It has been proposed that field-based tests (FT) used to estimate functional threshold power (FTP) result in power output (PO) equivalent to PO at lactate threshold (LT). However, anecdotal evidence from regional cycling teams tested for LT in our laboratory suggested that PO at LT underestimated FTP. It was hypothesized that estimated FTP is not equivalent to PO at LT. The LT and estimated FTP were measured in 7 trained male competitive cyclists (VO2max = 65.3 ± 1.6 ml O2·kg(-1)·min(-1)). The FTP was estimated from an 8-minute FT and compared with PO at LT using 2 methods; LT(Δ1), a 1 mmol·L(-1) or greater rise in blood lactate in response to an increase in workload and LT(4.0), blood lactate of 4.0 mmol·L(-1). The estimated FTP was equivalent to PO at LT(4.0) and greater than PO at LT(Δ1). VO2max explained 93% of the variance in individual PO during the 8-minute FT. When the 8-minute FT PO was expressed relative to maximal PO from the VO2max test (individual exercise performance), VO2max explained 64% of the variance in individual exercise performance. The PO at LT was not related to 8-minute FT PO. In conclusion, FTP estimated from an 8-minute FT is equivalent to PO at LT if LT(4.0) is used but is not equivalent for all methods of LT determination including LT(Δ1).  相似文献

Anaerobic threshold which describes the onset of systematic increase in blood lactate concentration is a widely used concept in clinical and sports medicine. A deflection point between heart rate-work rate has been introduced to determine the anaerobic threshold non-invasively. However, some researchers have consistently reported a heart rate deflection at higher work rates, while others have not. The present study was designed to investigate whether the heart rate deflection point accurately predicts the anaerobic threshold under the condition of acute hypoxia. Eight untrained males performed two incremental exercise tests using an electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer: one breathing room air and one breathing 12 % O2. The anaerobic threshold was estimated using the V-slope method and determined from the increase in blood lactate and the decrease in standard bicarbonate concentration. This threshold was also estimated by in the heart rate-work rate relationship. Not all subjects exhibited a heart rate deflection. Only two subjects in the control and four subjects in the hypoxia groups showed a heart rate deflection. Additionally, the heart rate deflection point overestimated the anaerobic threshold. In conclusion, the heart rate deflection point was not an accurate predictor of anaerobic threshold and acute hypoxia did not systematically affect the heart rate-work rate relationships.  相似文献

This paper examines the validity of the heart rate deflection point (HRDP) obtained with the "updated" Conconi test. Eleven male road cyclists performed 2 progressive incremental cycling tests and a 30-minute prolonged exercise test (PET). From the data obtained, comparisons were made and correlation coefficients were calculated between HRDP, the lactate threshold (LT), and the 3 mmol.L(-1) threshold (AT3). The PET at HRDP demonstrated whether or not a steady state in blood lactate concentration (BLaSS) could be maintained. Significantly lower values for power output (p < 0.01) and heart rate (HR) (p < 0.01) were found at LT compared with HRDP. No differences were found between HRDP and AT3. Only a moderate correlation for power output between HRDP and AT3 (rs = 0.69; p < 0.05) could be observed. During the PET, only 6 out of 11 cyclists reached the target time of 30 minutes, and only 4 cyclists maintained a BLaSS. We conclude that the updated Conconi test is not a valid method for assessing LT or AT3. Therefore, this method seems not suitable to evaluate endurance performance and prescribe exercise intensities in road cycling.  相似文献

The intensity of exercise above which oxygen uptake (Vo2) does not account for all of the required energy to perform work has been associated with lactate accumulation in the blood (lactate threshold, LT) and elevated carbon dioxide output (gas exchange threshold). An increase in hydrogen ion concentration ([H+]) is approximately concurrent with elevation of blood lactate and CO2 output during exercise. Near-infrared spectra (NIRS) and invasive interstitial fluid pH (pHm) were measured in the flexor digitorum profundus during handgrip exercise to produce a mathematical model relating the two measures with an estimated error of 0.035 pH units. This NIRS pHm model was subsequently applied to spectra collected from the vastus lateralis of 10 subjects performing an incremental-intensity cycle protocol. Muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) was also calculated from spectra. We hypothesized that a H+ threshold could be identified for these subjects and that it would be different from but correlated with the LT. Lactate, gas exchange, SmO2, and H+ thresholds were determined as a function of Vo2 using bilinear regression. LT was significantly different from both the gas exchange threshold (Delta = 0.27 +/- 0.29 l/min) and H+ threshold (Delta = 0.29 +/- 0.23 l/min), but the gas exchange threshold was not significantly different from the H+ threshold (Delta = 0.00 +/- 0.38 l/min). The H+ threshold was strongly correlated with LT (R2 = 0.95) and the gas exchange threshold (R2 = 0.85). This initial study demonstrates the feasibility of noninvasive pHm estimations, the determination of H+ threshold, and the relationship between H+ and classical metabolic thresholds during incremental exercise.  相似文献

