Basidiomata of putative ectomycorrhizal fungi have been collected from under pine or dipterocarp stands in Central Luzon in the Philippines. Over 100 collections are reported. Among the material, 75 taxa have been recognised and assigned to known genera or at least placed close to already documented European, Japanese or North American taxa. Formal identifications for 46 species are given along with comments on previous collections from South-East Asia. Species collected from under the native Pinus kesiya resemble the communities found under three-needled pines in North America and the West Himalayas, whereas those from dipterocarp forests were similar to communities found in Malaysia and Japan. Members of the Sclerodermatales were particularly common and are probably the pioneer colonizers of young seedlings in these ecosystems.  相似文献

Long-term residents of the Philippines were skin tested with histoplasmin skin test material. This study was conducted with 143 electric company (MERALCO) employees from Manila, Philippines. We found that 37 (26 %) of the subjects were skin test positive. Characteristics of the positive group were: average age of 37 years; all except one were lifelong inhabitants of Metro Manila; 25 were male and 12 were female; one-half of the subjects reported extended contact with chickens. Despite these findings, histoplasmosis is considered to be a very rare disease in the Philippines. This survey indicates that Histoplasma capsulatum is sufficiently present in the Philippines to come in contact withone-fourth of the test population. This reinforces the hypothesis that histoplasmosis is present in the Philippines and is probably being misdiagnosed as granulomatous-inducing diseases such as tuberculosis, e.g., so-called “drug resistant” tuberculosis. We recommend larger surveys of this type and attempts to culture the etiologic agent from natural sources such as chicken and bat droppings. To determine the status of infection caused by intestinal parasites among children and adolescents living in Legaspi city, the Philippines, we performed a small survey by fecal examination for helminth ova and protozoan cysts with formalin-ether concentration method. Of the 64 examinees, the infection rate was 78.1%. The infection rates of primary school children, preschool children and adolescents were 95.5%, 64.7% and 87.5%, respectively. The infection rate in urban areas was 56%, and 92.3% in rural areas. The infection rates were 51% with Trichuris trichiura, 40% with Ascaris lumbricoides, 23.4% with hookworm, 15.6% with Iodamoeba butschlii, 14.1% with Endolimax nana, 9.4% with Entamoeba coli and 7.8% with Giardia lamblia. There were 33 cases with multiple infection (51.6%). Mixed infection with more than 3 parasites was observed in 15 cases, all of them being children and adolescents living in rural areas. By this survey, it was conjectured that helminthic infection is prevalent among children and adolescents in Legaspi, Philippines.  相似文献

Important events relating to the sovereignty dispute over the Spratly Islands have arisen by fits and starts since 2009, marking the start of a new phase in the legal battle over territorial and maritime claims in the South China Sea. While the exchange of legal arguments between the parties has gradually laid bare their maritime claims, much still remains shrouded in uncertainty. Among the obscure claims wanting clarification is China's infamous nine-dotted-line map, which in 2011 elicited a response and counterresponse between the Philippines and China. Seed storage proteins, the major food proteins, possess unique physicochemical characteristics which determine their nutritional importance and influence their utilization by humans. Here, we describe a database driven tool named Seed Pro-Nutra Care which comprises a systematic compendium of seed storage proteins and their bioactive peptides influencing several vital organ systems for maintenance of health. Seed Pro-Nutra Careis an integrated resource on seed storage protein. This resource help in the (I) Characterization of proteins whether they belong to seed storage protein group or not. (II) Identification the bioactive peptides with their sequences using peptide name (III) Determination of physico chemical properties of seed storage proteins. (IV) Epitope identification and mapping (V) Allergenicity prediction and characterization. Seed Pro-Nutra Care is a compilation of data on bioactive peptides present in seed storage proteins from our own collections and other published and unpublished sources. The database provides an information resource of a variety of seed related biological information and its use for nutritional and biomedical application.

