This report describes the effect of temperature on the mechanical viscoelastic properties such as: storage modulus (E′), loss modulus (E″), and loss tangent (tan δ) of the collagen sponges modified with hyaluronic acid (HA). In order to detect collagen–HA copolymer denaturation and to assess its thermal stability, the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) supplemented by thermogravimetric (TG) measurements was used. The denaturation temperature (Td) of unmodified collagen samples increased from 69 to 86 °C for cross-linked samples, respectively. These temperature dependencies show remarkable changes in E′ and E″ at selected temperature up to 226 °C for all samples due to the release of loosely and strongly bound water. The influence of HA on the viscoelastic behavior of collagen is manifested by a shift of the tan δ peak associated with the process of decomposition towards higher temperatures resulting in a higher thermo-stability of the modified scaffolds.  相似文献

Pre-cooling improves heat tolerance and time to exhaustion in the heat. We tested the possibility that reduced tissue temperatures may explain this phenomenon, using three whole-body treatments: pre-cooling, thermoneutral (control) and pre-heating. Pre-cooling reduced muscle temperature (Tm) by 6.3 °C while pre-heating increased Tm 3.4 °C, relative to control. Despite this offset, Tm climbed towards a common asymptote, with pre-cooling offering no thermal protection beyond 40 min. Following pre-cooling, exercising oesophageal temperature (Tes) initially increased at 0.09 °C min−1, being significantly faster than control (0.05 °C min−1) and pre-heated conditions (0.03 °C min−1). Pre-cooling lowered the sweat threshold and also resulted in a reduced cardiac frequency across the exercise-heat exposure. Our observations do not support the hypothesis that pre-cooling reduces Tm at the end of an exercise-heat exposure, thereby delaying the development of fatigue.  相似文献

Forty-eight individually fed purebred Angus steers (7±1.1 mo of age, 218±9.1 kg BW) were used to determine the effects of copper (Cu) source and concentration on Cu status and immune function. Steers were stratified by weight and initial liver Cu concentration and randomly assigned to one of five treatments. Treatments were: (1) control (no supplemental Cu), (2) 10 mg Cu/kg dry matter (DM) from Cu sulfate (CuSO4), (3) 10 mg Cu/kg DM from a Cu-amino acid complex (Availa Cu; Zinpro Corporation, Eden Prairie, MN, USA), (4) 20 mg Cu/kg DM from CuSO4, and (5) 20 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu. Steers were housed in individual pens and fed an alfalfa-corn based growing diet (7.1 mg Cu/kg DM) for 56 d then gradually switched to a high concentrate diet (6.1 mg Cu/kg DM) for 144 d. On d 56 of the growing phase and d 112 of the finishing phase, liver Cu concentrations were higher (P<0.01) in Cu supplemented steers. Steers receiving 20 mg Cu/kg DM had higher (P<0.01) liver Cu concentrations than steers receiving 10 mg Cu/kg DM. On d 112 of the finishing phase, steers receiving 20 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu had higher (P<0.01) liver Cu concentrations than steers supplemented 20 mg Cu/kg DM from CuSO4. Cell mediated immune response to phytohemagglutinin was higher (P<0.01) in steers supplemented with 20 mg Cu/kg DM compared to steers supplemented with 10 mg Cu/kg DM. Total immunoglobulin (Ig) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations specific to pig red blood cells (PRBC) were higher (P<0.01) in steers supplemented with 10 mg Cu/kg DM from CuSO4 than steers supplemented with 10 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu. During the finishing phase, IgG concentrations specific to PRBC were higher (P<0.03) and antibody titers specific to ovalbumin (OVA) were lower (P<0.05) in control steers relative to Cu supplemented steers. Steers receiving 20 mg Cu/kg DM had higher (P<0.02) antibody titers specific to OVA than steers receiving 10 mg Cu/kg DM. Steers receiving 20 mg Cu/kg DM from Availa Cu had higher (P<0.01) antibody titers specific to OVA than steers supplemented with 20 mg Cu/kg DM from CuSO4. Results indicate that the immune response to an antigen varies depending on the type of antigen administered as well as the concentration and source of Cu supplemented.  相似文献

