Due to the problem of contamination in the Jose Antonio Alzate dam, located in the State of Mexico, Mexico, the partition coefficient, the contamination degree, and the ecological risk index of nine metals were calculated in order to establish the water quality in different areas of the Alzate dam. The sampling sites were selected according to the river flow into the dam, via three sampling programs, the physical–chemical parameters were measured in situ, and the samples were collected to measure metals in the dissolved phase and also as suspended particulate matter. Thomann’s model was used to calculate the partition coefficient. Håkanson’s methodology was used to determine the degree of contamination and the ecological risk index. Finally, the water quality criteria for the dissolved metals were calculated. The results for suspended particulate matter suggest a moderate risk of metal contamination in the dam. Copper and lead in dissolved form exceeded the values of water quality criteria.  相似文献

Material transported by the Öre River in northern Sweden is all deposited within the estuary which means that resuspension is necessary for the transport of particles out of the estuary. Wave-induced sediment resuspension in the estuary was studied by monitoring the distribution of suspended particles during a resuspension-redeposition cycle. The particle concentration in the water mass was measured with a light scattering probe, calibrated by comparison with the amount of particles collected on a filter.After a long period with calm weather and a low river input less than 100 tonne of suspended particulate matter was present in the estuary. However, during a period with stormy conditions significant resuspension of sediment particles occurred within the estuary. Two days after the storm approximately 1125 tonne of suspended particulate matter was found in the estuary. Most (61%) of the suspended matter was found in the deepest third of the water column, although up to 17% was present in the top third of the water column. The total load of particulate matter in the water column remained constant until day four after the storm, but a significant redistribution of the particulate matter occurred both in the vertical and horizontal directions. Nine days after the storm, a significant amount of particles (c. 350 tonnes) was still in suspension.  相似文献

The cyclic annual flood reaching Aswan High Dam Reservoir, results in a gradual increase in water level. However, the impacts of this incoming water mass are not merely the increase in water level, but also change the physical and chemical characteristics of the reservoir. The flood water coming from the south is rich in suspended matter, which gradually sediment to the bottom. The highest values of total dissolved solids and electrical conductance can be measured just in front of the edge of the flood.  相似文献

Certain chemical constituents (NO3-N, bio-available P, Ca, Na, K, Mn, Cu, Co and organic matter) together with pH, Eh and clay content of surface sediments at various depths of the overlying water in Lake Bhim Tal were examined during 1977—1978. In addition, NH3-N and dissolved oxygen at the mud-water interface (water immediately above the sediments) were measured. The values of Eh, pH and NO3-N in the sediments showed a negative relationship with water depth and positive relationship with dissolved oxygen at the interface. The other variables of the sediment were positively related to water depth and negatively related to dissolved oxygen at the interface. Organic matter, K, Na and Ca showed positive relationship with the amount of clay while the cations (K, Na, Ca) and trace metals (Cu, Mn, Co) showed a positive relationship with the amount of organic matter in the sediments.  相似文献

A study of the granulometric, mineralogical and chemical composition of surface sediments and suspended particulate matter in the coastal area between Varazze and Cape Noli (Ligurian Sea), provided useful information on transport and sedimentation processes in the area. Sediments samples from the shelf were highly heterogeneous, ranging from pelites to sands. Minerals typical of individual river basins were found close to river mouths, indicating a limited sediment transport along the coast. Chemical and textural characteristics of the suspended particulate matter indicated that the longshore sediment transport is influenced by the presence of a submarine canyon; material coming from the east, following the Ligurian current, is partially diverted offshore along the canyon axis. The coastline pattern, some harbor artifacts, and the peculiar morphology of the shelf are all factors controlling the direction of sediment transport.  相似文献

Two pairs of springs were surveyed in the floodplain of the Upper Rhône River. Each pair included a karstic (upstream) and an alluvial (downstream) spring in the same catchment. Various physical, chemical, and biological factors were measured in the water and the sediment. The study showed karstic and alluvial spring typology. In each pair, the karstic springs were characterized by higher alkalinity, whereas alluvial springs were fed both by karstic groundwater and Rhône River water with higher sulphate content. Organic matter dynamics and retention processes were different in each spring. The distribution and abundance of fine sediment played a prominent role in the storage of particulate organic carbon and the development of microbial biomass and activity. The hydrological cycle governed organic and inorganic nutrient fluxes, and was, with temperature, the main factor influencing microbial and macroinvertebrate dynamics. The high amount of organic matter in one alluvial spring was correlated with high microbial biomass and activity.  相似文献

