Rainforest fragmentation and creek degradation are major problems on the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland. Lake Barrine and Wooroonooran National Parks are separated by a 1.5‐km length of Toohey's Creek which has been cleared except for small remnant rainforest patches. The creek has been fenced and replanted to create a corridor between the two national parks. The aim of this study was to monitor the success of the corridor in providing habitat for rainforest birds. Avian communities were monitored in the corridor and in adjacent rainforest sites using point counts over the period of reestablishment of a continuous rainforest canopy. In terms of bird community composition, within 3 years of planting, the replanted sites were on a trajectory toward the rainforest sites. Although specialist rainforest species were not yet found in the plantings, after 3 years those species which mainly inhabit rainforest but also utilize edges and riparian strips were found in similar numbers in the plantings and in the small remnant patches along the corridor. Frugivorous species were quite abundant even in the youngest plantings. Thus, replanting of rainforest trees along Toohey's Creek has begun to provide habitat for some rainforest birds. It also shows good potential to act as a corridor to connect the previously isolated patches of rainforest for these species and to develop in habitat complexity as the frugivorous birds bring in rainforest plant species from nearby areas.  相似文献

Ten leaves from each of 13 different tree types from two differentrainforest sites in North Queensland, Australia were examined in order toestablish the fungal diversity developing on these leaves. A total of 57microfungi were identified, most of which were mitosporic fungi. Speciesdiversity in terms of richness and evenness were compared and the Mt Lewis sitewas found to be richer as compared to the Butchers Creek site. Statisticalmeasurements of diversity indices, however, showed that the two forest siteswere of similar diversity. Thirty-six of the fungi identified occurred only onone leaf type, indicating possible host specificities or recurrences. The samplesize, however, is deemed to be insufficient, as a larger sample size may haveresulted in less of the fungi appearing to be host specific. It is recommendedthat future studies should include more leaf samples and less tree types. It isparticularly important that the same leaf species are collected within the samesite and at different sites in order to establish the effects of host on fungalcomposition.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of the foraging ecologies and hence means of partitioning resources amongst the twenty-eight most conspicuous species of birds in lowland tropical rainforest at Lacey's Creek, North Queensland. The height and site of foraging and the type of behaviour used by the species were compared. The height at which species foraged appeared to be more important for separating species than the site of foraging or the behaviour used. There appeared to be a greater proportion of species with generalized foraging behaviour at Lacey's Creek than in bird communities in the neotropics. Frugivorous species had very similar foraging ecologies but there were differences in the species of fruit eaten by some species. There were seasonal shifts in foraging by some species. It is postulated that the relative shortage of terrestrial species at Lacey's Creek compared with highland forest in North Queensland is due to the harsh dry season in the lowlands. The structure of this bird community appeared to be strongly affected by seasonality of climate.  相似文献

Charcoal fragments, some identified as Eucalyptus, with radiocarbon dates spanning the period 27 000–12 000 years bp , were found in a soil profile under moist tropical rainforest in north-eastern Australia. The charcoal indicates that sclerophyll forest occupied a central part of the Windsor Tableland rainforest massif during the late Pleistocene. The widespread presence of identifiable and dateable charcoal under rainforest in north Queensland provides an opportunity to examine the patterns and ecological implications of fluctuations in rainforest distribution in recent history.  相似文献

Abstract This paper demonstrates the changes in structure, floristics and forest floor light regimes across the boundary between open forest and rainforest at Kirrama in northeastern Queensland. Hemispherical photographs of the canopy were used to estimate spatial and temporal variations in potential (clear-sky) direct and diffuse photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD = 400–700 nm) across the boundary. Five vegetation zones were identified across the boundary: (A) open forest, (B) tall open forest, (C) tall open forest with a rainforest under-storey, (D) young rainforest, and (E) mature rainforest. During the summer (September–March) direct PPFD declined semi-exponentially across the boundary, while in the winter (April–August), the decline was more linear. However, the decline in diffuse PPFD across the boundary was linear throughout the year. Mean per cent grass cover was positively correlated and mean per cent shrub cover negatively correlated with annual average total PPFD across the boundary. Mean percentages of diffuse radiation relative to that above the forest (diffuse site factors) ranged from 9.8% in the mature rainforest to 66.4% in the open forest, while mean percentages of direct radiation relative to that above the forest (direct site factors) ranged from 2.9–38.3% at the same sites, respectively. Daily PPFD in the rainforest understorey is probably insufficient for the shade intolerant (pioneer) species which prefer the more open environments on the rainforest margin where light intensities and soil temperatures are higher. Towards the rainforest end of zone C, light conditions appear to be similar to those experienced within small treefall gaps in rainforests. Typically, such light conditions are preferred by shade tolerant (primary) tree species that are unable to grow and reproduce successfully in the adjacent shaded understorey and to compete with the fast growing pioneer tree species in the more open end of zone C.  相似文献

