Why some leaves are anthocyanic and why most anthocyanic leaves are red?   总被引:10,自引:1,他引:9
Yiannis Manetas 《Flora》2006,201(3):163-177
The adaptive significance of leaf reddening, as it occurs during specific developmental stages or after stress, has puzzled biologists for more than a century. Theoretically, the accumulation of a non-photosynthetic pigment competing with chlorophylls for photon capture would impose a photosynthetic cost, which should be paid off by the benefits afforded by anthocyanins under some circumstances. Hence, the proposed hypotheses presume protective functions against excess light, UV-B radiation, reactive oxygen species, water stress (osmoregulation) and herbivory. The existing arguments in favor of an anti-oxidant, anti-UV-B and osmoregulatory role are confounded by the co-occurrence in leaves of other compounds having the same properties, not absorbing visible light, attaining much higher concentrations and, in some cases, having a more appropriate location to fulfill the ascribed functions. Moreover, the excess light hypothesis should take into account that anthocyanins mainly absorb green photons, which are used photosynthetically in deeper cell layers needing less photoprotection. The more ecological, anti-herbivore hypotheses, consider red leaf color as a signal denoting high defensive commitment, as a camouflage obscuring the green reflectance indicative of a healthy leaf and/or as a device undermining the folivorous insects camouflage. The anti-herbivore hypotheses have not been thoroughly tested, yet they are compatible with the known optical preferences of insects and their underlying physiology. Overall, although a multiplicity of potential roles can be argued, the primary role may depend on the reference system, i.e. species, developmental stage or specific biotic and abiotic stressors.  相似文献

At irradiances close to those representing a sunny day, red and green leaves of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) showed only minor differences in their photosynthetic capacities despite the strong differences in their pigment composition. However, contrarily to green leaves, red leaves did not show inhibition of photosynthesis at high irradiances, because anthocyanins protected chloroplasts from photoinhibition.  相似文献

The well-known deceleration of nitrogen (N) cycling in the soil resulting from addition of large amounts of foliar condensed tannins may require increased fine-root growth in order to meet plant demands for N. We examined correlations between fine-root production, plant genetics, and leaf secondary compounds in Populus angustifolia, P. fremontii, and their hybrids. We measured fine-root (<2mm) production and leaf chemistry along an experimental genetic gradient where leaf litter tannin concentrations are genetically based and exert strong control on net N mineralization in the soil. Fine-root production was highly correlated with leaf tannins and individual tree genetic composition based upon genetic marker estimates, suggesting potential genetic control of compensatory root growth in response to accumulation of foliar secondary compounds in soils. We suggest, based on previous studies in our system and the current study, that genes for tannin production could link foliar chemistry and root growth, which may provide a powerful setting for external feedbacks between above- and belowground processes.  相似文献

Estimation of radionuclide concentrations in trees may be required to estimate their radiation exposure. However, concentration ratios of radionuclides from soil to tree species are limited for many radionuclide-tree combinations. To fill this gap, it is investigated in the present paper whether stable element concentration data for leafy vegetables are representative of those for wild tree leaves, and consequently, if these stable element data for leafy vegetables can be used as analogues to describe radionuclides transfer from soil to trees. Data for stable elements in leafy vegetables collected in Japan were compared with those in leaves of about 20 tree species worldwide. The correlation coefficients of element concentrations between leafy vegetables and tree leaves were higher than 0.90 with p < 0.001 by Student’s t test, and geometric means of concentration data for most elements were within the range of data for leafy vegetables. Thus, transfer parameters derived from stable element data for leafy vegetables could generally be used to estimate concentrations in tree leaves if data for the latter are not available. However, some trees accumulate a few elements (e.g., Al, Co, Mn and Si) in their leaves to higher concentrations than observed for leafy vegetables.  相似文献

Are fast growing birch leaves more asymmetrical?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mikhail V. Kozlov 《Oikos》2003,101(3):654-658
Two recent papers (Martel et al. 1999, Lempa et al. 2000), linked rapid leaf growth in birches with high level of developmental instability, measured by leaf fluctuating asymmetry (FA). I discuss methodological approaches used in the referred papers and conclude that none of them provided incontrovertible support for the hypothesis on positive correlation between FA and leaf growth rate. A field study designed to test this hypothesis by an independent data set revealed no correlation between FA and either relative or absolute leaf growth rate in mountain birch either in within-tree or in between-tree comparisons. Character of the relationships between FA and growth may change with the index used to quantify developmental instability.  相似文献

