Qualitative and quantitative differences in carrageenan composition of gametophytes of the rhodophyte Mastocarpus stellatus (Gigartinales) were observed in this study. Carrageenans in gametophytes belong to the kappa family (κ-, ι-, ν-, μ-carrageenan). The dominant fractions were κ- and ι-carrageenan (more than 80 % of the total carrageenans). Mean total carrageenan content in gametophytes was of 37.32?±?1.21 % DW. Spatial and seasonal variations were observed, mainly related to changes on environmental and oceanographic factors and the role of carrageenans in adapting the fronds to these changes. Maximum values in carrageenan content were observed for San Román (Biscay Bay) in May and for Laxe and Mougás (Atlantic coast) in June. The results of this study indicated that spatial differences in carrageenan content were due to interactions of different factors, rather than the effect of a single factor. Fronds from San Román had higher carrageenan content (43.23?±?1.87 % DW) than those collected at two sites of the Atlantic coast, Mougás and Laxe (32.20?±?1.14 % DW). San Román is exposed to the open sea, windy and oriented to the north, and the water temperature is higher in summer than in the Atlantic coast. However, seasonal variations in carrageenan content resulted to be more related to other factors directly correlated with the input of energy in the ecosystems (irradiance, sunshine hours and insolation). Thus, carrageenan content began to increase in early spring when the number of sunlight hours increased. Maximum values were reached in late spring or early summer, just before maximum values of irradiance and air temperature were achieved.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative differences in carrageenan composition of gametophytes and tetrasporophytes of Chondrus crispus were observed in this study. Carrageenans in gametophytes belong to the kappa family (κ-, ι-, ν- and μ-carrageenan). The dominant fractions were κ- and ι-carrageenan (more than 50% of the total carrageenans). In tetrasporophytes, the presence of λ-carrageenan was confirmed. Carrageenan content in gametophytes (37.4?±?1.68% DW) was higher than in tetrasporophytes (29.13?±?0.76% DW). Spatial and temporal variation in carrageenan content in both life cycle phases appears to be related mainly to seawater and air temperatures, insolation, water movement and desiccation. The highest values of carrageenan content were recorded in those localities where higher values of precipitation, wind speed or water movement occurred. A bimodal temporal pattern on carrageenan content was observed. Fronds showed a high carrageenan content in spring and autumn. During these seasons, the content was over 40% in gametophytes and 30% in the tetrasporophytes. In summer and winter, these values down in both life cycle phases below 30%. In general the highest carrageenan contents were related to highest seawater temperatures. On the contrary, high air temperature and high insolation appeared to be unfavourable for carrageenan production. Red alga Kappaphycus alvarezii Doty is an important commercial species widely cultivated in southeast Asian countries for its polysaccharide, kappa-carrageenan. Common post-harvest handling technique involves sun-drying of harvested seaweed on platforms at the farms. Quantity and quality of carrageenan varies depending on the duration and care taken during the post-harvest handling of the raw seaweed. In this study, dynamics of moisture content, water activity index (aw), carrageenan yield, and carrageenan quality were investigated by subjecting the seaweed to three post-harvest methods: (1) freeze-drying (FD), (2) shade-drying (SD), and (3) direct sun-drying (DSD). Seaweed dried under FD and SD produced high yield (56–58 %), superior gel strength (1,454–1,424 g cm?2), high viscosity (57–58 cPs), and low syneresis (15–17 %). But, carrageenan extracted from DSD seaweed gave 28 % lower yield, 38 % lower gel strength, 27 % lower viscosity, and 8–9 % higher syneresis. In addition, gelling temperature