Setchell & Gardner (1924) provided a taxonomic treatment for the genus Ceramium from lower California and the Gulf of California, Mexico, in which they described several new species, including C. sinicola S. & G. described from Ensenada, BCN and C. interruptum S. & G. described from the vicinity of La Paz, BCS. The latter was later reduced to variety rank in C. sinicolaby Dawson (1950), a taxonomic decision that has subsequently been widely adopted. Phylogenetic analyses inferred from three molecular markers (chloroplast‐encoded rbcL, the RUBISCO spacer, and nuclear encoded SSU rDNA) from recent collections from the Pacific North‐west (California, Oregon) and the Gulf of California reveal a well supported assemblage of three corticated taxa: C. codicolaJ. Ag. 1894, C. sinicola and C. sinicola var. interruptum. Sequence divergence values among the three taxa are sufficient to warrant separate species ranking; hence, we reinstate C. interruptum as a widely distributed epiphyte for the region. C. sinicolais more closely related to C. codicolathan to C. interruptum, with the former two restricted to the host Codium. The molecule‐based relationships are congruent with evolutionary trends in cortication pattern and attachment mode.  相似文献

Reproductive biomass allocation in three Sargassum species   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Allocation of biomass to sexual reproductive (receptacle) tissue and vegetative (holdfast) tissue differed absolutely and relatively in three Sargassum species that form the bulk of the intertidal algal canopy in the northern Gulf of California. Sargassum herporhizum devoted a greater proportion of its thallus mass into its rhizoidal holdfast than did S. sinicola var. camouii or S. johnstonii, whose holdfasts are solid, more compact, and composed of a lower percentage of water. Conversely, more sexual receptacle tissue was produced by these two species with small holdfasts during the spring reproductive period. Sargassum sinicola var. camouii, which is the only species of the three that becomes fertile in the fall, produces a comparable amount of sexual tissue during this second period of reproduction. Removal of Sargassum from single-species patches showed that canopy regrowth by S. herporhizum with its encroaching rhizoidal holdfast was more rapid and complete than that of the other two species, which invest most of their reproductive efforts into sexual propagules that can disperse long distances. Sargassum herporhizum also displayed a more rapid and complete recovery of canopy cover in patches cleared of thalli and in control patches following the annual summer dieback. These two divergent modes of reproductive biomass allocation suggest that ability to encroach upon nearby open sites and ability to colonize distant discrete islands of suitable habitat represent two distinct reproductive strategies requiring different patterns of biomass allocation. Moreover, for energetic reasons, a species may not be able to excel at both modes of reproduction.  相似文献

Length, presence and weight of receptacles were compared in two populations of Sargassum sinicola Setchell et Gardner from El Cajete and Las Pacas in the southern Gulf of California, México. The length of El Cajete plants started to increase and reached their maximum during the colder months of the year during three consecutive years. Attrition occurred in September after the growing and reproducing peaks. Large and short laterals were clearly distinct when El Cajete plants reached their maximum size. Large and short laterals from the same plant, reproduced in spring and summer, respectively. The maximum size of Las Pacas plants did not reach those of El Cajete plants. The distinction between large and short laterals was not seen in the Las Pacas plants. Only one reproduction peak was observed in these plants. The adaptive significance of the difference between the two populations is discussed. Some differences persisted after reciprocal transplantation. On this basis, genotypic differentiation of the two populations of S. Sinicola is suggested.  相似文献

Investigation on seasonal variation in size and chemical constituents of Sargassum sinicola Setchell et Gardner from Bahía de La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, was carried out from a control bed and compared with an experimental bed with artificial nutrients added. No significant differences were found between the control and experimental thalli for size or chemical composition, except for iodine and raw fiber. For control thalli the results were: size 7.5–56.0 cm, alginate yield 7.2–13.7%, viscosity 58.7–191.7 millipascal seconds (mPa s), mannitol 2.9–8.1%, raw fiber 5.5–7.5% and iodine 0.020–0.141%; while in the experimental thalli the size ranged from 7.5 to 80.3 cm and the alginate yield was 7.8–10.4%, viscosity 41.4–163.4 mPa s, mannitol 2.9–8.3%, raw fiber 5.9–10.7% and iodine 0.021–0.098%. These variations were related to its natural growth cycle, and showed reductions during the senescence period. Results suggest that S. sinicola is not affected by relatively low nutrient concentrations, and could be considered as raw material for alginate production.  相似文献

