In angiosperms, ovules are "packaged" within individual flowers, and an optimal strategy should occur depending on pollination and resource conditions. In animal-pollinated species, wide variation in ovule number per flower occurs, and this contrasts with wind-pollinated plants, where most species possess uniovulate flowers. This pattern is usually explained as an adaptive response to low pollen receipt in wind-pollinated species. Here, we develop a phenotypic model for the evolution of ovule number per flower that incorporates the aerodynamics of pollen capture and a fixed resource pool for provisioning of flowers, ovules, and seeds. Our results challenge the prevailing explanation for the association between uniovulate flowers and wind pollination. We demonstrate that when flowers are small and inexpensive, as they are in wind-pollinated species, ovule number should be minimized and lower than the average number of pollen tubes per style, even under stochastic pollination and fertilization regimes. The model predicts that plants benefit from producing many small inexpensive flowers, even though some flowers capture too few pollen grains to fertilize their ovules. Wind-pollinated plants with numerous flowers distributed throughout the inflorescence, each with a single ovule or a few ovules, sample more of the airstream, and this should maximize pollen capture and seed production.  相似文献

Observation of ovulate cones at the time of pollination in the southern coniferous family Podocarpaceae demonstrates a distinctive method of pollen capture, involving an extended pollination drop. Ovules in all genera of the family are orthotropous and single within the axil of each fertile bract. In Microstrobus and Phyllocladus ovules are erect (i.e., the micropyle directed away from the cone axis) and are not associated with an ovule-supporting structure (epimatium). Pollen in these two genera must land directly on the pollination drop in the way usual for gymnosperms, as observed in Phyllocladus. In all other genera, the ovule is inverted (i.e., the micropyle is directed toward the cone axis) and supported by a specialized ovule-supporting structure (epimatium). In Saxegothaea there is no pollination drop and gametes are delivered to the ovule by pollen tube growth. Pollination drops were observed in seven of the remaining genera. In these genera the drop extends over the adjacent bract surface or cone axis and can retain pollen that has arrived prior to drop secretion (“pollen scavenging”). The pollen floats upward into the micropylar cavity. The configuration of the cone in other genera in which a pollination drop has not yet been observed directly suggests that pollen scavenging is general within the family and may increase pollination efficiency by extending pollination in space and time. Increased pollination efficiency may relate to the reduction of ovule number in each cone, often to one in many genera, a derived condition. A biological perspective suggests that animal dispersal of large seeds may be the ultimate adaptive driving force that has generated the need for greater pollination efficiency.

Empirically determined patterns of pollen impaction on the surfaces of pine ovulate cones are correlated with regions of nonlaminar flow created by the spatial arrangement and morphology (aspect ratios) of scale-bract complexes. Results from the serial discharge of pollen, upwind of ovulate cones, indicate that ovules on ovulate cones are preferentially impacted by pollen from their own species. Analyses indicate that while aerodynamic factors dominate the entrapment of pollen by ovulate cones, other factors such as pollen impaction-rebound and rebound-reentrainment are significant. Surface characteristics in addition to the settling velocities of pollen may play important roles in determining pollination efficiency. Wind tunnel analyses of the aerodynamic effects of scale-bract arrangement and aspect ratios indicate that each complex behaves as an aerofoil, deflecting air eddies toward the micropylar ends of ovules. The ovulate cone geometry, as a whole, deflects unidirectional wind into cyclonic vortices around the cone axis, each scale-bract deflecting nonimpacted pollen along orthostichies and parastichies. The morphology of the typical conifer ovulate cone is interpreted as a structure that optimizes anemophilous reproduction.  相似文献

Seed cone in Platycladus orientalis (L.) France consists of four or five pairs of decussate bracts. Usually, two pairs of the fertile bracts in the middle of the cone subtend six ovules, which initiate in an acropetal manner. Only one ovule presents on each of the upper fertile bract, while two ovules initiate from a common primordium in the axil of lower bracts. In Beijing, most female cones initiated in July. All parts of the cone formed before dormancy, which occurred during November to the next January. After pollination in March, bract morphology changed dramatically; intercalary growth of the bract base formed a conspicuous protuberance, in which inverted vascular system developed. Furthermore, ovules on different pairs of bracts initiated in an acropetal manner and two ovules in each lower fertile bract initiated from a common primordium, which was different from the basipetal initiation of ovules and independently formed single ovule as reported by Takaso in Calltris.  相似文献

