Osteology and ontogeny of the wrymouths,genus Cryptacanthodes (Cottiformes: Zoarcoidei: Cryptacanthodidae) 下载免费PDF全文
The four species included in the family Cryptacanthodidae are eel‐like, burrowing fishes distributed in the cold‐temperate coastal waters of the North Pacific and the western North Atlantic. This study describes the osteology and aspects of the ontogenetic skeletal development of two species, Cryptacanthodes maculatus from the western North Atlantic and C. aleutensis from the eastern North Pacific. We discuss the relationships of Cryptacanthodidae among other zoarcoid families. The Cryptacanthodidae have been previously included in the Stichaeidae, but removed and classified as a separate family based on the skull, pectoral radial, and cephalic lateral‐line morphology. Our observations (similarities in gill arch and pectoral girdle morphology; specifically, a thin sheet‐like flange of bone from the posterior margin of the supracleithrum) suggest a close relationship to at least some of the members of the family Stichaeidae. The lateral line system in anurans is functional during aquatic stages and therefore could provide characters related to larval morphological variation. However, few studies have addressed its components in an integrated overview, and little is known about its ontogenetic variation. This study describes the postembryonic trajectory of the lateral system in Telmatobius atacamensis up to its metamorphic regression. This includes structure, number, topography, and innervation of neuromasts, to contribute new and complete information about its larval organization and its temporal sequence of regression. The arrangement and innervation of lateral lines in T. atacamensis resembles those described for other Type IV tadpoles. Its distinctive features are the orientation of the neuromast stitches in the lateral lines, the presence of supraotic neuromasts, and the first-described case of asymmetry of the ventral trunk line. The temporal sequence of regression during metamorphosis differs between the lateral lines and the lateral line nerves, which remain myelinated into postmetamorphic stages. This asynchronous pattern between different components of the system has also been described for Pseudis paradoxa, which shares with T. atacamensis a remarkably long larval period. This long larval period and gradual metamorphosis could also be related to the constitutive metamorphic regression of the system, in spite of the aquatic lifestyle of these frogs. 相似文献

Up to the present, the genus Leptostichaeus has been considered as belonging to subfamily Lumpeninae. A series of characters was analyzed for family and subfamily diagnostics within the group Stichaeidae. It was found that, in combination of all examined characters, the genus Leptostichaeus is either similar to Azygopterus or occupies an intermediate position between the latter and other members of the family Stichaeidae. The genus Leptostichaeus is transferred into the group Azygopterinae, which is revalidated as a subfamily within the family Stichaeidae. 相似文献

Synopsis Reproduction and parental care in the cockscomb prickleback, a Pacific coast intertidal fish, were examined using a combination of field and laboratory observations. The sexes were dimorphic, particularly during the breeding season, and males competed with other males for access to females. Males performed lateral and spasm displays. In the wild, the breeding season extended from January to March on cobblestone beaches. Assortative mating was positive with respect to body size. Females exhibited solitary parental care of the eggs. Each female coiled around, guarded and fanned a single egg mass that likely represented her total reproductive effort for the year. The number of eggs in the mass increased linearly with female size (weight or length). Males did not remain after spawning. Aquarium observations revealed that males spawn with more than one female given the opportunity. It is not known whether this occurs in the wild. Incubation to hatching took 29 days. Upon hatching, the young swam towards the surface. Parental care did not extend beyond hatching. 相似文献

We investigated the filter properties of the highly branched trunk lateral lines of the stichaeid Xiphister atropurpureus and compared them to the filter properties of simple lateral line canals. For this purpose artificial canals were constructed, some of which were fitted with artificial neuromasts. In still water, the response of a simple canal versus two types of Xiphister-like canals to a vibrating sphere stimulus were similar, as was the decrease in the responses as a function of sphere distance. Also comparable was the mechanical coupling between neighboring parts of the main canal. However, compared to the simple canal, the Xiphister-like canals showed a lower spatial resolution. Equipping artificial lateral line canals with artificial neuromasts revealed that Xiphister-like canals, i.e., lateral lines canals with tubuli that contained widely spaced pores, improve the signal-to-noise ratio in a highly turbulent environment. Even though a reduced spatial resolution is the price for this improvement, Xiphister may compensate for this compromise by having four instead of the usual single trunk lateral line canal. We suggest that lateral line canals with tubuli that contain widely spaced pores and multiple lateral line canals on each body side are an adaptation to a highly turbulent aquatic environment. 相似文献