The taxonomic and phylogenetic concepts within the Sargassum C. Agardh (Sargassaceae) species complex were evaluated through molecular phylogenetic analyses using portions of the chloroplast encoded rbcLS Operon. According to more conservative sequences (rbcL), Turbinaria (Turner) J. Agardh is a close and well‐supported sister lineage to the Sargassum species complex and an appropriate external outgroup for analyses of subgenera and subsections within Sargassum. Both rbcL and more rapidly evolving rbcLS spacer sequences indicated that the East Asiatic genus Myagropsis (Mertens et Turner) Fensholt, along with Sargassum sinicola Setchell et Gardner, represent the closest lineage to Sargassum and form appropriate internal outgroups. The rbcLS spacer region supported three of four subgeneric designations by J. Agardh and sectional levels within the subgenus Sargassum. However, some aspects of Agardh's system were not supported: many of the subsectional ranks or the phyletic concepts; Phyllotrichia was not monophyletic as a subgenus, and its species were also not the most ancestral of Sargassum; and subgenus Sargassum was not the most derived subgenus within the genus. This modern phylogeny suggests a deep evolutionary history for subgenus Sargassum with rapid speciation in closely related subsections and series, and a sister relationship between subgenera Arthrophycus and Bactrophycus.  相似文献

The taxonomy and biogeography of a genus with species that occur in geographically isolated regions is interesting. The brown algal genus Ishige Yendo is a good example, with species that apparently inhabit warm regions of both the northwestern and northeastern Pacific Ocean. We determined the sequences of mitochondrial cox3 and plastid rbcL genes from specimens of the genus collected over its distributional range. Analyses of the 86 cox3 and 97 rbcL sequences resulted in congruent trees in which Ishige sinicola (Setch. et N. L. Gardner) Chihara consisted of two distinct clades: one comprising samples from Korea and Japan, and the other comprising samples from the Gulf of California. Additional observations of the morphology and anatomy of the specimens agree with the molecular data. On the basis of results, we reinstated Ishige foliacea S. Okamura (considered a synonym of I. sinicola from the Gulf of California) for plants from the northwest Pacific region and designated a specimen in the Yendo Herbarium (SAP) as the lectotype. I. foliacea is distinguished by large (up to 20 cm) and wide (up to 20 mm) thalli, with a cortex of 4–7 cells, and a medulla composed of long, tangled hyphal cells. Both cox3 and rbcL sequence data strongly support the sister‐area relationship between the northwest Pacific region and the Gulf of California. A likely explanation for this pattern would be the presence of a species ancestral to contemporary species of Ishige in both regions during the paleogeological period, with descendants later isolated by distance.  相似文献

The green algal genus Blidingia (Ulvales), reported for the first time in California only 4 years ago, is now found to be fairly widely distributed there as B. minima (Nägeli ex Kützing) Kylin var. minima. B. minima var. subsalsa (Kjellman) Seagal is now recorded for California. Ulva vexata Setchell and Gardner [Enteromorpha vexata (Setch. & Gardn.) Doty] is reduced to varietal status as B. minima var. vexata, and is reported, to be found in 2 ecological forms. Forms with expanded, ulvoid blades are common to exposed localities and is the form described by Setchell & Gardner. Smaller, narrower, enteromorphoid forms are found near river mouths and are the kind referred to by Doty. There are many intermediate forms of this variety. Characters which are used to separate Blidingia from Enteromorpha are critically evaluated.  相似文献

