Background

Heat stress induces various physiological changes and so could influence ocular circulation. This study examined the effect of heat stress on ocular blood flow.

Findings

Ocular blood flow, end-tidal carbon dioxide (PETCO2) and blood pressure were measured for 12 healthy subjects wearing water-perfused tube-lined suits under two conditions of water circulation: (1) at 35°C (normothermia) for 30 min and (2) at 50°C for 90 min (passive heat stress). The blood-flow velocities in the superior temporal retinal arteriole (STRA), superior nasal retinal arteriole (SNRA), and the retinal and choroidal vessels (RCV) were measured using laser-speckle flowgraphy. Blood flow in the STRA and SNRA was calculated from the integral of a cross-sectional map of blood velocity. PETCO2 was clamped at the normothermia level by adding 5% CO2 to the inspired gas. Passive heat stress had no effect on the subjects’ blood pressures. The blood-flow velocity in the RCV was significantly lower after 30, 60 and 90 min of passive heat stress than the normothermic level, with a peak decrease of 18 ± 3% (mean ± SE) at 90 min. Blood flow in the STRA and SNRA decreased significantly after 90 min of passive heat stress conditions, with peak decreases of 14 ± 3% and 14 ± 4%, respectively.

Conclusion

The findings of this study suggest that passive heat stress decreases ocular blood flow irrespective of the blood pressure or arterial partial pressure of CO2.  相似文献

Muscle blood flow and muscle metabolism during exercise and heat stress   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The effect of heat stress on blood flow and metabolism in an exercising leg was studied in seven subjects walking uphill (12-17%) at 5 km/h on a treadmill for 90 min or until exhaustion. The first 30 min of exercise were performed in a cool environment (18-21 degrees C); then subjects moved to an adjacent room at 40 degrees C and continued to exercise at the same speed and inclination for a further 60 min or to exhaustion, whichever occurred first. The rate of O2 consumption, 2.6 l/min (1.8-3.3) (average from cool and hot conditions), corresponded to 55-77% of their individual maximums. In the cool environment a steady state was reached at 30 min. When the subjects were shifted to the hot room, the core temperature and heart rate started to rise and reached values greater than 39 degrees C and near-maximal values, respectively, at the termination of the exercise. The leg blood flow (thermodilution method), femoral arteriovenous O2 difference, and consequently leg O2 consumption were unchanged in the hot compared with the cool condition. There was no increase in release of lactate and no reduction in glucose and free net fatty acid uptake in the exercising leg in the heat. Furthermore, the rate of glycogen utilization in the gastrocnemius muscle was not elevated in the hot environment. There was a tendency for cardiac output to increase in the heat (mean 15.2 to 18.4 l/min), which may have contributed to the increase in skin circulation, together with a possible further reduction in flow to other vascular beds, because muscle blood flow was not reduced.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

