This paper documents an exercise to synthesize and assess the best available scientific knowledge on the effectiveness of different farm practices at enhancing natural pest regulation in agriculture. It demonstrates a novel combination of three approaches to evidence synthesis—systematic literature search, collated synopsis and evidence assessment using an expert panel. These approaches follow a logical sequence moving from a large volume of disparate evidence to a simple, easily understandable answer for use in policy or practice. The example of natural pest regulation in agriculture was selected as a case study within two independent science-policy interface projects, one European and one British. A third funder, a private business, supported the final stage to translate the synthesized findings into a useful, simplified output for agronomists. As a whole, the case study showcases how a network of scientific knowledge holders and knowledge users can work together to improve the use of science in policy and practice. The process identified five practices with good evidence of a benefit to natural pest regulation, with the most beneficial being ‘Combine trap and repellent crops in a push–pull system’. It highlights knowledge gaps, or potential research priorities, by showing practices considered important by stakeholders for which there is not enough evidence to make an assessment of effects on natural pest regulation, including ‘Alter the timing of pesticide application.’ Finally, the process identifies several important practices where the volume of evidence of effects on natural pest regulation was too large (>300 experimental studies) to be summarised with the resources available, and for which focused systematic reviews may be the best approach. Modelling groundwater depths in floodplains and peatlands remains a basic approach to assessing hydrological conditions of habitats. Groundwater flow models used to compute groundwater heads are known for their uncertainties, and the calibration of these models and the uncertainty assessments of parameters remain fundamental steps in providing reliable data. However, the elevation data used to determine the geometry of model domains are frequently considered deterministic and hence are seldom considered a source of uncertainty in model-based groundwater level estimations. Knowing that even the cutting-edge laser-scanning-based digital elevation models have errors due to vegetation effects and scanning procedure failures, we provide an assessment of uncertainty of water level estimations that remain basic data for wetland ecosystem assessment and management. We found that the uncertainty of the digital elevation model (DEM) significantly influenced the results of the assessment of the habitat’s hydrological conditions expressed as groundwater depths. In extreme cases, although the average habitat suitability index (HSI) assessed in a deterministic manner was defined as ‘unsuitable’, in a probabilistic approach (grid-cell-scale estimation), it reached a value of 40% probability, signifying ‘optimum’ or ‘tolerant’. For the 24 habitats analysed, we revealed vast differences between HSI scores calculated for individual grid cells of the model and HSI scores computed as average values from the set of grid cells located within the habitat patches. We conclude that groundwater-modelling-based decision support approaches to wetland assessment can result in incorrect management if the quality of DEM has not been addressed in studies referring to groundwater depths.  相似文献

This article reviews the history and current state of ethanol production from sugarcane in Brazil and presents a strategy for improving ecosystem services and production. We propose that it is possible to produce ethanol from sugarcane while maintaining or even recovering some of Brazil's unique neotropical biodiversity and ecosystem climate services. This approach to the future of sustainable and responsible ethanol production is termed the ‘midway’ strategy. The ‘midway’ strategy involves producing the necessary biotechnology to increase productivity while synergistically protecting and regenerating rainforest. Three main areas of scientific and technological advance that are key to realizing the ‘midway’ strategy are: (i) improving the quality of scientific data on sugarcane biology as pertains to its use as a bioenergy crop; (ii) developing technologies for the use of bagasse for cellulosic ethanol; and (iii) developing policies to improve the ecosystem services associated with sugarcane landscapes. This article discusses these three issues in the general context of biofuels production and highlights examples of scientific achievements that are already leading towards the ‘midway’ strategy.  相似文献