Four 0.125 m2 soil samples, 50 mm deep, from each of eight tropical lowland rainforest sites ranging from primary and secondary forests to degraded Imperata grasslands were exposed to shade-house conditions. Germinations of soil seeds were monitored over 28 weeks in April-October. The viable seed banks in the primary forest (592 m-2) and the secondary forest sites resulting from one cycle of clearing and abandonment (1300–1400 m-2) were composed predominantly of secondary species. The viable seed banks were small in Imperata grassland sites that had been burnt regularly (200–400 m-2) and very large (2000–3000 m-2) in sites that had not been burnt for five years or more. The seed banks of the burnt and unburnt Imperata grassland sites were composed mostly of agricultural weeds whilst seeds of secondary rainforest trees were rare or absent. Similarities between the species composition of soil seed banks and regrowth vegetation types suggest that soil seed composition is important in determining the initial floristic composition following disturbance and that lack of seed of secondary rainforest trees is one factor which restricts re-growth and secondary succession on degraded Imperata grasslands. Species such as Eucalyptus intermedia R. T. Bak., E. pellita F. Muell. and Imperata cylindrica (L.)Beauv. which can establish and deflect the normal rainforest secondary succession were not present in the soil seed bank, and these species appear to rely on fresh seed inputs, lignotubers or rhizomes to colonize and regenerate after disturbance.  相似文献

S ummary . Bacteria were isolated from raw and pasteurized milks produced throughout S. E. Queensland. Milk samples were plated initially on penicillin agar or on milk agar and incubated at 30° and 7°, respectively. On the basis of primary characterization, 167 of the 330 isolates obtained were identified as Pseudomonas spp. The pseudomonads were further characterized in accordance with the taxonomic studies of the genus by Stanier, Palleroni & Doudoroff (1966). Species designations were ascribed to the Pseudomonas isolates on the basis of distinctive species characteristics in conjunction with similarity coefficients between each isolate and the ideal species phenotype, as follows: Ps. fluorescens (121), Ps. aeruginosa (16), Ps. putida (12), Ps. maltophilia (9), Ps. pseudoalcaligenes (5), Ps. cepacia (3) and Ps. alcaligenes (1). A dendrogram obtained by cluster analysis of the Pseudomonas isolates is included.  相似文献

The size and species composition of the soil seed-bank in a remnant patch of each of three structurally and floristically distinct rainforests (Complex Mesophyll Vine Forest, Complex Notophyll Vine Forest and Semi-Evergreen Vine Thicket) were assessed. Seeds of 94 species germinated from 12 surface soil samples collected from each site. All three seed-banks were composed mostly of herbs characteristic of roadsides and agricultural land, and pioneer rainforest trees and shrubs. Agglomerative classifications indicated that the seed-bank samples from each rainforest remnant had a characteristic species composition and could be distinguished reliably from seed-bank samples drawn from other sites. Seeds of species present in the standing forest were poorly represented in the seed-banks except for one long-lived pioneer tree, Dendrocnide photinophylla, at one site. The seed-bank from the seasonally dry vine thicket was significantly larger (4000 seeds m-2) than those from the two moister sites (400–600 seeds m-2, contained more seeds of roadside and agricultural herbs, and fewer seeds of rainforest pioneer and secondary shrubs and trees. We suggest three explanations for the different seed-bank structure observed in the seasonally dry forest site. First, with increased deciduousness in rainforests, seed-banks are increasingly subject to invasion and domination by seeds of rapidly maturing herbs. Second, long-lived seeds that germinate in canopy gaps would be less likely to accumulate under deciduous forests because they would he exposed annually to conditions suitable for germination. Third, chronic disturbance by cattle and pigs produces sites suitable for the establishment of rapidly maturing herbs, and possibly disperses their seeds into the forest.  相似文献