Macrozamia communis is a common cycad that occurs in eastern New South Wales, Australia, where it forms an understory in various forest or woodland communities. Leaf number of reproductive individuals as well as of nonreproductive ones, taken as an indication of size class, varies clinally from north to south, with reproductive individuals in southern populations having mean leaf numbers about 12 times greater than those at the northern end of the range of this species. Female cone size and mature ovule weight appear to vary also along this gradient. Using leaf number as a predictor of sexual maturity, from 37 to 100% of the individuals present in a population were judged to be mature. The percent of mature individuals participating in the 1987 coning episode ranged from none in three southern populations to 68% elsewhere. In 9 of 10 samples more males than females participated in the 1987 coning episode, with a collective sex ratio slightly male biased for all populations sampled. In three population samples average cone numbers for male and female plants were equal. In two samples males produced more cones per plant than females. Leaf numbers of males and females in individual populations were equal. Few individuals producing cones in 1987 showed evidence of recent prior cone production, suggesting that successive cone production by both sexes is separated by an interval of several years. The periodicity with which fire is used as a fire suppression method may affect the frequency of cone production in some populations, perhaps preventing it entirely. The apparent absence of recruitment in some populations may result from long-term seed collection by humans for horticultural purposes as well as the very poor seed dispersal that appears to characterize this cycad throughout its range. The weevil Tranes internatus was observed occupying the internal tissues of female cones; this insect may be involved in the pollination of M. communis.  相似文献

Pollinator syndrome is one of the most important determinants regulating pollen dispersal in tropical tree species. It has been widely accepted that the reproduction of tropical forest species, especially dipterocarps that rely on insects with weak flight for their pollination, is positively density-dependent. However differences in pollinator syndrome should affect pollen dispersal patterns and, consequently, influence genetic diversity via the mating process. We examined the pollen dispersal pattern and mating system of Shorea maxwelliana, the flowers of which are larger than those of Shorea species belonging to section Mutica which are thought to be pollinated by thrips (weak flyers). A Bayesian mating model based on the paternity of seeds collected from mother trees during sporadic and mass flowering events revealed that the estimated pollen dispersal kernel and average pollen dispersal distance were similar for both flowering events. This evidence suggests that the putative pollinators – small beetles and weevils – effectively contribute to pollen dispersal and help to maintain a high outcrossing rate even during sporadic flowering events. However, the reduction in pollen donors during a sporadic event results in a reduction in effective pollen donors, which should lead to lower genetic diversity in the next generation derived from seeds produced during such an event. Although sporadic flowering has been considered less effective for outcrossing in Shorea species that depend on thrips for their pollination, effective pollen dispersal by the small beetles and weevils ensures outcrossing during periods of low flowering tree density, as occurs in a sporadic flowering event.  相似文献

Observations and experiments were carried out over 5 yr to distinguish between wind and insect pollination in the cycad Encephalartos villosus Lemaire (Zamiaceae). They were also designed to determine whether a pollination mutualism exists between E. villosus and Antliarhinus zamiae (Thunberg) (Coleoptera: Brentidae), an obligate ovule parasite that routinely parasitizes a large proportion of the ovules. The percentage of fertilized ovules dropped slightly when wind was excluded from the megastrobilus. However, when insects were excluded by either net bags or insecticide there was a substantial decrease in the proportion of fertilized ovules. Five beetle species belonging to four families were found on the strobili at the time of pollination. Using data on the effectiveness of pollen transfer to the receptive ovule, as well as data on abundance and pollen loads, a pollinator importance value (PIV) was determined for each beetle species and a pollinator importance index (PII) was determined for each population. PII values showed that an undescribed weevil (Porthetes sp., Curculionidae) was consistently the most important pollinator. A. zamiae and an undescribed beetle species within the Xenoscelinae (Languriidae) played a minor role in pollination, and their contributions varied from year to year and between populations. Two additional beetle species, Metacucujus goodei Endrödy-Younga (Boganiidae) and a second species of Xenoscelinae, had very low PII values and probably had little or no effect on pollination. Low PIV scores for A. zamiae were a result of its low numbers on the microstrobilus and the tendency of the beetles to remain on the outside of the megastrobilus. In the interaction between E. villosus and A. zamiae, the cycad does not appear to benefit significantly from a pollination service and I interpret this to mean that the relationship is antagonistic rather than mutualistic. There is, however, a possible mutualism between Porthetes sp. and E. villosus.  相似文献

