  • 1 The littoral microcrustacean community (Cladocera and Copepoda) was examined from 1989 to 1991 in a lake experimentally acidified to pH 4.5, and from 1992 to 1997 during the early stages of pH recovery.
  • 2 Cladoceran abundance declined significantly from 1989 to 1991 (pH 4.5), but species richness did not change. Acantholeberis curvirostris, Simocephalus serrulatus, Latona spp. (Latona setifera, L. parviremis), and all species of chydorid Cladocera declined markedly in abundance while at pH 4.5. The abundance of cyclopoid copepods was low and Ceriodaphnia and calanoid copepods were absent.
  • 3 Recovery of the community was subsequently monitored as pH was incrementally changed to a target pH 5.1 in 1992 and 1993, and to 5.8 in 1994–97. Species richness remained unchanged. Chydorid cladocerans remained at low abundance in 1992, and only Chydorus cf. brevilabris increased substantially from 1993 to 1996. Non‐chydorid Cladocera increased in abundance in 1992, declined again in 1993, then gradually increased (mainly due to Ophryoxus gracilis) in 1994–96. All species declined in 1997 as minnows recolonized the lake. The calanoid copepod Leptodiaptomus minutus was present in low numbers in 1997.

The Great Lakes ecosystem is home to at least 139 non-indigenous species of fauna and flora which have become established following invasions or intentional introductions. About ten percent of the exotic species have caused economic or ecological damage to the system. A sample of this group is reviewed to determine if ecological concepts are useful in helping to predict colonization and impacts to ecosystem health. Successful colonization by most of the species reviewed was predictable from habitat requirements and behaviour. Ecosystem disturbance was a factor in the success of some of the colonists but was not an overriding ecological requirement. Perturbations to ecosystem health are more difficult to predict and in most cases were not readily apparent from knowledge about the ecology of invaders or native communities. The main damage to ecosystem health by the species reviewed resulted from competition, predation and habitat modification. Difficulties in predicting both invasions and damage from successful colonists point to the need to prevent non-indigenous species from reaching the Great Lakes basin.  相似文献

1. Acidification has damaged biota in thousands of lakes and streams throughout eastern North America. Fortunately, reduced emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides beginning in the 1960s have allowed pH levels in many affected systems to increase. Determining the extent of biological and pH recovery in these systems is necessary to assess the success of emissions reductions programmes. 2. Although there have been promising signs of biological recovery in many systems, recovery has occurred more slowly than expected for some taxa. Past studies with crustacean zooplankton indicate that a mixture of local abiotic variables, biotic variables and dispersal processes may influence the structure of recovering communities. However, most studies have been unable to determine the relative importance of these three groups of variables. 3. We assessed chemical and biological recovery of acid‐damaged lakes in Killarney Park, Ontario. In addition, we assessed the relative importance of local abiotic variables, biotic variables and dispersal processes for structuring recovering communities. We collected zooplankton community data, abiotic and biotic data from 45 Killarney Park lakes. To assess the recovery of zooplankton communities, we compared zooplankton data collected in 2005 to a survey conducted for the same lakes in 1972–73 using several univariate measures of community structure, as well as multivariate methods based on relative species abundances. To determine the factors influencing the structure of recovering zooplankton communities, we used hierarchical partitioning for univariate measures and spatial modelling and variation partitioning techniques for multivariate analyses. 4. Our survey revealed significant pH increases for the majority of sampled lakes but univariate measures of community structure, such as species richness and diversity, indicated that only minor changes have occurred in many acid‐damaged lakes. Hierarchical partitioning identified several variables that may influence our univariate measures of recovery, including pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) levels, fish presence/absence, lake surface area and lake elevation. 5. Multivariate methods revealed a shift in communities through time towards a structure more typical of neutral lakes, providing some evidence for recovery. Variation partitioning suggested that the structure of recovering copepod communities was influenced most by dispersal processes and abiotic variables, while biotic (Chaoborus densities, fish presence/absence) and abiotic variables were more important for cladoceran zooplankton. 6. Our results indicate that the recovery of zooplankton communities in Killarney Park is not yet complete, despite decades of emission reductions. The importance of variables related to acidification, such as pH and DOC, indicates that further chemical recovery may be necessary. The differing importance of abiotic, biotic and dispersal processes for structuring copepod versus cladoceran zooplankton might indicate that different management approaches and expectations for recovery are needed for these groups.  相似文献

