This paper presents a floristic and vegetation study of the serpentinised territories of the Dominican Republic, corresponding to the Yamasá and Prieta mountains, Dajabón, Puerto Plata and Gaspar Henández. These sites are very important at a local level as they act as speciation centres and have a specific ultramafic flora with a high endemicity rate. The floristic analysis revealed the existence of 219 species, of which 54 (24.7%) are endemic. Twenty-one plots of vegetation distributed in five areas dominated by serpentines have been analysed in this study. The phytosociological approach is based on the Braun-Blanquet method. The study was combined with statistical techniques such as multivariate analyses. The results revealed three different kinds of forests, one dominated by the endemic Bignoniaceae, Tabebuia berterii (CC.) Britton, which is peculiar to the subhumid–humid environments of the Caribbean-Cibensean territory. The second type of forest is dominated by the serpentinophyte Polygonaceae, Leptogonum buchii Urb. which thrives in the humid ombrotype of the north territory. Finally, the third one adopts the form of the pine forest of Dajabón, dominated by Pinus occidentalis Sw. Four associations and three alliances are proposed as new syntaxa based on statistical and phytosociological analyses.  相似文献

Summary Consisting ofPinus massoniana, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Baeckea frutescens andDicranopteris linearis, thePinus scrub community is widespread and representative of the vegetation in Hong Kong. Three areas, with soils derived separately from granite, sedimentary and volcanic rocks but of the same pine community were selected for the present study. Soil samples were collected and analysed for pH, texture, organic carbon, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, and exchangeable K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Al and H. Plant samples were also collected for the analysis of K, Na, Ca, Mg, Mn, Al, Fe and SiO2.While variations in chemical and physical properties exist among the soils of different geology, they are invariably acidic with high exchangeable Al and H ions whereas the base saturation is exceedingly low. Intra- and inter-species variations in chemical composition are equally notable. While K, Mg and Ca are the dominant elements of uptake and accumulation, the fernD. linearis also stands out as a strong accumulator of SiO2, Al and to some extent, Mn and Fe.  相似文献

Summary

Lime Hill is an example of a serpentine outcrop which shows only to a limited extent the features of vegetation often associated with ultrabasic rock. Plant and soil analyses from this site are presented and compared with those from other Scottish serpentines. Substantial quantities of heavy metals are present at Lime Hill. It is suggested that the cause of the absence of serpentine-characteristic plants lies in a relatively low soil Mg : Ca ratio and/or high P and K levels.  相似文献

Summary

Of the five ultrabasic rock outcrops in the Glen Clova district of Scotland two, near Meikle Kilrannoch hill, bear distinctive vegetation and are unusually toxic amongst serpentines. Soil analyses showed a very high Mg:Ca ratio with low calcium and relatively high nickel and chromium levels.

Plant analyses for a range of species have shown some with a high tissue Mg:Ca ratio and others with a much lower excess of magnesium over calcium. Moderately high concentrations of nickel and chromium occur, while there is evidence of high sodium levels in two species of maritime affinity and instances of high aluminium, iron, potassium and zinc concentrations. Comparisons with the Lime Hill serpentine confirm the view that the high soil Mg:Ca ratio is a major chemical cause of their extreme character.  相似文献