Cone traits (volatile components and thermogenesis) of three cycad species in the genus Macrozamia were examined for differences related to their specific insect pollinators, the weevil, Tranes spp., or the thrips, Cycadothrips chadwicki. Linalool (>80% of emissions) dominated cone volatile components of M. machinii (Tranes-pollinated) and beta-myrcene was a minor component (<9% of emissions). Volatiles of M. lucida and M. macleayi cones (Cycadothrips-pollinated) were dominated by beta-myrcene (up to 97% of emissions), but no linalool was detected. Pollinator movement into and out of cones coincided with cone thermogenesis and peak odor emission: around sunset for Tranes, and at mid-day for Cycadothrips. Female cone traits were similar to those of their conspecific male cones. Differences in cone traits between Macrozamia species may thus be responsible for conferring pollinator specificity in areas of sympatry.  相似文献

To understand the detailed mechanisms underlying variations in seed productivity per cone, it is important to examine simultaneously the effects of two pollination mode components (pollen supply and quality) on two seed production processes (seed formation and maturation). We conducted artificial pollination experiments with four pollination treatments (selfing, polycross, no-pollination and open-pollination treatments) in each of two vertical crown layers (upper and lower) for 19 Pinus densiflora ramets. We measured formed seeds as a proportion of ovules (P(Form)), and filled seeds as a proportion of formed seeds (P(Fill)) per cone in each treatment and layer, and inferred the relative influences of pollination mode and resource availability on seed productivity. In the no-pollination treatment, no seeds were formed in any cones of all five ramets. The Generalized Linear Model showed that there were no significant differences in P(Form) both between selfing and polycross treatments and upper and lower layers. The mean P(Fill) values in the selfing treatment were significantly lower than those in the polycross treatment in both layers. The mean P(Fill)s of the two layers did not differ significantly in the selfing treatment, but did in the open-pollination and polycross treatments. The results show that pollen supply affects mainly seed formation, whereas pollen quality affects mainly seed maturation. Resource availability also affects mainly seed maturation, if pollen quality is higher than a certain threshold.  相似文献

The pine cone weevil, Pissodes validirostris Gyll. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), attacks seed cones of most Eurasian pine species, except these of Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra L.). Behavioural responses of adult weevils to cone volatile emissions of Swiss stone pine and to those of a common host, mountain pine (Pinus uncinata Ram.), were compared in an olfactometer. Weevils were significantly attracted by the volatile blend emitted by mountain pine, but Swiss stone pine volatiles elicited an inverse response, with most weevils moving in the opposite direction to the odour source. However, the majority of second instar weevil larvae that were extracted from mountain pine cones and transferred into Swiss stone pine cones were capable of developing to the adult stage. This suggests that Swiss stone pine cones do not contain strong feeding deterrents that could prevent larval development. The possible factors involved in the absence of colonization of Swiss stone pine cones by cone weevils are discussed.  相似文献

The modular morphology of plants has important consequences for reproductive strategies. Ovules are packaged in discrete structures (flowers) that usually vary stochastically in pollen capture and ovule fertilization, because of the vagaries of pollen transfer by external agents. Different ovule packaging schemes may use limited reproductive resources more or less effectively, so that some number of ovules per flower may be optimal, given the prevailing probabilities of ovule fertilization. I derive a phenotypic model for ovule number per flower that maximizes the expected total ovule fertilizations on a plant when pollination and fertilization vary randomly among individual flowers. This model predicts that, except for small or inexpensive flowers, ovules should be “oversupplied” relative to the mean receipt of pollen tubes, so that pollen limitation of seed set should be common. Published data are congruent with this prediction. Additional hypotheses on the relation of ovule packaging to floral cost, plant size, and variance in pollen receipt are suggested by the model, but few data exist to evaluate these hypotheses.  相似文献

