The range of salmonella serotypes found in sewage sludge and in the faeces of black headed gulls ( Larus ribibundus ) feeding on the sludge was investigated. A close association was demonstrated between the serotypes found in both types of sample. Salmonella takoradi (a serotype which is uncommon in Scotland) appeared in the sludge for two short periods during the twelve week study and on both occasions it was later found in the gull faeces. It was shown that gulls become infected after feeding on contaminated sewage sludge but that the infection is probably shortlived.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to determine if viruses were selectively eliminated during waste water treatment. Human enteric viruses were detected at all steps of treatment in a conventional activated sludge waste water treatment plant. Liquid overlays and large volume sampling with multiple passages on BGM cells permitted the detection of poliovirus (serotypes 1, 2, and 3), coxsackievirus B (serotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5), and echovirus (serotypes 3, 14, and 22), as well as reoviruses. The mean virus concentration was 95.1 most probable number of infectious units per litre (mpniu/L) in raw sewage, 23.3 in settled water, 1.4 in effluent after activated sludge treatment, and 40.3 mpniu/L in sludge samples. All samples of raw sewage and settled water, 79% of effluent water, and 94% of sludge samples contained viruses. The mean reduction was 75% after settling and 98% after activated sludge treatment. Poliovirus type 3 was rarely isolated after the activated sludge treatment, but was still detected in about one-third of the sludge samples. Reoviruses and coxsackieviruses were detected at similar rates from all samples and appear to be more resistant to the activated sludge treatment than poliovirus type 3. Poliovirus types 1 and 2 were present in almost every sample of raw sewage and settled water and still found in about half of the effluent and sludge samples, indicating a level of resistance similar to that of reoviruses and coxsackieviruses.  相似文献

Sewage sludge was monitored for the presence of salmonellas after it had been dumped on a pasture so that it formed a number of extensive, thick pats. Although salmonellas were isolated from the sewage sludge, and also from grass and soil beneath the sludge for up to 94 days, they were not isolated from the faeces of grazing horses or surrounding drainage ditches. The results are discussed with regard to the possible hazards resulting from the use of sewage sludge on pasture.  相似文献

One hundred and ten Listeria sp. isolates from sewage sludge were identified according to phenotypic and genotypic methods. The Listeria sp. strains isolated from five types of sludge from three sewage treatment plants in Angers (France) and the surrounding area included L. monocytogenes (55.5%), L. innocua (29.1%), L. seeligeri (13.6%) and L. welshimeri (1.8%). The majority of L. monocytogenes strains belonged to serotypes 4b, 1/2b and 1/2a. Moreover, a heteroduplex mobility assay based on the 16S rRNA sequences was tested for its ability to identify the six species of the genus Listeria. This study, performed on 283 Listeria sp. strains from human, food and sewage sludge samples, showed that all the species were distinguishable from one another. L. innocua and L. seeligeri showed respectively three and two distinct banding patterns. Within L. monocytogenes, four groups (I-IV) were defined. The majority of food and environmental isolates were clustered in group I and it is noteworthy that group IV clustered epidemiologic isolates and strains belonging to serotypes 4b, 1/2a and 1/2b.  相似文献

The comparative foraging of Black-headed ( Larus ridibundus ), Herring ( L. argentalus ) and Great black-backed gulls ( L. marinus ) was investigated at refuse tips in north-east England. Between October and February, two races of Herring gulls are present, those which breed in Britain ( L. a. argenteus ) and the larger Scandinavian herring gulls ( L. a. argentatus).
Three types of feeding at a refuse tip were distinguished: undisturbed primary feeding (highly competitive feeding on freshly dumped rubbish), disturbed primary feeding (agile surface dipping for food from the air, close to the working bulldozer) and secondary feeding (low density feeding on dispersed and partially buried rubbish).
In undisturbed feeding the largest individuals (i.e. Great black-backed gulls) were competitively superior and achieved the highest feeding success. The smallest individuals (i.e. Black-headed gulls) were rapidly excluded by the larger gulls. Scandinavian herring gulls were competitively superior in intraspecific interactions, but they were selectively attacked by Great black-backed gulls. Disturbed feeding, in contrast, was used most by Black-headed gulls and not at all by Great black-backed gulls. Large body size is a disadvantage in disturbed feeding, due to increased wing loading acting as a constraint on manoeuvrability. Overall, the separation between species, in terms of the proportion of food gained by different feeding methods, was estimated at 30–50%.
Cold and windy conditions led to increased numbers of Herring and Great black-backed gulls at tips, and numbers of Great black-backed gulls were also higher when fish landings at the coast were low. There were significant differences between tips in the number of Great black-backed and Black-headed gulls, possibly due to differences in working regime which influence the feeding opportunities which were available.  相似文献