Concentrations of major nutrients (C, N, P) and acid soluble metals (Ca, Mg, K, Al, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) were determined in modern (0–1 cm) and pre-acidification (5–10 cm) sediment layers collected from 37 alpine and 3 forest lakes in the Tatra Mountains (Slovakia, Poland) in 1996–1998. Sediment composition reflected catchment characteristics and productivity of lakes. In the sediments of alpine lakes, C and N concentrations decreased and Mg increased with a decreasing proportion of vegetation and soil in the catchment. Decreasing Ca:Mg ratios in sediments along the vegetation gradient was inverse to that in water, and could be associated with different ratios of cations in water leachate from catchments and in solids which enter the lake due to soil erosion. Phosphorus concentrations increased with the proportion of moraine areas, with till soils rich in P. Concentrations of C, N, P, and Ca in sediments positively correlated to their concentrations in water. Sediment concentrations of Al and Al:Ca ratios increased with decreasing sediment and water pH. A negative correlation between water pH and concentrations of organic C in water and sediments indicated the important impact of organic acids on the acid status of the lakes exposed to higher terrestrial export of organic matter. Compared to the pre-acidification period, the modern sediments had significantly higher Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, and K, but lower Mg concentrations. The Zn and Pb enrichment was more evident in oligotrophic alpine lakes than in more productive forest lakes and was independent of lake water or sediment pH. Fe and Mn concentrations in the modern sediments were higher than in ambient soils and bedrock, while those in pre-acidification sediments were similar to contemporary soils and to the rock layer. The enrichment of the modern sediments with Fe and Mn thus probably resulted from both their redox recycling and ecosystem acidification.  相似文献

Background and Aim

Biotic and abiotic factors contribute in shaping the distribution through the soil profile of elements released by mineral weathering; among them, leaching and biocycling dominate in temperate environments. We evaluated if the intensity of leaching and biocycling of nutrients can be modulated by element deficiencies linked to the abundance of serpentine in the soil parent material, i.e. if the most deficient elements are more efficiently retained.

Methods

We selected twelve poorly developed soils from Northern Italian beech stands, with variable amounts of serpentinites in the parent material, and determined total and exchangeable Ca, Mg and K, as well as an index of abundance of serpentine minerals.

Results

The total element content depended on the abundance of serpentines, while only exchangeable Mg was related to the parent material. The vertical trend of Ca and K indicated the role of biocycling in all soils, but the relative availability of Ca (ratio between exchangeable and total content) was much higher in the top horizons of serpentine-rich soils.

Conclusions

The different element availability among soils suggested that the vertical distribution of available elements was linked to the parent material and that losses were limited in serpentine-rich soils, probably because plants take up the deficient elements as soon as they are released from litter and thus limit their leaching in deeper soil horizons.  相似文献

The vascular plant flora of open land on superficial bedrock in southem Sweden (northwards to 59°N) is described and related to soil chemical properties. including soil acidity (pH), exchangeable Al, Ca, Fe, Mn, Mg, and phosphate, as well as to soil solution pH and concentrations of Al, Ca and Mg, and to the contents of soil organic matter, soil depth and bedrock types (sandstone, gneiss, granites, various dark igneous rocks and limestones). About 120 localities with totally 652 sites (4 m2) have been examined. Experimental evidence for the toxicity of acid soils and mineral nutrient deficiency of neutral and alkaline soils is related to field data. Hydrogen and Al ion toxicity in acid soils and low phosphate solubility in neutral - alkaline soils are identified as major factors limiting the field distributions of rock habitat plants. Some species (e.g., Rumex acetosella and Sedum telephium ) were limited by phosphate also in acid soils. The relative importance of H and Al ion concentrations to plant performance under variously acid soil conditions is discussed, and strong evidence is given for a decisive influence of Al ion toxicity on species diversity at pH-KCI > 4.5. The importance of grazing and former land use is considered briefly and the floristic differences between the western and the eastern half of the study area are discussed originating from differences in general distribution patterns of species and soil chemical properties.  相似文献