During exercise in a hot environment, blood flow in the exercising muscles may be reduced in favour of the cutaneous circulation. The aim of our study was to examine whether an acute heat exposure (65-70 degrees C) in sauna conditions reduces the blood flow in forearm muscles during handgrip exercise in comparison to tests at thermoneutrality (25 degrees C). Nine healthy men performed dynamic handgrip exercise of the right hand by rhythmically squeezing a water-filled rubber tube at 13% (light), and at 34% (moderate) of maximal voluntary contraction. The left arm served as a control. The muscle blood flow was estimated as the difference in plethysmographic blood flow between the exercising and the control forearm. Skin blood flow was estimated by laser Doppler flowmetry in both forearms. Oesophageal temperature averaged 36.92 (SEM 0.08) degrees C at thermoneutrality, and 37.74 (SEM 0.07) degrees C (P less than 0.01) at the end of the heat stress. The corresponding values for heart rate were 58 (SEM 2) and 99 (SEM 5) beats.min-1 (P less than 0.01), respectively. At 25 degrees C, handgrip exercise increased blood flow in the exercising forearm above the control forearm by 6.0 (SEM 0.8) ml.100 ml-1.min-1 during light exercise, and by 17.9 (SEM 2.5) ml.100 ml-1.min-1 during moderate exercise. In the heat, the increases were significantly higher: 12.5 (SEM 2.2) ml.100 ml-1.min-1 at the light exercise level (P less than 0.01), and 32.2 (SEM 5.9) ml.100 ml-1.min-1 (P less than 0.05) at the moderate exercise level.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of assuming constant reduced scattering coefficient (mu'(s)) on the muscle oxygenation response to incremental exercise and its recovery kinetics. Fifteen subjects (age: 24 +/- 5 yr) underwent incremental cycling exercise. Frequency domain near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to estimate deoxyhemoglobin concentration {[deoxy(Hb+Mb)]} (where Mb is myoglobin), oxyhemoglobin concentration {[oxy(Hb+Mb)]}, total Hb concentration (Total[Hb+Mb]), and tissue O(2) saturation (Sti(O(2))), incorporating both continuous measurements of mu'(s) and assuming constant mu'(s). When measuring mu'(s), we observed significant changes in NIRS variables at peak work rate Delta[deoxy(Hb+Mb)] (15.0 +/- 7.8 microM), Delta[oxy(Hb+Mb)] (-4.8 +/- 5.8 microM), DeltaTotal[Hb+Mb] (10.9 +/- 8.4 microM), and DeltaSti(O(2))(-11.8 +/- 4.1%). Assuming constant mu'(s) resulted in greater (P < 0.01 vs. measured mu'(s)) changes in the NIRS variables at peak work rate, where Delta[deoxy(Hb+Mb)] = 24.5 +/- 15.6 microM, Delta[oxy(Hb+Mb)] = -9.7 +/- 8.2 microM, DeltaTotal[Hb+Mb] = 14.8 +/- 8.7 microM, and DeltaSti(O(2))= -18.7 +/- 8.4%. Regarding the recovery kinetics, the large 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the difference between those determine measuring mu'(s) and assuming constant mu'(s) suggested poor agreement between methods. For the mean response time (MRT), which describes the overall kinetics, the 95% confidence intervals were MRT - [deoxy(Hb+Mb)] = 26.7 s; MRT - [oxy(Hb+Mb)] = 11.8 s, and MRT - Sti(O(2))= 11.8 s. In conclusion, mu'(s) changed from light to peak exercise. Furthermore, assuming a constant mu'(s) led to an overestimation of the changes in NIRS variables during exercise and distortion of the recovery kinetics.  相似文献

Hypohydration is associated with orthostatic intolerance; however, little is known about cerebrovascular mechanisms responsible. This study examined whether hypohydration reduces cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) in response to an orthostatic challenge. Eight subjects completed four orthostatic challenges (temperate conditions) twice before (Pre-EU and Pre-Hyp) and following recovery from passive heat stress ( approximately 3 h at 45 degrees C, 50% relative humidity, 1 m/s air speed) with (Post-EU) or without (Post-Hyp) fluid replacement of sweat losses (-3% body mass loss). Measurements included CBFV, mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), end-tidal CO(2), and core and skin temperatures. Test sessions included being seated (20 min) followed by standing (60 s) then resitting (60 s) with metronomic breathing (15 breaths/min). CBFV and MAP responses to standing were similar during Pre-EU and Pre-Hyp. Standing Post-Hyp exacerbated the magnitude (-28.0 +/- 1.4% of baseline) and duration (9.0 +/- 1.6 s) of CBFV reductions and increased cerebrovascular resistance (CVR) compared with Post-EU (-20.0 +/- 2.1% and 6.6 +/- 0.9 s). Standing Post-EU also resulted in a reduction in CBFV, and a smaller decrease in CVR compared with Pre-EU. MAP decreases were similar for Post-EU (-18 +/- 4 mmHg) and Post-Hyp (-21 +/- 5 mmHg) from seated to standing. These data demonstrate that despite similar MAP decreases, hypohydration, and prior heat stress (despite apparent recovery) produce greater CBFV reduction when standing. These observations suggest that hypohydration and prior heat stress are associated with greater reductions in CBFV with greater CVR, which likely contribute to orthostatic intolerance.  相似文献

A combined heat clearance method for tissue blood flow measurement.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Tissue Blood Flow is measured by applying a combined procedure of two independent approaches based on heat clearance: the Pulse Decay Method and the Continuous Method. The Pulse Method allows absolute assessment of tissue BF with no need for calibration, and can be applied only if the tissue BF is steady during the period of measurement. On the other hand, the Continuous Method enables the observation of rapid changes in tissue BF, and can be applied under non steady-state conditions. Using the combined method, a continuous quantitative measurement of transient changes in tissue BF can be obtained. For this purpose, we have developed two experimental systems consisting of independent electronic units: a Pulse Unit and a Continuous Unit. A micro-computer with dedicated software controls the operation of the electronic units and calculates tissue BF on-line. In vitro measurements are performed and demonstrate the reliability of the methods. In vivo measurements in rat brain tissue are also performed and include physiological and pharmacological changes of local tissue BF. The results of the two heat clearance methods correlate well with tissue BF values measured by a third independent method, the Hydrogen Clearance Method.  相似文献