Summary Seedlings of six species of rainforest trees with widely constrasting ecology and seed morphology were transplanted at 3 weeks of age into tree-fall gaps and the shaded understoreys at two rainforest sites (Curtain Fig and Lamins Hill) on the Atherton Tableland, North Queensland, Australia. In each forest habitat, half of the transplanted seedlings were protected from vertebrates by means of wire cages, and survival was monitored over 16 months. The main objective was to estimate the extent to which independent variables (forest, habitat, protection from vertebrates, and species) contribute to explaining survival differences among the seedlings. Significant differences existed in the mortality among species, whether caged or uncaged. Seedlings unprotected from vertebrates suffered greater mortality (i.e. averaged over all species and forests, mortality > 75%), compared to the caged seedlings (mortality < 40%). Seedling of most species survived better in forest gaps, though the effects varied significantly among the six species. Survival of caged seedlings in Curtain Fig was significantly greater than in Lamins Hill, a pattern attributed to the partial deciduousness of the Curtain Fig forest. Because only few of the uncaged seedlings survived to 16 months, we focussed on the caged seedlings to examine the role of light at the forest habitats on survival. Relationship between seedling mortality and increasing light availability vary significantly among the six species. However across species, seedling mortality decreased linearly as photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) rose from 0.48 to 2.0%, after which an asymptote was reached and further increase in light (up to 8% PAR) did not influence survival significantly. Overall, temporal, species and the various environmental variables and their interactions explained about 60% of the variations in the seedling mortality data, with protection and species differences making the greatest contributions.  相似文献

Cuticles of North Queensland rainforest Proteaceae were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The genera of North Queensland rainforest Proteaceae are mostly endemic and composed of one or few species, with greatest diversity in the granitic uplands of the region. Knowledge of cuticular morphology may be an important tool in determining the true affinities of several undescribed taxa in the region and can be used to explore hypotheses relating to the history of the Proteaceae. Some species exhibit purported xeromorphic features of thick cuticles, sunken stomates and dense trichome cover on the abaxial surface. Grevillea , Banksieae and Stenocarpus are believed to have radiated into open, much less mesic environments. In the former two taxa this can be interpreted in terms of xeromorphic features expressed in their cuticular morphologies, whereas in Stenocarpus amphistomaty in species of open habitats suggests an alternative mode of evolution more related to physiological factors. Several Cainozoic proteaceous macrofossils temporally and spatially far removed from North Queensland possess cuticular morphologies very similar or identical to extant rainforest taxa in the region.  相似文献

It is well known that the recovery of abandoned tropical pastures to secondary rainforest benefits from the arrival of seeds from adjacent rainforest patches. Less is known, however, about how the structural attributes of adjacent rainforest (e.g. tree density, canopy cover and tree height) impact seed rain patterns into abandoned pastures. Between 2011 and 2013, we used seed traps and ground seed surveys to track the richness and abundance of rainforest seeds entering abandoned pastures in Australia's wet tropics. We also tested how seed rain diversity is related to the distance from forest, the proportion of forest cover in the landscape and several structural attributes of adjacent forest patches, specifically average tree height, canopy cover, tree species richness and density. Almost no seeds were captured in elevated pasture seed traps, even near forest remnants. Abundant forest seeds were found in ground surveys but only within 10 m of forest edges. In ground surveys, seeds from wind‐dispersed species were more abundant, but less species rich, than animal‐dispersed species. A survey of pasture seedling recruits suggested that some forest seeds must be dispersing more than 10 m into pasture at very low frequencies, but only a few species are establishing there. Recruits were predominantly animal‐dispersed not wind‐dispersed species. In addition to distance from forest and the proportion of forest within a 100‐ to 200‐m radius of sampling sites, the richness and density of adjacent forest trees were the most important factors for explaining the probability of seed occurrence in abandoned pastures. Results suggest that without some restoration assistance, the recovery of abandoned pastures into secondary rainforest in Australia's tropical rainforests will likely be limited, at least in part, by a very low rate of seed dispersal away from forest edges and by the diversity and density of trees in adjacent remnant forests.  相似文献