Change of plant type in rice resulting in increased compactness of the panicle, allows space for accommodation of a larger number of spikelets, but grain yield does not increase proportionately because of limitations in grain filling. The objective of this study was to evaluate potential causes of poor filling of spikelets by comparing the physiological processes that influence source and sink activities between a compact- (OR-1920-7) and a loose-panicled (Lalat) rice cultivars growing in the open field conditions in the farm of Regional Research and Technology Transfer Station, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Chiplima, India during dry season of 2007. Although grain number per unit length of the branches was higher in the compact-panicled cultivar than the loose-panicled cultivar, average grain weight was lower on the primary and secondary branches at top, middle and basal positions of the panicle in the former compared to the corresponding positions of the panicle in the latter. Compared to Lalat, ethylene production rate was considerably higher in the boot of the flag leaf sheath of OR-1920-7 during the pre-anthesis period. Ethylene evolution rate correlated negatively with growth and cell division rates and starch concentration of the juvenile endosperm. Because spikelet growth was slower in OR-1920-7 than in Lalat, unused carbohydrates accumulated in the endosperm. The stomatal conductance of the flag leaf during this period was also lower in the former than that of the latter and it correlated negatively with ethylene evolution rate of the boot. It is concluded that high ethylene production slackened grain filling of compact-panicled rice cultivar OR-1920-7 because of its adverse influence on both source and sink activities.  相似文献

Thirty-eight genera and 81 species of fungi were isolated and identified from 120 samples of 24 kinds of spices collected from different places at Assiut Governorate, Egypt. Local fisherfolk and fishpond owners have been practicing “restoration” of mangrove forests in some parts of the Philippines for decades, well before governments and non‐government organizations began to promote the activity as a conservation tool. This paper examines ecological characteristics of these mangrove plantations and compares them to natural mangroves in the same areas. Mangrove planters were interviewed and plantation and natural mangrove forests were surveyed to measure forest structure, composition and regeneration. Compared with natural forests, mangrove plantations were characterized by high densities of small stems, shorter and narrower canopies, and fewer species. For both economic and ecological reasons, the vast majority of people dispersed and planted only Rhizophora mucronata/stylosa and, furthermore, they often thinned other species out of planted areas. There was remarkably little subsequent recruitment of other, nonplanted mangrove species into plantations up to 50 and 60 years of age. This pattern held across a diversity of sites, including plantations that had not been selectively cut or weeded. Important ecological and economic benefits result from local mangrove planting, but catalyzing diverse forest regeneration—at least in the short to medium term—is not one of them. The lesson: if you want to restore diverse mangrove forests, you have to plant diverse mangrove forests.  相似文献

The last 7000 years of environmental history for Paoay Lake and its surrounding landscape is examined through the analysis of pollen, diatoms, charcoal, mineral magnetics and AMS dating. Basal sediments contain shells of Cerithiidae and the saline‐tolerant diatom Diploneis indicating that this was an estuarine environment before becoming a freshwater lake after 6000 bp . Pollen analysis shows that submontane forests, characterized by Pinus pollen, underwent a major disturbance around 5000 years ago, recovering to previous levels by 1000 years ago. Charcoal as an indicator of fire is abundant throughout record, although the highest levels occur in the earlier part of the record, between 6500 and 5000 years ago. An aspect of the project was to examine whether there is evidence of land clearance and agricultural development in the region during the late Holocene. While a clear signal of human impact in the record remains equivocal, there appears to be a correspondence between submontane forest decline and mid‐Holocene ocean data that depict warmer and possibly drier conditions for the region. The study highlights the vulnerability of these montane forests to forecasts of a warmer and drier climate in the near future.  相似文献

The worldwide degradation of reef ecosystems has promoted the advocators of restoration acts to the foreground. Here, we describe the results of the first step of large-scale restoration based on the “gardening with corals” concept. During June-September 2005, two coral nurseries were established in Bolinao, the Philippines, in front of Silaqui Island, in a shallow (2 m depth) sandy lagoon. Two types of nurseries were employed: (1) suspended nursery; (2) leg-fixed nursery. The nursery held a total number of 6824 ramets, from seven coral species representing different growth forms (branching, leaf-like and sub-massive forms) and different growth rates (fast and slow growing species). Each species was represented by several genotypes. During one year, we analyzed and compared survivorship, bleaching and growth rates of fragments between the different nurseries, species and genotypes. Survivorship, which was high in both nurseries, > 85%, fluctuated between the different species indicating that different species require different rearing methodologies. Mortality and detachment was subjected to environmental conditions, especially affected by the typhoons prevailing in this part of the world. The one-year nursery phase produced sizeable colonies, especially of branching forms, suitable for transplantation.  相似文献