Forearm skin blood flow was measured in six male subjects by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and venous occlusion plethysmography (VOP) during constant-load (125-200 W) upright bicycle exercise in a warm environment (X + SD, ta 34.6 +/- 0.2 degrees C) and during a 15 min sauna bath (ta 69.0 +/- 2.8 degrees C). During the sauna test the LDF values correlated well with the VOP measurements in the initial phase of active cutaneous vasodilation, after which the LDF values almost leveled off in spite of a steady increase in VOP measurements. During the exercise the mean VOP and LDF values rose in parallel with each other to steady state levels. The relationship between the results of the two methods proved to be nonlinear. It was concluded that different parameters were measured by VOP and LDF. The latter measured mainly the integrated velocity of blood flow in the outermost cutaneous tissue, and this velocity seemed to be partly dependent on the level of the arterial inflow (VOP), but also on the prevailing pressure-flow and pressure-volume relations in the cutaneous vascular bed.  相似文献

The effect of heat stress on circulation in an exercising leg was determined using one-legged knee extension and two-legged bicycle exercise, both seated and upright. Subjects exercised for three successive 25-min periods wearing a water-perfused suit: control [CT, mean skin temperature (Tsk) = 35 degrees C], hot (H, Tsk = 38 degrees C), and cold (C, Tsk = 31 degrees C). During the heating period, esophageal temperature increased to a maximum of 37.91, 39.35, and 39.05 degrees C in the three types of exercise, respectively. There were no significant changes in pulmonary O2 uptake (VO2) throughout the entire exercise period with either one or two legs. Leg blood flow (LBF), measured in the femoral vein of one leg by thermodilution, remained unchanged between CT, H, and C periods. Venous plasma lactate concentration gradually declined over time, and no trend for an increased lactate release during the heating period was found. Similarly, femoral arteriovenous O2 difference and leg VO2 remained unchanged between the three exercise periods. Although cardiac output (acetylene rebreathing) was not significantly higher during H, there was a tendency for an increase of 1 and 2 l/min in one- and two-legged exercise, respectively, which could account for part of the increase in total skin blood flow during heating (gauged by changes in forearm blood flow). Because LBF was not reduced during exercise and heat stress in these experiments, the additional increase in skin blood flow must have been met by redistribution of blood away from vascular beds other than active skeletal muscle.  相似文献

During exercise, circulatory reflexes ensure that the cardiac output is sufficiently elevated to meet the oxygen delivery requirements of the contracting skeletal muscles and the heat delivery requirements of the body to the skin. The latter requirements are met by increasing skin blood flow. These increases are largely driven by elevations in the body temperatures, although non-thermal effects on the control of skin blood flow occur in certain conditions. These effects are largely the consequence of high and/or low baroreflex stimulation. Even in the face of such non-thermal effects, which occur during exercise in the heat, the body's requirements for heat transfer from core to skin are largely met by the increased skin blood flow. Thus, non-thermal effects on the control of skin blood flow are relatively unimportant in the body's overall regulatory response to exercise.  相似文献

The relationship between flow motion and tissue oxygenation was investigated during hemorrhage/retransfusion with and without dopamine in 14 pigs. During 45% bleed, jejunal microvascular hemoglobin O(2) saturation (HBjO(2)) and mucosal tissue Po(2) (Po(2)muc) were recorded in seven control and seven dopamine-treated animals. Mean arterial pressure and systemic O(2) delivery decreased during hemorrhage and returned to baseline after retransfusion. Hemorrhage decreased Po(2)muc from 33 +/- 2.8 to 13 +/- 1.6 mmHg and HBjO(2) from 53 +/- 4.9% to 32 +/- 3.9%, respectively, in control animals. During reperfusion, Po(2)muc and HBjO(2) remained low. Dopamine increased Po(2)muc from 28 +/- 4.3 to 45 +/- 4.6 mmHg and HBjO(2) from 54 +/- 5.7% to 69 +/- 1.5% and attenuated the decrease in Po(2)muc and HBjO(2) during hemorrhage. After retransfusion, dopamine restored Po(2)muc and HBjO(2) to baseline. Control animals developed rhythmic HBjO(2) oscillations with increasing amplitude (frequency, 4.5 to 7.6 cycles/min) and showed an inverse relationship between Po(2)muc and HBjO(2) oscillation amplitude. Dopamine prevented regular flow motion. The association between decreased Po(2)muc and increased oscillations in HBjO(2) after normalization of systemic hemodynamics and O(2) transport in control animals suggests a cause-and-effect relationship between low tissue Po(2) and flow motion activity within the jejunal microcirculation.  相似文献