The development of two of the cranial lateral line canals is described in the cichlid, Archocentrus nigrofasciatus. Four stages of canal morphogenesis are defined based on histological analysis of the supraorbital and mandibular canals. "Canal enclosure" and "canal ossification" are defined as two discrete stages in lateral line canal development, which differ in duration, an observation that has interesting implications for the ontogeny of lateral line function. Canal diameter in the vicinity of individual neuromasts begins to increase before ossification of the canal roof in each canal segment; this increase in canal diameter is accompanied by an increase in canal neuromast size. The mandibular canal generally develops later than the supraorbital canal in this species, but in both of these canals development of the different canal segments contained within a single dermal bone is asynchronous. These observations suggest that a dynamic process requiring integration and interaction among different tissues, in both space and time, underlies the development of the cranial lateral line canal system. The supraorbital and mandibular canals appear to demonstrate a "one-component" pattern of development in Archocentrus nigrofasciatus, where the walls of each canal segment grow up from the underlying dermal bone and then fuse to form the bony canal roof. This is contrary to numerous published reports that describe a "two-component" pattern of development in teleosts where the bony canal ossifies separately and then fuses with an underlying dermal bone. A survey of the literature in which lateral line canal development is described using histological analysis suggests that the occurrence of two different patterns of canal morphogenesis ("one-component" and "two-component") may be due to phylogenetic variation in the pattern of the development of the lateral line canals. 相似文献

We measured the activities of eight digestive enzymes in four species of herbivorous and carnivorous prickleback fishes and determined the effects of ontogeny, diet, and phylogeny on these enzyme activities. Of the four species, Cebidichthys violaceus and Xiphister mucosus shift to a more herbivorous diet as they grow (> or =45 mm SL [standard length]), whereas Xiphister atropurpureus and Anoplarchus purpurescens remain carnivores throughout life. Digestive enzyme activities of small (30-40 mm SL) carnivorous juveniles were compared with those of larger (60-75 mm SL) wild-caught juveniles that had consumed a natural diet and larger (60-75 mm SL) juveniles raised on a high-protein animal diet. Cebidichthys violaceus and both species of Xiphister showed ontogenetic changes in digestive enzyme activities, whereas A. purpurescens did not. Despite dietary differences between X. atropurpureus and X. mucosus, these sister taxa displayed the most similar digestive enzyme activities from ontogenetic and dietary perspectives (high alpha-amylase and lipase and low trypsin and aminopeptidase activities), and both were more similar to C. violaceus, a member of the same largely herbivorous clade, than either was to A. purpurescens, a member of an adjacent, carnivorous clade. The results support the hypothesis that phylogeny influences digestive enzyme activities in these fishes. Anoplarchus purpurescens, a carnivore with a diverse diet, showed great plasticity in enzyme activity, especially trypsin and aminopeptidase, which were elevated in this species to the highest level among the four species after consuming the high-protein diet. These results support the hypothesis that fishes with relatively broad diets can modulate digestive enzyme activities in response to changes in dietary composition. 相似文献

