Scales from Lough Neagh pollan display a large number of checks, making age determination difficult. Sclerite counts showed that an annual check is formed on scales in May and a second accessory check in most young fish in October. The method of ageing from scales was supported by inspection of length-frequency plots and by following the growth of pollan in their first 2 years of life. The body-scale relationship was curvilinear. Back-calculation showed that pollan of both sexes attain a fork length of 29 cm in 5 years (1 ∞=28.9 cm; k = 0.65; l 0= -0.06 year). There is no evidence that annual growth rates have changed since 1965. Possible environmental causes of scale check formation are discussed.  相似文献

The depth limits for visual feeding by pollan larvae and fry, Coregonus pollan , were determined in Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland, by combining laboratory estimates of the minimum light threshold for feeding activity with field measurements of spectral, diurnal and seasonal changes in light penetration. Although feeding thresholds were lowest in the blue light (400–490 nm), the rapid attenuation of this region in the lake meant that the depth limits of feeding in situ were determined by response to the green region (490–595 nm). Effects of changes in irradiance and light penetration on the depth of feeding are considered during a seasonal study. Increased sensitivity, as the juvenile stages develop, may be offset by reduced light penetration due to algal growth. Over an annual period the maximum feeding depth for pollan varied between 2.6 and 4.1 m. In the juvenile stages of two other predatory species from the lake, perch, Perca fluviatilis , and pike, Esox lucius , the corresponding ranges were 1.1–1.9 m and 2.7–4.6 m respectively.  相似文献

The systematic status of the tapeworm Proteocephalus pollanicola Gresson, 1952, a parasite of pollan Coregonus autumnalis pollan Thompson, was evaluated on the basis of freshly collected material from the type-locality (Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland). Comparison of morphological, biometrical and DNA data (RAPD method) from P. pollanicola and from P. exiguus La Rue, 1911, a very common parasite of coregonid fish, did not find any substantial differences between them to confirm the validity of P. pollanicola. Accordingly, P. pollanicola is considered to be a synonym of P. exiguus, a widely distributed parasite in the Holarctic.  相似文献

The length–weight relationship for Lough Neagh pollan was log W= 3·2 log L –2·24. Covariance analysis indicated that there were no differences between the sexes, with maturity, or between years. While a seasonal cycle in relative condition was in phase with gonad development during late summer and autumn, changes in somatic condition presented a more complex pattern. Somatic condition increased in spring, as did the quantity and diversity of food consumed. Despite good conditions for feeding and growth, there was an autumn fall in somatic condition, caused by the diversion of energy to gonad growth.  相似文献

Four aspects of the life histories of the two populations of powan Coregonus lavaretus (L.) in Scotland are described: growth (Eck powan are shorter and with greater year to year variance than Lomond); sexual maturation (Eck powan mature younger, but at similar weight to Lomond); spawning (timing in Eck varies, but is consistent in Lomond); and recruitment/mortality (fecundity, sex ratios, and mortality also vary in the short term). Short term differences between the physiological ecology of the populations can be ascribed to the size and topography of the lochs. Long term differences are more difficult to account for, and are more important in that they may signal changes in sustainability. Conservation of powan must be considered in terms of their synecological relationships, not in isolation.  相似文献

If a pelagic ecosystem is invaded by an efficient planktivorous fish, competition theory predicts that habitat and/or diet segregation should occur if the invader and native planktivores are to co-exist. We compared the diet and pelagic habitat use between invading vendace (Coregonus albula) and two native morphs of whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) in three subarctic lakes located within the same watercourse. No clear vertical habitat segregation was found as vendace prevailed throughout the entire depth range. Zooplankton generally dominated the diet of all three coregonids. No obvious resource partitioning was found in two of the lakes, while in the third lake the diets of whitefish and vendace differed significantly from each other. Here, the predominant pelagic whitefish morph fed extensively on water mites whereas vendace mainly consumed surface insects and to some extent small fish, apparently as a result of highly depleted zooplankton resources. The results suggest that various levels of resource depletion following the vendace invasion caused the observed differences between the lakes, indicating that different levels of resource partitioning were associated with dissimilar competition intensities. At present, coexistence of these congeneric species seems to be possible, although the vendace invasion has apparently resulted in a challenging and unstable situation for the planktivorous whitefish.  相似文献