and melting temperature of the DSD carrageenan were lower by 4 and 9 °C, respectively. Molecular size analyses of carrageenan extracted from seaweed dried under FD and SD contained carrageenan of 700 KDa (80 %) and 200 KDa (4–10 %). However, carrageenan extracted from DSD seaweed contained smaller carrageenan molecules, 460 KDa (55 %), 210 KDa (25 %), and <100 KDa (20 %). Further, scanning electron microscope images illustrated the severe effects of DSD on the morphology of seaweed cells. Therefore, SD technique was found to be the best post-harvest processing technique that gave quality carrageenan in a high quantity. Seaweed farming in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Region is carried out in a number of countries, most of them farming Eucheuma denticulatum, Kappaphycus alvarezii and Kappaphycus striatum. These species are farmed mostly in Tanzania with limited production in Madagascar, Mozambique and Kenya; current production (2012) stands at 15,966 t (dry weight) year?1 of Eucheuma and Kappaphycus, valued at US$ 4.2 million with 95 % of this tonnage coming from Tanzania. Other countries in the region have limited or no seaweed production owing to problems of epiphytes, ice ice and markets. The problem of epiphytes coupled with ice ice that WIO countries are facing causes die-off of Kappaphycus which is the preferred species in foreign markets for its thicker gel, kappa carrageenan (vs. the weaker iota carrageenan from Eucheuma). New efforts are put to curb these problems including moving seaweed farms to deeper waters and cultivation trials of other carrageenophytes as well as agar-producing species, agarophytes. Research work has been initiated to evaluate Gracilaria and Hypnea farming and processing in Tanzania, the Republic of Mauritius and Mayotte. Gracilaria farming is at experimental stages as a biofilter of fishpond effluents and as potential species for the production of agar with growth rates of 1.5–1.9 % day?1. Hypnea farming is only being initiated in Mauritius and Mayotte at present. Other innovations including value addition by making various seaweed products and encouraging the consumption of seaweed as food at least in Tanzania and Mauritius are increasing further the importance of the seaweed farming and processing industry in the WIO Region.  相似文献

Kappaphycus alvarezii, a kappa carrageenan yielding red seaweed, was cultivated in Indian subtropical waters on the Palk Bay side of Bay of Bengal in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, at three different sites: Vedalai, Munaikadu, and Thonithurai, for 1 year from April 2011 to March 2012. The maximum crop yields of 416 ± 51 and 550 ± 41 FW raft?1 were recorded at Vedalai and Munaikadu, respectively, in December 2011, whereas a maximum of 326 ± 49 FW raft?1 was recorded at Thonithurai in April 2011. Similarly, the maximum daily growth rates (DGRs) of 4.30 ± 0.51 % and 4.92 ± 0.40 % were obtained at Vedalai and Munaikadu, respectively, in December 2011, and 3.76 ± 0.48 % was recorded at Thonithurai in April 2011. Variations in environmental parameters like seawater temperature, salinity, nitrate, and phosphate were found to influence the growth of the seaweed. The maximum carrageenan content as a percentage of dry weight was 29.30 ± 0.61 % (Vedalai), 31.00 ± 0.71 % (Munaikadu), and 29.10 ± 1.12 % (Thonithurai) in March 2012. The data on moisture content (%), clean anhydrous weed/salt ratio, and carrageenan yield obtained in this study fulfilled those of international standards. Further, the results indicated that large-scale cultivation by either NGOs or self-help groups (SHGs) may be taken up along the coastal waters for the benefit of the poverty-stricken coastal people as their livelihood, as the growth rate obtained in this study compared well with that recommended for commercial cultivation elsewhere.  相似文献