The biological function of anatomical specializations in the mechanosensory lateral line of elasmobranch fishes is essentially unknown. The gross and histological features of the lateral line in the Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina, were examined with special reference to its role in the localization and capture of natural invertebrate prey. Superficial neuromasts are arranged in bilateral rows near the dorsal midline from the spiracle to the posterior body disk and in a lateral position along the entire length of the tail. All dorsal lateral line canals are pored, contain sensory neuromasts, and have accessory lateral tubules that most likely function to increase their receptive field. The pored ventral canal system consists of the lateral hyomandibular canal along the disk margin and the short, separate mandibular canal on the lower jaw. The extensive nonpored and relatively compliant ventral infraorbital, supraorbital, and medial hyomandibular canals form a continuous complex on the snout, around the mouth, and along the abdomen. Vesicles of Savi are small mechanosensory subdermal pouches that occur in bilateral rows only along the ventral midline of the rostrum. Superficial neuromasts are best positioned to detect water movements along the transverse body axis such as those produced by tidal currents, conspecifics, or predators. The pored dorsal canal system is positioned to detect water movements created by conspecifics, predators, or possibly distortions in the flow field during swimming. Based upon the stingray lateral line morphology and feeding behavior, we propose the Mechanotactile Hypothesis, which states that the ventral nonpored canals and vesicles of Savi function as specialized tactile mechanoreceptors that facilitate the detection and capture of small benthic invertebrate prey. The morphology and development of the multiple lateral line canals (canals 1–5 in dorsal to ventral sequence) on the trunk of two representative hexagrammids, Hexagrammos decagrammus and H. stelleri, were studied using histological and cleared and stained material. The morphology of the lateral line scales of which the lateral line canals are composed and the distribution of canal neuromasts within them were described quantitatively. We hypothesized that 1) one neuromast is contained in each lateral line scale and all five canals contain neuromasts, 2) all five canals develop similarly, and 3) the multiple trunk canals are an adaptation for the alteration of lateral line function. Lateral line scale morphology was found to be similar among the five canals in Hexagrammos decagrammus and H. stelleri. However, canal 3 is significantly wider than the other four canals. It is the only one of the five canals connected to the canals on the head, and more significantly, it is the only one of the five canals that contains neuromasts. The lateral line scales that comprise all five lateral line canals show the same pattern of development whether or not they contain neuromasts. The five canals develop asynchronously, and each of the canals develops either rostro-caudally or caudo-rostrally. Canal 3 is the homologue of a single trunk canal in other teleosts; canals 1, 2, 4, and 5 are apomorphic features of the two species of Hexagrammos. Canals 1, 2, 4, and 5 cannot be functional components of the lateral line system because they do not contain neuromasts and thus cannot be adaptations for the alteration of lateral line function. The occurrence of lateral line canals lacking neuromasts demands a direct assessment of neuromast distributions in the lateral line canals among fishes. Finally, our data suggest that the putative role of neuromasts in the morphogenesis of lateral line canals and the nature of neuromast-bone relationships need to be critically reevaluated. J. The effects of ontogeny, diet, and phylogeny on glycogen storage levels and esterase and alkaline phosphatase activities in four related prickleback fishes were determined in situ using quantitative histochemistry. Of these species, Cebidichthys violaceus and Xiphister mucosus shift from carnivory to herbivory at approximately 45 mm standard length (SL), whereas Xiphister atropurpureus and Anoplarchus purpurescens remain carnivores. Comparisons between small (30-40 mm SL) and larger (60-75 mm SL) wild-caught juveniles showed that glycogen storage levels and alkaline phosphatase activity were unchanged with ontogeny. Comparisons between the larger wild-caught juveniles and juveniles of the same size that had been raised on a high-protein animal diet revealed that glycogen storage level and alkaline phosphatase activity increased in all species in response to this diet. Esterase activity also increased in response to the high-protein animal diet in all four species but increased with ontogeny only in C. violaceus, X. mucosus, and X. atropurpureus, in the xiphisterine clade, and not in A. purpurescens, in the adjacent alectriine clade. Xiphister mucosus and X. atropurpureus showed indistinguishable responses in esterase activity to ontogeny and diet despite their divergent natural diets. Overall, glycogen storage level and alkaline phosphatase activity responded primarily to diet, whereas esterase activity was also influenced by ontogeny and phylogeny and differed between intestinal regions among the species. 相似文献

Juveniles of Leptoclinus maculatus diaphanocarus were observed in great numbers in netting of bottom trawl in the period from April 28 to May 7 2007 in the Tatar Strait.
Metamorphosis of juveniles reached its end at the body length from 8.5 to 11.0 cm. It was accompanied by change of coloration.
After transition to the bottom mode of life, the frequency of occurrence of specimens of this species in catches drastically
decreased. Principal counts are estimated, with consideration of additional material from far eastern seas of Russia. Two
groups of specimens which would correspond to the Pacific and the Atlantic subspecies sensu Andriashev are not found. It is
suggested that, for determination of the actual taxonomic status of intraspecies groups of the species L. maculatus, additional comparative material on morphology and genetics is needed from different regions. 相似文献