During an incremental run test, some researchers consistently observe a heart rate (HR) deflection at higher speeds, but others do not. The present study was designed to investigate whether differences in test protocols could explain the discrepancy. Additionally, we sought to determine whether the HR deflection point accurately predicts lactate threshold (LT). Eight trained runners performed four tests each: 1) a treadmill test for maximal O(2) uptake, 2) a Conconi test on a 400-m track with speeds increasing approximately 0.5 km/h every 200 m, 3) a continuous treadmill run with speeds increasing 0.5 km/h every minute, and 4) a continuous LT treadmill test in which 3-min stages were used. All subjects demonstrated an HR deflection on the track, but only one-half of the subjects showed an HR deflection on the treadmill. On the track the shortening of stages with increasing speeds contributed to a loss of linearity in the speed-HR relationship. Additionally, the HR deflection point overestimated the LT when a continuous treadmill LT protocol was used. In conclusion, the HR deflection point was not an accurate predictor of LT in the present study.  相似文献

The time-course of heart rate, blood lactate, and ventilatory gas exchange was studied during an incremental exercise test on cycloergometer in order to ascertain whether heart rate deflection occurred at the same load as the second lactate S[La]2) and ventilatory (SV2) thresholds. Twelve moderately trained subjects, 22 to 30 years old, participated in the study. The initial power setting was 30 W for 3 min with successive increases of 30 W every min except at the end of the test where the increase was reduced to 20 and 10 W.min-1. Ventilatory flow (VE), oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2, ventilatory equivalents of O2 (EO2 = VE/VO2) and CO2 (ECO2 = VE/VCO2), and heart rate (HR) were determined during the last 20 s of every min. Venous blood samples were drawn at the end of each stage of effort and analyzed enzymatically for lactate concentration ([La]). The HR deflection, S[La]2, and SV2 were represented graphically by two investigators using a double blind procedure. Following the method proposed by Conconi et al. 1982, the deflection in HR was considered to begin at the point beyond which the increase in work intensity exceeded the increase in HR and the linearity of the work rate/HR relationship was lost. S[La]2 corresponded to the second breaking point of the lactate time-course curve (onset of blood lactate accumulation) and SV2 was identified at the second breaking point in the increase in VE and ventilatory equivalent for O2 uptake accompanied by a concomitant increase in ventilatory equivalent for CO2 output. We observed that the deflection point in HR was present only in 7 subjects. The work load, VO2, HR, and [La] levels at which heart rate departed from linearity did not differ significantly from those determined with S[La]2 ans SV2. The VO2 and HR values at HR deflection point were significantly correlated with those measured at S[La]2 and SV2. It is concluded that deflection in heart rate does not always occur, and when it does, it coincides with the second lactate and ventilatory gas exchange thresholds. It can thus be used for the determination of optimal intensity for individualized aerobic training.  相似文献