1. Periphytic diatoms, macrophytes, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish were sampled with standard methods in 185 streams in nine European countries to compare their response to degradation. Streams were classified into two main stream type groups (i.e. lowland, mountain streams); in addition, the lowland streams were grouped into four more specific stream types. 2. Principal components analysis with altogether 43 environmental parameters was used to construct complex stressor gradients for physical–chemical, hydromorphological and land use data. About 30 metrics were calculated for each sample and organism group. Metric responses to different stress types were analysed by Spearman Rank Correlation. 3. All four organism groups showed significant response to eutrophication/organic pollution gradients. Generally, diatom metrics were most strongly correlated to eutrophication gradients (85% and 89% of the diatom metrics tested correlated significantly in mountain and lowland streams, respectively), followed by invertebrate metrics (91% and 59%). 4. Responses of the four organism groups to other gradients were less strong; all organism groups responded to varying degrees to land use changes, hydromorphological degradation on the microhabitat scale and general degradation gradients, while the response to hydromorphological gradients on the reach scale was mainly limited to benthic macroinvertebrates (50% and 44% of the metrics tested correlated significantly in mountain and lowland streams, respectively) and fish (29% and 47%). 5. Fish and macrophyte metrics generally showed a poor response to degradation gradients in mountain streams and a strong response in lowland streams. 6. General recommendations on European bioassessment of streams were derived from the results.  相似文献

区域生态系统健康评价是获取区域生态系统状况的重要手段,对生态保护和恢复具有现实的指导意义。研究从人类与生态系统耦合角度出发,基于生态系统完整性以及人类对生态系统服务的需求,在“活力-组织力-弹性”框架基础上引入生态系统服务供需指标构建评价框架。以粤港澳大湾区为例,分析2005—2018年生态系统健康时空变化特征及其对城镇化的响应。研究结果表明:(1)2005—2018年间,大湾区生态系统健康呈现中部低四周高的空间格局,以好,较好和一般水平为主;从时间变化上来看,大湾区四周山区生态系统健康状况有所改善,而中部地区健康状况则逐渐恶化。(2)大湾区生态系统活力在改善区域生态系统健康中发挥了重要的作用;此外,生态系统服务供需对传统生态系统健康评价结果进行适当修正,生态系统服务供需赤字加剧了中部地区生态系统健康状况的恶化。(3)大湾区生态系统健康与人口城镇化、土地城镇化间均存在显著的空间负相关性,其中,土地城镇化对生态系统健康的负面影响越来越显著,特别是大湾区中部地区。研究以期为生态系统健康评价提供新思路,同时为大湾区生态系统保护与管理提供参考。  相似文献

The rate of survival and stress protein (hsc/hsp70) response were investigated in the freshwater amphipod, Gammarus fossarum Koch, 1835, during a 20-day stress and recovery experiment. Adult females and males, were separately exposed to 9 different cadmium concentrations for 5 days to simulate a short-term pulse of xenobiotics in an aquatic environment, followed by a recovery period of 15 days. In terms of mortality, females were much more sensitive to cadmium than males; 4.28±2.45 g Cd2+/l resulted in strong effects on the rate of survival of females but not males. In both sexes, mortality occurred predominantly within the first 5 days of the recovery period. At the cellular level, cadmium induced an hsc/hsp70 response. The lower Cd2+ concentrations we used led to an induction of stress proteins while higher Cd2+ concentrations resulted in a proportionately reduced hsc/hsp70 response, most likely due to pathological damage. Surviving individuals retained their capacity to induce stress protein production in the recovery period, even if the stress protein response system was overwhelmed by cadmium during the exposure period.  相似文献