Ant communities were surveyed along an elevational gradient in the Philippines extending from lowland dipterocarp forest (250 m elevation) to mossy forest (1750 m). Standardized pitfall trapping in arboreal and terrestrial microhabitats at seven sites yielded 51 species. Collecting by hand at five of the sites yielded 48 species. The two methods produced substantially different assemblages, with only 22 species (29%) taken in common. Only a fraction of the total ant community appeared to be sampled at most of the sites. Measures of species richness and relative abundance peaked at mid-elevations and declined sharply with increasing elevation. Ants were extremely rare above 1500 m elevation. Arboreal ants were trapped much less frequently than terrestrial ants at all sites. Ant species that were abundant had broader elevational distributions than those that were less common, but most species were rare and occurred at only one or two sites. The elevational patterns for ants are largely the inverse of those documented for Philippine small mammals which reach their greatest diversity and abundance at high elevations where ants are rare. This suggests that the two groups may interact competitively. Some of the patterns observed or inferred from this study may apply to tropical ant communities in general, and are presented as series of testable hypotheses as a guide and stimulus for future research.  相似文献

Although basally positioned inferior spikelets of rice panicles emerge late from the flag leaf enclosure (boot), they mature early which precludes adequate grain filling. It is assumed that extended exposure to ethylene inside the boot restricts assimilate partitioning to the endosperm in basal spikelets by affecting the functions of seed coat. In the present study, ethylene concentration inside the boot was measured in two high yielding rice cultivars differing in percentage of spikelet sterility. To manipulate the concentration/action of ethylene, silver nitrate, aminoethoxyvinyl glycine and 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid were injected into the boot. The effect of these chemicals on the concentration of photosynthetic pigments, lipid peroxidation and peroxidase activity of the seed coat and lemma and palea were measured to monitor development. Ethylene reduced development during the juvenile phase but accelerated degradation of the photosynthetic tissues of the spikelets in the senescent phase. Boot ethylene correlated positively with number of barren spikelets in the panicle and negatively with concentration of photosynthetic pigments of the seed coat of inferior spikelets. The concentration of ethylene was higher in the high sterile cultivar Mahalaxmi than that of the low sterile Mahanadi. Inhibition of ethylene action or synthesis improved grain filling. The chemicals were most effective on the inferior spikelets. It was concluded that ethylene retarded seed coat development during the prestorage phase and reduced grain filling of basal spikelets.  相似文献

Thirty four samples of rice bran, of which 9 were from raw (untreated) rice (RR) and 25 from parboiled rice (PbR) were collected from commercial rice mills in and around Madras and analysed for storage mycoflora and mycotoxins. Fungi of the Aspergillus flavus group were present in 29 of the 34 samples (8 from RR and 21 from PbR) in quantities ranging from <1–432 thousand propagules/g, though not always as the dominant mycoflora. Fungal numbers were usually higher in RR than in PbR samples.Five of the 9 RR samples and 6 of the 25 PbR samples were positive for aflatoxins. Among 29 isolates of A. flavus obtained from the bran samples, 16 isolates –6 from RR bran and 10 from PbR bran — were found to be toxigenic in vitro. Some isolates of A. candidus also seemed to produce aflatoxin and other fluorescent substances.  相似文献

The esp1 mutant CM21 specifically exhibits reduced levels of cysteine-poor (CysP) prolamin bands with pIs of 6.65, 6.95, 7.10, and 7.35 in rice seed. Matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis demonstrated that the bands with pIs 6.65, 6.95, and 7.35 are encoded by different structural genes. These results suggest that the Esp1 locus encodes a regulatory factor involved in the synthesis and/or accumulation of CysP prolamin molecules. Isoelectric focusing (IEF) analysis of CysP prolamins in chromosome substitution lines showed that structural genes for bands with pI values of 6.95, 7.10, and 7.35, which are reduced in esp1 mutant lines, are located as a gene cluster in the 44.2 cM region on chromosome 5.  相似文献