The effects of intensity of run training on the pulsatile release of growth hormone (GH) were investigated in 21 eumenorrheic untrained women. The O2 consumption (VO2) at the lactate threshold (LT); fixed blood lactate concentrations (FBLC) of 2.0, 2.5, and 4.0 mM; peak VO2; maximal VO2; body composition; and pulsatile release of GH were measured. Subjects in both the at-lactate threshold (/LT, n = 9) and above-lactate threshold (greater than LT, n = 7) training groups increased VO2 at LT and FBLC of 2.0, 2.5, and 4.0 mM and VO2max after 1 yr of run training. However, the increase observed in the greater than LT group was greater than that in the /LT group (P less than 0.05). No change was observed for the control group (n = 5). No among- or within-group differences were observed for body weight, although trends for reductions in percent body fat (P less than 0.06) and fat weight (P less than 0.15) were observed in the greater than LT group, and both training groups significantly increased fat-free weight (P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The deflection point (DP) of the heart rate in relation to the work rate (WR) of 8 male endurance-trained paraplegics and 11 male physically active sports students was investigated during nonsteady-state incremental arm cranking ergometry (IT) and compared to the 4 mmol · l−1 blood lactate concentration threshold and to blood lactate concentration in steady-state exercise (SST). Heart rate, and lactate concentration from capillary blood, were determined at rest, during IT and SST. The DP was calculated by linear regression analysis of the heart rate during IT. The SST consisted of three consecutive exercise intensities over a period of 8 min at exercise intensities of 10 W below, and at 10 W above the work rate at deflection point (WRDP). No difference was found between the paraplegics and non-handicapped subjects regarding heart rate and blood lactate concentration at rest and during exercise. A DP was established in all the paraplegics and in 72.7% of the non-handicapped subjects, but lactate accumulation was observed in 75% of the paraplegics and in 62.5% of the non-handicapped subjects at the lowest intensity of SST. In summary, endurance-trained paraplegics with an injury level below T5 showed heart rate and blood lactate concentration values comparable to non-handicapped subjects during IT. A linear increase at moderate exercise intensities and a levelling-off at higher to maximal intensities could be identified in all the paraplegics and in 72.7% of non-handicapped subjects. The determination of the anaerobic threshold by DP should be applied with caution, since no causal relationship of DP and the anaerobic threshold was found and the WRDP tended to overestimate threshold values. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between threshold points for heart rate (Thfc) and blood lactate (Thla) as determined by two objective mathematical models. The models used were the mono-segmental exponential (EXP) model of Hughson et al. and the log-log (LOG) model of Beaver et al. Inter-correlations of these threshold points and correlations with performance were also studied. Seventeen elite runners (mean, SD = 27.5, 6.5 years; 1.73, 0.05 m; 63.8, 7.3 kg; and maximum oxygen consumption of 67.8, 3.7 ml.kg-1.min-1) performed two maximal multistage running field tests on a 183.9-m indoor track with inclined turns. The initial speed of 9 km.h-1 (2.5 m.s-1) was increased by 0.5 km.h-1 (0.14 m.s-1) every lap for the fc test and by 1 km.h-1 (0.28 m.s-1) every 4 min for the la test. After fitting the la or the fc data to the two mathematical models, the threshold speed was assessed in the LOG model from the intersection of the two linear segments (LOG-la; LOG-fc) and in the EXP model from a tangent point (TI-la; TI-fc). Thla and Thfc speeds computed with the two models were significantly different (P less than 0.001) and poorly correlated (LOG-la vs LOG-fc: r = 0.36, TI-la vs TI-fc: r = 0.13). In general, Thfc were less well correlated with performance than Thla. With two different objective mathematical models, this study has shown significant differences and poor correlations between Thla and Thfc.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In 9 trained athletes and 4 sedentary subjects the anaerobic threshold was assessed on a cycle ergometer, using the deflection point of heart rate in a protocol in which the workload increased by 10 W every 45 s. The workload at which plasma lactate concentration equalled 4 mmol.l-1 was assessed under steady state conditions on separate occasions. In addition, in 3 subjects the non-invasive anaerobic threshold and the 4 mmol.l-1 lactate level under steady state conditions were assessed on a treadmill. On the cycle ergometer 6 subjects demonstrated a deflection point in the heart rate record, whereas the others failed to do so. The workload at which heart rate departed from linearity in the progressive protocol did not coincide with the steady state 4 mmol.l-1 workload but occurred at a higher workload. On the treadmill no deflection in heart rate was observed. It is concluded that in cyclists a deflection in heart rate does not always occur, and when it does, it does not coincide with the anaerobic threshold determined under steady state conditions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine whether gender differences exist for ventilatory threshold (VT), lactate threshold (LT), and Vo2max during on-ice skating in college hockey players. Ten male and 10 female Division III college hockey players performed a graded exercise skating protocol until reaching volitional fatigue. The graded exercise test employed stages that were 80 seconds in duration, with 40 seconds of rest between each stage to obtain blood lactate samples. Ventilatory threshold occurred at a higher percentage of maximal heart rate (HRmax) in women than in men. The women's VT occurred at 77.3% +/- 1.6% HRmax, while the men's VT occurred at 72.6% +/- 2.0% HRmax (p < 0.02). Men and women had similar HRmax values: 191.3 +/- 2.5 b.min and 185.8 +/- 2.5 b.min, respectively. Vo2max was different between genders, with men at 52.7 +/- 1.3 mL.kg.min and women at 40.1 +/- 1.0 mL.kg.min (p < 0.01). In addition, VT was different between genders when measured as a percentage of Vo2max, with men at 52.7% +/- 3.2% and women at 67.3% +/- 4.0% (p < 0.02). In contrast, LT was similar between genders when expressed as a percentage of HRmax or Vo2max. For each gender, LT occurred at a significantly higher percentage of HRmax or Vo2max than VT did. It can be concluded that VT does not accurately predict LT in male or female hockey players. Additionally, competitive female hockey players have a lower Vo2max but a higher VT than their male counterparts. An increased VT may be a compensatory mechanism to offset the smaller Vo2max values measured in female hockey players. On-ice testing is a practical way to address specific aerobic training needs of hockey players.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the accuracy of tests that may be used by distance runners to estimate the lactate threshold. Competitive distance runners/triathletes (N = 27) performed a criterion test that directly measured (blood lactate of 4.0 mmol.L(-1)) the lactate threshold. Subjects then performed 4 tests (VDOT, 3,200-m time trial, 30-minute time trial, Conconi) that estimate the threshold. Mean estimations of the running velocity at the lactate threshold from the 30-minute time trial (standard error of the estimate, SEE, 0.21 m.s(-1)) and VDOT (SEE 0.41 m.s(-1)) methods did not differ (P>0.05) from the criterion. In terms of heart rate, the 30-minute time trial estimation did not significantly differ (SEE 8.0 b.min(-1)) from criterion. These findings suggest that the 30-minute time-trial method should be considered by coaches and distance runners/triathletes as a method for estimating both the running velocity and heart rate at the lactate threshold.  相似文献

