Visually-induced illusions of self-motion (vection) can be compelling for some people, but they are subject to large individual variations in strength. Do these variations depend, at least in part, on the extent to which people rely on vision to maintain their postural stability? We investigated by comparing physical posture measures to subjective vection ratings. Using a Bertec balance plate in a brightly-lit room, we measured 13 participants'' excursions of the centre of foot pressure (CoP) over a 60-second period with eyes open and with eyes closed during quiet stance. Subsequently, we collected vection strength ratings for large optic flow displays while seated, using both verbal ratings and online throttle measures. We also collected measures of postural sway (changes in anterior-posterior CoP) in response to the same visual motion stimuli while standing on the plate. The magnitude of standing sway in response to expanding optic flow (in comparison to blank fixation periods) was predictive of both verbal and throttle measures for seated vection. In addition, the ratio between eyes-open and eyes-closed CoP excursions during quiet stance (using the area of postural sway) significantly predicted seated vection for both measures. Interestingly, these relationships were weaker for contracting optic flow displays, though these produced both stronger vection and more sway. Next we used a non-linear analysis (recurrence quantification analysis, RQA) of the fluctuations in anterior-posterior position during quiet stance (both with eyes closed and eyes open); this was a much stronger predictor of seated vection for both expanding and contracting stimuli. Given the complex multisensory integration involved in postural control, our study adds to the growing evidence that non-linear measures drawn from complexity theory may provide a more informative measure of postural sway than the conventional linear measures.  相似文献

A study was designed to investigate the intra and intersession reliability during 1-leg standing recorded from a computerized balance platform. Thirty-nine healthy young men (n = 17, age range: 20-30 years) and women (n = 22, age range: 21-28 years) performed 3 testing sessions, with the second session 30 minutes (intrasession comparison) and the third session 1 week (intersession comparison) after the initial testing session. Within each testing session, participants completed 3 trials of 1-leg standing with their dominant leg. Reliability statistics were calculated using the mean of all 3 trials during each session for 6 balance measures (i.e., total displacements of the center of pressure [CoP], the CoP displacements in mediolateral and anterior-posterior directions, and the CoP speed and CoP area and their SD). Test-retest reliability was examined calculating both, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and Bland-Altman plots. In both sexes and irrespective of balance measure, ICC values were ≥0.75 except for 1 parameter in men. This indicates an excellent intra and intersession reliability. Bland-Altman plots confirmed these findings by showing that only 1 or 2 (4.5-11.8%) of the data points were beyond the 95% CI. Practitioners and clinicians are provided with a posturographic test setup that proved to be reliable. Researchers can use these data to identify the range in which the true value of a subject's score lies and estimate a priori sample sizes.  相似文献

Postural stability has traditionally been examined through spatial measures of the center of mass (CoM) or center of pressure (CoP), where larger amounts of CoM or CoP movements are considered signs of postural instability. However, for stabilization, the postural control system may utilize additional information about the CoM or CoP such as velocity, acceleration, and the temporal margin to a stability boundary. Postural time-to-contact (TtC) is a variable that can take into account this additional information about the CoM or CoP. Postural TtC is the time it would take the CoM or CoP, given its instantaneous trajectory, to contact a stability boundary. This is essentially the time the system has to reverse any perturbation before stance is threatened. Although this measure shows promise in assessing postural stability, the TtC values derived between studies are highly ambiguous due to major differences in how they are calculated. In this study, various methodologies used to assess postural TtC were compared during quiet stance and induced-sway conditions. The effects of the different methodologies on TtC values will be assessed, and issues regarding the interpretation of TtC data will also be discussed.  相似文献

The present study was designed to assess the relative contribution of each leg to unperturbed bipedal posture in lower limb amputees. To achieve this goal, eight unilateral traumatic trans-femoral amputees (TFA) were asked to stand as still as possible on a plantar pressure data acquisition system with their eyes closed. Four dependent variables were computed to describe the subject's postural behavior: (1) body weight distribution, (2) amplitude, (3) velocity and (4) regularity of centre of foot pressure (CoP) trajectories under the amputated (A) leg and the non-amputated (NA) leg. Results showed a larger body weight distribution applied to the NA leg than to the A leg and a more regular CoP profiles (lower sample entropy values) with greater amplitude and velocity under the NA leg than under the A leg. Taken together, these findings suggest that the NA leg and the A leg do not equally contribute to the control of unperturbed bipedal posture in TFA. The observation that TFA do actively control unperturbed bipedal posture with their NA leg could be viewed as an adaptive process to the loss of the lower leg afferents and efferents because of the unilateral lower-limb amputation. From a methodological point of view, these results demonstrate the suitability of computing bilateral CoP trajectories regularity for the assessment of lateralized postural control under pathological conditions.  相似文献

