Sediment quality criteria in use around the world   总被引:20,自引:0,他引:20  
 There have been numerous sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) developed during the past 20 years to assist regulators in dealing with contaminated sediments. Unfortunately, most of these have been developed in North America. Traditionally, sediment contamination was determined by assessing the bulk chemical concentrations of individual compounds and often comparing them with background or reference values. Since the 1980s, SQGs have attempted to incorporate biological effects in their derivation approach. These approaches can be categorized as empirical, frequency-based approaches to establish the relationship between sediment contamination and toxic response, and theoretically based approaches that attempt to account for differences in bioavailability through equilibrium partitioning (EqP) (i.e., using organic carbon or acid volatile sulfides). Some of these guidelines have been adopted by various regulatory agencies in several countries and are being used as cleanup goals in remediation activities and to identify priority polluted sites. The original SQGs, which compared bulk chemical concentrations to a reference or to background, provided little insight into the ecosystem impact of sediment contaminants. Therefore, SQGs for individual chemicals were developed that relied on field sediment chemistry paired with field or laboratory-based biological effects data. Although some SQGs have been found to be relatively good predictors of significant site contamination, they also have several limitations. False positive and false negative predictions are frequently in the 20% to 30% range for many chemicals and higher for others. The guidelines are chemical specific and do not establish causality where chemical mixtures occur. Equilibrium-based guidelines do not consider sediment ingestion as an exposure route. The guidelines do not consider spatial and temporal variability, and they may not apply in dynamic or larger-grained sediments. Finally, sediment chemistry and bioavailability are easily altered by sampling and subsequent manipulation processes, and therefore, measured SQGs may not reflect in situ conditions. All the assessment tools provide useful information, but some (such as SQGs, laboratory toxicity and bioaccumulation, and benthic indices) are prone to misinterpretation without the availability of specific in situ exposure and effects data. SQGs should be used only in a “screening” manner or in a “weight-of-evidence” approach. Aquatic ecosystems (including sediments) must be assessed in a “holistic” manner in which multiple components are assessed (e.g., habitat, hydrodynamics, resident biota, toxicity, and physicochemistry, including SQGs) by using integrated approaches. Prediction of ecosystem response to global environmental change is a pressing scientific challenge of major societal relevance. Many ecosystems display nonlinear responses to environmental change, and may even undergo practically irreversible ‘regime shifts’ that initiate ecosystem collapse. Recently, early warning signals based on spatiotemporal metrics have been proposed for the identification of impending regime shifts. The rapidly increasing availability of remotely sensed data provides excellent opportunities to apply such model‐based spatial early warning signals in the real world, to assess ecosystem resilience and identify impending regime shifts induced by global change. Such information would allow land‐managers and policy makers to interfere and avoid catastrophic shifts, but also to induce regime shifts that move ecosystems to a desired state. Here, we show that the application of spatial early warning signals in real‐world landscapes presents unique and unexpected challenges, and may result in misleading conclusions when employed without careful consideration of the spatial data and processes at hand. We identify key practical and theoretical issues and provide guidelines for applying spatial early warning signals in heterogeneous, real‐world landscapes based on literature review and examples from real‐world data. Major identified issues include (1) spatial heterogeneity in real‐world landscapes may enhance reversibility of regime shifts and boost landscape‐level resilience to environmental change (2) ecosystem states are often difficult to define, while these definitions have great impact on spatial early warning signals and (3) spatial environmental variability and socio‐economic factors may affect spatial patterns, spatial early warning signals and associated regime shift predictions. We propose a novel framework, shifting from an ecosystem perspective towards a landscape approach. The framework can be used to identify conditions under which resilience assessment with spatial remotely sensed data may be successful, to support well‐informed application of spatial early warning signals, and to improve predictions of ecosystem responses to global environmental change.  相似文献

