An increasing number of studies describe moving hybrid zones. This raises the issue of their actual frequency and emphasizes the need for methods that enable the detection of zone movements without historical records. Asymmetric introgression, usually considered as a signature of geographical shift, might be misleading when applied to mitochondrial or potentially non-neutral markers. We investigated mitochondrial and genomic introgression, using 30 AFLP derived markers, in a well-documented moving avian contact zone between two warblers. We found no instances of cross-species transmission of mitochondrial DNA but we detected nuclear introgression. Introgression levels were higher in the expanding species. Highest introgression was observed in populations that recently became allopatric than in current sympatric populations, which suggests that alien genetic material mainly spread at the time just before the receding species became extinct. We propose that either local recruitment or positive selection on some loci contribute to this pattern. Furthermore, we propose that, when the rarefaction of sexual partners drive the hybridization process, movement could be revealed by introgression peaking on the rear edge of the moving zone, or in its close vicinity.  相似文献

Disentangling the factors shaping species distributions remains a central goal in biogeography, ecology and evolutionary biology. The extrinsic pressures that may facilitate range shifts, such as climatic factors or biotic interactions are well known. However, in contrast, the possible intrinsic factors are manifold and hard to generalize across taxa. Recently, several theoretical studies have investigated the consequences of moving range borders on genetic diversity. However, empirical studies that support or refute these theoretical predictions are scarce. Moving contact zones between parapatric sister species are suitable models to test these hypotheses. Changes in genetic diversity can be tested simultaneously along the expanding and receding edges of two species of the contact zone while accounting for intra‐specific effects (e.g. introgression). The two Old World warblers Hippolais polyglotta and H. icterina form a narrow moving contact zone, where interspecific interactions are suspected to be the main factor shaping this zone. We investigated the population genetic structure of both species along a transect ranging from the core range of the expanding H. polyglotta across the contact zone and far into the range of the receding H. icterina. The theoretical predictions of changes in genetic diversity at the range edges were tested. No gradual change in genetic diversity was detected for both the expanding and the receding range margin. Furthermore, no genetic structure was found in either species supporting the hypothesis that long distance dispersal (LDD) occurs frequently due to the high mobility of these long‐distance migrants. The results suggest that when dispersal propensity is high and accompanied by frequent LDD events, then neither an enrichment nor a depletion of alleles along moving range edges would be detected. This these species as the probability to retain genetic diversity during exogenous induced range shifts is high in such mobile species.  相似文献

Hybridization between two species typically occurs when allopatric or ecologically dissimilar species expand into areas of secondary contact or habitat transitions. However, as species' ranges shift rapidly in response to environmental change, the potential for novel types of ephemeral hybrid zones exists. Here, we document and describe the occurrence, prevalence and symmetry of a previously undocumented hybrid zone involving two sympatric, ecologically similar sister species that have been expanding their ranges eastward in the central USA: Scissor‐tailed Flycatchers Tyrannus forficatus and Western Kingbirds Tyrannus verticalis. We identified cases of hybridization and introgression using analyses of eight microsatellite DNA loci and a single mitochondrial gene. We also evaluated short‐term reproductive consequences of hybridization for both species by surveying for both species and potential hybrids at the periphery of their ranges in northeastern Arkansas and western Tennessee, USA. Genetic data revealed bi‐directional backcrossing at the periphery of the species’ ranges, including a cryptic hybrid. We also analysed DNA of putative ‘pure’ individuals from other parts of their ranges and detected two cryptic admixed individuals, suggesting backcrossed individuals from the periphery may be dispersing to breed or that hybridization events have occurred in the core. Finally, our results suggest that there are no short‐term reproductive consequences of hybridization for the two species. In total, hybrid zones that occur at the edges of expanding, sympatric ranges may be ephemeral; we suggest they play an important role in introgression and may have long‐standing impacts for sympatric sister species. Exploring the extent of hybrid zones such as this for other range‐expanding taxa will elucidate whether this type of hybrid zone is unique or a common occurrence.  相似文献