Seed cones in Taxodium distichum and Glyptostrobus pensilis occupy the position of permanent shoots and are initiated in the summer preceding spring pollination. Morphological features are similar in the two genera, reflecting their close taxonomic relationship. Ovule complexes originate as two (rarely more) ovule primordia in the axil of each fertile bract but without any indication of a preceding discrete ovuliferous scale. When the nucellus, integument, and micropyle are well developed, a series of up to ll abaxial lobes forms at the base of each ovule pair. They become fused by basal growth. After pollination the common basal meristem of lobes and bract extends by intercalary growth to form the conspicuous “ovuliferous scale” of the mature cone; the lobes enlarge and exceed the ovules. Despite the topographic similarity in the cones of both genera, there are differences in vasculature such that the vascular traces to the axillary complex originate directly from the axial cylinder in Glyptostrobus but from the bract trace in Taxodium. The complex vasculature of the mature cone develops late and primarily as an expression of intercalary growth.  相似文献

In angiosperms, initiation of ovule enlargement represents the start of seed development, the molecular mechanism of which is not yet elucidated. It was previously reported that pollen tube contents, rather than double fertilization, can trigger ovule enlargement. However, it remains unclear whether the signal(s) to trigger the initiation of ovule enlargement are from the sperm cells or from the pollen tubes.Recently, we identified a mutant drop1- drop2-, which produces pollen tubes with no sperm cells. Taking advantage of this special genetic material, we conducted pollination assays, and found that the ovules pollinated with drop1- drop2- pollen could initiate the enlargement and exhibited significant enlarged sizes at 36 h after pollination in comparison with those unpollinated ovules. However, the sizes of the ovules pollinated with drop1- drop2- pollen are significantly smaller than those of the ovules pollinated with wildtype pollen. These results demonstrate that the pollen tube, rather than the sperm cells, release the signal to trigger the initiation of ovule enlargement, and that double fertilization is required for further enlargement of the seeds.  相似文献

Comparisons are presented between the three-dimensional airflow patterns created around and by a scale model of a conifer ovulate cone and the trajectories of windborne pollen grains around Picea, Larix, and Pinus ovulate cones. Three general components of the airflow pattern around an ovulate cone model are 1) doldrum-like eddies, rotating over the adaxial surfaces of cone scales and directed toward attached ovules, 2) airflow spiralling around the cone axis along cone scale orthostichies and parastichies, and 3) a complex pattern of vortices (“umbilicus”) directed toward the leeward surface of the ovulate cone. The observed trajectories of pollen grains around cones of Picea, Larix, and Pinus conform to two of these three airflow components: 1) pollen grains are seen to roll along cone scales toward the distal scale margin and to become reentrained in airflow directed backward toward attached ovules, and 2) pollen grains passing around the cone are deflected into the “umbilicus” airflow pattern, where they either settle on or impact with cone scales (approach trajectories), or where they approach the leeward cone surface but are deflected away by airflow passing under the cone (Z-shaped trajectories). Vectoral analyses of pollen grain motion reveal a complex pattern of trajectories influenced by boundary layer conditions defined by ovulate cone geometry and ambient airflow speed. Wind tunnel studies of ovulate cones subtended by leaves and stem indicate that leaves circumscribing the cone act as a snowfence, deflecting windborne pollen toward the cone. Vectoral analyses of airflow patterns and pollen grain trajectories close to ovulate cones indicate that wind pollination in conifers is a non-stochastic aerodynamic process influenced by cone-leaf morphology and the behavior of pollen grains as windborne particles.  相似文献

All confirmed records of entomophilic pollination in cycads are for species in the Zamiaceae. This paper presents details of entomophily in both species of Bowenia in the Stangeriaceae. Seed set in female cones from which wind and water‐borne pollen, but not insects, was excluded, indicates that pollination is obligately entomophilous. The pollination vectors are Miltotranes weevils and the relationships are species‐specific and possibly coevolutionary.  相似文献