Normal behavior plays a key role in facilitating homeostasis, especially by allowing the animal to control and modify its environment. Captive environments may interfere with these behavioral responses, and the resulting stress may alter many physiological parameters. Abnormal behaviors indicate that an animal is unable to adjust behaviorally to the captive environment and, hence, may be expressing abnormal physiology. Therefore, captive environments may affect the following aspects of an experiment: validity, by introducing abnormal animals into experiments; reliability, by increasing interindividual variation through the introduction of such individuals; and replicability, by altering the number and type of such individuals between laboratories. Thus, far from increasing variability, enrichment may actually improve validity, reliability, and replicability by reducing the number of abnormal animals introduced into experiments. In this article, the specific example of abnormal repetitive behaviors (ARBs) is explored. ARBs in captive animals appear to involve the same mechanisms as ARBs in human psychiatry, which reflect underlying abnormalities of brain function. ARBs are also correlated with a wide range of behavioral changes that affect experimental outcomes. Thus, ARBs in laboratory animals may compromise validity, reliability, and replicability, especially in behavioral experiments; and enrichments that prevent ARB may enhance validity, reliability, and replicability. Although many links in this argument have been tested experimentally, key issues still remain in the interpretation of these data. In particular, it is currently unclear (1) whether or not the differences in brain function seen in animals performing ARB are abnormal, (2) which common behavioral paradigms are affected by ARB, and (3) whether enrichment does indeed improve the quality of behavioral data. Understanding the dynamics of fine sediment transport across the upper intertidal zone is critical in managing the erosion and accretion of intertidal areas, and in managed realignment/estuarine habitat recreation strategies. This paper examines the transfer of sediments between salt marsh and mudflat environments in two contrasting macrotidal estuaries: the Seine (France) and the Medway (UK), using data collected during two joint field seasons undertaken by the Anglo-French RIMEW project (Rives-Manche Estuary Watch). High-resolution ADCP, Altimeter, OBS and ASM measurements from mudflat and marsh surface environments have been combined with sediment trap data to examine short-term sediment transport processes under spring tide and storm flow conditions. In addition, the longer-term accumulation of sediment in each salt marsh system has been examined via radiometric dating of sediment cores. In the Seine, rapid sediment accumulation and expansion of salt marsh areas, and subsequent loss of open intertidal mudflats, is a major problem, and the data collected here indicate a distinct net landward flux of sediments into the marsh interior. Suspended sediment fluxes are much higher than in the Medway estuary (averaging 0.09 g/m3/s), and vertical accumulation rates at the salt marsh/mudflat boundary exceed 3 cm/y. Suspended sediment data collected during storm surge conditions indicate that significant in-wash of fine sediments into the marsh interior can occur during (and following) these high-magnitude events. In contrast to the Seine, the Medway is undergoing erosion and general loss of salt marsh areas. Suspended sediment fluxes are of the order of 0.03 g/m3/s, and the marsh system here has much lower rates of vertical accretion (sediment accumulation rates are ca. 4 mm/y). Current velocity data for the Medway site indicate higher velocities on the ebb tide than occur on the flood tide, which may be sufficient to remobilise sediments deposited on the previous tide and so force net removal of material from the marsh.  相似文献

1. The role of sediment phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) in regulating growth of rooted macrophytes in a Canadian prairie river was investigated by means of in situ observations and artificial stream fertilization experiments.
2. Biomass and percentage cover of rooted macrophytes in the South Saskatchewan River increased downstream of a municipal sewage treatment plant, with maximum abundance occurring between 25 and 100 km downstream of the outfall. Biomass in the river was related to sediment P but not N concentration, although sites of maximum biomass did not coincide with sites of maximum sediment P concentration.
3. Artificial stream experiments revealed that while biomass was unaffected by addition of N to the sediment, it was enhanced by the addition of P to sediments, and further enhanced with the addition of N and P together, indicating a primarily P‐limited system, with secondary N limitation when P is in excess.
4. Macrophyte biomass increased linearly with increasing sediment P concentration in the artificial streams, and tissue P concentration peaked at ≈ 400 μg g–1. Biomass did not respond to increasing sediment N concentration, and only a weak relationship was observed between tissue N and sediment N, with maximum tissue N corresponding to ≈ 140 μg g–1 sediment exchangeable N.

