Taxonomic and ecological studies of freshwater harpacticoid copepods are limited globally by the ability to easily and accurately identify specimens. Here, we test the use of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene locus as a tool for assessing the diversity of freshwater Harpacticoida. We obtained sequences from New Zealand harpacticoid copepods, representing two families, five genera and nine species, including the non-indigenous Elaphoidella sewelli. All species were delineated by the COI gene. However, high intraspecific diversity was evident among populations of Elaphoidella bidens (>12%), and between North and South Island populations of Bryocamptus pygmaeus (>18%), potentially indicating the presence of morphologically cryptic taxa. We suggest that mitochondrial DNA (COI) sequences can provide a useful tool for the routine identification of freshwater harpacticoid copepods. Applications of these data will include assessing species diversity and biogeography as well as assisting with the detection of non-indigenous species.  相似文献

Heteropsyllus nunni Coull, a meiobenthic harpacticoid copepod is the marine crustacean to undergo a state of diapause within a cyst. A 12 month field study indicated H. nunni adults reached peak population densities in winter, with nauplii maturing in the spring, becoming adults by April or May.At the last stage of development, a mature but unmated adult, they begin to prepare for encystment diapause. The copepods remain within their cyst in a state of diapause for 3–4 months during the summer only. Studies on the effects of temperature and photoperiod suggested that these two environmental cues are not crucial for induction or termination of diapause. Low temperature delayed development and time to encystment, while high temperatures accelerated development, making the time to encystment shorter. There were males than females in the cysts in laboratory experiments. Upon excystment, the copepods mate, and females begin egg production within one week. Adults that have excysted and mated die after a few weeks of active reproductive effort. Nauplii go on to mature and begin the univoltine diapause/reproductive cycle.The copepods prepare for dormancy in two ways: they begin to produce and store two types of secretory products to be used in cyst construction; then they produce large quantities of lipid to be used as a nutrient supply throughout diapause. Histochemistry of the cyst-building material indicated the lower urosome is full of two chemically different products. Dorsally, there is a storage sac of proteinaceous material. The ventral sac of secretory product is a mucopolysaccharide. The copepod builds the spherical cysts in a matrix of small and large sand grains. The cysts fit tightly around the ventral portion of the animal in the its flexed position: however, there is a large space between the cyst and the sides of the copepod.Biochemical analysis of the cyst showed it is composed of an amino acid complex similar to collagenous material. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a complex of large cuticular pores located in the lower urosome and caudal rami. There are specific pores for secretion of the two cyst-building products.  相似文献

Benthic harpacticoids were collected for the first time at Lake Tahoe, California-Nevada, United States. Two species were identified as members of the genus Attheyella Brady, 1880. The genus Attheyella comprises about 150 species within six subgenera, but only twelve species have previously been reported from North American freshwater habitats. The two new species of Attheyella described here have a 3-segmented endopod on P1 and 2-segmented P2–P4 endopods, the distal segment of exopod of P2–P4 has three outer spines, and the P5 has five setae on the exopod and six setae on the baseoendopod. Attheyella (Attheyella) tahoensis sp. n. most closely resembles Attheyella (Attheyella) idahoensis (Marsh, 1903) from Idaho, Montana, and Alaska (United States) and Attheyella (Attheyella) namkungi Kim, Soh & Lee, 2005 from Gosu Cave in South Korea. They differ mainly by the number of setae on the distal endopodal segment of P2–P4. In addition, intraspecific variation has been observed on the caudal rami. Attheyella (Neomrazekiella) tessiae sp. n. is characterized by the extension of P5 baseoendopod, 2-segmented endopod of female P2–P3, and naked third seta of male P5 exopod. The two new species are likely endemic to Lake Tahoe, an isolated alpine lake within the Great Basin watershed in the western United States.  相似文献

The rapid increase in carbon dioxide levels in seawater is causing ocean acidification and is expected to have significant effects on marine life. To explore the ability of the harpacticoid copepod Tigriopus japonicus to adapt to an increased concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) in seawater, we compared the survival rates of adult and nauplius stages at 400, 1000, and 1550?ppm pCO2 over a 14-day period. The survival rate of T. japonicus dramatically decreased over time with increase in pCO2 concentration. At 1550?ppm, the survival rate showed a decrease of more than 20% at the end of the experimental period over that at 400?ppm. Furthermore, the survival rate decreased by a greater amount at all concentrations in nauplii than in adults, with a greater effect in wild-collected specimens than in culture-derived individuals. The results suggest that future ocean acidification may negatively influence the sustainability of T. japonicus and thus may eventually influence benthic ecosystems.  相似文献