Many epistemological terms, such as investigation, inquiry, argument, evidence, and fact were established in law well before being associated with science. However, while legal proof remained qualified by standards of ‘moral certainty’, scientific proof attained a reputation for objectivity. Although most forms of legal evidence (including expert evidence) continue to be treated as fallible ‘opinions’ rather than objective ‘facts’, forensic DNA evidence increasingly is being granted an exceptional factual status. It did not always enjoy such status. Two decades ago, the scientific status of forensic DNA evidence was challenged in the scientific literature and in courts of law, but by the late 1990s it was being granted exceptional legal status. This paper reviews the ascendancy of DNA profiling, and argues that its widely-heralded objective status is bound up with systems of administrative accountability. The ‘administrative objectivity’ of DNA evidence rests upon observable and reportable bureaucratic rules, records, recording devices, protocols, and architectural arrangements. By highlighting administrative sources of objectivity, this paper suggests that DNA evidence remains bound within the context of ordinary organisational and practical routines, and is not a transcendent source of ‘truth’ in the criminal justice system.  相似文献

This paper aims to improve ecosystem assessment practice by sharing the lessons learned from the Flanders Regional Ecosystem Assessment. The ‘EU biodiversity strategy to 2020’, requests the EU member states ‘to map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services by 2014’. However, a large number of member states have yet to start this assessment, and depend on assistance from the European Commission and on experiences from ongoing national assessments. In the region of Flanders (Belgium), several ecosystem service projects have since 2009 led the way to the ‘Flanders Regional Ecosystem Assessment’ (Flanders-REA), led by the governments’ leading research institute on biodiversity. To attain high regional requirements on scientific quality, acceptance and effective local policy impact, this assessment has tackled a number of challenges. The challenges discussed in this paper are obtaining conceptual clarity and consensus across disciplines and partners, the integration of multiple sources of information, critical handling of maps and the inclusion of experts and stakeholders. This paper also critically reflects on the definition of EU targets, their implementation, the current EU assistance to the member states, and the alignment with actual local and global policy needs.  相似文献

An experiment was set up for (i) comparing Australian and French consumer preferences to beef and to (ii) quantify how well the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) grading model could predict the eating quality of beef in France. Six muscles from 18 Australian and 18 French cattle were tested as paired samples. In France, steaks were grilled ‘medium’ or ‘rare’, whereas in Australia ‘medium’ cooking was used. In total, 360 French consumers took part in the ‘medium’ cooking test, with each eating half Australian beef and half French beef and 180 French consumers tested the ‘rare’ beef. Consumers scored steaks for tenderness (tn), juiciness (ju), flavour liking (fl) and overall liking (ov). They also assigned a quality rating to each sample: ‘unsatisfactory’, ‘satisfactory everyday quality’ (3*), ‘better than everyday quality’ (4*) or ‘premium quality’ (5*). The prediction of the final ratings (3*, 4*, 5*) by the French consumers using the MSA-weighted eating quality score (0.3 tn + 0.1 ju + 0.3 fl + 0.3 ov) was over 70%, which is at least similar to the Australian experience. The boundaries between ‘unsatisfactory’, 3*, 4* and 5* were found to be ca. 38, 61 and 80, respectively. The differences between extreme classes are therefore slightly more important in France than in Australia. On average, even though it does not have predictive equations for bull meat, the mean predicted scores calculated by the MSA model deviated from observed values by a maximum of 5 points on a 0 to 100 scale except for the Australian oyster blade and the French topside, rump and outside (deviating by <15). Overall, the data indicate that it would be possible to manage a grading system in France as there is high agreement and consistency across consumers. The ‘rare’ and ‘medium’ results are also very similar, indicating that a common set of weightings and cut-offs can be employed.  相似文献