Control of skin blood flow (SkBF) is on the efferent arm of both thermoregulatory and nonthermoregulatory reflexes. To what extent aging may affect the SkBF response when these two reflex systems interact is unknown. To determine the response of aged skin to the unloading of baroreceptors in thermoneutral, cold stress, and heat stress conditions, sequential bouts of nonhypotensive lower body negative pressure (LBNP) were applied at -10, -20, and -30 mmHg in 14 young (18-25 yr) and 14 older (63-78 yr) men. SkBF was measured by laser-Doppler velocimetry (averaged over 2 forearm sites), and data are expressed as percentage of maximal cutaneous vascular conductance (%CVC(max)). Total forearm blood flow was measured by venous occlusion plethysmography, and forearm vascular conductance (FVC) was calculated as the ratio of forearm blood flow to mean arterial pressure. In young men, all three intensities of LBNP in thermoneutrality decreased FVC significantly (P < 0.05), but FVC at -10 mmHg did not change in the older men. There were no significant LBNP effects on %CVC(max). Application of LBNP during cold stress did not significantly change %CVC(max) or FVC in either age group. During heat stress, -10 to -30 mmHg of LBNP decreased FVC significantly (P < 0.05) in both age groups, but these decreases were attenuated in the older men (P < 0.05). %CVC(max) decreased at -30 mmHg in the younger men only. These results suggest that older men have an attenuated skin vasoconstrictor response to the unloading of baroreceptors in heat stress conditions. Furthermore, the forearm vasoconstriction elicited by LBNP in older men reflects that of underlying tissue (i.e., muscle) rather than that of skin, whereas -30 mmHg LBNP also decreases SkBF in young hyperthermic men.  相似文献

Renal and splanchnic sympathetic nerve discharge (SND) responses to heating are significantly reduced in senescent compared with young Fischer-344 (F344) rats (Kenney MJ and Fels RJ. Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol 283: R513-R520, 2002). However, the functional significance of this finding is not known. We tested the hypothesis that blood flow distribution profiles to heating are altered in senescent (24 mo old) compared with mature (12 mo old) and young (3 mo old) F344 rats. Visceral organ, skeletal muscle, and tail blood flows were determined with the radionuclide-tagged microsphere technique before (control, 38 degrees C) and during heating that increased body temperature to 41 degrees C in anesthetized F344 rats. Vascular conductance in the kidney, stomach, large intestine, pancreas, spleen, and tail was significantly reduced during control before heating in senescent compared with young F344 rats. Heating significantly decreased kidney, stomach, small and large intestine, and pancreas vascular conductance in young and mature but not senescent F344 rats. Vascular conductance at 41 degrees C in the kidney and small intestine was significantly lower and in the stomach tended to be lower in young compared with senescent rats. Splenic conductance increased during heating in young and senescent rats but was highest in young rats. Tail conductance during heating was significantly increased in young rats but remained unchanged in mature and senescent rats. These results demonstrate a marked attenuation in heating-induced vascular conductance changes in senescent rats, suggesting an important functional consequence for the attenuated SND responses to heating in aged rats.  相似文献

A new electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) oximetry probe, based on a naphthalocyanine macrocycle, is reported to exhibit high oxygen sensitivity and favorable EPR characteristics for biological applications. The free radical probe, lithium naphthalocyanine (LiNc), is synthesized as fine microcrystalline powder with particle size less than 1 microm and high spin density. It exhibits a single sharp EPR peak, whose width varies linearly with oxygen partial pressure (pO2). The EPR spectrum is nonsaturable at typical microwave power levels (< 25 mW at X-band). These unique characteristics make this probe ideal for measuring oxygen concentration in biological tissues, in vivo. The peak-to-peak width under anoxic conditions is 0.51 G (at X-band), and it increases linearly with increase in oxygen partial pressure and reaches 26.0 G for 100% oxygen (760 mmHg), showing an oxygen sensitivity of 34 mG/mmHg. The probe responds to changes in pO2 quickly and reproducibly, thus enabling dynamic measurements of regional oxygenation in real time. The application of this probe for oximetry is demonstrated in an in vivo biological system. The changes in pO2 were monitored in the leg muscle tissue of a living mouse breathing room air and carbogen (95% oxygen + 5% CO2), alternatively. The mean pO2 measured with this probe in muscle tissues was consistent with values reported previously using other methods. Overall, the probe shows very desirable characteristics for localized measurements of tissue oxygenation.  相似文献