Heat shock protein 72 (HSP72) is the most inducible HSP, but is not always increased in lymphocytes following exercise. This field study examined whether lymphocyte HSP72 was increased in hyperthermic (Trec>39.0 °C) male athletes following a 14 km competitive race in cool conditions (ambient temperature 11.2 °C). A comparison was also made between control runners (n=7) and those treated for exertional heat illness (n=9). Lymphocyte HSP72 was not increased in control runners immediately post- compared with pre-race, and there was no difference between both groups of runners. A second study of the race (ambient temperature 14.6 °C) found that lymphocyte HSP72 in control (n=7) and treated (n=9) athletes was higher 2 days post- compared with immediately post-race (p<0.01) and these increases were correlated with post-exercise Trec (p<0.05).  相似文献

A ‘double-container model’ was used for core temperature (Tc) measurement by microwave emission radiometry (MR) of warm fluid inside a tube, placed in a container with a cooler fluid. The intensity of microwaves emitted from the warmer fluid inside the tube were measured using a MR metering device, consisting of an antenna linked to a low-noise radio frequency amplifier (bandwidth 500 MHz, centered at 4.0 GHz). Based on the MR measurements, a Tc prediction model was developed for measuring the temperature of fluid inside a tube, achieving a sensitivity of ±0.5 °C at environmental temperature of 33–37 °C.  相似文献

1. Incubated chicken eggs (D14 to D21) were placed separately in transparent acrylic glass chambers which were immersed in a 37.5°C water bath for 3 h. The chambers were then moved for 3 h to another water bath controlled at 34.5°C. Oxygen consumption and temperature of the allantoic fluid (Taf) were measured at 5-min intervals for the whole experiment using an oxygen analyzer and CrNi–Ni-thermocouples, respectively. Heat production (HP) was calculated, using an assumed RQ of 0.72.

2. At 37.5°C the relationship between HP and embryonic age follows a sigmoid curve. Between D18 (HP 7.25 J g−1 h; 2.01 W kg−1) and D19 (HP 7.21 J g−1 h−1; 2.00 W kg−1) this function had a plateau phase with a duration of about 24 h.

3. During the cooling process, HP decreased continuously and the relationship between Ta and HP could be described by an exponential function. From the results, it was possible to calculate the relationships between Taf, as a measure of body core temperature, and Q10; the lower the Taf the higher the Q10.

4. Because the actual measured HP is the result of the negative effect of Q10 on HP and the stimulating influence of the CNS-generated HP, a Q10 of more than 2.0 demonstrates the absence of endothermy. Chicken embryos aged between 14 and 21 d have a Q10 of less than 2.0 at body temperatures (Taf) between 34 and 30°C. It is postulated that in chicken embryos of this age endothermic reactions may occur.