Some aspects of the biology of the schelly Coregonus lavaretus (L.) were investigated by examining 188 that had passed down an aqueduct from Haweswater and 437 that were caught in gill nets set in Ullswater. In both lakes the main breeding season is from mid January to mid February, and in Ullswater spawning takes place in shallow water [less than 7.6 m (25 feet)] on a sandy bottom with stones and weed, at the entrance to a bay. The males in Haweswater first spawn when 3 years old and in Ullswater when 2; and the females first spawn in Haweswater when 4 years old, and in Ullswater when 3. Scales were kept from every fish and were found suitable for age determination. Some Haweswater schelly live for 9 years, but from Ullswater the oldest was 8. The rate of growth of male Haweswater schelly was very well described by the equation: (where lt(=the length at time t) but the curve had to be transposed a further year to describe adequately the Ullswater male schelly growth. It is clear that the rates of growth are similar in the two lakes after the first year, during which it is much faster in Ullswater. A study of the length-weight relation showed that the weight is proportional to the length cubed, and no difference in condition was found between males and females. The schelly egg was found to be slightly sticky, spherical and 2.98 mm in diameter. Some fertilized eggs were kept at various constant temperatures. At 4°C and 6°C the death rate was low, but was higher at 8°C and total mortality occured at 10°C. This low upper lethal temperature probably restricts the spawning season to mid-winter and also limits the species' geographical range, as has also been suggested for the char Salvelitms alpinus (L.) whose eggs have similar temperature requirements. Some eggs were reared to adults, and these provided corroboration of the validity of the scales for age determination. Two other points mentioned in this paper were the occasional winter strandings of schelly, and the incidence of a supernumerary pelvic fin.  相似文献

Stomach contents of powan caught throughout the year from Loch Lomond and Loch Eck were examined. Adult powan in Loch Lomond fed mainly on planktonic Cladocera, switching to benthic food during December-April. Bosmina coregoni was the principal planktonic food with Daphnia hyalina an important late summer and autumn prey. Loch Eck powan fed throughout the year on chironomid larvae and Pisidium spp. from the benthos and ingested large amounts of non-food material. Mean dry weights of food in stomachs were correlated with water temperature in Loch Lomond but not in Loch Eck and were higher in powan from Loch Eck over most of the year.  相似文献

As a superior competitor for planktonic food, vendace (Coregonus albula), when abundant, is expected to displace whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) from feeding on plankton and to force it to rely more on benthic food. The predicted result would be a reduced abundance of the copepod-transmitted cestode Triaenophorus crassus in whitefish, but an increase in the abundance of the nematode Cystidicola farionis transmitted via benthic amphipods. We studied the occurrence of both parasites in whitefish during 1991-1996 in three interconnected areas at Lake Saimaa, Finland, where the densities of the vendace stocks varied due to natural fluctuation in year-class strengths. In accordance with our hypothesis, some indication of the effect of the density of the vendace population on abundance of C. farionis infection in whitefish was found, but not in the case of T. crassus. Only 0.2% of vendace were infected with T. crassus, while up to 100% of the whitefish in the yearly samples harboured the parasite. In further experiments we clarified which copepod species in Lake Saimaa act as first intermediate hosts of T. crassus, and verified from stomach samples the exposure of both whitefish and vendace to those species. Experimental infections indicated that the infectivity of T. crassus is lower for vendace than for whitefish. We suggest that the reason why vendace stock density does not affect T. crassus infection in whitefish is that T. crassus is transmitted in littoral areas during a short period in spring. At that time of the year copepods are abundant and available to both whitefish and vendace, but since the parasite is less infective to vendace. they do not become infected. At other times of the year, dense vendace stocks may force whitefish to shift to benthic food, which includes amphipods transmitting C. farionis. During vendace stock decline, whitefish may, however, continue to feed on plankton and avoid exposure to C. farionis.  相似文献