Maximal blood lactate steady state concentration (MLSS) and anaerobic threshold (AT) have been shown to accurately predict long distance events performance and training loads, as well, in human athletes. Horse endurance races can take up to 160 km and, in practice, coaches use the 4 mM blood lactate concentration, a human based fixed concentration to establish AT, to predict training loads to horse athletes, what can lead to misleading training loads. The lactate minimum speed (LMS) protocol that consists in an initial elevation in blood lactate level by a high intensity bout of exercise and then establishes an individual equilibrium between lactate production and catabolism during progressive submaximal efforts, has been proposed as a nonfixed lactate concentration, to measure individual AT and at the same time predicts MLSS for human long distance runners and basketball players as well. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of the LMS protocol in endurance horse athletes. Five male horses that were engaged on endurance training, for at least 1 year of regular training and competition, were used in this study. Animals were submitted to a 500 m full gallop to determine each blood lactate time to peak (LP) after these determinations, animals were submitted to a progressive 1000 m exercise, starting at 15 km h(-1) to determine LMS, and after LMS determination animals were also submitted to two 10,000 m running, first at LMS and then 10% above LMS to test MLSS accuracy. Mean LP was 8.2+/-0.7 mM at approximately 5.8+/-6.09 min, mean LMS was 20.75+/-2.06 km h(-1) and mean heart rate at LMS was 124.8+/-4.7 BPM. Blood lactate remained at rest baseline levels during 10,000 m trial at LMS, but reached a six fold significantly raise during 10% above LMS trial after 4000 and 6000 m (p<0.05) and (p<0.01) after 8000 and 10,000 m. In conclusion, our adapted LMS protocol for horse athletes proposed here seems to be a reliable method to state endurance horse athletes LT and MLSS.  相似文献

Many studies have used the heart rate deflection points (HRDPs) during incremental exercise tests, because of their strong correlation with the anaerobic threshold. The aim of this study was to evaluate the profile of the HRDPs identified by a computerized method and compare them with ventilatory and lactate thresholds. Twenty-four professional soccer players (age, 22 ± 5 years; body mass, 74 ± 7 kg; height 177 ± 7 cm) volunteered for the study. The subjects completed a Bruce-protocol incremental treadmill exercise test to volitional fatigue. Heart rate (HR) and alveolar gas exchange were recorded continuously at ≥1 Hz during exercise testing. Subsequently, the time course of the HR was fit by a computer algorithm, and a set of lines yielding the lowest pooled residual sum of squares was chosen as the best fit. This procedure defined 2 HRDPs (HRDP1 and HRDP2). The HR break points averaged 43.9 ± 5.9 and 89.7 ± 7.5% of the VO2peak. The HRDP1 showed a poor correlation with ventilatory threshold (VT; r = 0.50), but HRDP2 was highly correlated to the respiratory compensation (RC) point (r = 0.98). Neither HRDP1 nor HRDP2 was correlated with LT1 (at VO2 = 2.26 ± 0.72 L·min(-1); r = 0.26) or LT2 (2.79 ± 0.59 L·min(-1); r = 0.49), respectively. LT1 and LT2 also were not well correlated with VT (2.93 ± 0.68 L·min(-1); r = 0.20) or RC (3.82 ± 0.60 L·min(-1); r = 0.58), respectively. Although the HR deflection points were not correlated to LT, HRDP2 could be identified in all the subjects and was strongly correlated with RC, consistent with a relationship to cardiorespiratory fatigue and endurance performance.  相似文献