The incidence of 'thermophilic' campylobacters in foods and environmental samples has been studied over a two-year period. Of 781 environmental samples, 529 (67%) were found to contain campylobacters, and campylobacters were isolated from 835 (39%) of 2116 food samples. Sewage was almost always contaminated with campylobacters (96.6% of samples) and of the food samples both poultry (55.5%) and offal (47.0%) were commonly contaminated. Determination of the heat-stable serotypes of all strains isolated from these sources and of 921 strains isolated from human faeces showed that there was a wide distribution of serotypes in most types of sample. Serotype Pen 2 was the commonest type found in human faeces (18.9%) and it was also commonest in offal (21.3%), beef (40.0%), sewage (17.7%) and was the third commonest type in poultry. A comparison of culture media and conditions for optimal production of both cytotoxic and cytotonic enterotoxins showed that Brucella Broth incubated under microaerobic conditions for 24 h at 42 degrees C was suitable for both toxins. Detection of cytotoxic activity was most sensitive using HeLa cells. The sensitivities of two ELISA systems and a Chinese Hamster Ovary tissue culture assay for detection of cytotonic enterotoxin were comparable. Not all strains isolated from cases of enteritis in human beings produced toxin; 23.1% produced cytotonic enterotoxin and 17.5% produced cytotoxin. There was no correlation between serotype and toxin production. The wide distribution of campylobacters, indistinguishable from those isolated from cases of enteritis in human beings, leads us to conclude that simplistic statements suggesting that one particular type of food is primarily responsible for cases of human disease should not be made.  相似文献

The structures of microbial communities in lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors for treating municipal wastewater with different ratios of COD soluble/COD total were studied using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA genes.The microbial structure of the inoculum sludge obtained from a full-scale UASB reactor of treating potato processing wastewater was compared with the structures of sludges collected from three lab-scale UASB reactors after eight months feeding with raw municipal wastewater, with CEPS (chemically enhanced primary sedimentation) pretreated municipal wastewater, and with a synthetic municipal sewage, respectively. Computer-aided numerical analysis of the DGGE fingerprints showed that the bacterial community underwent major changes. The sludges for treating raw and CEPS pretreated wastewater had very similar bacterial and archaeal communities (82%and 96% similarity) but were different from that for treating the synthetic sewage. Hence, despite similar % COD in the particulate form in the synthetic and the real wastewater, the two wastewaters were selected for different microbial communities. Prominent DGGE bands of Bacteria and Archaea were purified and sequenced. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the dominant archaeal bands found in the inoculum, and UASB sludge fed with raw sewage, CEPS pretreated wastewater, and synthetic sewage were closely associated with Methanosaeta concilii. In the UASB sludge fed with synthetic sewage, another dominant band associated with an uncultured archaeon 39-2 was found together with M. concilii.  相似文献

构树是我国重要速生经济树种,具有适应性强、生物量大和重金属富集能力强等优点,而污泥中含有大量养分和重金属,在污泥中种植构树有望同时实现污泥生态修复和构树资源生产。本研究通过盆栽试验,分析在对照(赤红壤)、50%污泥(污泥、赤红壤混合基质,重量比各50%)和100%污泥基质中构树生长及不同部位(根、茎、叶)养分和重金属吸收累积特征,并通过主成分分析和隶属度函数对吸收累积能力进行综合评价。结果表明: 构树在50%和100%污泥中均可正常生长且株高、生物量显著高于对照,在100%污泥中长势最好,质量指数(1.02)分别是对照和50%污泥处理的4.3和2.4倍。50%和100%污泥处理构树各部位N含量和茎P含量显著高于对照,100%污泥处理构树茎、叶K含量显著低于对照。构树对Cu、Zn、Pb、Cd、Ni的吸收部位以根为主,根系重金属含量与污泥比例呈正相关,叶Pb、Cd含量符合《饲料卫生标准》(GB 13078—2017)。构树对Cd的吸收累积效果好于其他重金属元素。与对照相比,50%和100%污泥处理构树根部Zn、Pb、Cd滞留率显著提高(57.8%~85.8%),100%污泥处理构树根部Cu、Ni滞留率显著提高(67.5%和74.8%)。污泥处理全株养分和重金属累积量均显著大于对照,其中100%污泥处理显著大于50%污泥处理。与50%污泥处理相比,100%污泥处理构树各部位及全株养分和重金属累积量大幅提高。不同处理下构树污泥适应性和元素吸收累积的综合评价得分为100%污泥(0.848)>50%污泥(0.344)>对照(0.080)。构树对污泥具有良好的适应性,在纯污泥中能够正常生长并具有较强的吸收累积养分和重金属能力,可在修复污泥的同时进行构树资源生产。  相似文献

