Summary On adapting brackish waterAnguilla anguilla to fresh water it was noted that, while the plasma sodium, magnesium,pCO2 and pH were held reasonably constant, there was a substantial fall in chloride concentration (–33 mEq). The gradient of the linear correlations between plasma sodium and chloride also fell (brackish water gradient=0.92, fresh water gradient=0.21) indicating that a new pattern of plasma ion interrelationships was being established. Comparison with plasma Na/Cl ion ratios from other fishes suggested that this phenomenon was peculiar toA. anguilla. Corresponding with the very low plasma chloride levels plasma bicarbonate was four to five times that found in other fishes, and this was thought related to the finding that the haematocrit value almost doubled during adaptation to fresh water. In fresh water adapted fish a fall in plasma chloride was associated with a rise in plasma bicarbonate, however the charge compensation effect of this response was only partial as summing the common plasma cations and anions left an anion deficit of about 34 mEq to be accounted for.  相似文献

Exposure to anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), cationic (cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide CTAB) and non ionic (Triton X-100) surfactants at a sub lethal concentration of 1 ppm resulted in severe oxidative stress in the hepatic, renal and cardiac tissues of fresh water adapted Oreochromis mossambicus. Hepatic catalase showed significant increase (P<0.001) in all the surfactant exposed fish, but the renal enzyme was significantly increased only in CTAB dosed fish (P<0.001) and the cardiac enzyme showed significant increase in Triton (P<0.05) and CTAB dosed fish (P<0.001). SOD levels were significantly increased (P<0.001) in hepatic, renal and cardiac tissues of all the surfactant-treated fish. Glutathione reductase also was significantly increased (P<0.001) in the hepatic and renal tissues of surfactant dosed fish except cardiac tissues of CTAB exposed animals. Glutathione levels in the tissues studied were significantly higher in the surfactant treated animals (P<0.001) whereas malondialdehyde levels were significantly elevated only in the hepatic tissues of animals exposed to Triton (P<0.001). The surfactants based on their charge, antioxidant profile and in vivo metabolism may be arranged in the order of decreasing toxicity as CTAB > Triton > SDS. Thus it may be inferred from the present study that the antioxidant defenses and the in vivo metabolism of the surfactants are key factors in deciding the surfactant toxicity.  相似文献

A survey of Candida albicans indicated that the organism was present at all sites sampled in a rain forest stream and in near-shore coastal waters of Puerto Rico. In the rain forest watershed no relationship existed between densities of fecal coliforms and densities of C. albicans. At two pristine sites in the rain forest watershed both C. albicans and Escherichia coli survived in diffusion chambers for extended periods of time. In near-shore coastal waters C. albicans and E. coli survival times in diffusion chambers were enhanced by effluent from a rum distillery. The rum distillery effluent had a greater effect on E. coli than on C. albicans survival in the diffusion chambers. These studies show that neither E. coli nor C. albicans organisms are good indicators of recent fecal contamination in tropical waters. It further demonstrates that pristine freshwater environments and marine waters receiving organic loading in the tropics can support densities of C. albicans which may be a health hazard.  相似文献

We investigated the vertical stratification pattern of fatty acids in the blubber of the freshwater Saimaa ringed seal (Phoca hispida saimensis; n = 35). Blubber was dissected vertically into 3 mm thick sequential subsamples, and the fatty acid composition was analyzed separately for each subsample. The combined vertical fatty acid profiles (expressed as numerical gradients) showed that the blubber of > 1 year old individuals is stratified into three distinguishable layers: superficial (~ 1.5 cm), middle and deep (~ 1 cm). Thickness of the middle layer varied according to the total blubber thickness. We suggest that the observed layering is related to the differences in the tissue temperatures and metabolic activity in the blubber column. The dissimilarity in the fatty acid composition (measured as Euclidean distance) between the different blubber layers and the 5 most important fish prey species available in Lake Saimaa was largest in the superficial blubber. In fact, the fatty acid composition of superficial blubber resembled more that of marine ringed seal (Phoca hispida hispida) blubber than any of the analyzed fish species. The composition closest to that of the prey was found in the deep blubber of the Saimaa ringed seal. The large vertical differences in the fatty acid composition of blubber lipids, which likely affect the vertical distribution of other endogenous or exogenous lipophilic substances as well, will set conditions for the sampling of blubber for biomonitoring and dietary studies. Thus the knowledge on the potential layers with different composition and the depths they span in different individuals (e.g. young versus old; with thin versus thick blubber) is crucial for improving the validity and reliability of monitoring methods utilizing the blubber tissue.  相似文献