This study investigates the distribution of heavy metals in the suspended particulate matter and the sediments of Kavala Gulf, located in Northern Greece. Particulate trace metals were determined in accordance to water column physicochemical parameters. Metals in sediments were related to the textural characteristics, the organic matter, and carbonate contents of surficial sediments. Results illustrated that the diverse human coastal activities influence the distribution of particulate and sediment metal concentrations, since lower trace metal levels were detected along the western (tourism) and eastern (aquaculture) coast, while increased values were observed at the central (urban and industrial). Overall, particulate metals show moderately low levels compared to other similar sites, with the exception of Ni and Cd depicting local peaks along the industrial coastal zone. Significantly increased levels for particulate lead (123.1 μg/g) and chromium (113.9 μg/g) were detected at the sites near the industrial zone. Direct effluents from a fertilizer plant appeared responsible for the increased Pb, Cr, and Cd levels, while the increased values in Zn, Cu, and Hg appear related to phosphogypsum leaching. Sediment contamination assessment indicated that the Kavala Gulf is characterized by clean to marginally polluted sediments, with moderately severe pollution levels along the urban coastline.  相似文献

Primary production and decomposition of organic substances were investigated in a tropical lagoon during the rainy season. Production and mineralization were measured using the oxygen method. Total bacteria numbers and biomasses were estimated with epifluorescence microscopy, and the enzymatic degradation capacity of model substrates was determined photometrically. These parameters were measured in the water and sediment of the lagoon itself and also in its effluents and incoming waters. The aim of the study was to determine the sites of highest microbial activity in the lagoon and to compare its activity with other coastal water bodies. Since the shallow water lagoon contains a large amount of particulate matter, it was of special interest to study the degradation of this material and its influence on the microbial population. It was found that up to 14 % of the bacteria colonized the particles and that 62 % of the respiration originated in the particle fraction >8 μm. Highest exoenzymatic activities were measured in the sediment and water of the mangrove belt. It is concluded that decomposition and conditioning of particulate organic matter play dominant roles in the recycling of organic carbon in the lagoon.  相似文献

Total suspended solids (TSS), particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate nitrogen (PN) were measured over a two year period, 1983–1985, in the Orinoco River at Ciudad Bolívar, 450 km from its mouth. Additionally, samples of the main stem at other localities and main tributaries were included in the present study.The suspended sediment concentrations showed a peculiar pattern of temporal variations: two maxima (May–June and November) and two minima (March–April and August–September).The POC and PN concentrations fluctuated with the water discharge, and higher values were observed during the rising limb than during the falling limb of the hydrograph. As dry weight percent of solids, the values ranged between 0.84 and 9.06% for organic carbon and between 0.08 and 1.45% for total nitrogen. The carbon-nitrogen ratio in the sediment averaged 9.1. The major contribution of organic carbon and nitrogen in particulate form to the Orinoco main stem comes from the left margin tributaries, which have their headwater in the mountainous regions of the Andes.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of particle size and composition on seasonal changes in the sedimentation rate, suspended and sedimenting particles were collected from Trout Lake, Wisconsin, USA during the 2002 ice-free season. Particles were characterized with regard to particulate biogenic silicon (PBSi) concentration and distribution between four size classes. The concentration of particulate chlorophyll and chlorophyll degradation products was also measured in water column particles and sediment trap material collected during the first half of the sampling period. The highest rates of mass sedimentation during the stratified period were measured in spring and early summer. Seasonal increases in sedimentation are related to the presence of large colonial diatoms in the water column as indicated by elevated PBSi concentrations. The majority of particulate matter in the water column was found in the smallest (<20 m) size fraction while most of the mass of sediment trap material was in larger size fractions (>20 m). Smaller cells appear to carry out most of the photosynthesis in Trout Lake but larger cells are responsible for seasonal trends in sedimentation. These results may explain how pelagic photosynthesis and sedimentation rates can be quantitatively decoupled across a range of trophic conditions but appear correlated when based on mid-summer measurements.  相似文献

