Phytoplankton biomass and productivity were measured during two cruises in the Bransfield Strait in December 1991 (D91) and January/February 1993 (J93). Strong seasonal variability in productivity values was observed due to differences in the physiological response of phytoplankton. However, although the photosynthetic capacity of phytoplankton was markedly lower in D91 [P m B =0.61 ± 0.25 mg C (mg Chla)−1 h−1] than in J93 [P m B =2.18 ± 0.91 mg C (mg Chla)−1 h−1], average water column chlorophyll values in different areas of the strait were approximately similar in D91 (49–78 mg Chla m−2) and J93 (22–76 mg Chla m−2). The spatial distribution of chlorophyll was patchy and generally associated with the influence of the different water masses that meet together in the Bransfield Strait. No correlation was found between the mixed layer depth and either the integrated chlorophyll or the productivity. Our results suggest that major phytoplankton blooms in the Bransfield Strait are advected from the nearby Gerlache Strait or Bellingshausen Sea following the main eastward surface currents. Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) are recognized to playan important role in the flux of exported carbon to the deepocean. However, there is little information on how TEP standingstocks are affected by different hydrographic conditions andother relevant ecological factors in situ. This lack of knowledgeis particularly serious for the Southern Ocean. During Australsummer 1999, the Strait of Bransfield presented high mesoscalevariability. Two fronts were present, the Bransfield hydrographicfront and a slope front along the South Shetland Islands andseveral mesoscale anticyclonic eddies and/or frontal meanders.The spatial distributions of biological properties were largelyaffected by this complex hydrography. Chlorophyll a (Chl a)(0.05–4.81 µg L–1), TEP (from undetectableto 346 µg GXeq L–1) and heterotrophic bacteria (HB)(1.7–9.4 x 105 cells mL–1) were positively correlateddespite the wide hydrographic heterogeneity of the BransfieldStrait. Higher abundances of autotrophic biomass, and correspondlyhigher TEP and heterotrophic bacteria (HB), were found in themore stratified waters. TEP spatial distribution was mostlyrelated to the abundance of autotrophic biomass although localhigh TEP concentrations were not matched by similarly high valuesof Chl a in some areas where diatoms were relatively abundant.  相似文献

During the research program BENTART 95, carried out from 16 January to 4 February 1995 on board RV Hesperides, a semi-quantitative Agassiz trawl and quantitative Van-Veen grabs were used at 31 subtidal stations between 40 and 850 m depth around Livingston Island, at Deception Island and in the Bransfield Strait. These data were used to search for and analyse the malacological assemblages. Among the molluscs sampled were 1,786 individuals belonging to 70 species of Solenogastres, Gastropoda Prosobranchia and Opisthobranchia, Scaphopoda and Bivalvia. The values of Shannon-Wiener diversity index ranged between 0.00 (one specimen) and 3.95, while Pielou's evenness index varied between 0.0 and 1.00. The bivalve Thyasira cf. dearborni was the most abundant species (227 specimens). Species richness varied from 1 to 19 species. Diversity showed great variations at different stations. The clustering analysis applying the Bray-Curtis coefficient allowed species classification according to constancy and fidelity, and distinguished four groups of stations: one that gathers clearly the stations of the inner bay of Deception Island, excepting station 1, and the other three fitting the remaining stations, located north and south of Livingston Island and in the Bransfield Strait, and correlated with environmental factors (granulometric composition, organic matter and carbonates). Community respiration (R) was determined in Bransfield Straitfrom oxygen changes in water samples incubated in borosilicatebottles maintained at in situ temperature. The respiratory electrontransport system (ETS) activity of seawater communities wasalso measured from the same samples. Both data sets were relatedby the regression equation: log R (mg O2 m–3 day–1)=0.462+0.730xlogETS activity mg O2 m–3 day–1) (r=0.80, n=23). Fromthis equation and 37 ETS activity depth profiles, we calculatedthe integrated (0–100 m) community respiration as beingin the range 1.2–4.5 g O2 m–2 day–1 (mean=2.2).These values do not differ significantly from other publishedresults for the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans. Assuming a respiratoryquotient of unity, the areal respiration ranges between 0.45and 1.69 g C m–2 day–1 (mean=0.8). This would representan important sink for the primary production reported for BransStrait. The spatial distribution of community respiration showedhigher values associated with the warmer and phytoplankton-richwaters outflowing from Gerlache Strait into Bransfield Strait,and with the front that separates Bellingshausen Sea watersfrom Weddell Sea waters. We suggest that this pattern of distributionmay be related to the transport of organic matter by the BransfieldCurrent along the front.  相似文献