Priority effects occur when a species or genotype with earlier arrival has an advantage such that its relative abundance in the community or population is increased compared with later-arriving species. Few studies have dealt with this concept in the context of within-species competition. Skeletonema marinoi is a marine diatom that shows a high degree of genetic differentiation between populations over small geographical distances. To test whether historical events such as priority effects may have been important in inducing these patterns of population differentiation, we performed microcosm experiments with successive inoculation of different S. marinoi strains. Our results show that even in the absence of a numerical advantage, significant priority effects were evident. We propose that priority effects may be an important mechanism in initiating population genetic differentiation.  相似文献

Renal responses were quantified in northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) pups during their postweaning fast to examine their excretory capabilities. Pups were infused with either isotonic (0.9%; n = 8; Iso) or hypertonic (16.7%; n = 7; Hyper) saline via an indwelling catheter such that each pup received 3 mmol NaCl/kg. Diuresis after the infusions was similar in magnitude between the two treatments. Osmotic clearance increased by 37% in Iso and 252% in Hyper. Free water clearance was reduced 3.4-fold in Hyper but was not significantly altered in Iso. Glomerular filtration rate increased 71% in the 24-h period after Hyper, but no net change occurred during the same time after Iso. Natriuresis increased 3.6-fold in Iso and 5.3-fold in Hyper. Iso decreased plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) and cortisol acutely, whereas Hyper increased plasma and excreted AVP and cortisol. Iso was accompanied by the retention of water and electrolytes, whereas the Hyper load was excreted within 24 h. Natriuresis is attributed to increased filtration and is independent of an increase in atrial natriuretic peptide and decreases in ANG II and aldosterone. Fasting pups appear to have well-developed kidneys capable of both extreme conservation and excretion of Na(+).  相似文献

Elephant seals fast for prolonged periods without access to water. This is made possible, in part, by reductions in urine production. However, the mechanisms involved in reducing urine production are not understood. In this study, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was measured in five northern elephant seal pups (Mirounga angustirostris) via the inulin clearance technique. Measurements were made during day 9 and day 18-22 of nursing and the second and eighth week of the postweaning fast. Plasma aldosterone and cortisol concentrations, quantified by radioimmunoassay, were measured in eight other weanlings during the second and eighth week of the fast. Mean GFR was 79.3+/-29.3 ml/min during the early suckling period and 78.2+/-17.1, 89.8+/-52.7, and 80.4+/-12.2 ml/min during the late suckling, early fasting and late fasting periods, respectively. Differences between nursing and fasting were insignificant, possibly because reduced protein oxidation during suckling and rapid recruitment of protein for tissue synthesis obviated the need for postprandial hyperfiltration. Alternatively, maintenance of GFR during fasting may facilitate urea concentration by compensating for reductions in the fractional excretion of urea. It is further hypothesized that aldosterone is primarily responsible for mediating renal water reabsorption in this system.  相似文献

Studies were carried out to assess the sunlight sensitivity of Legionella pneumophila suspended in fresh and marine waters. Comparison studies on sunlight sensitivity of lake water bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecalis, were also undertaken. The effects of full sunlight and polyacrylic-screened sunlight were monitored in the study. Results indicate that L. pneumophila cells are slightly more sensitive to sunlight in seawater than in fresh water. Enumeration of sunlight-stressed bacteria in fresh water was found to be dependent on the medium used, and the following order of sensitivity to sunlight, from least to most sensitive, was noted: natural lake water bacteria, L. pneumophila, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and S. faecalis.  相似文献

Freshwater, male Atlantic stingrays Dasyatis sabina , from Lake Jesup, Florida, U·S·A·, excreted a dilute urine similar in composition to freshwater teleosts and lampreys with the exception that urea was the primary osmolyte. Urine flow rate was 2·5 to 10 fold higher than that reported for freshwater teleosts resulting in high free-water clearance. Mass-specific free-water clearance values from euryhaline elasmobranchs inhabiting freshwater environments greatly exceed those for freshwater teleosts and are nearly equivalent to those of freshwater lampreys.  相似文献