Oxalate reduces calcium availability of food because it chelates calcium, forming the sparingly soluble salt calcium-oxalate. Nevertheless, fat sand rats (Psammomys obesus; Gerbillinae) feed exclusively on plants containing much oxalate. We measured the effects of calcium intake on oxalate balance by comparing oxalate intake and excretion in wild fat sand rats feeding on their natural, oxalate-rich, calcium-poor diet with commercially-bred fat sand rats feeding on an artificial, calcium-rich, oxalate-poor diet of rodent pellets. We also tested for the presence of the oxalate degrading bacterium Oxalobacter sp. in the faeces of both groups. Fat sand rats feeding on saltbush ingested significantly more oxalate than fat sand rats feeding on pellets (P < 0.001) and excreted significantly more oxalate in urine and faeces (P < 0.01 for both). However the fraction of oxalate recovered in excreta [(oxalate excreted in urine + oxalate excreted in faeces)/oxalate ingested] was significantly higher in pellet-fed fat sand rats (61%) than saltbush-fed fat sand rats (27%). We found O. sp. in the faeces of both groups indicating that fat sand rats harbor oxalate degrading bacteria, and these are able, to some extent, to degrade oxalate in its insoluble form.  相似文献

The adsorption of cadmium, copper(II), lead and zinc ions from aqueous solution by sewage sludge, paper mill waste (PMW) and composted PMW was investigated along with the influence of pre-treatment on composted PMW. Langmuir adsorption isotherms were fitted where appropriate. Sewage sludge was the most effective biosorbent of the waste products for all metal ions examined, adsorbing, for example, up to 39.3 mg/g of Pb at an initial concentration of 77.8 mg/l. PMW was a less effective biosorbent than sewage sludge. However, it was found that composting the PMW resulted in an increase in metal uptake capacity and both sewage sludge and composted PMW have potential for low-cost remediation of high leachate wastewaters. The desorption of metal ions from PMW compost was most effective using 0.1 N H2SO4 and 1 mM nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA).  相似文献

When primary domestic sewage sludge was combined with settled sewage or secondary-treatment plant effluent, synergism resulted. The activity (measured by oxygen uptake, and the removal of Kjeldahl nitrogen and orthophosphate from solution) which resulted from incubating sludge together with settled sewage exceeded the sum of the activities when these components were incubated separately. A similar synergistic effect occurred with sludge and effluent. The sewage sludges were deficient in readily available nitrogen, but no shortage of phosphorus was demonstrated. The addition of ammonium and orthophosphate salts to sludge, in concentrations equivalent to those found in settled sewage and effluent, stimulated sludge oxygen uptake at least 80% as much as settled sewage or effluent. It is suggested that the synergism reflects increased microbial activity resulting from widened carbon-nitrogen and carbon-phosphorus ratios achieved by combining sludge with nutrient-rich settled sewage or effluent.  相似文献

For most of the 20th century, the tidal reaches of the River Tyne in northeast England were used as an open sewer for organic wastes from almost a million people. This produced anaerobic conditions in the river, but supplied an appreciable source of food for five species of gulls. Observations on the number of gulls using the river were made in 1969/70 to establish the situation before a sewage treatment scheme was implemented. By 1994, the volume of untreated sewage discharged into the river had been reduced by 97% and by 86% in the study area, and a second survey was carried out to evaluate the effect of the clean-up on gull numbers. Overall, gull numbers showed a significant decrease of 37% between the two study periods. The decrease in winter was 38% and was also significant, while the decline in summer was 33%, but not significant. Considering individual species, numbers of Common and Great Black-backed Gulls declined by 93% and 91% respectively. In both these cases this is presumed to be due to the decline in available food. Black-headed Gull numbers did not change significantly and it appears they have been able to find alternative feeding sites such as mud flats exposed at low tide and the outfall where treated effluent is discharged. Numbers of Lesser Black-backed Gulls and Kittiwakes rose dramatically as a result of increases in breeding numbers in the area. Neither species feeds along the river. Numbers of Herring Gulls did not change significantly — it is likely that the effect of the decline in food availability was masked by the increase in breeding numbers in towns along the river banks. The different response of each of the species of gulls indicates the differences in their ecology and breeding status in the area.  相似文献

