In the laboratory, blood feeding rates, oögenesis and fat body development were utilized to assess the effects of photoperiod and temperature in the conditioning of adult female Culiseta inornata for aestivation. Long-day (16L:8D) and short-day (8L:16D) photoperiods were examined in combination with temperatures of 15°C, 20°C, and 25°C. All tested individuals were reared from egg to adult under one of six possible regimes.Blood feeding occurred in approximately 60% of the females subjected to short-day conditions. Females subjected to long-day regimes exhibited gonotrophic concordance (the inhibition of blood feeding), evidenced by a decrease in overall blood-feeding rate to 20%. Inhibition of blood feeding by long-day females decreased in a linear fashion with increasing temperature. No interaction of the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon blood feeding was apparent. Examination of the ovarioles of post-blood feeding females, reared under each of the above conditions, revealed no evidence of gonotrophic dissociation (the inhibition of oögenesis despite continued blood feeding).Fat body hypertrophy occurred in females reared under long-day conditions, whereas hypotrophy of this tissue was apparent in short-day females. No significant difference in fat body development occurred between parous and nulliparous females reared under long-day photoperiod conditions. Short-day blood-fed females reared at 15°C deposited a significantly greater amount of fat than short-day blood fed females reared at 20° and 25°C, and short-day nonbloodfed females reared at 15°, 20°, and 25°C. The primary stimulus for fat body hypertrophy appears to be long-day photoperiod conditions. Temperature exerted little discernible effect upon this process, and there was no interaction between the effects of photoperiod and temperature upon the degree of fat body development.

In boreal lakes, temperature and photoperiod are important environmental cues affecting reproduction, growth and feeding rates of benthic invertebrates; however, how invertebrates cope with seasonal changes in the availability of their food sources has rarely been addressed. In this study, where temperature and light conditions were controlled, we aimed at assessing whether Hyalella azteca amphipods from the littoral zone of boreal lakes adjust their feeding rates in response to the dynamics of their food sources and their population structure. Using a gravimetric approach, we compared the ingestion and absorption rates of amphipods from a natural population collected periodically during the ice-free season. Amphipods were fed in the laboratory with conditioned leaf detritus. Feeding rates increased regardless of seasonal variations of temperature and photoperiod in the lake. Field data suggest this increase could be linked to seasonal changes in the population structure or in the diet of amphipods. This suggests that H. azteca amphipods adjusted their feeding rates with their energy and nutrient requirements and/or developed a compensatory feeding trade-off to cope with the dynamics of their different food sources in lakes.

The study reports on the effects of prenatal and/or postnatal exposures to short-night or long-night conditions, and of crowding, on embryogenesis and oögenesis in alate virginoparae, gynoparae, and oviparae of a holocyclic strain of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, from Yakima, Washington State. In alate virginoparae raised at a density of 10–20 per radish seedling in a short-night regime (8 hr darkness per diem), 3–4 embryos occurred in each of their 10 ovarioles, when the aphids attained adulthood. More than 30 larvae were deposited by most of these alatae. However, in young adult gynoparae, raised at these densities in a long-night regime (15 hr darkness per diem), only one viable embryo (a presumptive ovipara) occurred per ovariole. The follicle containing this embryo was followed by 1–2 abnormal follicles in each ovariole, and the number of larvae deposited by a gynopara was generally less than 10. In young adult oviparae similarly raised under a long-night regime, only one egg typically occurred in each of their 10 ovarioles, and the eggs deposited by an ovipara (only after it had mated) generally numbered less than 10. Alate virginoparae and gynoparae contained an additional embryo in some of their ovarioles when these morphs were raised at a lower density (1–5 per plant).Presumptive gynoparae partially developed the reproductive features of alate virginoparae when transferred to a short-night regime at birth; the converse was true when presumptive alate virginoparae were transferred to a long-night regime early in larval life. Oviparae maintained in short nights from before birth developed the appearance of apterous virginoparae but still produced eggs rather than embryos. However, their oögenesis was enhanced and eggs (10–20) were deposited by them without prior mating. Under all regimes tested, oviparae were always deposited early in the larviposition sequence of their alate mothers, and the number of oviparae deposited never exceeded 15.The possible involvement of juvenile hormone in the regulation of these events and the ecological significance of the results are discussed.

The two major rhythms of the biosphere are daily and seasonal; the two major adaptations to these rhythms are the circadian clock, mediating daily activities, and the photoperiodic timer, mediating seasonal activities. The mechanistic connection between the circadian clock and the photoperiodic timer remains unresolved. Herein, we show that the rhythmic developmental response to exotic light:dark cycles, usually used to infer a causal connection between the circadian clock and the photoperiodic timer, has evolved independently of the photoperiodic timer in the pitcher-plant mosquito Wyeomyia smithii across the climatic gradient of eastern North America from Florida to Canada and from the coastal plain to the mountains. We conclude that the photoperiodic timing of seasonal events can evolve independently of the daily circadian clock.