Surgical intervention in general anesthesia (GA) of the cow in late gestation is a stressful condition for both mother and fetus, potentially leading to premature delivery or fetal death. The present study hypothesized that fetal catheterization at days 246–253 (90% of gestation) is done with less physical and metabolic stress for the mother and fetus, when the surgery is performed on a standing cow and local anesthesia (LA) rather than on a recumbent cow in general anesthesia. Fetal and uterine maternal intra-vascular catheters were implanted during general anesthesia (GA, n=24) or local analgesia (LA, n=7). Blood gases and metabolite levels in the fetal calves and their mothers were measured during surgery and for 5 days post-operatively. During surgery, venous blood pH was higher (7.44±0.01 versus 7.39±0.01, P<0.05) and hemoglobin and oxygen contents lower in LA cows compared with GA cows (9.3±0.3 mg/dl versus 11.8±0.2 mg/dl, P<0.001 and 10.1±0.3 ml/dl versus 12.6±0.6 ml/dl, P<0.05). The differences between the two groups of fetuses reflected those of their dams in that LA fetuses showed lower arterial oxygen pressure (18.3±1.4 mmHg versus 24.8±1.4 mmHg, P<0.05) and hemoglobin (7.81±0.30 mg/dl versus 9.22±0.21 mg/dl P<0.01) and furthermore, they also showed higher blood glucose (2.4±0.2 mM versus 1.4±0.1 mM, P<0.01). During the 5 days post-surgery, 10 GA fetuses (42%) and 1 LA fetus (14%) died in utero. Bacterial contamination was implicated in six of the GA deaths and in the one LA death. In the dams with surviving calves, differences in hemoglobin (9.49±0.21 mg/dl versus 11.17±0.23 mg/dl P<0.001) and O2ct (10.9±0.3 ml/dl versus 12.5±0.5 ml/dl, P<0.05) were still present, and in addition, blood glucose was higher in LA versus GA cows (4.3±0.2 mM versus 3.8±0.1 mM, P<0.05). The choice of surgical method did not affect post-surgery blood chemistry in the surviving fetuses, except that the higher blood glucose in the LA fetuses at surgery tended to be maintained also post-operatively (2.0±0.2 mM versus 1.5±0.1 mM, P=0.07). The observed differences in blood chemistry parameters between the two methods of surgery and possibly in the fetal death may be explained by differences in catheterization method and the associated differences in physical and metabolic stress during and after surgery. Thus, surgery upon a standing cow in local anesthesia should be considered as an alternative to surgery in universal anesthesia for fetal catheterization in the cow in late gestation.  相似文献

1. Heat production (HP) and body core temperature (CT) where measured in 1- to 10-day old Muscovy ducklings and turkey chick, incubated during the last week before hatching at a lower (34.5 °C, LT-group) or at higher (38.5 °C, HT-group), than the normal temperature of 37.5 °C (control C-group).

2. In Muscovy ducklings, on the 1st day post-hatching HP was affected by exposure to low Ta of 10 °C Ta 28.2±3.9 W kg−1 in the LT-group vs. 18.1±2.4 W kg−1 in normal controls. On the same day, CT was higher (39.5±1.1 °C) in the HT- than in the CT-group (37.5±2.9 °C).

3. In turkeys, the relationships between Ta and HP could be described by parabola-like functions. Apart from the first day of life, the HP of the LT-group and the HT-group was higher than of the CT-group.

4. The low prenatal temperature of incubation resulted in a decrease of the preferred temperature in the LH-group and in an increase in the HT-group.

5. It is concluded that changes in incubation temperature at the end of embryonic development may induce an epigenetic temperature adaptation, which results in a long-lasting cold- and warm-adaptation in ducks but not in turkeys.

Dynamic changes in local sweat rates (Sw) and local evaporation rates from clothing (Ecl) have been observed during hot exposure. Four young male subjects wearing a cotton T-shirt and half shorts were exposed to 40 °C/50% for 1 h following exposure to 28 °C/50% for 30 min. Amount of water absorbed in clothing (Msw), clothing surface temperatures (Tcl), local heat flow rates, skin temperatures, body weight, rectal temperature, Sw and Ecl were continuously measured. Upon exposure to the heat, decrease in heat gain to the skin was observed as opposed to increase in Sw, Ecl, Msw and heat gain to the clothing surface.  相似文献

The lack of a truly satisfactory sensor which can characterize the thermal environment at the spatial scale experienced by small endotherms has hindered study of their thermoregulatory behavior. We describe a general design for a rugged, easily constructed sensor to measure standard operative temperature, Tes. We present specific designs for adult dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) and hatchling mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). Sensor response was stable and repeatable (±1.4%) over the course of several months. Over the range of conditions for which validation data were available (variable air temperature and wind with negligible net radiation), sensors predicted the mean net heat production of live animals to within ±0.023 W (equivalent to ±1°C at Tes=15°C). The main limit on accuracy was scatter in the data on metabolism and evaporative water loss in live animals. These sensors are far more rugged and easily constructed than the heated taxidermic mounts previously used to measure Tes. These characteristics facilitate the use of significant numbers of sensors in thermal mapping studies of endotherms.  相似文献