Zooplankton biomass (as dry weight), respiration and ammonia excretion were studied in three different size classes (200–500, 500–1000 and >1000 μm) in the Bransfield Strait during December 1991. Average mesozooplankton biomass was 86.45 ± 56.74 mg · dry weight · m−2, which is in the lower range of the values cited in the literature for polar waters. Higher biomass was observed in the Weddell water. The small size fraction accounted for about 50% of total biomass while the largest one represented 35%. Rather high metabolic rates were found, irrespective of whether the organisms were incubated in the presence of food. No significant differences were observed in mass specific respiration and ammonia excretion rates between different temperatures of incubation (0.2–2.3°C) and between the size classes studied. Because of the very low biomass values observed, the metabolic requirements of mesozooplankton during December represented a small fraction of the primary production. Two species of the genus Oswaldella Stechow, 1919 new to science (Oswaldella crassa sp. nov. and O.␣curiosa sp. nov.) were studied. Both species are described and figured; their systematic position amongst the remaining species of the genus is discussed. The material originates from the Bransfield Strait area (Antarctica) and was collected during the United States Antarctic Research Program with R.V. Eltanin. A comparative table listing the main features of the known species of Oswaldella is presented. Recent global warming reduces surface water salinity around the Antarctic Peninsula as a result of the glacial meltwater runoff, which increases the occurrence and abundance of certain phytoplankton groups, such as cryptophytes. The dominance of this particular group over diatoms affects grazers, such as Antarctic krill, which preferentially feed on diatoms. Using three late summer data sets from the Bransfield Strait (2008–2010), we observed variations in the dominant phytoplankton groups determined by HPLC/CHEMTAX pigment analysis and confirmed by microscopy. Results indicate that the dominance of diatoms, particularly in 2008 and 2009, was associated with a deeper upper mixed layer (UML), higher salinity and warmer sea surface temperature. In contrast, cryptophytes, which were dominant in 2010, were associated with a shallower UML, lower salinity and colder sea surface temperatures. The low diatom biomass observed in the summer of 2010 was associated with high nutrient concentration, particularly silicate, and low chlorophyll a (summer monthly average calculated from satellite images). The interannual variability here observed suggests a delayed seasonal succession cycle of phytoplankton in the summer of 2010 associated with a cold summer and a late ice retreat process in the region. This successional delay resulted in a notable decrease of primary producers’ biomass, which is likely to have impacted regional food web interactions. This study demonstrates the susceptibility of the Antarctic phytoplankton community structure to air temperature, which directly influences the timing of ice melting and consequently the magnitude of primary production and succession pattern of phytoplankton groups.  相似文献

A total of 36 species of benthic hydroids, belonging to nine families and 16 genera, were found in the hydroid collection gathered during the Brazilian Antarctic expeditions PROANTAR III and IV. Seven of the species were identified only to generic level. There is a clear dominance of the subclass Leptothecatae with 33 species. By far the most diversified family was the Sertulariidae, with 16 species (44%). Symplectoscyphus with eight species, including Symplectoscyphus magnificus sp. nov., is the most diversified genus. Almost 70% of the species diversity is restricted to just six genera (38%). Sixty-eight percent of the species is Antarctic endemics and 86% is restricted to Antarctic or Antarctic/sub-Antarctic waters. Eudendrium antarcticum and Amphisbetia operculata are recorded for the first time from Antarctic waters.  相似文献

During austral summer 1995 suprabenthic assemblages were investigated at 24 stations located around Livingston Island, Deception Island and Bransfield Strait, at depths ranging from 45 to 650 m. Suprabenthos was collected on R/V Hesperides using a Macer-GIROQ sledge with an automatic opening and closing system. This study presents data on the occurrence and relative abundance of the main suprabenthic groups collected in the water layer immediately adjacent to the bottom (10–140 cm above bottom). Commonest groups were Amphipoda, Mysidacea, Isopoda, Cumacea and Euphausiacea. The distribution and spatial separation in the suprabenthic habitat of the main groups are discussed. Biomass (as dry weight and protein content), gut fluorescence, electron transfer system (ETS) and aspartate transcarbamylase (ATC) activities were studied in different size fractions (200–500, 500–1000 μm and 1–14 mm) in the Bransfield Strait (Antarctic Peninsula) during January 1993. Very low values of zooplankton biomass were observed in all the size classes studied. About 56% of total biomass was due to the large size fraction (1–14 mm) while the smallest one (200–500 μm) accounted for about 26%. Gut fluorescence values increased in relation to the size class considered, as expected, being the differences from the smaller to the highest size fractions of orders of magnitude. Calculated ingestion rates showed that about 60–80% of total zooplankton ingestion (<14 mm) was due to the smaller organisms. Higher average values and higher variability of specific ETS activity was observed in the smaller size fraction while no differences between size classes were observed for the specific ATC activity. Biomass, gut fluorescence, ETS and ATC activities were not significantly different between the Bellingshausen and Weddell waters, although higher standard deviation was normally found at the former area. With the restrictions of using the above indices to estimate physiological rates, potential grazing of mesozooplankton (<14 mm) accounted for a rather low portion (<10%) of the primary production. The index of growth showed high values, suggesting no food limitation of mesozooplankton. Therefore, other processes such as predation should account for the very low biomass found and for the fate of a large portion of primary production. Accepted: 26 March 2000  相似文献