An investigation of intraspecific habitat‐related patterns of variation in oculoscapular lateral‐line superficial neuromasts (SN) identified a decrease in the ratio of total SNs to pores, and a trend towards decreased asymmetry in SNs in the habitat‐generalist common bully Gobiomorphus cotidianus from fluvial habitats compared to lacustrine habitats, suggesting habitat‐related phenotypic variability. A greater ratio of pores to SNs, as well as less variation in the total number and asymmetry of SNs observed in the fluvial habitat‐specialist redfin bully Gobiomorphus huttoni may provide further evidence of variations in the oculoscapular lateral‐line morphology of fluvial habitat G. cotidianus individuals serving as adaptations to more turbulent environments. 相似文献

The morphology of the swim bladder and inner ear of the nurseryfish, Kurtus gulliveri, appear adapted for enhanced pressure wave reception. The saccule is enlarged and surrounded by very thin bone and two large fontanelles that would present reduced resistance to pressure waves. The swim bladder is elaborate, with six dorsolaterally projecting pairs of lobes that are tightly encased in ribs and an additional caudally projecting pair of lobes encased in the first hemal spine. The ribs and musculature surrounding the swim bladder laterally are very thin, so that four or five "rib windows" are readily apparent on back-lit specimens. This swim bladder-rib configuration would also present reduced resistance to pressure waves to enhance function as a peripheral auditory structure. However, high-resolution X-ray computed tomography and dissection reveal no anterior projections of the swim bladder that could serve as a mechanical coupling to the inner ear. The posterior lateral line nerve is well developed and lies directly over the tips of the ribs encasing the swim bladder lobes. This nerve is not, however, associated with a lateral line canal and a lateral line canal is absent on most of the body. We hypothesize that the posterior lateral line nerve transmits mechanosensory information from the swim bladder. 相似文献

The lateral line system and its innervation were examined in two species of the family Apogonidae (Cercamia eremia [Apogoninae] and Pseudamia gelatinosa [Pseudamiinae]). Both species were characterized by numerous superficial neuromasts (SNs; total 2,717 in C. eremia; 9,650 in P. gelatinosa), including rows on the dorsal and ventral halves of the trunk, associated with one (in C. eremia) and three (in P. gelatinosa) reduced trunk canals. The pattern of SN innervation clearly demonstrated that the overall pattern of SN distribution had evolved convergently in the two species. In C. eremia, SN rows over the entire trunk were innervated by elongated branches of the dorsal longitudinal collector nerve (DLCN) anteriorly and lateral ramus posteriorly. In P. gelatinosa, the innervation pattern of the DLCN was mirrored on the ventral half of the trunk (ventral longitudinal collector nerve: VLCN). Elongated branches of the DLCN and VLCN innervated SN rows on the dorsal and ventral halves of the trunk, respectively. The reduced trunk canal(s) apparently had no direct relationship with the increase of SNs, because these branches originated deep to the lateral line scales, none innervating canal neuromast (CN) homologues on the surface of the scales. In P. gelatinosa, a CN (or an SN row: CN homologue) occurred on every other one of their small lateral line scales, while congeners (P. hayashii and P. zonata) had an SN row (CN homologue) on every one of their large lateral line scales. 相似文献

Analysis of sequence variation in the mitochondrial and nuclear genes in Azygopterus corallinus showed that this species was genetically close to the group uniting the representatives of the families Zoarcidae, Neozoarcidae, and Anarhichadidae. The considerable genetic differences between A. corallinus and the members of the family Stichaedae, to which it was assigned earlier, are consistent with the divergence estimates between the other families of the suborder Zoarcoidei (Zaproridae, Ptilichthyidae, Pholidae, Cryptacanthodidae, Bathymasteridae). 相似文献