Kappaphycus alvarezii is one of the most important commercial sources of carrageenan. Red seaweeds are found in tropical areas, and K. alvarezii is famous for its high growth rate among other tropical red seaweeds. This study was conducted to produce Kapparazii powderTM, a product comprised of high amount of carrageenan with valuable nutrients from K. alvarezii found in Sabah, Malaysia. Spray drying and an environmentally friendly process without using chemicals were employed to produce Kapparazii powderTM. Physicochemical properties of Kapparazii powderTM such as proximate composition (moisture, protein, lipid, ash, and crude fiber), mineral content, heavy metals, vitamins, amino acid, color, viscosity, gel strength, swelling capacity, and water and oil holding capacity were evaluated. Kapparazii powderTM contained moisture (4.69?±?0.03 %), protein (5.11?±?0.02 %), lipid (1.00?±?0.02 %), ash (14.52?±?0.01 %), and crude fiber (0.93?±?0.02 %). Color analysis of Kapparazii powderTM showed that lightness (L *)?=?89.51?±?0.02, redness (a *)?=??1.27?±?0.03, and yellowness (b*)?=?5.49?±?0.02. The value of viscosity, gel strength, swelling capacity, and water and oil holding capacity of the Kapparazii powderTM were 0.06?±?0.00 Pa.s, 82.77?±?3.66 gf, 100?±?0.00 mL.g?1, 4.67?±?0.58 g.g?1, and 5.11?±?0.36 g.g?1, respectively. Moreover, Kapparazii powderTM did not inhibit proliferation of L929 cells after 24 h of exposure at the highest concentration (2 mg.mL?1). In conclusion, the Kapparazii powderTM as a source of high nutrient hydrocolloid suggested on the point of healthy ingredient for food industry application.  相似文献

This study evaluated the potential use of several Thai seaweed species for ethanol production. The high biomass of the green algae Ulva intestinalis and Rhizoclonium riparium and the red algae Gracilaria salicornia and Gracilaria tenuistipitata in an earthen pond culture led us to select these species for our study. The seaweed species were analyzed for chemical composition, resulting in ash contents of 37.62?±?0.15 % and fiber of 11.93?±?0.16 %, with the highest values in R. riparium. Low lipid values were found in all species, with the highest value (p?<?0.05) in G. salicornia (1.69?±?0.07 %) and the lowest in R. riparium (0.28?±?0.01 %) and G. tenuistipitata (0.26?±?0.01 %). The highest carbohydrate contents were found in G. tenuistipitata (54.89 %), and the lowest were in R. riparium (29.53 %). G. tenuistipitata (8.58?±?0.36 %) and U. intestinalis (8.24?±?0.28 %) had higher sulfate contents compared with G. salicornia (4.69?±?0.04 %) and R. riparium (1.97?±?0.20 %). The monosugar algal tissue components were analyzed by HPLC; rhamnose, xylose, fucose, arabinose, mannose, glucose, and galactose were used as reference sugars. Total sugar was found to be highest in G. tenuistipitata (98.21 %). Arabinose, glucose, and galactose were the main sugar components in all species. Glucose obtained from G. tenuistipitata (6.55 %) and R. riparium (6.52 %) was higher than in G. salicornia (0.27 %) and U. intestinalis (2.78 %). The marine red alga Gracilaria crassa was investigated for its proximate composition, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, and agar content to decipher its nutritional implications. The growth performance and pigments were studied under different combinations of temperature and salinity. On a dry weight basis the total lipid content was 1.30?±?0.05 %, protein was 5.18?±?0.64 %, carbohydrate was 42.0?±?1.2 %, ash was 43.18?±?1.15 %, and agar content was 21.52?±?0.73 %. Appreciable amounts of macro-, micro-nutrients (K?>?Na, Ca, Mg, and Fe), and essential amino acids (Ileu, His, Thr, Leu, and Lys) were found. Palmitic, stearic acid, and arachidonic acid were major fatty acids detected. The alga showed maximum daily growth rate (DGR %) 5.8?±?0.09 % at 25 °C, 35 ‰ salinity. The highest content of pigment R-phycoerythrin (444.7?±?1.9 μg g?1 fresh weight (FW) basis) was obtained at 25 ‰ salinity at 35 °C while that of R-phycocyanin (476.3?