Length-weight relationships are provided for 49 Antarctic fishes from 9 families. The fish were from three research cruises of 1996, 1998 and 2000 to the Weddell Sea and Antarctic Peninsula. Samples were collected by benthopelagic net, Agassiz trawl and bottom trawl at depths of 200–2,300 m. The exponent b in the length-weight relationship W=aL b ranged from 2.53 to 4.05. With a mean of 3.33, 50% of the values ranged between 3.157 and 3.480. In 31 species, the parameters were determined for each sex. For 64.5% of species, b was higher in females than in males. Exceptions were the Channichthyidae where b for six species was higher for males.  相似文献

Summary The depth distribution and composition of residual amino acids was determined in December 1980 in the Bransfield Strait. The major components were aspartic and glutamic acids together with alanine, glycine and serine. Non-protein amino acids were not found in significant amounts. On the average, the amino acids accounted for 25% of the total organic carbon and 50% of the organic nitrogen. Amino acid nitrogen/chlorophyll ratios indicated that in most euphotic zone samples phytoplankton in good physiological condition was present whereas heavily degraded material was found in deeper water layers. Statistical treatment and cluster analysis show distinct differences between euphotic and aphotic zone samples which could be used to characterize phytoplankton communities.  相似文献

A large mass of cast exoskeletons of the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was fished in February 2001 at one station in the Bransfield Strait between 411 and 153 m. We assume that the mass of cast exoskeletons originated from a synchronous moult of thousands of individuals. Depending on the size of the krill moulted, the amount of exoskeletons corresponded to a krill abundance of 1,480–48,000 individuals per 1,000 m3.  相似文献

Summary The study of radiolarians collected during sediment trap experiments in the Drake Passage, the northern Powell Basin, and the King George Basin of the Bransfield Strait provides new information on the fluxes of radiolarian shells in Antarctic waters, on the annual flux pattern, the species distribution and its ecological significance, and on alteration processes of the radiolarian shells in the water column and at the sediment/water interface. A 28-month monitoring with time-series sediment traps in the Bransfield Strait indicates an annual flux pattern characterized by short-term flux pulses during austral summer, which reach daily fluxes of up to 5 × 103 shells m–2 and which account for more than 90% of the total annual flux. The distinct seasonal variations are linked to variations in the sea ice coverage. Other controlling factors are the production of phytoplankton and the impact by zooplankton grazers, e.g., krill. During the summer flux pulses the vertical fluxes of radiolarians range between ca. 3 and 21 × 104 shells m–2, values that are one or more orders of magnitudes lower than fluxes observed at sites in the tropical and northern high-latitude ocean. Significant lateral transport of radiolarians was documented during the austral summer in the Bransfield Strait by a factor of 10 increase of the radiolarian flux in the lower portion of the water column and the species composition trapped in deeper waters. Radiolarian assemblages associated with pelagic and neritic environments characterized by typical Antarctic taxa (Antarctissa spp.) and a group of species with bipolar distribution (e.g. Plectacantha oikiskos, Phormacantha hystrix), respectively, are distinguished. While the signal of polycystine radiolarians is relatively well recorded in the sediments, the shells of phaeodarians, which were observed at fluxes of up to 1 × 103 shells m–2day–1 in the upper portion of the water column, are almost completely dissolved during settling through the water column.  相似文献

The basin off the Bellingshausen Sea, in contrast to other better known areas such as the Antarctic Peninsula and the Ross and Weddell Seas, has been little investigated due to remoteness and the prevalence of ice for most of the year. The present study focuses on an analysis of polychaetes collected from soft bottoms of this sea and off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula (Gerlache Strait) by means of a box-corer (25 × 25 cm) in two intensive surveys carried out during austral summers of 2002–2003 and 2005–2006 (BENTART-03 and BENTART-06). Three different polychaete assemblages were determined from the classification and ordination analyses of sampling stations based on the Bray-Curtis similarity index. One group of stations encompassed the deep stations from the shelf of the Bellingshausen Sea, the second one the shallower stations from the same area and the third one those stations located near the coast of Peter I Island and Gerlache Strait, off the Antarctic Peninsula. The environmental variables involved in segregating these groups were several sedimentary features (redox potential, gravel content) and depth. The present study provides further support to previous ones that considered the shelf of the Bellingshausen Sea as a differentiated region within the Southern Ocean, clearly distinct to the adjacent Weddell and Scott Seas and the Antarctic Peninsula.  相似文献