Uncertainties about the identity of type specimens of red algae have frequently led to taxonomic and nomenclatural confusion. A procedure for extracting PCR-amplifiable DNA from formalin-fixed material and herbarium specimens was used to investigate the taxonomic status of several South African Gigartinaceae. We compared nucleotide sequences in the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region in type specimens and other historically important collections presently referred to Gigartina bracteata, G. radula and G. stiriata. The following opinions are supported: (1) Fucus bracteatus S.G. Gmelin, Chondrodictyon capense Kützing and Iridaea clathrata Decaisne represent a single species of South African Gigartina (G. bracteata (S.G. Gmelin) Setchell & Gardner) in which the disintegration of tetrasporangial sori results in a reticulate thallus. (2) Mastocarpus polycarpus Kützing, M. incrassatus Kützing and Iridaea lapathifolia Kützing represent a single species of South African Gigartina (G. polycarpa (Kützing) Setchell & Gardner) that has often, but erroneously, been called G. radula (Esper) J. Agardh. (3) Mastocarpus verrucosus Kützing is a later heterotypic synonym of Iridaea papillosa Bory (Sarcothalia papillosa (Bory) Leister) and was based on material that probably came from southern South America rather than from South Africa, the provenance given by Kützing. (4) Fucus stiriatus Turner and Sphaerococcus burmannii C. Agardh represent a single species of South African Sarcothalia (S. stiriata (Turner) Leister).  相似文献

Morphology of field material and life history in culture were studied in Scytosiphon canaliculatus (Setchell et Gardner) comb. nov. from northern Japan. Erect gametophytes of S. canaliculatus are cylindrical, tubular, up to 7 mm wide and 40 cm long, and without regular constrictions. S. canaliculatus has pronounced anisogamy and ascocysts accompanied with plurilocular gametangia. The life history of S. canaliculatus showed an alternation between erect gametophytes and crustose prostrate sporophytes bearing unilocular sporangia. Since field sporophytes of S. canaliculatus were found to be identical with Hapterophycus canaliculatus Setchell et Gardner (Ralfsiaceae, Phaeophyceae), it is proposed to transfer H. canaliculatus to the genus Scytosiphon. In the field, gametophytes with plurilocular gametangia appeared in spring and disappeared in summer. Sporophytes with unilocular sporangia were collected in late autumn and winter. Unilocular sporangia were produced at 15°C in short-day culture conditions and unispores developed into erect gametophytes at 5–15°C. It is suggested that the seasonal Occurrence of gametophytes in the field is due to the seasonal formation of unilocular sporangia, which is regulated by temperature and photoperiod.  相似文献

