergic disease, asthma, and selected respiratory disease, respectively. We did not find statistically significant effects of heat waves compared with nonheat wave days. Our results suggest susceptible populations such as women and younger persons. Our findings provide suggestive evidence that both high and low ambient temperatures are associated with the risk of hospital admissions, particularly in women or younger person, in Korea.  相似文献

The oomycete Leptolegnia chapmanii is among the most promising entomopathogens for biological control of Aedes aegypti. This mosquito vector breeds in small water collections, where this aquatic watermold pathogen can face short-term scenarios of challenging high or low temperatures during changing ambient conditions, but it is yet not well understood how extreme temperatures might affect the virulence and recycling capacities of this pathogen. We tested the effect of short-term exposure of encysted L. chapmanii zoospores (cysts) on A. aegypti larvae killed after infection by this pathogen to stressful low or high temperatures on virulence and production of cysts and oogonia, respectively. Cysts were exposed to temperature regimes between ?12 °C and 40 °C for 4, 6 or 8 h, and then their infectivity was tested against third instar larvae (L3) at 25 °C; in addition, production of cysts and oogonia on L3 killed by infection exposed to the same temperature regimes as well as their larvicidal activity were monitored. Virulence of cysts to larvae and the degree of zoosporogenesis on dead larvae under laboratory conditions were highest at 25 °C but were hampered or even blocked after 4 up to 8 h exposure of cysts or dead larvae at both the highest (35 °C and 40 °C) and the lowest (?12 °C) temperatures followed by subsequent incubation at 25 °C. The virulence of cysts was less affected by accelerated than by slow thawing from the frozen state. The production of oogonia on dead larvae was stimulated by short-term exposure to freezing temperatures (?12 °C and 0 °C) or cool temperatures (5 °C and 10 °C) but was not detected at higher temperatures (25 °C–40 °C). These findings emphasize the susceptibility of L. chapmanii to short-term temperature stresses and underscore its interest as an agent for biocontrol of mosquitoes in the tropics and subtropics, especially A. aegypti, that breed preferentially in small volumes of water that are generally protected from direct sunlight.  相似文献

In 1980, Dr. Michel Mirowski and his team inserted the first implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) in a patient. Initially, ICD therapy was not widely accepted, and many physicians actually considered this therapy unethical. Large secondary and primary prevention trials, demonstrating a beneficial effect of ICD therapy in selected patients not only on arrhythmic death but also on all-cause mortality, stimulated a rapid growth in the number of implants and increased patient’s and physician’s acceptance. Improvements in size and weight, arrhythmia discrimination capabilities, battery technology, shock waveform and output, monitoring capabilities and defibrillator electrode technology eventually resulted in the current large number of yearly implants. Today, almost 40 years after the conception of the ICD and 25 years after the first human implant, ICD therapy is the treatment of choice for patients at risk for life-threatening arrhythmias either as secondary or primary prevention. Furthermore, with the more recent addition of resynchronisation therapy to standard ICD therapy, it became possible to treat selected patients with advanced symptoms of heart failure and to lower the risk of sudden death.  相似文献

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-protein coding RNA molecules of approximately 21 nucleotides in length capable of modulating gene expression in animals and plants. The role of miRNA based gene regulation has been proved in several pathways including in plant growth, development and stress response. In this study miR171 and miR397a were tested for their expression pattern under different heat shock regimes in shoot and root tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana using Locked Nucleic Acid (LNA) mediated in situ hybridization. With an increase in temperature across 35 °C, 40 °C and 45 °C there was a corresponding increased up-regulation of miR171 in leaf tissues compared to ambient temperature. Similarly, an unambiguous elevated expression of miR171 within increase in duration of exposure at each temperature regime across 1 h, 2 h and 3 h was noticed in comparison to ambient control leaf tissue. On the other hand, miR397a, which expressed at ambient control conditions, got down-regulated both with increase in heat and exposure regime in leaf tissues. Both miRNAs expressed in control ambient root tissues. Maintaining the root zone temperature at ambient conditions, upon imposing heat shock regime to shoot system, miR171 recorded corresponding increased up-regulation as indicated by the intensity of in situ hybridization, while miR397a got down-regulated. Given the differential homogeneity in expression pattern of both miRNA in leaf and root tissues experiencing heat shock regimes, possibilities of movement of heat shock induced signals to root tissues seem to be obvious.  相似文献