It was formerly argued that alternative evolutionarily stable strategies (ESSs) are possible for animal contests characterized by some asymmetry that can be perceived with perfect accuracy. Where roles A and B refer to the asymmetry between opponents, ESSs are: ‘fight when A, retreat when B’, and vice versa. Either can be an ESS, but only if the ‘reserve strategy’ (=what an animal does when it fights) is sufficiently damaging. We examine the ‘war of attrition’ (winner = opponent that persists longer). In a population at either ESS, reserve strategy is never normally shown; it is therefore subject to drift unless the selective action of rare individuals which break the convention is considered. These could arise either by mutation or by mistakes in role assessment. When mutations and mistakes simply specify that occasionally an animal fights when it ‘should’ retreat, selection adjusts reserve strategy to a level where only one ESS (the ‘commonsense’ ESS) is possible, if the asymmetry is relevant to payoff. Thus for asymmetries in fighting ability or resource value, the individual with the lower score will retreat. However, we are particularly concerned with cases where both payoff-relevant aspects (fighting ability and resource value) are asymmetric. If opponents sustain contest costs at rates KA and KB, and their resource values are VA and VB, an ‘optimal assessor’ strategy defined by the interaction between the two asymmetries, is a unique ESS. It obeys the rule ‘fight on estimating role A, where VA/KA>VB/KB; retreat in B’. If mistakes can occur in both roles, but are very rate, the ESS is not fundamentally altered though there will be infinitesimal tendencies for persisting in role B. Selection to improve assessment abilities intensifies as abilities improve, but is weak if roles A and B are rather similar. Over a range of similarity between roles, an ‘owner wins’ convention may be adopted if ownership correlates positively with role A and an individual cannot tell when it would otherwise pay him to break the convention. We also examine a contest in which information about roles can be acquired only during a contest itself, and at a cost. Much depends on the rate at which information is acquired relative to the rate at which costs are expended, and on whether contests normally escalate in intensity, remain at the same level, or de-escalate. Selection favours short contests when costs are high relative to resource value, where the outcome of a round contains much information about fighting ability, and where the actual disparity in fighting ability is large.  相似文献

The title of Beth Shapiro’s ‘How to Clone a Mammoth’ contains an implicature: it suggests that it is indeed possible to clone a mammoth, to bring extinct species back from the dead. But in fact Shapiro both denies this is possible, and denies there would be good reason to do it even if it were possible. The de-extinct ‘mammoths’ she speaks of are merely ecological proxies for mammoths—elephants re-engineered for cold-tolerance by the addition to their genomes of a few mammoth genes. Shapiro’s denial that genuine species de-extinction is possible is based on her assumption that resurrected organisms would need to be perfectly indistinguishable from the creatures that died out. In this article I use the example of an extinct New Zealand wattlebird, the huia, to argue—contra Shapiro—that there are compelling reasons to resurrect certain species if it can be done. I then argue—again, contra Shapiro—that synthetically created organisms needn’t be perfectly indistinguishable from their genetic forebears in order for species de-extinction to be successful.  相似文献

‘Ecosystem health’ is a relatively new concept for environmental science and management. Although at least two international journals use the term in their titles, there have been few applications of it for estuaries and soft-sediment habitats around the world. In this paper I: (i) introduce the ideas behind ecosystem health, and assess their relation with other usage such as ‘integrity’ or ‘quality’; (ii) sketch the sorts of multidisciplinary studies that could contribute to an assessment of health of an estuary and how these must be approached in developing useful indicators; and (iii) make a case for including measurements of the rates of ecological processes in such an assessment. These rate measurements, termed ‘ecoassays’, focus on important processes such as decomposition, recruitment, predator–prey interactions, and the like. A case study is introduced wherein these processes were assessed in mangrove stands of estuaries around Sydney, New South Wales, by explicitly comparing the rates of herbivory and decomposition of mangrove leaves, attack of fallen wood by shipworms, and colonization of pneumatophores by algae, as well as with more traditional estimates of ‘standing stocks’. Not surprisingly, the different measures retrieved various patterns and the challenge now is to integrate these into a scheme that indicates something of value. The potential utility of such measures is discussed in relation to the various scientific and managerial requirements of environmental monitoring.  相似文献