Summary An attempt has been made to find out the productivity and periodicity of the phytoplankton in relation to the physical and chemical characteristics of the river Ganges, between University Ghat and Raj Ghat at Varanasi. The observations were taken during a single year (i.e., March 1957 to March 1958). The chemical analyses of the water and estimates of the number of phytoplankton were made on samples collected fortnightly. The phytoplankton has proved to be eutrophic and polymixic in nature. Diatoms formed the largest bulk, blue-greens being the second major constituent while the green algae formed the third in order of abundance with, however, large number of species. A definite phytoplankton periodicity has been noticed and found to be seasonal in character.Correlations between the phytoplankton periodicity and population maxima, with the habitat factors revealed depletion of nutrients like, nitrogen, phosphate, silica, carbon, magnesium and sulphates.Changes in the phytoplankton populations were clearly evident more in relation to physical than to chemical conditions of the water. Changes in water-level, transparency and temperature affected the growth of the phytoplankton.High alkalinity and buffering capacity resulted in preferential growth of diatoms and blue-green algae. Rich phosphates and silicates coupled with moderate nitrogen contents were responsible for high phytoplankton yields in summer and winter seasons. The abundance of blue-greens may be due to the higher values of pH, temperature, dissolved organic matter, phosphate, nitrogen, and relatively high values of dissolved oxygen. Green algae showed a wide range of adaptability but could not develop in any abundance.

The horn fly, HAEMATOBIA IRRITANS (L.), is a bloodsucking pest of cattle found in almost all cattle-raising areas of the northern hemisphere.Predisposition to diapause in the pupal stage was determined in the adult parent. The predisposition was influenced by photoperiod which may have its effect either directly on the insect or indirectly by influencing the host blood. The percentage of the pupae that entered diapause varied inversely with the length of the photoperiod between 12 and 20 hours. Light in the visible range (7,800 to 4,000 A.U.) was provided byCool-whitefluorescent tubes. The addition of ultraviolet radiation (3,900 to 2,800 A.U.) in the 16- and 20-hour photoperiods further decreased the percentage of diapause.

The development of the embryo and endosperm has been investigated in an intraspecific Tulipa gesneriana cross and in the incongruent cross T. gesneriana ×T. agenensis at intervals of 10 days, from 12 to 82 days after pollination (DAP). In both tulip crosses, the zygote gives rise to an apparently
undifferentiated cell mass, the proembryonal cell mass, on which a suspensor then develops. Subsequently, a globular embryo
is formed on top of the suspensor. This embryo finally elongates, giving rise to a spindle-shaped embryo. The cellular endosperm
fills the whole embryo sac in mature seeds, except for a region immediately around the embryo. In both crosses, aberrant developments
were found. In the intraspecific T. gesneriana cross, the pollen tubes did not open in a number of ovules. In other ovules, the pollen tubes seemed to have opened, but an
embryo or endosperm was not found or only endosperm was observed. In the cross T. gesneriana ×T. agenensis, fewer pollen tubes entered the ovules than in the intraspecific T. gesneriana cross. The ovules with embryo and endosperm formation of the incongruent interspecific cross showed, in general, retarded
development in comparison with the intraspecific T. gesneriana cross. The first globular embryos and spindle-shaped embryos were found at the later fixation dates and the relatively lower
number of spindle-shaped embryos at 82 DAP had a shorter average length. The number of ovules with deformations in embryo
and/or endosperm development was also higher in the cross T. gesneriana × T. agenensis in comparison with the intraspecific T. gesneriana cross. Between 87% and 100% of the ovules with embryo and endosperm development showed normal development in the intraspecific
T. gesneriana cross, while in the incongruent interspecific cross, from 22 DAP, between 17% and 56% of the ovules showed normal development.
Of those ovules with aberrations in embryo and/or endosperm formation, about 80% had a deformed endosperm, of which more than
50% also contained a deformed embryo. Embryos of the incongruent cross might be saved by the application of embryo rescue
techniques.

The effects of plant growth conditions (light intensity, temperature and photoperiod) on the proportion of spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) and predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis) entrapped by type VI trichomes were investigated in the cultivated tomato Lycopersicon esculentum. Trichomes released sticky substances showing rapid hardening when the trichome head was ruptured by contact with mites. Adult individuals of both species of mites were immobilized by exudates in a higher percentage on leaf stalks from plants grown in the light (160 einsteins cm-2s-1) than on leaf stalks from plants grown in the shade (50 einsteins cm-2 s-1). Leaf stalks from plants grown in the light showed bigger trichome heads. More predatory mites were also entrapped on the leaf stalks from plants grown at 18°C (65% RH) as compared to the ones grown at 24°C (60% RH), whereas trichome heads were bigger under the former conditions. Contrary to leaf stalks, leaflet areas, through differences in trichome density and size, showed no diffences in predator and spider mite entrapment. Trichome head size was probably related to mite entrapment. It is also hypothesised that temperature increase might influence predator entrapment through effects on trichome quality.