Nutrition research is struggling to demonstrate beneficial health effects, since nutritional effects are often subtle and long term. Health has been redefined as the ability of our body to cope with daily-life challenges. Physiology acts as a well-orchestrated machinery to adapt to the continuously changing environment. We term this adaptive capacity “phenotypic flexibility.” The phenotypic flexibility concept implies that health can be measured by the ability to adapt to conditions of temporary stress, such as physical exercise, infections or mental stress, in a healthy manner. This may offer a more sensitive way to assess changes in health status of healthy subjects. Here, we performed a systematic review of 61 studies applying different nutritional stress tests to quantify health and nutritional health effects, with the objective to define an optimal nutritional stress test that has the potential to be adopted as the golden standard in nutrition research. To acknowledge the multi-target role of nutrition, a relevant subset of 50 processes that govern optimal health, with high relevance to diet, was used to define phenotypic flexibility. Subsequently, we assessed the response of biomarkers related to this subset of processes to the different challenge tests. Based on the obtained insights, we propose a nutritional stress test composed of a high-fat, high-caloric drink, containing 60 g palm olein, 75 g glucose and 20 g dairy protein in a total volume of 400 ml. The use of such a standardized nutritional challenge test in intervention studies is expected to demonstrate subtle improvements of phenotypic flexibility, thereby enabling substantiation of nutritional health effects.

Oxidative stress (OS) plays a key role in the initiation or progression of numerous diseases, and dairy cows undergo OS at the transition period. However, discrepancies between methodologies make it difficult to make comparisons between studies, and therefore research on this topic may not be implemented in farms. This study aims to test under field conditions the use of an oxidative stress index (OSi) as a combined measurement through a ratio between pro-oxidants and antioxidants throughout the transition period in dairy farms. Serum samples of high-yielding dairy cows were taken, and markers of oxidative damage and antioxidant capacity were measured in four different production stages: (i) late lactation (LL; −2 to −1 months); (ii) prepartum (PrP; −1 month until parturition); (iii) postpartum (PsP; delivery to +1 month); and (iv) peak of lactation (PkL; +1 to +2.5 months). Values were compared between production stages and against a metabolic baseline status (CTR, 4th to 5th month of gestation). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature that discusses the values of these oxidative stress biomarkers (and the OS index) for cows with low metabolic demands, as to date most research in this area has focused on the transition period. With the joint evaluation through the OSi, differences were found that were not present with the separate evaluation of pro-oxidants or antioxidants, thus supporting our hypothesis that the OSi indicates more accurately the oxidative status of the animals. It was also confirmed that dairy cows undergo OS after parturition, and that antioxidant supplementation from 1 month before parturition until the peak of lactation may be needed to reduce the risk of OS.  相似文献

Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve (SBR) is the world's largest contiguous conserved mangrove forest with unique flora and fauna, but it still has to bear the brunt of anthropogenic disturbances due to huge population pressure. This study aimed to identify the sources, extent of metal pollution (Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn), and their potential ecological risk in this fragile ecosystem. Sediments were collected from 10 locations with varied levels of anthropogenic pressure from the fringe of the reserve forest. Cluster analysis (CA) and factor analysis (FA) identified Ni, Cd, and Pb as the major anthropogenic pollutants in this area. Concentrations of Pb (27.79–47.07 mg/kg) and Cd (0.8–3.3 mg/kg) were found to be higher in areas reliant on fossil fuel-operated motorboats for transport and dependent on rechargeable batteries to cope with the shortage of electricity. The contamination factor (Cf), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), and ecological risk index (ERI) highlight that populated areas are mostly exposed to Cd, Pb, and Cr contamination. Interpolation maps identified that the central part of the area is acutely affected by Cd pollution, whereas the main ecotourism routes within the reserve forest have high Pb concentrations. This study concludes that conservation-friendly ecotourism and improper disposal of batteries can also pose a threat to this ecosystem and these possibilities could be considered during formulation of conservation plans.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of a wide battery of biomarkers in two native species, the freshwater shrimp Palaemonetes argentinus and the macrophyte Potamogeton pusillus, experimentally exposed to zinc in order to establish the potential use of selected species as bioindicators of aquatic pollution. For this purpose, we propose the use of integrated biomarker index (IBR) with a previous selection of biomarkers using boosted regression trees (BRTs) as a new tool in ecotoxicology. Organisms were collected from a reference site, acclimated and exposed at relevant environmental zinc levels (control, 5, 50 and 500 μg Zn L−1) for 96 h. Biomarkers were measured in cephalothorax and abdomen of shrimp as well as in leaf, stem and root of plants.Significant zinc accumulation was observed in cephalothorax of P. argentinus from 50 μg Zn L−1 and from 5 μg Zn L−1 in stem and root of P. pusillus, when compared with control condition. Those effect biomarkers with significant differences among treatments were pre-selected to run out the BRTs model for each species. In P. argentinus, microsomal acetylcholinesterase activity, metallothioneins and superoxide dismutase activity measured in cephalothorax, as well as glutathione reductase activity in abdomen, showed the higher capacity to explain or predict the zinc exposure concentration. On the contrary, in P. pusillus, only chlorophyll a measured in leaf and H2O2 measured in root were the more representative of exposure concentrations, at least, within the biomarkers tested in the present study. Thereafter, IBR was calculated with the selected biomarkers in P. argentinus and showed in a sole value the organism stress, which also correlates with zinc exposure and accumulation.Natives species tested displayed a sensitive response to metal exposure, which represents an important characteristic for biomonitoring programs. Our findings suggest that the BRTs and IBR are useful and robust run tools to select the better biomarkers in toxicological studies and indicate the organism stress.  相似文献