Photoactive retinal pigments in haloalkaliphilic bacteria   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Light-induced fast transient absorbance changes were detected by time-resolved spectroscopy in 38 of 51 haloalkaliphilic isolates from alkaline salt lakes in Kenya and the Wadi Natrun in Egypt. They indicate the presence of two retinal pigments, Pf and Ps, which undergo cyclic photoreactions with half-times of 2 ms and 500 ms respectively. Pf absorbs maximally near 580 nm and Ps near 500 nm. The pigments differ in their sensitivity to hydroxylamine and detergent bleaching and the photoreactions of Pf are strongly dependent on chloride concentration. Of the 38 pigment-containing strains, 29 possess both Pf and Ps, 9 possess only Ps. Inhibition of retinal synthesis with nicotine blocks pigment formation and addition of retinal restores it. Hydroxylamine-bleached pigments can be reconstituted with retinal or retinal analogues. Their similarity to the retinal pigments of Halobacterium halobium strongly suggests that they are also rhodopsin-like retinyledene proteins. Pf in all properties tested is almost identical to halorhodopsin, the light-driven chloride pump of H. halobium, and may serve the same function in the haloalkaliphiles. Ps has photocycle kinetics similar to sensory rhodopsin and a far-blue-shifted long-lived photocycle intermediate, but its ground state absorption maximum is near 500 nm instead of 587 nm. We have not found a bacteriorhodopsin-like pigment in the haloalkaliphiles.  相似文献

Nitrogen mineralization and nitrification were measured using in situ incubations for 12 periods of 1 month in a structurally complex rainforest with basaltic soil, and an adjacent structurally simple rainforest with less fertile soil formed on metamorphic rock. The study was undertaken near Lake Eacham on the Atherton Tableland in northeast Queensland. Cumulative nitrogen mineralization for 1 year did not differ between forests. It amounted to 265 ± 13 μg N g-1 oven dry soil at the upper position (0–7.5 cm) and 122 ± 11 μg N g-1 oven dry soil at the lower position (7.5–15 cm; mean ± s.e. for pooled data). Rates were highest during the wet season but were not strongly correlated with moisture content or temperature. Relative nitrification (cumulative nitrate-nitrogen production expressed as a percentage of cumulative nitrogen mineralization) at the upper position was significantly higher in the complex than the simple forest (100% c.f. 88%). At the lower position it amounted to 100% for cumulative data in both forests. Nitrate was the dominant form of inorganic nitrogen in the complex forest but in the simple forest nitrate and ammonium were of similar importance. The association between forest physiognomic structure and nutrient status at Lake Eacham represents a more general pattern in rainforests of northeast Queensland and further study is needed to ascertain whether results from this study apply more generally.  相似文献

How arthropods are distributed within the vertical structure of tropical rainforests is of considerable interest to ecologists. Here, we examine how light trapped beetles are distributed in tropical rainforest in North Queensland, Australia. In January and July 2012, traps were suspended 0 m, 10 m, 20 m and 30 m above the ground in five locations with no more than one trap at any single location on any night. Maximum canopy height at the sites was 35 m. A total of 7299 individuals of 492 morphospecies and 66 families were collected. The species abundance‐based coverage estimator predicted a total species richness of 765. Sample completeness decreases with increasing height from the ground suggesting higher strata were less well sampled. Distance‐based redundancy analysis showed species richness was significantly different between 30 m and all other levels but not between other paired strata. In contrast, both species composition and family composition were significantly distinct for all strata pairs except 10 m with 20 m, and 20 m with 30 m, suggesting that the most distinct strata were 0 m and 30 m. The first two axes of ordination and hierarchical clustering accounted for 46.5% and 17.4% of species composition variation corresponding with season and stratum, respectively. Family level analyses gave similar results to those at the species level. We found stratification of different feeding guilds with herbivores comprising a larger percentage of species in higher strata, whereas saprophages were restricted to the lower strata, reflecting the availability of key resources for these guilds. Fewer species or families were found to be indicators of strata, as measured using IndVal, than for Malaise and flight interception traps (FIT). Dytiscidae and Hydraenidae were abundant but had not been collected using Malaise and FIT. Which species or families are indicators of strata depends on sampling method suggesting multiple sampling methods should be used to establish indicators.  相似文献