Does lateral gas diffusion in leaves matter?   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Photosynthesis depends on the diffusion of gaseous CO(2) inside the leaf spaces from the stomatal entry point to the mesophyll cell walls. Although most research considers only the vertical diffusion from stomata on upper and/or leaf lower surfaces, some of the gas will diffuse in the lateral (paradermal) direction. The importance of lateral CO(2) diffusion is reviewed, and the anatomical characteristics of leaves, including the variation of air space volume between species and conditions are discussed. The contribution of the air space conductance to the limitation of photosynthesis by the overall CO(2) diffusion pathway is usually ignored. However, the need to consider three-dimensional diffusion at the small scale of a few stomata is emphasized because stomata are discrete, and separated by 20-300 microm. At the large scale of 100s of micrometres, there may be barriers to CO(2) caused by the vascular tissue, particularly if there are bundle sheath extensions. The possible extent and controls on CO(2) lateral and vertical diffusion in different species and conditions are illustrated using chlorophyll a fluorescence imaging techniques. It is clear that there is a range of effective lateral permeabilities depending on the particular vascular patterns and cell arrangements, and that species cannot be simply divided into homobaric and heterobaric anatomies. Lateral diffusion in more permeable leaves can be sufficient to affect measurements of leaf gas exchange, particularly when fluxes are low, although its contribution to leaf photosynthesis in natural conditions needs clarification.  相似文献

Plant β-glucosidases catalyze the hydrolysis of glycosidic linkages and play a vital role in defense against pathogens and stress. The present work investigated the relationship between leaf development and β-glucosidase protein content in Olea europea L. (cv. Picual) leaves. The total chlorophyll content increased with leaf age in current-season leaves. Immunoblot analysis revealed that the content of 61 kD protein of β-glucosidase also increased with leaf age, and that the enzyme existed in three isoforms (pI 5.8–6.2). Statistical analysis indicated a strong correlation between chlorophyll and β-glucosidase protein contents.  相似文献

A rare secocarotenoid, semi-β-carotenone, has been isolated from young leaves of Ceratozamia fuscoviridis (a form of C. mexicana Brongn.) and of C. kuesteriana. This is the first time that this carotenoid has been obtained from photosynthetic tissue. New data on the chromatographic behaviour and on the spectroscopic properties of the carotenoid are presented.  相似文献

Does light inhibit ethylene production in leaves?   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
The effect of light on the rate of ethylene production was monitored using two different techniques—leaf segments incubated in closed flasks versus intact plants in a flow-through open system. Three different plants were used, viz sunflower (Helianthus annuus), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), and soybean (Glycine max). Experiments were conducted both in the presence and absence of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC).

The results obtained indicate that, in all three species studied, light strongly inhibits ethylene production when cut leaf segments are incubated in the presence of ACC in closed flasks. When ethylene measurements are made with ACC-sprayed intact plants using a continuous flow system, the effect of light on ethylene production is only marginal. In leaf segments of sunflower and soybean incubated only in distilled H2O in closed flasks, light promotes ethylene production. In tomato, there is no difference between the rate of ethylene production between light and darkness under such conditions. When measurements are made with intact plants in a continuous flow system, the rate of ethylene production is almost identical in light and darkness, in the three plants studied.

It is concluded that the effect of light on cut leaf segments incubated in the presence of ACC in closed flasks can be attributed to the techniques used for these measurements. Light has little effect on ethylene production by intact plants in an open system.

What do red and yellow autumn leaves signal?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The widespread phenomenon of red and yellow autumn leaves has recently attracted considerable scientific attention. The fact that this phenomenon is so prominent in the cooler, temperate regions and less common in warmer climates is a good indication of a climate-specific effect. In addition to the putative multifarious physiological benefits, such as protection from photoinhibition and photo-oxidation, several plant/animal interaction functions for such coloration have been proposed. These include (1) that the bright leaf colors may signal frugivores about ripe fruits (fruit flags) to enhance seed dispersal; (2) that they signal aphids that the trees are well defended (a case of Zahavi’s handicap principle operating in plants); (3) that the coloration undermines herbivore insect camouflage; (4) that they function according to the “defense indication hypothesis,” which states that red leaves are chemically defended because anthocyanins correlate with various defensive compounds; or (5) that because sexual reproduction advances the onset of leaf senescence, the pigments might indicate to sucking herbivores that the leaves have low amounts of resources. Although the authors of hypotheses 3, 4, and 5 did not say that bright autumn leaves are aposematic, since such leaves are chemically defended, unpalatable, or both, we suggest that they are indeed aposematic. We propose that in addition to the above-mentioned hypotheses, autumn colors signal to herbivorous insects about another defensive plant property: the reliable, honest, and critical information that the leaves are about to be shed and may thus cause their mortality. We emphasize that all types of defensive and physiological functions of autumn leaves may operate simultaneously.  相似文献