Rapid and dramatic change in the fish community of Loch Lomond has resulted from a series of fish introductions in recent years. A comparison of the diet of pike, Esox lucius L., in 1989–1990 with data from 1955–1967, prior to recent introductions, demonstrates a shift in prey choice. In 1955–1967 powan, Coregonus lavaretus (L.), dominated in the diet (57% of prey by number) by 1989–1990 the introduced ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernuus (L.), was the commonest prey species (44% by number). This shift in pike predation to an abundant population of introduced ruffe has consequences for native species. Assuming that the pike population has not increased in response to increased food availability due to the introduction of ruffe, pike predation pressure on native species will be relieved. This is likely to have the greatest effect on powan. Comparison of the predation rate in 1955–1967 with 1989–1990 supports the hypothesis that the rate of predation on powan has declined, although the effect that this may have on the powan population is unclear, as the role of predation in the regulation of population size is unknown for this species.  相似文献

Stomach contents of pollan caught monthly throughout the year were examined. Stomach fullness was significantly correlated with water temperature. Adult pollan fed on bottom fauna, mainly chironomid larvae, in October-March, chironomid pupae in April and on Daphnia spp. in May-September. Immature (0+ and 1 +) fish also ate other cladocerans and copepods. While there is no evidence for selection of any benthic prey species, adult pollan appear to be highly selective feeders on Daphnia spp. in summer.  相似文献

In a study of habitat selection and size structure in three fish species in 115 Swedish lakes, roach Rutilus rutilus used the pelagic habitat to a lesser extent and were lower in pelagic biomass in the presence of vendace Coregonus albula. Size distributions of roach were skewed toward larger sizes in lakes with vendace, although a similar pattern of size-dependent habitat use was found regardless of lake group. In disagreement with predictions, vendace did not affect relative perch Perca fluviatilis biomass, size structure, or the proportion of large perch. However, a higher growth for large perch indicated higher per capita energy intake in lakes with vendace.  相似文献

The gastric evacuation rates of burbot Lota lota , fed a single meal of vendace, Coregonus albula , were measured in the laboratory at five temperatures (1·3, 2·6, 4·8, 9·4 and 12·6° C). Gastric evacuation rate increased exponentially with increasing temperatrure, but the results suggest that gastric evacuation rates of burbot at low temperatures are lower than those of other freshwater fish species. Temperature and the ratio of meal weight to burbot weight were the most important factors affecting gastric evacuation rate. There was no significant difference in gastric evacuation rate between three different prey species: vendace, perch Perca fluviatilis , and smelt Osmerus eperlanus .  相似文献

Alexandrium tamarense is a cyst-forming dinoflagellate that can cause toxicity in shellfish. Belfast Lough, in northeast Ireland, has experienced toxicity events due to the presence of A. tamarense, which are monitored because of shellfish farms in the Lough. Since 1992 anthropogenic influences on the Lough have changed with the introduction of a ‘fast cat’ ferry service and an increase in mussel farming. In 2002 Belfast Lough was surveyed for A. tamarense cyst distribution in the sediments and the results are compared to a previous cyst survey carried out in the Lough in 1992. Cyst numbers were generally lower in 2002 than in 1992 (t-test, P < 0.01). The highest concentration found in 2002 was 1058 cysts g?1 dry sediment compared with 3330 in 1992. Although sediment disturbance increased in the period between the surveys and plays a role in cyst distribution, A. tamarense cysts are still present in the seabed of the Lough. These cysts remain an important repository of inoculating cells for A. tamarense blooms that have not been removed by the recent anthropogenic activity in the Lough and therefore the requirement for monitoring remains. Comparisons between cyst counts per volume of wet sediment and per weight of dry sediment were carried out, and although the first is needed for ecological studies allowing a deeper analysis, it is also recommended that cyst counts per dry weight of sediment are always reported for wider comparative purposes.  相似文献

The ecology of four relict Irish populations of pollan ( Coregonus autumnalis ) is compared with that of the species elsewhere, and used to advocate conservation. The threats to these populations from introduced/invasive species, habitat degradation, climate warming and commercial exploitation are summarized and the legislation governing conservation of the stocks is reviewed. Conservation options (legislation, habitat restoration, stock translocation and stock augmentation) are outlined and their practicality and efficacy considered. A preliminary search indicates that there are a number of lakes that appear to be suitable for pollan translocation.  相似文献