Birdsong is a sexually selected trait that could play an important evolutionary role when related taxa come into secondary contact. Many songbird species, however, learn their songs through copying one or more tutors, which complicates the evolutionary outcome of such contact. Two subspecies of a presumed vocal learner, the grey‐breasted wood‐wren (Henicorhina leucophrys), replace each other altitudinally across the western slope of the Ecuadorian Andes. These subspecies are morphologically very similar, but show striking differences in their song. We examined variation in acoustic traits and genetic composition across the altitudinal range covered by both subspecies and between two allopatric populations. The acoustic boundary between the subspecies was found to be highly abrupt across a narrow elevational range with virtually no evidence of song convergence. Mixed singing and use of hetero‐subspecific song occurred in the contact zone and was biased towards the use of leucophrys song types. Hetero‐subspecific song copying by hilaris and not by leucophrys reflected a previously found asymmetric pattern of response to song playback. Using amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) markers, we detected hybridization in the contact zone and asymmetric introgression in parapatric populations, with more leucophrys alleles present in hilaris populations than vice versa. This pattern may be a trail of introgression due to upslope displacement of leucophrys by hilaris. Our data suggest that song learning may impact speciation and hybridization in contrasting ways at different spatial scales: although learning may speed up population divergence in songs, thereby enhancing assortative mating and reducing gene flow, it may at a local level also lead to the copying of heterospecific songs, therefore allowing some level of hybridization and introgression.  相似文献

During secondary contact between two species when hybrids are less fit than parents, mating signals are expected to diverge, while aggressive signals are expected to converge. If a single signal trait is used in both mating and aggression, then the dynamics between these two forces could influence the evolutionary trajectory of that trait. We studied such a situation in an avian hybrid zone between two Setophaga species, where birdsong is used in both mate attraction and territory defense. We hypothesized that song modules of the two species will show separate and distinct geographic patterns due to the influence of selective pressures for effective territorial aggression and for effective mate attraction. We conducted geographic cline analyses and playback experiments across this hybrid zone. We found an unexpected geographic pattern of asymmetric introgression of song rhythm, which may be explained by results of the playback experiments that suggest that differences in song rhythm serve a greater role in mate attraction than in territory defense. In contrast, differences in syllable morphology show little evidence of importance in mate attraction or territorial defense. Song features converge in the hybrid zone, yet patterns of trait change suggest that the song production modules may vary in their modes of development and inheritance. Syringeal motor gesturing, which gives rise to syllable morphology, shows a nonclinal mosaic pattern, suggesting that this trait may be predominantly learned. In contrast, respiratory patterning, which forms song rhythm, shows a clinal geographic transition, suggesting that this trait could be more innate. The results indicate that opposing forces act independently on song via distinct modules of the song production mechanism, driving complex patterns of song trait evolution.  相似文献

Much progress in speciation research stems from documenting patterns of morphological and genetic variation in hybrid zones. Contrasting patterns of marker introgression in different sections of the contact can provide valuable insights on the relative importance of various evolutionary mechanisms maintaining species differences in the face of hybridization and gene flow and on hybrid zone temporal and spatial dynamics. We studied species interactions in the common toads Bufo bufo and B. spinosus in France and northwestern Italy using morphological and molecular data from the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes in an extensive survey, including two independent transects west and east of the Alps. At both, we found sharp, coincident and concordant nuclear genetic transitions. However, morphological clines were wider or absent and mtDNA introgression was asymmetric. We discuss alternative, nonexclusive hypotheses about evolutionary processes generating these patterns, including drift, selection, long‐distance dispersal and spatial shifts in hybrid zone location and structure. The distribution of intraspecific mtDNA lineages supports a scenario in which B. bufo held a local refugium during the last glacial maximum. Present‐day genetic profiles are best explained by an advance of B. spinosus from a nearby Iberian refugium, largely superseding the local B. bufo population, followed by an advance of B. bufo from the Balkans, with prongs north and south of the Alps, driving B. spinosus southwards. A pendulum moving hybrid zone, first northwards and then southwards, explains the wide areas of introgression at either side of the current position of the contact zones.  相似文献

Hybridization and introgression appear more common in rapidly evolving groups, suggesting an important role in the evolutionary process. Detailed studies of how extrinsic or intrinsic forces regulate hybridization and introgression have the potential for broadening our understanding of mechanisms generating diversity. Species in the Fundulus notatus species complex have broad overlapping ranges and occur in replicated hybrid zones along predictable stream gradients. Typical hybrid zone structure has Fundulus olivaceus in headwaters, F. notatus downstream, and hybrid zones near confluences or abrupt shifts in habitat. Rarely, the typical upstream‐downstream orientation is reversed raising questions as to how hybrid zones are formed and maintained. We used next‐generation sequencing data to study hybridization and introgression in hybrid zones in neighboring drainages that differ in orientation (typical and reversed). We predicted extrinsic forces linked to stream gradients would result in noticeable differences between the two. Contrary to predictions, the data indicate the hybrid zones are remarkably similar. We used individual‐based simulations to explore the potential role of intrinsic and extrinsic forces in generating and maintaining typical and reversed hybrid zones. Simulation results were consistent with reversed hybrid zones being formed from stochastic processes combined with strong intrinsic forces and weak extrinsic forces.  相似文献