Many marine vertebrates, including pinnipeds, turtles and birds, spend periods of time ashore during their life cycles. Quantification of time spent ashore is important for estimating population parameters such as abundance and productivity in some species, but can prove to be a difficult task. Here we describe a novel telemetry system based on Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM), to provide detailed information on the haul-out behaviour of tagged animals. We tested the system on harbour seals in southwest Ireland. The GSM telemetry system proved an effective means of obtaining information on the haul-out activity of harbour seals in the study area and of providing crude movement information that was less labour intensive than VHF telemetry and provides an alternative means of data acquisition offering some advantages over satellite telemetry. The GSM tag with its internal antennae is more robust than a satellite tag. The GSM networks allow more information to be relayed, so the “cost per bit of data” is reduced. Moreover, the large global investment in GSM networks have resulted in a telemetry technology with low running costs and therefore with significantly lower costs of data acquisition via GSM relative to Argos systems. With the ever-expanding global GSM network coverage the system has significant potential applications in behavioural studies of amphibious vertebrates, such as estimating clutch frequency in sea turtles.  相似文献

A yearlong study was conducted to determine factors that affect the abundance and distribution of lysogens and free viruses at fresh-, brackish-, and saltwater stations in Newport Bay, CA. The viral and bacterial abundance were highest in the freshwater (average 1.1 × 108 and 1.1 × 107 mL−1, respectively) and lowest in the marine water (average 0.4 × 108 and 0.5 × 107 mL−1, respectively). Bacterial and viral counts were also several times higher during the summer than in winter. Approximately, 35% of the 141 samples were inducible in the presence of mitomycin C. The highest percentage of inducible lysogens was observed in marine waters (42%), while the lowest percentage was observed in the warmer freshwater (23%). A statistical model for the joint occurrence of lysogens and free viruses was formulated and estimated using Bayesian techniques to understand the key environmental determinants of viruses and lysogens. Our results support the existence of significant heterogeneity between the saltwater and freshwater sites. A parsimonious model that combines the two saltwater sites performs best among the specifications that were considered. Bacteria and water temperature were significant determinants of virus counts, whereas lysogen relationships are unclear. Importantly, conditional on the covariates, viruses and lysogen fractions exhibit robust negative correlation.  相似文献

Acute and chronic pulmonary and systemic hemodynamic responses to arginine vasopressin (AVP) were examined in 4-wk hypoxia-adapted and air control rats. AVP, administered intravenously as bolus injections or sustained infusions, produced major dose-dependent V1-receptor-mediated reductions in mean pulmonary arterial pressure in hypoxia-adapted rats. These effects were comparable in pentobarbital-anesthetized, thoracotomized animals and in conscious, intact rats. Chronic infusions of AVP induced a sustained reduction in mean pulmonary arterial pressure and partially prevented the development of pulmonary hypertension without changing systemic arterial pressure. AVP induced significant decreases in cardiac output in both groups; the cardiac output response was not significantly different in hypoxia-adapted and air control animals. AVP induced almost no change in MPAP in air control rats. Furthermore the systemic pressor effects of AVP were significantly blunted in hypoxia-adapted rats compared with air controls. We conclude that the pulmonary depressor and blunted systemic pressor effects of AVP observed in hypoxia-adapted rats may be related to release of a vasodilator, such as endothelium-derived relaxing factor, vasodilator prostaglandins, or atrial natriuretic peptides. Further study is needed to elucidate these mechanisms and assess the usefulness of AVP and/or its analogues in the treatment and prevention of hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension.  相似文献

A novel alphavirus was isolated from the louse Lepidophthirus macrorhini, collected from southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina, on Macquarie Island, Australia. The virus displayed classic alphavirus ultrastructure and appeared to be serologically different from known Australasian alphaviruses. Nearly all Macquarie Island elephant seals tested had neutralizing antibodies against the virus, but no virus-associated pathology has been identified. Antarctic Division personnel who have worked extensively with elephant seals showed no serological evidence of exposure to the virus. Sequence analysis illustrated that the southern elephant seal (SES) virus segregates with the Semliki Forest group of Australasian alphaviruses. Phylogenetic analysis of known alphaviruses suggests that alphaviruses might be grouped according to their enzootic vertebrate host class. The SES virus represents the first arbovirus of marine mammals and illustrates that alphaviruses can inhabit Antarctica and that alphaviruses can be transmitted by lice.  相似文献
