When I first set out on a path to becoming a cell biologist, I would have never imagined that it would lead to a career in molecular animation. I had always thought I would follow a more traditional route. What happened? In this essay, I will describe the experiences that led to my decision to forge a career as an academic molecular animator, and how my work has evolved over the years. Increasingly complex research has made it more difficult to prepare data for publication, education, and outreach. Many scientists must also wade through black-box code to interface computational algorithms from diverse sources to supplement their bench work. To reduce these barriers we have developed an open-source plug-in, embedded Python Molecular Viewer (ePMV), that runs molecular modeling software directly inside of professional 3D animation applications (hosts) to provide simultaneous access to the capabilities of these newly connected systems. Uniting host and scientific algorithms into a single interface allows users from varied backgrounds to assemble professional quality visuals and to perform computational experiments with relative ease. By enabling easy exchange of algorithms, ePMV can facilitate interdisciplinary research, smooth communication between broadly diverse specialties, and provide a common platform to frame and visualize the increasingly detailed intersection(s) of cellular and molecular biology.  相似文献

Summary This workshop was an impromptu event, but the fact that a number of interesting problems were identified by the participants from the floor may indicate that it is worth repeating. If it is to be repeated, however, it is important that notice be given, and that the scope of the workshop be defined in advance, so that participants can be better informed and bring supporting data. The best approach would be to identify a convenor and define the scope of the workshop prior to the first circular for the next Seaweed Symposium; invitations could then be issued by the convenor for specific topics and data, and a very brief program could be issued with the third circular. Three groups of a total of 26 puppies were subjected to surface-induced hypothermia with or without limited left-heart bypass to seek recovery after 2.5-hr total circulatory arrest. In spite of various protective measures, surface-induced hypothermia which was carried out until the effective circulation ceased, failed to protect the animal from 2.5-hr circulatory arrest. With a combination of limited leftheart bypass, the central nervous tissue tolerated the procedure better than expected. Metabolic derangements, although severe immediately after the procedure, were reversible. Respiratory distress was a serious problem, which was considerably alleviated in the 3rd group of 10 puppies by perfusion of the lung with a solution approximating the intracellular electrolyte composition. Six puppies of this group survived the procedure, 5 without any persistent disorders. These results indicate the possibility of 2.5-hr hypothermie circulatory arrest.  相似文献

The aim of the workshop on rotifers in ecotoxicology was to stimulate discussions on new developments in the field. Discussions about the use of biomolecular tools indicate that gene expression analysis with rotifers should be available in the next few years. Such analyses will be a great asset as they enable ecotoxicologists to study molecular mechanisms of toxicity. Rotifers also appear as useful tools in the risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites that find their way into aquatic ecosystems because their sensitivity to some of these substances is higher than that of cladocerans and algae. The nature and extent of the impact of potential endocrine disruptors on aquatic invertebrates is another poorly resolved issue for which rotifers are a promising tool. Indeed, rotifers seem to be particularly sensitive to androgenic and anti-antiandrogenic substances, whereas copepods and cladocerans are typically more affected by estrogens and juvenile hormone-like compounds. Besides their usefulness in these emerging fields of aquatic ecotoxicology, it was emphasized that research with rotifers on basic issues like, e.g., toxicant interference with predation, competition, or interspecific and interclonal variation in ecotoxicological tests is still needed. The development of anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal parasites of sheep and goats has meant that there is an urgent need for non-chemical control of these parasites. In order to investigate a potential alternative method of control, a workshop on irradiated larval vaccines (ILV) was held in conjunction with the Second International Conference on Novel Approaches to the Control of Helminth Parasites of Livestock. The objectives of the workshop were to: (1) Review knowledge of irradiated helminth vaccines through the presentation of invited and contributed papers. (2) Identify opportunities for an ILV and in which host/parasite/production systems. (3) Determine what are the gaps in knowledge required to produce and apply an ILV. The workshop concluded that ILVs could be useful as research tools in the further definition of immune responses to parasites and in stimulating the immune response in young sheep and goats to facilitate the estimating of heritability of faecal egg counts. Although the workshop identified some problems associated with a live attenuated vaccine, an ILV could be a useful control measure in the production systems identified by the workshop. Before an ILV could be used on farms, additional research is required into the period of protection afforded by an ILV especially under field conditions. The efficacy of an ILV could be improved by interaction between host genotype and nutritional status and is deserving of further investigation.  相似文献

A workshop on DNA repair with emphasis on eukaryotic systems was held, under the auspices of the EC Concerted Action on DNA Repair and Cancer, at Noordwijkerhout (The Netherlands) 14-19 April 1991. The local organization of the meeting was done under the auspices of the Medical Genetic Centre South-West, The Netherlands (MGC), c/o Department of Radiation Genetics and Chemical Mutagenesis, University of Leiden (The Netherlands). Local organizers were: D. Bootsma (chairman), W. Ferro, J.H.J. Hoeijmakers, A.R. Lehmann, P.H.M. Lohman, L. Mullenders, and A.A. van Zeeland (secretarial assistance: Mrs. C. Escher-van Heerden and Mrs. R. Bontre). Over 190 scientists participated, and the format of the meeting followed that of the 1987 workshop on the 'Molecular Aspects of DNA Repair' (Friedberg et al., 1987). Plenary review talks in the mornings were followed, in the afternoon, by poster viewing in three or four parallel sessions. Groups of 15-20 posters were discussed in detail, and later on, in plenary sessions, chairpersons of the poster discussions reviewed the afternoons' posters. The principal themes of the meeting were the isolation and characterisation of repair genes and proteins, repair in specific sequences, consequences of defective DNA repair, and new methods for detecting DNA damage and repair. Remarkable progress has been made recently in all of these areas, and many exciting new results were presented. It is impossible to summarize all contributions to this (intensive) one-week meeting. Therefore, and for the sake of coherence, presentations that did not fit easily into any of the general themes of the meetings have not been included.  相似文献