The southeast corner of the East Anglian Fens supports a large concentration of Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos territories. A total of 382 territories were located in extensive surveys in 1999 and 2000, probably representing over 5% of the English population. Transect counts revealed that the Fenland population is restricted in distribution and is associated with localized thickets of scrub. The highest densities are found on humus‐rich soils, suggesting that soil type, in addition to habitat availability, may have a strong influence on the Nightingale's distribution in this region. This paper provides the first assessment of habitat requirements of the Nightingale in scrub, which now forms a principal habitat for the species in England. Detailed studies of the attributes of over 100 Nightingale territories revealed subtle differences in the vegetation structure of these thickets when compared with paired, unoccupied, but apparently similar thickets. The Nightingale territories tended to have a higher proportion of bare ground or short vegetation in the field layer under the canopy, whereas paired sites were more likely to have low field layer vegetation beneath the canopy. The bare ground within the thickets is a feature of shading beneath very dense foliage cover. Within Nightingale territories, low field layer volume and shrub twig volume at the thicket edges was higher than in unoccupied thickets. The differences detected in vegetation structure suggest that a dense and continuous canopy forming a shell over bare ground but with dense low foliage at thicket edges provides the ideal vegetation structure for Nightingales in scrub habitats. Our study suggests that Nightingales occupy scrub of a very specific structure, and specific stage in vegetation succession. This structure probably provides an optimal combination of foraging habitat, microclimate and cover from predators. It is suggested that humus‐rich soils may be preferred because they may support a particularly rich source of invertebrate food, but this remains to be tested empirically.  相似文献

研究了西南和华南酸性森林土壤中Ali/(Ca+Mg)摩尔比值的分布特征与影响因素,用主成分分析(PCA)和偏最小二乘法(PLS)回归综合评价各种影响因素及其相对重要性. 2000~2002年连续3年的监测结果表明,大多数土壤水中该摩尔比值都小于临界值1.0,说明土壤铝释放还未对植被造成显著伤害.偏最小二乘法(PLS)回归显示,土壤铝饱和度(AlS)是影响A层土壤水中Ali/(Ca+Mg)摩尔比值的首要因素;土壤铝饱和度愈高,土壤水中Ali/(Ca+Mg)摩尔比值愈高.5个流域中,尽管流溪河流域酸沉降量偏低,但由于土壤铝饱和度较高,A层土壤水中Ali/(Ca+Mg)摩尔比值高于其他流域.土壤水中无机铝(Ali)浓度是影响深层(B1、B2、BC层)土壤水中Ali/(Ca+Mg)摩尔比值的主导因素;土壤水中无机铝浓度愈高,Ali/(Ca+Mg)摩尔比值愈高.各流域内摩尔比值沿土壤深度的变化与无机铝浓度的变化基本一致.可以认为,土壤铝饱和度是影响土壤水中Ali/(Ca+Mg)摩尔比值区域性差异的主要因素,土壤水中无机铝浓度是影响Ali/(Ca+Mg)摩尔比值纵向差异的主要因素.  相似文献

Summary A study of the relationships of soils and vegetation was undertaken in the humid tropical region of Lake Izabal, Guatemala, Central America. Soils and associated 10-month-old secondary growth were analyzed for N, P, K, Ca, and Mg. In addition, organic matter, Al and pH were determined in the soil samples and plant biomass for the secondary growth were calculated. The secondary growth biomass averaged 9,710 kg/ha for the 10-month growth period. Total nutrient content of the vegetation increased linearly with the biomass, except for Mg. The antagonism of Mg on K and Ca nutrition was quite significant when Mg exceeded Ca in the soil under shifting cultivation. Pure stands ofHeliconia sp. andGynerium sp. appeared to be more efficient in accumulating P than stands of mixed vegetation. Chemical composition and dry matter production of native vegetation may provide additional information to evaluate soil fertility in the humid tropics.  相似文献

In Europe, many contemporary forests are not continuous, but were established on former agricultural land in territories of deserted villages. We aimed to explore whether medieval settlement activities of only 60 years irreversibly changed soil properties and whether these changes were reflected by contemporary forest vegetation. The research was performed in the deserted village of K?í, which existed from 1357 to ca 1420 AD in a current oak forest on sandy soils in the Czech Republic. We identified four former land-use types (building sites, courtyards, the village square, and gardens), where we analyzed soil properties and plant species composition of the forest understory. Higher concentrations of plant-available P, K, Ca, and Mg as well as the total concentrations of organic C and trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, and Zn) were recorded at former building sites with neutral soils, compared to the other former land-use types with acidic soils. The four-times higher species richness at former building sites compared to the former gardens indicate the strong effect of soil pH and nutrient availability on plant species composition, even on the spatial scale of several square metres. Understanding recent patterns in soil properties and biodiversity in Central European forests requires detailed knowledge of former land use over centuries. Analysis of contemporary soil properties together with analysis of vegetation can help to identify former land-use types in deserted villages.  相似文献