Moving hybrid zones are receiving increasing attention. However, so far little is known about the proximate mechanisms underlying these movements. Signalling behaviour, by individuals engaged in interspecific sexual and aggressive interactions, may play a crucial role. In this study, we investigated song variation within a moving hybrid zone between two warblers, Hippolais polyglotta and H. icterina . In these species, song is involved in interspecific territoriality and, probably, in mixed pairings. We showed that allopatric populations of the two species are clearly acoustically differentiated. However, interspecific differences faded out in sympatry as a result of an overall pattern of convergence. Unexpectedly, the two species converged for different song parameters, namely temporal parameters for H. icterina and syntax for H. polyglotta . Hybridization and interspecific competition could explain convergence in H. icterina . Instead, in H. polyglotta we suggest that local adaptation to habitat and interspecific learning might contribute to convergence. Mitochondrial genome (mito‐genome) introgression among metazoans is commonplace, and several biological processes may promote such introgression. We examined two proposed processes for the mito‐genome introgression between Rana chensinensis and R. kukunoris: natural hybridization and sex‐biased dispersal. We sampled 477 individuals from 28 sites in the potential hybrid zone in the western Tsinling Mountains. Mitochondrial gene (cytb) trees were used to examine the introgression events. Microsatellite DNA loci, cytb and morphological data were used to identify hybrids and to examine the extent of natural hybridization. We detected rampant bidirectional introgressions, both ancient and recent, between the two species. Furthermore, we found a wide hybrid zone, and frequent and asymmetric hybridization. The hybrid zone cline analysis revealed a clear mitochondrial–nuclear discordance; while most nuclear markers displayed similar and steep clines, cytb had a displaced cline centre and a more gradual and wider cline. We also detected strong and asymmetric historical maternal gene flow across the hybrid zone. This widespread hybridization and detected low mito‐nuclear conflicts may, at least partially, explain the high frequency of introgression. Lastly, microsatellite data and population genetic methods were used to assess sex‐biased dispersal. A weak pattern of female‐biased dispersal was detected in both species, suggesting it may not play an important role in the observed introgression. Our data are consistent with the hybridization hypothesis, but support for the sex‐biased dispersal hypothesis is weak. We further suggest that selective advantages of the R. kukunoris‐type mito‐genome in thermal adaptation may also contribute to the introgression between the two species.  相似文献

Studies of the genetics of hybrid zones can provide insight into the genomic architecture of species boundaries. By examining patterns of introgression of multiple loci across a hybrid zone, it may be possible to identify regions of the genome that have experienced selection. Here, we present a comparison of introgression in two replicate transects through the house mouse hybrid zone through central Europe, using data from 41 single nucleotide markers. Using both genomic and geographic clines, we found many differences in patterns of introgression between the two transects, as well as some similarities. We found that many loci may have experienced the effects of selection at linked sites, including selection against hybrid genotypes, as well as positive selection in the form of genotypes introgressed into a foreign genetic background. We also found many positive associations of conspecific alleles among unlinked markers, which could be caused by epistatic interactions. Different patterns of introgression in the two transects highlight the challenge of using hybrid zones to identify genes underlying isolation and raise the possibility that the genetic basis of isolation between these species may be dependent on the local population genetic make-up or the local ecological setting.  相似文献