A lack of concurrence between the sediment P concentration producing maximum biomass and tissue P concentration in situ vs. under experimental conditions indicates that other environmental factors have an important role in regulating macrophyte growth in rivers. Thus, while nutrient control may be one element in a river macrophyte control programme, a holistic ecosystem approach should be adopted to account for the other factors that may affect the growth of rooted plants.  相似文献

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD risk factors are highly heritable, and numerous lines of evidence indicate they have a strong genetic basis. While there is nothing known about the interactive effects of genetics and exercise training on CVD itself, there is at least some literature addressing their interactive effect on CVD risk factors. There is some evidence indicating that CVD risk factor responses to exercise training are also heritable and, thus, may have a genetic basis. While roughly 100 studies have reported significant effects of genetic variants on CVD risk factor responses to exercise training, no definitive conclusions can be generated at the present time, because of the lack of consistent and replicated results and the small sample sizes evident in most studies. There is some evidence supporting "possible" candidate genes that may affect these responses to exercise training: APO E and CETP for plasma lipoprotein-lipid profiles; eNOS, ACE, EDN1, and GNB3 for blood pressure; PPARG for type 2 diabetes phenotypes; and FTO and BAR genes for obesity-related phenotypes. However, while genotyping technologies and statistical methods are advancing rapidly, the primary limitation in this field is the need to generate what in terms of exercise intervention studies would be almost incomprehensible sample sizes. Most recent diabetes, obesity, and blood pressure genetic studies have utilized populations of 10,000-250,000 subjects, which result in the necessary statistical power to detect the magnitude of effects that would probably be expected for the impact of an individual gene on CVD risk factor responses to exercise training. Thus at this time it is difficult to see how this field will advance in the future to the point where robust, consistent, and replicated data are available to address these issues. However, the results of recent large-scale genomewide association studies for baseline CVD risk factors may drive future hypothesis-driven exercise training intervention studies in smaller populations addressing the impact of specific genetic variants on well-defined physiological phenotypes.  相似文献

Estuarine sediments are frequently polluted with hydrocarbons from fuel spills and industrial wastes. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are components of these contaminants that tend to accumulate in the sediment due to their low aqueous solubility, low volatility, and high affinity for particulate matter. The toxic, recalcitrant, mutagenic, and carcinogenic nature of these compounds may require aggressive treatment to remediate polluted sites effectively. In petroleum-contaminated sediments near a petrochemical industry in Gwangyang Bay, Korea, in situ PAH concentrations ranged from 10 to 2,900 microg/kg dry sediment. To enhance the biodegradation rate of PAHs under anaerobic conditions, sediment samples were amended with biostimulating agents alone or in combination: nitrogen and phosphorus in the form of slow-release fertilizer (SRF), lactate, yeast extract (YE), and Tween 80. When added to the sediment individually, all tested agents enhanced the degradation of PAHs, including naphthalene, acenaphthene, anthracene, fluorene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, and benzo[a]pyrene. Moreover, the combination of SRF, Tween 80, and lactate increased the PAH degradation rate 1.2-8.2 times above that of untreated sediment (0.01-10 microg PAH/kg dry sediment/day). Our results indicated that in situ contaminant PAHs in anoxic sediment, including high molecular weight PAHs, were degraded biologically and that the addition of stimulators increased the biodegradation potential of the intrinsic microbial populations. Our results will contribute to the development of new strategies for in situ treatment of PAH-contaminated anoxic sediments.  相似文献