Abstract. In French Guiana, inselbergs in the form of granite outcrops rise abruptly from the surrounding rain forest. They constitute isolated islands of a special type of vegetation restricted to this peculiar substrate. Shrub granitic vegetation, organized in thickets on open exposed rocks of inselbergs, are described using the Braun‐Blanquet method combined with Correspondence Analysis. This phytosociological study revealed only one particular shrub community on each inselberg, including predominantly evergreen and sclerophyllous shrubs, especially microphanerophytes, belonging to the Clusiaceae, Myrtaceae and Bombacaceae. These outcrop communities exhibit species endemic to the Guianas region and also species rare in French Guiana. Affinities with flora of other inselbergs and vegetation types in South America are examined and discussed. Reasons for observed floristic and structural changes in each community are also discussed.  相似文献

Rapid, plant-induced weathering in an aggrading experimental ecosystem   总被引:7,自引:2,他引:5  
To evaluate whether rates of weathering of primary minerals are underestimated in watershed mass-balance studies that fail to include products of weathering accumulating in plants and in developing soil, changes in the calcium and magnesium content of vegetation and soil fractions were measured in large, monitored lysimeters (sandbox ecosystems) at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire. Weathering was evaluated over 4–8 yr in sandboxes planted with red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) and kept mostly free of vegetation (nonvegetated). Three mass-balance equations were used that cumulatively include (a) Ca and Mg in precipitation inputs and drainage outputs, (b) accumulation of Ca and Mg in vegetation, and (c) changes in products of weathering in soils. Soil products were evaluated with an extraction process designed to avoid removing ions from primary minerals. Relative to the input-output equation, the estimated rate of weathering increased 2.4 (Ca) and 1.8 (Mg) times when accumulation of Ca and Mg in pine biomass was accounted for, and 8 (Ca) and 23 (Mg) times when changes in soil products were also included. Weathering estimates that included accumulation in vegetation and soil products were 261 (Ca) and 92 (Mg) kg ha-1 yr-1 in the pine sandbox. These rates were 10 (Ca) and 18 (Mg) times higher than the rates in the nonvegetated sandbox, which were not significantly greater than zero. This study raises the possibility that weathering can play a significant role in the release of nutrients available to plants over short periods. Faster rates like this become extremely important where managers are trying to balance nutrients available to plants from precipitation and weathering release with outputs including harvest removals.  相似文献

Aims

In serpentinitic areas non-endemic plants suffer from the serpentine syndrome, due to high Ni and Mg concentrations, low nutrients and Ca/Mg ratio. We evaluated the environment-soil-vegetation relationships in a xeric inner-alpine area (NW Italy), where the inhibited pedogenesis should enhance parent material influences on vegetation.

Methods

Site conditions, topsoil properties, plant associations and species on and off serpentinite were statistically associated (51 sites).

Results

Serpentine soils had higher Mg and Ni concentrations, but did not differ from non-serpentine ones in nutrient contents. The 15 vegetation clusters often showed substrate specificity. Two components of the Canonical Analysis of Principal Coordinates, respectively related to Mg and to Ni and heat load, identified serpentine vegetation. Random Forests showed that several species were positively correlated with Ni and/or Ca/Mg or Mg, some were negatively associated with high Ni, Mg excess affected only few species. Considering only serpentine sites, nutrients and microclimate were most important.