Why are evergreen leaves so contrary about shade?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Leaf mass per area (LMA) is one of the most widely measured of all plant functional traits. In deciduous forests, there is similarity between plastic and evolutionary responses of LMA to light gradients. In evergreens, however, LMA is lower in shaded than sunlit individuals of the same species, whereas shade-tolerant evergreens have higher LMA than light-demanders grown under the same conditions. We suggest that this pattern of 'counter-gradient variation' results from some combination of (i) close evolutionary coordination of LMA with leaf lifespan, (ii) selection for different leaf constitutions (relative investment in cell walls versus cell contents) in sun and shade environments and/or (iii) constraints on plasticity as a result of genetic correlations between phenotypes expressed in sun and shade.  相似文献

Purified anthocyanin extracts show strong antioxidant properties in vitro, but it is not known whether they can scavenge reactive oxygen in living cells. The oxidative responses in red and green portions of Pseudowintera colorata leaf laminae were compared by the real‐time imaging of H2O2 in cells after mechanical injury. An oxidative burst was elicited almost immediately from chloroplasts in the palisade mesophyll, as evidenced using the fluorochromes dichlorofluorescein and scopoletin. H2O2 accumulated in green lamina regions for 10 min, and then decreased slowly. By contrast, red regions recovered rapidly, and maintained consistently low levels of H2O2. Infusion of cells with N‐acetyl‐l ‐cysteine accelerated the depletion of H2O2 from green regions. Wounded leaves ultimately developed a localized necrotic lesion and an intense anthocyanic band. The red regions were enriched in anthocyanins, flavonols, dihydroflavonols, and hydroxycinnamic acids. Only the anthocyanins were suitably located to account for the enhanced rates of H2O2 scavenging. The data support the hypothesis that red cells have elevated antioxidant capabilities in vivo.  相似文献

A water extract of the leaves of Suregada glomerulata (Euphorbiaceae) was found to inhibit rat small intestinal α-glucosidase. An examination of the extract afforded 20 iminosugars including one pyrrolidine and 19 piperidines. The structures of the 10 new compounds (1120) were determined by NMR, and MS spectroscopic data analyses, and chemical correlations. The novelty of the identified compounds mainly stems from the loss of a hydroxy at C-4 and the presence of an 8-hydroxyoctyl side chain. Nine N-alkyl derivatives including N-methyl (1a, 8a, and 13a), N-butyl (1b, 2b, and 9b) and N,N-dimethyl (1c, 2c, and 9c) were synthesized. The compounds were tested for rat small intestinal α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. In total, 15 compounds, including compounds 11, 12, 15, and 19 and the three derivatives 8a, 9b, and 13a, showed inhibitory activity with IC50 values less than 40 μM. In vivo results showed that total alkaloids of S. glomerulata (10 mg/kg) and four major iminosugars 1, 2, 3, and 9 (10 mg/kg) can lower the postprandial blood glucose level after sucrose and starch load in healthy male ICR mice.  相似文献