Two distinct taxa of marine crabs (Menippe mercenaria and M. adina, sensu Williams and Felder [1986]) interbreed extensively in two disjunct areas of the coastal southeastern United States. We used variation in coloration and allele frequencies at three diagnostic loci to examine in detail the structure of the two zones of variation. A narrow hybrid zone in northwest Florida is situated at the junction of the present ranges of the two parental forms, in an area of strong ecological change and hydrological convergence. Despite extensive hybridization in this area, there is a significant deficiency of heterozygotes for the Alp-2 locus, nonrandom associations of alleles for two diagnostic loci, and an absence of certain combinations of phenotypes and genotypes. Along the Atlantic coast (east central Florida into South Carolina), a broad zone of increased variability exists within the range of M. mercenaria. Allele frequencies throughout this zone are similar to those of M. mercenaria but reflect apparent introgression from M. adina. In contrast, color patterns are quite variable, but only in the center of this zone. There is little evidence of a heterozygote deficiency, and the preferred habitat of M. mercenaria is not present. The Atlantic zone of variability is apparently expanding, with alleles at enzyme loci introgressing more rapidly than color characteristics. Despite these differences, certain features are common to both zones. These include 1) asymmetry in terms of the direction of introgression, 2) differential introgression of alleles, and 3) an almost complete absence of M. adina phenotypes that carry high proportions of M. mercenaria alleles. Differences between the two zones illustrate the influence that environmental setting, time of contact in relation to time of divergence, and location of the zone relative to the parental species ranges can have on hybridization events. However, observed similarities between the zones suggest that certain patterns of introgression and recombination may be independent of environmental setting. Thus, we suggest that factors inherent to the organism (intrinsic factors) and factors inherent to the environment (extrinsic factors) both act to structure and maintain the two hybrid zones.  相似文献

Hybrid zones are 'natural laboratories' for studying the origin, maintenance and demise of species. Theory predicts that hybrid zones can move in space and time, with significant consequences for both evolutionary and conservation biology, though such movement is often perceived as rare. Here, a review of empirical studies of moving hybrid zones in animals and plants shows 23 examples with observational evidence for movement, and a further 16 where patterns of introgression in molecular markers could be interpreted as signatures of movement. The strengths and weaknesses of methods used for detecting hybrid zone movement are discussed, including long-term replicated sampling, historical surveys, museum/herbarium collections, patterns of relictual populations and introgression of genetic markers into an advancing taxon. Factors governing hybrid zone movement are assessed in the light of the empirical studies, including environmental selection, competition, asymmetric hybridization, dominance drive, hybrid fitness, human activity and climate change. Hybrid zone movement means that untested assumptions of stability in evolutionary studies on hybrid zone can lead to mistaken conclusions. Movement also means that conservation effort aimed at protecting against introgression could unwittingly favour an invading taxon. Moving hybrid zones are of wide interest as examples of evolution in action and possible indicators of environmental change. More long-term experimental studies are needed that incorporate reciprocal transplants, hybridization experiments and surveys of molecular markers and population densities on a range of scales.  相似文献

The maintenance or breakdown of reproductive isolation is an observable outcome of secondary contact between species. In cases where hybrids beyond the F1 are formed, the representation of each species' ancestry can vary dramatically among genomic regions. This genomic heterogeneity in ancestry and introgression can offer insight into evolutionary processes, particularly if introgression is compared in multiple hybrid zones. Similarly, considerable heterogeneity exists across the genome in the extent to which populations and species have diverged, reflecting the combined effects of different evolutionary processes on genetic variation. We studied hybridization across two hybrid zones of two phenotypically well‐differentiated bird species in Mexico (Pipilo maculatus and P. ocai), to investigate genomic heterogeneity in differentiation and introgression. Using genotyping‐by‐sequencing (GBS) and hierarchical Bayesian models, we genotyped 460 birds at over 41 000 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci. We identified loci exhibiting extreme introgression relative to the genome‐wide expectation using a Bayesian genomic cline model. We also estimated locus‐specific FST and identified loci with exceptionally high genetic divergence between the parental species. We found some concordance of locus‐specific introgression in the two independent hybrid zones (6–20% of extreme loci shared across zones), reflecting areas of the genome that experience similar gene flow when the species interact. Additionally, heterogeneity in introgression and divergence across the genome revealed another subset of loci under the influence of locally specific factors. These results are consistent with a history in which reproductive isolation has been influenced by a common set of loci in both hybrid zones, but where local environmental and stochastic factors also lead to genomic differentiation.  相似文献

Hybrid zone movement may result in substantial unidirectional introgression of selectively neutral material from the local to the advancing species, leaving a genetic footprint. This genetic footprint is represented by a trail of asymmetric tails and displaced cline centres in the wake of the moving hybrid zone. A peak of admixture linkage disequilibrium is predicted to exist ahead of the centre of the moving hybrid zone. We test these predictions of the movement hypothesis in a hybrid zone between common (Bufo bufo) and spined toads (B. spinosus), using 31 nuclear and one mtDNA SNPs along a transect in the northwest of France. Average effective selection in Bufo hybrids is low and clines vary in shape and centre. A weak pattern of asymmetric introgression is inferred from cline discordance of seven nuclear markers. The dominant direction of gene flow is from B. spinosus to B. bufo and is in support of southward movement of the hybrid zone. Conversely, a peak of admixture linkage disequilibrium north of the hybrid zone suggests northward movement. These contrasting results can be explained by reproductive isolation of the B. spinosus and B. bufo gene pools at the southern (B. spinosus) side of the hybrid zone. The joint occurrence of asymmetric introgression and admixture linkage disequilibrium can also be explained by the combination of low dispersal and random genetic drift due to low effective population sizes.  相似文献