The response of bivalves to their abiotic environment has been widely studied in relation to hydroenvironmental conditions, sediment types and sediment grain sizes. However, the possible role of varying geoenvironmental conditions in their habitats remains poorly understood. Here, we show that the hardness of the surficial intertidal sediments varies by a factor of 20-50 due to suction development and suction-induced void state changes in the essentially saturated states of intertidal flats and beaches. We investigated the response of two species of bivalves, Ruditapes philippinarum and Donax semigranosus, in the laboratory by simulating such prevailing geoenvironmental conditions in the field. The experimental results demonstrate that the bivalve responses depended strongly on the varying geoenvironmental conditions. Notably, both bivalves consistently shifted their burrowing modes, reducing the burrowing angle and burial depth, in response to increasing hardness, to compensate for the excessive energy required for burrowing, as explained by a proposed conceptual model. This burrowing mode adjustment was accompanied by two burrowing criteria below or above which the bivalves accomplished vertical burrowing or failed to burrow, respectively. The suitable and fatal conditions differed markedly with species and shell lengths. The acute sensitivities of the observed bivalve responses to geoenvironmental changes revealed two distinctive mechanisms accounting for the adult-juvenile spatial distributions of Ruditapes philippinarum and the behavioral adaptation to a rapidly changing geoenvironment of Donax semigranosus. The present results may provide a rational basis by which to understand the ensuing, and to predict future, bivalve responses to geoenvironmental changes in intertidal zones.  相似文献

Rivers in northern Queensland are ephemeral and carry water mainly as a direct response to heavy rainfall. Sediment is transported downstream with the runoff and sediment deposition may be a major problem in many proposed reservoirs. Hence information about sediment transport, particularly under high flow conditions, is required for planning and design of water storage reservoirs. In this region, bed material samples can be obtained during low flow periods and suspended sediment sampling during floods is possible but only with difficulty. Little reliable data is available.This paper outlines a possible approach to predicting sediment loads in such rivers. Suspended sediment samples have been analysed to give both particulate concentrations and their grain size distributions. The latter have been compared with bed material size distributions, and the concentrations of suspended bed material and wash load components have been estimated.After investigations of a number of methods for predicting bed material transport, those which treat bed load and suspended load independently have been selected. Field data have been used to determine the wash load and the suspended bed material load. The bed load was then computed so that the total sediment load could be determined.This approach has been applied to the Flinders River at Glendower, based on field data obtained by the Queensland Water Resources Commission in 1982/83.  相似文献

Aging has been shown to slow reflexes and increase reaction time to varied stimuli. However, the effect of Type II diabetes on these same reaction times has not been reported. Diabetes affects peripheral nerves in the somatosensory and auditory system, slows psychomotor responses, and has cognitive effects on those individuals without proper metabolic control, all of which may affect reaction times. Earth observation (EO) is the use of remote sensing and in situ observations to gather data on the environment. It finds increasing application in the study of environmentally modulated neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Obtaining and assuring the quality of the relevant spatially and temporally indexed EO data remain challenges. Our objective was to review the Earth observation products currently used in studies of NTD epidemiology and to discuss fundamental issues relating to spatial data quality (SDQ), which limit the utilization of EO and pose challenges for its more effective use. We searched Web of Science and PubMed for studies related to EO and echinococossis, leptospirosis, schistosomiasis, and soil-transmitted helminth infections. Relevant literature was also identified from the bibliographies of those papers. We found that extensive use is made of EO products in the study of NTD epidemiology; however, the quality of these products is usually given little explicit attention. We review key issues in SDQ concerning spatial and temporal scale, uncertainty, and the documentation and use of quality information. We give examples of how these issues may interact with uncertainty in NTD data to affect the output of an epidemiological analysis. We conclude that researchers should give careful attention to SDQ when designing NTD spatial-epidemiological studies. This should be used to inform uncertainty analysis in the epidemiological study. SDQ should be documented and made available to other researchers.  相似文献