±?2.3 μg g?1 DW) at 30 ‰ salinity at 30 °C. This study revealed that this alga can be utilized as a potential source for food and feed. The data generated on best growth conditions will be very useful for farming of G. crassa in open sea. Seaweeds, particularly species of red macroalgae, are promising resources for bioethanol production because of their exceptionally high carbohydrate content. Of 20 seaweeds evaluated, Palmaria palmata (Rhodymenia palmata) contained the highest carbohydrate content (469.8 mg g?1 seaweed) with a carrageenan content of 354 mg g?1 seaweed. Such a high carrageenan content makes the high-volume production of bioethanol feasible. Acid hydrolysis of P. palmata in 0.4 M H2SO4 at 125 °C for 25 min released 27 mg of glucose, 218.4 mg of reducing sugars, and 127.6 mg of galactose per gram of seaweed. Ethanol fermentation of these hydrolysis products using an inoculum concentration of 1.5 mg mL?1 at 30 °C and 72 h in a shaking incubator at 130 rpm yielded 17.3 mg of ethanol per gram of seaweed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between preeclampsia and iodine levels and magnesium concentration in the blood of subjects in the northeast Anatolia region where iodine deficiency is common. Blood specimens were obtained from 24 preeclamptic and 16 healthy pregnant women. Iodine levels in blood were determined by the Foss method based on the Sandell–Kolthoff reaction. Serum protein-bound iodine (PBI) levels and magnesium concentration in maternal blood were lower in patients with severe preeclampsia compared to normal pregnant women (8.46?±?1.22 vs. 11.46?±?1.71 μg/dL, p?<?0.001, 1.63?±?0.05 vs. 1.86?±?0.05 mg/dL, p?<?0.001, respectively). Serum PBI levels and magnesium concentration in umbilical cord blood were higher in patients with severe preeclampsia than in normal pregnant women (8.84?±?1.9 vs. 7.33?±?1.07 μg/dL, p?<?0.05, 2.48?±?0.03 vs. 2.02?±?0.01 mg/dL, p?<?0.001, respectively). There was a positive correlation between the serum PBI levels in maternal blood and magnesium concentration in maternal blood in patients with severe preeclampsia (r?=?0.41, p?<?0.05). Thus, iodine may be one factor contributing to the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Iodine supplementation may be effective therapy in preeclamptic in pregnant women.  相似文献

Respiration and calcification rate were estimated to quantify the effect of Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri on marine CO2 system in Sanggou Bay, China. The C. farreri population in Sanggou Bay sequestered 78.06?±?5.76 g C m?2 y?1 for shell formation, while the CO2 fluxes due to calcification and respiration were 53.95?±?3.98 and 71.69?±?6.51 g C m?2 y?1, respectively. In order to eliminate the additional CO2 released from calcification and respiration process of C. farreri, Gracilaria lemaneiformis were introduced into the integrated system and its role was validated by in situ mesocosm methods. Eight mesocosms (1,000 L) were deployed over 42-h period and consisted of four treatments: seaweed-only, scallop-only (SP), seaweed integrated with scallop (SS), and control (C). The aqueous CO2 concentration and partial pressure of CO2 in SP treatments were significantly higher than the other three treatments (p?<?0.01), while there were no difference between SS treatments and C treatments (p?>?0.05). Furthermore, compared with the SP treatments, the presence of the G. lemaneiformis can keep the seawater pH stable. These findings suggest that seaweed and shellfish integrated aquaculture practice cannot only reduce dissolved inorganic carbon but also can alleviate ocean acidification.  相似文献

Gigartina skottsbergii is a red seaweed used as raw material for extracting carrageenans, constituting an important economic resource for Chile. In 2009, extraction in the Magellan region reached 15,064 t. The growing demand has adversely affected the sustainability of natural beds, creating an interest in the culture of this resource. In order to provide information relevant to the culture and regeneration of this seaweed, the present study addresses the effects of different light intensities on the growth of G. skottsbergii gametophytes and tetrasporophytes during the early stages of development. Mature reproductive fronds were induced to release spores in the laboratory by a drying process. Gametophytes cultured at different light intensities showed an increase in diameter, which reached 519.13?