Genomic heterogeneity of divergence between hybridizing species may reflect heterogeneity of introgression, but also processes unrelated to hybridization. Heterogeneous introgression and its repeatability can be directly tested in natural hybrid zones by examining multiple transects. Here, we studied hybrid zones between the European newts Lissotriton montandoni and two lineages of Lissotriton vulgaris, with replicate transects within each zone. Over 1,000 nuclear genes located on a linkage map and mitochondrial DNA were investigated using geographical and genomic clines. Overall, the five transects were all similar, showing hallmarks of strong reproductive isolation: bimodal distribution of genotypes in central populations and narrow allele frequency clines. However, the extent of introgression differed between the zones, possibly as a consequence of their different ages, as suggested by the analysis of heterozygosity runs in diagnostic markers. In three transects genomic signatures of small‐scale (~2 km) zone movements were detected. We found limited overlap of cline outliers between transects, and only weak evidence of stronger differentiation of introgression between zones than between transects within zones. Introgression was heterogeneous across linkage groups, with patterns of heterogeneity similar between transects and zones. Predefined candidates for increased or reduced introgression exhibited only a subtle tendency in the expected direction, suggesting that interspecific differentiation is not a reliable indicator for the strength of introgression. These hierarchically sampled hybrid zones of apparently different ages show how introgression unfolds with time and offer an excellent opportunity to dissect the dynamics of hybridization and architecture of reproductive isolation at advanced stages of speciation.  相似文献

Natural hybridization of plants can result in many outcomes with several evolutionary consequences, such as hybrid speciation and introgression. Natural hybrid zones can arise in mountain systems as a result of fluctuating climate during the exchange of glacial and interglacial periods, where species retract and expand their territories, resulting in secondary contacts. Willows are a large genus of woody plants with an immense capability of interspecific crossing. In this study, the sympatric area of two diploid sister species, S. foetida and S. waldsteiniana in the eastern European Alps, was investigated to study the genomic structure of populations within and outside their contact zone and to analyze congruence of morphological phenotypes with genetic data. Eleven populations of the two species were sampled across the Alps and examined using phylogenetic network and population genetic structure analyses of RAD Seq data and morphometric analyses of leaves. The results showed that a homoploid hybrid zone between the two species was established within their sympatric area. Patterns of genetic admixture in homoploid hybrids indicated introgression with asymmetric backcrossing to not only one of the parental species but also one hybrid population forming a separate lineage. The lack of F1 hybrids indicated a long-term persistence of the hybrid populations. Insignificant isolation by distance suggests that gene flow can act over large geographical scales. Morphometric characteristics of hybrids supported the molecular data and clearly separated populations of the parental species, but showed intermediacy in the hybrid zone populations with a bias toward S. waldsteiniana. The homoploid hybrid zone might have been established via secondary contact hybridization, and its establishment was fostered by the low genetic divergence of parental species and a lack of strong intrinsic crossing barriers. Incomplete ecological separation and the ability of long-distance dispersal of willows could have contributed to the spatial expansion of the hybrid zone.  相似文献

Three species of closely related woodpeckers (sapsuckers; Sphyrapicus) hybridize where they come into contact, presenting a rare ‘λ‐shape’ meeting of hybrid zones. Two of the three arms of this hybrid zone are located on either side of the Interior Plateau of British Columbia, Canada bordering the foothills of the Coast Mountains and the Rocky Mountains. The third arm is located in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The zones of hybridization present high variability of phenotypes and alleles in relatively small areas and provide an opportunity to examine levels of reproductive isolation between the taxa involved. We examined phenotypes (morphometric traits and plumage) and genotypes of 175 live birds across the two hybrid zones. We used the Genotyping By Sequencing (GBS) method to identify 180 partially diagnostic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to generate a genetic hybrid index (GHI) for each bird. Phenotypically diverged S. ruber and S. nuchalis are genetically closely related, while S. nuchalis and S. varius have similar plumage but are well separated at the genetic markers studied. The width of both hybrid zones is narrower than expected under neutrality, and analyses of both genotypes and phenotypes indicate that hybrids are rare in the hybrid zone. Rarity of hybrids indicates assortative mating and/or some form of fitness reduction in hybrids, which might maintain the species complex despite close genetic distance and introgression. These findings further support the treatment of the three taxa as distinct species.  相似文献