In the austral summer of 2011 we undertook an investigation of three volcanic highs in the Central Bransfield Basin, Antarctica, in search of hydrothermal activity and associated fauna to assess changes since previous surveys and to evaluate the extent of hydrothermalism in this basin. At Hook Ridge, a submarine volcanic edifice at the eastern end of the basin, anomalies in water column redox potential (Eh) were detected close to the seafloor, unaccompanied by temperature or turbidity anomalies, indicating low-temperature hydrothermal discharge. Seepage was manifested as shimmering water emanating from the sediment and from mineralised structures on the seafloor; recognisable vent endemic fauna were not observed. Pore fluids extracted from Hook Ridge sediment were depleted in chloride, sulfate and magnesium by up to 8% relative to seawater, enriched in lithium, boron and calcium, and had a distinct strontium isotope composition (87Sr/86Sr  = 0.708776 at core base) compared with modern seawater (87Sr/86Sr ≈0.70918), indicating advection of hydrothermal fluid through sediment at this site. Biogeochemical zonation of redox active species implies significant moderation of the hydrothermal fluid with in situ diagenetic processes. At Middle Sister, the central ridge of the Three Sisters complex located about 100 km southwest of Hook Ridge, small water column Eh anomalies were detected but visual observations of the seafloor and pore fluid profiles provided no evidence of active hydrothermal circulation. At The Axe, located about 50 km southwest of Three Sisters, no water column anomalies in Eh, temperature or turbidity were detected. These observations demonstrate that the temperature anomalies observed in previous surveys are episodic features, and suggest that hydrothermal circulation in the Bransfield Strait is ephemeral in nature and therefore may not support vent biota.  相似文献

The Bransfield Strait is a semi-enclosed sea located in the northern part of the West Antarctic Peninsula region, which is subject to strong climatic changes. The bathymetry is complex and comprises three basins that are separated from each other by shallow sills. Oceanographic measurements of the Bransfield Strait region are available since the first half of the twentieth century. In this study, hydrographic data from the ANT-XXIX/3 expedition of RV Polarstern in 2013 are presented to describe the actual physical state of the art, particularly for biological work done during that cruise. The general hydrographic situation of the Bransfield Strait in 2013 is found to be similar to observations from the early twentieth century. The Bransfield Strait’s water masses are modified versions of the water masses from the adjacent seas. The different water masses within the Bransfield Strait are separated by two fronts, the so-called Bransfield and Peninsula Front. While the Bransfield Front is most pronounced in the central and southwestern Bransfield Strait, the Peninsula Front can be identified from the northeastern to the central part of the study domain. Based on an analysis of water mass properties around the Antarctic Peninsula and close to the Antarctic Sound, a notable inflow of Shelf Water from the Weddell Sea through the Antarctic Sound appears unlikely.  相似文献

During the austral summer 1995, the suprabenthic assemblages from 24 stations (45–649 m water depth) located around the South Shetland Islands and in the Bransfield Strait were sampled with a Macer-GIROQ sled. The purpose of this paper is to describe the structure of two main crustacean groups (euphausiids and mysids) in the near-bottom water layers sampled by the sled and to focus on the life history of two dominant mysid species from these areas (Mysidetes posthon and Antarctomysis maxima). The distribution and the main factor structuring populations in the investigated area are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The composition and depth distribution of particulate carbohydrates for 5 stations in the Bransfield Strait is discussed in relation to phytoplankton species composition. Glucose being the most prominent sugar at diatom dominated stations is reduced by 70% from the surface to 100 m depth whereas total carbohydrates show a 40% degradation. The Taylor Group of southern Victoria Land, Antarctica contains varied and abundant trace fossils, which have been interpreted by palaeontologists as indicating marine deposition. However, sedimentologists have largely favoured non-marine deposition on the basis of desiccation polygons, fining upward cycles, unidirectional paleocurrents, small channels, red beds and paleosols.

The debate is reconciled by a reinterpretation of the trace fossil assemblage. It is shown that widespread and well preserved Cruziana, Diplichnites, Rusophycus and Skolithos which have previously been used as marine indicators comprise an ichnofacies (Scoyenia) which is entirely typical of fresh water.  相似文献