We investigated the concentrations of particulate Al, Si, P, S, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, and Fe at various areas of Lake Biwa, such as the limnetic zone in the northern basin, the offshore zone, the dredged area and Akanoi Bay in the southern basin, and reed community areas in the shore. In the wide and deep northern basin, the density of suspended solids was low, and substantial fractions of particulate Si, P, S, and Ca were biogenic matter produced by phytoplankton. In the offshore zone in the narrow and shallow southern basin, the concentration ratios of particulate Si, K, Ca, Ti, and Fe against particulate Al were almost constant throughout the year and were similar to those found in crusts. Therefore, these elements are most likely derived from terrigenous clay matter. In the dredged area where the hypolimnion became anoxic during the stratification period, the concentrations of particulate Fe, Mn, P, S, and Ca increased because of the formation of hydrous Fe and Mn oxides and Fe sulfide. In Akanoi Bay, the ratios of Mn/Al and Fe/Al were high because of the stirring of sediments enriched with Mn and Fe oxides. In the reed community areas, the concentration of suspended solids correlated well with particulate Fe and P, but not with Al or chlorophyll a; therefore these areas seem to be rich in humic organic matter enriched with P and Fe due to microbial activity. Thus, the elemental composition of suspended solids reflects the chemical, biological, and physical processes in the lake and gives us useful indices of the characteristics of the water. Summary The Ems estuary is a tidal system, showing typical estuaries characteristics, such as gradients of salinity and suspended matter in the water phase. The tidal amplitude is 2.5–3 m. Tidal flats cover 40% of the total area in the outer part and 75% in the innermost part of the estuary, the Dollard. In the sediment aerobic heterotrophic bacteria are concentrated in the upper 2 cm, the numbers rapidly decreasing with depth.Oxygen production and consumption rates in the sediment, and oxygen consumption in the water are measured, together with environmental parameters and numbers of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria. Using a conversion factor of 12/32, oxygen measurements are translated to organic carbon. Input of organic carbon from external sources (particulate carbon from the river Ems and the North Sea, and organic waste discharge) is calculated for the Dollard. An organic carbon budget for the Dollard, using these calculated figures from one year's measurements, showed that most of the organic carbon entering the systems, originated from external sources.Mineralization was quantitatively more important in the sediment than it was in the water phase. The calculated import and production of organic carbon in the system was larger than the calculated consumption. An explanation for this difference is probably the export of soluble organic carbon, which was not measured, to the adjoining Waddensea, which must be considerable. It was concluded that heterotrophic bacteria must play an important role in carbon fluxes in the Dollard and that studies of growth yield under in situ conditions are necessary for a better understanding of their role in the ecosystem.  相似文献

This paper is the second part of a base line study carried out in the coastal region near a marine service station located in Morrocoy National Park, Venezuela. Results from a physical and chemical characterization of the water and sediments of four sites located around the service station are presented. The physical and chemical factors measured in water included: temperature, salinity, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, saturation percentage of dissolved oxygen, pH, total suspended solids, transparency, oil and grease, total residual petroleum hydrocarbon, vanadium and lead, total coliform bacteria, and the presence of coliform bacteria. The factors measured in sediments include: granulometry, organic material, total carbonates, vanadium, lead, oil and grease, and total hydrocarbons. In addition, the amount of vanadium and lead in sample tissue from three species which are abundant and widely distributed in each site was measured in order to evaluate the potential of these species as bio-indicators. The water in the area where this study was conducted is shallow, warm, and thermally homogeneous, with high salinity and normal pH and dissolved oxygen, and supersaturated with oxygen in certain hours in sites adjacent to abundant underwater vegetation. The water is moderately turbid with a tendency towards less dissolved oxygen with increased depth. The estimated values of NMP/100 ml of the coliform fecal organisms is within legal limits even though the total number of water coliforms measured in Site 2 was ten times higher than in Site 1. This increase is associated with the proximity of Site 2 to an outflow of pre-treated sewage. The values of TRPH in the water collected from each site were low and very close to the detection limit (0.8/ml). Vanadium was not found, while lead was detected in 11 of the 12 samples. Compared to the values measured for Site 1, which was the local reference, only one sample had a concentration of three times the maximum baseline. The amount of lead found in all analyzed samples was acceptable, according to the standards set by the State of Washington (maximum value: 292 mg/kg), while the concentration of lead in the sediments around the supply dock were 1.5 to 3.4 times greater than the Dutch norm. It can be concluded that there is no evidence of an accumulation of Va or Pb in the species selected as bioindicators. An observation program is proposed in which variables similar to those measured for this characterization will be studied with some modifications. A more intense sampling of some variables is recommended (lead in water and sediments, total coliform and fecal matter in consecutive samples and in days following a high concentration of visitors) as is the elimination or minimization of other variables.  相似文献