The enantioselective recognition of ‘remote’ stereogenic centers represents a scientific task in organic chemistry being also of current interest in the pharmaceutical industry. This is due to a range of pharmaceutically relevant molecules or intermediates thereof bearing a stereogenic center, which is separated from the functional group by a larger non-chiral moiety such as, for example, a longer sequence of bonds of at least three carbon or hetero-atoms or by a planar aromatic moiety. Notably, biocatalysis turned out to provide an excellent solution for a range of challenging syntheses in this field. For example, efficient enzymatic resolution processes of racemates with such a ‘remote’ stereogenic center were developed for the synthesis of pelitrexol, lasofoxifene and (S)-monastrol. In general, good yields accompanied by high enantioselectivities were obtained, thus underlining the tremendous potential of enzymes to recognize and enantioselectively transform enantiomers of racemates with ‘remote’ stereogenic centers. Such or similar types of stereoselective recognitions of ‘remote’ stereogenic centers by means of enzymes have been also reported in the field of flavor and vitamin synthesis. Thus, biocatalysis represents a promising solution for the efficient approach to enantiomerically pure complex chiral molecules with stereogenic centers being located apart from the functional group, and it can be expected that enzymatic resolution will be increasingly applied when searching for an efficient and also technically feasible process for also novel complex chiral molecules bearing a ‘remote’ stereogenic center.  相似文献

This article explores the usefulness of interdisciplinarity as method of enquiry by proposing an investigation of the concept of information in the light of semiotics. This is because, as Kull, Deacon, Emmeche, Hoffmeyer and Stjernfelt state, information is an implicitly semiotic term (Biological Theory 4(2):167–173, 2009: 169), but the logical relation between semiosis and information has not been sufficiently clarified yet. Across the history of cybernetics, the concept of information undergoes an uneven development; that is, information is an ‘objective’ entity in first order cybernetics, and becomes a ‘subjective’ entity in second order cybernetics. This contradiction relegates the status of information to that of a ‘true’ or ‘false’ formal logic problem. The present study proposes that a solution to this contradiction can be found in Deely’s reconfiguration of Peirce’s ‘object’ (as found in his triadic model of semiosis) into ‘thing’ and ‘object’ (Deely 1981). This ontology allows one to argue that information is neither ‘true’ nor ‘false’, and to suggest that, when considered in light of its workability, information can be both true and false, and as such it constitutes an organism’s purely objective reality (Deely 2009b). It is stated that in the process of building such a reality, information is ‘motivated’ by environmental, physiological, emotional (including past feelings and expectations) constraints which are, in turn, framed by observership. Information is therefore found in the irreducible cybersemiotic process that links at once all these conditions and that is simultaneously constrained by them. The integration of cybernetics’ and semiotics’ understanding of information shows that history is the analytical principle that grants scientific rigour to interdisciplinary investigations. As such, in any attempt to clarify its epistemological stance (e.g. the semiotic aspect of information), it is argued that biosemiotics does not need only to acknowledge semiotics (as it does), but also cybernetics in its interdisciplinary heritage.  相似文献

Although diatoms are important bioindicators of ecological quality, their ecological traits are still not well understood. A major issue is that of substrate preferences, which may result in differences in production, and assemblage structure and composition, and which should therefore be taken into account for ecological quality assessment studies. Thus, in this work, the periphyton grown on sand and ceramic tiles in indoor controlled channels were compared to understand whether substrate differences lead to differences in: periphyton production (chlorophyll-a), chlorophyll-b and c concentrations, diatom assemblages (diversity-Shannon-Wiener, cell density, taxonomic composition, trait proportions), and ecological quality assessments (IPS-‘Indice de Polluosensibilité Spécifique’). A combined inoculum of periphyton from four Portuguese streams was introduced to the running channels (six sand and six tile) and left to colonize for 35 days. Epilithic (tiles) and epipsammic (sand) assemblages were sampled at days 14 and 35. We verified that there were no differences in chlorophyll-a concentration over time and between substrates. On both sampling occasions, the epipsammic assemblages had higher concentration of chlorophyll-c and diatom density but without significant differences over time in each substrate. The taxonomic composition was different between substrates and over time. However, these differences were not reflected in ecological quality assessment. The diversity was also similar between substrates in both sampling occasions, but it was higher at day 14. Mobile and stalked species were more abundant over the entire study and differed significantly between substrates, with the epipsammic assemblages presenting higher abundances of both traits. We concluded that the colonizing substrate influences diatom assemblages but not the ecological quality assessment.  相似文献