Abstract In 2002, fire burnt areas of Mesophyll‐ and Notophyll Vine Forest in the Smithfield Conservation Park near Cairns, Australia. We assessed the ability of rainforest plant species to persist through fire via resprouting. Natural rates of mortality and resprouting in unburnt areas were assessed for all saplings (stems < 2 m) via 13, 2 × 50 m belt transects, and compared to estimates of mortality and resprouting in 26 transects in burnt areas. We also tested the resprouting ability per‐individual stem of each species against all other stems with which it co‐occurred. Totals of 1242 stems (138 species) were sampled in burnt transects and 503 stems (95 species) in unburnt transects (total number of unique species = 169). There was no difference in the number of stems existing prior to the fire in burnt and unburnt areas when expressed on a per‐sample area basis. Resprouting from basal shoots and root suckers was significantly greater in burnt than in unburnt areas, but rates of stem sprouting were not different. In burnt areas 72 species were tested for resprouting ability and most (65/72) resprouted at similar rates. All species analysed contained individuals that resprouted. The resprouting response of five species was significantly lower, and in two species was significantly higher. For these species especially, fire may act as a mechanism altering relative abundances. The fire coincided with an extreme El Niño event. Current predictions indicate El Niño conditions may become increasingly common, suggesting fire events within rainforest could become more frequent. Resprouting as a general phenomenon of rainforest species, and differential resprouting ability between species should therefore be an important consideration in assessing the potential path of vegetation change in rainforests after fire.  相似文献

Irradiance and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) at five sites within a montane tropical rainforest were compared to test for differences among characteristic environments within the same forest type. The five habitats investigated were a large clearing (800 m2). a small gap (150 m2), the lower canopy, and two shaded understorey sites. Daily average irradiance ranged from 32.3 W m-2 in the heavily shaded understorey to over 400 W m-2 in the large clearing. Similarly, daily average PPFD ranged from 10.2 to over 800 μmol m-2 s-1 at corresponding sites, respectively. Daily total irradiation in the understorey, small gap, and lower canopy were 7.9–8.8%, 11.8% and 11.5%, respectively, of irradiation in the large clearing. For daily total PPFD, relative values for the same sites were 1.3–3.8%, 6.0% and 10.3%, respectively. Comparisons of frequency distributions for irradiance showed that the only significant difference was between the large clearing and the four forest sites. Comparisons of frequency distributions for PPFD showed significant differences among all five sites. Median PPFDs were always above the range of known light compensation points for rainforest plants even in the heavily shaded understorey, and usually above the known light saturation levels of canopy members. These results indicate that the reduction in PPFD by cloud cover does not limit the rates of photosynthesis.  相似文献

Abstract The Chilean predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, appeared in Australia in 1978 soon after being introduced into New Zealand as a specialized biological control agent of spider mites. It is known to be naturalized in agricultural habitats in southeast Queensland, Australia, although nothing is known about its distribution in native ecosystems. In order to determine whether P. persimilis is able to invade subtropical rainforest, we placed potted bean plants infested with its preferred prey, the two-spotted mite (Tetranychus urticae C.L. Koch), at 50 m intervals for 200 m on either side of the rainforest-field ecotone at four sites in southeast Queensland. Two, 4 and 6 weeks after placement, five leaves were sampled from each pot and any phytoseiid mites present were identified. The initial experiment took place in the spring and was repeated in summer and in autumn of 1997. At all four sites and in all three seasons P. persimilis rapidly colonized all of the pots in fields. In the rainforest, however, some pots were never colonized and significant populations of the predator developed only in the summer, and then only at the first stations, 50 m into the forest. These results suggest that even when its preferred prey is present, subtropical rainforest is not an appropriate habitat for P. persimilis. In addition, we reviewed extensive collections of phytoseiid mites from native forests and synanthropic habitats in Australia and found P. persimilis records only from fields, glasshouses, gardens, weeds, roadsides and similar disturbed habitats dominated by introduced plants, again suggesting that this biocontrol agent is not a rainforest invader.  相似文献