Plankton and littoral samples were obtained from several ponds and lagoons of different environments in the Mexican state of Tabasco. These systems are located in the Grijalva-Villahermosa or the Usumacinta basins. Twenty-two copepod species were recorded, most of them cyclopoids with neotropical and Caribbean affinities. Physical and chemical data associated with the species, as well as morphometric parameters of the surveyed systems were measured and analyzed. A correlation was found between diversity and parameters related to the productivity and the shoreline development (D L) of the systems; therefore the littoral heterogeneity could be used to predict the species number in shallow tropical systems. At a regional level, the Tabasco copepod fauna is similar to that known from the Yucatan Peninsula, but different from the faunal associations of central Mexico. Distributional patterns differed slightly between both basins and appear to be correlated with climatic variations. This first survey of the freshwater copepod fauna in the state of Tabasco shows it to be constituted mainly by neotropical forms.  相似文献

Lake Abraxas (68° 29 S., 78° 17 E.) has been cut off from the sea for c. 6000 yr. In December, 1985, it had an ice cover 1.38 m thick, a thermocline at 5.2 m, and zero oxygen at 17.7 m and below. The salinity of the oxylimnion was in the range 14–19 g 1–1. The calanoid, Paralabidocera antarctica (I. C. Thompson), had a maximum density just above a thermocline at 5.0 m, at which depth adult males outnumbered females almost 3 : 1. Immediately beneath the ice adult females outnumbered males 4 : 1. Immature copepodite stages were more abundant relative to adults near the oxycline than at higher levels. The planktonic harpacticoid, Amphiascoides sp., had a maximum density close to the oxycline at 17.2 m.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The life history of the benthic harpacticoid paracamptus schmeili (Crustacea: Copepoda) in the oligotrophic lake Pääjärvi, South Finland, was described from quantitative field data of all developmental stages. The generation time of P. schmeili was exceptionally long for a meiobenthic animal and varied with depth from 1 year in the littoral (depths of 1 and 2m) to 2 years in the upper profundal (13 and 14 m). and to 3 years in the lower profundal (40 m).
2. In the littoral, egg-bearing females were found from April to October, with peaks in spring and late summer, while in the profundal a single summer egg peak was present.
3. In the littoral and in the lower profundal there were three, in the upper profundal) probably four, simultaneous parallel cohorts over-wintering as adults, medium-sized (at 13 m also large) copepodids and medium-sized nauplii. Reproductive isolation of the parallel cohorts was possible at all depths.
4. The between-depth variation in the life history of P. schmeili was probably mainly a phenotypic response to the changing level and seasonal course of temperature and food supply. Growth and reproduction were confined to summer months, and the lengthening generation times with depth accompanied decreasing summer temperatures.
5. The cessation of growth in winter was probably due to a shortage of food, which may also have accentuated the size differences of the overwintering groups through intraspecific competition.  相似文献

By successively filtering off animals emerging from mud cores taken to the laboratory, the degree of torpidity within the same species was found to vary considerably both time and space. Variation in time from the start of dormancy follows a pattern of diapause development similar to that of insect diapause. In some localities dormancy is deep and prolonged, while in others it is less pronounced and lasts for a shorter period. The depth of torpidity during winter seems to be correlated to an induction early in the year. The intensity of diapause varies along the slope of the localities and down into the bottom mud. In some cases high temperatures seem to induce a deeper torpidity.  相似文献

Two species of parasitic copepods (Siphonostomatoida: Caligidae), Caligus sclerotinosus Roubal, Armitage & Rohde, 1983, parasitic on red seabream Pagrus major (Temminck & Schlegel), and Lepeophtheirus longiventralis Yü & Wu, 1932, parasitic on spotted halibut Verasper variegatus (Temminck & Schlegel), are redescribed based on material found on their respective hosts cultured in Japan. Both species are new to Japan. Preliminary observation on the occurrence of L. longiventralis indicates that the larval development takes place on the body surface of the host and only the post-mated female migrates into the host's gill-cavities. Whilst the occurrence of L. longiventralis in Japan can be considered as due to natural causes, the occurrence of C. sclerotinosus is likely due to anthropogenic activities.  相似文献