Seed predators that severely affect seed germination rates are well known for many plant species. Here, we hypothesised that due to differences in resource allocation within fruits, seed predation can negatively affect non-predated seeds in infested fruits when predation occurs during fruit maturation (a ‘top-down’ effect). We addressed this question using a system of bruchid beetles on Mimosa trees and we also investigated whether seed quality (nitrogen concentration) affects beetle body mass, which would have implications for adult fitness (‘bottom-up’ effect). To assess spatial variation, bottom-up and top-down effects were investigated in two plant populations. Nitrogen concentration was significantly higher in seeds from non-infested fruits than from infested fruits. This supports the hypothesis that resource allocation may differ between seeds from infested and non-infested fruits. Germination experiments showed that seeds from non-infested fruits germinated better than non-predated seeds from infested fruits. It was also confirmed that seed quality affected bruchid body mass. There was also evidence that more resources were taken from well-developed seeds. These results showed that seed predation can damage non-predated seeds.  相似文献

The rapeseed plant (Brassica napus) is one of the top five oil-producing crops in the world. However, its potential for global cultivation is limited due to its sensitivity to cold. We selected five varieties of rapeseed popular in Korea and analyzed their sensitivity to cold stress. Three — ‘Naehan’, ‘Sandongchae’, and ‘Yudal’ — proved more tolerant than the other two — ‘Youngsan’ and ‘Tammi’. Because rapeseed is in the same family (Brassicacae) as Arabidopsis, one would expect that both share similar genes, with protein coding sequences that show >86% homology. We used a cDNA microarray enriched with Arabidopsis cold stress-related genes to examine the molecular background for differences in sensitivity among rapeseed varieties. Their hierarchical clustering patterns for expression were highly correlated with their cold-sensitive phenotypes. For example, expression patterns were similar between ‘Naehan’ and ‘Sandongchae’ as well as between ‘Yudal’ and our Arabidopsis samples. Using co-expression gene sets developed in this laboratory, we further analyzed expression patterns for three cultivars. Three distinct gene sets were commonly enriched in ‘Naehan’ against ‘Youngsan’ and ‘Tammi’, indicating that they could be the core gene sets that confer a high degree of cold tolerance in ‘Naehan’. Knockout plants with down-regulated expression of GSTF2, TRXh5, LTI30, and LACS4 were highly cold-sensitive whereas overexpression of those four genes led to a reversal of this sensitivity. In fact, overexpression of GSTF2 and LTI30 enhanced tolerance, with plants that over-expressed GSTF2 having extremely high tolerance that enabled them to acclimate almost completely to freezing conditions. By comparison, only about 40% of the wild type demonstrated a similar acclimation. Therefore, the genes described here could be useful in furthering our knowledge about other stress responses in rapeseed, thereby facilitating the production of cold-tolerant plants.  相似文献