Life zones and their changes in distribution in north-east China were studied based on climate–vegetation relationships. The warmth index (WI) and aridity index (the ratio of evaporation [evaporation rate, ER] to precipitation) were used to represent the site condition. The typical site condition of each vegetation type was determined as the classification criterion. The boundaries of the four potential vegetation zones were estimated based on the combinations of WI and ER in relation to vegetation (i.e. cold-temperate conifer forest zone, temperate broad-leaved conifer mixed forest zone, warm-temperate deciduous forest zone, and temperate steppe zone). The distribution changes in vegetation zone caused by human activities were estimated by comparing the potential vegetation with the actual one. The percentage cover of forest has shrunk from about 70% to the present 27%. About 23% of the study area was replaced by agricultural vegetation and industrial use. Nearly half of the region could have been covered by broad-leaved conifer mixed forest which was shrunk to a small area, less than 5% of the region. The broad-leaved deciduous forest zone in the southern part could have occupied about 7% of the area, and had almost no virgin stand.  相似文献

Independent stance is one of the most difficult motor milestones to achieve. Newly standing infants exhibit exaggerated body movements and can only stand for a brief amount of time. Given the difficult nature of bipedal stance, these unstable characteristics are slow to improve. However, we demonstrate that infants can increase their stability when engaged in a standing goal-directed task. Infants'' balance was measured while standing and while standing and holding a visually attractive toy. When holding the toy, infants stood for a longer period of time, exhibited less body sway, and more mature postural dynamics. These results demonstrate that even with limited standing experience, infants can stabilize posture to facilitate performance of a concurrent task.  相似文献

We studied leaf area and nitrogen dynamics in the canopy of stands of an annual herb Xanthium canadense, grown at a high (HN)- and a low-nitorgen (LN) availability. Standing leaf area increased continuously through the vegetative growth period in the LN stand, or leveled off in the later stage in the HN stand. When scaled against standing leaf area, both production and loss rates of leaf area increased but with different patterns: the production rate was retarded, while the loss rate was accelerated, implying an upper limit of standing leaf area of the canopy. The rate of leaf-area production was higher in the HN than in the LN stand, which was caused by the higher rate of leaf production per standing leaf area as well as the greater standing leaf area in the HN stand. Although the rate of leaf-area loss was higher in the HN than in the LN stand, it was not significantly different between the two stands when compared at a common standing leaf area, suggesting involvement of light climate in determination of the leaf-loss rate. On the other hand, the rate of leaf-area loss was positively correlated with nitrogen demand for leaf area development across the two stands, suggesting that leaf loss was caused by retranslocation of nitrogen for construction of new leaves. A simple simulation model of leaf and nitrogen dynamics in the canopy showed that, at steady state, where the rate of leaf-area loss becomes equal to the production rate, the standing leaf area was still greater in the HN than in the LN stand. Similarly, when the uptake and loss of nitrogen are equilibrated, the standing nitrogen was greater in the HN than in the LN stand. These results suggest that leaf-area production is strongly controlled by nitrogen availability, while both nitrogen and light climate determine leaf-loss rates in the canopy.  相似文献

Forest stands growing around sawmills are especially exposed to damage due to the feeding by the pine shoot beetles Tomicus piniperda (L.) and Tomicus minor (Hart.) (Col., Scolytidae) in the pine shoots, causing a considerable loss of increment. The purpose of this study was to determine the relation of the distance zone of a stand from a sawmill to the density of the pine shoot fall, width of annual rings, and pine stand quality. The investigations were carried out between 1992 and 1996 in a Pinus silvestris – Abies alba stand adjacent to a sawmill in the Zagnańsk Forest District. In the investigated stand, eight zones situated at different distances from the sawmill were marked out, in which the fallen pine shoots were collected and dendrometric measurements taken. The study results showed that the pine shoot fall in the area up to 300 m away from the sawmill was significantly greater than the fall in zones situated further away. In addition, the mean current annual and 10-year radial increments at breast height were significantly smaller, and the pine stand quality class was lower within that area. The radial increment at breast height in the area up to 300 m away from the sawmill was almost twice as low as that in the control area, and about 40% lower than the increment in the area situated 300–900 m away. The increment pattern of pine in this area differed from that of fir, suggesting that the incremental loss and lower pine stand quality are the result of long-term feeding of the pine shoot beetles in the pine shoots. These results indicate that other causes, such as differences in site class, climatic factors or air pollution, can be excluded.  相似文献