AIM: To study the diversity of commensal Escherichia coli populations shed in faeces of cattle fed on different diets. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty Brahman-cross steers were initially fed a high grain (80%) diet and then randomly allocated into three dietary treatment groups, fed 80% grain, roughage, or roughage + 50% molasses. Up to eight different E. coli isolates were selected from primary isolation plates of faecal samples from each animal. Fifty-two distinct serotypes, including nine different VTEC strains, were identified from a total of 474 E. coli isolates. Cattle fed a roughage + molasses diet had greater serotype diversity (30 serotypes identified) than cattle fed roughage or grain (21 and 17 serotypes identified respectively). Cluster analysis showed that serotypes isolated from cattle fed roughage and roughage + molasses diets were more closely associated than serotypes isolated from cattle fed grain. Resistance to one or more of 11 antimicrobial agents was detected among isolates from 20 different serotypes. Whilst only 2.3% of E. coli isolates produced enterohaemolysin, 25% were found to produce alpha-haemolysin. CONCLUSIONS: Diverse non-VTEC populations of E. coli serotypes are shed in cattle faeces and diet may affect population diversity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study provides new information on the serotype diversity and phenotypic traits of predominant E. coli populations in cattle faeces, which could be sources of environmental contamination.  相似文献

The population dynamics and behaviour of the larid assemblage of a Mediterranean coastal wetland, the Vourkari inlet in Greece, were studied during the winter of 2008–2009. More black-headed gulls (Larus ridibundus) were seen in the inlet in December, more Mediterranean gulls (Larus melanocephalus) were present from mid-January to mid-February, while little variation was observed in yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) numbers throughout winter. Bird numbers remained stable through the day for the yellow-legged gull, but fewer black-headed and Mediterranean gulls were present in the late morning than the other periods. Diurnal activity patterns showed that feeding was the primary behaviour for yellow-legged gulls and resting and sleeping for black-headed and Mediterranean gulls, with locomotion being equally important for all species. All larids were primarily feeding in the late morning period, but yellow-legged gulls were doing so in much higher proportions. These contrasting patterns suggested that the Vourkari inlet was more important as a day roost for black-headed and Mediterranean gulls and a preferred feeding ground for yellow-legged gulls. Furthermore, results suggested that resting and sleeping were interchangeable activities and all other activities had more or less the same time demands on a daily basis, and also a consistent pattern across species in sleeping proportions that might indicate cross-species synchrony in sleep patterns; however future research is needed to resolve these issues. This study provided important new information on the winter ecology of three larids and revealed patterns of wetland use by these species that could help assess the importance of certain areas and improve coastal habitat management strategies to benefit birds.  相似文献

The presence of Salmonella spp. was investigated at three sewage treatment plants in Oslo, Norway. Salmonella bacteria were isolated from floor surfaces and areas with hand contact in the treatment plant, from floor surfaces and areas with hand contact in the treatment plant, from floor surfaces in the changing rooms, and in one case from floor surfaces in an eating room. The sewage sludge contained from 140 to 140,000 Salmonella spp. per 100 g dry weight. Raw and treated sewage contained an average of 130 and 3 of these bacteria per 100 ml, respectively. There was poor correlation between the pattern of serotypes isolated from the sewage works and the patterns of those which were registered among the population of Oslo during the investigation. Neither enteropathogenic bacteria nor parasite eggs were found in fecal samples from employees at the plant. The health significance of the presence of Salmonella spp. in the environment of sewage workers is discussed.  相似文献

During the aerobic digestion process, the nitrogen which had been embedded in the activated sludge is solubilized to form ammoniacal and nitric nitrogen which are in turn transferred to the liquor and cause the increase of nitrogen loading in the sewage treatment plant. In this study, the anoxic-aerobic sludge digestion system which is a modified form of the conventional aerobic sludge digestion is made up of aerobic and anoxic tanks and are designed to remove both the volatile suspended solids and the total nitrogen (TN) simultaneously. The removal efficiencies of both VSS and TN were investigated by feeding waste-activated sludge continuously and semicontinuously. The maximum percent reduction of both VSS and TN was achieved at a Q(r)/Q(s) ratio of 2 in the continuous process. The semicontinuous process was used to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency further. In the semicontinuous process, the VSS reduction efficiency as well as the nitrogen removal efficiency increased remarkably under a constant Q(r)/Q(s) ratio of 2. This process also achieved a VSS reduction efficiency higher than the aerobic digestion process (control). It was suggested that the additional anoxic tank enhanced the sludge digestion. Furthermore, the anoxic-aerobic digestion system can be applied to other treatment media like the primary sludge, industrial sludge, animal manure, etc.  相似文献

We describe our experience with the isolation of salmonellae from sewage sludge from four treatment plants in different geographic areas of Ohio. Over 3 years, we isolated salmonellae 50 times from 311 sludge samples. Most isolations were made after enrichment in Selenite broth (BBL Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md.). The largest proportion of isolations came from the plant serving the population of Columbus, a large metropolitan area. A significantly greater number of isolations from this plant were made during the first quarter of the year. Twenty-one different serotypes were isolated, along with five untypable strains. The most frequently isolated serotype was Salmonella infantis. Five of the strains were multiply resistant to antibiotics. We also describe the prevalence of antibodies to salmonellae in members of the families residing on the farms in the study. It was found that antibodies to group C salmonellae predominated.  相似文献