±?108.95 μm with 4 μmol photons m?2 s?1, while tetrasporophytes showed a greater increase in diameter, reaching 714.11?±?116.45 μm with 8 μmol photons m?2 s?1. Results indicate that both stages of the reproductive cycle are influenced by different light intensities within a limited range. The farming of shrimp is developing quickly worldwide, and recently, ingredients such as seaweeds in low proportion (25 to 4 %), incorporated into the commercial food, have been shown to improve the shrimp productive variables. The change of commercial foods to commercial feed with a proportion of natural food, and finally, to natural food has been little and simultaneously evaluated. The aim of our study was to determine the relative contribution of dietary carbon to the growth of Litopenaeus vannamei fed with a proportion of 4 % Sargassum13C = ?20.9?±?0.05?‰), 4 % Ulva13C = ?20.6?±?0.6?‰) meal, and a control diet (δ13C?=??22.6?±?0.2?‰) in 60-L tanks for 30 days, and finally, with the green seaweed Ulva spp. (δ13C = ?13.2?±?0.25?‰) and Ulva meal (δ13C = ?14.5?±?0.6?‰) in open-air ponds for 120 days, by measuring δ13C for each of the foods and in the muscle of shrimp. After 15 days, the rates of metabolic turnover (Δ13C = δ13Cshrimp ? δ13Cfood) were constant until the end of the experiment in the tanks. The muscle of shrimp assimilated carbon from all diets, which demonstrated the potential use of combined diets and the optimization of their use in diets containing seaweed. Our data will be useful in future interpretations of field and laboratory isotopic values for this species.  相似文献

Hypericum hookerianum is a lesser known ethnomedicinal plant having wound healing, antitumor and anti-HSV-1 properties. Isolated nodes of in vitro shoots sub-cultured in the dark for 4 weeks on half strength Murashige and Skoog medium solidified with Gelzan (1.5 g l?1), and supplemented with 2.325 μM kinetin produced 8.0 ± 0.40 etiolated shoots of 5.0 ± 0.62 cm length at 74 % efficiency versus 9.2 ± 0.6 healthy shoots of 4.4 ± 0.5 cm obtained from nodes in light at 96 % efficiency. Low concentrations of hypericin were found in wild plant [0.35 ± 0.09 mg g?1 dry weight (DW)] and control green shoot cultures (0.91 ± 0.03 mg g?1 DW). Etiolated shoots exposed to a 12 h photoperiod (50 μmol m?2 s?1) through 1–25 days turned red incrementally due to synthesis and accumulation of 0.1–3.83 mg g?1 DW hypericin in sub-epidermal cortical cells of the stem and varied shaped cells of the distorted mesophyll. Flavonoid and anthocyanin concentrations of the etiolated shoots subjected to the 12 h photoperiod were 3–5 fold higher than the control shoot cultures while total chlorophylls [1.97 ± 0.05 mg g?1 fresh weight (FW)] of the light exposed shoots were significantly less compared to the control (2.86 ± 0.18 mg g?1 FW) and natural plant (6.82 ± 0.29 mg g?1 FW). HPLC analysis of shoot extracts revealed the presence of 0.14 ± 0.03, 0.16 ± 0.02 and 1.45 ± 0.16 mg g?1 DW hyperforin in wild plant, control shoot cultures and etiolated shoot cultures illuminated for 25 days, respectively. Despite a reasonable presence in etiolated shoots (0.61 ± 0.15 g?1 FW), total phenols did not increase significantly during illumination. The results indicate light induced synthesis of anti-depressant phenolic derivatives (hypericin, hyperforin and flavonoids) in etiolated shoot cultures of H. hookerianum.  相似文献