The influence of light passive contact of the forearm with a pliable external object (flexible plate) on the maintenance of upright posture was studied in healthy subjects in several conditions, with the eyes closed and on immersion in a virtual visual environment (VVE). The visual environment was either stable or unstable as a result of a synphase (SP) or antiphase (AP) association between the environment and body sway. The posture maintenance analysis focused on estimating the amplitude and frequency characteristics of two elementary variables, which were calculated from the foot center of pressure (CoP) trajectories in the mediolateral and anteroposterior directions. The variables were trajectory of the vertical projection of the center of gravity (variable CG) and difference between the CoP and CG trajectories (variable CoP–CG). In both the absence and presence of passive tactile contact, the root mean square (RMS) values of the oscillation spectra of the two variables were the lowest in the stable visual environment and in the case of the antiphase association of the environment with body sways and the highest in the cases of the synphase association and standing with the eyes closed. Passive contact decreased body sways in both directions, and the RMSs of the spectra of the two variables decreased in all visual conditions. A greater decrease in RMS was observed for the CG variable. Body sways changed not only in amplitude, but also in frequency. Tactile contact increased the median frequencies (MFs) of the CG variable spectra calculated from the anteroposterior and mediolateral body sways. In contrast, a significant increase in MFs calculated for the CoP–CG variable was observed only for anteroposterior body sways. The results showed that passive contact of a forearm with a pliable external object, which does not provide a mechanical support for the subject, significantly improves the maintenance of the upright posture even in an unstable visual environment.  相似文献

Standing by means of functional electrical stimulation (FES) after spinal cord injury is a topic widely reported in the neurorehabilitation literature. This practice commonly uses surface stimulation over the quadriceps muscle to evoke knee extension. To date, most FES neuroprostheses still operate without any artificial feedback, meaning that after a fatigue-driven knee buckle event, the stimulation amplitude or pulse width must be increased manually via button presses to re-establish knee-lock. This is often referred to as ‘hand-controlled (HC) operation’. In an attempt to provide a safer, yet clinically practical approach, this study proposed two novel strategies to automate the control of knee extension based on the kinematic feedback of four miniaturised motion sensors. These strategies were compared to the traditional HC strategy on four individuals with complete paraplegia. The standing times observed over multiple trials were in general longer for the automated strategies when compared to HC (0.5–80%). With the automated strategies, three of the subjects tended to need less upper body support over a frame to maintain balance. A stability analysis based on centre of pressure (CoP) measurements also favoured the automated strategies. This analysis also revealed that although FES standing with the assistance of a frame was likely to be safe for the subjects, their stability was still inferior to that of able-bodied individuals. Overall, the unpredictability of knee buckle events could be more effectively controlled by automated FES strategies to re-establish knee-lock when compared to the traditional user-controlled approach, thus demonstrating the safety and clinical efficacy of an automated approach.  相似文献

Understanding the mechanisms that enforce, maintain or reverse the process of speciation is an important challenge in evolutionary biology. This study investigates the patterns of divergence and discusses the processes that form and maintain divergent lineages of the tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes fuscipes in Uganda. We sampled 251 flies from 18 sites spanning known genetic lineages and the four admixture zones between them. We apply population genomics, hybrid zone and approximate Bayesian computation to the analysis of three types of genetic markers: 55,267 double‐digest restriction site‐associated DNA (ddRAD) SNPs to assess genome‐wide admixture, 16 microsatellites to provide continuity with published data and accurate biogeographic modelling, and a 491‐bp fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and II to infer maternal inheritance patterns. Admixture zones correspond with regions impacted by the reorganization of Uganda's river networks that occurred during the formation of the West African Rift system over the last several hundred thousand years. Because tsetse fly population distributions are defined by rivers, admixture zones likely represent both old and new regions of secondary contact. Our results indicate that older hybrid zones contain mostly parental types, while younger zones contain variable hybrid types resulting from multiple generations of interbreeding. These findings suggest that reproductive barriers are nearly complete in the older admixture zones, while nearly absent in the younger admixture zones. Findings are consistent with predictions of hybrid zone theory: Populations in zones of secondary contact transition rapidly from early to late stages of speciation or collapse all together.  相似文献