The shape of hybrid zones provides insight into genetic isolation between the evolutionary lineages involved: the greater the limitation to gene flow, the farther along the unimodal to bimodal continuum. We study hybrid zone modality in a group of closely related species at a variety of levels of genetic divergence. We explore the degree and the geography of hybridization in 12 transects of Triturus newts, for nine of the ten secondary contact zones in Europe, using nuclear and mitochondrial encoded genetic data and morphological characteristics. Species status is verified by examining the correlation between the three marker systems in a geographical context. At 40 allozyme loci, two transects classify as unimodal, three as bimodal and two as intermediate, while the signal for hybridization is weak or absent in five transects. One zone studied in duplicate was classified as intermediate in one region and as bimodal in another region. mtDNA introgression is frequent and extends beyond nuclear introgression in two transects. Morphology provides additional evidence for hybridity, including one transect for which the signal of nuclear gene flow is weak. Compared to simulations allowing panmixia, the observed allozyme transitions at contact zones show a deficit of backcrossing to various degrees. Over all transects, there is a weak negative relationship between the level of hybridization and allozyme genetic distance for species pairs, consistent with Bateson–Dobzhansky–Muller effects. This observation, based upon highly comparable data for a single genus, supports conclusions derived from analyses over a wide variety of other taxa. © 2014 The Authors. We have identified a broad zone of hybridization between two morphologically and ecologically distinct herbaceous perennial taxa (morphotypes) within the Piriqueta caroliniana complex, which extends more than 300 km across the central Florida peninsula. Phylogeographic analyses indicate that the caroliniana morphotype has been present in north and central Florida since the early Pleistocene and that the viridis morphotype has immigrated into southern Florida much more recently. We examine the distribution of diagnostic morphological characters and nuclear genetic markers to assess the extent and patterns of introgression in this system. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that this hybrid zone has expanded north in recent history as viridis alleles have introgressed into regions that were previously occupied by populations of caroliniana. Genetic markers diagnostic for caroliniana have consistently high frequencies across the hybrid zone, whereas markers for viridis are extremely variable among populations with frequency reversals in adjacent populations. The latter pattern is probably the result of the combined stochastic effects of dispersal and drift on viridis alleles as they introgressed northward. Additional evidence for the recent expansion of this hybrid zone comes from patterns of variation for morphological and genetic markers. As expected for an expanding hybrid zone, within-population morphological variation was greatest toward the advancing front of introgression and levels of genetic variation for neutral diagnostic markers were greatest in the region of initial contact and lower in areas of recent expansion. The observed patterns of variation suggest that at least some hybrid genotypes have high fitnesses, which has led to the expansion of the hybrid zone via the displacement of parental genotypes in central Florida.  相似文献

Cottonwoods are well known as foundation riparian trees that support diverse communities and drive ecosystem processes. Although hybridization naturally occurs when the distributions of two or more cottonwood species overlap, few cottonwood hybrid zones have been genetically characterized. We use genetic and genomic analyses to characterize patterns of admixture and introgression for a newly described hybrid zone at the intersection of three species (Populus L. Salicaceae—Populus deltoides, Populus fremontii, and Populus angustifolia) in southwestern Colorado, USA. Analysis of nuclear and chloroplast microsatellite marker data detected substantial genetic variation among individuals, revealing that (1) hybridization is occurring between two, not three, species (P. deltoides and P. angustifolia); (2) gene flow is bidirectional; (3) hybrids are not abundant (admixture detected in only 34 of 270 trees), with most being early-generation F1 hybrids; (4) cytonuclear disequilibria exists and F1 hybrids tend to retain P. deltoides—like chloroplasts; and (5) roughly 30 % of the nuclear markers deviated from a neutral pattern of introgression, suggesting that selection may play a role in shaping the genetic structure of the hybrid zone in this region. Overall, our results show that despite strong selection maintaining species divergence, transfer of allelic variants across species boundaries can occur. Our study assesses the fine-scale genetic structure of hybridization between P. angustifolia and P. deltoides and lays the foundation for examining how geographic differences in hybrid zone dynamics arise and may influence subsequent ecological and evolutionary processes.  相似文献