Abstract Seventy-three per cent of dry rainforest in Forty Mile Scrub National Park and large areas in adjacent savanna woodland have more than 5000 individuals per ha of lantana (Lantana camara L.). Transect studies in dry rainforest and savanna woodland across varying intensities of lantana infestation show a negative correlation between the density of lantana and tree cover in rainforest. The density of pig rooting is very high in areas of the dry rainforest on deep soil that was not heavily infested with lantana. It is suggested that the digging activities of these animals may cause tree death and subsequent increased light penetration, which favours lantana. The species richness of the dry rainforest declines as the density of lantana increases. However, the saplings and seedlings and the soil seed bank of dry rainforest and savanna woodland tree species have comparable densities in heavy and light lantana infestations. The proliferation of lantana results in the build up of heavy fuel loads across the boundary of dry rainforest and savanna woodland. Recent fires have killed the canopy trees in a large area of dry rainforest within the Park. Active management of Forty Mile Scrub National Park is urgent and some initiatives are suggested.  相似文献

We present new and revised data for the phocine distemper virus (PDV) epidemics that resulted in the deaths of more than 23 000 harbour seals Phoca vitulina in 1988 and 30,000 in 2002. On both occasions the epidemics started at the Danish island of Anholt in central Kattegat, and subsequently spread to adjacent colonies in a stepwise fashion. However, this pattern was not maintained throughout the epidemics and new centres of infection appeared far from infected populations on some occasions: in 1988 early positive cases were observed in the Irish Sea, and in 2002 the epidemic appeared in the Dutch Wadden Sea, 6 wk after the initiation of the outbreak at Anholt Island. Since the harbour seal is a rather sedentary species, such 'jumps' in the spread among colonies suggest that another vector species could have been involved. We discussed the role of sympatric species as disease vectors, and suggested that grey seal populations could act as reservoirs for PDV if infection rates in sympatric species are lower than in harbour seals. Alternatively, grey seals could act as subclinical infected carriers of the virus between Arctic and North Sea seal populations. Mixed colonies of grey and harbour seal colonies are found at all locations where the jumps occurred. It seems likely that grey seals, which show long-distance movements, contributed to the spread among regions. The harbour seal populations along the Norwegian coast and in the Baltic escaped both epidemics, which could be due either to genetic differences among harbour seal populations or to immunity. Catastrophic events such as repeated epidemics should be accounted for in future models and management strategies of wildlife populations.  相似文献

Abstract  This paper tests the hypothesis that habitat differences affect the migratory ability of the Chilean predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis , an introduced biological control agent of the spider mite, Tetranychus urticae . It is suggested that habitat resistance accounts for the species' inability to invade rainforests in south-eastern Queensland, Australia. Like its prey, P. persimilis migrates to distant plants on air currents. To test our hypothesis, populations of the Chilean predatory mite were established on potted bean plants in both remnant rainforest and adjacent open fields, and their migration monitored using sticky traps. Overall it was found that prey populations on leaves were similar in both habitats, but those of predators were about 20% lower in rainforest. However, the numbers of both predators and prey caught on sticky traps in rainforest were about 6% and 25%, respectively, of those caught in open fields, indicating a strongly reduced rate of aerial migration in the forest. The number of P. persimilis caught on the sticky traps increased with increasing populations of predators on foliage. Thus, dense vegetation inhibits the movement of air currents and inhibits colonisation by both predators and, to a lesser extent, spider mites. These results suggest that the inhibition of aerial migration is one reason for lower numbers of P. persimilis in forest habitats, both because its own vagility is restricted, and because its prey is less able to disperse.  相似文献