There is now a significant body of literature which reports that stripes form in the ligand shell of suitably functionalised Au nanoparticles. This stripe morphology has been proposed to strongly affect the physicochemical and biochemical properties of the particles. We critique the published evidence for striped nanoparticles in detail, with a particular focus on the interpretation of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) data (as this is the only technique which ostensibly provides direct evidence for the presence of stripes). Through a combination of an exhaustive re-analysis of the original data, in addition to new experimental measurements of a simple control sample comprising entirely unfunctionalised particles, we show that all of the STM evidence for striped nanoparticles published to date can instead be explained by a combination of well-known instrumental artefacts, or by issues with data acquisition/analysis protocols. We also critically re-examine the evidence for the presence of ligand stripes which has been claimed to have been found from transmission electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, small angle neutron scattering experiments, and computer simulations. Although these data can indeed be interpreted in terms of stripe formation, we show that the reported results can alternatively be explained as arising from a combination of instrumental artefacts and inadequate data analysis techniques.  相似文献

Contaminated sediment has been identified as one of the major impediments to ecosystem restoration, but there has been little progress made in the management of sediment contaminants. Four primary lines of evidence are generally required for informed assessments yet the integration of these various lines of evidence is problematic. Using data from 220 reference sites located in the nearshore zone of the Laurentian Great Lakes the normal response of four species of laboratory organisms to sediments representing a wide range of sediment characteristics was examined. The toxicity data from the reference sites were used to establish categories of responses to test sediments. The delineations for the three categories were developed from the standard statistical parameters of population mean and standard deviation (mean ± SD) of an endpoint measured in all reference sediments. Three approaches for integrating information were examined; the first two are score based, the third approach uses a multivariate statistical method to integrate the responses. The methods were examined using both artificial and real test site data and from this it was concluded that ordination is the superior of the three. It is the least subjective within the context of the integration of the endpoints, is quantitative, and also provides appropriate weighting based on the variation observed within reference sites.  相似文献

Researchers not sufficiently sensitive to statistical power may interpret non-significant results as demonstrating that the conditions made no difference. Related issues include performer variability, sample size and effect size as they relate to experimental design. Leaf phospholipase D activity was compared in vitro and in situ. In the in situ reaction stimulated by methanol only phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine were degraded until approx. 80% of these endogenous substrates had been consumed. Only then was a limited amount (approx. 20%) of endogenous phosphatidylglycerol degraded. Endogenous phosphatidylinositol was apparently not susceptible to phospholipase D in situ. In the vitro reaction the relative susceptibilities to degradation of added phospholipid substrates were (a) in the absence of "activators" phosphatidylethanolamine greater than phosphatidylglycerol greater than phosphatidylcholine, (b) in the presence of diethyl ether phosphatidylcholine greater than phosphatidylethanolamine greater than phosphatidylglycerol and (c) in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate phosphatidylcholine greater than phosphatidylethanolamine = phosphatidylglycerol. Minimum rates calculated for the in situ reaction in cauliflower leaf were 5-fold higher than maximum in vitro rates reported for the same material. Phospholipase D activity has been demonstrated by the in situ reaction in all leaf tissue so far examined. From these data we conclude that phospholipase D may be an integral part of membranes containing phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine, but not of membranes containing phosphatidylglycerol. We also suggest that phospholipase D may not be a physiological enzyme, but rather a structural protein of phosphatidylcholine- and phosphatidylethanolamine-containing membranes and which, under certain non-physiological conditions, possess enzymic properties.  相似文献