Conclusions

Ni excess most often precludes the presence of plant species on serpentinite, while an exclusion due to Mg is rarer. Endemic species are mostly adapted to both factors. Nutrient scarcity was not specific of serpentine soils in the considered environment. Considering only serpentine sites, nutrient and microclimatic gradients drove vegetation variability.  相似文献

The relationship between vegetational type and a number of soil chemical factors was examined in secondary successions from fire-maintained eucalypt/grass to climax rainforest communities growing on uniform granitic soil parent material. Canonical variates analysis, which utilized the following variables: pH; loss on ignition; total N, P, K, Ca, and Mg; cation exchange capacity and exchangeable Ca, K, and Mg; and potentially mineralizable N, revealed close overall similarity between surface soils of adjacent types, and significant differences among those of types distant from each other in the successional sequences. Exchangeable Ca, mineralizable N, total N. P, and Mg, and pH all differed significantly among soils of the vegetational types. However, the only identifiable gradients in soil properties that were detected within a successional sequence were in total and mineralizable N, which tended to increase, and pH, which generally tended to decrease with progression towards the climax vegetation. Nitrification was promoted by the presence of Acacia dealbata and apparently inhibited by the presence of Leptospermum lanigerum; it was more rapid in soils beneath late successional vegetation than in those from climax vegetation or early stages of succession, and was inhibited in soil from old (> 200 years) grassland. It was concluded that differences among soils in chemical composition and rates of mineralization of N were due to differences in species composition of the vegetational types that they carried for the time being.  相似文献

Río Tinto (Huelva, Spain) is located in one of the most important mining regions in the world. Its soils are characterized by their extreme acidity and elevated concentrations of heavy metals. Due to these characteristics, the Tinto ecosystem is considered unique and an ideal location to study biological adaptations to this type of habitat. Plant species that present these adaptations might be useful to mining and other metal pollution restoration programs. This study reports the results for the screening of Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb in aerial tissues of 97 plant species from the Tinto basin flora. In addition, plant–soil relationships were analyzed using the biological absorption coefficient (BAC) to detect the main plant adaptations in the Tinto flora. The species selected are representative of the biomass of the main dominant edaphophile and climatophile vegetation communities of the three river sections, forest, and subseral stages. Plant and soil elemental analyses were performed using inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry technique (ICP-MS). The results indicate that in general, Tinto flora shows a pattern of accumulation of the analyzed elements in aerial tissues which agrees with the nutritional requirements of vascular plants (macronutrients > micronutrients > indifferent or toxic elements). Among macronutrients, Ca seems to be an essential element in this habitat. This element accumulates in the aerial plant tissues. Basically, the Río Tinto flora is made of Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, As, and Pb excluders, although some analyzed species of Erica, Quercus, Lavandula, Cistus, Genista, and Cytisus genera can be considered Mn accumulators. The results of this study make up a body of fundamental knowledge of the strategies used by plants to thrive in habitats with high concentrations of toxic heavy metals. This information is vital when it comes to planning a restoration program. Plants must be selected and used according to the requirements, always respecting the characteristics of the territory and facilitating the development of suitable vegetation.  相似文献

Summary A study conducted in pots to evaluate the effect of different Mg/Ca ratios (2, 4, 8 and 16) and electrolyte concentrations (20 and 80 meq/l) at SAR 10 in irrigation water on the nutrient uptake and yield of wheat crop in two soils revealed that the average grain and dry matter yields of wheat decreased significantly with an increase in Mg/Ca ratio in irrigation water, but the magnitude of decrease was greater at higher electrolyte concentration than at lower electrolyte concentration. The concentration of Na in both straw and grain of wheat increased and that of K decreased with an increase in Mg/Ca ratio and electrolyte concentration of irrigation water, which led to higher Na/Ca and Na/K ratios in the plant. Further, the concentration of Ca and Mg both in straw as well as in grain increased with increasing electrolyte concentration of the irrigation water. An increasing proportion of Mg in saline irrigation water resulted in decreased concentration of Ca and increased concentration of Mg in both straw and grain of wheat crop. It was also noticed that the increasing proportion of Mg over Ca in the poor quality irrigation water increased the P content of both straw and grain of wheat crop.  相似文献