Value-added abalone Haliotis discus hannai containing bioactive phlorotannins is produced by simply changing the feed to phlorotannin-rich brown seaweed Ecklonia cava 2 weeks prior to harvesting. We assessed the accumulation of phlorotannins by feeding with the seaweed after 4 days of starvation. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography afforded isolation of the major phlorotannins, which were identified by mass spectrometry and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance to be 7-phloroeckol and eckol. Throughout the E. cava feeding period of 20 days, 7-phloroeckolol accumulated in the flesh (foot muscle tissue), up to 0.85?±?0.21 mg g?1 dry weight of tissue after 12 days. Eckol reached 0.31?±?0.08 mg g?1 dry tissue after 14 days. Feeding Laminaria japonica as a control, we detected no phlorotannins in the abalone muscle tissue. Abalone seaweed consumption and growth rate were similar when fed with E. cava or L. japonica for 20 days. Reduction in phlorotannins to half-maximal accumulation took 1.0 and 2.7 days for 7-phloroeckol and eckol, respectively, after replacement of the feed with L. japonica.  相似文献

Seaweed cultivation is imperative to augment increasing industrial demand. Ulva fasciata Delile is a potential seaweed for cultivation with applications in food industries. There is a renewed interest in large-scale aquaculture of this species in India due to its envisaged demand in snack food products. In the present study, we have successfully demonstrated the possibility of inducing zoospores in vegetative tissue, effective regeneration and improved growth in this seaweed by manipulating salinity (from 15 to 30 psu) and temperature (from 15 to 35°C). The optimum salinity and temperature requirement for zoospores induction were found to be 15 psu and 25°C, respectively. The quadriflagellate zoospores showed negative phototaxis and the settlement and germination pattern similar to several other green seaweeds. The optimum regeneration (78.53?±?10.05%) was recorded at 25°C and 30 psu salinity. The maximum daily growth rate (16.1?±?0.28%) was at 25°C and 30 psu salinity which corresponded to the field conditions. This method could be further refined at nursery culture to achieve artificial seeding essential for the success of commercial cultivation of this seaweed.  相似文献

Grateloupia asiatica is an edible seaweed and source of carrageenan in Korea. Considering the economic importance of this edible seaweed, mass culturing methods from spores have been conducted. Moreover, it helps prevent natural population depletion. Spores germinate to form crusts, filaments and spherical structures that subsequently differentiate and develop into thalli. The objective of our research was to study the developmental pattern of crust into upright thalli. Vegetative cells of crust divided circularly to expand and coalescence with other crusts, while those cells that divide vertically increase the thickness of the crust. The specific growth rate of the crusts was optimal at 20 °C (8.6 % day?1) and 42 μmol photons m?2 s?1 (10.8 % day?1). At optimum condition, they grew in regularity that forming pattern of zonation and circular mounds onto the crusts subsequently produce upright thalli. Thalli would be generated if the crusts, generally composed of six cells in thickness, will start to produce cortical and medulla cells to support and generate upright thalli. In the tank culture, the upright thalli grew rapidly during July to October and reached a maximum length of around ±5.2 cm. The thalli matured and contained many carposporangia in the branches after 150 culture days.  相似文献

Gas liquid chromatography, chemical analyses, and infrared and13C-NMR spectroscopies indicated that phycocolloids extracted fromAgardhiella subulata had a dominant ι-carrageenan feature with less deviant ι-carrageenan and υ-carrageenan. The presence of methylated galactose and a small contamination by xylose were registered. Unattached plants were cultivated for 4 weeks in tanks receiving seawater enriched with 53.5 µM nitrate and 0 to 20 µM phosphate (Pi) week?1. The growth was phosphorus (P)-limited up to a tissue P content of 0.14 ± 0.03% dry weight. Maximal specific growth rate and carrageenan content were observed with enrichments of 6 µM Pi and 3 µM Pi, respectively. Hence carrageenan production was promoted in the range of 3–6 µM Pi. Further Pi enrichment was useless. This phenomenon, observed with P nutrition, is comparable to the ‘Neish effect’ in nitrogen nutrition studies.