Spinal cord-injured (SCI) individuals, having a sympathetic nervous system lesion, experience hypotension during sitting and standing. Surprisingly, they experience few syncopal events. This suggests adaptations in cerebrovascular regulation. Therefore, changes in systemic circulation, cerebral blood flow, and oxygenation in eight SCI individuals were compared with eight able-bodied (AB) individuals. Systemic circulation was manipulated by lower body negative pressure at several levels down to -60 mmHg. At each level, we measured steady-state blood pressure, changes in cerebral blood velocity with transcranial Doppler, and cerebral oxygenation using near-infrared spectroscopy. We found that mean arterial pressure decreased significantly in SCI but not in AB individuals, in accordance with the sympathetic impairment in the SCI group. Cerebral blood flow velocity decreased during orthostatic stress in both groups, but this decrease was significantly greater in SCI individuals. Cerebral oxygenation decreased in both groups, with a tendency to a greater decrease in SCI individuals. Thus present data do not support an advantageous mechanism during orthostatic stress in the cerebrovascular regulation of SCI individuals.  相似文献

1. 1. The ability to increase skin blood flow is an important mechanism for transferring heat from the body core to the skin for dissipation.

2. 2. During exercise, skin blood flow is typically 20–40% lower in men and women aged 55 and over (compared with 20–30 years old) at a given body core temperature. Yet criterion measures of heat tolerance (changes in core temperature, heat storage) often show minimal or no age-related alterations. From a series of studies conducted in our laboratory over the past 5 years, the following conclusions can be drawn.

3. 3. When fit healthy older subjects are matched with younger subjects of the same gender, size and body composition, VO2max, acclimation state, and hydration level, age-related differences in skin blood flow are evident. However, these differences often do not translate into “poorer” heat tolerance or higher core temperatures.

4. 4. The larger core-to-skin thermal gradient maintained by the older individuals allows for effective heat transfer at lower skin blood flows.

5. 5. Furthermore, there is an increased coefficient of variation for thermoregulatory response variables with increasing age.

6. 6. Despite differences in the mechanisms underlying thermoregulation, true thermal tolerance is less a function of chronological age than of functional capacity and physiological health status.

7. 7. While this conclusion is based primarily on cross-sectional studies, it is supported by the results of more recent studies using multiple regression analyses.

8. 8. Implicit in this conclusion is the notion that thermal tolerance, at any age, is a modifiable individual characteristic.

Using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and the tracer indocyanine green (ICG), we quantified blood flow in calf muscle and around the Achilles tendon during plantar flexion (1-9 W). For comparison, blood flow in calf muscle was determined by dye dilution in combination with magnetic resonance imaging measures of muscle volume, and, for the peritendon region, blood flow was measured by (133)Xe washout. From rest to a peak load of 9 W, NIRS-ICG blood flow in calf muscle increased from 2.4+/-0.2 to 74+/-5 ml x 100 ml tissue(-1) x min(-1), similar to that measured by reverse dye (77+/-6 ml x 100 ml tissue(-1) x min(-1)). Achilles peritendon blood flow measured by NIRS-ICG rose with exercise from 2.2+/-0.5 to 15.1+/-0.2 ml x 100 ml(-1) x min(-1), which was similar to that determined by (133)Xe washout (2.0+/-0.6 to 14.6+/-0.3 ml x 100 ml tissue(-1) x min(-1)). This is the first study using NIRS and ICG to quantify regional tissue blood flow during exercise in humans. Due to its high spatial and temporal resolution, the technique may be useful for determining regional blood flow distribution and regulation during exercise in humans.  相似文献

The effect of irradiation of the central nervous system by microwaves (MW) at a frequency of 2450 MHz and power 5-40 W on the regulation of cerebral circulation and oxygen supply to the nervous tissue were studied in rabbits. Local irradiation of the exposed cerebral cortex resulted in hyperemia and hyperoxia in the zone of exposure induced by the hyperthermal effect of MW. When the region of the medulla oblongata was irradiated even with low MW power (not leading to hyperthermia), the local circulation and oxygen tension increased in the whole brain, apparently due to the impairment of the regulation of the cerebral blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain tissue.  相似文献