Rodents inhabiting high latitudes, close to the Arctic Circle or above it, are exposed to near 24 h daylight during the summer season. An example to such rodent species is the Norwegian lemming Lemmus lemmus, which is distributed in northern Fennoscandia. We measured daily rhythms of heat production (VO2), body temperature (Tb), motor activity and melatonin secretion (measured from its metabolite 6-sulfatoximelatonin 6-SMT) in individuals exposed to natural day light, Oulu Finland, in August 1997 and at a controlled ambient temperature of 22 °C. Our results show a daily rhythm of VO2 with an acrophase at 04:00 h and minimal values measured at 16:00 h, with a significant difference (p<0.001) between mean day and night values. 6-SMT also shows a daily rhythm with maximal secretion during the dark phase 24:00 and 06:00 h in which total 6-SMT values were 2.92±1.1 and 3.87±1.2 ng, respectively. The lowest values were recorded at 12:00 h; 0.86±0.63 ng. These results suggest that lemmings show a VO2 and melatonin daily rhythms, which seem to correlate with each other and it appears that melatonin secretion increases heat production.  相似文献

Comparative physiology is an important tool for understanding adaptation to environment. Regulatory nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) is an essential mechanism in small mammals for coping with low ambient temperatures. Because of its geographical location and its sharp climatic changes across short distances, Israel offers conducting comparative studies between different populations of the same species. The aims of this study were: (1) to compare NST-capacity daily rhythms, between the two populations of the broad-toothed field mouse Apodemus Mystacinus—that of Mount Carmel (Mediterranean) and that of Mount Hermon (Subalpinic), (2) to compare the thermoregulatory daily rhythms response to photoperiod manipulations of mice from the two populations.

Mice were acclimated for at least 3 weeks to long scotophase (16D:8L-LS) and then to long photophase (16L:8D-LP) at a constant ambient temperature (Ta) of 24±1 °C. The following variables were compared at four different times of the day (06, 12, 18, 24 h): minimal body temperature (TbMin), minimal oxygen consumption (VO2Min) measured at the lower critical point and their response to noradrenaline (NA), 1.5 mg/1 kg.Wb injected s.c., (VO2NA and TbNA). NST-capacity was calculated as the ratio between VO2NA and VO2Min. The measurements were carried out at Ta of 28 °C and in light conditions matching those of acclimation. NA was injected after establishing VO2Min and TbMin. The values mean±SD are given for each measurement for n=6.

A three-way ANOVA revealed a significant difference between the two populations. Significant differences were revealed at different hours within populations under the different photoperiod regimes for different measured variables.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cold strain index (CSI) for peripheral environmental stress using data from a previous footwear study. Eight men (20±2 yr) dressed in protective cold weather clothing with varying footwear underwent 5 days of cold air (−23.4 °C) testing while attempting to sit for 240 min. Rectal, skin, and toe temperatures (Ttoe) were continuously measured. All test exposures were ended after 50–165 min due to cold foot discomfort or Ttoe<5 °C. However, CSI values indicated little cold strain. Therefore, we revised CSI to include peripheral cold assessment, which was found to be consistent with subject behavior and measured low Ttoe.  相似文献

We have investigated the effect of prior exposure of rats to either a hot environment (40°C, 2.6 kPa water vapor pressure) or a control environment (24°C, 1.9 kPa water vapor pressure) on the development of tolerance to lipopolysaccharide. Sixty minutes of heat exposure significantly raised the abdominal temperature of the heat-stressed rats above that of the control animals for a period of 80 min (P<0.001). However, neither the magnitude nor the time-course of the febrile response of the heat-stressed rats was significantly different from that of the control animals when an initial injection of lipopolysaccharide was given 24 h after temperature exposure (P>0.05). Nevertheless, heat exposure did increase the rate of tolerance development to successive lipopolysaccharide injections, spaced 3 days apart. Heat-stressed animals were tolerant by the second injection of lipopolysaccharide, whilst the control animals were tolerant only by the third injection of lipopolysaccharide. Therefore, heat stress increases the rate of tolerance development to lipopolysaccharide without affecting the response of heat-stressed animals to their first lipopolysaccharide injection.  相似文献