Many aquatic organisms rely on the suspension of particulate matter for food or for building materials, yet these conditions are difficult to replicate in laboratory mesocosms. Consequently, husbandry and experimental conditions may often be sub-optimal. The Vortex Resuspension Tank (VoRT) is a simple and reliable system for the resuspension of food or sediments using an enclosed airlift. The particle rain from the lift is mixed in the tank by two water inputs that provide directional current flow across the study organism(s). The vortex mixing creates a turbulent lateral water flow that allows the distribution of particulate matter outwards from the sediment outflow. By calibrating a VoRT it is possible to control sedimentation rate by manipulating water and air flow rates. As an example application, three VoRTs were maintained under different sediment loadings to assess the sediment fraction utilisation and tube growth rates of the tube-building polychaete worm Sabellaria spinulosa. S. spinulosa consistently utilised a lower mean particle size than that of the background sediment when provided with well sorted medium sands. Under sediment starved conditions, there was net erosion of colonies whereas under intermediate and high sediment rates there was consistent cumulative growth throughout a 15 d experiment. This highlights the importance of suspended sediment for S. spinulosa and also the suitability of the VoRT system for maintaining organisms with suspended matter requirements.  相似文献

The association of many environmentally sensitive chemicals and their transformation products with mineral and organic substrates is of considerable importance for environmental monitoring, prediction and management purposes in rivers and their basins. Our understanding of these relationships is poor. This paper reviews processes of particular concern, including the physical behaviour of fine-grained (< 63 µm) sediment in freshwater; the role of flocculation as a transport vector; the processes that control freshwater flocculation including microbiological factors; the uncertainty in conventional sediment transport models for predicting pathways of sediment-associated chemistry; the relationship between suspended sediment and toxicity in the water column; and the partitioning of chemicals between the sediment, organic and water phase, including the significance of these in predicting chemical transport on suspended matter.  相似文献

During the mixing period sediment traps were placed at 9 different levels of the water column in La Concepción reservoir (Málaga-Spain). During the exposure time a benthic nepheloid layer with high suspended matter was detected. Seston vertical flux profile shows an exponential increase with depth, suggesting that a large fraction of the collected particulate matter comes from bottom resuspension, due to an intermittent complete mixing process. It was estimated that resuspension 1 m above the bottom increased the fluxes of seston, particulate organic carbon, particulate nitrogen and particulate phosphorus by factors of 4.1, 1.5, 2.1 and 4.8 respectively.The, fitting to an exponential function allowed us to obtain a resuspension coefficient and the scale vertical length for this event, 36 m, which is higher than those estimated for other aquatic environments. From the above results the calculated vertical eddy diffusivity, suggesting a high turbulence in the water reservoir during the turnover period. Resuspension is considered important in order to estimate net downward fluxes and to understand different processes such as redistribution of sediment and fertilization of the water column.  相似文献

In the Elbe hardly anything is known about the actual fate of phytoplankton and the resultant pigment composition of suspended matter. As part of a longterm study on the role of suspended matter in the cycles of nitrogen and associated oxygen consumption processes in the Elbe estuary in northern Germany (‘Sonderforschungsbereich 327 Elbe’ project) and the characterization of estuarine and coastal water bodies with regard to the transport of pollutants such as heavy metals, we have started to characterize suspended matter with regard to the pigments present therein. This will allow us to study phytoplankton turnover and to determine the role of phytoplankton decay mechanisms in the mobilization, binding, and transport of pollutants associated with particulate matter. Our first data on the pigment composition of suspended matter from the Elbe and particularly over the region of Hamburg harbour, obtained using a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method, is presented. The pigment concentrations varied considerably over the summer months. Values up to 250 mg l−1 of chlorophyll a were observed upstream of Hamburg. We found that on its course through Hamburg the concentrations (μg g−1 of particulate matter) of all pigments in the Elbe drop to under half those found upstream of Hamburg. The pigment concentrations in the turbidity maximum were significantly lower than in the rest of the estuary due to the decline of algae as a result of inadequate light conditions and the salinity gradient. The highest particulate matter concentrations were found in the turbidity maximum and just downstream of Hamburg. The highest particulate organic carbon values were found just downstream of Hamburg. The presence of of fucoxanthin and the chlorophyllsc andb, and the changes in pigment patterns were indicative for the dominant algal classes and the phytoplankton succession in the suspended matter. The ratio of chlorophylla to lutein was found to be a possible indicator of phytoplankton breakdown.  相似文献