Ovule number per flower in a world of unpredictable pollination   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The number of ovules per flower varies over several orders of magnitude among angiosperms. Here we consider evidence that stochastic uncertainty in pollen receipt and ovule fertilization has been a selective factor in the evolution of ovule number per flower. We hypothesize that stochastic variation in floral mating success creates an advantage to producing many ovules per flower because a plant will often gain more fitness from occasional abundant seed production in randomly successful flowers than it loses in resource commitment to less successful flowers. Greater statistical dispersion in pollination and fertilization among flowers increases the frequency of windfall success, which should increase the strength of selection for greater ovule number per flower. We therefore looked for evidence of a positive relationship between ovule number per flower and the statistical dispersion of pollen receipt or seed number per flower in a comparative analysis involving 187 angiosperm species. We found strong evidence of such a relationship. Our results support the hypothesis that unpredictable variation in mating success at the floral level has been a factor in the evolution of ovule packaging in angiosperms.  相似文献

Controlled self- and cross-pollinations were conducted on flowers of five mature Eucalyptus nitens trees. Levels of self-sterility of the trees ranged from 25.8 to 93.6%. Pollen tube numbers in styles and ovule penetration by pollen tubes was investigated 2 weeks after pollination by fluorescence microscopy. There were no significant differences between treatments in the number of pollen tubes present in styles or in the percentage of ovules penetrated by pollen tubes. Embryology of material harvested 2 and 4 weeks after pollination was investigated by bright-field microscopy. Fertilisation had taken place by 2 weeks after pollination with nearly every ovule showing evidence of fertilisation. Cross-pollination resulted in a greater proportion of healthy, developing ovules, at both 2 and 4 weeks after pollination, compared with self-pollination. The proportion of degenerating ovules increased from 2 to 4 weeks after pollination. The reduced ability of E. nitens to set self-pollinated seed compared with cross-pollinated seed appears to be controlled by a post-zygotic mechanism. Differences in ovule size may potentially assist in the identification of trees incapable of setting self-pollinated seed.  相似文献

Among plants visited by many pollinator species, the relative contribution of each pollinator to plant reproduction is determined by variation in both pollinator and plant traits. Here we evaluate how pollinator movement among plants, apparent pollen carryover, ovule number, resource limitation of seed set, and pollen output affect variation in contribution of individual pollinator species to seed set in Lithophragma parviflorum (Saxifragaceae), a species visited by a broad spectrum of visitors, including beeflies, bees and a moth species. A previous study demonstrated differences among visitor species in their single-visit pollination efficacy but did not evaluate how differences in visitation patterns and pollen carryover affect pollinator efficacy. Incorporation of differential visitation patterns and pollen carryover effects —commonly cited as potentially important in evaluating pollinator guilds — had minor effects (0–0.6% change) on the estimates of relative contribution based on visit frequency and single-visit efficacy alone. Beeflies visited significantly more flowers per inflorescence than the bees and the moth. Seed set remained virtually constant during the first three visited flowers for beeflies and larger bees, indicating that apparent pollen carryover did not reduce per-visit efficacy of these taxa. In contrast, Greya moth visits showed a decrease in seed set by 55.4% and the smaller bees by 45.4% from first to second flower. The larger carryover effects in smaller bees and Greya were diminished in importance by their small overall contribution to seed set. Three variable plant traits may affect seed set: ovule number, resource limitation on seed maturation, and pollen output. Ovule number per flower declined strongly with later position within inflorescences. Numbers were much higher in first-year greenhouse-grown plants than in field populations, and differences increased during 3 years of study. Mean pollen count by position varied 7-fold among flowers; it paralleled ovule number variation, resulting in a relatively stable pollen:ovule ratio. Resource limitation of seed set increased strongly with later flowering, with seed set in hand-pollinated flowers ranging from 66% in early flowers to 0% in the last two flowers of all plants. Variation in ovule number and resource limitation of seed maturation jointly had a strong effect on the number of seeds per flower. Visitation to early flowers had the potential to cause more seed set than visitation to later flowers. Overall, the most important sources of variation to seed production contribution were differences among pollinators in abundance and absolute efficacy (ovules fertilized on a single visit) and potentially differential phenology among visitor species. These effects are likely to vary among populations and years.  相似文献