The genetic analysis is made on the population of the European smelt Osmerus eperlanus occasionally introduced to Lake Syamozero (Karelia) and of the vendace Coregous albula supposedly acclimatized in Solovetskie Islands as a result of fish cultural activities of the Solovetskii Monastery. They are compared with several natural populations—possible donors for both introductions. Genetic variation in a sample of smelt was estimated by means of restrictase analysis of mtDNA (fragment ND1/ND2) in samples of vendace—by means of allozyme analysis of six isoenzyme systems. The probable population for the Syamozero smelt is the population of Onega Lake in spite of the previously noted greater morphological similarity of colonizers with the smelt of Ladoga Lake. A high level of genetic variation in the Syamozero smelt in comparison with native populations indicates that, beside the introduction from Onega Lake, there were repeated introductions from neighboring water bodies. The genetic analysis of the Solovetskaya vendace does not prove that the vendace appeared on islands due to acclimatization. Frequencies of alleles of allozyme loci in the Solovetskaya population significantly differ from frequencies in continental populations. Still, it is compared with some populations of the Arkhangelsk oblast. Estimations of genetic diversity of the Solovetskaya vendace turned out to be comparable with those in native populations.  相似文献

The fat content of muscle, liver and eggs of vendace (Coregonus albula L.) were measured during the maturation of ovaries in summer. The fat content of eggs was at its highest in July and that of muscle in August during the optimal feeding season. Significant differences were not found in fat content between lakes Suvasvesi and Southern-Kallavesi in central Finland. There were no essential differences in fatty acid composition between muscle, liver and eggs of Lake Suvasvesi vendace. During the last month before spawning in October the gross energy and fat contents of eggs decreased in Lake Suvasvesi vendace. The fat and vitamin C contents of muscle as well as the liver index of females decreased during this time also. In males the corresponding decrease did not occur, indicating that spawning is a greater stress for females than for males. The egg quality and condition of Lake Inarijärvi vendace were about the same as those of Lake Suvasvesi vendace. The unfavourable conditions of Lake Inarijärvi, located in northern Finland, are reflected in the size of ovaries, which is known to be smaller (gonadosomatic index < 20%) than in Lake Suvasvesi (GSI 26–27%). Vendace, then, maintain the quality of eggs at the expense of their number.  相似文献

In 1989–1998, vendace larvae Coregonus albula were sampled in Finnish lakes following a stratified random sampling design. The abundance of young–of–the–year vendace after the first growing season was estimated using catch–per–unit–effort statistics. The number or total area of nursery places hardly limited the recruitment of vendace in the study lakes. The major proportion of prerecruit mortality of vendace occurred in the larval phase and larval sampling produced significant information on young–of–the–year survival. Although larval abundances and recruitment were clearly associated only in Lake Onkamo, generally high larval abundance was needed to produce high number of recruits.  相似文献

Three electrophoretically separable phenotypes of heart and lateral line muscle myoglobin were found in the Irish pollan (Coregonus pollan). This polymorphism appears to be under the control of two co-dominant alleles. The allele frequencies were found to be virtually identical in samples from two lakes which have probably been isolated since the close of the last Ice Age. A significant excess of heterozygotes was found in samples from both lakes. This myoglobin polymorphism appears to be balanced, maintained due to heterozygote superiority.  相似文献

The Osensjmn vendace, Coregonus albula (L.), population was founded in 1895 by introduction of about 90 000 fry from Lake Mjøsa. After 92 years, or about 46 generations of isolation, remarkable genetic changes were evident among the transplants compared to their source population. Electrophoresis of 33 enzyme loci revealed that allele frequencies differed significantly in eight of the 10 polymorphic loci. Nei's unbiased genetic distance was D = 0.012, representing the level of population differentiation usually observed among distant watercourses in vendace. Genetic variability was clearly higher among the transplants: average observed heterozygosity was 14.8% compared with 11.2% among Lake Mjøsa vendace. The high genetic variation among Osensjoen vendace shows that the divergence is not due to a small number of founders or bottlenecks in later generations. Selection by the contrasting environmental conditions between the habitats of the donor and transplanted populations is the most plausible hypothesis to explain the genetic changes in the Osensjsen vendace.  相似文献