对九顶山东坡植物群落野外调查 ,得到种子植物 10 4科 345属 4 85种。通过植物区系成分分析可知 ,该区区系比较复杂 ,15种分布类型在该区均有分布。其区系特征具有明显的温带性质 ,温带成分 2 0 1属 ,占总属的 5 8 2 6 % ,而且以北温带分布 (96属 )为主 ;与热带有一定的亲缘关系 ,热带成分 10 5属 ,占 30 4 3% ;中国特有植物多 ,17属 18种 ;区系起源古老。  相似文献

Summary

The relationship between the Rhum ultrabasic skeletal soils and their debris vegetation was investigated by plant analyses and field and laboratory experiments. Samples of Agrostis vinealis, Arenaria norvegica ssp norvegica, Calluna vulgaris, Festuca vivipara, Plantago maritima and Racomitrium lanuginosum from these soils usually had low concentrations of potassium and calcium, and high concentrations of sodium, magnesium (and high Mg/Ca quotients), iron and nickel. There were instances of very high iron concentrations (up to 22.4mg g?1 in Plantago maritima), very high Mg/Ca quotients (up to 27.8 in Arenaria novegica spp. norvegica) and high nickel concentrations (up to 0.48mg g?1 in Plantago maritima). A nutrient addition experiment which was set up in 1965 on an exposed barren area had in 1982 over twice as many species as originally recorded and a nearly complete plant cover. Shorter-term work has confirmed that nutrient availability limits the ultrabasic vegetation. An experiment on Agrostis vinealis in simulated soil solutions showed that a gabbro (non-ultrabasic) clone had a higher R.G.R. (relative growth rate), even at the higher of two experimental Mg/Ca quotients, than two peridotite (ultrabasic) clones and was moreover not significantly affected by the higher nickel concentration used. It is concluded that the low vegetation cover on the skeletal soils is maintained by low soil nutrients which might interact with the coarsely sandy texture in exacerbating the effects of periodic drought and frost heaving. There is no unequivocal evidence for plant toxicities associated with high magnesium or nickel in the Rhum soils.  相似文献

Aim To determine the soil characteristics of Nothofagus‐dominated rain forests in an ultramafic region (i.e. soils having high concentrations of metals including Mg, Fe and Ni), and whether soil characteristics may explain the location of monodominant rain forest in relation to adjacent mixed rain forest and maquis (shrub‐dominated vegetation). Location New Caledonia. Methods Soil characteristics were compared among six Nothofagus‐dominated rain forests from a range of altitudes and topographic positions. At four of these sites, comparisons were made with soils of adjacent mixed rain forest and maquis. Results Soil characteristics varied among the monodominant Nothofagus forests, largely due to differences between ultramafic soils and soils influenced by non‐ultramafic intrusions. The soils of all vegetation types had low concentrations of nutrients, particularly P, K and Ca (both total and extractable/exchangeable), and high total concentrations of Ni, Fe, Cr and Mn. There were significant differences between the rain forests and adjacent maquis in soil concentrations of several elements (N, P, Ca, Mg and Mn), more so in surface soils than at depth, but much of this pattern may be caused by effects of vegetation on the soil, rather than of soil on the vegetation. However, there were no significant differences in soil concentrations of any mineral elements between Nothofagus forest and adjacent mixed rain forest. Main conclusions We found no evidence for soil mediation of boundaries of Nothofagus rain forest with mixed rain forest, and little evidence for the boundaries of either forest type with maquis. We suggest that the local abrupt boundaries of these monodominant Nothofagus forests are directly related to temporal factors, such as time since the last wildfire and frequency of wildfire, and that disturbance is therefore a major causal factor in the occurrence of these forests.  相似文献