Most sternaspid species have been described from shallow water, and Caulleryaspis Sendall & Salazar-Vallejo, 2013 includes one deep water species: C. gudmundssoni Sendall & Salazar-Vallejo, 2013 from Iceland. In Sternaspis Otto, 1821, the most speciose genus, most species were described from shallow water and only three thrive in deep water: S. maior Chamberlin, 1919 from the Gulf of California, S. princeps Selenka, 1885 from New Zealand, and S. riestchi Caullery, 1944 from Indonesia. The study of some deep sea sternaspids from the Pacific Ocean in the collections of six research institutions resulted in the discovery of six undescribed species, and for three of them there were abundant materials showing ventro-caudal shield development. Caulleryaspis fauchaldi sp. n. is described based on specimens from Oregon and California; it differs from the known species because it has a shield with rounded anterior margins and its peg chaetae form thin, small spines. Caulleryaspis nuda sp. n. was collected off Oregon; it is unique because its shield lacks a layer of sediment particles firmly attached, but has instead a thin layer of small particles loosely attached. Four other species are newly described in Sternaspis: S. annenkovae sp. n. was collected east off the northern Kurile Islands in about 4,000 m depth; it differs from other species by having a bicolored body, with the introvert darker than the abdomen, and its ventro-caudal shield plates are divergent resulting in a divided fan. The second species, S. maureri sp. n. was found off Peru in 1296–6489 m water depths and in the Southwestern Pacific in 795–3830 m; it resembles S. williamsae sp. n. but differs because its shield has better-developed ribs, the fan has a shallow or indistinct median notch and has lateral notches well-developed. The third species, S. uschakovi sp. n., was found in the Okhotsk Sea in 592–1366 m, off California in 1585 m, Gulf of California in 1200–1274 m, and Western Mexico in 2548 m; it resembles S. africana Augener, 1918 and S. andamanensis Sendall & Salazar-Vallejo, 2013 in having shields with a denticulate posterior margin; the latter two species live in shallow water and they differ from each other and from the new species by a combination of shield and papillae features. The fourth species, S. williamsae sp. n., was found off Oregon in 1000–2400 m, and off California in 878–1246 m; it resembles S. annenkovae because both species have shields with fans narrower than the anterior margin width, but differ in the relative development of shield features and in the relative size of prostomium and mouth; as stated above it also resembles S. maureri sp. n. but its shield has poorly-developed ribs, its median notch is distinct, and the lateral notches are poorly developed or indistinct. The marine waters of the Baja California peninsula (Mexico) are a rich source of brown seaweeds with a great potential for exploitation. For that reason, Sargassum sinicola, Eisenia arborea, and Macrocystis pyrifera collected from different locations were subjected to extraction of sodium alginate using a pilot-plant scale process developed in our facilities. The composition and sequence parameters of the recovered alginate were studied by infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The spectral analysis of the products revealed that sodium alginate from S. sinicola contains a greater proportion of guluronate monomers (64%) than that from E. arborea (48%), and M. pyrifera (38%). Computation of the frequencies of diads and triads indicated that the alginate from S. sinicola was constructed by intercalated guluronate-blocks of 14 residues in length. In contrast, the length of the G-block in the alginates from E. arborea and M. pyrifera were 7 and 4 residues, respectively. The results show that S. sinicola, E. arborea, and M. pyrifera are sources of sodium alginate with different mannuronate/guluronate ratios, as well as a varied building-block length. In consequence, aqueous dispersions of sodium alginate from the three studied species are expected to exhibit different physical properties.  相似文献

Silvetia compressa ( J. Agardh) Serrão et al. is a common member of the upper intertidal fucoid community on the Pacific coast of America from Humboldt County, California, to Punta Baja, Baja California, Mexico. A relatively narrow range of morphological variability is exhibited by most mainland populations, regardless of latitude, but some mainland populations and all insular populations participate in a complex pattern that we have attempted to analyze. A few populations on the Monterey Peninsula in which the fronds are atypically delicate were described by Setchell & Gardner as f. gracilis, to which was assigned a population from Santa Catalina Island. After comparing populations from various parts of the range of the species, including all of the Channel Islands, we conclude that two subspecies may be recognized. In subsp. compressa, which includes f. gracilis as a growth form and occurs chiefly on the mainland, the frond is robust with long tapered receptacles. In the variant subspecies, which is chiefly insular but also occurs on the coast of northern Baja California, the typical frond has slender axes as in f. gracilis, but is more densely branched and has short ellipsoidal receptacles. Comparison of nucleotide sequences from the ITS regions of rDNA revealed an identical pattern for subsp. compressa from Baja California and central California, including populations assignable to f. gracilis. By contrast, the pattern for the variant subspecies differed by 2 bp (0.3%) from that of subsp. compressa.  相似文献

This study integrates landings statistics and biological studies of the red algaGigartina skottsbergii Setchell & Gardner. The analysis of the landings and carrageenan production in Chile suggeststhat this resource will suffer a strong harvesting pressure during the nextyears. Biological results on sporulation, germination, sporeling growth and survivorship in laboratory,indoor tanks and field conditions, indicated that cultivation of this species istechnically feasible, as spores can be seeded on ropes and other substrata. Vegetative propagation of this species through tissue fragmentationis also possible. Vegetative fragments of this carrageenophyte have 20 to30% higher growth rates than whole fronds in suspended culture systems. Protoplast production can be also explored for bypassing restrictions inspore availability. Major advantages that encourage the cultivation of G. skottsbergii include its gel quantity and quality, its pathogen-freecondition, a high reproduction potential and its regeneration capacity. Onthe other hand, the major constraints are related to its relatively slowgrowth as compared to other carrageenophytes, limited availability ofspores and high mortality during juvenile stages.  相似文献