Previous work on accumulation of plant material in modern depositionalenvironments is summarized and data from studies of three lakesediment samples, one river sediment sample and one river embaymentsurface floating sample are presented. The lake sediment sampleaway from the direct influence of an input stream but withina zone of marginal aquatic vegetation, is shown to provide themost authentic representation of the plant community withinwhich it was deposited. The sediment contained an abundant anddiverse assemblage of potential macrofossils from aquatic andmarginal aquatic plants. It also contained scant evidence ofthe existence of another plant community within the lake catchment.Details of this community were only revealed by the lake sedimentsample within the area influenced by the inflow stream. Thisand samples from other depositional environments contained confusingmixtures of potential macrofossils from local and regional vegetation.Sediment samples containing only thick walled, durable plantmaterial are considered to be the result of selective biodegradation.Under the conditions described here abrasion is considered tohave no significant effect on potential macrofossils. Variousways in which the data obtained from this study may assist inthe interpretation of plant fossil assemblages are considered. 从污染底泥的危害入手,提出简单、有效且低成本的底泥原位覆盖技术.该技术将无污染的清洁材料铺盖到污染底泥上,通过覆盖材料对污染物的阻隔、稳固和吸附作用来有效控制底泥污染物.覆盖材料的粒径、比表面积和孔隙率、密度等特性关系到材料的吸附能力和对底泥污染物的阻隔和稳固作用,从而决定覆盖效果.选取覆盖材料及确定最佳覆盖厚度需要依据材料的这些特性.本文分析了原位覆盖技术的优缺点及适用条件和适用范围.介绍了几种常用的原位覆盖工程的施工方式及每种方式的优缺点,列举了大量的国内外覆盖工程实例,并就覆盖技术在我国良好的应用前景进行了分析.  相似文献

Parasite-induced alterations of the host phenotype have been reported in many systems. These changes are traditionally categorized into three kinds of phenomena: secondary outcomes of infection with no adaptive value, host adaptations that reduce the detrimental consequences of infection and parasitic adaptations that facilitate transmission. However, this categorization is a simple view, and host modifications should be considered as co-evolved traits, rather than a total takeover. Here, we present a novel scenario of manipulation, which has considerable potential to resolve issues that are specific to the evolution of behavioural alterations induced by parasites. It is proposed that certain parasites affect fitness-related traits in their hosts to trigger host compensatory responses because these responses can meet the transmission objectives of parasites.  相似文献

Global change has the potential to affect river flow conditions which are fundamental determinants of physical habitats. Predictions of the effects of flow alterations on aquatic biota have mostly been assessed based on species ecological traits (e.g., current preferences), which are difficult to link to quantitative discharge data. Alternatively, we used empirically derived predictive relationships for species’ response to flow to assess the effect of flow alterations due to climate change in two contrasting central European river catchments. Predictive relationships were set up for 294 individual species based on (1) abundance data from 223 sampling sites in the Kinzig lower‐mountainous catchment and 67 sites in the Treene lowland catchment, and (2) flow conditions at these sites described by five flow metrics quantifying the duration, frequency, magnitude, timing and rate of flow events using present‐day gauging data. Species’ abundances were predicted for three periods: (1) baseline (1998–2017), (2) horizon 2050 (2046–2065) and (3) horizon 2090 (2080–2099) based on these empirical relationships and using high‐resolution modeled discharge data for the present and future climate conditions. We compared the differences in predicted abundances among periods for individual species at each site, where the percent change served as a proxy to assess the potential species responses to flow alterations. Climate change was predicted to most strongly affect the low‐flow conditions, leading to decreased abundances of species up to ?42%. Finally combining the response of all species over all metrics indicated increasing overall species assemblage responses in 98% of the studied river reaches in both projected horizons and were significantly larger in the lower‐mountainous Kinzig compared to the lowland Treene catchment. Such quantitative analyses of freshwater taxa responses to flow alterations provide valuable tools for predicting potential climate‐change impacts on species abundances and can be applied to any stressor, species, or region.  相似文献

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs that regulate various biological processes, primarily through interaction with messenger RNAs. The levels of specific, circulating miRNAs in blood have been shown to associate with various pathological conditions including cancers. These miRNAs have great potential as biomarkers for various pathophysiological conditions. In this study we focused on different sample types' effects on the spectrum of circulating miRNA in blood. Using serum and corresponding plasma samples from the same individuals, we observed higher miRNA concentrations in serum samples compared to the corresponding plasma samples. The difference between serum and plasma miRNA concentration showed some associations with miRNA from platelets, which may indicate that the coagulation process may affect the spectrum of extracellular miRNA in blood. Several miRNAs also showed platform dependent variations in measurements. Our results suggest that there are a number of factors that might affect the measurement of circulating miRNA concentration. Caution must be taken when comparing miRNA data generated from different sample types or measurement platforms.  相似文献