Information about the welfare and husbandry of pet and laboratory fish is scarce although millions of fish are sold in pet shops and used in laboratory research every year. Inadequate housing conditions can cause behavioural problems also in fish since they are complex animals with sophisticated behaviour. In this study, we investigated the influence of environmental complexity on compartment preference and behaviour in zebrafish (Danio rerio) and checker barbs (Puntius oligolepis). For the preference test, large aquaria were divided by two semi-transparent walls of Plexiglas into an empty compartment, a structured compartment enriched with plants and clay pots, and a smaller compartment in-between, where food was provided. For observation, the empty and structured compartments were divided into six zones of similar size by defining three vertical layers and two horizontal areas (back vs. front area). Seven groups of six to nine zebrafish and seven groups of seven or eight checker barbs were observed on four days each (within a time period of ten days) to assess compartment use and activity, and to assess behavioural diversity and use of zones within compartments. Both zebrafish and checker barbs showed a significant preference for the structured compartment. Nevertheless, in neither species did behavioural diversity differ between the empty and structured compartment. Zebrafish used all zones in both compartments to the same extent. Checker barbs, however, used the structured compartment more evenly than the empty compartment, where they mainly used the lower and middle zones. These results suggest that zebrafish and checker barbs have a preference for complex environments. Furthermore, they indicate that the behavioural and ecological needs of fish may vary depending on species, and recommendations for husbandry should be specified at species level.  相似文献

Objective

Previous studies have demonstrated that ankle muscle fatigue alters postural sway. Our aim was to better understand postural control mechanisms during upright stance following plantar flexor fatigue.

Method

Ten healthy young volunteers, 25.7 ± 2.2 years old, were recruited. Foot center-of-pressure (CoP) displacement data were collected during narrow base upright stance and eyes closed (i.e. blindfolded) conditions. Subjects were instructed to stand upright and as still as possible on a force platform under five test conditions: (1) non-fatigue standing on firm surface; (2) non-fatigue standing on foam; (3) ankle plantar flexor fatigue, standing on firm surface; (4) ankle plantar flexor fatigue, standing on foam; and (5) upper limb fatigue, standing on firm surface. An average of the ten 30-s trials in each of five test conditions was calculated to assess the mean differences between the trials. Traditional measures of postural stability and stabilogram-diffusion analysis (SDA) parameters were analyzed.

Results

Traditional center of pressure parameters were affected by plantar flexor fatigue, especially in the AP direction. For the SDA parameters, plantar flexor fatigue caused significantly higher short-term diffusion coefficients, and critical displacement in both mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) directions. Long-term postural sway was different only in the AP direction.

Conclusions

Localized plantar flexor fatigue caused impairment to postural control mainly in the Sagittal plane. The findings indicate that postural corrections, on average, occurred at a higher threshold of sway during plantar flexor fatigue compared to non-fatigue conditions.  相似文献

Abstract Bombina bombina and B. variegata are two anciently diverged toad taxa that have adapted to different breeding habitats yet hybridize freely in zones of overlap where their parapatric distributions meet. Here, we report on a joint genetic and ecological analysis of a hybrid zone in the vicinity of Stryi in western Ukraine. We used five unlinked allozyme loci, two nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms and a mitochondrial DNA haplotype as genetic markers. Parallel allele frequency clines with a sharp central step occur across a sharp ecotone, where transitions in aquatic habitat, elevation, and terrestrial vegetation coincide. The width of the hybrid zone, estimated as the inverse of the maximum gradient in allele frequency, is 2.3 km. This is the smallest of four estimates derived from different clinal transects across Europe. We argue that the narrow cline near Stryi is mainly due to a combination of habitat distribution and habitat preference. Adult toads show a preference for either ponds ( B. bombina ) or puddles ( B. variegata ), which is known to affect the distribution of genotypes within the hybrid zones. At Stryi, it should cause a reduction of the dispersal rate across the ecotone and thus narrow the cline. A detailed comparison of all five intensively studied Bombina transects lends support to the hypothesis that habitat distribution plus habitat preference can jointly affect the structure of hybrid zones and, ultimately, the resulting barriers to gene flow between differentiated gene pools. This study also represents a resampling of an area that was last studied more than 70 years ago. Our allele-frequency clines largely coincide with those that were described then on the basis of morphological variation. However, we found asymmetrical introgression of B. variegata genes into B. bombina territory along the bank of a river.  相似文献

A method to determine the mechanical time-constant distribution of the lung during a forced expiration manoeuvre is proposed. The method is based on a least squares algorithm constrained to give reasonably smooth non-negative solutions. The smoothing constraint was imposed by minimizing the second derivative of the distribution function in accordance with the physiological meaning of the time-constant distribution. Nevertheless, the obtained solution depends greatly on the relative weights of the two terms in the objective function to be minimized i.e., the error on the fit of the volume signal and the smoothness of the distribution function. To select the optimum smoothing weight, a criterion based on the stability of the reconstructed distribution shape was defined. The performance of the algorithm and that of the defined criterion were evaluated by using simulated signals of forced expired volume. The error of reconstructed distributions was quantified by means of the area enclosed between this distribution and the original one used to generate the simulated volume signal. The results obtained showed that for all the analyzed signals: (1) There is a value of the weight of the smoothing constraint which gives rise to a solution that is optimum in a least squares sense. (2) The proposed stabilization criterion enables us to approach this optimum solution from experimental signals.  相似文献