This study was carried out to compare blood lactate changes in isocapnic buffering phase in an incremental exercise test between sprinters and long distance runners, and to seek the possibility for predicting aerobic or anaerobic potential from blood lactate changes in isocapnic buffering phase. Gas exchange variables and blood lactate concentration ([lactate]) in six sprinters (SPR) and nine long distance runners (LDR) were measured during an incremental exercise test (30 W.min-1) up to subject's voluntary exhaustion on a cycle ergometer. Using a difference between [lactate] at lactate threshold (LT) and [lactate] at the onset of respiratory compensation phase (RCP) and the peak value of [lactate] obtained during a recovery period from the end of the exercise test, the relative increase in [lactate] during the isocapnic buffering phase ([lactate]ICBP) was assessed. The [lactate] at LT (mean +/- SD) was similar in both groups (1.36 +/- 0.27 for SPR vs. 1.24 +/- 0.24 mmol.l-1 for LDR), while the [lactate] at RCP and the peak value of [lactate] were found to be significantly higher in SPR than in LDR (3.61 +/- 0.33 vs. 2.36 +/- 0.45 mmol.l-1 for RCP, P < 0.001, 10.18 +/- 1.53 vs. 8.10 +/- 1.61 mmol.l-1 for peak, P < 0.05). The [lactate]ICBP showed a significantly higher value in SPR (22.5 +/- 5.9%, P < 0.05) compared to that in LDR (14.2 +/- 5.0%) as a result of a twofold greater increase of [lactate] from LT to RCP (2.25 +/- 0.49 for SPR vs. 1.12 +/- 0.39 mmol.l-1 for LDR). In addition, the [lactate]ICBP inversely correlated with oxygen uptake at LT (VO2LT, r = -0.582, P < 0.05) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max, r = -0.644, P < 0.01). The results indicate that the [lactate]ICBP is likely to give an index for the integrated metabolic, respiratory and buffering responses at the initial stage of metabolic acidosis derived from lactate accumulation.  相似文献

The reliability of the lactate threshold (LT) determined in aged rats and its validity to identify an exercise intensity corresponding to the maximal blood lactate steady state (MLSS) were analyzed. Eighteen male aged Wistar rats (~365 days) were submitted to two incremental swimming tests until exhaustion, consisting of an initial load corresponding to 1% of body mass (BM) and increments of 1% BM at each 3‐min with blood lactate ([lac]) measurements. The LT was determined by visual inspection (LTV) as well by applying a polynomial function on the [lac]/workload ratio (LTP) by considering the vertices of the curve. For the MLSS, twelve animals were submitted, on different days, to 3–4 exercise sessions of 30‐min with workload corresponding to 4, 5 or 6% BM. The MLSS was considered the highest exercise intensity at which the [lac] variation was not higher than 0.07 mM.min?1 during the last 20‐min. No differences were observed for the test‐retest results (4.9 ± 0.7 and 5.0 ± 0.8 %BM for LTv; and 6.0 ± 0.6 and 5.8 ± 0.6 %BM for LTp) that did not differ from the MLSS (5.4 ± 0.5 %BM). The LT identified for aged rats in swimming, both by visual inspection and polynomial function, was reliable and did not differ from the MLSS. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Cardiorespiratory and blood lactate (La) responses to prolonged submaximal running at an intensity relative to lactate threshold (LT) were examined in 15 recreational runners, aged 19 to 32. In test 1 where treadmill speed was progressively incremented by 10-20m/min until exhaustion, oxygen uptake at the LT (VO2 @ LT: 2.34 +/- 0.331/min or 41.6 +/- 5.7 ml/kg/min) and VO2max (3.58 +/- 0.341/min or 63.6 +/- 5.5 ml/kg/min) were measured. In test 2, the subject was required to run on the treadmill for 1 hour at a fixed velocity (Vt) which corresponded to his Vt @ LT. As expected, mean VO2 ranged during the 1-h submaximal running from 2.31 +/- 0.411/min or 63.0 +/- 7.8% VO2max at min 10-20 to 2.52 +/- 0.351/min or 69.2 +/- 6.2% VO2max at min 50-60, both of which were close to VO2 @ LT (65.2 +/- 4.4% VO2max). The slight decrease in blood La was found from min 20 to min 60, and this was accompanied by a parallel decline in respiratory exchange ratio. Shifts in the energy substrate toward a reliance on fat oxidation may occur during the course of 1-h running at Vt @t LT. The small oxygen debt observed after the 1-h running may confirm the assumption that prolonged running at Vt at LT would be performed in an almost fully aerobic steady state. We conclude that prolonged running at Vt @ LT may possibly maximize health-related benefits in the healthy adult.  相似文献