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine the concentration of serum trace and other essential elements of generalized anxiety disorder patients and to find out the relationship between element levels and nutritional status or socioeconomic factors. The study was conducted among 50 generalized anxiety disorder patients and 51 healthy volunteers. Patients were selected and recruited in the study with the help of a clinical psychologist by random sampling. The concentrations of serum trace elements (Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe) and other two essential elements (Ca and Mg) were determined by graphite furnace and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Data were analyzed by independent t test, Pearson’s correlation analysis, regression analysis, and analysis of variance. The serum concentrations of Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ca, and Mg in generalized anxiety disorder patients were 1.069?±?0.40, 1.738?±?0.544, 1.374?±?0.750, 3.203?±?2.065, 108.65?±?54.455, and 21?±?4.055 mg/L, while those were 1.292?±?0.621, 0.972?±?0.427, 0.704?±?0.527, 1.605?±?1.1855, 101.849?±?17.713, and 21.521?±?3.659 mg/L in control subjects. Significantly decreased (p?<?0.05) serum Zn concentration was found in the patient group compared to the control group while serum level of Cu, Mn, and Fe was significantly (p?<?0.05) higher, but the differences of the concentration of Ca and Mg between the patient and control groups were not significant (p?>?0.05). Socioeconomic data revealed that most of the patients were in the lower middle class group and middle-aged. Mean BMI of the control group (23.63?±?3.91 kg/m2) and the patient group (23.62?±?3.77 kg/m2) was within the normal range (18.5–25.0 kg/m2). The data obtained from different interelement relations in the generalized anxiety disorder patients and control group strongly suggest that there is a disturbance in the element homeostasis. So changes in the serum trace element level in generalized anxiety disorder patients occur independently and they may provide a prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.  相似文献

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of chromium intake on glycemic control, markers of cardio-metabolic risk, and oxidative stress in infertile polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) women candidate for in vitro fertilization (IVF). This randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was done among 40 subjects with infertile PCOS candidate for IVF, aged 18–40 years old. Individuals were randomly allocated into two groups to take either 200 μg/day of chromium (n?=?20) or placebo (n?=?20) for 8 weeks. Biochemical parameters were assessed at baseline and at end-of-trial. Compared with the placebo, taking chromium supplements led to significant reductions in fasting plasma glucose (??2.3?±?5.7 vs. +?0.9?±?3.1 mg/dL, P?=?0.03), insulin levels (??1.4?±?2.1 vs. +?0.4?±?1.7 μIU/mL, P?=?0.004), homeostatic model of assessment for insulin resistance (??0.3?±?0.5 vs. +?0.1?±?0.4, P?=?0.005), and a significant increase in quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (+?0.004?±?0.008 vs. ??0.001?±?0.008, P?=?0.03). In addition, chromium supplementation significantly decreased serum triglycerides (??19.2?±?33.8 vs. +?8.3?±?21.7 mg/dL, P?=?0.004), VLDL- (??3.8?±?6.8 vs. +?1.7?±?4.3 mg/dL, P?=?0.004) and total cholesterol concentrations (??15.3?±?26.2 vs. ??0.6?±?15.9 mg/dL, P?=?0.03) compared with the placebo. Additionally, taking chromium supplements was associated with a significant increase in plasma total antioxidant capacity (+?153.9?±?46.1 vs. ??7.8?±?43.9 mmol/L, P?<?0.001) and a significant reduction in malondialdehyde values (?0.3?±?0.3 vs. +?0.1?±?0.2 μmol/L, P?=?0.001) compared with the placebo. Overall, our study supported that chromium administration for 8 weeks to infertile PCOS women candidate for IVF had beneficial impacts on glycemic control, few variables of cardio-metabolic risk, and oxidative stress.  相似文献