We carried out a small-scale survey to investigate the status of intestinal protozoa and helminthes infection of inhabitants in Roxas city, Mindoro, the Philippines. Total 301 stool samples were subjected to the formalin-ether concentration method for the detection of helminth ova and protozoan cysts. The overall positive rate was 64.5%, and that of male and female were 56.6% and 72.5%, respectively. The highest infected helminth was Ascaris lumbricoudes (51.2%), followed by Trichuris trichiura (27.6%), hookworm (8.0%) and Enterobius vermicularis (0.3%). The protozoa infection status revealed that Entamoeba coli was the most frequent (15.0%). Iodoamoeba buetschlii and E. histolytica were found but few. The multiple infection more than two parasites was 29.6%, and double infection with A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura was most common. The intestinal helminth infections were highly prevalent in this area, according to this result, and we concluded that anthelminthic drugs should be given to inhabitants, especially to children of 1 to 15 years-old.  相似文献

目的了解临床酵母样真菌的感染类型、分布以及耐药情况,为临床诊断治疗提供合理的用药依据.方法采用常规方法进行真菌培养,用科玛嘉显色培养基联合法国生物梅里埃API 20C AUX鉴定条进行鉴定,药敏试验采用微量稀释法.结果864株酵母样真菌中,白色念珠菌619株(71.6%),其次为热带念珠菌116株(13.4%)和克柔念珠菌47株(5.4%),非白色念珠菌感染的比例逐年上升(21.5%).其中,呼吸道标本酵母样真菌检出率最高,达79.7%,其次是消化道为8.8%,泌尿道为4.7%.科室分布依次为干部科、呼吸科、急诊内科、血液科等;白色念珠菌对两性霉素B、5-氟胞嘧啶高度敏感,达90%以上,对氟康唑和伊曲康唑的敏感性有所降低.结论酵母样真菌的检出率与患者基础疾病密切相关;对氟康唑等药物的敏感性有下降的趋势,未发现对4种药物同时耐药的菌株,提示在治疗中,药敏监测是非常必要的.  相似文献

Summary The restriction of sexual pairing by a specificity gene is considered to be an ancient development in the plant kingdom. The diversity and general parallelism of incompatibility systems seen amongst the phyla at the present time can be rationalized in terms of the association of various derived forms of the ancestral specificity unit with differing spectra of accessory factors controlling sexual physiology in the different phyla. Sexual morphogenesis has become divided into distinct phases under the control of complementary genes. These phases are initiated by a regulatory system of Co-ordinator genes which control the order in which groups of morphogenetic genes are expressed during development. The entire sexual cycle will be completed only if all the complementary groups are activated in the appropriate sequence. The present article discusses essential features of the evolution of the breeding locus in different phyla. These features are consistent in themselves with the present data and are not dependent on the proposed ancient origin of the specificity gene.The above hypothesis throws light on the (1) evolution of the complex mating loci in flowering plants and fungi; (2) evolution of complementary incompatibility and heteromorphic incompatibility in flowering plants; (3) anomalous cross-compatibility behaviour of mutants in the fungus Schizophyllum commune; (4) nature of homothallism in higher fungi; (5) mode of origin of new functional self-incompatibility alleles; and (6) homogenic and heterogenic incompatibility.  相似文献

Summary This review describes nickel toxicity and nickel resistance mechanisms in fungi. Nickel toxicity in fungi is influenced by environmental factors such as pH, temperature and the existence of organic matter and other ions. We describe resistance mechanisms in nickel-resistant mutants of yeasts and filamentous fungi which were obtained by exposure to a mutagen or by successive culture in media containing increasing concentrations of nickel ion. Nickel resistance may involve: (1) inactivation of nickel toxicity by the production of extracellular nickel-chelating substances such as glutathione; (2) reduced nickel accumulation, probably by modification of a magnesium transport system; (3) sequestration of nickel into a vacuole associated with free histidine and involving Ni-insensitivity of vacuolar membrane H+-ATPase.  相似文献