Methane emissions from rice grown within Temperature Gradient Greenhouse Tunnels under doubled CO2 concentrations were 10–45 times less than emissions from control plants grown under ambient CO2. For two cultivars of rice (cvs. Lemont and IR-72), methane emissions increased with a temperature increase of 2°, from outdoor ambient temperatures to the first cell of the ambient CO2 tunnel (ambient temperature + 2 °C). Within both tunnels and for both cultivars methane emissions decreased with further temperature increases (from 2° to 5 °C above ambient). Carbon dioxide enrichment stimulated both above- and below-ground production. Our original hypothesis was that increased CO2 would stimulate plant productivity and therefore stimulate methane emission, since direct linkages between these parameters have been observed. We hypothesize that CO2 enrichment led to the attenuation of methane production due to increased delivery of oxygen to the rhizosphere because of increased root biomass and porosity. The increased root biomass due to elevated CO2 may have more effectively aerated the soil, suppressing methane production. However, this study may be unique because the low organic content (< 1%) of the sandy soils in which the rice was grown created very little oxygen demand.  相似文献

Purpose

With the increased use of genetic testing for arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C), this disease is being increasingly recognised among elderly patients. However, elderly ARVD/C patients were underrepresented in prior cohorts. We aimed to describe the phenotypical characteristics and outcomes among ARVD/C patients surviving ≥50 years.

Methods

We assessed detailed phenotypical data of 29 patients who (1) presented at ≥50 years of age; and (2) fulfilled 2010 Task Force Criteria (TFC) for ARVD/C by last follow-up. Primary outcome was the occurrence of a major ventricular arrhythmia (sudden cardiac death, resuscitated sudden cardiac arrest or sustained ventricular tachycardia).

Results

The majority (55?%) of elderly ARVD/C subjects were male, with a mean age of 59.0 ± 5.8 years at presentation. Study participants fulfilled a median of six (IQR 5–8) TFC criteria by last follow-up, of which arrhythmia criteria were most frequent (97?%), followed by structural criteria (83?%), depolarisation criteria (72?%) and repolarisation criteria (69?%). By last follow-up, 15 (52?%) patients had experienced major ventricular arrhythmias. Most patients (n = 12) presented with this arrhythmia, while three experienced the event during 5.4 ± 3.2 years of follow-up. Compared with patients without an arrhythmic event, patients with major arrhythmias were more likely to be proband (p < 0.001) and male (p = 0.042). Likewise, survival free from sustained ventricular arrhythmia was lower among probands and males.

Conclusion

Phenotypic characteristics of elderly ARVD/C patients are characterised by depolarisation abnormalities and structural cardiac changes. Ventricular arrhythmias in this elderly cohort are associated with male gender and proband status.

Acute and long-term temperature changes caused by global warming could lead to severe ecological and physiological consequences for aquatic organisms. This might be reflected in a higher mortality rate or a reduced hatching success but elevated temperatures might also lead to accelerated growth and egg development due to higher metabolic rates. Thermal conditions could also act on male gamete function that is known to be under strong sexual selection especially in mating systems where sperm competition frequently occurs. The three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is an externally fertilizing fish species. Males are sperm limited over the course of one breeding season and the risk of sperm competition is known to be high. To study the impact of ecologically relevant water temperatures in relation to different sperm numbers on reproductive performance standardized in vitro fertilization experiments were conducted, using two different immediate temperature changes (15 and 25 °C) as all test individuals were held under the same conditions prior to the experiments. The results revealed that fertilization success differed significantly when using different sperm numbers in different water temperatures. At higher temperatures a lower number of sperm was sufficient to fertilize 50 % of the eggs. However, with increasing sperm number fertilization success saturated at 75 % in the 25 °C treatment but at about 90 % in the 15 °C treatment. A further experiment dealt with sperm swimming ability at different temperatures (5, 15 and 25 °C), showing that both sperm velocity and linearity significantly increased whereas the percentage of motile sperm decreased at higher temperatures, suggesting that under these conditions sperm might reach an unfertilized egg more rapidly but live shorter. The observed results stress the role of current and future levels of naturally occurring ambient water temperatures as an important environmental factor influencing fitness related traits.  相似文献