Two new spin-crossover complexes, [Fe(Medpq)(py)2(NCS)2] · py · 0.5H2O (1) and [Fe(Medpq)(py)2(NCSe)2] · py (2) (Medpq = 2-methyldipyrido[3,2-f:2′,3′-h]-quinoxaline, py = pyridine), have been synthesized. The crystal structures were determined at both room temperature (298 K) and low temperature (110 K). Complexes 1 and 2 crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbca and monoclinic space group P21/n, respectively. In both complexes, the distorted [FeN6] octahedron is formed by six nitrogen atoms from Medpq, the trans pyridine molecules and the cis NCX groups. The thermal spin transition is accompanied by the shortening of the mean Fe–N distances by 0.194 Å for 2. The mononuclear [Fe(Medpq)(py)2(NCS)2] and [Fe(Medpq)(py)2(NCSe)2] neutral species interact each other via π-stacking, resulting in a one-dimensional extended structure for both 1 and 2. There exist C–HX (X = S, Se) hydrogen bonds for both complexes. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy reveal the occurrence of a gradual spin transition. The transitions are centered at T1/2 = 120 K for 1 and T1/2 = 180 K for 2, respectively.  相似文献

The short-horned lizard Phrynosoma douglassi was studied in a montane habitat (elevation of 2290 m) in the Guadalupe Mountains of Texas. The body temperatures (Tb) of active lizards were consistently between 35–36°C (grand mean=35.5°C) in the period from 0900 to 1800 h during the months of May through September. The lizards began their spring activity during April when environmental temperatures were still low. Although Tbs in April were significantly lower than during May through September, on sunny April days the lizards were able to maintain Tbs near 30°C even when air temperatures were as low as 1.5°C. P. douglassi at this site thermoregulated very effectively whenever they were not limited by the physical environment.  相似文献

Long-term estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women can bring relief to hot flushes and reduce loss of bone mass due to osteoporosis, however, such treatment often can cause uterine hyperplasia and other undesirable effects. This study compared changes in bone mineral content (BMC), uterine weight, pituitary weight and pituitary gonadotropin content in the ovariectomized rat model following treatment with estradiol (E2) or two levels of clomiphene citrate (CC), an estrogen agonist/antagonist.

Groups (n = 8–12) of adult ovariectomized (OVX) rats were implanted with E2 pellets (5 μg/day) or injected subcutaneously with CC at 1 mg/kg body wt (CC-1) or 5 mg/kg body wt (CC-5) twice weekly for 12 months. Placebo implanted OVX and intact (INT) female rats served as negative and positive controls, respectively. Following treatment, the uterus, pituitary gland and right femur were collected from each animal.

E2 treatment increased (P<0.05) uterine weight compared to all other treatment groups, while both CC doses increased uterine weight over the OVX group only (E2, 0.24±0.03; INT, 0.14±0.01; CC-1, 0.06±0.01; CC-5, 0.07±0.01; and OVX, 0.02±0.01 g per 100 g body wt). Pituitary weight was increased 15-fold (P<0.05) by E2 treatment over all other treatment groups (E2, 65.7±13.9; INT, 4.0±0.5; CC-1, 3.3±0.03; CC-5, 2.7±0.2; and OVX, 2.9±0.02 mg per 100 g body wt). Both E2 and CC treatments reduced pituitary luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone content (μg/pit) to INT levels and were lower (P<0.05) than OVX levels. Mean BMC of E2, CC-1- or CC-5-treated rats was greater (P<0.05) than that of either the INT or OVX groups, while INT animals had a higher BMC compared to OVX animals (E2, 0.027±0.003; CC-1, 0.026±0.001; CC-5, 0.028±0.001; INT, 0.021±0.001; and OVX, 0.017±0.001 g/cm per 100 g body wt). These data indicate that CC has the potential to reduce bone mineral loss without causing other undesirable effects, including uterine hyperstimulation, and thus needs to be further investigated.  相似文献