Two species of freshwater cyclopoid copepods, Cyclops scutifer Sars and Mesocyclops leuckarti (Claus), with different ecological requirements, coexist in three humic ponds near the timberline in boreal forests in south-central Norway. The life cycle in both species is basically regulated by complete depletion of oxygen during the long winter. There is a short period of reproduction in spring followed by a rapid development during summer and autumn to advanced instars, capable of diapause when oxygen depletion starts in early winter. Both species have an exclusive 1-yr cycle.The long winter under anoxic conditions is passed in diapause as large copepodids (late developmental instars) with usually no individuals left in the plankton.Even if co-occurring in the same habitats with similar life cycles, there is a temporal and spatial segregation.  相似文献

A temporal study of harpacticoid copepod populations associated with the seagrass Halophila ovalis was undertaken in the Ashtamudi Estuary, south-west coast of India. A total of 19 species representing 8 families was recorded in this assemblage. Harpacticoids formed 7.52% of the total phytal meiofauna. At the species level, harpacticoids exhibit parallel assemblages with phytal zones, found in other localities.  相似文献

Ectinosomatid material was examined from extensive collections around the British Isles and from several additional world localities and museum collections, permitting a revision of the genus Halectinosoma. This paper describes 12 morphologically similar species and erects five new species. H. sarsi (Boeck) is regarded as species incertae sedis, while H. sarsi sensu Sars (1904) is redescribed as H. pseudosarsi sp. nov.; H. sarsi sensu T. & A. Scott (1894) is synonymized with H. canaliculatum (Por). H. propinquum is regarded as a junior subjective synonym of H. chrystalli (T. Scott). H. clavatum (Sars) is resurrected, having previously been regarded as a synonym of H. brunneum (Brady). Parameters of equations relating wet and dry body weight to length have been calculated for four species of caprellids from the Japan Sea (Possjet Bay), specifically Caprella cristibrachium, C. kroyeri, C. penantis, and C. bispinosa. A common equation was obtained for oxygen consumption rate in relation to body weight. It was shown that within the Order Amphipoda the metabolic rate of caprellids is 1.5 times lower than that of gammarids. The differences in the fecundity of gravid females of four species and females of one species in the spring and summer, respectively, are shown. At the same time the relationship between number of eggs per female and wet body weight of female is approximated by one equation. The equation obtained shows that caprellids represent an ecologically homogeneous group.  相似文献

The life history traits of a tropical copepod population of Mesocyclops longisetus were measured in the laboratory under defined and controlled culture conditions. Egg duration times at 25 and 30 °C were 42.1 and 29.6 hours, respectively. Development times from nauplius I to adult females and males were 22.3 and 18.3 days, respectively. Body sizes (cephalothorax length) of adult females and males were 1.00 and 0.60 mm, respectively. Clutch size averaged 70.2 eggs. Comparison of these traits with those of its congeners reveals considerable life history variation in the genus Mesocyclops. Lipid analyses of early stage eggs showed that the percent composition of triglycerides to total lipid in M. longisetus (22%) is similar to that of Mesocyclops edax (17%) and daphniid cladocerans, but only half that of a marine calanoid copepod. We suggest that zooplankton may adapt to different resource environments by either adjusting their egg size or altering the proportion of lipid that is readily available for metabolic energy of embryos and nauplii. The diverse arrays of zooplankton life histories may be explained in part by adaptations in lipid metabolism in response to the level and predictability of resources.  相似文献

The copepodite antennule development of several harpacticoid families is studied and male antennule development of 5 species is schematically illustrated. The origin of newly formed segments can be determined by seta numbers of segments, relative segment length, furrows indicating previous articulations and by the position of the segment which bears the proximal aesthetasc. At least in some species sexual dimorphism of antennules is present from C II onwards. Females practically reach the adult antennular state at C V whereas males undergo drastic changes from C V to C VI with proximal addition of segments, and often with distal fusions and formation of a unique armature due to functional adaptations in clasping behaviour. No correlation has been found between clasping mode, male antennule type and taxonomic level. In closely related species of the same genus both chirocer and subchirocer antennules are found. The postnaupliar development of the chirocer type can proceed along different ways. Consequently it is suggested that at least chirocer antennules have originated several times independently during harpacticoid evolution.  相似文献