Vibrational spectroscopy techniques have shown capacity to provide non-destructive, rapid, relevant information on microbial systematics, useful for classification and identification. Infrared spectroscopy enables the biochemical signatures from microbiological structures to be extracted and analyzed, in conjunction with advanced chemometrics. In addition, a number of recent studies have shown that Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy can help understand the molecular basis of events such as the adaptive tolerance responses expressed by bacteria when exposed to stress conditions in the environment (e.g. those that cells confront in food and during food processing). The current review gives an overview of the published experimental techniques, data-processing algorithms and approaches used in FT-IR spectroscopy to assess the mechanisms of bacterial inactivation by food processing technologies and antimicrobial compounds, to monitor the spore and membrane properties of foodborne pathogens in changing environments, to detect stress-injured microorganisms in food-related environments, to assess dynamic changes in bacterial populations, and to study bacterial tolerance responses.  相似文献

High-temperature stress affects all growth stages of crops and ultimately yields. This is further aggravated by other environmental stresses like intermittent drought and high light. Management options are few and hence developing intrinsically tolerant plants is essential to combat the situation. As thermotolerance is a multigenic trait, emphasis needs to be on relevant approaches to assess genetic variability in basal and acquired tolerance. This is in fact the major aspect in crop improvement programmes. The relevance of temperature induction (acclimation) response (TIR), a high throughput approach to identify thermotolerant individuals and its utility as potential screening method is described here. This is based on the concept that stress-responsive genes are expressed only during initial stages of stress (acclimation stress) and bring about requisite changes in cell metabolism for adaptation. The fact that acclimation response is ubiquitous has been demonstrated in different crop plants in our studies and by others. Significance of acclimation in acquired tolerance and thus in assessing genetic variability in thermotolerance is discussed. The limitations of present approaches to validate the relevance of specific stress genes either in transgenics or in mutants or knock downs have been analyzed and the need to characterize transformants under conditions that trigger acquired tolerance is also highlighted. This review also focuses on the potential of exploiting acclimation response approach to improve the thermotolerance of crop plants by suitable breeding strategies.  相似文献

Museum specimens play a crucial role in addressing key questions in systematics, evolution, ecology, and conservation. With the advent of high‐throughput sequencing technologies, specimens that have long been the foundation of important biological discoveries can inform new perspectives as sources of genomic data. Despite the many possibilities associated with analyzing DNA from historical specimens, several challenges persist. Using avian systems as a model, we review DNA extraction protocols, sequencing technologies, and capture methods that are helping researchers overcome some of these difficulties. We highlight empirical examples in which researchers have used these technologies to address fundamental questions related to avian conservation and evolution. Increasing accessibility to new sequencing technologies will provide researchers with tools to tap into the wealth of information contained within our valuable natural history collections.  相似文献