Knowing the ambient temperature (Ta) limits of normothermia in laboratory rodents is important because their thermoregulatory responses are useful in studies of physiology, pharmacology and toxicology. The present study assessed the Ta limits of normothermia using radiotelemetry to monitor core temperature (Tc), heart rate (HR), and motor activity (MA) in unrestrained, male and female Long-Evans rats over a 24 h period. Rats were housed individually in acrylic cages with wire-screen tops and bottoms and maintained at T'as ranging from 12 to 33.5°C for 24 h with food and water provided ad libitum on a 12:12 L:D photoperiod. The limits of normothermia (i.e. where there was no significant change in Tc) were <12–29.5°C for females and 14.5–29.5°C for males. Tc of males at T'as of 12, 32, and 33.5°C increased significantly above the baseline Tc. Female rats had a lower Tc than males at the warmest and coldest T'as. HR and MA were generally higher in females at all T'as. Males appeared to be poorly adapted to thermoregulate at T'as above 30°C as based on their excessively high T'cs, low MA, and marked weight loss compared to that of the females. Within the limits of normothermia the stability of Tc regulation (i.e. [(ΔTcTa) × 100]/2) was ±1.3 and ± 0.9% for males and females, respectively, over a 24 h period. These data on the stability of Tc in the male and female rat provide a valuable framework to study the acute and chronic effects of drugs, chemicals and other agents that affect temperature regulation.  相似文献

1 Metabolic rates (Vo2), body temperature (Tb), and thermal conductance (C) were first determined in newly captured Maximowiczi's voles (Microtus maximowiczii) and Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus campbelli) from the Inner Mongolian grasslands at a temperature range from 5 to 35 °C.

2 The thermal neutral zone (TNZ) was between 25 and 32.5 °C for Maximowiczi's voles and between 25 and 30 °C for Djungarian hamsters. Mean Tb was 37.0±0.1 °C for voles and 36.2±0.1 °C for hamsters. Minimum thermal conductance was 0.172±0.004 ml O2/g h °C for voles and 0.148±0.003 ml O2/g h °C for hamsters.

3 The mean resting metabolic rate within TNZ was 2.21±0.05 ml O2/g h in voles and 2.01±0.07 ml O2/g h in hamsters. Nonshivering thermogenesis was 5.36±0.30 ml O2/g h for voles and 6.30±0.18 ml O2/g h for hamsters.

4 All these thermal physiological properties are adaptive for each species and are shaped by both macroenvironmental and microenvironmental conditions, food habits, phylogeny and other factors.

The effects of β-glucan (BG) prepared from spent brewer’s yeast on gelatinization and retrogradation of rice starch (RS) were investigated as functions of mixing ratio and of storage time. Results of rapid visco-analysis (RVA) indicated that addition of BG increased the peak, breakdown, setback, and final viscosities, but decreased the pasting temperatures of the rice starch/β-glucan (RS/BG) mixtures. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data demonstrated an increase in onset (To), peak (Tp), and conclusion (Tc) temperatures and a decrease in gelatinization enthalpy (ΔH1) with increasing BG concentration. Storage of the mixed gels at 4 °C resulted in a decrease in To, Tp, Tc, and melting enthalpy (ΔH2). The retrogradation ratio (ΔH2H1) and the phase transition temperature range (Tc − To) of the mixed gels increased with storage time, but this effect was reduced by the addition of BG. BG addition also slowed the syneresis of the mixed gels. Results of dynamic viscoelasticity measurement indicated that the addition of BG promoted RS retrogradation at the beginning and then retarded it during longer storage times. The added BG also retarded the development of gel hardness during refrigerated storage of the RS/BG mixed gels.  相似文献