The status of the names, Physalis minima L. and P. maxima Mill. (Solanaceae), and their alleged presence on the Indian subcontinent are discussed. The issues of nativity and identity of Linnaean Physalis minima are long-debated while the use of the name P. maxima Mill. and its report from India are recent. The available evidence indicates that the name "P. minima L." is misapplied to two different elements, viz., P. angulata L. and P. lagascae Roem. & Schult. The name Physalis minima L. may be rejected as nomen confusum, for which the paper provides the primary information. As on today, it is submerged under the synonymy of P. angulata L. The correct name for the widely known P. minima is P. lagascae. The name "P. maxima Mill." applied to the escape and naturalized weed in the Indian subcontinent and elsewhere is to be substituted by P. pruinosa L., a name misapplied to P. grisea (Waterf.) M. Martínez.

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, is a major pest worldwide. An examination of the impact of temperature, relative humidity (RH) and developmental stages of M. persicae on the efficacy of the whitefly mycoinsecticide Mycotal®, based on Lecanicillium muscarium and the effects of infection on aphid fecundity was evaluated under controlled conditions. Although this fungus can be grown at a broad range of temperatures (15–30°C), the optimum temperature for control of M. persicae ranged between 20 and 30°C. L. muscarium had high efficacy as a microbial control agent against M. persicae between 55% and 90% RH. Total mortality of aphids treated with different spore dosages of L. muscarium varied according to the developmental stage: adults, fourth and third instar nymphs proved more susceptible than first instar nymphs. Although the fungus did not affect the rate of nymph production, the reproductive period of aphids significantly decreased with increasing the spore dosage. Thus, total fecundity of treated aphids was 22.6 ± 1.1 and 31.6 ± 2.4 offspring per adult at the medium (644 ± viable spore/mm2) and low (330 ± 40 viable spore/mm2) dosages, compared with 45.7 ± 4.3 offspring per untreated aphid. The results suggest that L. muscarium has the potential as a biological control agent of M. persicae.

Using a closed circuit technique, the oxygen consumption of 108 piglets below one week of age have been measured while modifying the physical attributes of the thermal environment. Moving the piglets onto a wooden floor from concrete reduced the oxygen consumption rate from 37.8 ml to 34.5 ml/kg. min) at 10°C, and from 33.7 to 31.4 ml/(kg. min) on a rubber floor at the same temperature. Oxygen consumption was also significantly reduced when the piglets were placed on a straw floor, were supplied with radiant heat and when the floor temperature was raised independently of chamber temperature. It is concluded that the provision of supplementary heating either in the floor or by overhead radiation can greatly reduce the effects of a cold environment on the new-born pig and so enhance the animal's viability.

Summary This paper explores the problem of adapting development time to changes in the length of time conditions are favourable for growth and reproduction (season length). It is shown that systematic changes in season length along some gradient such as latitude can generate either simple clines in development time or saw-tooth clines. The relationship between development time and body size gives rise to a corresponding variation in body size. The generation of a saw-tooth cline does not require sharp environmental changes. Both types of clinal variation are observed in insects.

The effects of rearing temperature (and photoperiod) on growth, development, body size, and diapause induction and termination
in the yellow dung fly, Scathophaga stercoraria, were investigated by allowing replicate families of larvae to develop in the field along a time sequence approaching the
onset of winter. This was supplemented with extensive laboratory rearing. At constant laboratory temperatures, growth rates
were maximal between 15°C and 20°C and decreased at higher (25°C) and lower (10°C) temperatures, while the development rate
was maximal at 25°C. Perhaps related to this, yellow dung flies reached a given size faster at naturally variable, as opposed
to constant, temperatures. In the field, lower temperatures towards the end of the season resulted in larger individuals that
grew faster. Adult body size increased as development time, expressed in calendar days, increased, a positive relationship
commonly taken for granted in life history theory, but decreased as development time expressed in degree-days increased. The
effect of temperature on growth, development and body size can thus change or even reverse if individuals can alter their
growth rate independently of development time, and if the physiological effects of temperature are factored out by converting
development time into degree-days above a lower development threshold. Therefore, supposedly well-established trends possibly
need to be re-examined along these lines. Pupal winter diapause towards the end of the season was highly reversible by temperature.
Pre- and post-winter emergence patterns together suggest that the minimum time for yellow dung flies to successfully complete
development, at any time of the year, is about 230–250 degree-days.