The rapid identification of known or undesirable compounds from natural products extracts — “dereplication” — is an important step in an efficiently run natural products discovery program. Dereplication strategies use analytical techniques and database searching to determine the identity of an active compound at the earliest possible stage in the discovery process. In the past few years, advances in technology have allowed the development of tandem analytical techniques such as liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), LC-MS-MS, liquid chromatography nuclear magnetic resonance (LC-NMR), and LC-NMR-MS. LC-NMR, despite its lower sensitivity as compared to LC-MS, provides a powerful tool for rapid identification of known compounds and identification of structure classes of novel compounds. LC-NMR is especially useful in instances where the data from LC-MS are incomplete or do not allow confident identification of the active component of a sample. LC-NMR has been used to identify the marine alkaloid aaptamine as the active component in an extract of the sponge Aaptos sp. This extract had been identified as an enzyme inhibitor by a high throughput screening (HTS) effort. Isolated aaptamine exhibited an IC50=120 μM against this enzyme. Marine ecosystems such as the Baltic Sea are currently under strong atmospheric and anthropogenic pressure. Besides natural and human-induced changes in climate, major anthropogenic drivers such as overfishing and anthropogenic eutrophication are significantly affecting ecosystem structure and function. Recently, studies demonstrated the existence of alternative stable states in various terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. These so-called ecosystem regime shifts have been explained mainly as a result of multiple causes, e.g. climatic regime shifts, overexploitation or a combination of both. The occurrence of ecosystem regime shifts has important management implications, as they can cause significant losses of ecological and economic resources. Because of hysteresis in ecosystem responses, restoring regimes considered as favourable may require drastic and expensive management actions. Also the Baltic Sea, the largest brackish water body in the world ocean, and its ecosystems are strongly affected by atmospheric and anthropogenic drivers. Here, we present results of an analysis of the state and development of the Central Baltic Sea ecosystem integrating hydroclimatic, nutrient, phyto- and zooplankton as well as fisheries data. Our analyses of 52 biotic and abiotic variables using multivariate statistics demonstrated a major reorganization of the ecosystem and identified two stable states between 1974 and 2005, separated by a transition period in 1988–1993. We show the change in Baltic ecosystem structure to have the characteristics of a discontinuous regime shift, initiated by climate-induced changes in the abiotic environment and stabilized by fisheries-induced feedback loops in the food web. Our results indicate the importance of maintaining the resilience of an ecosystem to atmospherically induced environmental change by reducing the anthropogenic impact.  相似文献

Contingencies of different components of freshwater biocenoses in the Don, Volga, Angara, and Northern Azov basins where studied by determination analysis. A positive contingency between the biomass of total phytoplankton or its divisions and the biomass of zooplankton was demonstrated. The most significant contingencies were revealed for zooplankton and green algae, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria. As against zooplankton, the biomass of zoobenthos features much less contingencies with the biomass of microalgae as well as zooplankton, since detritus, higher plant tissues, and small animals are the basis of the diet of benthic organisms. Differences in the contingency pattern between different geographical regions and time periods within the same basin have been revealed using the context procedure in determination analysis.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to objectively assess the response of car passengers to lateral accelerations. Surface EMG signals were collected bilaterally from the cervical erector spinae (CES), latissimus dorsi (LD), erector spinae (ES), external oblique (EO), and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles of 10 subjects. Lateral acceleration was also recorded. Three chassis-seat configurations AA, BA and BB were tested, with the first letter denoting the chassis and the second the seat. SEMG signals were often contaminated by noise, and were, therefore, denoised using the methods explained in part I. Reciprocal phasic activity was observed for all muscles except for the EO, and the reaction of passengers to lateral accelerations was interpreted as a bust torsion. The RMS of EMG segments was used as an indication of muscle activity. Muscle activation of VL and ES were significantly affected by the configuration tested (p < 0.05), with greater activation levels observed for the chassis A than for the chassis B. Such a finding implies that greater roll requires greater muscle activity, thus resulting in less comfortable vehicles. Therefore, SEMG can be used to provide an objective measure of discomfort in passengers subjected to lateral accelerations in a car seat.  相似文献

Evans and Davis claim the SER Standards use a “pure naturalness” model for restoration baselines and exclude most cultural ecosystems from the ecological restoration paradigm. The SER Standards do neither. The SER Standards consider both “natural” ecosystems (that are unequivocally not cultural) and “similar” cultural ecosystems as suitable reference models. Furthermore, Evans and Davis propose assessing whether a cultural ecosystem exhibits “good, bad, or neutral impacts from humans on ecosystems” as the basis for reference models. We argue that such an approach would overlook the indispensability of native ecosystem benchmarks to measure human impacts and provide a springboard for social‐ecological restoration.  相似文献