The levels of haematocrit (Hct) and plasma haemoglobin (Hb) vary markedly through the annual cycle of birds, as well as among individuals at all life‐stages (embryos, chicks, adults). It is thus surprising that the functional, fitness‐related consequences of this variation are poorly understood. Putative ‘adaptive’ variation in these haematological traits has been associated with varying demands for aerobic capacity and oxygen transport, for example during migration, winter acclimatization, with increasing altitude, or during parental care. It has also been proposed that changes in Hct might reflect ‘costs’ of parental investment, for example during ‘reproductive anaemia’. However, almost all studies to date have been correlative. Here we describe a series of experiments that validate the use of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride (PHZ) for the transient, reversible experimental manipulation of Hct and Hb in birds. A single bolus injection (12.5 μg PHZ/g body weight delivered via intra‐muscular injection) caused a rapid decrease in Hct and plasma Hb within 24 h, from pretreatment values of 50–54% to 40–44% in non‐breeding Zebra Finches Taenipoygia guttata and European Starlings Sturnus vulgaris, and to 35% in breeding female Zebra Finches, changes within the normal physiological range. Hct and Hb returned to pre‐injection levels within 5–10 days of treatment. Changes in plasma Hb paralleled those for Hct. We suggest that PHZ treatment provides a widely applicable technique for use in experimental work to establish relationships between haematological status, aerobic capacity, workload (e.g. migration, parental care, thermoregulation), individual quality (of both adults and chicks) and trade‐offs such as costs of reproduction.  相似文献

This paper contains a game theoretical analysis of animal contest situations which are asymmetric in more than one aspect: two opponents may for example be imagined which differ in ‘ownership status’ as well as in ‘relative fighting ability’. The following question is analysed: which aspect may or must be used for conventional settlement in a population ‘playing’ an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS)? The contestants are assumed to be fully informed about the asymmetric features. In particular, the assessment of relative fighting ability is supposed to be unambiguous and without cost. This assumption of perfect information allows for a decomposition of the ‘evolutionary game’ into sub-games. Therefore an easy procedure for calculating the ESS's can be presented, and simple models are analysed. It is concluded that payoff-irrelevant aspects may be used for conventional settlement of a conflict even if payoff-relevant asymmetric aspects also exist. One of the aspects may, however, be of such strong relevance that, no matter which ESS is played, animals must base their decisions on that ‘dominant’ aspect. It may also occur that two different asymmetric features are each of strong payoff relevance for either of the opponents, such that they have no escalation-suppressing effect. The particular scenario of a conflict between an ‘owner of a resource’ and an ‘intruder’ is used to derive the more general conclusions.  相似文献

This paper is the first in a series to experimentally examine factors which determine the location of parasites within their hosts. Nippostrongylus brasiliensis is typically found one third of the way along the small intestine of the rat between days 7 and 12 of a primary infection. When rats were fasted for 2 days, N. brasiliensis became evenly distributed along the intestine and many individuals, mostly females, entered the caecum. Upon being fed again, the parasites were at their ‘normal site’ within 24 h. Experimental diets of α-cellulose, or simple dietary compounds caused the same re-distribution as did normal food. By sectioning the rat intestine when it was full of food and relating the dispersion of worms to the presence of intestinal contents, it was confirmed that N. brasiliensis is found amongst the intestinal contents of its host. The notion of a ‘site’ is critically discussed and the merit of ‘habitat’ is argued because the ‘site’ of N. brasiliensis would appear to be less a ‘place’ but rather a combination of environmental factors.  相似文献

Sharka disease, caused by Plum pox virus (PPV) was first recorded in Bulgaria during the early twentieth century and since that first report, the disease has progressively spread throughout Europe and more recently to Asia, Africa, North and South America. Few PPV resistance genes have been found to naturally occur in Prunus and this has led to the investigation of biotech approaches to the development of resistance through genetic engineering (GE). A notable example of the utility of this approach is ‘HoneySweet’ plum. PPV protection in this case is based on RNA interference (RNAi) and resistance has been shown to be highly effective, stable, durable, and heritable as a dominant trait. Extensive testing and risk assessment of ‘HoneySweet’ in laboratory, greenhouse and in the field for over 20 years has demonstrated not only the effectiveness but also the safety of the technology. ‘HoneySweet’ has been cleared for cultivation in the USA. By the appropriate regulatory agencies. The development and regulatory approval of ‘HoneySweet’ demonstrate the ability of RNAi technology to contribute to the sustainability of stone fruit production in regions impacted by PPV. Although it has taken almost 100 years since the identification of sharka, we are now able to effectively protect stone fruit species against this disease through the application of GE.  相似文献