Seven sites in Bahía de los Angeles, northern Gulf of California, were sampled seasonally over a three-year period. Five species of brown algae previously not recorded from this bay were identified: Ralfsia pacifica, Sporochnus balleanus, Hydroclathrus clathratus, Colpomenia sinuosa and Padina mexicana. Of these, H. clathratus also provided a new record for the northern Gulf of California. One species previously recorded from the bay, Dictyopteris undulata, was not observed. On a seasonal basis, temperature and biodiversity showed an inverse relationship: highest species numbers occurred in spring, when temperatures were lowest, and lowest species numbers occurred in autumn when temperatures were highest. Most species of brown algae in Baífa de los Angeles are annuals.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe species Palarus latifrons (bee pirates) has been recorded in Saudi Arabia as an invasive species. This pest can destroy honey bee colonies under certain conditions. The origin of this species in Africa and it has a good ability to adapt to desert conditions. Studies on this species are very few but its current distribution in the Arabian deserts is mainly in the Arabian Gulf countries. This study presents maps for the possible expansion of this species to invade other desert areas in the Arabian countries’ under current and near-future conditions (2030).MethodsThis pest is a solitary insect with high activity during summer. It is hypothesized that summer conditions and especially temperature are the limiting factor for its distribution in the deserts. The analysis depended on generating maps based on temperatures during summer and based on two bioclimatic factors. Maxent and the geographical information system (GIS) were used to perform the analysis.Results and conclusionsAll maps showed the high ability of this pest to spread in the Gulf countries. In North Africa: south Egypt and Libya, and some parts of Algeria showed suitability for Palarus. The invasion of this pest towards North Africa can happen mostly due to trading activities with Gulf countries especially materials containing soil. Continues monitoring for the activity of Palarus in the risk areas is highly advised.  相似文献

Nine species of small, filamentous green algae were identified from St. Lucia, in the Lesser Antilles. Observations were made on field-collected material and isolates obtained in unialgal culture. Acrochaete marchantiae (Setchell & Gardner) comb. nov. has been transferred from Pringsheimiella marchantae Setchell & Gardner. Trichothyra irregularis is described as a new genus and species, Blastophysa arrhiza Wille and B. polymorpha Kjellman are considered synonyms of B. rhizopus Reinke, and Phaeophila polymorpha Jao is considered synonym of P. dendroides (Crouan) Batters. These species were associated with a wide variety of substrate, including other algae, corals, rocks, and wood, with little apparent host specificity. All of the species recorded are new records for St. Lucia and five species are new records for the Caribbean.  相似文献

Sequences of the end of the 5.8S gene and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS‐2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA have been determined for 19 species of the brown algal genus Sargassum (Sargassaceae), representing three subgenera and eight sections (sections are in parentheses): Phyllotrichia, Bactrophycus (Teretia, Spongocarpus, Halochloa and Repentia) and Sargassum (Acanthocarpicae, Malacocarpicae, Zygocarpicae) to assess the taxonomic position of the section Phyllocystae traditionally included within the Bactrophycus. The sequence of Myagropsis myagroides (Mertens ex Turner) Fensholt (Sargassaceae) was used as an outgroup. Sequences of ITS‐2 were analyzed using neighbor‐joining, parsimony and maximum likelihood methods. The results showed the existence of three clades in Sargassum, corresponding to the three subgenera. The subgenus Phyllotrichia is positioned near the outgroup. Two robust clades were obtained, one corresponding to the subgenus Bactrophycus and the other to the subgenus Sargassum. Sargassum mcclurei Setchell and Sargassum quinhonense Nguyen, the two Phyllocystae investigated, are close to species belonging to the section Zygocarpicae in the subgenus Sargassum. A transfer of the section Phyllocystae to the subgenus Sargassum is therefore proposed on the basis of molecular data (ITS‐2) and morphological data (receptacles and basal leaf).  相似文献