Twelve water quality variables were measured at different intervals (biweekly and twice a week) in two ponds during two consecutive production cycles in a semi-intensive shrimp farm on the Northwest coast of Mexico. The average harvest during dry season (March–July, a 95 days period) was 1822 kg ha-1, with an average size of 16.0 g; while the harvest in the rainy season (August–January, a 165-day period) was 2125 kg ha-1, with an average size of 11.9 g. In the rainy season, dissolved oxygen concentration tended to decrease as the feeding rates and shrimp and phytoplankton biomass were increasing until harvest. During both culture cycles, mean values of temperature, salinity and ammonium in ponds were not significantly different from those in inlet water, whereas pH levels in ponds were higher than in incoming water.Nitrogen nutrients, pH and particulate organic matter levels in ponds and inlet water did not exhibit seasonal differences; the better yield and feed conversion obtained during rainy season reflect the fact that temperature and mean chlorophyll a were higher during the rainy than in the dry season; salinity and total suspended solids were lower during the dry than in the rainy season. The mean levels of the water quality variables in the two ponds were not significantly different in both grow out cycles. Therefore, the differences in productivity between ponds cannot be explained by the water quality.  相似文献

Up to now the water-sediment interface (WSI) has not been considered by limnologists and oceanographers as a theoretical frontier between two phases, but as a variable layer comprising the overlying bottom water, the superficial sediment, and the bioturbed sediment. This heterogeneous benthic boundary layer forms a non-equilibrated assemblage of an aqueous phase, a mineral phase influencing the exchanges, and a dissolved gaseous phase regulating biological activity, detrital organic matter present as dissolved or adsorbed compounds and particles, and a living benthic community dominated by microorganisms. Biological activity and the equilibrium between these components are linked to depth, bottom currents, primary production and allochtonous inputs of organic matter. The settling rate of particulate matter in the water column, which depends on both the size and density of particles, is also an important factor. Settled organic matter is broken down mainly by heterotrophic microorganisms. In the first stage, dissolved or particulate matter is depolymerized by exoenzymes linked to the bacterial membrane. Other heterotrophic organisms, like flagellates and ciliates, contribute to the activity of bacterial populations or to a modification of the physical and chemical characteristics of organic matter like macrofauna. Bacterial activity in the WSI is one to two orders of magnitude higher than in overlying bottom water, depending on the density of the bacterial population, on the amount of available organic matter, and on the presence of predators grazing on bacteria and macrofauna and increasing oxygen and dissolved substrates. The WSI is now considered as a sink for particulate matter and biopolymers, and/or as a sink or source for organic monomers and NH4 + depending on their concentrations. As a result of its contribution to mineral and organic cycles, the WSI is a crossroad for exchanges between aqueous and sediment layer. During the last decade, intensive work has been performed in this field, but progress has been slow due to the heterogeneity of the layer and the adsorptive properties of the mineral fraction.  相似文献

In this study, eighteen sites at Jeddah coastal area, Red Sea, have been assessed for water quality status, depending on nutrients, metals, Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and physical variables during 2018 and 2019. The investigated parameters of the Water Quality Index (WQI) are temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), DO saturation, oxidizable organic matter (OOM), suspended particulate matter (SPM), Chl-a, ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, total nitrogen, reactive phosphate, total phosphorus, silicate, Zn, Fe, Mn Cu, Cd, Pb, and Ni. The results revealed that the pH values were slightly alkaline with a range of 7.85–8.20. The results of other parameters were as follow: salinity (36.95–42.61PSU), DO (5.22–6.67 mg/L), OOM (0.40–1.23 mg/L), SPM (12.39–21.5 mg/L), Chl-a (0.10–0.83 µg/L). The range of nutrients (μM) were 0.07–0.22, 0.45–1.47, 9.62–18.64, 23.31–57.65, 0.05–0.15, 0.55–2.78 and 2.54–5.51 for NH4/N, NO2/N, NO3/N, TN, PO4/P, TP and SiO4/Si, respectively. Cluster analysis was used to classify the stations studied. From the current study, five clusters were found, indicating the need to perform cluster analysis in the water quality assessment process to confirm the durability and consistency of the data discovered in the current application.  相似文献