以哈尔滨市及东部郊区为对象,重点研究城乡土地梯度带的划分以及造成这种景观分异的内在机制,特别是对镶嵌在城市到乡村之间土地类型的数量变化,研究土地景观结构的特点.研究区范围东西35km,南北16km,在GIS平台上使用TM与SPOT卫星图像划分出东西2.5km,南北16km大小的14条等面积的连续梯度带,根据等面积梯度带的建筑密度和道路密度将研究区域划分为市区、近郊区、远郊区3个梯度区.应用计算机目视判读方法对研究区内进行了土地类型的识别及区划,利用GIS空间分析,计算了各种梯度带的内的不同土地类型的长度、面积.通过这些计算与分析研究了哈尔滨市及东部城乡之间不同梯度带的绿地景观空间结构特点,以绿地建设为核心,辅以城市景观结构及空间格局的特点,分析讨论不同城乡梯度带景观分异的成因.研究表明,区域道路密度和建筑物密度可以在一定程度上反应出城市化进程,据此将哈尔滨及东部城乡划分为市区、近郊区和远郊区;不同梯度区域有其各自的人文景观结构特点和绿地景观结构特点,讨论了造成这种梯度特征的内在机制,并对研究区域未来的城乡绿地及景观建设和可持续发展提出了建议.  相似文献

We investigated how postural responses to galvanic vestibular stimulation were affected by standing on a translating support surface and by somatosensory loss due to diabetic neuropathy. We tested the hypothesis that an unstable surface and somatosensory loss can result in an increase of vestibulospinal sensitivity. Bipolar galvanic vestibular stimulation was applied to subjects who were standing on a force platform, either on a hard, stationary surface or during a backward platform translation (9 cm, 4.2 cm/s). The intensity of the galvanic stimulus was varied from 0.25 to 1 mA. The amplitude of the peak body CoP displacement in response to the galvanic stimulus was plotted as a function of stimulus intensity for each individual. A larger increase in CoP displacement to a given increase in galvanic current was interpreted as an increase of vestibulospinal sensitivity. Subjects with somatosensory loss in the feet due to diabetes showed higher vestibulospinal sensitivity than healthy subjects when tested on a stationary support surface. Control subjects and patients with somatosensory loss standing on translating surface also showed increased galvanic response gains compared to stance on a stationary surface. The severity of the somatosensory loss in the feet correlated with the increased postural sensitivity to galvanic vestibular stimulation. These results showed that postural responses to galvanic vestibular stimulus were modified by somatosensory information from the surface. Somatosensory loss due to diabetic neuropathy and alteration of somatosensory input during stance on translating support surface resulted in increased vestibulospinal sensitivity.  相似文献

Secondary contact between closely related taxa routinely occurs during postglacial migrations. After initial contact, the location of hybrid zones may shift geographically or remain spatially stable over time in response to various selective pressures or neutral processes. Studying the extent and direction of introgression using markers having contrasted levels of gene flow can help unravel the historical dynamics of hybrid zones. Thanks to their contrasted maternal and paternal inheritance, resulting in different levels of gene flow for mitochondrial and chloroplast DNA (mtDNA and cpDNA), the Pinaceae stand out as a relevant biological model for this purpose. The objective of the study was to assess whether the hybrid zone between Abies balsamea and Abies lasiocarpa (two largely distributed Pinaceae) has moved or remained stable over time by analysing the distribution of cytoplasmic DNA variation as well as published palaeobotanical data. Interspecific gene flow was higher for cpDNA than mtDNA markers; hence, the geographic distribution of mitotypes was more congruent with species distributions than chlorotypes. This genetic signature was contrary to expectations under a moving hybrid zone scenario, as well as empirical observations in other conifers. Genetic evidence for this rare instance of stable hybrid zone was corroborated by the colonization chronology derived from published fossil data, indicating that the two fir species initially came into contact in the area corresponding to the current sympatric zone 11 kyr ago. While an explanatory analysis suggested the putative influence of various environmental factors on the relative abundance of cytoplasmic genome combinations, further research appears necessary to assess the role of both demographic history and selective factors in driving the dynamics of hybrid zones.  相似文献