The non-chloroplastic -glucan phosphorylase (EC 2.4.1.1) from spinach leaves has been purified to homogeneity as revealed by dodecylsulfate gel electrophoresis. Both purification and separation from the chloroplastic phosphorylase were achieved by chromatography on Sepharose-bound dextrin. The chloroplastic phosphorylase did not bind to Sepharose-dextrin and was removed from the column by washing with buffer, as verified by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the buffer eluate and by chromatography of a preparation from isolated intact chloroplasts. The non-chloroplastic phosphorylase did bind to a high extent to Sepharose-dextrin and could be eluted by a dextrin gradient. Based on dodecylsulfate gel electrophoresis and pyridoxal phosphate determination, a molecular weight of about 90,000 was found for the monomer. Molecular-weight determination by porosity density gradient electrophoresis and gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 suggested that the native enzyme is a dimer, as are other phosphorylases.Abbreviations DEAE diethylaminoethyl - EDTA ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid - G1P glucose 1-phosphate - HEPES N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N-2-ethanesulphonic acid - PMSF phenylmethyl sulphonyl fluoride - SDS sodium dodecylsulfate - Tris Tris (hydroxymethyl)aminomethane Dedicated to Professor Dr. A. Roots of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) seedlings contained only a very low activity of adenosine 5-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase compared to the cotyledons. Adenosine 5-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase activity increased about tenfold in cotyledons during greening. Preparation of organelle fractions from spinach leaves by a combination of differential and isopycnic density gradient centrifugation showed that adenosine 5-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase banded with NADP-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, a marker enzyme for intact chloroplasts. In the fractions of peroxisomes, mitochondria and broken chloroplasts virtually no adenosine 5-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase activity was measured. Comparison with the chloroplast enzyme NADP-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase indicates that in spinach, adenosine 5-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase is localized almost exclusively in the chloroplasts.Abbreviations APS Adenosine 5-phosphosulfate - APSSTase Adenosine 5-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase - BSA Bovine serum albumin - BRIJ58 Polyethylene glycolmonostearylether - DTE Dithioerythritol - DTT Dithiothreitol - EDTA Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid - ME 2-Mercaptoethanol - NADP-GPD NADP-linked glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase - PAPS Adenosine 3-phosphate 5-phosphate 5-phosphosulfate - POPOP 1,4 Di [2-(5-phenyloxazolyl)]-benzene - PPO 2,5-Diphenyloxazol The results presented in this paper are taken from the Ph. Many species of insects eat Eucalyptus foliage despite its relatively low nutritional value and the many plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) present, for example, terpenes, phenols and formylated phloroglucinols (FPGs). Formylated phloroglucinols are a new class of PSMs that act as antifeedants for possums and koalas. What physiological processes are present that permit insects to eat eucalypt foliage and how do PSMs influence insect feeding or digestion? Some trees seem to be repeatedly infested with eucalypt‐feeding insects, possibly as a result of previous chemosensory cues remaining from parental selection of a plant. Avoidance or storage of PSMs permit jarrah leafminers (Perthida glyphopa) and sawflies (Perga sp.) to consume eucalypt foliage without dealing with the majority of these compounds. Some PSMs can be metabolized by polysubstrate membrane oxidases as found in caterpillars or sawflies that feed on eucalypts. High midgut pH may be advantageous for nutrient extraction and PSM metabolism, and midgut pH ranges between 8.5 and 8.9 for caterpillars of Hyalarcta huebneri. Plant secondary metabolites may not be absorbed as a result of the combined presence of the peritrophic matrix and endogenous surfactants. Excretion of PSMs can be as metabolites or intact compounds. Both putative metabolites and sideroxylonal‐A, an FPG, are present in the faeces of larvae of the case moth, H. huebneri. The presence of sideroxylonal‐A in the food had an effect on the presence of 5‐hydroxytryptamine (5HT) in the central nervous system of caterpillars, as larvae fed leaves with a high concentration of sideroxylonal‐A had relatively more 5HT in the brain and central nervous system ganglia than larvae fed leaves containing a low concentration. Further work is necessary to clarify how PSMs are handled by eucalypt‐feeding insects and what effect FPGs have on feeding and digestion.  相似文献

Root treatments of barley (Hordeum distichum L.) plants with 10-7 to 10-4 M abscisic acid (ABA) caused an increase in proline content, especially at higher concentrations, within 2–3 h. Even 3 h after the removal of ABA from the medium the plants continued to accumulate proline. The higher the concentration of the ABA, the higher was the proline level at 6 h. When the highest ABA concentration, 10-4 M, was tested with polyethylene glycol (PEG) (-5.0 bars) in the medium, the ABA treatment resulted in a higher proline content than in control plants. The treatments PEG alone and PEG + ABA resulted in heavy accumulation of proline, especially, 3 h after releasing the plants from the stress. The proline content in PEG+ABA-treated plants was always higher than plants treated with PGE or ABA alone. In peas (Pisum sativum L. cv Alaska) the same trend occurred although to a lesser degree. These findings indicate an influence of ABA on proline accumulation in water-stressed plants.Abbreviations ABA abscisic acid - PEG polyethylene glycol - RWC relative water content  相似文献
